Phil Donato welcomes new police presence

Following a meeting with local business owners in Canowindra, in which they raised concerns about the lack of police presence in the town due to an infilled job vacancy since April, Mr Donato took this up face-to-face with the Deputy Commissioner.

The Canowindra News reports Mr Donato saying “I am pleased NSW Police have now responded, having announced that the vacancy will be filled in October. In the interim police will be tasked to perform proactive duties.

It’s important for communities such as Canowindra to have a regular visible police presence and police engaged with their community.”

Lake Rowlands capacity could double with height increase

The Blayney Chronicle reports Central Tablelands Water are taking the impacts of the current drought and water supply crisis to lobby governments for an expansion of the storage capacity of Lake Rowlands.

It’s not a new idea either. Increasing the height of the dam wall has been on and off the agenda since the 1990’s When Lake Rowlands was first designed the dam wall was meant to be 3 metres higher than it currently is.

However when Forbes Council pulled out of the supply network agreement in the 1940’s, the decision then was made to build it to its current height.

The dam though can be brought back to it’s original height says the Chairman of Central Tablelands Water, Councillor David Somervaille, albeit with a few issues that have arisen in the past seven decades.

“Lake Rowlands full capacity at the moment is 4.5 gigalitres,” Cr Somervaille said.

“The smallest proposal would almost double it and take it to approximately 8 gigalitres.”

Winter rainfall data shows it was a dry season EVERY location in the Central West has received less than half of its average winter rainfall, new data shows.

The long, dry season did not offer rainfall reprieve from the drought with many local government water restrictions getting tighter and dams continuing to dry up.

The Blayney Chronicle reports during an average winter the wettest locations in the region are Orange (232.0 millimetres), Oberon (222.7mm) and Lithgow

(198.6mm), but each received well below average rainfall this season with 106.4mm, 64.1mm and 84.6mm recorded respectively.

Traditionally Nyngan, Bathurst and Mudgee are the Central West’s driest locations each winter and this winter was no exception with each recording well below average rainfall.

Nyngan usually receives 92.3mm of rain during the season, but only 12.0mm fell, while Bathurst’s 41.8mm of rain was way down on the season’s long-term average of 119.4mm.

In Mudgee which is usually the region’s third driest location during winter, just 22.2mm of rain was recorded by the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) which was way down on the usual 120.6mm.

During the BoM’s seasonal outlook that was released on Thursday, senior hydrologist Dr Paul Feikema said Australia had just had one of its driest winters on record.

The Parkes Champion Post reports Mr McCormack - along with Minister for Regional Services, Decentralisation and Local Government Mark Coulton, Inland Rail CEO Richard Wankmuller, Parkes Mayor Ken Keith OAM, Forbes Mayor Phyllis Miller and Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) and INLink staff - inspected the completed work on the North West Connection, located near Brolgan Road and Coopers Road, on Friday morning.

It’s been described as another important project milestone, an historic step.

“This is huge, this is the connection that connects to the rest of the country,” Mr Wankmuller said.

“This historic link is a vital connection to the Inland Rail spine and the East-West network to Perth.

“What was a greenfield site now accommodates this significant rail connection that will be handed over in the coming weeks to become operational. In the second quarter of next year, we anticipate it will also link into the Parkes to Narromine line.

NSW drought: RFS urges members to consider ‘dry firefighting strategies’

VOLUNTEER firefighters in Dubbo, Narromine and Wellington are being urged to be be “smart with water use” and to consider “dry firefighting strategies” due to the ongoing drought.

Currently 100 per cent of the Central West is drought affected, while in the Central Tablelands the figure is 98.5 per cent.

The NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) issued a statewide alert to all of its members on Tuesday afternoon which said the drought had had an impact on the ability to fight fires.

Pedestrian Access and Mobility Plan and Bike Plan

Cabonne residents are invited to contribute to the review and update of the Cabonne Council Pedestrian Access and Mobility Plan (PAMP) and Bike Plan by completing the online survey at www.cabonne.nsw.gov.au/News/PAMP-andBike-Plan Constructive Solutions is working with Cabonne Council to update the Bike Plan and Pedestrian Access and Mobility Plan (PAMP). A vital component of updating the plans is gaining an understanding of how the community uses the current infrastructure, and identifying where community needs are not being met. A Bike Plan and PAMP is a strategic action plan for Council, which provides a framework for developing safe, convenient and connected pedestrian and cycling routes, and identifies the need for specific facilities.

This ultimately allows Council to construct the required facilities, as once the plans are completed, Council will be in a stronger position to access grant funding from the State and Federal Government for works identified in the plans.

Constructive Solutions would like to hear your views on the current infrastructure, and where you feel more work needs to be done.

A new relocation, business and investment website has been launched under a joint regional economic development project involving Cabonne, Orange and Blayney Councils.

Under the new branding of THINK Orange Region, the new website is designed to be the first online portal for people to visit to obtain information on either relocating, doing business or investing in the region.

Promoting the message of aspirational, accessible and achievable, THINK Orange Region is set to provoke people to action and get them to THINK Space, THINK Opportunity, THINK Business, THINK Connectivity, THINK Investment and THINK Balance.

The project was funded by the NSW Government under the Regional Growth – Marketing and Promotion Fund and is part of the delivery of the Orange, Blayney and Cabonne Regional Economic Development Strategy 20182022.

Minister tells disgruntled and disillusioned communities to ‘move on’

The Minister for Local Government Shelley Hancock has been grilled about the NSW Liberals and Nationals’ forced council mergers during budget estimates this morning.

The Minister said communities who had been forced to amalgamate were “now accepting” of the forced mergers despite multiple councils pushing for de-mergers.

Shadow Minister for Local Government Greg Warren said one of the worst examples of the government’s forced mergers policy was in the Snowy Valleys.

Despite being one of the most financially viable councils in the state, the government forced Tumbarumba to merge with Tumut – forming the Snowy Valleys Council.

The result has been disastrous, with allegations of a missing $4 million from the council’s coffers.

Three directors at the council were also recently sacked in a move that shocked the community.

Since the forced merger, a significant portion of the Tumbarumba community has pushed for a de-merger but to no avail.

The Minister said the issues of de-mergers was a matter she would “decide upon in the coming weeks and months.”

To date, the Minister has refused to visit Tumbarumba. She said she would visit before making a decision on the de-merger only “if time permits”.

The Minister also offered this piece of advice for disgruntled communities who had been impacted by the NSW Liberals and Nationals forced mergers policy: “move on and move forward”.

“The Minister is clearly out of her depth regarding this very important portfolio,” Mr Warren said. “How can the Minister expect to make to make a decision in the best interests of the community of Tumbarumba if she won’t even meet with the residents?

“I was in Tumbarumba and couple of weeks ago so I know firsthand how angry and disillusioned the community is with the Minister and the NSW Liberal-National government. Telling residents to “move on” speaks volumes of this government’s attitude towards regional and rural NSW. “Let’s make this crystal clear, residents in communities like Tumbarumba, Cootamundra and Gundagai have not and will not accept this government’s forced mergers policy with has inflicted immense damage on those close knit communities.”

Cabonne Community Transport Service reported a big year to last week’s Cabonne Council meeting.

The Community Care Supports Programs ADHC funding of $9,230, ceased 30 June 2018, due to the roll out of the NDIS. The Services’ reserves $161,265 creates a buffer, which will allow for this loss of funding and will allow the service to remain sustainable during the uncertainty of the continuation of block funding post 2020.

Last Sunday afternoon a group of interested locals attended the first of several “Try Disc Golf” days at the Molong Golf Course, which was organised by the Central West Disc Golf Club.

This day was to give locals an understanding of the sport of Disc Golf in the lead up to the NSW Open Disc Golf Titles being held here in Molong over the October Long Weekend, as well as to discuss the installation of a permanent public course at the Molong Golf Course.

A fun day was had by all who attended, with a good sized group turning up to try put this new sport and many showing some definite talent in the sport.

Disc Golf is currently one of the fastest growing sports in the world, with an estimated 2 million people now playing the sport around the world. The rules of the

game are roughly based on those of traditional golf, but instead of hitting a ball players throw specially modified Frisbee-like Discs into elevated metal baskets. It is also an extremely addictive sport which is accessible for people of all ability levels.

Keep an eye out for upcoming “Try Disc Golf” days which will be advertised around town and in local media in the lead up to these days.

Over the next few weeks you will also see the appearance of some new additions to the Molong Golf Course as the Disc Golf Course starts to take shape.

What should I say?

Over the years, the Express has received letters from readers asking for advice. These have been filed and kept since Nancy Leathem’s day back in the 1890’s.

We have kept the file and added, over the years, a few more letters from readers seeking wives, husbands, partners, friends - and others asking for advice. The Express has not had a ‘Dear Dorothy Dix’ column before ... until this week. We’ve decided that ‘it’s time’. Here is a letter sent back in the 1940’s. We invite today’s readers to send in their advice ...

Dear Mrs Leathem, The Molong branch of ‘Women Who Want’ write to you in an endeavour to correct a few misunderstandings we have heard are being spoken by the people of this fine town.

Firstly, yes, we are ‘Women Who Want’. Given the lack of handsome men in this town and district is there anything wrong, we ask, for we ‘Women Who Want’?

Yes, we do want gentlemen. Fine upstanding men who have perfect manners, carefully waxed moustaches, and who wash regularly. Men who tip their hats to us. Men who walk on the edge of the road so that we women are not subjected to mud and other such things flicked up by horses, buggies and carts.

Whilst we are proper and fine mannered women who dress eloquently at all times, we are not adverse to the odd bit of ‘slap and tickle’ or romp in the freshly cut hay. Out of sight of others of course. ‘Manners at all time’ is our motto.

However, we do despair of the rumour mill which we hear is saying that we are brainless, flash, tough old busy bodies who drink rum, enjoy wild sex parties, key swapping and indulge in the most unchristian behaviour.

Our response? Not on Sundays!

Bruce Pascoe’s ‘Dark Emu’ puts forward an argument for a reconsideration of the hunter-gatherer tag for precolonial Aboriginal Australians. The evidence insists that Aboriginal people right across the continent were using domesticated plants, sowing, harvesting, irrigating and storing – behaviours inconsistent with the hunter-gatherer tag. Gerritsen and Gammage in their latest books support this premise but Pascoe takes this further and challenges the hunter-gatherer tag as a convenient lie. Almost all the evidence comes from the records and diaries of the Australian explorers, impeccable sources.

“Molong - the place of many dogs?”

One has to wonder if the town’s Wiradjuri name should be changed from ‘the place of many rocks’ to the ‘place of many dogs’.

The reason being the number of complaints coming into the Express each and every week - and on social media - and in main street conversation.

Barking dogs - wandering dogs - dogs attacking each other - dogs attacking people, sleep deprived families. The problems and annoyance is definitely on the rise and with it the health and safety concerns of residents and their pet dogs, cats and livestock.

This week, the barking dog and dogs on the loose (day and night) problems continue in Gidley Street, Wellington Street, Lee Street, Phillip Street, Park Street, Marsden Street.

Betts Street, Molong Street, Packham Drive.

The problem also continues with dogs left in the Council Pound - of course a caged dog will bark all day and night!

Solution: Residents affected need to be able to safely approach, talk and negotiate with barking dog/wandering dog and cat owners about the problem they are experiencing. (Note: Some residents in doing so have been abused, humiliated and some given the classic response”what dog!”)

There are devices on the market suitably manufactured to retrain barking and wandering dogs. There are also devices which residents can place in their own yards to stop outside dogs and cats from entering.

Simply google ‘barking dogs’.

Let’s hope that Cabonne Council management, councillors, the mayor, dog catcher etc - will read this column and do something about the problem. Is it timely for a Council Ranger to patrol the streets at night to identify and solve the growing problems?

Crackers? Some are saying that crackers sound their way around town when drugs arrive? Sounds true? Sounds false? Good story? Real? Whatever the problem - see it, report it so that the Police can figure it out.

The loud bangs every couple of weeks from somewhere in town is also the reason why dogs bark ... and fearfully run away from home.

Changes in Molong: In these times of long drought, this town is indeed, very lucky.

There are people opening new businesses ... with others wanting to open new businesses in town (if only there was the space).

Molong and district residents are indeed, very fortunate to live in a rural town which is growing, expanding and diversifying in these times.

New Hardware and (surprise) coming to Molong!

We’re all very happy and looking forward to the new hardware shop opening soon in the iconic Myors corner building. Yay! No more trips to Orange for paints, brushes, hardware items ... right down to a sheet of sandpaper.

Molong’s hardware shop on the corner has been greatly missed by all. We will be very happy to have it back again.

‘From the grapevine’ ... We hear a carpet floor covering shop will soon be starting up in the old Western Stores building. It looks like Molong is finding its way back to the traditional main street mix which once existed for a number of decades (and survived). Molong can now boast - Butcher (2), Baker (1 in SPAR), Candlestick Maker (well almost, Tania Lampe at Eden in Bank Street makes candles). Add, Newsagency, Pharmacy, SPAR, Mechanical works. Panel Beater, Gym, Bank, Credit Union, Beautician (1), Hairdresser (4), Servo (1), Post Office (1), Cafes (4), Pubs (2), Commercial/Sporting Clubs (2), Medical Centre (2), Hospital (1), Aged Care, Nursing Home (2), Masseur (4), Real Estate (3), ...

In these times (long drought) - Molong is looking good ... and very promising for the future.

Not many other same size rural towns are looking as positive.

Who is at risk of osteoporosis?

Women have a higher risk due to their smaller bone mass and the drop in their oestrogen levels after menopause.

Some other risk factors for both men and women are:. low dietary calcium . low vitamin D - often related to low sun exposure (e.g. people who spend most of their time indoors, dark skinned people, people who always cover most of their body). . not enough physical activity . increasing age . low body weight . family history of osteoporosis . caucasian or asian race . smoking . heavy alcohol use . some medicines (e.g. prednisolone, prednisone) . some medical conditions (e.g. some hormone disorders. rheumatoid arthritis, kidney disease) If you are over 50 and have had a bone fracture, you may be at risk of having more fractures. Ask your doctor about the cause of the fracture.

Effects of osteoporosis:

Your bones are always being rebuilt and strengthened in a process which depends on calcium, Vitamin D and some hormones (e.g. oestrogen).

As you get older, this rebuilding process slows and your bones can weaken leading to osteoporosis. People with osteoporosis have a high risk of breaking a bone during a fall. A fracture is often the first sign of osteoporosis. Fractures occur most often in the bones of the spine (vertebrae), hip, wrist, ribs and upper arm. Fractures in the bones of the spine can lead to loss of height, changes in posture and spine deformity.

Hip fractures can lead to permanent disability and loss of independence.

The best way to test for osteoporosis is to measure bone mineral density. A special x-ray called ‘dual x-ray absorptiometry’ can measure how solid (how dense) spine and hip bones are.

Self-care:

Have a healthy diet with plenty of calcium, spend time outside in the sun for vitamin D and do regular exercise to keep your bones and muscles strong. Strong bones and muscles can reduce your risk of falls and fractures. Don’t smoke, limit alcohol to no more than 2 standard drinks per day. Prevent falls.

Calcium builds and strengthens bones. The recommended daily intake of calcium for most adults is 1000mg. The recommended daily intake for women over 50 years (or past menopause) and men aged over 70 years is 1300mg. Dairy foods (e.g. milk, cheese, yoghurt) contain high amounts of calcium. Aim for three serves of low fat dairy foods every day.

Some other foods also contain calcium, but in lower amounts (e.g. canned salmon and sardines, tofu, almonds, broccoli.

Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium and keeps bones strong. It also helps keep muscles strong.Vitamin D forms in the skin when it is exposed to ultraviolet B rays from the sun. In summer, most people with fair skin need to expose their face, hands and arms (or an equal skin area) to the sun for 5-10 minutes mid-morning or mid-afternoon on most days.

In winter they will need up to 30 minutes a day around midday on most days. Dark skinned people and the elderly need more sun exposure. Some foods contain vitamin D (e.g. milk, eggs, liver, fatty fish) but usually not enough for bone health.

The study also noted that the main foods produced, such as lettuce, aren’t of great nutritional value, especially those threatened by food insecurity.

The produce is also sold at a premium price, partly reflecting the cost of the real estate on which it is grown, and mainly reaches highend stores and restaurants, putting it out of reach of those who need it most.

Although CEAs occupy only 1.6ha of the estimated 754ha thought to be available for urban food production in New York City, the researches thought that the cost of real estate would constrain expansion.

The Guardian article quoted earlier also questions the economics of small-scale urban farming.

It points out that to produce all the food that one average meateating British adult consumes in a year, requires about half a hectare of land.

Using Bristol as an example, the city covers 11,000 hectares, so even if you could farm the entire city, it would feed only 14,700 of the 534,000 residents.

Using what green space is publicly available now would feed 1,320, and just 3,300 even if they only ate grains.

However, the writer concedes that self-sufficiency in specific crops might just be possible. The real output of container farms is contested, but using conservative figures of a 38m2 container farm producing a tenth of a hectare’s worth of salad leaves a year, Bristol’s present lettuce needs (almost 7 million heads annually) could be met with about 1,000 containers, which, with no space between them, would occupy only about 3.7 ha.

The Guardian notes that conventional agricultural analysts often dismiss ideas involving small-scale, local food production, claiming that present population growth rates mean the world will need 70 per cent more food by 2050, and only large-scale intensive farmingcan achieve that.

But, the Guardian says, those figures overlook, among other things, the vast wastage in the current system, which in 2008 was estimated to be as high as 50 per cent. There could well be a role for more small-scale local production.

Giant greenhouses housing hydroponically grown vegetables are burgeoning in Australia, and new technologies will probaby see them increase in number as operating and production costs fall.

In 2016, Sundrop Farms began operation at Port Augusta in South Australia. Covering 20ha, energy is supplied by a solar/thermal plant that uses 23,000 mirrors to reflect

sunlight onto a 127m tower to generate electricity.

It produces about 17,000 tonnes of truss tomatoes a year, which are contracted to Coles supermarket chain.

The crop is irrigated using seawater pumped from Spencer Gulf and desalinated on-site using the solargenerated electricity.

The plant, which employs up to 300 people, changed hands in 2019.

Statistics from 2016 show that in that year there were about 1600 greenhouses in Australia and at that time the average size was about 0.5ha.

However there were other largescale projects on the drawing board when Sundrop was nearing completion. There were already several 30ha sites and at least two of 40ha in the planning stages.

Some analysts predict that projects such as these spell the end for open-field production.

Climate change, rising production costs and the fact that hydroponically grown crops use 25 per cent less water may see closedsystem producers dominate the industry.

But none of the systems discussed come without costs, both financial and environmental.

The study quoted in Quartz argues that many of the small scale CEAs create an environmental footprint larger than enterprises using conventional farming methods and the Guardian article shows that small farms of all types could only fill a city’s need for perhaps one vegetable line.

Large systems – such as the one at Sundrop – will only be possible if the energy inputs are at the lower end of the price scale and, perhaps even more important, there is a reliable and sustainable source of water.

The day is not far distant when an Australian Government will have to introduce a carbon levy. Like it or not, such a measure is the only effective and reliable way to reduce emissions in the energy sector.

Renewable sources, such as those from solar, wind or types of renewable energy will be necessary to offset this otherwise prohibitive expense.

In Australia, water, or the lack of it, is the elephant in the room, never mentioned when planners and developers talk of new cities joined by high-speed rail networks, and decentralisation and expansion of our regional centres. Australia is the country that vever has a drought until the next one rolls around.

Sundrop has solved this problem with a desalination plant. It has the advantage in being close to the sea, and the high-tech solar/ thermal generation plant provides the needed electricity.

Desalination also has its environmental costs. Not only is it energy hungry, the effluent from the process is highly saline and disposal or mitigation costs can be high.

Our fresh water resources are already under great strain and as our climate becomes even more erratic this strain will only increase.

Immediate action on the climate crisis and greatly increased government spending on scientific research are now crucial.

CTLX sheep and lamb report for 28/8/19

AGENTS YARDED 2840 LAMBS AND 2645 SHEEP Lamb numbers remained steady and quality was good for the better new seasons with 500 head offered. The older grades were mixed with the heavy weights showing finish, while the lighter lambs were generally plainer throughout. There were mainly trade and light lambs penned

while the heavy weights were limited in supply. Not all buyers were present and competition was weaker resulting in an easing of the market.

Light lambs to the processors averaged from $117 to $140/head. Trade weight old lambs were $8 cheaper. Heavy weight lambs were cheaper, heavy trade weight new season lambs were $10 cheaper.

Mutton numbers increased and quality was very mixed while prices were firm to cheaper throughout. Medium Merino ewes were $10 easier, heavy first cross ewes were firm to $9 cheaper. Medium weight 3 score Merino wethers sold from $148 to $177/head.

CTLX cattle market report 3/9/19

AGENTS YARDED 2469 Cattle numbers lifted and the quality still remains good. There were good numbers of cattle suitable for trade buyers and feeders were after more weight. Grown steers remain in short supply and there were some very good grown heifers that had shape and weight. Nearly 550 good quality cows were offered in a cheaper market.

Heavy vealers lost 14c, Light steers to restockers sold to 303c/kg. Feeder steers fell 20c to 25c with medium weights 260c to 310c and heavy weights 270c to 313c/ kg. Heifers to feed eased 8c, from 240c to 288c/kg. Heavy trades were back 16c and ranged from 270c to 310c/kg.

Grown steers eased 10c, grown heifers with shape and weight ranged from 285c to 309c/kg. Heavy cows were 15c to 20c cheaper and the 2 score cows were firm selling from 183c to 227c/kg, mostly to restockers. The heavy cows sold from 215c to 262c to average around 245c/ kg. The best heavy bull reached 271c/ kg.

Bowls Brag returns Oct 18 One of Molong's best social and fun events returns on Friday October 18.

Teams of 3 play, or attempt to play, around 10 ends of bowls commencing at 6 pm at the Molong Bowling Club - followed by a sausage sizzle.

Anyone and everyone is invited to enter - no experience or skill

necessary. The comp will run for about 8 weeks before returning in the new year.

After a spirited effort from Manildra at Cargo the Rhinos booked a Grand Final repeat against Trundle at Trundle to be played next Sunday 8 September.

The Rhinos task wasn't easy last weekend when they played the Grenfell Goannas.

Mick Hutchings starred in a gutsy effort with the whole team stepping up and grabbed a 3020 win.

The Rhinettes were unlucky beaten on the bell 12-6.

So now its all up to the Junior League 2019 Major Premiers who also take on the Boomers in what will be a cracker of a Sunday Rugby

League Grand Final.

In 1st Grade, Osborne's team is quietly confident as is Scott Campbell for his Youth League. Well done Woodbridge Cup AND go the Mighty Rhinos.

Little Alize Stojanov of Molong can hardly wait to get to see big brother Cody Ramsey running onto the ground in the Jersey Flegg Cup comp. with the Dragons.

Last week with her mum, Kim and Nan Shirley Lloyd (both of Molong) Alize travelled to Albion Park to watch Cody play - giving him a huge celebratory cuddle after the game (above).

This weekend the Dragons will play in the Jersey Flegg Cup finals against the Rabbitohs in Campbelltown.

MOLONG GOLF Last Wednesday 8 ladies played a 9 hole stableford with Sandi Gosling being the winner with 21 points and paring 7 of the 9 holes.

Well done Sandi.

We then all went to the bakery for lunch.

On Saturday there was a come and try Disc Golf day which was well attended and some very good beginners showed their skills.

On Monday we catered for the Vets golf day. There were 50 golfers and all enjoyed their game.

This Thursday the Manildra Golf Club are holding their Ladies Tournament, which is always a good day with a delicious lunch. So see you over there.

On Wednesday 11th we will be playing an 18 hole stroke plus putting.

They all enjoyed themselves and no balls were lost due to the intensive slashing done by Scott Oates to prepare the course for

Disc Golf. Kerry helped Scott and spent hours raking the fallen bark from the trees as well. Good job to both Kerry and Scott.

Drew was the winner of the 9 hole event on 42 off the stick.

On Monday 2 September Molong played host to Orange and District Veterans Golf.

Local winners were Scott Oates, Alan Evans and Roger Wood.

Special thanks to the Golf Club ladies for the great meal they served. These ladies worked tirelessly preparing the meal and cleaning up after. I think it's time the men dug in and helped a bit more.

Up and coming events : Sunday 8th Cumnock Open Tournament Day. Give thought to Pub vs Pub 9 hole event coming up in the near future.
