Old foes thrill the crowds again

After a seven year interval the Molong Bulls Rugby League first grade Woodbridge Cup team returned to the paddock again this year. Last Sunday saw the much anticipated clash between Molong and the Manildra Rhinos at the Molong Rec. They came in their thousands - well there was well over a thousand at the ground - including a massive contingent from Manildra visiting to loudly cheer on the Rhinos, grand finalists last year and currently sitting second on the ladder.

The huge crowd was not disappointed. Many remarked that the game was one of the most exciting, skillful and professional seen at the ground in many a day. Both the Bulls and Rhinos played their hearts out - with determination and respect for their opposition. It was a no-nonsense football game and a good one!.

Manildra held on to their narrow 12-10 half time lead right to the end against the Bulls who attacked their line - time and again but who just couldn’t break through the Rhino’s magnificent defence. (Report page 15) Congratulations to Bulls’ President Jen Barrow, coach Todd Barrow and their committee and players. Game day organisation was faultless. The Bulls, now sitting equal 3rd on the ladder have returned Molong to Rugby League in style and skill.

Molong’s Commonwealth Bank branch employees have donated $500 to the Molong Advancement Group as part of a nationwide community donation program.

Over the next few months, Commonwealth Bank has pledged to donate $500,000 nationally to recognise organisations that make a difference in the communities in which we live and work. Each Commonwealth Bank branch and customer-facing team has been allocated $500 to donate to causes important to their local community.

An Irishman's first drink with his son!

While reading an article last night about fathers and sons, memories came flooding back to the time I took me son out for his first pint. Off we went to our local pub only two blocks from the cottage. I got him a Guinness. He didn't like it, so I drank it. Then I got him a Kilkenny, he didn't like that either, so I drank it.

Finally, I thought he might like some Harp Lager? He didn't. I drank it. I thought maybe he'd like whisky better than beer so we tried a Jameson's. Nope! In desperation, I had him try that rare Redbreast Ireland's finest whisky. He wouldn't even smell it. What could I do but drink it! By the time I realized he just didn't like to drink, I was so off my face I could hardly push his stroller back home!!!

Euchareena & St Joseph’s commemorate “Sorry Day” On Monday 27th May 2019 students from Euchareena Public School and St Joseph’s Molong gathered to commemorate ‘Sorry Day’ as part of National Reconciliation Week (NRW). Students and staff shared a BBQ lunch together, listened to a story about The Stolen Generation and watched a movie about Aboriginal Culture, history and The Stolen Generation.

The afternoon was led by Fleur Magick Dennis.

Fleur is an Aboriginal parent at our school and a member of the Euchareena community as well as an active member of the Molong AECG. We are lucky enough to have weekly Wiradjuri language and culture lessons for our students that Fleur delivers.

NRW is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements,

and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

At the heart of reconciliation is the relationship between the broader Australian community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

To foster positive race relations, our relationship must be grounded in a foundation of truth.

Launch of Operation Armour targeting firearm theft in Regional NSW The NSW Police Force launched Operation Armour in Tamworth to target firearm theft across regional NSW. Operation Armour will be conducted in rural areas across the state in all Police Districts.

General duties officers will be assisted by specialist police from the Firearms Registry, Rural Crime Prevention Team, the Drug and Firearms Squad, and the Criminal Groups Squad’s Strike Force Raptor throughout the operation.

The operation will focus on preventing, disrupting and reducing firearm thefts. Firearms Prohibition Orders and Weapons Prohibition Orders will be conducted, as well as safe storage inspections.

Regional NSW Field Operations, Deputy Commissioner Gary Worboys APM, said the theft and sale of firearms occurs often in regional areas.

“Firearms that are not stored securely or stored at locations that are not in daily or even regular use, make easy opportunities for thieves during break-and-enters,” Deputy Commissioner Worboys said. “When in the wrong hands, firearms are dangerous, and a threat to the community. We will continue to do everything we can do to keep the public safe.”

Western Region Commander, Assistant Commissioner Geoff McKechnie APM, said Operation Armour will also strengthen relationships between local police and the community.

“There’s only so much police can do on our own, we need the assistance of the community in reporting firearm thefts to us, so that we can get more guns off the streets and out of the hands of criminals. We understand that people in rural communities hold firearms for legitimate reasons, so following safe storage procedures

Phil Donato recently met with young emerging leaders of our community who travelled to NSW Parliament from seven different schools in the Orange electorate, as part of the Student Leadership Program.

During the visit students had the opportunity to ask questions of attending MPs about leadership, making decisions and representation.

“It was wonderful to have year 12 student leaders from across the Orange electorate spend the day at Parliament and see what happens during a sitting week,” Mr Donato said.

“The Student Leadership Program is a great initiative which aims to inspire and foster the development of student leaders toward post-school leadership in our community.”

Meet Dave Townsend, builder, husband, father, footy trainer ... Parade Marshall

Dave Townsend is the Parade Marshall for Molong’s ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day services.

A graduate of the Australian Army Ready Reserve Scheme, Dave has been holding this position for 12 years. “I find the role to be a great honour”.

Well, colour me amused!

Turns out this is Australia’s longest continually operating movie theatre, born on the back of a wagon by Manildra local Allan Tom back in the 20’s. Tom toured the land with his carbon projector and slides before laying roots in a one horse kinda backstreet during Australia’s golden age of cinema. Now community funded and restored by a volunteer committee of 4 (including Tom’s daughter Lyn), AMUSU is an art deco jewel of the Central West.

In a single monthly screening, the hall tells its own stories with a nostalgic perfume of worn leather and trodden wood.

The star every month is the supper club that pops up down a fairy-lit lane after the film with tea and treats made with love by theatre President (and Head Projectionist) Joan Stevenson.

Debrief with a sandwich and cuppa while you browse the hundreds of old movie posters and curios in the museum next door. “The theatre is Allan Tom’s museum, while the garage is more movie history… it’s an experience, that’s for sure!” explains Joan.

Cabonnites have memories aplenty of Saturday nights at the local flicks. David MacSmith chuckles as he points out the tiered seating at the back. “That was the Swimming Pool, it’s where the boys all learned breast stroke!” A rite of passage for many a mid-century teen no doubt, when Pud’s your father in law, colour me cringingly unamused.

Observing Dave Townsend in the Molong RSL Sub-Branch ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day services - I figured there must be a story attached to this Parade Marshall who marched proudly alongside returned servicemen, family members, school children and community members. Modest to the core interviewing the quiet achiever was akin to extracting teeth (so to speak).

Here is part of what is a good local story about a local ‘kid’ growing up in a small country town where learning in the outdoors/action learning amongst the familiar paddocks, waterways, and from elders/mentors often has more meaning than that learnt within the 4 walls of a traditional classroom.

Born and bred in Manildra, the son of Wanda and Smokey Townsend, young Dave became a student of the Manildra Public School and then like other district kids - travelled to high school in Molong.

Growing up in rural Cabonne, Dave, like heaps of other young blokes, has passed on the positives of the readily available lifestyle to his own family Cooper now 17, Anabel 15, Oliver 12.

This is, to life within and surrounded by paddocks where generations of kids have followed family traditions of fishing, yabbying, hunting, farming, horses, motors, grease and building.

There have been a number of books written about the ‘outdoor classroom’ for boys by such authors as Australian Steve Biddulph, a psychologist/activist from Tasmania, who writes about the importance of boys, particularly today, touching the soil, working the soil alongside their dad’s or male mentors.

Growing, collecting food for the family table. It’s important. Dave, from his upbringing understands the importance - and the importance of including his daughter, Anabel in traditional family activities with Cooper and Oliver.

As in ‘outdoor classroom’/action learning Dave’s journey has taken many twists and turns, courage and inner belief to arrive to where he is comfortable and at one with the environment he has chosen to live in and to introduce his

family to. For a ‘young bloke’ his journey is far from over and as his interviewer, I hold a deep sense that there are a few more paths for Dave to journey. It will be interesting to see which one he follows.

Such are his range of skills.

Dave eventually found his way to building and is respected as one of the best when it comes to building homes, renovating etc. “I can always remember saying at school that I wanted to be a builder” said Dave. However, a number of twists and turns in the paths and crossroads he has come across along the way took him to other places first. As Buddhist philosophy recognises, these paths and crossroads are in front of us as the journey for the lessons we (individually) need to learn in this life.

Often the case for kids growing up in small country towns, Dave found himself in his teens taking a look over the familiar paddocks and fences to search for a different life, one full of adventure, new experiences and the gaining of a different kind of knowledge and experiences not found in traditional school rooms or small rural towns.

Leaving school during Year 10 - “I picked up odd jobs for six months and then figured out I should go back to school to complete Year 10, 11 and 12.”

After Year 12 - Dave, with his mates Alton Oates, Scott Brown and Roger Buckland, headed off to Kapooka in 1992 as young 19 year old.

Dave chose the Australian Army Ready Reserve Scheme which he describes as “a big eye opener”. “At the time I was a young fellah with not much direction having gone from school to army discipline. “It was a real wake-up call” said Dave who completed his basic training and basic soldiering at Kapooka - after which the trainees had to choose one trade out of the three on offer.

“My Pop, Ray Townsend was a sapper in World War II so my first choice was engineers. However, the Army informed me that there were no positions left in the engineers. I ended up in Infantry - a foot soldier. I found out later that I had been ‘pegged’ by the Army for Infantry because of my build, fitness level and it wouldn’t take much to feed me out in the field where we had to carry our ‘house’ on our back which weighed around 75kg. At the time I weighed the same (75kg) and it was important when training for weeks in rugged bushland that if I ran out of food - my physical condition, without much food, would see me through.

Twenty-six days living and walking

through rugged bushland when based in Brisbane was one time (one of the times) of ‘real life’ training in survival and warfare. Carrying his 75kg pack Dave and his platoon headed off with their sleeping bag, hoochie (tarp), 24 hr ration packs which included tins of pork and cereal, or ham and cereal, cheese (“to bung you up”), tin of baked beans - army style chocolate, tin fruit, ... and FRED a special little can army style opener/and eating device. FRED? Commonly called by those who used it “f...... ridiculous eating device”. And, of course carrying weaponry used during the twenty-six days.

Stretcher carrying was part of the exercise where one of the ‘wounded’ was carried (overhead by four) over 5kms of rugged country and bad weather with ‘warfare’ surrounding the group. “My Sergeant used to say when it rained “I love it ... you love it ... we all love it - it’s good ‘grunts’ weather (Infantry Soldiers are called “grunts” because what we do requires a lot of ‘grunting’)”.

“I was forward scout except at Kapooka I was tail end Charlie.” Why? I had to drag it out of the modest Dave.

He had a knack of figuring out the bush - a sixth sense of potential danger and the presence of ‘enemy’. Skills he had learnt from the paddocks and bushland surrounding the small town he came from - and where he had spent hours of his early life learning the skills of the bush. “Nugget (Dave’s Army nickname) what do you reckon” the Sergeant would ask. “Most of the time I could contact the ‘enemy’ before they would contact me.”

“I’ve had people say to me - and to others - “but you didn’t go anywhere” - meaning I didn’t serve overseas. But those years of training has its effects - something that never leaves you once a soldier always a soldier” said Dave - who for 10 years or more after he discharged had nothing to do with guns or weaponry. So intense was the training.

Returning home Dave started his building apprenticeship with Colin Sharpless (Manildra) - completing the apprenticeship with the Orange City Council. Then he worked for a number of builders, Cabonne Council before he and his delightful wife, Melissa decided to form their own building company with Zac. Philpott (Molong) joining them first as an apprentice.

I like Dave Townsend’s story - one which is reflective of that experienced by countless numbers of rural kids and adults. I think there remains one more journey and more paths ahead for Dave.

Down to Earth Produce @ the Molong Markets It’s pleasing to see that the Molong Village Markets has now attracted Tim Salmon of ‘Down to Earth Produce’ who is a third generation Oberon based family producer of grain fed meats.

Tim will be setting up his market stall at the Molong Markets on Monday where he will be selling a variety of lamb and beef raised and grazed on the family owned property ‘Ambleside’.

‘Ambleside’ is a 1358 acre property now managed by Tim who was raised on the property working alongside his parents and grandparents before heading off to Uni to gain further knowledge in new practices/developments (he holds a Bachelor of Livestock Science) after which he managed and worked a number of other properties..

“I came back to ‘Ambleside’ 10 years ago” said Tim who valueadded to the business by adding farm-gate sales and what is now a popular retail and wholesale delivery service selling direct to customers in Sydney, the Blue Mountains, Bathurst etc.

St John's Reconciliation Service

Congratulations to the congregation of Molong's St. John's Anglican Church who chose to hold what was an inspiring Reconciliation Service last Sunday in respect of the 2019 Reconciliation Week.

Led by Archdeacon Frank Hetherington - the service was a Christian 'masterpiece' organised

by Eleanor Lawson and Angus McDonald of the Parish Council.

Welcome to Country was delivered by Wiradjuri Elder, Aunty Rita Fisher who was born and raised in Molong.

Recently returning to the soils of her traditional 'home' Aunty Rita was greeted warmly by the St. John's congregation.

Gathering as a community of 'one' the congregation stood together as one - white and indigenous - under the 2019 Reconciliation theme of "Grounded in Truth - Walk Together with Courage".

It was a memorable service for Aunty Rita who was warmly welcomed into St. John's Anglican Church by Archdeacon Frank Hetherington and the congregation.

Aunty Rita was able to recall a painful time when she was a young girl being raised in Molong.

"I was confirmed in this Church, it was our family church. It ended up I went to my confirmation dressed in the traditional white, with my friend Jeanette Smith. Jean and Harry Smith came with us which was at a time back in the 1950's when being an aboriginal was not accepted as it is today."

Aunty Rita is still saddened today that her mother, 'Matey' Smith felt that she would not be allowed nor accepted in the church so she did not go to her daughter's special day.

"Today, I am overwhelmed that I have been so warmly invited and accepted by the congregation here today - as a special day during the 2019 National Reconciliation Week" she said. "My mother would be pleased."

The Rev. Gloria Shipp of the Walkabout Ministries, Dubbo, the first Aboriginal Woman to be ordained as a Priest in the Anglican Church of Australia spoke at the service about her life and what led her to the Priesthood and her work helping people in need.

Following the service a special morning tea was held with a range of foods provided by Wiradjuri man, Herb Smith of 'Dreamtime Tuka' of Wellington. The morning tea delights included Lemon Myrtle and Coconut Slice, Native Plum Slice, Roasted Wattle Seed and Passionfruit Muffins and other foods representing the indigenous culture. QANTAS passengers enjoy Dreamtime Tuka foods.

Well done to the visionary Molong St. John's Anglican Church Parish Council Members and the service prepared by Archdeacon Frank Hetherington, Eleanor Lawson and Angus McDonald - supported by congregation members.

A huge step forward for the town, church ... and for demonstrating the real meaning of God's word and the Christian faith.

PM or Pentecostal? Scot Morrison can’t be both.

At first glance it would seem that almost overnight we have found ourselves in the same political predicament as that in which the US became well and truly ensnared as the influence of the salvationfor-money preachers rose and rose.

However, the net was cast long before that.

When in the 1890s Australia’s Constitution was being drafted, the churches began a campaign of petitions calling for prayers to be made part of the daily ritual of parliament, though they were not always used in the various colonial parliaments.

The adherence to the custom waxed and waned until the election of the Coalition government under John Howard in 1996, from which time the influence of extremist Christian doctrine seems to have increased.

The visits to Hillsong church – the largest and wealthiest Pentecostal church in Australasia – by both Liberal treasurer Peter Costello and Labor leader Kevin Rudd during the 2007 election campaign suggest that both major parties were already feeling the need to pander to the Pentecostal movement.

The rise to prime ministership of Scott Morrison, a practicing Pentecostal who has publicly professed his faith on more than one occasion including in the People’s Parliament, reinforces this view.

Now everyone is entitled to their faith and the practice thereof, no matter how bizarre it may appear to non-believers, there’s no arguing that. But when that faith impinges on human rights and the law of the land, then serious questions must be asked. And Australian law often sides with human rights over religious or quasi-religious practice.

In 2018, a Victorian court ruled that the mother of a teenage girl could not refuse permission to allow blood transfusions for her pregnant daughter on the grounds that the procedure was forbidden by their religious cult, the Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Many years before, a West Australian court had ruled in favour of a child whose Witness parents had forbidden it to receive the procedure that would save its life.

And very few people of any faith would defend the right to mutilate young girls’ genitals on religious grounds; indeed, there are those who question the legitimacy of circumcision of male children as a religious practice.

However, we may soon find ourselves having to defend our long-cherished humanist approach.

Recent court rulings in the USA have demonstrated the influence the noisy, cash-heavy minority of Fundamentalist and other related Christian sects – or cults, the distinction is blurred – can

bring to bear on State legislatures in that country. Their Australian equivalent, their roots and philosophies largely in the US and with a fellow-traveller in the Prime Minister’s office, will soon find their voices.

Already, in what appears to be a rush to salvation for the sake of a seat in Parliament and good standing among the Christian extremists in the People’s House, the Deputy Prime Minister has assured farmers he prays for rain every day and exhorted us all to pray more often. Not to be outdone and with no apparent sense of the ironic, his predecessor has suddenly leaped to the defence of the righteous.

Referring to Israel Folau’s recent sacking by the NRL, Barnaby Joyce was quoted in The Age of May 29th as saying: “Your own views on who god is, where god is or whether there’s a god should remain your own personal views and not part of any contractual obligation.”

That is largely true, but the key word is “personal”. Surely an employer has the right to insist an employee – or contractor – refrain from language or behaviour that might bring the organisation or business into disrepute?

And aren’t the Christian churches calling for the return of religious instruction in schools and the right not to employ or dismiss from their employ people on the grounds of sexual orientation or religious belief?

A reasonable adult might argue that you’d have to believe in hell – or a vengeful god for that matter – for Folau’s words to have any effect.

But that argument doesn’t wash if you’re a vulnerable youngster.

On the surface, this might appear all froth and bubble, but it is far more sinister. We now have at our head a Prime Minister who, by his own affirmation, is a practicing Pentecostal, a believer in miracles, one whose tenets of faith include the belief that prosperity is a gift of the Pentecostal god and those who fail to prosper do so because the deity has shunned them, and so are by definition ungodly.

As a Pentecostal, our new Prime Minister believes that he was chosen as such because it was divine will that he lead the nation. He also believes that drought and climate change are the result of his deity’s displeasure and therefore must be endured.

And as a committed Pentecostal, the results of human inaction on the climate crisis are of no consequence; it is all part of the god’s plan and The true Pentecostal waits for the day when all will be swept away in preparation for the second coming and none but they will be saved.

Protestant, Catholic, Muslim – no matter; all but Pentecostals will perish.

And while they await “The Rapture”, the PM and other true believers in the Party and community will be showered with wealth and happiness, oblivious to the torments endured by the ungodly.

At the risk of being thought a cynic, perhaps Morrison may not really believe all this, perhaps he is just using the pretence of “faith” to further his worldly ambitions; after all, Christianity has long been honoured more in the breach than the observance. And that, in some quarters, might be seen as even worse – religious fervour replaced by opportunistic hypocrisy on a grand scale.

Conversely, perhaps he dreams of a day when Pentecostals rule the world, revelling in the prosperity of righteousness while the ungodly Opposition (and many in his own Party), the unsaved aged and infirm, the sinning disadvantaged and despairing writhe in the torments of the damned.

Of course, I may be misjudging the man. He may genuinely be “burning” to see us all saved – whether we want it or not – though I seriously doubt it, and even that breaches the

Whichever it may be, Morrison needs to let the country know. He is supposed to be governing for the majority, not some blessed elite.

The IWW – popularly known as the Wobblies – was the Industrial Workers of the World, an organisation formed in the USA to fight for workers’ rights including their right to join unions.

Its leader, Joe Hill, was arrested on a trumped-up murder charge and executed in Utah by firing squad.

“Roundup” under suspicion Legal action has been launched against agribusiness giant Monsanto by a Melbourne gardener who claims his cancer was caused by the herbicide Roundup.

It will be the first case in Australia following similar trials in the US. In a landmark US court verdict last month a couple were awarded a record $US2 billion ($2.9 billion) after a jury agreed Roundup caused their non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

The verdict has sparked concern on home soil, especially among councils in Sydney that are heavy users of the weedkiller in parks, playgrounds and on roadsides.

Fairfield City Council has phased out Roundup

and Georges River Council has told The SunHerald that its use would be abandoned. Eight other Sydney councils, including Willoughby, Ku-ring-gai, Sutherland Shire and Waverley, are conducting reviews.

Another 18 councils, including InnerWest, Lane Cove and Mosman, continue to use Roundup, arguing they are following the advice of the national pesticides regulator.

NSW Farmers statement on glyphosate safety

NSW Farmers believes it is important that producers have the ability to make choices about their farming systems, including whether or not to use glyphosate.

Chair of the NSW Farmers Ag Science committee Dave Mailler said NSW Farmers has confidence in the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) as an independent, science-based regulator that governs the registration and regulation of use of agricultural chemicals in Australia.

“Last year’s Senate inquiry into the independence of regulatory decisions made by the APVMA reiterated the integrity of Australia’s chemical regulation system,” Mr Mailler said.

Mr Mailler said more than 800 scientific

studies and reviews, including numerous independent regulatory safety assessments, support the fact that glyphosate is safe and does not cause cancer.

“The APVMA has concluded that glyphosate does not pose a carcinogenic risk to humans and has determined that when used in accordance with label instructions, it is safe.”

“Of course, ongoing safety assessment of any chemicals that we use is critical and that is why we have an independent APVMA. Farmers have the most to lose if there is a health risk. In the case of glyphosate, the weight of evidence says that is safe for us to use.”

“NSW Farmers will continue to promote bestpractice use of glyphosate and other chemicals as per label instructions.”

A spokesman for the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority said "we remain satisfied that APVMA-approved products containing glyphosate [the key ingredient in Roundup] can continue to be used safely according to label directions".

The NSW Environment Protection Agency follows this advice. However, the Victorian state government has launched its own review of glyphosate "as a matter of precaution".

Asked whether NSW would follow Victoria's lead at a press conference on Sunday, Better Regulation Minister Matt Kean said the Berejiklian government would be "closely monitoring" Victoria's findings.

Opponents of Roundup have seized on science linking glyphosate with several diseases including non-Hodgkin lymphoma,

pancreatic cancer and leukemia.

Sydney firm LHD lawyers is now considering a class action against Bayer, and personal injury firm Maurice Blackburn is evaluating individual cases.

Principal at Maurice Blackburn, Jonathan Walsh, said the firm had fielded hundreds of inquiries over Roundup in recent months, mainly over workplace exposures.

"We're actively investigating a small number," he said, adding the first would be a "test case" under Australian law.

Jason Reynolds, a science lecturer at Western Sydney University, said the risks were likely to centre on people whose work resulted in extensive exposure, such as council employees.

The strong markets found some extra lambs this week, with numbers lifting by 3,700 head. It was a very good quality yarding, with a good supply of both heavy weight and trade weight lambs throughout. There were only odd pens to suit the restockers. A full field of buyers competed solidly.

Light weight lambs to the processors were approximately firm, Trade lambs were $15 to $23 dearer, Heavy weight lambs were up to $28 dearer, Trade weight Merino lambs sold from $152 to $160/head. Lambs to the restockers and feeders were $8 dearer.

It was a primarily good quality yarding of sheep, where the merino sheep were firm and the crossbreds were $10/head cheaper.

Merino wethers sold to $177/head. Carcase prices for the better covered sheep received from 575c to 620c/kg cwt.

CTLX cattle market report 4/6/19

Agent’s yarded 2150 It was a mostly good quality yarding, with a good selection of cows, along with a couple of pens of well finished grown steers. There were some nice trade cattle yarded, along with good numbers of ideal feeders. All the regular buyers were in attendance and operating.

Young cattle to the trade were firm, light weight feeder cattle were 8c cheaper, while the heavier weights were 4c/kg dearer.

Young steers to the restockers were 5c/kg dearer, while the young heifers were a little cheaper.

Grown steers were 4c dearer, Cows to the processors were 6c to 9c cheaper, and Cows to the restockers were firm to 3c dearer. Bulls sold to 249c/kg.

Molong Bulls Dr. Ross Rec Grounds saw old rivals go at again after a long absence from Molong - about 8 years (from memory).

But nothing has changed as the Rhinos and Bulls fought out a torrid match - the winner of which takes the Kevin Houlihan Memorial "Shield as well as the bragging rights until such time as they match up again in the second round.

First Grade: This match last Sunday was a nail biter from start to finish in front of a huge crowd. Both teams displayed hard and bruising football. It was a great spectacle to watch andplayed in a clean and respectful manner. The score line at half-time had both teams at 6-each after a try and conversion bothways.

The second half saw the tired and wounded boys push themselves to exhaustion butneither would wilt.

Manildra scored a converted try early in the second half to go to a six point lead but Molong returned serve with a runaway try to Tory Madden but unfortunately could not convert it - leaving the final score Manildra Rhinos 12 - Molong Bulls 10.

This game between the neighbouring towns creates a lot of interest and always ensures a large spectator crowd.

Jenny Barrow and the committee deserve credit to be able to successfully cater for such a large crowd. Thanks must go to those who don't mind lending a hand including the people who cover the entrance gates.

Youth League: Manildra were convincing winners over

the Molong boys. The young Bulls gave a great account of themselves but were outclassed by a bigger and more experienced Rhino outfit with the final score Manildra Rhinos 30 Molong Bulls 20.

League Tag: The ladies league tag went the same way with a Manildra win. Our girls tried hard and never gave up - but once again couldn't match the more experienced opposition.

Gallant effort against Wellington

The Magpies commenced the second round in first place (on percentages) on the table. After the the 16-12 loss to Wellington on Saturday, they now find themselves in third position in a crowded leader board.

The game against the visiting Redbacks didn’t reach any great heights. In what was a stop start affair, all Molong’s points came from penalties (courtesy of the boot of Mitch Brown), whilst Wellington scored Note: There will be no games played a try in each half.

Molong started well on the scoreboard this weekend - the Queen's Birthday Long with two early penalties, but the Redbacks Weekend. hit back with an unconverted try at the 15 minute mark. Wellington then kicked two Best & Fairest penalties closer to the break to give them an 11-6 lead.

Youth League: The Magpie’s chances took a dive when Cameron Geddes 3 Brodie Travis was red carded for rucking Stephen Crossley 2 late in the half. Whether it was a send off Brodie Johnson 1 offence is debatable as it certainly did not Luke Miller 1 appear deliberate or malicious, Molong Players Player Harvey Wilson have had this referee for three games this year and he has issued six cards for League Tag: infringements against them, with none Chelsea Amane 3 against the opposing teams, though the Karla Pearson 2 penalty counts appear relatively even.

around and the Magpies must improve their discipline to ensure they don’t put themselves in positions where cards (or even penalties) will occur.

The second half scoring followed a similar pattern, with Molong kicking penalties in the fifth and twentieth minutes.

This gave them a slim 12-11 lead, but Wellington scored their second try with five minutes remaining and this sealed the match for the visitors.

Both teams failed to find any real rhythm, with Molong struggling with execution whenever they ventured into the Redback’s quarter.

Second rower Mark Gavin continued his good form receiving both the Freemason’s Best & Fairest and the Komatsu Player’s Player awards. Veteran Kyle Travis, playing in the centres, received two, with Josh Peffer and Mitch Brown one each.

The Club has asked me to thank all the supporters who attended and in particular the winner of the Freemason’s Prize Draw.

With the long weekend, and the withdrawal of Trangie and Coonabarabran from the competition, the Magpies now have three weekends off.

The next game is on 29th June in Canowindra.

Shame there wasn't more. It

ended up in a three way draw so there were no winners.

Two players played 9 holes in the morning and that was quite enjoyable.

Then they went and had a look at the football. Next week will be an 18 hole x 4 ball best ball. Hope to see you there as the club cannot survive by only 4 or 5 players playing each Sunday. Thank you.
