Orienteers enjoy Molong Challenge

Over 800 orienteers travelled to the Molong/Gumble/Manildra district from all parts of Australia to complete the challenges of the local Gumble Pinnacle, Noah's Ark orienteering map.

With various categories for the elite orienteer to the less challenging tracks for children and families to participate in - the local map was described as "difficult, enjoyable, rocky, easy going and fun" - and the weather during the day as "hot" and for some campers - the nights as cool to cold.

This delightful family from Darwin (l to r) Eleanor Hallett (6 years old), Heidi Hallett (3 years old) travelled thousands of kms with with their parents, Lachlan Hallett and Susanne Casanova to compete in the local challenge.

End Orienteering Club - the family of four travelled in their camper van thousands of kms to participate in the local challenge.

Eleanor was thrilled with her own winning run to complete the girls/boys 10 year old and under run. Whilst Heidi took part in the special event for 3 year olds (accompanied by her parents).

Lachlan had a successful win in the Mens Open category (21+ age group).

Keen orienteers in the Top End, this lovely family enjoyed coming to Molong and camping in the local caravan park. Both Susanne and Lachlan have competed, successfully, in overseas events as members of Australian teams. Susanne winning major orienteering events including World Junior Champion and Seniors championships. "Orienteering is fun for the whole family" said Eleanor.

‘New’ news from the Express

Readers will have noticed a few changes to the Molong Express including from those those who find and write the news.

After a recent foot injury and surgery - Rozzi has slowed down from her former role at the Express. “As in any career, organisation or business - knowing when to step-back and hand over a role to new blood is really important” said Rozzi who has worked alongside Express owner, Paul Mullins, for some 15 years.

“Succession planning is critical in the media sector - new writers, new journalists, new photography - new stories -new approaches are all critical components to ensure long-term success of readership, growth and in keeping important independently owned newspapers, like the Molong Express, alive and well.”

“I’ll be working more ‘on’ the business of the Molong Express - rather than ‘in’ the business” said Rozzi. “Which means increasing advertising opportunities, sponsorship, increasing circulation,and further developing what have been new readership growth areas for the Express in recent times.”

The Express has been very fortunate to gain the fantastic Emily Gobourg as part of the team.

A local woman - Emily has hit the ground

running and loves working in the Express and contributing interviews, photos and stories of people and places in the readership area.

“Emily is a gem” said Rozzi. “She is enthusiastic, loves living in this area, loves the people and the communities ... and is an extremely good journalist.”

“Paul (Mullins) continues in his role and together with Emily and fantastic contributing writers - they make a very strong team” said Rozzi.

Easter bunnies visit Molong

Scarlett Johnston of the Central Coast and Jocelyn Bennett of Orange visited Molong with their families on Easter Saturday - with both wearing their special bunny ears for fun.

The Express welcomed these young passers-by with a delicious gift for bringing Easter Bunny fun to town.

“We gave Scarlett and Jocelyn the largest chocolate egg from our Easter bowl” said Rozzi.

We hope these two gorgeous young ladies and their families return to Molong again soon with their happy smiling faces.

Orange FOOD Week - 9th to 18th April With the annual Orange FOOD Week commencing this week - visitors, tourists will join local communities to discover the food and wine this region (including Molong/Cabonne Country) is famous for.

The Express will be featuring a number of food growing families from this area to add to the Orange FOOD Week stories.

Molong Markets attract thousands $3,700 raised for Molong Hospital Sensory Garden

One of the largest crowds ever to attend the holiday Monday Molong Village Markets saw nearly 5,000 visitors to the Molong Rec. Ground to survey the wares of some 130 vendors or all descriptions.

They also did some eating. Aside from savouring from the variety of food stalls dotted around the grounds the Molong Advancement Group’s own BBQ outlet unloaded 15kg of bacon, 20 dozen eggs, 300 sausages and 250 steaks onto their famous rolls.

This year MAG is supporting the Molong Hospital’s Sensory Garden project and entry buckets at the Market attracted a healthy $3,700 in visitor donations.

Anzac Day 2021 update Molong RSL Sub Branch President, David Bloomfield, has advised that while the RSLNSW and State Government have eased the COVID regulations throughout NSW to allow Anzac Day Commemorations to take place, the Sub Branch is staying with their original plan to hold a main service only this year, with no Dawn Service and no march.

The main service will be held at the Cenotaph on the Village Green in Molong at 11.00am. on 25 April.

As Dawn Services throughout the state are limited to ticketed events the Sub Branch is suggesting to the community that they may like to conduct their own service at their front gate , as was done in 2020.

“After your own Dawn Service, you are welcome to come to the RSL Club in Riddell St. for a Bacon and Egg Roll breakfast from 6.15am”

Dubbo Mayor Ben Shields off lifesupport but still in serious condition

The region’s Deputy Mayor, Councillor Stephen Lawrence, has assumed the role of acting mayor while Cr Shields remains on medical leave.

On Monday, March 29, two councillors called for Cr Shields to step down over his handling of a proposed Bunnings development at the city’s former RAAF base.

Australian Rotary’s 100 Years Australia Post has issued a stamp commemorating the centenary of Rotary in Australia.

Rotary is a worldwide servicebased organisation, devoted to community and humanitarian service.

This stamp issue commemorates the centenary of Rotary in Australia. There are currently more than 26,000 active members in more than 1,000 Rotary Clubs across the country.

The Rotary Club of Molong is 52 years old this year.

A spokesman for the family of the Mayor of the Dubbo Region, Ben Shields, has released a statement saying Councillor Shields has been taken off life-support but remains in intensive care at Dubbo Hospital.

Greg Mohr said Cr Shields remained in a serious condition after a medical incident last week.

“Ben continues to be cared for by the wonderful staff here at Dubbo Hospital … the family cannot thank these medical professionals enough for their care and compassion,” Mr

St Joseph’s Primary School, Molong: End of first term for students, and best farewell wishes to two very special people

By Emily Gobourg Last Thursday marked the end of term one for students at St Joseph’s Primary School in Molong, as they held their outdoor end of year assembly and presentation for parents, family, and friends.

This special day was a first (of many more to come) for the new Joey’s Kinders, where all of the children displayed their artworks throughout the year thus far, sang and danced in performances, and joined in to farewell two very loved members of the school – teachers Mrs Melissa Townsend, and Miss Taylah Woodhouse.

St Joseph’s in Manildra will welcome Mrs Melissa Townsend next term, as she begins her new role in secretary for the school. Mr Matthew French, Principal of St Joseph’s in Molong, described how Melissa had been a huge part of the school community for the past five years.

Molong has hockey, rugby league, rugby union, soccer, tennis, cricket competitions with a lot both senior and junior participation.

We have two fishing clubs.

We have the State sheepdog trials.

We are pretty bloody good supporting each other and most of all supporting our town.

Are we going to let some half baked character from the east of the mountains ruin our town with the stroke of a pen or a tap on a delete button?

No bloody way!

Come on Mayor Kev, get them (Cwealth Bank) out here to meet real people, people who care, people that held a town together because we're too stubborn to give in.

As an add-on, one should not forget one of Molong's finest in Dianne Gorringe.

Vaccine rollout has enough problems without ministers politicking COVID-19 has an evil sense of humour.

Despite Australia being mostly free of community transmission, it managed to spoil Christmas for quite a few Sydneysiders and their families and now it’s struck just before the Easter holidays.

The Brisbane lockdown was lifted but many people cancelled plans, and the Byron Bay Bluesfest was called off.

The latest disruption, though limited, reinforced the importance of rolling out the vaccine as fast as possible.

If you believe Health Minister Greg Hunt, that’s going fabulously – even though we’re way behind the original targets. If you believe the NSW and Queensland governments, and many people’s lived experience, it’s another story.

Get news that’s free, independent and based on evidence.

NSW reacted furiously to Wednesday’s News Corps tabloid report, sheeted home to Hunt, that focused on states failing to get enough shots into arms.

Queensland was riled when senior Nationals minister David Littleproud condemned the states for doing “threefifths of bugger all”.

Federal “spin” and blame shifting were red rags to the two states; NSW health minister Brad Hazzard declared “I’m as angry as I have ever been in this 15 months of war against this virus”.

The federal government was criticised for the lumpy and unpredictable

distribution of vaccine supplies.

Hunt and Scott Morrison sought to soothe; things calmed somewhat.

Morrison didn’t hide his anger at Hunt and Littleproud for their provocation.

The feds like to say the rollout is “not a race,” because we don’t have a “burning platform” like many countries.

But – apart from the risk of bigger breakouts – the slower the rollout, the longer we endure spot lockdowns, a closed international border, and a brake on the economy.

In the coming weeks and months, Morrison will be grappling with two very tangible issues and another which is much more elusive and for him, especially difficult. They are the rollout, ensuring the economic settings are optimal, and the “women problem”.

The rollout is basically about administration. It should get better.

The vaccine shortages will ease with the ramp up of local production. The efficiency on the ground will presumably improve but how fast and to what extent remain open questions. The job will get done, but the October deadline for jabs all round looks beyond reach.

Behind the scenes, another job is in full swing – work on next month’s budget; like the rollout it is complex, albeit in a completely different and much more familiar way.

This budget, like its October predecessor, is being crafted against a backdrop of high uncertainty.

The Australian economy is recovering remarkably well from the COVID recession, climbing back up that V shape.

But with JobKeeper ended, and people on JobSeeker receiving less money than before, there are big unknowns. How many businesses will close? How many workers will lose jobs? What will be the economy-wide effect on spending?

The government gets “real time” information; even so, it is framing the budget in rapidly changing conditions.

On the positive side, the latest numbers indicate a better fiscal position than at the December update, which had a deficit forecast of just under $200 billion for this financial year.

Economist Chris Richardson, from Deloitte Access Economics, says in preparing the budget the government will need to consider where more “sticky tape” is required (like that already applied to the aviation and tourism industries), and what should be done about the failed JobMaker scheme (which was designed to encourage the employment of younger people).

Back then, the Molong Apex Club was a progressive club of many members. All who appeared to participate in planning, building, organising events ... and contributing to the greater good of Molong. Take a look at the plaques on various community buildings around town, toilets, shelters ... name a cause - a fundraiser - a project ... and Apex in Molong was there - with bells on. Here is one example of their good work and in bringing entertainment to town for community gathering/building. Well done Molong Apex.

Blackman’s Swamp & Orange floods

Following our report in the 25 March edition regarding the visit of the Minister for Regional Transport and Roads, the Hon. Paul Toole MP to discuss flood mitigation in Molong, we dug up a bit of history of main street flooding in Orange early last century.

Here is an extract from Orange 1860-1960, a volume celebrating 100 years of local government.

With COVID restrictions eased - Easter services returned this year to local churches and gatherings to remember the story of Jesus Christ, his pain and suffering, humiliation at the hands of those threatened by him and his followers - his gift of life and love, his resurrection and to pray for his return. Singing was once again allowed last weekend to the delight of Christians.

This year, the Express was able to attend two of the Easter services held in Molong. One on Maundy Thursday at St. John’s Anglican Church (Bank Street) and Easter Sunday at the Molong Community Church (opposite the Rec. grounds).

Both were a positive reminder of the Easter story and the reason for family gatherings, being together at Easter, and celebrating this historical christian event which helped to form our lives today.

But do we give enough of our time to remember this important Christian story? Or have we moved from Christianity to doubting, criticising, not believing, referring to the ‘accuracy’ of the Bible?

The churches have the answers to those who live in doubt, those who criticise, those who humiliate, those who condemn. Those who live in doubt from their own christian experiences at school, church, or other such times of disbelief formed from experiences throughout their own lives, those told by the media, those who create fear in others, those who used unchristian discipline to create that fear or abuse. Take another look? The Bible and the various versions and writings contain words and thoughts, prayers of belief. Could it be that today - moreso than anyother day or time is one where we could learn more about ourselves, and life to help us through doubt, fear ... and to unbalance the unknown of the world today and what it is capable of - to those words written in a past time where Jesus, as an activist, was brave to stand for a belief - for a purpose - for a story - that may be linked with the reason for activism today?

Churches of today are hearing the words of the people of today who are attempting to live in a changing and often fearful world. Churches and the various religions are changing many are ready to change in order to provide the spiritual needs of communities today.

The Molong Community Church experience on Easter Sunday was representative of the change occurring in some churches in

bringing the history, the words of the Bible - the traditions of the Christian story to their followers and visitors.

A most unique service was held at the Molong Community Church on Easter Sunday to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

“We decided to offer a different perspective to the Easter story by looking at how the Hebrew people celebrated the Passover meal” said Deon Stapelberg (Pastor).

“We sat together in joyful prayer and song, and shared the traditional Passover meal designed as close as possible to the foods served by Jesus and his followers” said Eliza Stapelberg.

“We made and served foods reflecting the symbols of the food, prayer and spiritual significance of the celebration”.

“This was a meaningful service where we all sat together and ate our meal together” said Deon “and a return to history and acknowledgment of the Hebrew faith. “And, how the Passover meal points us to Jesus and his story.”

“The members of the church came together to prepare and serve the Passover meal - as close as possible to that served by Jesus and his followers in that time as the last meal he had with his disciples.”

Services at the Molong Community Church are held on Sundays at 10 am. followed by morning tea. All welcome.

A Mother’s Day event is currently being designed as another unique celebration of this important day at the Church.

Featuring the words of the Bible and Jesus Christ in showing respect to the lives of women.

“Blackman's Swamp Creek, which runs diagonally through the city from south- east to north-east. was a major problem for the Council.

The stream had overflowed periodically.doing much damage to buildings and other property, until a concrete channel sulficiently wide and deep to carry even an outsize flood, was constructed.

Work on the coristruction of the channel to convey stormwater through Orange began in 1887 and was continued at intervals for another 50 years. Tenders for the extension of the drain were called early in 1890 and by January, 1891, it had been completed as far as the bridge in Lord’s Place. Two years later it was decided to construct the channel through Robertson Park.

In 1896 an amount of 1500 pounds was voted for the work. In another three years the channel was lengthened from Kite Street to Moulder Street, and in 1900 an extension northward was completed.

They once paddled in the main street. This photo, taken at the corner of Summer Street and Lord's Place in 1916 , shows the flood waters from Blackman's Swamp Creek. The Hotel Canobolas now stands on the left-hand corner and Commonwealth Bank on the right.

During a flood period in August, 1916, the channel overflowed and did much damage. In February 1928 Lord’s Place became submerged to a depth, in the case of one building, of six feet.

In June, 1935, the Government granted 25,000 pounds for the reconstruction of the channel and the Council undertook to add a further 25,000 pounds.

The building of the new channel began early in 1936 and it was designed to discharge three times the volume carried by the old one. It was reported in January 1937, that the making of the stormwater channels would eliminate the ugly and clumsy roadways that had been associated with the old drain and would transform what had been an unpleasant swamp into a beautiful park. The channel through Robertson Park was roofed in and the old bridge across it in Byng Street was removed. The work continued until 1939, and the channel is now able to cope with the heaviest of storms.”

“They were really mindful of not wanting to walk through the corridors where the administration staff were, where the deputy principle was (and so on), and so, very mindful of wanting to be private about their mental health issues. They were opened-minded to seeking support – but the actual place of seeking support didn’t seem to be very comfortable for them.”

After discussions were held with the students, a lightbulb moment essentially struck the team. What if they moved that support to somewhere else in the school? Where could they go to safeguard this vital sense of comfort and emotional safety?

With the old house not being actively used, it was decided that the location would be the new heart within the school to allow students’ holistic access to critical services – to encompass their sense of emotional safety, and to support their overall wellbeing.

“That’s what we want to do for our young people,” Michelle stated. “We want them to feel that it’s okay to seek support when you need support in any of those areas.”

Described as “unique people” within her staff, Michelle added how the different roles within the MCS support team had provided great skills in supporting

Boosting your ‘gut health’ sounds great. But this wellness trend is vague and often misunderstood

If you walk down the supermarket aisle, you may be tempted with foods marketed as being good for your gut. Then there are the multiple health blogs about improving, supporting or maintaining your “gut health”.

But what does “gut health” mean? Is it the absence of disease? Is it no bloating? Or is it something else entirely? And how strong is the evidence “gut health” products actually make a difference?

As we explain in our article just published in the journal Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology, even researchers have not quite nailed a definition. Here’s what we know so far.

What does the science say?

We know the gut is important for our overall health and well-being. And when we say “gut”, we usually mean the large intestine, the region of the gastrointestinal tract where most of our gut microbiome lives.

Our gut microbiome is our gut’s resident microbes. And evidence is emerging this affects everything from how our body processes sugar in our diet, to our risk of cancer, depression and dementia.

But there’s no clear agreement on what “gut health” actually means. Researchers don’t use the term in the medical literature very much.

When they do, they seem to refer to no: unwanted gastrointestinal symptoms (such as pain or diarrhoea) disease (such as Crohn’s disease or colon cancer), or negative gut features (such as inflammation, a deficiency of certain molecules or an imbalance in the microbiome), which are almost impossible to precisely diagnose.

Nowhere do researchers or gastroenterologists (doctors who specialise in the gut) mention any

aesthetic perks, such as a smooth, flat belly or glowing skin, despite what magazine articles might suggest.

So, what’s the problem?

There are two main problems with products or lists of foods that claim to be good for “gut health”.

First, such claims are not backed by strong scientific evidence. Second, these claims are simplistic.

While a healthy diet is undoubtedly an essential contributor to good health, including of the gastrointestinal system, it’s dietary patterns and overall habits, not individual foods, that shift the dial.

Let’s take fibre as an example Fibre is one dietary component heralded as a gut health hero. Indeed, there is compelling evidence showing health benefits of a high-fibre diet, for the gastrointestinal tract, and also more broadly (for instance, a reduced risk of heart disease and diabetes).

Yet most people in Western countries do not eat enough dietary fibre.

However, the little-told story is foods contain multiple types of dietary fibre, each with different effects on gut function (and its microbiome).

We don’t know if all types of fibre are essential or beneficial. At least in animals, too much of certain fibres might affect the large intestine, causing inflammatory disease.

So yes, eat high-fibre foods (including wholegrain cereals, fruit, vegetables, legumes and nuts). But do so as part of a varied diet, not by overloading on just one or two foods or commercial products claiming to improve your “gut health”.

It has said it won’t make budget repair a priority until unemployment, presently 5.8%, is “comfortably” under 6%. But the bank wants to see unemployment down to 4.5%, which Richardson maintains is the rate the government should be embracing.

The big new spending will be on aged care, with its huge challenges. Hunt took on major responsibility for this in the December reshuffle – the rollout problem must be eating into the attention he can devote to the policy drafting.

The October budget was criticised for not containing enough for women; now Morrison has his new “lens” on them. That comes with the danger of disappointing expectations.

women’s issue is that it extends beyond policy although good policies, such as initiatives addressing workplace sexual harassment, are vital.

Since Brittany Higgins’ allegation she was raped by a colleague in a minister’s office, the country has seen the eruption of a social movement that is about feelings, perceptions and attitudes as much as about specific policies.

It is about the behaviour of men – in parliament house, and everywhere else.

While bad behaviour exists on all sides of politics, the recent revelations have mainly been about the Coalition.

Last week saw the spotlight turned on Liberal MP Andrew Laming, accused of trolling constituents and taking an inappropriate photo of a woman. Laming says he won’t seek another term, but Morrison isn’t wanting to banish him to the crossbench, which would wipe out the government’s majority.

Although the allegations against him are far less

serious, trenchant critics would say he should follow the example of NSW Nationals MP Michael Johnsen, who has resigned from state parliament after an accusation (which he vehemently denies) that he raped a sex worker.

Another bad week for Morrison could have been worse if parliament had been sitting, when Laming would have been front and centre. But this is only a temporary reprieve: if Laming is still on the government benches come budget week, he’ll be a distraction.

The national debate sparked by Higgins and escalated by the historical rape allegation against Christian Porter – strenuously denied by him – is seeing tough conversations in many Australian households.

It would be fascinating to know what impact it is having on Morrison’s own close-knit family, which is mostly female, including his wife, two young daughters and his mother. We heard early on about Jenny’s advice, but how’s the kitchen table discussion going?

Molong Golf Ladies There wasn’t any golf last Wednesday, but on the 14th it will be an 18 hole stableford 8.30 for 9.00am tee off, new golfers are always welcome.

Sunday Mixed Another beautiful autumn day for golf on Sunday with twelve players participating. Paul Glynn was this week’s winner with Bell coming in second. Balley couldn’t maintain his good form with a bad start and it didn’t improve much although he somehow managed to par a couple of holes.

The ghost walker wasn’t any better. After landing his tee shot on the green on the par three Sth hole he ended up walking off with a five. He moaned about his poor golfing and was promptly told the problem was that he was standing too close to the ball after he hit it. He somehow

managed two pars later on.

George, who is a schoolteacher was having his first golf lesson. “ls the word spelt p-u-t or p-u-t-t” he asked. P-u-t-t is correct he was told.

“Put means to place a thing where you want it. Putt means merely a vain attempt to do the same thing “.

Golf is the perfect thing to do on a Sunday morning because you spend more time praying on the course than if you went to church.

Numbers fell by 180 for a mostly very good quality cattle yarding. There was a good selection of young cattle to suit the feeders and processors along with some well finished grown steers and heifers. There were around 160 cows yarded which were mostly in prime condition.

Most the usual buyers were in attendance and operating with the exception of a major northern export processor who hasn’t attended for a number of weeks.

Young cattle to the trade sold at similar rates with prime vealers selling to 488c/kg. Prime steer yearlings sold from 390c to 470c while the prime heifer yearlings sold from 390c to 469c/kg. Feeder steers and heifers were fully firm with the feeder steers selling from 418c to 478c/kg.

Feeder heifers sold from 430c to 477c/kg.

Grown steers and heifers were up to 12c dearer

with the better quality available assisting in the rise. Prime grown steers sold from 330c to 400c while the prime grown heifers sold from 339c to 395c/kg. Cows were 2c dearer with the 3 scores selling from 275c to 292c/kg. Prime heavy weight cows sold from 300c to 320c to average 313c/kg.

Heavy bulls sold to 306c/kg.

SHEEP 31 March 2021

It was a mixed yarding with a good selection of trade and heavy weight lambs throughout. There was also a large consignment of 1130 Merino wether lambs which were September October 2020 drop and December shorn. They presented in store to forward store condition.

Not all the usual buyers were operating with the absence of two major operators.

Trade lambs were $22 cheaper compared to the previous sales very strong market. The trade lambs sold from $166 to $208 to average between 830c and 875c/kg cwt. Heavy weight lambs were $11 to $17 cheaper with the lambs over 24kg selling from $180 to $246 to average between 720c and 775c/kg cwt. Merino lambs were firm with trade weights selling from $140 to $168 while Merino lambs to the restockers sold from $127 to $143/head. Crossbred lambs to the restockers were firm selling from $102 to $187/ head. Hoggets sold to $215/head.

It was a mostly good quality yarding of mutton where most grades were firm to $5 dearer. Merino ewes sold from $143 to $176 while crossbred ewes sold from $133 to $254/head. Merino wethers sold from $135 to $190/head. Carcass prices ranged from 610c to 665c/kg cwt.

Large human studies show the gut microbiome may be the major driver of this individuality, responsible for some of the variability in how different people metabolise food.

However, as we have written about before, it isn’t yet possible to define the perfect microbiome, or how to get one. What is clear is that any one product is unlikely to achieve this anyway.

So where does this leave us?

If we accept the concept of “gut health” has many nuances, what next?

There is good evidence the health of the gastrointestinal tract and its microbiome are important

for overall health, and certainly the absence of pain and disease boosts our well-being.

But rather than focusing on one food, the evidence for what’s best for our gut tells us we’d be better off looking at improving our overall diet. National healthy eating guidelines universally include advice to eat a variety of foods, including those high in fibre, and to avoid excessive alcohol.

General principles of a healthy lifestyle apply too: avoid substance abuse (including smoking, offlabel prescription drugs and illicit drugs), exercise regularly, take care of your mental well-being and manage your stress.

All these combined are likely to be more helpful for gut health than the latest superfood or boxed cereal.
