New approach to Village Enhancement funding

Over 15 years ago the then Cabonne Council established a "Village Enhancement Program" , backed up with some $4m in funds reserved to beautify and add minor infrastructure improvements to our towns.

Things like new park facilities, seating, the hedged rose gardens in Molong's Bank Street, started to spring up in Cabonne.

It could take a little time with consulting - and getting agreement on what improvements were worthwhile took longer.

The Village Enhancement Fund is still around. But Council has decided to promote a sense of community support and ownership and provide annual funding to Council’s peak community organisations (organisations recognised at the beginning of each Council's term when appointing council committees and delegates).

Peak community organisations will have an annual budget allocation which will allow them to develop village community plans and project priorities. Funds will be available by application to council.

The funds may be used on council assets or for public good, supported by the local communities concerned.

The allocations will be made and apportioned based on

Molong's Covid-19 positive sewerage where to from here?

Where is it coming from? Twice now and just over a few weeks, Molong's sewerage testing regime has come up positive with some kind of a 'fragment' of the Covid virus.

That's bad news enough for our community - given the recent national publicity molong has been receiving.

Not every area of town is connected to rateable properties identified in sewerage, and there are no reported new the relevant peak community Covid cases in town. organisations area.

Unspent funds may be retained in reserve for use by the relevant community over more than one financial year.

The positive tests on the sewerage were days apart.

So townspeople are left wondering whether it might be travellers using the towns public toilets or the RV dump facilities.

Vaccinations update

NSW Health has advised that, to support Year 12 students returning to face-to-face learning for their HSC, NSW Health is redirecting Pfizer vaccines from across the state.

As part of its pandemic response, NSW Health is taking this important temporary measure to also give us the best chance of containing the current outbreak in Greater Sydney as quickly as possible.

As a result, people in other regions could receive a notice advising their first dose of Pfizer will be rescheduled.

Anyone who has had their first dose already or those in priority groups 1a or 1b will not have their bookings rescheduled.

GPs continue to supply Pfizer vaccinations in regional NSW, and their supplies from the Federal Government are unaffected by this reallocation.

AstraZeneca also remains available from GPs, NSW Health clinics and a growing number of pharmacies.

The NSW Government has asked the Federal Government to facilitate more pharmacies in regional and rural areas delivering

the COVID-19 vaccines.

Public health advice, based on the latest information from the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI), now recommends that all individuals aged 18 years and over in NSW, including adults under 60 years of age, should consider getting vaccinated with any available vaccine, including COVID-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca.

NSW Health has also authorised pharmacists to offer AstraZeneca vaccination to anyone aged 18 years or over without precautions or contraindications who has had the opportunity for a discussion in relation to the risks and benefits of vaccination, and has provided fully informed consent.

For nearly four years I have had the honour of serving as Mayor of Cabonne. In this time, I have had the opportunity to see the best of the Cabonne community – during periods of drought, flood, and fires. Yet over this last week – when Cabonne faced the very real threat of a COVID-19 case in our region - I saw this community once again rise to the occasion.

First, and foremost, our Cabonne residents adhered to the strict lockdown rules.

Immediately around town you could observe people wearing masks, socially distancing, and using the QR check-ins.

Almost straight away, our local businesses adjusted to a “new normal” – either by closing and sending workers home, or by transitioning their services in-line with the rules.

During Stay-At-Home orders in other places (particularly in the cities), we have seen images of supermarket chaos as people madly strip shelves of toilet paper, and other essential items. Not in Cabonne!

Even at the outer reaches of Cabonne – in Yeoval, Cumnock, Eugowra, Canowindra, Mullion Creek – our communities made sure they limited their travel. This has not only helped to protect our Cabonne community, but has also ensured the nine other LGA’s that border Cabonne have had minimal impact from our COVID lockdown.

I know for some this has come at great cost.

Not taking livestock to Dubbo for sales, not commuting to Cowra for work, not travelling to Forbes for groceries, and not going to Wellington for appointments.

But the response is evident. We have not had a single new case of COVID-19 across our region! Zero! (at the time of printing) This is not only as a direct result of our community following the Stay-At-Home orders, but also as a direct result of people getting tested. Since Stay-At-Home orders were put in place, more than 10,600 COVID-19 tests have been performed in the Orange, Blayney and Cabonne local government areas.

This represents almost 17 per cent of the population.

I want to really thank the community right across Cabonne for doing the right thing.

Thank you for minimising the spread, and following the rules and keeping our Cabonne community safe.

I heard stories of poor behaviour at other testing sites in the region, but not at Molong.

Thank you for treating the COVID-19 testers with respect and kindness.

I want to give special acknowledgement to the businesses.

Thank you to the food businesses who stayed open to provide essential services to the residents across Cabonne.

Thank you to SPAR for keeping shelves stocked, and providing delivery services. Thank you to the Rapid Response Team who volunteer their time to deliver groceries and provide other support services. To the RSL, Freemasons, Barnsey’s, Sweetness, Wildflower, Lime and Stone, Hunky Chunky Pies, and any other venues I have missed, thank you for providing takeaway options. To all the cafés across all our Villages in Cabonne who adjusted to ensure we could still get our morning coffees and lunchtime pies.

So many of these businesses have commented on how supportive the community has been to them over the last couple of days.

But I also want to acknowledge and thank the businesses that have been forced to close, and will go without (at least) a week’s income.

Thank you for doing the right thing by our community. This has been a particularly tough week for businesses, but I know that our community will do what they can to support you.

I encourage all residents to do what they can to shop locally and support our amazing Cabonne businesses. They need our support more than ever!

Finally, I want to thank the NSW Health COVID-19 testers, and the Cabonne Council road traffic management team, who have stood out in the freezing and wet weather to help keep us all safe! Thank you! I know that our entire community shares these sentiments.

Admittedly, as we potentially come to the end of this strict COVID lockdown period, there is some COVID fatigue creeping in. I, like so many of you, am frankly over the mask wearing, COVID updates and following all the rules. But we must continue to remember how dangerous this virus is. Our communities are exceptionally vulnerable to this disease, and the risk of not doing what is right now could have a devastating effect on the people we love most.

Cabonne – please stick at it! Continue to get tested, wear a mask, socially distance, minimise movements, get vaccinated, and QR check-in.

This past week I have never been prouder or more grateful for this community, and I know that together we can get through this!

One week until Census night

With only one week to go before Census night on Tuesday 10 August, the Australian Bureau of Statistics is reminding people that they can complete their Census as soon as they receive their instructions.

Andrew Henderson, Census Executive Director and National Spokesperson said, “This means you don’t have to wait to complete your form on Census night.

We know people expect flexibility and convenience, so this makes it easier for people to fill in their Census when it best suits them.

“Households across the country have started receiving Census letters with instructions on how to complete their Census online, or how to order a paper form.

“In some areas, households will receive a paper form and we’ll supply a reply-paid envelope for its return.

“If you are yet to receive your Census instructions, or would like to complete a separate Census form to the rest of your household, you can get a Census number or request a paper form on the Census website.

“We want to make sure everyone is included in the Census, so we have provided a range of help and support options to assist people in completing the form, including on the Census website and over the phone.

We also have braille forms, audio instructions, video guides with closed captions, and translation services available,” Mr Henderson said.

Census data is a snapshot of who we are and how we are changing. It’s used to inform important decisions about social and economic services for individuals, families and communities.

If you won’t be home on Census night, it’s important that you visit the Census website to report that the home will be vacant. You need to indicate whether the residents are

staying elsewhere or travelling.

How will people complete their Census?

People will be able to complete the Census online, on their mobile device or on paper.

A number of options will be available for people who need assistance to complete their Census form including help from Census staff, and phone and online help.

Census staff will be in remote communities to help people complete the Census during July and August.

What is new with the Census?

People can complete their Census as soon as they receive their instructions if they know where they’ll be on 10 August.

They don’t have to wait until Census night.

There are two new questions in the 2021 Census—the first changes to questions collected since 2006. The new questions are on long-term health conditions, such as arthritis and diabetes, and on defence force participation.

Conducting the Census in a COVID environment We expect most people will complete their Census online with no in-person contact from us. More information on conducting the Census in a COVID-19 environment is available at Keeping the community safe during COVID-19.

How do people know if the Census instructions are legitimate?

Census instructions will feature the official Australian Bureau of Statistics logo and the 2021 Census branding.

Come the year 2021 in rural australia and we are saying “nope! We have had enough”. Yet our PM and all sides of federal government are still stuck somewhere back in time when we listened to the hope that our leaders encouraged us to live by. Yes, it did ... Australia was on a roll!

And we’ve had enough”.

Particularly in these times when decades of the ever-growing media power bases and journalists keen on winning a ‘Walkley Award’ (not forgetting a pay rise) ... Have sunk to the lowest level of all time. What are they saying? What are they doing? What do they hope to achieve.

What we need in rural australia to survive, PM is money ... Positive planning and some kind of acknowledgement that you and your pollies - understand that we are tired, we have faced many challenges, we rely on government programs and investment to now include ‘how to survive covid”. Like the vaccines slow arrival (too late?)

Small country towns like Molong ... need your better understanding. It’s not hard ... 1) We need money e.g. pensions, we don’t need jobkeeper and jobseeker or business grants. Whilst helpful, we know the big boys get a lot more than we battlers in the bush.

Yes, we are the little boys, the little women ... The little schools, the little towns and villages. There are many examples of the demise of traditional rural towns, villages, businesses, jobs ....

Loss after loss.

We’re used to it.

Successive governments fail us every election.

Marketing, promises, encouragement.

Yes we have raised our heads and worked for the greater good of Australia. Problem is ... There has not been anything workable, needed, for the little battler.

Yet, you and your own party, the labor party, etc etc. Year in - year out - feed our dreams, imagination, and then let us down. Why? Because none of you (except Andrew Gee?) has really known us. We are the people of rural nsw, the Aussie battlers.

The overseas evidence clearly shows that if we had the same experience of other advanced economy countries, where their Covid death rate has been almost 40 times greater than in Australia, more than 30,000 additional Australians would have died. Together, we stopped this.

And, despite setbacks from recent lockdowns, more than one million Australians were able to get themselves back into work after last year’s Covid recession, as our unemployment rate fell to 4.9 per cent. Now we have to finish the job and get Australians vaccinated.

Because that is our path back.

As Prime Minister, I take responsibility for the early setbacks in our vaccination program.

Letters The Climate Change Debate RE: 15th July story “Farmers need support, not dress-ups, to reap benefits of climate action.”

You published my letter (in your 22nd July edition) written in response to calls from Farmers for Climate Action CEO, Fiona Davis, to the new leader of The Nationals. She called for The Nationals, which claim to represent regional Australia and farmers, to put aside party differences and urgently back a transition to a low carbon economy (reported in your 15th July edition).

In that letter I stated that perhaps The Nationals MPs were representing their constituency by not backing the transition to a low carbon economy.

My thinking is that there is a proportion of the community who are not convinced by the arguments for the transition to the low carbon economy.

My point was that these people should be represented. It doesn’t matter what the issue is, there will always be a range of opinions on it. For a serious contest of ideas in rational debate, each opinion must be respected. The quote attributed to Voltaire is appropriate, “I disapprove of what you say, but will defend to death your right to say it.”

You published (in your 29th July edition) the strong and capable arguments from both Rob Lee and Cameron Wild advocating for the transition to a low carbon economy. My point is that those people who remain unconvinced by such competent arguments have a right to representation in our parliamentary democracy.

They also have a right to be heard on our national broadcaster (so generously funded by the entire community of Australia).

PM takes responsibility

Still no Commbank ATM The molong Branch of the Commonwealth Bank closed on 5 June.

The ATM was removed, the damage to the wall was fixed and the area was painted by Sunday 7 June - less than two days.

The bank said they would replace the ATM. Yet try as I might I cannot see a sign or a new ATM for Commonwealth Bank customers.

I have not seen a skerric of news in the papers, on TV or anywhere.

I'm wondering whether our erstwhile politicians (Mr Donato, Mr Gee, Mr Beatty) have thrown in the towel.

And so, the Commonwealth Bank wins. At least, gentlemen, give us the news. I notice the ads on TV that say Commbank Can! It's pretty obvious in molong and Blayney Commbank cannot, will not and does not give a tinkers cuss about any of us.

UFO over Manildra My name is Paul Jones, and I lived in Manildra during the 60s. I am looking for anyone else in the district who can remember a UFO sighting on the night of 5 March 1965. Apparently it was seen by many people all over NSW. I remember it being a crystal clear night and a group of us were standing outside the then Baptist Church in Edward St, when one of the group saw a bight light coming from a westerly direction. It made no sound at all. Then to our surprise it stopped and divided into numerous lights and formed an arrow head formation. It then moved off again toward the East.

Does anyone recall this event? I would like to hear their description of what they saw. It was a lot of years ago and my memory could be better.

I don’t know if you would be interested in putting this question in the Molong Express.

(Continued from page 4) I also take responsibility for getting them fixed and that we are now matching world-best rates, with more than 1 million doses every week. The supplies are in place, the GPs, pharmacists and state clinics are getting the job done.

To keep us focusing forward, I have been able to secure the support of our premiers and chief ministers around the country for our national four-step plan to bring this home.

This plan now has clear vaccination targets to drive us on.

Right now we are in the suppression phase, where the only way to stay ahead of the new Delta strain is to have quick and short lockdowns.

I wish this was different, but the Delta strain is far more infectious. The science of the Delta strain is the game changer and you can’t ignore it. The tools of testing and contact tracing are no longer enough to enable us to weather limited cases in the community.

We now need 70 per cent of our population aged over 16 to get vaccinated to move to the next phase where we can start saying goodbye to lockdowns. When we hit 80 per cent, lockdowns should become a thing of the past.

I can say this because I asked one of the world’s best pandemic expert scientific organisations – the Doherty Institute in Melbourne – to tell us at what rate of vaccination we can now safely take these steps, and not see it all fall over again and run out of control as we have seen in other countries that have tried.

I also asked our economic experts the same question, about

the lockdowns and the cost of restrictions. And they agreed with the medical experts. With this new Delta strain, until we get to 70 per cent, you have to lock down for quick short periods, as this avoids longer lockdowns, where the cost is far greater.

The idea that you can just let this rip and ignore it is not an option. It is fanciful, foolish and dangerous.

To get us through these lockdowns, the federal government is providing timely and direct financial support to individuals and businesses. Through our Covid Disaster Payment, we have already directly helped 774,465 Australians in NSW, Victoria and South Australia with payments totalling $994.5m. This support will now extend to southeast Queensland.

So, 70 per cent is our next mark to get to Phase B and 80 per cent for Phase C. Like you, I wish it were lower. But it’s not. It’s what the detailed scientific analysis of the virus tells us. The science of Covid-19 writes these rules, not us, so we just have to adjust and beat it. If the virus changes again we’ll have to do the same.

If we all work together we can get this done, including getting to the next step before the end of the year. But it is up to all of us. There will be enough supplies. There will be enough GPs, pharmacists and nurses to deliver the jabs. All we now need is you.

So, our gold medal run to the end of year is now well under way. Our Olympians in Tokyo have given us the perfect inspiration to get this done. It’s now up to us.

Molong Juniors celebrate great Rep. season

Molong 11’s Rep Hockey

What a great season the 11’s representative boys and girls had in 2021.

The first trip for the girls and Brayden Walker was to Moorebank to play in the Moorebank-Liverpool District Hockey Club carnival on the

9th May. The Molong team were announced winners of Division 2, winning four games and drawing one. The format for the day was, full field, 11 on the field. For some of the team, this is their first year playing on the big pitch. The experienced gained from playing other teams from over Sydney was invaluable for the team.

Forth row – Annie, Olivia, Milly, Indy, Phoebe, Abby, Layne Third row – Frankie, Charlotte, Josie, Zoe, Ella, Second rom – Lacey MHC would like to thank all families for First row – Brayden their continued support throughout the representative season. Getting to training and carnivals is a big ask but very rewarding, especially when you see those smiling faces.

Rural Roulette: NSW Government diverts vaccines from the bush

Rural doctors are outraged that the NSW Premier, Gladys Berejiklian has announced that Pfizer vaccines are being redirected from rural communities to metro school students.

Dr John Hall, President of the Rural Doctors Association of Australia (RDAA) said that it would leave rural communities to play catch up in case of a local outbreak.

“Most rural communities have already been waiting months for access to the Pfizer vaccine, with many vulnerable patients, health workers and other Priority 1A people still waiting for their first dose,” Dr Hall said.

“These are the very same people who will be at risk or called upon to provide care if there is an outbreak in a rural community.

“To have their supply of Pfizer vaccines snatched from them so it can be made available to school students in Sydney is simply unacceptable.

“It only takes one drive into the country to take Sydney out into the bush and we have already seen how the movement of essential workers has put rural people at risk.

“We need to be proactive and preventative when planning the distribution of vaccines. Every time it is removed from a rural area, another community is left vulnerable,” Dr Hall

said.

The Pfizer vaccine administration was limited to State Government facilitated Vaccine Hubs in regional centres and it has only started trickling into GP practices, in very small amounts, over the past couple of weeks. Rural people have had significantly poorer access to Pfizer than their city counterparts, with their only option often to travel many hours to access a Vaccine Hub. Not all have been able to do this.

“Rural hospitals and medical centres already have a more limited surge capacity in case of an outbreak, simply due to the smaller number of health workers in the regions,” Dr Hall said.

“The Pfizer vaccine is essential to protecting the very people who will protect us in case of an outbreak. Other members of the public have also been waiting months for vaccines to arrive in their local area.

“To have them snatched away at the eleventh hour is outrageous.

“Remote learning is hard, but it is an option. Protecting entire communities from COVID should be prioritised over ensuring year 12 students can sit their exams.

“We call on the NSW Government to rethink this strategy and remember that rural people need protecting too.”

Repeat Offender Banned From Fishing for 5 years

Two men, a 49-year-old and a 58-yearold, were sentenced in Dubbo Local Court on Friday 2 July 2021.

The two men were apprehended on Saturday 27 June 2020 on the Macquarie River, downstream of Warren NSW following a covert surveillance operation involving NSW DPI Fisheries officers and NSW Police Rural Crime Unit officers.

Director for Fisheries compliance, Dr Andrew Moriarty said that seven fish traps, nine Golden Perch, a Murray Cod, a grapnel and a boat, motor and trailer were seized during the operation from the men.

“Both men faced Court on charges under the Fisheries Management Act 1994 for unlawfully using traps, possessing fish illegally taken as well as using excess and unattended lines,” said Dr Moriarty.

“The 49-year-old Dubbo man was ordered to pay $3300 in fines and costs and issued two 7-month terms of imprisonment to be served by way of intensive correction order.

“He was also given a Prohibition Order preventing him from fishing in NSW inland waters west of the Great Dividing Range for a period of 5 years.

“The prohibition order also prohibits the man being in possession of any rigged hand lines, being in possession of specified inland fish species, being in possession of

nets or traps and being on board any boat that has fishing gear or being used to carry out any fishing activities in inland waters over the five-year period.

“The 58-year-old Wongarbon man was ordered to pay $4900 in fines and costs.”

Dr Moriarty advised that this sort of behaviour will not be tolerated, and Fisheries Officers will continue to crack down on illegal fishing activity.

“The blatant disregard for fisheries rules and regulations has serious consequences especially if you are a repeat offender. Not being able to fish for 5 years is a significant impost for anyone that likes to fish, plus there's the added deterrent of hefty penalties if these individuals are found breaching the prohibition order.

The maximum penalty for breaching a prohibition order is $22,000 and/or 12 months' imprisonment.

“Fisheries rules and regulations are in place to protect and conserve fish stocks and fishing opportunities for current and future generations, and this type of illegal fishing detracts from all the hard work fisheries officers, and the community do to ensure access to healthy fish stocks for the community of NSW”

Olympic backflip missing twist with pike

The partial backflip today by the New South Wales Government to reintroduce 1000 permanent signs to warn drivers about mobile speed cameras is an admission that warning signs work to change driver behaviour and make our roads safer.

While we welcome the use of these general, fixed warning signs, NSW Labor is now calling on the NSW Government to complete the flip and put an end to the secret cameras and blatant cash grab by returning the use of portable mobile camera warning signs ahead of speed camera vehicles on NSW roads.

The NSW Government made the decision to remove warning signs from November 2020. Since January 2021, the NSW Government has collected $20.2 million in revenue for speeding fines less than 10km/h.

And new data release by Revenue NSW shows May 2021 was the highest month on record with motorists slugged $4 million worth of fines for low range speeding offences of less than 10km per hour.

“We all want to see drivers slow down and our roads safer. But the data is showing clearly that warning signs work to change driver behaviour and the fact the Government is now putting signs back up is proof of this,” NSW Labor Leader Chris Minns said.

“It’s time for the NSW Government to go the full hog and put warning signs ahead of mobile speed cameras back on our roads.”

Shadow Minister for Roads, John Graham said this decision shows the NSW Government got it wrong when they removed warning signs.

Farmers can now apply for mouse bait rebates

NSW Farmers is encouraging farmers to apply now for mouse bait rebates of up to $10,000 per farm business through the Rural Assistance Authority website.

Applications for the rebate opened today with a total of $95 million available to assist farmers with the costs of Zinc Phosphide baiting programs.

NSW Farmers Vice President and Liverpool Plains farmer Xavier Martin said claims can be made retrospectively for bait costs incurred back to 1 February 2021.

“Like many farmers across the state, our family has spent a small fortune on zinc phosphide baits to combat the mouse plague,” Mr Martin said.

“The good news is that applications are now finally open for the State Government’s Zinc Phosphide baiting program and I would encourage farmers to get in early to secure the rebate.”

“This is an opportunity to prepare for Spring when mice populations are predicted to swell.”

“NSW Farmers thanks the NSW Government for this practical support measure. NSW Farmers advocated tirelessly for this financial support over many months, resulting in $150 million worth of mouse plague support packages announced by the NSW Government.”

“This support recognises the immense impact this plague has had on so many farm businesses already. I have heard some really horrendous stories about the impact of this mouse plague and the costs involved in trying to save crops and fodder has been significant.”

Mr Martin said the situation is ongoing and will require constant monitoring and flexibility in support measures for what could become the worst mouse plague NSW has seen.

“We look forward to working with government on behalf of our members and regional communities to hopefully ensure this plague is well under control before spring,” Mr Martin concluded.

IN THE HEART of the City of Orange is the modern mill of MACQUARIE WORSTEDS LTD, the second largest employer of labour in the area and another proof of the efficiency of Australian production away from the great cities.

The Company has another mill at Albury and when these plants were set up in 1925 the Company (then being known as Amalgamated Tex­ tiles Ltd. ), the policy of the original director was to decentralise the industry and provide employment in country areas so that future genera ­tions would not have to go to the great cities to obtain work.

These directors chose Orange as one of the State's most important rural industrial centres.

So successful have been the operations of this Company, partly because of it’s decentrali ­sation, that it has now moved its head office to Orange, to incorporate production and adminis­tration under one roof.

While Macquarie Worsteds have provided the plant, the people of Orange and Albury have pro ­vided the skills which have enabled the finished products not merely to hold their own, but to lead on Australiawide markets.

Many of the finest Australian cloths used in men's suits, trousers,

shirts and sports coats, and in ladies skirts, are being made in the Orange Mill of Macquarie Worsteds Ltd. Today, most of the nationally known manu ­ facturers of men's clothing are using Macquarie cloths.

They include "Coolangatta FliteWeight'', a popular lightweight suiting and trouser material used by many leading manufacurers and tailors. Hard-wearing warp twills and venetians for countryman and city dweller alike are suppli ed to the makers of "Country Squire" and "Regalsheen. Sports trousers, and crease-resistant wool with terylene blends are produced for the makers of "Merilene" trousers and "Happy Garments" skirts. Census question to support veterans

Have you ever served in the Australian Defence Force?

One week from today, Australians will for the first time be answering this question as part of the 2021 Census.

Minister for Veterans’ Affairs and Defence Personnel Andrew Gee said the information will be invaluable in ensuring essential services are provided where veterans and their families need them most.

“Presently we do not have comprehensive demographic information about our veteran community, including simply knowing the number of veterans living in Australia today,” Minister Gee said.

“The Australian Government supports 240,231 veterans and 97,245 family members and dependents, but it is estimated there could be as many as 630,000 veterans in Australia.

“The 2021 Census will provide us with a much clearer picture of how many veterans there are and the areas they live in, which will allow the Department of Veterans’ Affairs and ex-service organisations

to target key support services in the places where they’re needed most.”

The question will ask Australians to respond ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ for whether they have current or previous service in the Australian Defence Force Regular Service or in the Reserve Service.

“I encourage all our serving personnel and veterans to answer the “have you ever served in the ADF?” question in the upcoming Census, to help improve service delivery and ensure veterans and their families receive the best support possible,” Minister Gee said.

“Some of my key priorities as Minister for Veterans’ Affairs include making claims processing more efficient, cutting through the red tape, the adoption of new medical treatments, increasing support for veterans transitioning out of the military and providing mental health support services.

“The data we collect will mean these priorities can be tackled and targeted more effectively.”

Molong Probus Club At our July meeting we had one of our own members Brigitte Eden speak to us on Nutrition and Health, which she has done some study on.

Brigitte spoke on the pros and cons of dieting, and how it is often advisable to get professional help. She also made up a pack filled with lots of information regarding nutrition for every member.

Unfortunately we had to cancel our concert for August and instead we will play some bowls, croquet and indoor games. So if anyone has any

board games that they think would be suitable for our members to play please bring them along.

After we have played a few games we will share some time a having lunch of soup and slice.

Grazing 4 Drought Drought is an all too familiar feature of our lives with devastating impacts on our communities and the farmland that supports us. As the climate changes as a result of global warming, droughts are becoming even hotter and drier. It has never been more critical to expand our understanding of ecological function and land management practices that build our ability to cope with drought. One such practice is Adaptive Planned Grazing.

Watershed Landcare (in collaboration with Central Tablelands Landcare) has a new project to introduce Adaptive Planned Grazing to more landholders in our region. We are inviting local farmers who manage livestock to join us for a free one-day workshop where experienced hosts and trainers will share an introduction to Adaptive Planned Grazing in a casual farm setting. We have scheduled 4 workshops in different locations with different hosts and trainers.

Come to a workshop close to you, share your experience of drought, and meet people who are already doing Adaptive Planned Grazing. See for yourself the results and hear from experienced managers about how it can help you manage drought.

Our expert trainers come from the two organizations involved in Adaptive Planned Grazing: RCS (Resource Consulting Services) and HM (Holistic Management). Both organizations are offering reduced rates for grazing training to workshop participants. At the workshop, you will be provided support to set up a ‘safe to fail’ trial of Adaptive Planned Grazing on your property, with access to trainers and mentors to help you.

You will also be offered access to discounted training from the organization of your choice.

As a result, you will have the opportunity to see first-hand how it can work for you and your landscape, guided by experienced mentors. You can become a valued member of a community of landholders at all different stages of learning and explore the potential of this proven management strategy.

But what is Adaptive Planned Grazing? (APG) APG is a transformational practice proven to increase drought resilience and is a key regenerative agriculture strategy. It is an approach to grazing that involves precise control of livestock density and the duration of grazing, usually 1-3 days per paddock. APG empowers landholders and emphasizes the value of goalsetting, adaptivity and decision making based on fundamental principles.

The practice of APG typically involves consolidating stock into one or a small number of mobs and rotating them through numerous small paddocks. You make a grazing plan and learn how to assess the feed ahead of your stock in the rotation. As a result, you can see in advance whether you have enough feed or whether you need to reduce stock numbers.

Each paddock is grazed intensively for a short time then is given enough recovery before the next grazing. As well as improving the paddock, this practice also improves stock health. You will have the tools to adapt to conditions based on observations and monitoring continuously. This management system is flexible enough to adapt to constantly changing conditions. For example, it can aid foresight: destocking before it’s too late or calculating how much feed you have available.

With the right strategies and skills, we can avoid these startling scenes and improve our landscapes over time instead of degrading them.

My name is Roger Austin, former resident of Molong (about 55 years ago) I read in the Express of the passing of John Clyde.

John and I went to Molong Central School together from, as far as I can remember, from early 1950 till 1964-5.

During this time we shared the usual kids things of the time - riding billy carts up and down the hill between Edward St and Phillip St (all dirt roads at the time).

John was a good friend as were Don McKenzie, Robert Adams, Jeanette Smith, Rita Smith, Ruth Whiting. And others I can’t remember.

I remember John had an elder sister Pat and a younger brother Rodney.

I really don’t know why reading of John’s passing has prompted me to offer my sincere condolences to johns family.

It may be that we forget so easily.

There were also some good runs of well finished grown steers and heifers and there were 120 cows yarded. There were limited numbers of young cattle suitable for the restockers. Most of the usual buyers were in attendance and operating.

Young cattle to the trade were firm with prime vealers selling to 550c/kg. Prime steer yearlings sold from 433c to 510c while the prime heifer yearlings sold from 420c to 504c/kg. Light weight feeder steers were a little cheaper, whilst the heavier feeder steers and heifers were up to 15c/kg dearer. Feeder steers sold from 447c to 556c while the feeder heifers sold from 466c to 541c/kg. Young cattle to the restockers remain strong with the young steers selling to 629c and the young heifers to 568c/kg.

Grown steers and heifers were firm, with the steers selling from 417c to 455c and the prime grown heifers selling from 400c to 460c/kg.

Cows were 4c dearer with the score 2 and 3 cows selling from 288c to 350c/kg. Prime heavy weight cows sold from 360c to 399c to average 387c/kg. Bulls sold to 310c/kg.

CTLX SHEEP 28 JULY It was a mixed yarding with a pretty good selection of trade lambs along with fair numbers of heavy weights, although the heavy weight lambs were not to the standard of previous sales. A number of the lambs are really starting to show the effects of the cold conditions. There were a few lines of Merino lambs which were mostly lighter lambs suitable for the restockers and a few pens of new season lambs. A full field of buyers were in attendance and operating in a very strong market.

Trade lambs were $10 to $16 dearer selling from $166 to $264/head to average between 950c and 1,060c/kg cwt. The few trade weight new season lambs sold from $210 to $250/ head. Heavy weight lambs were $18 to $24 dearer with the lambs over 24kg selling from $246 to $285/head to average between 940c and 985c/kg cwt. Merino lambs were $10 dearer with the few trade weights selling from $160 to $210/head. Lambs to the restockers were also dearer with the young new season lambs selling from $134 to $185 while young unshorn Merino wether lambs sold to the restockers from $110 to $155/head. Hoggets sold to $210/head.

It was a mostly good quality yarding of mutton which were mostly firm to $5/head dearer.

Merino ewes sold from $110 to $215 while crossbred ewes sold from $132 to $218/head.

Merino wethers sold from $152 to $200/head.

Molong Golf Sunday Mixed

Sunday golf at Royal Molong saw thirteen players on a reasonably pleasant morning play twelve holes.

The winner was Bell with Quinney coming second beating the Ghost Walker on a count back.

Balley was still in holiday mode and turned up a half hour late but luckily had a golf cart and raced through the first couple of holes to catch up. He had an up and down round with a few pars and hitting a brand new ball into the dam.

Darren didn’t want a mention in this weeks golf notes so I won’t say how well he played or didn’t play the eighth hole or what comment Bro directed toward him. But, I can’t help myself as Darren made par on the fifth hole and then was so excited he left his putter behind and of course couldn’t find it when

going to putt on the next hole.

Bruno had a game of golf with us and described his game as a lot of riding in the golf cart broken up by disappointment and bad arithmetic while Quinney reckons just playing golf with Bruno is a handicap. Al Evans said it’s more satisfying to be a bad player at golf because the worse you play the better you remember the occasional good shot.

There are a couple of events at Royal Molong golf course this month with the veteran golfers again have a tournament here on Monday 16th and the Molong Open tournament on Sunday 29th.

Thanks to Stubba for cooking the bbq and Cookie for once again cleaning up.
