"Bri" breezes into Molong's pool

A fresh face has arrived at Molong's Swimming Pool - one of the seven beloved summer retreats throughout Cabonne.

Meet Bri Celledoni (Photo left), Molong Pool's new venue Manager. The Express spoke with Bri this week while she was hard at it getting ready for the season which opens this weekend.

Bri made it clear that it is our pool. Coming from a background ranging from dance teaching, newspapers, marketing, you name it, Bri was keen to emphasise the importance of our pools as community facilities offering a friendly welcome to local kids and adults to enjoy a cool swim, play and meet up with friends during the hot summer months and enjoy their visit.

Bri hails from Dalby in Queensland, via Forbes, moving here with her partner who landed pharmacy work in Orange.

Bri was aware of the "choppy" start to the new management arrangements introduced last season but emphasised her job was to operate the pool - not run it - for the community.

New government mandated rules for pool management, especially, safety have affected the way Cabonne pools need to be managed. Bri

reckons that good communication is the key and we reckon Bri is the one to do it. Welcome to Molong Bri. Meanwhile Council has advised that the opening date of all Cabonne pools is Saturday, 6 November. This date is for pools in Canowindra, Cudal, Cumnock, Eugowra, Manildra, Molong and Yeoval. Pool opening times vary for each of the towns and villages, and can be found on Council’s website, as well as the entry prices for the pools. [Bri will post these outside the pool].

Season passes return for the 2021/22 season, with the five village pools included in this deal (please note that village pools do not include Molong and Canowindra).

Due to current Public Health Orders, pool attendees who are aged 16 years and over must be double vaccinated. Council will endeavour to keep the community informed as the Public Health Orders change.

Halloween strikes again

"Happy Halloween' said the fantastically dressed children who stopped over at the Molong Express office where Paul Mullins handed out wrapped lollies to the COVID safe 'trick and treaters'. There were dozens of kids and adults alike enjoying the fun of collecting goodies from kind householders and businesses all over town "It was great to see families dressed up and having fun" said Paul who also commented "the children were very well behaved and polite. They are a credit to their parents, families, schools and the town."

Ivy Barrett enjoyed a visit from her son, Ken, of the North Coast last week - and time out from time out of the long COVID lockdown at Prunus Lodge.

Marg Moss joined her mother and brother for a trip down ‘memory lane’ to take a look at the orchard property where Ivy lived with her family - and helped to work the orchard - and in later years where her and late husband Frank Barrett lived and raised their family.

A lunchtime meal at the new look Telegraph Hotel in Bank Street was enjoyed where all three commented ‘the meal was delicious’ with Ivy impressed by the renovations.

Vicki Duff (Nee Bloomfield) popped into our office to gift us a bound set of early 1950’s ‘Molong Express’. Vicki is the Daughter of the late and great Norm Bloomfield who published the Express for over 50 years.

Demergers debacle: Minister says ‘move on’

Minister for Local Government, Shelley Hancock, has told the financially and emotionally distraught communities of Cootamundra, Gundagai and the Snowy Valleys to ‘move on’.

Appearing in Budget Estimates yesterday, the Minister was questioned by Mark Buttigieg MLC about the push from the communities to split after being forced by the NSW Government to merge in 2016.

The Local Government Boundaries Commission investigated two proposals to demerge Cootamundra Gundagai Regional Council and Snowy Valleys and presented its findings to Minister Hancock in February this year.

Minister Hancock conceded the six months it took to make a decision was ‘a little too long’, however she was unapologetic about her decision to deny both demergers.

“The decision is made – it has to be done,” Minister Hancock said.

Shadow Minister for Local Government, Greg Warren MP, said the Minister’s advice to ‘move on’ was insensitive and disrespectful to both communities still reeling from the forced mergers.

“Both communities were sceptical about the Local Government Boundaries

Commission investigation before it began and the result shows that scepticism was well founded,” he said.

“Many residents in those communities believed the decision to not allow a demerger was a fait accompli and it is easy to see why they believe that.

“The Cootamundra and Gundagai communities have been hit with a 53.5% special rate variation as a result of the bungled demergers policy.

“I wonder if Minister Hancock would ‘move on’ if her rates increased that excessively.

“Telling those residents to ‘move on’ is insensitive, insulting and inconsiderate.

“Minister Hancock said she understood the communities anger regarding the decision but it’s clear Minister Hancock has no idea how the communities of Cootamundra, Gundagai and Snowy Valleys feel.”

Mark Buttigieg MLC said, “The Minister’s comments at today’s hearing demonstrates that the Liberal and National Government is completely out of touch with local communities.”

Our “Em” nominated for journalism award Around this time last year, Emily Gobourg completed her university internship at the Molong Express, where Paul and Rozzi then offered her a freelance role at the paper.

Over the last year, Em’s been extremely grateful to have been able to cover several local stories, meet a ton of new people in the town, and to be a part of a small print media crew; with a quirky sense of humour, and a shared love of Molong.

Now awaiting her final grades release, Em has reached the end of four years of study at Charles Sturt University (CSU) in Bathurst, and will soon proudly hold her Bachelors in Communications (majoring in the field of journalism). She has also maintained sufficient grades to qualify for the Honours program if she so chooses to further her studies in the future.

To add to the excitement, Em was also recently contacted by the Communications Director at Bathurst’s CSU, hearing that Emily Gobourg (made up for Halloween) she’d been recognised by a senior with Express publisher Paul Mullins and his journalism educator (in Brisbane) for basket of lollies last Sunday evening her work on a story submission during organised by the Journalism Education a longform journalism subject. and Research Association of Australia Submitted as her final major assessment (JERAA). The weather gets choppy with Joyce and Morrison’s climate contradictions n the press gallery at Parliament House, there’s a bell that years ago was rung regularly to alert journalists to press conferences and statements. Email has made it an anachronism.

But shortly before 8am on Thursday Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce appeared in the gallery, looking rather agitated, and personally rang the bell.

Joyce was there to lay an ownership claim to the exclusion of a methane reduction pledge from the 2050 net-zero climate plan Scott Morrison announced on Tuesday. “One of the key reasons that the Nationals went in to bat has become so clearly evident today,” Joyce declared.

This followed a report in The Australian, briefed by the office of Emissions Reduction Minister Angus Taylor, rejecting the United States push for a 30% reduction by 2030 of methane emissions (produced by cows burping, gas extraction, and the like).

Taylor apparently had been onto the methane exclusion issue for some time.

Later on Thursday Morrison said the government never had any intention of agreeing to the reduction. He also rejected Joyce’s confusing claim there was an agriculture carve out from the climate plan.

Who gets political “branding rights” on the treatment of methane was just the latest pinch point in the fallout from Tuesday’s announcement.

Much doubt has been created by the government’s failure to release the plan’s modelling, which Morrison says will be out in a few weeks – that is, after COP26 is well and truly behind him.

An industry department official told a Senate estimates committee the material was being put into digestible shape.

“As the plan was only finalised on Tuesday, we need to make sure we have written that technical work up. The actual modelling, of course, had been finalised at that point.

"But the write-up of that – we just need to take a little bit of extra time to make sure that it’s written clearly and able to be presented well to the Australian public,” Jo Evans, a deputy secretary in the

department, said.

Meanwhile most of the trade-offs the Nationals have received for their reluctant support continue to remain a mystery.

Joyce, who became acting prime minister after Morrison departed on Thursday night for the G20 in Rome followed by COP26 in Glasgow, is likely to announce certain measures while he’s in the spotlight.

But others are to be in the budget update at the end of the year, presented as election commitments, or in next year’s budget if that occurs before the election.

Some of these unknown measures still have to be brought forward as cabinet submissions and go through the formal bureaucratic hoops, including being costed.

That shows how unsatisfactory the process has been – the government had months to deal with net-zero, settling things with the minor Coalition partner and finalising the trade-offs.

More importantly from the Nationals’ standpoint, they’re left exposed as they return to their electorates now parliament has risen for a three-week break. When they meet their constituents, they are not able to produce the suite of benefits they obtained in return for their policy sign-up.

For Morrison the 2050 policy is an attempted barnacle-removing process, for both the Glasgow conference and the election. The Nationals, in contrast, see it adding to their barnacles.

The rejection of the requested methane cuts is another indication of the general weakness of the Australian plan. For all the struggle to land it, the plan is a bare minimum and will be seen as such in Glasgow.

Domestically, given the flaws and inadequacies, the plan is not likely to win votes for the government; rather, it is designed to stem the loss of them to Labor and independents in the “leafy” southern seats.

We’ve yet to see Labor’s alternative but one would think independent candidates will still have plenty of scope to stake out ground on the climate issue.

Earlier this week Morrison made some comments that set off speculation he planned a May poll, as opposed to a March-April one.

A May election would give the time for another budget, with the opportunities that brought.

Whether the election is in May or March, Morrison is already in campaign mode.

In this week’s Newspoll, the government is on the back foot, trailing 46-54% on the two-party vote. Regardless, both sides regard the battle as open.

Despite the election being so near, Labor hasn’t broken out of a trot. Albanese’s strategy is to leave the attention on the government and, more generally, to keep Labor a small target in policy terms. On the logic of its wider approach Labor could be expected to be cautious in the policy

it issues on climate change, although it is still debating its position, expected to be released before Christmas.

Albanese has been heavily influenced, negatively, by his predecessor Bill Shorten’s approach before the 2019 election, when Labor put forward an extensive and radical bag of policies.

The big target approach was seen to have scared off voters.

Whether the small target will encourage people to vote Labor is hard to judge. The danger for the opposition is that, in the absence of a leader who is a drawcard, many people might be inclined to stick with the status quo.

Without the prospect of much substantive and highly differentiated policy being contested, the seat-by-seat campaigning will be especially significant at this election. Voters think local to a greater extent than they used to.

On Thursday the government introduced controversial legislation to require voters to produce ID at the polling booth. Labor and some in the welfare sector warn this will discourage the disadvantaged, including Indigenous people, from voting. The government says there would be plenty of protections – a range of identification could be used, including a Medicare card, and a person without identification would be allowed to cast a vote, with his or her identity checked later.

Given the widespread demand for identification for all sorts of things in our community, the requirement for ID when voting is not unreasonable. But it seems a solution in search of a problem, because voter fraud hasn’t been a feature of federal elections.

And it reflects distorted priorities that this legislation has been introduced before we see the bill for the long-awaited national integrity commission. (theconversation.com.au)

Fixing the roads - Council has a job ahead of it

Cabonne Council has received a report on the the impacts the weather has had on the roads in recent months, especially the wet weather conditions throughout winter after an enduring drought over the last few years.

The unsealed road network has been impacted by both high intensity rain events, as well as consistent low intensity rainfall, while potholes have been forming in the sealed road network at a much higher than normal rate.

In a statement Council said “road crews are currently stretched, with teams working six days a week to improve the condition of the roads, with a prioritisation on heavy use roads.

Council committed an additional $450,000 to the Rural Roads Maintenance budget to further address road maintenance across the LGA. We are asking for the community’s help in identifying roads of particular concern and your understanding that the teams can only work on so many roads at a time.

The high intensity events have resulting in scouring and gravel loss on several roads. Consistent low intensity rainfall has resulted in sections of the road pavement material becoming saturated leading to damage from traffic loading.

It is noted that unsealed roads, where additional drainage works have been recently undertaken with the funds allocated in the budget for this specific activity, have experience less damage in recent rain events.

normal rate. More significant damage has been caused recently with the consistent rainfall causing groundwater to start flowing to the surface, forming springs under the road surface. The springs result in more substantial pavement failures and are more costly to repair due to the presence of water in the pavement.

Council’s Transport Infrastructure team have been responding appropriately to the needs of the network. The frequency of road inspections has been increased to better identify defects and follow up on the increased number of Customer Service

Requests from road users. Appropriate warning signs are erected where required during these inspections, to warn road users of the condition until repairs can be completed. Council staff are working additional shifts to assist with meeting the increased need for road maintenance.

As a result of the additional resources in use, along with an increase in the volume of materials used to repair sealed roads, expenditure against council’s Rural Roads Maintenance budget allocation is tracking higher than initially planned at the end of the first quarter.

Expenditure will continue to increase as damage to sealed roads, by the formation of springs, is repaired in the second quarter. It is recommended that additional funds be allocated to the Rural Roads Maintenance budget allocation. As the total extent of damage is not yet well defined and will likely continue to grow with more rain forecast in the coming months, the funds requested are not intended to cover the cost of rectifying all defects, but rather to ensure council can undertake some significant repairs, while maintaining sufficient funds in the maintenance budget to continue road maintenance operations while council is in caretaker period.

GrowMolong has coordinated with St John Ambulance Molong Cadet Division and local sporting Clubs, and venues to install 6 Defibrillators in Molong. Fundraising and a grant from the NSW Office of sport will cover the cost of each unit which will be presented by Mr Phil Donato MP. Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA). This term is given to the sudden loss of heart function. The heart is no longer pumping blood and oxygen around to the vital organs of the body.

30,000+ Sudden Cardiac Arrests occur every year in Australia and unfortunately, without defibrillation and CPR, fewer than 5% survive.

In NSW alone, over 8,500 people experience a SCA every year. Only 12% will survive.

Every minute that passes without defibrillation reduces the chance of survival by 10% WHAT IS DEFIBRILLATION? Defibrillation is the act of delivering an

electric shock to the heart. A defibrillator is a sophisticated life-saving device used to treat Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA).

NSW encouraged to Festival to celebrate summer and vote early: showcase country lifestyle Check your voting options for local council elections

Voters are encouraged to check their voting options for the NSW Local Government elections with all voters now eligible to vote before election day and expanded eligibility for postal voting.

John Schmidt, NSW Electoral Commissioner said that in response to COVID-19 all voters are able to vote early in person, postal voting eligibility has been expanded and for voters meeting strict eligibility criteria, iVote, the Commission’s technology-assisted online and telephone voting platform will be available at local council elections for the first time.

“Local Government elections will be held on 4 December but there are also several ways voters can get their vote in ahead of that date. Voter safety is paramount, as is ensuring every eligible elector in NSW has a chance to have their voice heard.

“For the first time all voters are eligible to vote in person at any time during the two-week voting period when a polling place is open. Early voting venues are listed on our website,” he said.

Recent amendments to the Local Government Act 1993 and Local Government (General) Regulation 2021 mean that voters will have a longer period in which to apply for, receive and return postal voting packs.

Postal vote applications are open from today, Tuesday 26 October, and postal votes must be received by 6pm, 17 December.

All polling places will be run in line with COVID-safe election guidelines including physical distancing, mask wearing, singleuse pens and queue management.

Signage and staff will direct voters to check in and comply with NSW Health advice.

The Orange Winter Fire Festival put on hold due to COVID-19 will become the Celebrate Orange360 festival to celebrate all things regional NSW thanks to a $144,750 grant from the NSW Government’s Regional Events Acceleration Fund.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW Paul Toole said NSW Government funding will help deliver the festival that encourages locals and visitors to explore the delights of Orange in summer, with amazing local food and cool climate wines.

“The Celebrate Orange360 festival over 10– 12 December will allow everyone to enjoy live performances, Orange Wine Festival tastings and events, the best local produce and the region’s famous cherries over three days,” Mr Toole said.

“Local producers will be serving up authentic local food and drinks throughout the region’s cellar doors, breweries and orchards, which will help encourage visitors to stay longer and spend more in local shops and eateries at the most festive time of year.

Mr Toole said hosting major events like the Celebrate Orange360 festival puts more heads on beds and fills restaurants, cafes and tourist attractions, driving regional NSW’s economic recovery from bushfire, floods, drought and COVID-19.

ACCC warns phone users to be aware of evolving Flubot scams

A text message scam that contacts thousands of Australians a day has evolved to entice phone users to install software security — to protect against its own malicious malware.

Since August, Australians have received text messages purporting to be an unopened voicemail notification, with a link encouraging users to download the scam “voicemail”.

Cyber security experts have warned the scam has morphed into an elaborate scheme that plays on users’ security fears.

In a strange twist, the scam has begun enticing phone users to download extra security to protect their phone — from their own scam.

Delia Rickard, Deputy Chair of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission said, “It’s a tsunami that’s

hit the country”.

“It started in August and changes from month to month,” Ms Rickard said.

The ACCC’s Scamwatch has noted an increase in these types of scams, known as ‘Flubot’.

In September, the scam text messages included a link to track or pay for a fake parcel.

The scam evolved again in October, ironically asking phone users to download more security to protect themselves from ‘Flubot’ itself.

“When you click through, you’re told that your device is infected with ‘Flubot’ malware, and you have to install an security update to remove it,” Ms Rickard said.

The ACCC has found phone calls continue to be the most common way

scammers reach consumers with financial losses of $66.8 million reported between January 1 to October 3, 2021 from 120,279 reports.

This represents a 104 per cent increase in financial losses and an 87 per cent increase in reports.

The ACCC understands Android and iPhones can both receive texts from Flubot, but the malware can only be downloaded to Android phones.

The malware not only downloads your personal information, including banking details and passwords, but can send out messages to your phone contacts to encourage others to install.

The golden rule is to never click on the link.

“Scammers constantly pretend to be the government, or your bank or your telco,”

said Ms Rickard.

“Never click on links that come to you out of the blue, no matter who they say they are or what’s the purpose.”

Just Hang Up It is not just text scams that are inundating Australians.

NSW Crime Stoppers have launched a new campaign ‘Just Hang Up’ to encourage phone users to protect themselves from phone scammers.

“A legitimate institution will not ask probing or personal questions on an unsolicited call,” said CEO of NSW Crime Stoppers Peter Price.

“Hanging up may be the difference between being scammed or not,” Mr Price said.

Phone users who have received a scam text can report it to Scamwatch.

Magazine 60 years after it first gazed at the skies, the Parkes dish is still making breakthroughs The CSIRO’s 64-metre Parkes Radio Telescope was commissioned on October 31 1961. At the time it was the most advanced radio telescope in the world, incorporating many innovative features that have since become standard in all large-dish antennas.

Through its early discoveries it quickly became the leading instrument of its kind.

Today, 60 years later, it is still arguably the finest single-dish radio telescope in the world. It is still performing worldclass science and making discoveries that shape our understanding of the Universe.

The telescope’s origins date back to wartime radar research by the Radiophysics Laboratory, part of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), the forerunner of the CSIRO. On the Sydney clifftops at Dover Heights, the laboratory developed radar for use in the Pacific theatre. When the second world war ended, the technology was redirected into peaceful applications, including studying radio waves from the Sun and beyond.

In 1946, British physicist Edward “Taffy” Bowen was appointed chief of the Radiophysics Laboratory. He had been one of the brilliant engineers, dubbed “boffins”, who developed radar as part of Britain’s secret prewar military research.

The Radiophysics Laboratory had a dedicated radio astronomy group, led by the brilliant Joseph (Joe) Pawsey. Many of the group’s members went on to become leaders in the nascent field of radio astronomy, including Bernie Mills, Chris Christiansen, Paul Wild, Ruby PayneScott (the first female radio astronomer), and John Bolton.

While the group’s initial research focused on radio waves from the Sun, Bolton’s attention soon shifted to identifying other sources from farther afield. By the early 1950s, the Dover Heights radar dishes had discovered more than 100 sources of radio emissions from the Milky Way and beyond, including the signals from supernova explosions. These observations established the Radiophysics Laboratory as a world-leading centre of radio astronomy.

By 1954, the technology at Dover Heights was outdated and obsolete, prompting Bowen to initiate the next step for Australian radio astronomy: a state-

of-the-art new radio telescope.

He decided the most versatile option was to build a large, fully steerable dish antenna. The eventual price tag was A$1.4 million (A$25.6 million in today’s terms) – far beyond CSIRO’s budget at the time.

The Menzies government agreed to fund the project, provided at least 50% of the money came from the private sector. Using his wartime contacts, Bowen secured A$250,000 each from the Carnegie Corporation and Rockefeller Foundation, plus a range of private Australian donations.

REG’S BENCH An airliner is fully boarded and ready to push-off from the gate, when two blind pilots enter the main cabin.

The pilots both are wearing dark glasses, one is using a guide dog and the other is tapping his way along the aisle with a cane. Nervous laughter spreads through the cabin, but the men enter the cockpit, the door closes, and the engines start up.

The passengers begin glancing nervously around, searching for some sign that this is just a little practical joke.

None is forthcoming. The plane moves faster and faster down the runway and the people sitting in the window seats realize they're headed straight for the water at the edge of the airport.

As it begins to look as though the plane will plough in to the water, panicked screams fill the cabin. At that moment, the plane lifts smoothly into the air.

The passengers relax and laugh a little sheepishly, and soon all retreat into their magazines, secure in the knowledge that the plane is in good hands.

In the cockpit, one of the blind pilots turns to the other and says, "You know, Bob, one of these days, they're gonna scream too late and we're all gonna die."

A monkey is sitting in a tree, smoking a joint, when a lizard walks past.

The lizard looks up and says “Hey, what are you doing?”

The monkey says “Smoking a joint.

So the lizard climbs up and sits next to the monkey, and they have another joint.

After a while, the lizard says his mouth is ‘dry’, and that he’s going to get a drink from the river.

A crocodile sees this and swims over to the stoned lizard, helping him to the side.

The lizard explains that he was up in the tree, smoking a joint with the monkey and his mouth got dry, and that he was so wasted that, when he went to get a drink from the river, he fell in!

The inquisitive crocodile says he has to check this out.

He walks into the jungle and finds the tree where the monkey is sitting, finishing a joint.

He looks up and says “Hey, MONKEY!” The monkey looks down and says “OMG! DUUUUDE …. HOW MUCH WATER DID YOU DRINK?!”

Molong Golf

Sunday What a glorious day for golf on Sunday when we had sixteen players for a two person ambrose. The winners were Cookie and Steve with the runners up being Al and Doug Watson. We had a nearest the pin on the tenth which was won by Al and the longest drive on the first which was won by Jye. Last week I think Jye may have lost a few golf balls, this week it was Kade’s turn when he put one over the fence on the seventh and again on the fourteenth. Just as well golf balls are not too expensive.

I see Woody Mann out having a hit with a couple of mates and after watching his tee shot on the tenth I think Woody needs the fairways to be much much wider than they are. Again a big thank you to Scott for mowing the fairways and to Kerry and Erin for mowing the rough although some players suggested Scott should have forgot about the fairways and concentrated on the rough. Thanks also to Stubba and Bell for the work they do to keep the course looking so good.

Cookie was again on bbq duties and Matt Earle was his assistant with the onions and bread. Thanks fellas.

Bro’s moustache is coming along nicely and he now looks like one of those southern gentlemen from the American Wild West. We will miss him on Sunday as he is going on a bike ride. Keep it upright ole mate.

But since i fell beneath it’s spell, i’ve wandered through the fires of hell.

My life has not been quite the same, since I chose to play this stupid game.

It rules my life for hours on end, a fortune it has made me spend.

It has made me curse and made me cry, and hate myself and want to die.

It promises me a thing called par, if I hit it straight and far.

To master such a tiny ball, should not be very hard at all.

But my desires the ball refuses, and does exactly as it chooses.

It hooks and slices, dribbles and dies, and disappears before my eyes.

Often it will have a whim, to hit a tree or take a swim.

With miles of grass on which to land, it finds a tiny patch of sand.

Then has me offering up my soul, if only it would find the hole.

It’s made me whimper like a pup, and swear that I will give it up.

And take to drink to ease my sorrow, but the ball knows….. I’ll be back tomorrow.

The Oilsplus Senior Cricket Competition kick off last weekend a month later then normal due to the ongoing Covid Restrictions. Premiers Canowindra kicked off their defence with an easy win over a disappointing Milthorpe, Last Seasons Wooden Spooners Molong Magpies got their season away to a good start beating Lyndhurst and Cudal were too strong for Country.

Lyndhurst V Molong Magpies Last seasons wooden spooners travelled to Lyndurst to take on last seasons finalists in the first round of the season. The visitors won the toss and elected to bat. It was slow going for the Magpies batsmen. The normally lightning fast Lyndhurst oval was lush and thick and boundaries were rare as the ball just wouldn't run.

Lyndhurst's opening attack bowled an excellent line and length and Magpies struggled early. At drinks the visitor's were going ok at 3 for 70. The second stanza was similar the first and Magpies were dismissed all out in the 40th over for 143. Nick Swamy 28, Greg Pringle 21 and Tim Milne 18no the best for Magpies.

Madison Marmion carried on her good form from last season taking 3 for 24. R Kelly 2 for 37 and Ash Clark 1 for 4 also bowled well. A real killer for Lyndhurst was the 18 sundries. They will need to address that as it will cost them in tight matches.

In reply the home team got off to a good start reaching 23 before the first wicket fell. Like Magpies they also were 70 at drinks although 5 wickets down. After drinks Lyndhurst batted well and were well in the match mainly due to Magpies dropping 5 relatively straightforward catches. Captain James Kovac batted well however when he was dismissed for 17 Lyndhurst couldn't reach the 144 for victory and were all out for 108. T O'Malley was Lyndhurst's top scorer with 24.

Tim Milne capped off a great match taking 2 for 16, Brett Johnson bowled beautifully at the death finishing off Lyndhurst with 4 for 10. Adam Osborne 2 for 20 and Jake Evans 2 for 17 also bowled well. Good win for Magpies but unless there's improvement their fielding is going to cost them down the track as catches win matches.

Canowindra V Millthorpe Grand Final reply in the first round. The home team won the toss and as you do on synthetic batted first.

The Premiers were in all sorts of trouble losing 3 early wickets. The dangerous Craig Carpenter a duck and Pete Heller removing the Traves brothers cheaply to have the home side struggling 3 for 12! However an 86 run partnership between brothers Jamie and Sam Austin put Canowindra back on track. Jamie made 36 before he was dismissed but Sam continued on with a brilliant

knock of 87 putting Canowindra well on top. Canowindra batted their 40 overs scoring 6 for 165.

Despite the early breakthroughs Millthorpe's attack couldn't capitalise. Pete Heller with 2 for 33 and B Cooper 3 for 28 were Millthorpe's best.

In reply Canowindra ripped through the Millthorpe batting lineup. 10 batsman not reaching double figures!

All out for 73 in the 25th over. 12 Sundries second top score.

Man of the match Sam Austin took 3 for 9 to cap of an amazing match. Jamie Austin 2 for 16 also having a great day and Angus Fisher 3 for 12 all too good for Millthorpe.

The Premiers showed they will certainly be the team to beat again this season despite losing early wickets have good batting depth and a potent bowling attack.

Millthorpe will be dissapointed however they had a few players unavailable and will look to bounce back this week against Country at home.

Cudal V Country After missing the finals for the first time in many many years Cudal have got their 2021/22 season off to a positive start with a comfortable win over Country at Molong.

Winning the toss and batting the visitors got off to a shaky start losing both openers cheaply. However their middle order played well lead by Jock Hough with 49, Toby Mendl 41 and Scotty Barrett 38 allowing Cudal to post a very competitive total of 7 for 181 at the end of their innings.

Evergreen Joe Clayton the best for Country with the figures of 3 for 35. James Brazier also chipping in with 2 for 30.

In reply Country looked on track thanks to veteran opener Andrew Heath scoring a solid 51. However he had little support from the remaining batsman with Sean Clayton 18 the only other notable score, Country all out 155 well short of the 182 target.

Lee Cornish was the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 12, Kevin Costa 2 for 39 and Jock Hough capped of a great match taking 2 for 13.

Cudal have a couple of new players this season and the return of serial pest all rounder Lee Cornish has them in good stead to do some damage this season. Country were without several quality players in Dan Toynton, Trent and Mark Frazer and Damian Hayes and will no doubt be stronger in weeks to come.

It was a good quality yarding with the usual good runs of young cattle to suit the feeders and trade buyers. There were also some good runs of well finished grown steers and heifers, and there were 220 cows penned which were mostly prime heavy weights. Not all the regular buyers were operating with a couple of southern export processors absent.

Young cattle to the trade were around firm with prime vealers selling to 587c/kg. Prime steer yearlings sold from 446c to 570c, while the prime heifer yearlings sold from 450c to 558c/kg. Feeder steers and heifers were up to 12c/kg cheaper.

Feeder steers sold from 420c to 591c, while the feeder heifers sold from 450c to 570c/kg. Limited numbers of young cattle to the restockers were cheaper on quality with the young steers selling to 630c, and the young heifers to 636c/kg.

Grown steers and heifers were 10c to 14c cheaper, with the prime grown steers selling from 415c to 475c/kg. Prime grown heifers sold from 410c to 480c/kg. Cows were 20c cheaper with the 2 and 3 scores selling from 280c to 369c/kg.

Prime heavy weight cows sold from 368c to 388c to average 378c/kg. Heavy bulls sold to 359c/kg.

It was a pretty good quality yarding with a good selection of trade weight new season lambs along with odd pens of heavy weights. There were also fair numbers of young lambs to suit the restockers and there were a few pens of Merinos yarded. Not all the regular buyers were operating with both northern and southern processors absent.

Trade weight new season lambs were $18 to $25 cheaper selling from $170 to $218/head to average between 815c and 850c/kg cwt. The few trade weight old lambs sold from $145 to $216/ head. Heavy weight lambs were up to $35 cheaper with the new season lambs over 24kg selling from $210 to $240 while the heavy weight old lambs sold from $210 to $265/head. The few Merino lambs were $15 to $22 cheaper with trade weights selling from $146 to $190/head. Restocker lambs were $7 to $11 cheaper selling from $120 to $191 while the feeders paid from $183 to $194/head.

Hoggets sold to $155/head.

There were some very good sheep along with odd pens of plainer light weight sheep in a mixed yarding of mutton where most grades were $13 to $15/head dearer. Merino ewes sold from $112 to $153 while crossbred ewes sold from $100 to $210/head. Merino wethers sold from $140 to $190/head. The restockers paid $132 for Merino ewes and $220/head for six tooth and fresh full mouth first cross ewes.

Magpie stalwarts Brett Johnson and Greg Pringle about to head out to field against Lyndhurst at Lyndhurst on Saturday. Both made significant contributions in Magpies win over Lyndhurst Johnson taking 4 for 10 bowling and Pringle scoring 22 with the bat and taking 2 catches.The pair have been playing for Magpies for over 45 years and have no plans to retire.
