A record 176 finalists have been announced for the 2018 Cabonne Daroo Business Awards, which showcase the quality and diversity of businesses based in Cabonne Shire.

Awards chairman Bruce Buchanan, said the Daroos had become the template for similar events in smaller regional areas.

Better Regions Fund, Round 3 — $200m available for distribution Molong Markets “thousands not hundreds”

Communities in Calare are invited to apply for a share in $200 million under Round 3 of the Australian Government’s Building Better Regions Fund.

Federal Member for Calare, Andrew Gee said the projects delivered under Round 3 will ensure regional and remote communities continue to thrive.

“We have had fantastic outcomes over the first two funding rounds of the Building Better Regions Fund, including $10 million for the second racetrack at Mount Panorama, $1.9 million for upgrades at Blayney’s Centrepoint Sports and Leisure Centre, $6.95 million to expand Mudgee’s Glen Willow Regional Sporting Complex and $580,000 for a domestic violence crisis centre in Orange,” Mr Gee said.

“In this third round the Federal Government will invest a further $200 million – a clear indication of the Government’s commitment to investing in projects that create jobs, build

regional economies and ensure strong and resilient regional communities into the future.”

Mr Gee is urging communities in the region to take advantage of the fund and get local infrastructure and community-building projects of all sizes off the ground.

“This fund is dedicated to unlocking the economic potential in remote and regional Australia and I encourage all eligible organisations with a great project idea to apply for the third round of funding,” Mr Gee added.

“Our region has already benefited from rounds one and two of the Building Better Regions Fund with $19.5 million already invested through seven projects - driving economic growth in Calare and delivering lasting benefits to our local communities.”

Be alert – it’s snake and spider season!

How great they were On behalf of us all at Molong Advancement Group we would like to thank everyone who supported Molong Village Markets on Monday, stallholders, helpers and most of all those who came down to ‘The Rec.’ to enjoy the huge array of goods and services on display.

We had quite a few anxious moments over the last few days leading up to the event, but the end result proved them to have been unfounded!!!

A big thank you must go the Cabonne Council staff who worked so hard to complete the new irrigation system in time to have the oval ready for us to hold our Markets.

Since moving to ‘The Rec.’ the Markets have exceeded our expectations every time and as organisers, we are encouraged by the large number of travellers who

are attracted to stop in and support our town because of the Markets.

Some stallholders are travelling long distances to attend our Markets, many of them requiring overnight accommodation thus supporting local businesses.

The amazing crowd was estimated to be in the thousands not hundreds.

A special thank you to everyone who ventured to the ground to support MAG and the stallholders as without your ongoing support the event would fail.

Stallholders are lining up already to be included in our next Market on 31st March next year. For MAG to be able to maintain the standard we have achieved we are desperate for more people to put their hands to help out on the day.

With the start of school holidays, NSW Health is reminding people to be careful of snakes and spiders while outdoors and to pack a First Aid kit, particularly when camping.

Toxicology expert, Geoff Isbister from Newcastle’s Calvary Mater Hospital said snake bites traditionally increase in Spring ahead of a peak in late December and January and it is important to know what to do if this occurs.

“Particularly if holidaying in a regional area and especially while camping, try to avoid being bitten in the first place by not interfering with snakes, and wearing long pants and boots if walking in areas where snakes are present,” Dr Isbister said.

“Also ensure you are prepared and know what to do. If a person is bitten by a snake or spider, keep them rested and still, call an ambulance and use an elasticised bandage on the affected area.

“Tourniquets should not be applied, and the bite site should not be cut or sucked. Move slowly away from the snake and don’t try and kill it.”

NSW hospitals are prepared for snake season, with each Local Health District managing supplies of anti-venom, according to location, snake and spider populations and history of bites.

Dr Isbister says brown snake and tiger snake anti-venoms are the most commonly used treatments for snake bites in NSW.

“Symptoms from a venomous bite include nausea, vomiting, headache and in severe brown snake envenoming the patient may collapse and require cardiopulmonary resuscitation,” Dr Isbister said.

“Brown snake bites are probably the most common snake bite nationally and in NSW, and there are also lots of red-bellied black snakes, which are treated with tiger snake antivenom.”

When it comes to spiders, people need to be aware of funnel web and redback spiders.

Like snake bites, funnel web spider bites should be left untouched except for the use of an elasticised bandage and the victim should remain still until medical help arrives.

Redback spiders are found in dark and dry places, including shoes left outside, helmets, under outdoor furniture and sometimes in play and garden equipment.

Though rarely life-threatening, it is recommended the area around redback spider bites is washed and advice sought from the NSW Poisons Information Centre on 131126.

Well done to students of the Molong Central School who recently held a disco at the school raising $1200 to help businesses in town affected by the drought. “Small business also suffers during drought times,” said a spokesperson for the students. “We don’t want to see our town’s shops close, so we all decided that the money raised would buy 15 vouchers from the different shops and cafes around town and then raffled them, giving kids and school families the opportunity to win one - and support the businesses.” Thank you to the Primary School students of Molong Central School for caring about their town.

“We are a family of Mother Earth - Nurturing, Sharing, Caring” Euchareena Koori family, Fleur, Laurance, Yuri and Guurramali The Euchareena Public School, led by Principal Eve Munro, is a delightful small school set in bushland surrounded by native animals and gardens, green spaces, classrooms of learning and experience, a music room, art areas ... vegie gardens and a chook yard tended by the students.

This is a special site where Eve and her team of teachers, admin staff, parents and local volunteers are able to provide unique individual support to each student’s learning and development needs.

Although, ‘student’ barely describes the experiences and learning of the lucky children of the Euchareena Primary School.

Eve Munro and her team have created an ‘extended family’ atmosphere where each child is viewed as an individual - with learning, knowledge and skills building needs for their own future. It works! Just ask the children.

Whilst there are ‘four walls of traditional learning’ sites located within the natural bushland landscape - the sound of the old brass

bell also means time to learn together in the outdoors and the school landscape.

Last week the EPS community welcomed the Molong St. Joseph’s Primary School community to their school to learn with them in the outdoors.

Fleur and Laurance (above) worked amongst the two ‘families’ providing new understandings of the Koori stories of tribal customs, language, dance, crafts and those of spiritual connections to Mother Earth. The children were fascinated and eagerly worked together to create simple woven baskets, spiritual pieces - and to learn the Wiradjuri language .

During the day, the signing of a Partnership Agreement between the Euchareena Primary School EPS (Eve Munro) and the Molong Aboriginal Education Consultative Group (AECG) (Carmen Neil and Fleur) ) occurred. This will provide new opportunities for the school, village, Molong, Cabonne Country and most of all for the ‘family’ members.

The Euchareena Primary School and Molong St. Joseph’s Primary School ‘families’ learning about Koori spiritual beliefs at the special day at EPS last week. This is a story about how a shooting star from the heavens above enters the mother’s body to give life to a child.

The children then made their own spiritual pieces and simple food carrying baskets out of grasses, beads and bark. It was a wonderful day.

“The Molong Museum and the Old Fairbridgians Association were invited to arrange the feature for this year’s Molong Show. This included having an exhibit in the main pavilion on the history and aspects of life at the village.

The show was officially opened

by Derek Moriarty, President of the Old Fairbridgians Association.

Derek arrived at Fairbridge in 1951 as an 8-year-old. He was involved with Junior Farmers and attending the local Shows which he spoke of during his speech.

The first children arrived from England in March 1938 and settled at Fairbridge. The Farm continued to take children from England until 1964. It eventually closed in 1973, after being a short term home for Australian children.

These children came from England as part of the “British Child Migrant” scheme. The aim was to give underprivileged children a better life in the colonies. The Scheme established by Kingsley Fairbridge, a Rhodes Scholar, concerned about the conditions of under-privileged children in England. His idea was to “transplant children to the Colonies where there were wide open spaces. Altogether, some 1200 children passed through the Fairbridge Farm School. This can be broken down to 940 Children from England and 175 children from Australia. The village was selfsufficient with its own bakery, dairy vegetable gardens and farm.

The exhibit at the show was well

supported by locals and visitors, with many stories being passed along. Several Fairbridgians spent time viewing the display and renewing friendships. Features include several trophies and certificates that the children had earned.

This included School Certificates, Choir awards, Junior Farmers awards and sporting activities. This included playing against international teams, many visited the farm itself. All items are part of the “Fairbridge Collection” at the Molong Museum and can be viewed on request.

It was an opportunity to promote the “Fairbridge Children’s Park” which is an extension of the Memorial Park on the Mitchell Highway.

“The Fairbridge Children’s Park will acknowledge the legacy of Britain’s largest child migration schemes, which involved almost 1000 children travelling to attend the school outside Molong between 1938 and 1973. The proposed park and highway rest stop would an extension of the current roadside stop. Through landscape design, the park would tell the story from the children’s perspective and would be a place of learning and reflection and would focus on four themes, the children’s origin, passage, farm life and turn out.” (From promotion material prepared by OFA’s) Thank you to everyone who assisted in arranging the display and supporting us at the Show. Tractor Trek comes to Molong It will be a huge weekend on October 12/13/14 when tractors of all shapes, sizes and models together with their drivers and support team head to the Molong Showgrounds to start the annual Central West Charity Tractor Trek.

This will also be an opportunity for local families to join in the fun as spectators for what is going to be a spectacular event as the long line of tractors head through surrounding villages and farming areas as they complete their 3 days of trekking.

All monies raised over the three days will support the Little Wings charity which assists sick children in regional areas to travel to and from treatment.

The home base for the trek will be the Molong Showgrounds where the tractors will depart from on Friday 12 October at 1.30 p.m. to head to the farming areas of Gregra, Pinecliffe and surrounds before returning to the showgrounds at Molong for dinner.

Saturday morning after breakfast the tractors will head towards Cumnock at 8.30 a.m. before turning left 5kms - then to Garra and onto Manildra Road to the village of Manildra where they will be having morning tea.

They will then head to Gumble and onto Cumnock where lunch will be served before heading towards Yeoval.

Turning right down Avandale Road to Eurimbla

the tractors will then continue towards The Gap Road to Big Camp Road, across Wellington Road through Boomey and then back to the Molong Showground for dinner. A raffle will be held throughout the night with the opportunity to win an I20Hyundai kindly donated by Hyundi.

Sunday morning the tractors will head out along Euchareena Road to Boomey, Clergate and March - returning to the Molong Showground.

The drivers of the tractors will gladly accept donations along the way - all for a good cause to help regional kids access medical treatment in cities, regional centres etc.

"Wonderful asset": Andrew Gee announces $7,000 grant for Cumnock Men's Shed The Cumnock Men’s Shed has been awarded a grant of $7,000 from the Federal Government for tools and equipment under the latest round of the Government’s National Shed Development Programme.

Federal Member for Calare, Andrew Gee made the announcement during a visit to Cumnock earlier this week and congratulated the Men’s Shed for its successful application.

Mr Gee said the Cumnock Men’s Shed is in the process of being established and will be a wonderful asset to the local community once it’s up and running.

“Like similar sheds across Australia, the Cumnock Men’s Shed will offer support to any local men who need a bit of space and some friendly, easy-going company,” Mr Gee said.

“Men are often the last ones to make their health and wellbeing a priority. It’s imperative that we do what we can to ensure they get the support they need and deserve.”

Mr Gee said the Cumnock Men’s Shed will use its government grant to purchase a large array of tools for the new shed, including a welder, air compressor, floor drill, nail gun and a cordless tool kit. The shed will also purchase safety items such as PPE, fire extinguishers, gloves and welding helmets.

“Men are talking about their health more and more, and the men’s shed provides a safe and friendly environment for them to do so.

Men’s sheds are integral to the community and the benefits to men’s health are widely acknowledged,” Mr Gee added.

“Every day Men’s Sheds across Australia and in the Central West provide men with an opportunity for companionship and support within their community.”

The Men’s Shed grants programme provides funding for health improvement activities, the purchase of tools and equipment, community projects and training, and for building maintenance and development.

Mullion Creek tennis courts benefit by NSW govt funding boost

Parliamentary Secretary for Western NSW Rick Colless (centre) announces $260,000 worth of funding from the NSW Government’s Crown Reserves Improvement fund at Mullion Creek tennis courts. The tennis courts will receive a $164,000 upgrade.

Cabonne Council has warmly welcomed $176,000 in funding for two projects under the NSW Government’s Crown Reserves Improvement Fund.

Mayor Kevin Beatty was delighted with the news that $164,000 would be spent on upgrading the Mullion Creek tennis courts and $12,000 had been allocated to spray the infestation of pest plants at East Molong Reserve.

“On behalf of Cabonne Council, I wish to thank the NSW Government for this generous grant funding.” Cr Beatty said.

“The Mullion Creek project will enable the courts to be used for multiple sports and this will provide great benefits to the community, especially the growing number of families in the area” he said.

The two Cabonne projects were

among six in the Orange electorate which will receive almost $260,000 from the fund.

Announcing the funding last Friday (28 September) at Mullion Creek, Parliamentary Secretary for Western NSW Rick Colless said the funding would support the hard work of local groups.

“This is fantastic news for the Orange electorate. It’s vital that we keep these reserves upgraded and modern for community members to use and enjoy,” he said.

“A flagship project will be kicked off with $164,000 to upgrade the tennis courts at Mullion Creek Recreation Reserve.

“This will include upgrading the existing sand tennis courts, constructing an exercise pathway through the reserve and installing exercise stations.”

The Molong Yarn Market attracts busloads of visitors to town who enjoy absorbing the story of Molong and district by medium of the amazing tapestry in the Coach house, made by members some 35 years ago.

A walk through the Village Green to the Yarn Market Cottage to admire and purchase

locally made crafts, art, and food products continues the visit. A delicious country style lunch, or morning or afternoon tea made by the members in the historic stables is also popular. Like all members, Barb Strong, pictured above, loves talking to visitors such as these from the Illawarra.

Amongst the many visitors to the Molong Markets and Bank Street last Monday were Luke and Alecia Dolden of Sydney, who work and spend time with friends in Molong.

The girls at the new Pop-Up Shop (Western Stores building) were able to fit Luke and Alecia out with designer country hats and shirts at the best ever sale price. (Note: The Pop-Up Shop will be open again this Friday, Saturday morning and all day Sunday, along with other retail and food outlets in Bank Street, and the Molong Yarn Market.)

By the 1950s the social structure I grew up with was vanishing as post-war reconstruction saw families split into smaller units, spreading far and wide. Parents lost that pool of knowledge, that back-up, and so began to turn to the experts.

A brief example. When they could no longer stay awake, the kids collapsed on old cushions and blankets stuffed under the wallbenches. At supper time if the hall was big enough, the kids would have a separate buffet, if not they waited till the adults had got their fill of tea, sandwiches and cake and then were allowed in to clean up the rest.

It was beneficial to both parties.

Raspberry vinegar and grubby hands were kept away from “best dresses� and suits and the adults didn’t have to shout to make themselves heard above the feeding frenzy as ravenous kids devoured the Pavlova, cream sponge, sausage rolls and fairy bread. For our part we weren’t bombarded with “wipe your mouth, use a serviette, chew your food before you swallow it, don’t rub mock cream in Jennifer’s hair�. It was far more sensible and civilised. Such supper-hall etiquette had all but disappeared by the late 70s.

In its turn, the no-discipline theory was replaced by the doctrine of ‘We should be friends with our children who are, after all, adults in miniature and must have their independence’. The experts were tightening their grip.

When I was a nipper, as I think I’ve said before, kids and grown-ups lived on the same planet, but that’s about all you could say of them. Friends be buggered.

Both generations lived under a sort of permanent flag of truce, as long as the rules were observed by both sides.

Oh you loved you parents and siblings all right, along with your extended family, but that was in that other, private hemisphere reserved for badly cut legs and big disappointments and broken carts that needed fixing and wanting to know how fast crocodiles could run; reserved for when the dog died, or a relative was in a coffin in the best room of their house and you were afraid that the ghost might come and tap you on the shoulder or, worse still, you just might be called on to be the sineater (thank my childhood investigation into the folklore of my Welsh greatgrandfather for that one).

But on the surface at least it was a fragile peace, easily broken by the injustices of adults or rule infringements by kids.

Outside school hours, you were expected to stay out of the house and the adults’ hair. Once you’d done your chores they didn’t want to see you until it was time to sit down to a meal.

I’ve heard it said that even young kids are entitled to the privacy of their own room. Yeah? In the 40s and 50s kids didn’t have private lives, even if you didn’t have to share a room with a sibling. You were left pretty much to your own devices but all the time knowing you were under the scrutiny of Big Brother in the person of any adult within earshort.

A grown-up didn’t have to know you to chastise you, that was part of the rules.

They could threaten the boot in the backside, even to skin you alive or, worst of all, to â€œâ€Śtell your mother, Sonny Jim and don’t think I don’t know herâ€?. Such threats had to be warranted, the rules allowed for juvenile retribution if they weren’t, and all in all the system worked pretty well. Armistice reigned most of the time.

It was a given that kids on public transport gave their seat up to an adult – even little kids. It was also a given that the beneficiary would offer to sit you on their lap, Mum or aunty’s lap being occupied with babies or parcels, for the duration of the journey.

Again, it wasn’t all it’s often cracked up to be. Teachers were allowed to cane you – I still maintain that too many ‘six of the bests’ contributed to finger-joint problems that are today beginning to affect my guitar playing – and for the most part the law turned a blind eye to domestic violence and maltreated kids.

But as a kid you accepted your lot. Okay, so you’d broken some stupid school rule and you were up for the cane. So you copped it sweet. That was the rules. You were a kid and you knew your place and you could always hope to get bitten by a norn (Western Australia’s black tiger snake) and die and that’d learn ‘em. Even as a teenager in full-time paid work, as long as you lived at home you paid ‘board’ to your mother and continued to do chores, the younger kids taking over the ones befitting their place in the pecking order.

By then you also might have begun to realise that a Grampa had nightmares because he spent the last of his teenage years in the mind-scarring muck of the Western Front and that your mate’s Dad was only 21 when he copped it in the Middle East, leaving him fatherless and his mum a widow, so you’d grudgingly admit they had some sort of right to control you.

But by then the pursuit of dreams had taken over from simpler pleasures, families were strewn across the country and generational gaps appeared into which fell or were thrown the accumulated folk-wisdom and child-raising skills of numberless generations.

Parents were now firmly in the grip of the Experts who maintained that children are really adults but without an adult’s responsibilities.

We believed them, and both kids and adults were to suffer the consequences.

Oldest Annual Agricultural Exhibition in Australia The Australian National Field Days (ANFD) is the oldest annual agricultural exhibition in the country. Established in 1952, the ANFD continues to offer visitors a unique insight into the future of agriculture with the commitment to Advancing Australian Agriculture.

ANFD Manager, Jayne West, explained more than 600 exhibitors now travel to the Borenore site (15kms west of Orange, NSW) from all over Australia and internationally to display their products and services during the three-day event.

“The event has come a long way from a discussion between two local men after attending a farm machinery demo day in the Hawkesbury in 1951,” Jayne outlined.

“The early days saw the Orange Branch of the Graziers’ Association, a group of machinery agents and primary producers get together to provide comparative demonstrations so that farmers could see machines designed for a specific purpose working side-by-side.

“The very first Orange Field Day was staged at “Kyala Park” owned by Mr W Dutton. It featured displays and demonstrations by 40 exhibitors and attracted an estimated crowd of 5,000.

From there it was declared a resounding success

and became an annual event held at various properties until the permanent 75-hectare site was purchased at Borenore in 1972.

“Since 1952, the field days have been organised by a voluntary committee of local farmers, graziers, orchardists, machinery agents and government departmental officers who feel very strongly that it must be maintained a specifically agricultural event and the concept of comparative demonstrations must be of paramount importance.

“In 1966, the Orange Field Days Co-op Limited was formed and registered as a ‘Community Advancement Society’ to administer the Australian National Field Days.

“It’s hard to believe the humble beginnings of the field day site. Our purpose-built facility now boasts sealed roads, disabled access, well grassed sites, full sanitary facilities, electricity to most sites, onsite security, full catering and bar facilities - all in a pleasant bushland setting.

“We now have a team of onsite staff to help exhibitors and visitors to have the best experience possible during their visit to the ANFD.”

Make sure your membership is paid well in advance of the tournament as you must be financial to play in all Club events and Championships.

MOLONG GOLF Last Wednesday 7 golfers turned up for 18 holes, but was washed out with the lovely rain that we had. We were then joined by 3 others for lunch at the Freemasons.

There will be the usual golf on Wednesday 8.30 for a 9.00am tee off. ******************************* We has 8 players last Sunday morning. The bloody limb on the 8th came into play again.

Lamb numbers increased this week with agents yarding 3170 Sheep numbers decreased this week with agents yarding 1200 This week saw a fair quality yarding with a good mix of new season and restocker lambs, the older lambs were mostly plain.

It was a mostly a plainer quality yarding of mutton on offer where most grades were $10 to $30.

Carcoar this week saw the same fall in the market as did the other selling centres, the lamb market drop is due to the amount of lambs coming onto the market in the south and the mutton market drop is due to the dry conditions and a flood in the numbers over all states. Due to all these numbers coming in the market will continue to drop over the next few weeks, but in saying that lamb will still be around the $6 to $7 market over the hook rate which in the current climate isn’t still too bad.

CTLX cattle market report 1/10/18

This week’s yarding saw a decrease in the yarding compared to previous week with 1460 cattle yarded. Cows were well supplied, along with a good selection of feeder cattle, as well as a few better finished cattle the balance of the yarding was made up of light secondary cattle.

Young cattle to the trade were 7c to 10c cheaper, feeder cattle were 12c to 15c cheaper, young cattle to restockers were a little better.

Plain cows were 8c to 14c cheaper while heavy cows were also cheaper by 20c to 30c.

The market decreased for feeder types and cows, however secondary type cattle were up on last week, I think the slight raise is on the back of the weather forecast for this week. Let’s hope they get it right this week and we see general rain over the region.
