Boil water alert for Molong continues Molong Creek Dam storage jumped from 12.5% to 17.5% in 4 days
Late last Friday Cabonne Council, in consultation with NSW Health, issued a “Boil Water” alert to its affected consumers. The decision was taken after determining a deterioration in the drinking water quality of the Molong water supply. Recent conditions, including a large influx of runoff into the Molong and Borenore Dams after prolonged drought, have caused the deterioration to occur. Council immediately took steps to notify key users such as hospitals, aged care facilities and schools. The Council web site was updated, and social media platforms were engaged utilised to spread the message throughout the community. Along with a letter box drop and notices in key locations, visual messaging boards were placed on the approaches to the township of Molong advising of the alert. Cabonne Council is confident the alert will only be in place for a short period and will notify consumers as soon as the risk level is reduced. Cabonne Council General Manager, Brad Byrnes said, “Whilst it is highly regrettable to have to take such measures, it is vitally important that the health and safety of our community is our first consideration and this is
why Cabonne has acted as quickly as possible in consultation with NSW Health. We are confident we can rectify the problem in a relatively short period and will notify consumers as soon as we can when the alert is to be lifted.” Cabonne Council is working closely with the public health agency to identify conditions that will enable the boil water advice to be lifted. To correct the issue Cabonne Council, last Friday, changed the raw water source to the supply via the newly commissioned Orange/ Molong pipeline. The Express has previously reported on this, and other pipelines, connecting Central West water storages. Following mains flushing in Molong, the water quality in the reticulation system is now being monitored. This will continue until satisfactory quality is obtained. The advisory will be in effect until Cabonne Council and NSW Health are confident that there is no longer a public health concern. Council informed the Express that it thanks residents for their patience and cooperation and asks residents to keep in mind that the Boil Water alert is still in place until further notice.
