Dr. Ben Edwards and his lovely family Kate, Tim and Claire who have been an enjoyable part of the Molong and district communities for a number of years - and made a difference to the many lives they have touched with their care, sermons, music. The Edwards family leave next week for Canberra and the huge Anglican Cathederal and congregation which will be their new home/role. Ben’s last service in Molong will be at St. John’s Anglican Church on Sunday morning. We wish them well.

Christmas gatherings and lunches/dinners etc are gathering pace around town and district. All enjoyable - but sometimes hard for us (Express) to get along to. We’re doing our best but time and lack of energy hit us hard at this time of the year.

Q: How has your year been?

“It’s been an exciting, challenging and rewarding year. Cabonne Council and staff have been working extremely hard and the results can be seen around the shire.”

Q: What about for you?

“It’s been a busy year. I’ve spent a lot of time in Sydney and Canberra establishing important political links for Cabonne - and travelling to other areas to create links with other councils.

I think it’s important to spend the time and kilometres to do this.

There’s a lot to be learnt about how they operate - processes to be followed - how systems work etc.

Particularly with the politicians, who influence our finances. It’s important that Cabonne has access to grant funding which come from both the State and Federal budgets. Understanding both how the process works and the people involved is important for Cabonne Council and Cabonne Country.

Being the Mayor and leading Council includes working at a strategic level with Governments as well as at the community level.

Strategic because we have to be seen in there if we want to build Cabonne communities of the future and to be able to gain the benefits and opportunities like other councils do.

Q 2019?: “As for Molong, one of our priorities is the new library/ community centre to replace what is the current facility (Molong Community Hall) which no longer meets the demands required by

today’s communities.

We need a facility to seat up to 300 people that provides a really good atmosphere so that Molong can attract conferences, meetings, events, weddings etc. as well as provide a range of facilities for a myriad of community uses.”

Another major item is a new medical centre to serve the Canowindra district - say, similar to the Waluwin Centre in Molong.

We’re always looking to improve the villages and localities.

Cabonne is a somewhat unique shire. It covers a large area with two distinct main town centres surrounded by a host of villages and rural localities.

We have to look to all of these equally. Improvements, footpaths, beautification ... flood mitigation, you name it, are all important if our communities are to thrive and be sustainable into the future.

AUSTRALIA LOOKS SET to experience another angry summer, with the Bureau of Meteorology’s latest outlook indicating the next three months are likely to be hotter than normal.

“Unfortunately, what’s considered ‘normal’ is being turned upside down as a result of climate change,” said the Climate Council’s acting CEO, Dr Martin Rice.

“Climate change is cranking up the intensity of extreme weather events and Australia is particularly vulnerable. We know climate change is making the current drought worse,” he said.

“Many Australians are asking about the link between the catastrophic bushfires currently burning in Queensland and climate change. We know climate change is increasing the incidence of extreme heat and making heatwaves longer and more frequent, leading

Today’s outlook from the Bureau of Meteorology finds the chance of an El Niño forming is 70 percent, roughly triple the normal risk. An El Niño typically brings drier and warmer conditions to eastern Australia.

"Australia’s greenhouse gas pollution levels have been consistently rising for three years, while the Federal Government had failed to roll out any credible climate policy. This needs to change in order to reduce our risk of exposure to extreme weather events” said Dr Rice.

“We still have a window of opportunity to act, but it’s rapidly closing.”

Charlotte’s bucket of love The long drought has brought out the best in entire communities who have reached into their pockets to offer help to those in need. Travelling with her family on a holiday in NSW, four year old Charlotte Purcell of Mansfield Victoria - saw the effects of the drought in the paddocks, towns and villages ... and met families along the way who were in need of help.

The Purcell family returned to Mansfield and spoke to local residents who decided to help. In came the donations ... from hay bales to food packages, personal care items, gifts, boots, shoes, and the list goes on.

Last weekend Charlotte and her family returned to Yeoval, Cumnock, Molong area to deliver the 5th load of gifts to help - and to offer ‘Santa’ toy packages and Christmas foods. An initiative which started from a little girl filling a bucket with rainwater “can we take this to the farmers”. Charlotte’s Drought Journey - Bringing a bucket of love to the farmers, commenced.

growMOLONG Inc. “Let’s fix the flood problem first” growMOLONG, a group of entrepreneurial traders, business owners, building owners and like minded residents is still in its formative stages - but already has a wish list of ideas to put forward to aid the growth of the town.

While still going through incorporation stages, the group met this week and agreed on one of the first priorities (for businesses and residents alike) - flood mitigation.

The group will seek for Cabonne Council to revive the Flood Mitigation Committee to continue its work with Consultant’s engaged

by Council to review flood threats, causes and mitigation options.

Les Dean and Rozzi Smith, travelled around

Molong last week to look at some of the problem areas which many see as continuing to be potential flood problems. Former longtime SES member and Molong resident, Bob Philpott showed them some areas which have concerned locals for decades.

They took a look at Railway Bridges 1 (left) - 2 and 3 (right) and other problem spots.

The group is writing to the Council urging that the former Committee, together with expert consultants, get back to work on the issue.

It’s fair to say that the the thing that most main street businesses (and potential businesses) fear most is that Bank Street will go underwater again.

It was easy to see what Geoff Philpott was wishing for from Santa when the Molong Men’s Shed members tried to get him back selling cakes at their Christmas Fundraising stall last Friday at the Bank Street Kiosk.

“Awww come on mate - we need you here writing raffle tickets” said the boys. “I’m quite happy looking after the billycart” said Geoff.

We haven’t heard who won the handmade blue and red billycart made by the men’s shed members. Then again, we haven’t seen that Philpott bloke around town either!

Farewell... Norm Hicks (From the Eulogy given by Norm and Joan’s family).

“I will give just a small window of dads 93 years.

Dad was born to Ralph and Florence Hicks on 29th March 1925 in Wyong NSW. Dad was the second eldest of four children. His siblings were Eva, Len and Gwen.

Sadly, Eva drowned in a flooded river at a young age, which effectively made Norm the eldest.

Dad went to Womberal PS where he walked 6miles there and back and in later years he rode his horse. Not particularly liking his teacher at the time, he finished primary school and chose to go to work on the family farm.

Soon after Dad and his father started a milk run from Tumbi Umbi to the Entrance using horse and cart.

Even though he wasn’t keen on the 3am starts, he was very proud of his milk run and he enjoyed meeting and chatting with the customers. Many a story were retold in his later years. It was during this time he met our mum Yvonne. After sometime he asked her out to the pictures.

Dad arrived at her door wet and with a big grin on his face and suggested she bring an umbrella as his car roof was leaking. That was the beginning of their courtship.

Later they married and had four sons and a daughter Warren, Stephen, Bradley, Lauretta & Murray.

After working on the milk run he started a roof tile factory, making the tiles by hand, where he employed several of his family.

After a while they moved to Bowral where he managed a property running sheep. Dad left this job and moved out to “Coowong” at Canyonleigh. He managed this property for Doctor Hughes who had a large and partially undeveloped property.

Just for your information, dad really didn’t like sheep he always reckoned that they had no brains because they

wouldn’t go where he wanted them to. This gave him a good reason to turn to cattle.

Dad spent a lot of time clearing ground to create new paddocks, cutting a road down the side of a cliff with dynamite so he could get vehicles to the bottom paddocksAlso building-an air strip for landing a plane so they could load super to spread over the paddocks. When dad was asked to go up in the plane to show the pilot where the boundaries were, he wasn’t very comfortable with this because he never liked being in con- fined spaces.

As kids, if we gave dad the shits, he would get the stock whip out & give us a running head start. Fortunately we only heard the crack behind us, which scared the pants off us. No wonder Brad was a good runner and I was a pretty good high jumper.

Dad would take us down to the bottom paddocks with him to muster both sheep and cattle, at lunch time he would cook chops on a wire rack made from fencing wire, then he would hang it in tree for the next time. He always carried a quart pot for his billy tea and used the nearby creek water.

In his free time, dad loved going fishing at Cullburra and Jervis Bay. He would have loved to catch a big fish, but had to be satisfied with what he got. He went out on a charter boat a few time and was crook as a dog, but he still persevered.

From there we moved to Bundanoon and dad worked for WA Flick and Co. This was a cattle property and he stayed employed by them until he retired in his seventies.

Norm thoroughly enjoyed his work with this company, they were true friends and like family to him. He went all over the country, buying and selling cattle and bulls.

Dad had a firm knowledge of cattle, horses and crops, and people respected his knowledge of the land.

In the early stages of our family being at Bundanoon,

mum and dad separated, and things were tough for him for a while.

Dad’s shopping was interesting. He had a shaving cabinet full of Palmolive Gold soap. 3-4 containers of Brylcream, 8 packets of steel wool and of course endless amounts of Saos & Billy Tea. Dad learnt to make double batches of Anzac biscuits in the wood stove. Huge pots of mince curry, which were sometimes very green and a huge pot of mashed spuds.

When Dad and Joan met, this was the beginning of a lovely relationship, and they married shortly after. Sue will fill you in on that stage of dad and Joan’s life in her talk. Norm and Joan moved to Yarrangrove and dad worked there for several years. This was another stage in his life and he thoroughly enjoyed this time.

Dad always had pride in whatever he did.

If he did something- he did it properly- NO SHORT CUTS. He walked with purpose in his stride.

He enjoyed a good laugh, a good yarn. A morning cup of tea. Family time. Time in their garden. A game of bowls and a beer afterwards. time with his Probus friends.

One of dad’s greatest attributes was his art of listening.”

Local Stories:

Blackall's Chemist Shops in Molong and Cumnock Our sincere thanks to Cumnock Historian, Val McKenzie who unearthed this story about Blackall Chemist Shops in Molong and Cumnock. In fact, Blackall's in Molong was located in the premises now occupied by the Express.

Gregory and John Blackall established chemist shops in Molong and Cumnock in 1933.

The brothers were the sons of Alice and Dr Patrick Blackall. Dr Blackall was educated and obtained his medical degrees in Ireland before immigrating to Australia. In 1889 he was registered to practice as a legally qualified Medical Practitioner in New South Wales and married Alice Cecilia Hayes at Glebe in 1899. The couple moved to Queanbeyan to live, where he practised as a GP until 1931 and was four times Mayor of Queanybeyan.

He died in Canberra on 8 December 1932 and was survived by his wife Alice and seven children.

Gregory Michael and John Henry Blackall did their Pharmacy training at University in Sydney in the early 1930s. By October 1933 the brothers had graduated as Pharmacists and set up a second Molong Pharmacy (John J O’Connor owned the other chemist shop) in the shop next to the Freemason’s Hotel in Molong (now the Molong Express office).

Younger brother John opened a Chemist Shop in Cumnock next to Windred’s refreshment Rooms in November 1933.

Gregory Michael Blackall was born in 1902 at Queanbeyan, and married Anita M T McDonagh in Sydney in 1929. Anita was one of seven children of Dr John and Anita McDonagh. Dr McDonagh was an honorary surgeon to the JC Williamson theatre circuit, owned Drummoyne House, and mixed with overseas actors and theatre people.

Dr McDonagh died in January 1920 but left little money for his family to survive on and Drummoyne House had to be sold.

The three eldest daughters, Isabella, Phyllis and Paulette McDonagh were pioneer filmmakers during the era of Australian silent cinema (18961930). Their silent movies included “Those Who Love”, produced in 1926, “The Far Paradise” in 1928, and “The Cheaters” in 1930, the latter converted to a sound version in 1931. The sisters next produced several short documentaries including one about the racehorse Phar Lap, “The Mighty Conqueror” (1931), another featuring Don Bradman, “How I Play Cricket”

(1932) and a First World War feature, “Two Minutes Silence” (1932) which was the last film they produced.

Anita Blackall would have found her move from Sydney to Molong in 1933 a big change to adapt to, plus having four children to bring up as well – Elizabeth (Betty), Moya, Ann and Patrick.

Newspaper reports show that both Greg and Anita joined in many Molong activities in the eight years they spent living in a house on Edward Street. Anita was a member of the CWA, the Red Cross, the Molong Hospital Women’s Auxiliary and performed in the 1936 Molong Amateur Dramatic production of “Aren’t we all?”

The 1930s were not great years to start businesses, being a time of economic depression and high unemployment in Australia.

John Blackall’s Chemist Shop in Cumnock closed down in 1937.

John met Miss Eileen Crawford from Delegate, NSW, while she was working at Black Bros Store in Cumnock. When John moved to Brisbane, Eileen followed, and they married in 1937. They moved to Sydney to live in the 1940s and had four children – John, Marilyn, Peggy and Peter. John Henry Blackall died on 15 June 1960, Sydney, aged 52 years. Eileen Blackall died on 10 September 2007 at Mona Vale, aged 95 years.

Greg Blackwell was bankrupted in 1941 and closed down the Molong shop. The family moved to Rose Bay, Sydney in the 1940s and Greg continued working as a Chemist. They divorced in 1961 and Greg later lived with his daughter Elizabeth and her family.

Anita Blackall died at Sydney in 1987. Gregory Blackall died at Sydney on 20 June 1988 aged 85 years.

Elizabeth remembers her time in Molong and returned to Molong with other family members some years ago to visit the house they lived in at Edward Street and the Pharmacy, now the Molong Express Office.

“What!” said a furious Ray Gravell, “How did you let them get three points?” Gareth replied apologetically: “I was sent off with 20 minutes to go.”

Recollections of school years in Molong

By Trevor Bryce Trevor, now of Brisbane, sent us this article. Trevor is a former pupil of Molong Central School, and was in fact, one of the first intake of pupils when the school opened in 1949. He was in fourth class then, and completed Primary education at MCS. (Continued from last Week)

I was nine years old in my fourth class and already my mother was saying that one day I would become a University Professor. She was not being complimentary. She said it was because I was alway scruffy-looking and walked around in a dream. When I told my wife about this many years later, her response was ‘Well at least that’s one thing your mother got right about you.’ In our fifth and sixth years, our teacher was the highly respected W. G. (Bill) Moore. He had a round, cherubic face which turned bright red whenever he became angry at our inattentiveness.

But otherwise, he was a gentle, gracious man, immensely likeable and an excellent teacher. Towards the end of the school day, if we had behaved well and finished our work early, he would read to us a chapter from one of the novels of Enid Blighton (This was of course in the days before she became politically incorrect.)

In what I think was my fifth school year, I was chosen to play the lead in a school play called ‘The Musical Prince’.

The plot was basically that the prince was supposed to marry a beautiful princess from a neighbouring kingdom (for reasons of state), but he was much more interested in music and spent most of his time ‘downstairs’ in the palace training a choir of cooks and kitchen hands. One of the songs I was supposed to rehearse with them went like this:

In these final years of my Molong education, the school’s headmaster was Herb Whiteley. His daughter Judith was in my class. She was mercilessly bullied by the other girls, because she was the headmaster’s daughter and considered to be ‘stuck up’. Some of her worst times were in the classroom when the teacher left it for brief periods. The girls took the opportunity to come up behind her and pull her hair, punch her, throw her books on the floor, and scatter the contents of her pencil case everywhere. Judith simply accepted it all without flinching or retaliating. To our everlasting shame, the boys not only did nothing to intervene, but found the spectacle an enjoyable entertainment. I still feel remorse about this, reflecting on our cruelty as we revelled in the torture of one of our classmates, and on her courage and dignity in enduring it and rising above our meanspiritedness.

The one snag was that I didn’t want to be a musical prince and protested loud and long about it. Much cajoling from my parents and the teacher who was producing the play was necessary before I reluctantly consented. But when I found out that after the ‘scullery maid’ revealed who she really was, I had to be entranced by her and kiss her on the cheek, I really drew the line! The princess was a pretty girl called Judith Scott, but I was in no mood to appreciate that when I thought of what my classmates would say. Again under much pressure, I finally agreed, even though I knew my ‘friends’ would never let me live it down. And they didn’t.

For some time afterwards, they called me Judith.

One of my father’s regular customers in the bank was Ted Weisel, headmaster of the local Fairbridge Farm school. He and his wife Muriel became close friends of my parents. Ted was a fine batsman and captained the Molong Cricket Team. His son, also called Ted, was the same age as me, and I often spent the weekend at the Weisel house adjoining the Fairbridge Farm compound. I use the word ‘compound’ advisedly. Fairbridge Farm proper was isolated from the outside world by a high fence and the headmaster’s house stood outside it. During one of my visits I approached the fence out of curiosity and started talking to several of the brownshirted, brown-shorted boys the other side of it. They were very inquisitive about things on my side of the fence, and talked in a funny way, so it seemed to me. After a few minutes Mr Weisel came up to me and politely led me away, telling me that I shouldn’t go there again. In all my time in Molong, Fairbridge Farm was hardly ever mentioned. We were never told anything about it in school, and I don’t recall any of the children from there ever coming into Molong Town, let alone visiting the picture theatre or participating in local school sporting events. It’s almost as if there was a widespread tacit agreement to

Anyhow, to win the prince’s interest, the princess put on a scullery maid’s uniform over her royal clothes and joined the choir.

Everything in my life came to an end – or so I thought, when at the end of my sixth class year my parents told me that we would be leaving Molong for good and going to live in Brisbane. My father had been transferred to a branch of the Commonwealth Bank there. Again my rebellious streak came out. I declared that they could go to Brisbane if they wanted, but I was staying put! For a time principle definitely took precedence over practicalities. But I eventually resigned myself to the realization that I had no choice in the matter. After my final day in school, I was walking down the steps to the quadrangle when Bill Moore came after me. He shook me warmly by the hand and wished me all the best for my future.

That is the last contact I had with Molong school. But the memories of my time there have never left me, and I will always be grateful for the enormous role my first teachers played in shaping my future career.

NEWS can Brag

Luke was missing - but the team led by the invincible Bronnie Trethowan, ably assisted by Fitzy and Trev won the Spring/ Summer 2018 BRAG event.

It was a tough game against the Boomey Bangers who were on equal points going into the last night of play. They played against each other and it went down to the wire - 9 all going into the last end.

The mighty News team came out on top by 1 shot thanks to an amazing last effort by no other than Bron who told the Express "the pressure was ON".

MANILDRA BOWLS We held our presidents day on Sunday 2nd December 2018 and President Duke and the Club would like to thank all twelve teams that participated. A great day was had by all and the winners on the day were Les Rouse, Mark Gosper, Iain Campbell & Glenn Gosper. While the runners up were Greg Trevena, Tim Williamson, Ned Kurta and Ben Allcorn.

There was one game of minor-major pairs played on Saturday, and in a game

that came right down the the last end Sam Pallier and Glenn Gosper got home by two shots over Greg Pallier and Ben Allcorn.

Friday twilight winners this week were Greg Pallier and Anthony Regan while Sam Pallier and Duke Gosper were runners up.

The green will be closed now for two weeks and will re-open up for Twilight bowls on the 14th December 2018.

MOLONG GOLF Last Wednesday 31 ladies enjoyed a fun Christmas lunch at the Molong Club House. We were joined by members from Yeoval, Cumnock and Manildra and the delicious lunch was supplied by the CWA ladies (Thank you CWA). Ann Wood provided us with 2 interesting quizzes which created quite a bit of discussion re the answers which had to be something to do with golf for one and the name of a flower for the other, and we all received a surprise Christmas gift. It was a really lovely day.

At our monthty meeting it was decided to have our AGM and closing day on Sunday 6th January, it will take the form of a 9 hole 3 par game of golf followed by the meeting and then a BBQ tea.

It was also unanimously agreed that Peter Stubberfield and Bell had done a wonderful job on fixing the cups in the sands and a big thank you goes out to them both, it has made putting so much better.

The ghost walker has really hit his stride with t-off drives as he says "straight down the middle" and fairway drives as well. Lamb numbers decreased this week with agents only yarding 7875 Sheep numbers this week saw an increase with agents yarding 3550 Lamb numbers declined and quality was good for well finished new season lamb and shorn lamb. There was mostly trade weights penned, along with a few heavier lambs and store lambs were well supplied.

Light weight lambs were up $5 dearer, while medium to heavy trade lambs were firm to $5 dearer, lambs to restockers were firm, whilst heavy weights were also up by $5. Mutton were up $1 to $9 dearer, mutton worked out be 420 to 440c/kg cwt.

CTLX cattle market report 4/12/18

Numbers increased slightly this week for a yarding of 2265 cattle. Yearlings were well supplied along with feeders, trade cattle were limited, grown steers were also limited. Cows again were well supplied.

Young cattle to the trade were 10c to 15c

Magpies & Bowlers Struggling Greg Pringle

Last season Grand Finalists Country and Cudal had little trouble winning last weekend as Magpies and Molong Bowlers continue to struggle for consistency.

As the Oilsplus Senior competition nears the halfway mark premiers Country as usual remain undefeated with Cudal a close second.

The third semi final spot is anyone’s guess as Millthorpe improve.

At Cudal the home team elected to bat after Jacob Evans again lost another toss. In a desperate move to win a toss Magpies players snuck a two headed coin into the toss only to hear Jacob call tails.

Cudal’s top order batted sensibly with veterans Andrew Smith (69) and Scott Barrett (103no) leading the way. Despite trying to get out a couple of times and Magpies not letting him, Barrett batted very well and played some great aggressive shots. Since quitting politics Barrett hasn’t looked back and is in fine form this season.

Smith continues to bat consistently well despite being told he has to be home by 5pm. Cudal 3 for 210 after their 40 overs after only being 67 at drinks. Once again Magpies fielding let them down at vital stages. Magpies best player Adam Osborn tried hard and bowled consistently taking 2 for 54. Jacob Evans 1 for 36 after 9 overs also bowled well despite playing with a significant shoulder / chest injury.

Jacob fell off his bike in last weeks tour de flop when at high speed he hit an old lady who was jay walking against a red light near Gumble. The lady is fine but Jacob is a mess.

In reply Magpies didn’t offer much and if it wasn’t for Adam Osborn (30) and Jacob Evans (30) contributing to Magpies overall total of 159 all out, it would have been embarrassing. Lee Cornish 2 for 37 and C Spratt 3 for 24 were Cudal’s best

bowlers with special mention to captain Chris Douglass who collapsed after bowling just one ball and dislocating his shoulder. If you need a break Chris just get the 12th man on, don’t make a scene.

At Hunter Caldwell Molong Bowlers won the toss and elected to bat. Veteran David Hobbs having a great season since departing Magpies top scored for bowlers with 34. He may well end up the buy of the season. The NSW veteran is in super form. Unbelievably the next five batsmen all recorded ducks in one of the biggest collapses in memory. Bowlers at one stage 5 for 11. Could have been worse though, super sub Glenn Meehan didn’t play as he slept in past 1pm. If Glenn did play it would have been six ducks. Luckily tail enders T Sullivan (33), R Wilson (20) and R Whittle (24) helped get the team into triple figures and they were all out in the 39th over 130. Stu Brisbane 3 for 6 and Sir Jock Haynes 3 for 27 were Country’s best bowlers.

In reply Country passed Bowlers total but lost 5 wickets on the way to make it look closer than it actually was. Country won in the 20th over Trent Frazer (48), S Clayton (23no) & Dan Toynton (26no) the best batsman. Joel Packham bowled very well for bowlers taking 3 for 41 in the absence of the teams regular bowlers who missed the game gone walkabout.
