40Km/h speed limit in Molong CBD?

Molong residents are being asked to provide feedback on a request for a 40km/h speed limit in the town’s CBD. The Cabonne Local Traffic Committee is seeking public comments on a request for the implementation of the 40km/h speed limit in the lower section of Bank Street between Gidley and Watson Streets.

Based on the feedback from the community, the traffic committee will request Roads and Maritime Services to conduct a speed limit review of the street, which is currently has a 50km/h limit.

Public comment and submissions may be submitted to the General Manager, PO Box 17 Molong 2866 or via email council@cabonne. nsw.gov.au until 5pm on Friday 28 February 2020. (See ad page 10).

Manildra swim star is Cabonne’s inaugural Sportsperson Of The Year

Swimming Club, Lachlan is also a member of the Mountains and Plains representative swim team.

Out of the pool, Lachlan is the Manildra Golf Club’s Junior Champion and plays rugby league for the Cabonne Roos. He was also Manildra Public School’s School Captain for 2019.

Molong Museum project

Molong Museum is commencing a project to repair the 1856 building, following the receipt of $15,000 Community Assistance Program funding from Cabonne Council and $20,000 federal grant funding through the Stronger Communities Program. Along with a recent bequest to the historical society, the funds are to be utilised to repair the front verandah and the entry room walls of the museum building.

An outstanding young swimmer from Manildra was named Cabonne Council’s inaugural Sportsperson of the Year on Australia Day. Lachlan Thompson has been a State and NSW Country Championship representative, a Western Region and NSW schools representative and multiple medallist at local carnivals.

Molong Cadet Leaders and Officers met last week to plan ahead for this term. An Awards & Presentation night is being organised for 5 March with Andrew Gee visiting as the official guest.

Easter school holidays bring the Western Region Youth Camp at Lake Burrendong Sport and Recreation Camp. It is a great chance to catch up with friends and make new ones, as well as challenging yourself and developing Leadership Skills with the professional staff.

Young people, aged 8 and older, who want to join our team are welcome to attend 13 February Meeting at Molong Central School Hall at 6 – 8pm with their family.

An information meeting for parents will explain what is involved in being a Cadet member.

And we must mention our own Jade Kirk (R) who was awarded the Cadet Leader of the Year for the Western Region.

To the Molong Pony Club and Molong Camp Draft parents and families who hosted a very successful Country music event @ their Cumnock Road site. We hear some 350 people went along - with local and visiting families having a fabulous time. P.6 To Cabonne Council for being a major sponsor of last Saturday’s ‘Day on the Green’ at Heifer Station (Cabonne Country located winery and vineyard). We hear the event was one of the best held in NSW with tourists and visitors coming from far and wide. Molong certainly benefited P.6

Choked as never been seen before, this little water way does well providing water to Council road maintenance projects, riparian and non-riparian users and provides a recreational feature for the town and environs.

The most asked Paterson question is “Who was the Man from Snowy River?” In true Paterson style it has always been said that it is a collection of people, times and incidents mixed with a bit of poetic licence, producing a wonderful Australian bush yarn. Beer tax sting cuts deeper

HAVING a beer with mates. Life doesn’t get much better or more basic. So why is it so expensive? The answer is simple... Tax. A new report by economist and Emeritus Professor Kym Anderson AC from the University of Adelaide, commission by the Brewers Association of Australia, compares Australian beer tax with OECD and EU countries.

Of the world’s advanced industrial countries, Australians pay the fourth highest beer tax.

From Monday 3 February 2020 it goes up, again, thanks to an automatic CPI increase that slugs beer drinkers every February and August.

Tomorrow Australians will pay $2.26 per litre of alcohol. Looking at countries we typically compare ourselves with, Aussies pay many, many times more in beer tax. In Australian dollar terms, we are paying: • 17-times more than Germany ($0.13), • 15-times more than Spain ($0.15), • 7-times more than the US ($0.31), • 6-times more than Canada ($0.35), • more than 4-times that of France ($0.50), and

approaching double that of New Zealand ($1.26).

“It’s getting to the point that having a beer with your mates is beyond the reach of ordinary Australians,” Brewers Association of Australia CEO Brett Heffernan said.

“By far the biggest cost in the price of a typical Australian beer is tax.

It’s not the ingredients, production costs, advertising, transport or even retail overheads and profits... it’s Australian Government tax.

“A massive 42% of the retail price on a carton of beer, is tax. Of the $52.00 retail price for a typical carton of beer at 4.9% alcohol, $21.84 goes to the taxman. Now it’s going up again.

“Most Aussies simply are not aware they are being hit so hard, or so often, with beer tax. Beer tax has been going up every six months for the last 35 years. This latest slug is the 71st consecutive hike.

“Beer tax is now out of control.

Simply freezing the six-monthly CPI increases will only lock-in the unreasonably high tax Australians are already paying. The rate of beer tax needs to be addressed if punters are to get genuine relief.”

Banjo Paterson’s Waltzing Matilda is known worldwide; many Australians can recite a string of his poems; and his work has been converted to song and theatre.

Remembering Ian Stanford of Molong 9 January 1950 - 25 January 2020

by Rozzi Smith I started kindergarten at Molong Central with Ian and many other local ‘kids’.

Ian’s father, the late Keith Stanford worked as a fettler on the railway with my dad, Harry Smith who was the ganger of the working team. My mum was friends with Ian’s late mother, Joyce. Back in the 1950’s we were part of the extended Molong family which I remember as one BIG happy family made up of what is now known as working class, trades people, farmers, graziers, business owners, bank managers etc etc. As kids we were not aware of any class distinction - we only saw each other as ‘the same’ - leading lives of post-war years when Australia was rebuilding ... and in towns like Molong ... building. Most of us saw each other’s family lives as interesting, their interests equally as interesting, their homes also interesting.

Although at the time not every family in town lived with more than the basics ... some still lived with dirt floors, open fires for cooking, no running water, drop dunnies, etc. When I think back now ... I remember happiness, fun, lots of laughter, that comes with kids growing up together. I also remember the smell of the soil, the fun of the creek ... and the home-made cakes handed out by families who didn’t have much, in material terms, at all. But they shared what they had. Such was the love of the Molong extended family.

Standing at Ian’s graveside funeral service last Friday observing his family, friends - and older versions of the ‘Molong kids of the 50’s and before - I felt proud to have been part of Molong, back then. People like Ian were still, to me, the heart and soul of Molong.

Returning to Molong some 15 years ago - Ian popped in to say ‘gidday’ - and a few years after that - he came in to ask for help in writing a protest letter to the government and greyhound racing authorities about his concern with the decreasing number of track events traditionally held in the smaller towns - which had been catering for the smaller rural breeders and trainers, like himself. Basically, the introduction of TAB events at the larger tracks was slowly taking away the affordable sporting and lifestyle interests of rural people.

Ian and I worked on numerous letters where he was prepared to say ‘how it was’ to protect not only his own greyhound interests ... but those of the rural area ‘battlers’. “It’s the one thing we pensioners can afford to do” he would

Molong Historical Museum’s Historian, Catherine Mackenzie (nee McArdle of Molong) found these two old photographs amongst her late parent’s collection.

say. “We’ve been coming together at these little tracks with our mums and dads, grandparents, since we were kids.”

Eventually, I went to his home at the top of Bank Street where he proudly took me to his backyard kennels. Built to his finances - Ian had created a haven for his greyhounds where they could live safely, whelp, and live close to him ... and his one-on-one training methods learnt from his dad and mum.

On the walls Ian had placed numerous family photos of wins, newspaper clippings, trophies etc. This basic kennel was not of the style or architecture of some of the big breeders and today’s kennels. But with the news reporting of the mass burials of greyhounds that didn’t make the grade for their trainers/kennel owners ... I could see that Ian’s dogs were safe.

One of the stories of Ian’s that I loved was when he spoke about how Keith and Joyce would pack their two little ‘snowy haired’ kids, Ian and sister Lyn, into the back of their family vehicle to head to the track to try their luck with their greyhounds. Cuddled up in blankets next to the Stanford kids would be the greyhound or greyhounds Keith and Joyce had prepared for the track. “It was good at the track because we met up with other greyhound families, like ours - we made a lot of life-long friends”. Another special memory for Ian “if we had a win, we would stop for fish and chips on the way home.”

Ian’s life included being a husband, father, grandfather and good friend to many. He led a simple life - the kind of life that has helped to build the base of Molong’s history, tradition ... and social history. Simple, wholesome ...good!

His great love - daughter Cathy spoke of at her dad’s graveside service - was family ... his greyhounds, the greyhound industry ... his clothing style of Hawaiian shirts and familiar checked shorts.

“I have been looking at some old photographs in my Mum (Betty nee Petrie of Molong) and Dad’s (Jimmy McArdle of Molong) collection and found these two that the Express might be interested in. I don’t know the background/ or why Mum or Dad took the photos. All that is written on the back is Ray Rolfe, electrician. I don’t know the date, but presume it is around the late 1950’s. I like both photos because of the background showing the main street (Bank Street) and parts of the buildings.”

Ray Rolfe was a popular Molong based electrician who came to Molong with his delightful wife Marie and son Jonathan from the Blue Mountains.

The Rolfe’s set up their family business, were terrific community volunteers, loyal and participative community members, golfers - with Ray being a returned serviceman (see his portrait in the RSL’s Ex-Servicemen and Ex-

Servicewomen Portrait Gallery and book). There’s a memorable painting by the late Annie Ingham of Ray casually sitting on a bomb he was preparing to load onto a fighter plane - waving to the camera. It’s worth taking a look.

The two photos show Bank Street - with a loose stone surface, dirt edges, and the petrol bowsers standing at the Shreeves’ garage building next to today’s Chinese Restaurant and also opposite next to the Freemason’s Hotel bowsers belonging to Whittaker’s garage.

Question is? What kind of vehicle (and year/place of manufacture) was Ray Rolfe driving? What was the rally event he was taking place in? What else can readers see in these photos that bring back memories?

Last year Hunter Brazier could hardly believe the news that his Country idol, multiple Golden Guitar winner and horseman extraordinnaire, Tom Curtain and his team were planning to call into the Molong Pony Club/Molong CampDraft grounds the following January as part of "We're Still Here Tour".

This was even better news than the approaching Christmas celebrations for Hunter who grabbed his guitar, and learnt the words to his favourite Tom Curtain song.

The day came, last Friday, when Hunter picked up his guitar, his hat and travelled with his family to help set up the event.

To his delight Tom Curtain invited the youngest son of Becc and Tim Brazier up onto the stage to sing along with him and his musos. Covered in dust after

Hunter achieved his dream as he stood on the stage with his idol strumming his guitar and singing along. His friends and their families, tourists and travellers clapped and cheered the rising young star.

Molong and district residents and local business applaud the initiative of the two local volunteer organisations and Tom Curtain and the 'We're Still Here Tour" who gave their time to bring happy smiles to local farming and small business communities. Over 350 people supported the event with profits donated to the Molong Pony Club and Molong Camp Draft organisations. Both of whom, each and every year hold events that also bring visitors, tourists to town.

"We'll be back!"

Last Saturday's new event in Cabonne Country/Orange attracted a massive crowd to Cabonne Country's 'Heifer Station' (vineyard and winery located at Borenore).

The 'Day on the Green' events are booming across the nation so "why not Orange" said the organisers. Cabonne Country held up their hand "why not us. We've got the best vineyards, wineries and vast paddocks needed for the event". And, we do!

Along came Jimmy Barnes and Cold Chisel - a real crowd pleaser.

Then the tickets started selling late last year - and sold out in no time at all.

Molong did not miss out. The Cabonne Council team were there supporting Orange City Council and Orange 360 led by Caddie Marshall and her team who are working hard bringing the best events to Orange, Cabonne, Blayney and the towns and villages in between.

The good news is that the 3 councils working together with Orange 360 has become a huge success with thousands upon thousands of visitors and tourists discovering the beauty and offerings of this vast region.

Two of Molong's sporting teams were provided with fundraising opportunities at the "Day on the Green" helping the organisers to offer what was one of the best and perfectly organised. Whilst the weather conditions were HOT, the

dust and flies a nuisance ... the Molong attendees told the Express "it was still one of the best times" We hear another 'Day on the Green' at Heifer Station is planned for November - day/date/time and featured muso/artist to be advised.

Molong needs to be ready with shops, cafes, accommodation open and activity in the street with an invitation out to the tourists/ visitors coming to the event ... to come meet us, stay with us, shop with us ... spend the rest of the weekend with us. The Express will be doing its best to get the message out. Hopefully the town will support us and the event.

The Cabonne Local Traffic Committee is seeking community feedback on a request for the implementation of a 40km/h speed limit in the Molong CBD in the lower section of Bank Street between Gidley and Watson Streets.

Based on the feedback from the community, the Traffic Committee will request Roads and Maritime Services to conduct a speed limit review of the street, which is currently has a 50km/h limit.

MOLONG GOLF Pretty good day last Sunday but not many players - 8 in total braved the heat. Few regulars had other commitments.

Considering the recent rain we had a couple of blokes doing some work on the greens and the fairways. Thanks very much to Drew and some other insignificant old bloke.

Last Sunday we had a good day with some beginner golfers coming along which turned our day into a two person Ambrose for 4 people and a stroke event for 4 of us.

The ghost walker was the winner of the stroke event and a ball each went to the winners of the 2 person Ambrose. Drew and Darren were the winners.

It was a much better quality yarding than the previous sale with a good selection of shorn trade lambs along with a few pens of heavy weights. There were also the normal runs of ideal lambs to suit the restockers. A full field of buyers competed in a solid market.

Light weight lambs to the processors were $6 dearer with the 12 to 18kg 2 scores selling from $105 to $156/head. Trade weight lambs were $5 to $8 dearer, with the new season lambs selling from $147 to $192, while the trade weight old lambs sold from $144 to $205/head to average from 785c to 830c/kg cwt.

Heavy weight lambs were firm with the over 24kg new season lambs selling from $192 to $230, while heavy weight shorn lambs sold to $220/head. Restocker lambs were

$10 to $12 dearer with the better lambs selling from $108 to $172 while very young lambs sold down to $40/head. Hoggets sold to $180/ head.

It was a mixed quality yarding of mutton where most grades were $5 to $8 dearer except for the crossbred ewes which were $12/head cheaper with quality a factor.

Merino ewes sold from $68 to $155/ head. Crossbred ewes sold from $100 to $200 while Dorpers made from $90 to $180/head. Merino wethers sold to $174/head. Carcase prices for the better sheep made from 585c to 616c/kg cwt. The restockers paid from $57 to $92/head for fattening age wethers.

cattle along with some well finished trade cattle. Cows were again well supplied and there were a few lots of well finished grown steers and heifers. There were limited numbers of young cattle to suit restockers penned. All the regular buyers were operating along with a couple of extra feeder operators from the north.

Young cattle to the trade were 10c dearer, with prime steer yearlings making from 285c to 309c/kg.The prime heifer yearlings sold to 311c/ kg.

Feeder steers and heifers were 25c to 30c dearer, with the feeder steers making from 305c to 369c, while the feeder heifers sold from 300c to 330c/kg.

Prime grown steers were 10c dearer making from 290c to 320c/kg.

Grown heifers were up to 20c dearer, with the better classes from 277c to 318c/kg. Cows were 10c to 15c dearer, with the 2 scores making from 194c to 252c to the processors, and 260c/kg to the restockers. The better 3 and 4 scores sold from 224c to 284c, with the prime heavy weights averaging 272c/kg. Bulls were also dearer reaching 324c/kg.
