Everyone invited to Cabonne Art Prize Exhibition – free of charge

Works by some of Cabonne’s emerging and most noted artists will be on display next week when the inaugural Cabonne Acquisitive Art Prize exhibition opens in Molong.

The exhibition opens at the Molong RSL Club in Riddell Street on Saturday 14 March 2020 and runs until the following Saturday 21 March 2020.

Everyone is invited to visit the exhibition and function to announce the Art Prize winners on Thursday March 19 – free of charge.

Cabonne Council has instigated the Art Prize in the hope that it will become an annual event to foster arts in the Shire and enable the Council to acquire a collection of exceptional artworks.

The winner of the major award, the Cabonne Acquisitive Art Prize, will receive $4,250, while a People’s Choice award will be worth $1,000.

There will also be $500 for the winning high school entry and $250 for a primary school prize.

With the major prize money, the Council will purchase the winning artwork in the acquisitive section each year.

Mayor Kevin Beatty said the competition aimed to increase opportunities for participation in and place a greater emphasis on Cabonne’s arts and cultural program.

Chairperson of the Art Prize Working Party Cr Libby Oldham said the Art Prize will enable Council to acquire and exhibit quality works, which showcase the talents of artists in the Shire, as well as fostering a sense of identity, pride and place in Cabonne.

“I’m sure that when you view the exhibition, you will agree we have received a diverse entry of quality works for this first Cabonne Acquisitive Art Prize,” she said.

While the Cabonne Acquisitive Art Prize will be judged by industry professionals, everyone will have the opportunity to be a judge by casting their vote for the People’s Choice Award.

Visitors can vote for their favourite work by making a gold coin contribution at the exhibition up until the evening of the Art Prize announcements.

The exhibition will be open to the public from noon until 5pm on Saturday 14 March and Sunday 15 March, 3pm to 5pm on Monday 16 March and Tuesday 17 March and from noon to 5pm from Wednesday 18 March through to Saturday 21 March.

Sheepdog trials history

Congratulations to Cabonne author, Val. McKenzie of Cumnock who this week received copies of her much anticipated history of the ‘Molong Sheep Dog Workers Association - A History of Sheep Dog Trials at Molong 19092019’.

This event is one of the oldest continuing events in Molong. Val has spent a number of years of research, collecting stories, photos dating back to the first event in Molong in 1909.

There are a number of family members of the past and present - Bunting, Toynton, Caldwell, Evers, Bollinger, Woodhouse, Giles etc. Not forgetting the McKenzie family with Norm continuing the family tradition. There’s also stories of the Cumnock events and more...

Val’s book will be launched at the NSW Working Dog Championships at the 2020 annual event at the Rec. - Tuesday 17 - Saturday 21 March.

Children from Molong’s St.Joseph’s Primary School joined the local community last Friday at the Church of the Sacred Heart and St Lawrence O’Toole to pray for the relics of Saint Therese of Lisieux and her parents Saint Zelie and St. Louis Martin and their family.

Saint Therese, one of the most popular saints of modern times, was born in 1873 entering the Carmelite Order at 15 years of age after what she called her “complete conversion”. Her canonisation in St. Peter’s Basilica in 1925 some 28 years after her death - was attended by 60,000 people. Cyril Denney celebrates 98 birthdays

Cyril Denney (photographed right with his wife, Glenys Cherry-Denney) celebrated his 98th birthday on 3 March with an open house birthday celebration at the couple’s Molong home last weekend. A true gentleman, farmer and Christian, Cyril and Glenys have been involved in the Uniting Church for decades, providing prayers and sermons in both Molong, Manildra and further afield.

They are a well loved and caring couple within the communities and in the district where Cyril and his family lived and farmed.

“There is something really beautiful about the love and respect shown towards each other in the Denney’s Molong home” said Rozzi Smith of the Express when she called in on the day of Cyril’s 98th birthday.

“A modest white cottage with bright red shutters, the Denney’s home sits in a country garden with family photos covering most of the inside walls and furniture.

All representing Cyril’s life on ‘Myocum’ family property and their shared love of their respective families.

Resting comfortably in his favourite chair with picture windows overlooking the garden Glenys lovingly cares for Cyril as he sleeps.

A long-time family friend, Jean Bennett sits on the lounge in the sun-room waiting for Cyril to wake from his deep sleep to spend time remembering the lives they lived from childhood throughout the district’s history. Both came from early farming families/early settlers - who were amongst the first farmers, raising sheep and cattle, tending the land, growing fruits on their orchards - and the joy of living in the years where life was easy and simple - food for the table came from seasonal vegies and fruits grown in their own family soil - where entertainment involved families coming together at each other’s homes on weekends - or at church on Sundays - and in younger times at their respective schools.

Cyril Denney is a community loyal, dedicated gentleman. He was born and raised on ‘Myocum’ by his parents David and Ella, with his sisters, Norma and Joyce.

Graham Whiting (From page 1) said Cyril who spoke proudly of his mum and her skills. ‘My father saddled up a horse for me to ride to school. But I liked riding my bike.’

(There was some mention about Cyril managing to fall off the horse - perhaps one of those ‘family only’ stories judging by Cyril’s gentle smile).

What memories do you have of your life? I asked. Without a thought, the kind gentleman responded ‘I just loved farming and my family, my children (Margaret and Graham) and grandchildren. I always liked the sheep and cattle.

I had a lot of dogs (in my life) my favourite one was a black and white one.’ Cyril also remembered his first wife, Jean, who passed away some years ago. ‘Jean was a school teacher’.

Glenys added, ‘Jean and Cyril were known for their kindness and community involvement. Cyril was President of the P&C, Director of the PP Board, a life-time member of the Gumble Rural Fire Brigade, and of the United Grand Masonic Lodge, President of the Manildra Show Society, an Elder of the Uniting Church, and a foundation member of the committee which fundraised and built the UPA Centre in Bells Lane.’

As the afternoon sun faded behind the storm clouds it was time for the charming 98 year old gentleman to be returned to his bed with Glenys helping him. ‘He worries about leaving me’ said Glenys who sat back, quietly, deep in thought.

As I left the little white cottage deep in my own thoughts a special message for Cyril came to mind ‘Glenys will never be alone in Molong - the town and community will look after her - as we do.”

An employee who has retired after almost 42 years with Cabonne Council has been honoured with an award for his outstanding service.

Graham Whiting was described as a dedicated supervisor and mentor to younger staff when he received the award from Cabonne Mayor Kevin Beatty at the Council’s latest meeting.

“Graham’s knowledge and experience in road building, plan reading and calculations is second to none,” Cr Beatty said.

“Unfortunately a person with Graham’s dedication and skills may never be replaced.”

Graham started work on the patching crew with the former Molong Shire Council on 20 November 1972 at the age of 18 and after two years moved to the Molong Limestone Quarry where he held a supervisory role for about five years.

Work at the quarry was tough. There was little machinery and most of the blasted rock was broken down using hammers. It wasn’t unusual for workers to be cut regularly by flying shards of rock.

Graham left the quarry to become a grader operator before progressing to construction work.

In 1996, he became a site supervisor and in 2001 was promoted to Northern Area Overseer before becoming Construction Overseer.

“As well as being Council’s Construction Overseer, Graham also continued to managed the northern area maintenance program,” Cr Beatty said.

In addition to recalling many amusing tales about his workplace experiences, Graham paid tribute to a number of his former and present colleagues.

“When I became a supervisor and then overseer I learnt that you are only as good as the people working with you,” he said.

demographics in town and district ... Steve and his team are mindful that what has been provided before (facilities, services etc) may not suit the varied lifestyle choices (accommodation style and services) of these generations.

It is encouraging that the UPA Team, together with the architect team - are seeking the input of past and current resident’s families, residents ... and the wider community (residents of town and district, health providers etc etc).” said Rozzi.

“What is it that Molong and district residents want?” asked Steve Walkerden and the team.

“We welcome interested town and district residents to come along on March 26th to the UPA Activity Centre in Hill Street @ 7 p.m. and talk with us about their thoughts, ideas, .... and to participate in this important project”.

The Molong Probus Club will be holding its Annual General Meeting this Tuesday 10 March, 10.00am at the Molong Bowling Club.

History: Tony Lloyd remembers the 1956 Shearer’s Strike

A gentleman of the bush - Tony Lloyd of Molong holds many interesting memories of his days as a shearing contractor, sheep grazier, dairy farmer, shearer ... and the days he led his teams to distant places and through interesting times ... Tony sat with his grandson, Charles McIntosh, to report and write this story..... Read on. There’s more to come.

Having been involved in the shearing industry for most of my life as a wool classer and shed overseer, I thought I would write a bit of history re the 1956 shearers strike in Queensland. In 1956 the shearing award was reduced for shearers and shed hands.

The award was made up with a wool value allowance etc. As wool had dropped in price the Graziers Association applied to the court for a reduction in the rate of pay.

The AWU would not agree to the reduction in pay, so a strike was called against the new rate. Some employers and contractors were prepared to still pay the old rate, but most members of the Grazier’s Association would only pay the new rate. Some shearers were prepared to work at the new rate and so it led to a lot of friction between the new rate and the old rate teams.

I arrived in Cunnamulla and had to prove I hadn’t worked at the new rate. As I had previously worked for United Grazier’s shearing company in 1955, I was told that they were blacklisted and I could not work for them if I wasn’t to be called a scab. I was advised by an old friend of mine to keep out of it. The president of the Graziers Association asked me, was I going to work at the new rate, and I said, no as I didn’t want to have my legs broken, and he said, “We will win you know”, I said, “good luck to you”.

It all came to a head one night, when the new and old rate men rioted in the main street. The Cunnamulla hotel had black paint painted on the walls as the new raters were staying there.

I was at the pictures that night and at interval, I came out to see the hotel owner locking the doors and the mob were trying to climb in through the windows and intended to burn the hotel down.

The police were using their batons hitting the intruders on the head as they climbed through the window. In Victoria, years later, I met a chap who was hit by the police. A chap was locked up in the cells at the police station and was to be charged with assaulting a new rater.

A deputation went up to the police sergeant and told him to let him out as they were coming to get him out anyway if he didn’t.

He let him out. The hospital was full of men

who had been belted up, the Union men used to meet the plane and train and if they were suspected of being new raters they would be given a hiding.

The following weekend there was a race meeting and all the police from Charleville were there to help keep law and order.

There was no trouble that time. The strike lasted for 8 months, and eventually the Union won and the old rate of pay was reinstated.

Those who were working at the old rate had to pay a levy deducted from our cheque to support the men out of work. At the end of it all the conditions were that all black bans were to be lifted.

However, for some years there was still a lot of hatred towards those who were new raters and in some sheds they would not work with them.

When I left Cunnamulla (Hangman’s town they used to call it), I was issued with a pink OK card from the Union to prove that I hadn’t worked at the new rate.

The cartoon shows how bad it all was. My father sent this to me as it was in the Sydney Morning Herald.

In latter years there was a wide comb dispute and I believe it became violent also but didn’t drag on as long, so I thought this was a bit of history that may be of some interest to many people as most of those involved would have long passed on.

Molong Town Centre Have your say

Cabonne Council is seeking comments and feedback on a Molong Town Centre Issues Paper, prepared as a precursor to the preparation of the Molong Town Centre Plan.

Paul Mullins takes you through some of the issues in the paper - and throws in a few of his own to get you going.

Approaches to Molong Town Centre

Molong’s Town Centre Bank Street is mainly approached from the Mitchell Highway, northwest and south-east. The town centre can also be approached from Edward Street.

The intersection of Bank Street and the Mitchell Highway is the gateway to Molong Town Centre.

“It is time to plan for the next phase of the development of the Molong Town Centre.’

So begins one of the most ambitious planning documents the town has seen since the Local Environment Plan was issued in 2012.

Bank Street and environs is a streetscape of considerable historic and architectural significance.

Council has committed funding to develop the Molong Town Centre Plan. This plan aims to develop new ideas and urban renewal projects to make the centre more attractive to a range of stakeholders.

Following the public exhibition of the Molong Town Centre Issues Paper and consideration of issues raised, Council intends to engage an urban designer to work with interested members of the community to design meaningful / beneficial improvements as part of the development of the Molong Town Centre Plan.

Without these investments Molong’s Town Centre will continue to be challenged by other nearby centres for shopping and services, which could lead to deterioration of town centre assets and appeal.

There is no clear Way-finding material advising motorists of opportunities to stop and visit the centre at this intersection.

Driving past the intersection, motorists are presented with a brief glimpse of Bank Street, with a number of historic two-storied and single storey buildings and established street trees being visible. Urban infrastructure, such as light poles, overhead power lines and street furniture are incongruous from this view. Car and long vehicle parking appears limited from this view of Bank Street. There is limited parking for cars and long vehicles in Watson Street, but these spaces are separated / disassociated from the commercial precinct.

Town planning is placing more emphasis on centres that serve both local and visitor markets. This is particularly important in regional NSW where resident populations are relatively stable and attracting new markets is a challenge.

To grow the economy in Molong Town Centre requires consideration of the needs of existing and emerging markets as well as an emphasis on features that clearly identifies the centre and maximises its appeal.

The issues paper explores relevant issues that need to be considered: These include:

Molong Town Centre Street Layout

• Benefits from a traditional urban grid pattern which aids traffic circulation and produces focal areas and distinct character areas between street blocks.

• Bank Street is the Main-street in Molong Town Centre, and runs in an east-west direction.

• When asked where the centre of town is, most people have indicated east of the Post Office in Bank Street. This area comprises the mainstay of retail activity in town.

Tactile ground surface indicators are generally absent from intersections. The design and condition of kerb ramps can also be an issue limiting pedestrian movement throughout the centre. The alignment, grade, levels and surface condition of kerb ramps all need careful review to ensure they are suitable for all users.

Further investigation of crossing points, suitable for all users, is suggested in the Inquiry-by-Design workshops.

Street furniture

A range of styles and forms of seats, litter bins, planter boxes, bollards, and signs are found throughout the Centre. There is little consistency of appearance in street furniture and the style of most furniture is dated in appearance.

There is additional colourful table and chair sets on the street seating supplied by local cafes.

Public Art

There is a general absence of public artwork in the Molong Town Centre. There are a number of activity / character areas in the centre where the surrounding built form lacks interest or is showing signs of deterioration.

Flooding

The Town Centre of Molong is subject to flooding of the Molong Creek.

Traffic and Parking; Pedestrian Movement and Pavements To achieve safe road conditions and an inclusive centre, provision must be made for less abled and more vulnerable pedestrians (generally older residents, children or a person with a disability).

Preliminary investigation reveals limited crossing points for pedestrians to connect to both sides of the Mainstreet.

So...What are the key issues

The Issues Paper points to key issues. These are higher level matters that often need to be resolved so we can get on with the everyday nitty gritty stuff.

That is: Things like a pedestrian crossing, the double white lines, marked parking bays, street trees that don’t drop slippery drain clogging golf balls all over the place for months on end - little things like that. Often there is some over-arching issue up the line that stops the obvious from happening.

But don’t hesitate to raise them - there’s no reason why some of these these irksome little things can’t be acted on sooner.

Defining the Activity Centre Commercial facilities and services that cater to the visitor market also need to be clearly identified / signposted. This will allow visitors to access the central shopping precinct and amenities of the town. A signage plan could be developed outlining the signs required for tourist attractions, parking, public amenities and unauthorised sites if required.

Bridging the Gap

Minimising Flood Risk Part of the Molong Town Centre is affected by flooding of the Molong Creek. A number of historic factors influenced the location of Molong Town Centre, including the benefits of the railway and a water supply close to town. Major flooding has occurred in recent times in 1956, 1990 and 2005.

Until the impacts of creek and stormwater flooding are robustly addressed, there could be expected a diminished appetite for upgrades to flood affected building and spaces.

Maintaining the Built Environment A number of prominent buildings in the Molong town centre were built in the Victorian era or the interwar period. While these older style buildings provide interest and appeal in the Main-street, they also present some challenges due to their age, condition and compliance with building code and disability access matters.

Incentive funding for building restoration and access to premises are important initiatives to stimulate investment in the built form.

Stimulating Property Investment The property investment sector underpins the Molong Town Centre and is potentially one of the main drivers of change for a more active and attractive centre.

Shop proprietors can make significant improvements to their signage and internal spaces, but the property owner has control over much of the appearance of the external façade of the building.

A significant proportion of real estate in the Molong Town Centre is owned by private investors and not large corporations. Major refurbishments of existing premises are big decisions for these property owners and are largely governed by their confidence on a return on investment.

At present, decisions to upgrade premises in the Molong Town Centre appear to be largely driven by maintenance issues and tenancy requests. There are few existing premises currently undergoing major refurbishments.

The Telegraph Hotel is planning a major refurbishment, which should not only benefit hotel customers but the Main-street as a whole due to the positive visual façade improvements facing Bank Street. These types of initiatives should be supported by the wider community, as they provide leadership for other property owners to upgrade their properties. In time they should also demonstrate the benefits of extra expenditure in lifting rents and property values.

Consolidating Activity & Land-use The Molong Town Centre has historically comprised a mix of commercial and residential accommodation.

To create a successful town centre, activity needs to be contained in such a manner that opportunities for exchange are promoted, pedestrian movement is easy and a sense of conviviality is harnessed.

Molong’s Town Centre can be difficult to cross when traffic is busy, particularly for the more vulnerable pedestrians.

Molong Township is already challenged by nearby regional centres offering more variety and competitive goods and services. It is critical that Molong’s Mainstreet becomes more cohesive, and businesses both sides of Bank Street become more physically connected.

Actions that connect both sides of the Molong Town Centre for pedestrians (especially more vulnerable pedestrians) are important to the viability of the centre.

‘Walkability’ defines the commercial heart of the Town Centre, so it follows that pedestrian facilities should facilitate movement across both sides of the Mainstreet.

‘Baby Boomers’ will reach their peak by 2021 and the RV market will continue to grow as travelling tourism is a very popular retirement activity. Tapping into the RV travelling market has potential for Molong, given its close proximity to established north-south touring routes.

The burgeoning Gippsland to Queensland route via Cooma, Cowra and Molong is worthy of further exploration. RV motorists travelling between Victoria, NSW and Qld tend to choose the quieter driving routes over the Pacific and Newell Highway. Centrally located places that allow RV travellers to restock with water, dump sewage tanks and experience clean showers and toilet facilities are popular with RV travellers. Utilising appropriate communication channels, such as the CMCA website, can assist in promoting the RV facilities.

Providing the Right Support Services Choosing the right facilities to support target markets is essential to ensure that public and community investments will pay dividends.

Providing easy access to parking and pedestrian movement throughout the Town Centre is important for local community members visiting the centre on a daily / weekly basis. Providing gateways and Way-finding signage to parking areas (including long vehicle parking) as well as parklands and public toilets in the Town Centre are important for meeting expectations of new markets.

For local and visitor markets, the following projects may have merit: • Public car parks around the periphery of the Bank Street retail core.

• Disabled car parking spaces near the retail core and specific land-uses such as Council Administration Centre, Library, pharmacies etc.

• Long vehicle parking for parking of caravans, boats and longer vehicles which are otherwise difficult to accommodate. Parking spaces need to line-marked and located in areas providing easy access to the town shopping precinct and amenities.

• Amenities - clean public toilets providing for all users.

• Directional signage - both for motorists and pedestrians.

Exploring New Markets

When population and household growth are not expected to significantly increase in the medium term, the challenge for commercial centres to remain strong and viable is to look for other potential markets, innovations and / or business models.

While the strongest market for Molong’s Town Centre is the local community (town residents, nearby smaller villages and surrounding farms), there is merit in exploring opportunities to attract more visitors to Molong. Likely visitor markets are: • Weekend Visits – where residents from the surrounding region make a special trip to visit the centre to catch-up with friends and / or relatives over a coffee or meal.

• Events Tourism – where visitors are invited / encouraged to attend town events, recreational activities and festivals.

• RV Travelling Tourism – where improvements are made to encourage RV travellers to make Molong a destination / stop-over, as part of their touring holiday.

• Specific catered visitations – such as scheduled bus

John Porch - Cumnock - playing international rugby Cumnock has produced some of Rugby greats who have played as Wallabies at the International level. Some, like John Porch found further success playing and coaching in overseas countries at various size clubs.

Born in Orange on the 4 March 1994 to Kylie Worrall and Adam Porch - John commenced his school years at the Cumnock Public School until he was 6 years old. He then attended school at Nundle and after as a boarder at the Farrer Memorial High School.

The grandson of Bev and Frank Worrall of Cumnock - his proud grandparents remember him playing rugby as a 5 year old.

“In Year 6 he was picked in the North West Representative team” said his proud grandfather, Frank. “John then toured with Country early in 2010 and wads then chosen in the U16’s Country School team. In June the same year he played in the winning team in the competition played in Armidale. John was named Player of the Carnival.”

Bev Worrall remembers her grandson then playing with the NIAS (Northern Inland Academy of Sport).

“John played with the Lloyd McDermott Rugby Development Team” said Bev. “They played in Alice Springs then in Melbourne where they won the tournament with John being awarded the best full-back of the tournament.”

John Porch’s first overseas playing opportunity came in 2011 when he played in New Zealand with the Farrer First XV side.

In 2012 he represented with North West and selected in the NSW combined high school - then more success came when he was selected to play in the NSW Schoolboys Rugby 2nd XV. In the

same year John was selected in the Australian Schoolboys ‘A’ team to play Tonga. More success came for the boy from Cumnock when he was chosen in the 2012 Australian Schoolboys team to tour Fiji and NZ where the team won the Novotel Trans Tasman Shield.

Completing Year 12 -John went to Sydney in 2013 where he played with the Colts Northern Suburbs Rugby Club. Unfortunately, he sustained a severe compound fracture and had to spend 10 months of concentrated rehabilitation to recover from the injury.

But nothing was to stop the young rugby enthusiast when after rejoining the Colts he was picked by the Sydney Rays where he drew the attention of the selectors of the Australian Rugby 7’s Academy.

“We were all thrilled when John was selected to play in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio” said Frank Worrall. “John was also selected in 2018 for the Commonwealth Games and played in the Rugby 7’s for Australia touring the world until June 2019.”

Whilst playing in the World Tournament in Vancouver he was chosen for the Dream Team where 7 of the best players from the competition were chosen. John was noticed by the selectors because he was the top try scorer in the competition.

In June 2019, the Connacht Rugby Club offered John Porch a 2 year contract playing professional rugby XV’s for them.

Today, John is based in Galway, Ireland - where he is playing in two professional tournaments for Connacht ... and still seeing the world playing the game he loves” said his proud grandmother, Bev Worrall.

It was a good quality yarding with a good selection of trade lambs along with only a few pens of heavy weights. There were also fair numbers of lambs to suit the restockers. A full field of buyers were in attendance and operating.

Light weight lambs to the processors were $10 dearer with the 12kg to 18kg 2 scores selling from $130 to $175/head. Trade lambs were $2 to $5 dearer with the new season lambs selling from $181 to $248, while the trade weight old lambs sold from $175 to $255 to average between 1,015c and 1,050c/kg cwt. The few heavy weight lambs were firm selling to $272/ head. A single pen of trade weight Merino lambs were around firm selling for $185/head.

Restocker lambs were firm to $3 dearer, selling from $100 to $199/head. Hoggets sold to $240/ head.

It was a mixed quality yarding of mutton where the light and medium weight sheep were firm to $7/head dearer while the heavy weight sheep were firm to cheaper with quality a factor. Merino ewes sold from $70 to $223 while crossbred ewes sold from $95 to $250/head.

Merino wethers sold from $98 to $190, while White Dorper wethers sold to $242/head. The restocker paid $131/head for Merino wethers to fatten.

It was a good quality yarding with large numbers of young cattle to suit both the feeders and trade buyers. There was a good selection of cows, but no properly finished grown steers, and just a few grown heifers. There were good numbers of weaners mixed throughout the yarding. Extra restocker buyers were in attendance creating a very solid market.

Young cattle to the trade were up to 50c dearer, with the prime vealers making to 350c, while the prime steer yearlings sold from 340c to 417c/kg. The prime heifer yearlings sold from 340c to 402c/kg. Feeder steers were firm, while the feeder heifers were up to 30c/kg dearer.

The feeder steers sold from 324c to 423c, while the feeder heifers sold from 340c to 413c/ kg. Young cattle to the restockers were up to 50c dearer, with the young steers making from 383c to 504c, while the young restocker heifers sold from 335c to 430c/kg.

Grown heifers were cheaper on quality selling to 338c/kg. The restockers were active on the good quality grown heifers lacking condition and paid from 278c to 328c/kg. Cows were 7c to 14c dearer, with the 2 scores selling from 180c to 286c/kg. The better 3 and 4 scores sold from 270c to 310c, with the prime heavy weights averaging 302c/kg. Bulls sold to 330c/kg.

Public Comments and Submissions Invited Cabonne Council is seeking public comments and feedback on a Molong Town Centre Issues Paper that has been prepared as a precursor to the preparation of the Molong Town Centre Plan.

The aim of this paper is to explore issues that need to be considered with community members, so as to better inform the development of the Molong Town Centre Plan.

Council has committed funding to develop the plan, which aims to engage with stakeholders to develop new ideas and urban renewal projects to make the Molong Town Centre more attractive.

Following the public exhibition of the Molong Town Centre Issues Paper and community feedback has been received, Council intends to engage an urban designer to work with interested members of the community to design improvements as part of the development of the Molong Town Centre Plan.

Last Wednesday 9 ladies enjoyed a delicious lunch at the RSL after playing 9 holes of golf.

Next Wednesday 11th we will be playing an 18 hole stroke plus putting with an 8.30 start for a 9.00 o'clock tee off. ********************************* We had a group of players for nine holes on Sunday morning. All enjoyed their golf and some good shots were played.

Some players doubled up to play 18 holes after they had enjoyed a bite of lunch. However, after not playing 18 holes for sometime it took its toll on some players. The ghost walker started

out really well and kept it up throughout the game. Drew being the youngest and a big hitter played well also and kept level with the ghost walker. Both finishing up with 32 points with Drew winning on a count back after a birdie on the last hole. Chris Cook knew about his body after playing 27 holes. Hope he is walking ok this week!

Next Sunday 8 March - new format. Tee-Off 8.30 to 9.00 a.m. for 9 holes or continue on to play 18 hole Stroke after lunch. New players always welcome at the Royal Molong. Hope to see you there. Jack

Dramatic tie in Oilsplus finals cricket and Magpies gone

At the REC on Saturday last seasons grand finalists went head to head for the right to play in this seasons grand final.

Batting first Country’s openers Trent Frazer and Brett Wykes struggled against some very good bowling by Millthorpe’s openers Adam Clarke and Pat Tree. A heavy outfield also made runs difficult to come by. Evidence of the tight bowling and conditions was Country’s score of 0 for 15 from the first 13 overs! At the 20 over drinks break Country made it to 41 without loss with lots of work left to do if they were to post a competitive total. The first over after the break Country lost their first wicket when Brett Wykes went for 26.

Frazer quickly followed for 20 leaving Nigel Brazier to try and get the run rate going. A middle order collapse didn’t help their cause however 36 from Brazier managed to get them into triple figures and after 40 over the premiers posted a moderate total of 7 for 121. Millthorpe’s bowlers were exceptional Adam Clarke 0 for 11 from 10 overs, Pat Tree 0 for 13 from 8 overs led the way at the start, however Stu Redfern was the pick 3/36 assisted by Simon Badgery 2/28 & Dave Gilmore also 2/28 capped off a wonderful attacking team effort.

In reply Millthorpe got off to a good start not losing their first wicket until the score was 34. Will Oldham and Tim Low are a dangerous batting pair and were looking good until in the 12th over when a dreaded run out took the wicket of Oldham (25) when he was looking very settled. After Oldham’s wicket and two down Millthorpe seemed to go into a shell and for the next ten overs were completely dominated by bowlers Trent Frazer and Jock Haynes who both bowled 10 overs straight. At the 30 over mark Millthorpe were on the ropes at 3 for 66.

Badgery who capped off a fine game, they started to close in on the target. Despite wickets falling around him Badgery tried to get Millthorpe over the line.

Only needing 4 from the last over the match was Millthorpes. The pressure was on bowler John Mullhall, Millthorpe took a couple of singles and needing two from the final ball of the day could only get another single from the final delivery with the match ending in a tie! As Minor Premiers Country go through to the Grand Final yet again whilst Millthorpe fall agonisingly short of a Grand Final birth. Millthorpe will rue losing their way mid innings when they could have probably put the match away, however will live to fight another day in this Saturdays final.

On Sunday in the elimination semi final as predicted Canowindra were far to good for a disappointing Magpies outfit, winnings by 60 runs. Magpies decided to send the visitors in. The visitors got of to a reasonable start however wickets fell at a reasonable rate and like the previous day runs were hard to come by.

Jamie Austin (38) and Nick Traves (15) were the best batsmen for Canowindra as most of their batsmen chimed in and they managed 9 for 127 after 40 overs.

Ben Brown and Adam Osborn the best of the Magpies bowlers. In reply Magpies were a train wreck all out for 67. Season over after back to back semi final losses.

An improvement on last season’s wooden spoon but a shambles come finals time, heads will roll however Brett Johnson has vowed to give up cigarettes and coke in the off season after seven decades of smoking, time will tell.

Dylan Wilson is off to buy a new helmet as you can only drop kick your current one so many times after getting out and Gus Swammy, Ben Brown and Les Hoppa will be having catching practise in the winter months without

PREVIEW FINAL – MILLTHORPE V CANOWINDRA The winner of this match earns the right to play Country in the Grand Final. Pending weather this match is set down for the REC on Saturday 1pm. Both relatively newcomers to the Molong Competition Millthorpe in their second year and Canowindra in their maiden year.

Millthorpe came very close to winning the big one last season and will go into this match hot favourites as 2nd play 5th.

However Canowindra have gained a lot of momentum over the last few weeks of the competition and have brushed all before them. Millthorpe will need to be very careful and not take them lightly. Canowindra will rely on the double all-rounder brothers Nick and Brendan Traves and Jamie and young Sam Austin. They also boast some handy batsmen and are a fairly settled all round team. Their bowling is very good, accurate and hard to get away. There main weakness is their fielding as at times they can be sloppy and drop reasonably simple chances and can be slow in the field.

Millthorpe are strong all over the park, they have good batsmen and bowlers and are a excelelnt fielding side.

They will be looking to Will Oldham to get them off to a good start. Tim Low and James Milner will need to score much faster that last Saturday to take the pressure of their team mates. Adam Clarke and Pat tree will need to continue their opening attack form and put Canowindra under early pressure.

This is a hard one to pick, I will go with Millthorpe as they have been the more consistent of the two sides but there is nothing in it.
