New push for Bank St tree change - Mag survey Pg4 Fire Fighters Calendar boys and A Current Affair come to town

On Monday, Rural Aid / Buy a Bale together with half a dozen boys from the Australian Firefighters Calendar descended on Cumnock to deliver 686 hay bales to around 38 drought stricken farmers. Channel 9’s A Current Affair crew came along to cover the story.

Later they descended on Molong with the Fire Fighters shouting beers at the Telegraph and Freemasons Hotel.

Molong Country Woman’s Association members held a special meeting, complete with tea and scones, for the benefit of the Current Affair team keen to portray life in these parts.

In Brief Printhie to open new cellar door and restaurant The Swift family received confirmation this week that plans to open a cellar door and restaurant 7-kilometres from the Orange CBD had been approved by Cabonne Council.

From next year, the winemakers aim to transfer their tasting room to their ‘Millwood’ property at Nashdale.

In addition to moving the cellar door from its current location in Molong, the family plan to open a restaurant which will be open seven days a week.

Cabonne Council approved the final planning application at a meeting on Tuesday.

Better Rail coming to Molong?

“I’m very excited that the Australian Government is providing $8 million to fund a business case for faster rail between Sydney and Parkes via Lithgow, Bathurst and Orange,” Member for Calare, Andrew Gee recently confirmed.

It relates to the Australian Governments interest in Faster Rail upgrades to the Main Western Line (Lithgow, Orange to Parkes) to speed up passenger traffic for decentralisation , tourism etc as well as freight. This

initiative also relates to the desire to re-open the Molong Railway Station.

The Orange Rail Action Group advised that the new Regional Fleet will be commissioned for NSW from 2023 onwards.

New schedules will develop for passenger trains. It is possible that one or more daily passenger trains ( 6 cars each) will travel Sydney - Orange and there split :- with 3 cars going to Molong-Parkes and the other 3 will go to Wellington-Dubbo (and back again) This is a scenario that ORAG will work towards over the next few years.

Dubbo district silo art could become a reality if money can be found

Drab silos across the district could soon be transformed into wonderful works of art if the local council secures grant funding.

The Wellington Times reports Dubbo Regional Councillor Dayne Gumley said sprucing up silos could lead to tourists staying longer and spending more money in the region.

He called on Dubbo Regional Council to find funding for silo art at the June council meeting.

“If we do get our way and we can get some funds for this silo art we’re likely to create extra interest in the area,” Cr Gumley said.

Silos and water tower murals have popped up across Australia in recent years and proved popular with communities, he said.

“Our area needs to get on board and attract as many people as it can so they can come here and enjoy what we have to offer,” Cr Gumley said.

Essential job cuts? Essential profit margins!

Shooters Fishers and Farmers’ Member for Orange Philip Donato MP today, 3rd July 2019, responded to reports received yesterday that Essential Energy will cut 182 jobs across New South Wales by 30th August.

“Rural and Regional New South Wales already suffers from diminishing services, now country communities are being further disadvantaged with Essential Energy reportedly cutting 182 jobs across the State by August 30th.” Said Mr Donato.

“My office routinely receives calls from constituents concerning Essential Energy service issues, and these job cuts will only worsen delivery of this service.

“While this decision will almost certainly result in decreased and delayed service for our country communities, let’s not forget there are 182 families that now face immediate insecurity and uncertainty in their futures.

“Essential Energy are reported to have cited the reason for these job cuts as a business need due to Australian Energy Regulator funding. At the end of the day, 182 workers from country communities will be sacrificed so that profit margins remain high and service outlays remain low.

“As we’ve seen over the past week, the Deputy Premier talks a big talk about standing up to his Liberal bosses – now is his opportunity. He should stand with me on condemning the Government for allowing this to happen.

“The truth is that the Nats have a proven track record in slashing electricity jobs in the bush, and they’re as equal in blame as their Liberal masters in turning their backs on the people of the bush.” Mr Donato said.

Bank St trees - Community to be surveyed The Molong Advancement Group is conducting a commmunity survey seeking input from Molong and District to determine whether it should recommend to Cabonne Council that the Liquidambar trees in Bank Street Molong be removed and replaced by a more appropriate and attractive advanced tree species.

The main issue is the danger posed by seed pods produced and shed by the trees.

Survey sheets will be distributed to Molong housholds asking you to indicate your view on removal and replacement (Yes or No) and hand it in to the Molong Pharmacy, Molong Post Office or post MAG PO Box 263 Molong.

The dreaded seed pods from the Bank St trees, tripping people up, filling the drains and sweeping seeds into the waterways.

Here we go again !

Every year it’s the same. For weeks on end the trees drop their seed pods onto Bank Street.

Faster than anyone can clean them up.

Of all the magnificent street trees in the world Molong has been stuck with this one.

The argument has been going on for years.

Back in April 2010 Les Dean, who has knowledge and experience in these things wrote in his Express column...

“Like the other, great tree, wrong species in the wrong place. I have great admiration for the Molong Beautification Committee for its work around town, especially the entrances into town.

The establishment of planting boxes, trees and surrounding kerbs in the main street several years ago was an admirable project.

I am reluctant to forward criticism, however the selection of Liquidambar as their street tree has two major problems. Liquidambar can grow to a height of 50 m, with a root system to match.

They are renowned for seeking water, targeting pipes containing sewer and town water, and have large feeder roots hat expand and lift kerbs, footpaths, roadways and foundations.

A more immediate danger however is their reputation for causing falls, especially but not only to the elderly.

A few years ago, a similar row of liquidambar in front of the local RSL Club were removed due to patrons slipping on their hard golf ball sized seed pods. These are produced in profusion, drop to the ground over a long period in winter and wait on the hard surface for the unwary to alight from their vehicle and put a foot wrong. As a member of the hardworking team of town maintenance staff on Council a few years ago, I suggested an appropriate transplant of these trees to a suitable

Road upgrades underpin Cabonne’s $21.9M capital works program A $21.9 million capital works program is the centrepiece of Cabonne Council’s 2019-2020 Budget, which was adopted this week.

In keeping with Cabonne’s commitment to road safety, the capital works program is underpinned by almost $14m of roadworks and a further $2.6m to construct two new bridges.

Cabonne Mayor Kevin Beatty said improving the safety of all road users was Cabonne Council’s highest priority.

“Providing safe, efficient and well maintained roads and bridges, particularly infrastructure which helps transport agricultural goods to and from market, is a key component of Cabonne’s Community Strategic Plan,” Cr Beatty said.

Major road safety upgrades will be undertaken throughout the Shire,

including Packham Way between Manildra and Molong; Cargo Road; Davys Plain Road between Cudal and Cargo; and Vittoria Road.

More than $1m will be spent on resealing rural roads, almost $1m will go towards heavy patching and $900,000 will be spent on resheeting gravel roads.

St Germains Bridge on Bocobra Road near Manildra and Bangaroo Bridge over the Belubula River near Canowindra will be replaced following partial funding from the Federal Government.

Almost $500,000 will be spent on footpaths and a further $144,000 on swimming pool upgrades in Cabonne villages.

“In framing this budget, the council has ensured that all existing services will be maintained at existing levels and no services are discontinued,” Cr Beatty said.

NSW Nationals – on the brink?

Shooters Fishers and Farmers’ Member for Orange Philip Donato MP today, 28th June 2019, responded to today’s Sydney Morning Herald article in which Deputy Premier John Barilaro suggests he will stand up to the Liberal Party and no longer allow regions to suffer or be treated like second-class citizens.

“It’s unfortunate it took the loss of three key country seats for the Deputy Premier to finally recognise the people of the bush have had enough of being neglected and treated as second-class citizens.”

Said, Mr Donato.

“The Deputy Premier is facing the possibility of a National Party extinction in this state, and only now with the realisation of his party’s demise does he suggest he will stand-up to his Liberal Party masters.”

“If the Deputy Premier is serious about standing-up to his Liberal masters and ensuring the people of regional New South Wales aren’t treated as second-class citizens, he will march into the Liberal Health Minister’s office and demand the immediate reopening of Parkes Hospital’s maternity unit and continued delivery of level 3 birthing.

“If he is fair dinkum, Mr Barilaro will respond to Orange’s 10,000 petitioners by insisting Liberal’s Transport Minister improve passenger rail services for the Central West and stable the second Bathurst Bullet in Orange.

My nomination for the Young Pioneer of the Year (if there really was such an award)

Sure, his Dad is a wizard brewing up cauldrons of award winning beers. Sure the malting barley is grown onsite and it’s 100% rainwater that gives each sip the cleanest finish.

But while Pete at Pioneer is rewriting the manual for farm to table brewing in Australia, his son Andy might just be the most passionate eight year old to ever burn the bejeezus out of a marshmallow in the name of Ultimate Host.

Which is how I meet Andy on a rare afternoon that the Pioneer Brewing taphouse – behind his own house – opens its doors to visitors between Cargo and Cudal. The burnt ball of sugar somehow perfectly complemented the Vienna Lager I was sampling and served as an opener to Andy’s encyclopaedic knowledge about the independent beer world his Dad has quickly become a leader in.

“Yes, we are a farm and yes, we brew beer and yes we love beer,” explains Pete as one of just five farm based breweries in Australia. And in the wine loving food basket that is Cabonne?

Pioneer are the actual pioneers of this movement, the only brewery in NSW growing and brewing and returning the spent grain to the land by way of sheep feed. Easy to see why Andy is so enamoured by the operation. Andy and the rest of our

beer drinking nation, which have awarded consecutive places to two Pioneer brews at the Australian International Beer Awards and five bronzes at the Independent Aussie awards.

These include both best beer as well as best label. I reckon the kids have a say in choosing the Pantone colours that make these cans pop.

No doubt one day Andy will be finding his own inspiration in the seasons and brewing up his own batch of award winning beers. Or maybe he’ll travel the world and become an engineer. This kid has heaps of time to learn and experiment and maybe even distil the essence of burnt marshmallow into a can of fizz. I’d keep the alcohol content to a zero for now, there’s a lot of fermenting that can happen in 10 years.

We often hear about some rather odd ‘gossip’ circulating.

Which made me wonder about “what is the meaning of the word ‘gossip’?

Googling Last week, one of Molong’s hardest working and community spirited women raised on facebook her concerns about ‘information? networking? gossip? spreading about her life.

Which made me search for the word ‘gossip’ what does it mean?

Could it be casual networking amongst friends? Items of concern? Conspiracy theories?

Or, something that sets in during winter months when we all snuggle in deeper to our warm lounges and doonas - and end up with boredom, winter boredom ... good old cabin fever?

Calling on my trusty Google friend ...who claims Gossip is idle talk or rumor, especially about the personal or private affairs of others; the act is also known as dishing or tattling.

Gossip has been researched in terms of its origins in evolutionary psychology, which has found gossip to be an important means for people to monitor cooperative reputations and so maintain widespread indirect reciprocity.

Indirect reciprocity is a social interaction in which one actor helps another and is then benefited by a third party. Gossip has also been identified

by Robin Dunbar, an evolutionary biologist, as aiding social bonding in large groups.

OMG - is this really the interpretation people have of good old ‘goss’ - particularly what Robin Dunbar believes is “aiding social bonding in large groups.”

Could it be that even the President of the United States, Donald Trump ‘gossips’ on Twitter each and every day? Well, that’s definitely not a good example for Preso to set.

Then again, one has to wonder ... could it be that there is ‘good, bad’, truthful, untruthful, made up gossip?

Well, some will say that the most powerful man in the world - the American President - is a gossip? For it is said that he relays ‘untruths’. ‘ Then there’s the Aussi Prime Minister, ScoMo - who the Saturday paper suggests knew what he was doing when he placed his arm around Malcolm Turnbull minutes before Mal resigned.

We now read that the jovial Christian, ScoMo had in place other plans with his colleagues.

Which part of the story is ‘gossip’. Well, it was said on that fateful day that ScoMo was purely pretending to be Mal’s best friend. He wasn’t.

Tricky. So, from Canberra/media gossip - we now find that this gossip was in fact true. Good or bad gossip. I reckon this kind of skullduggery is worth gossiping about.

Gossip? Networking? Good? Bad? Each and every day we wake up to news ... news ... and if one reads ‘those magazines’ - we would have to wonder - is this gossip, networking, lies, truth. Well, the headlines might well represent ‘gossip’ ... the stories inside are quite different. Still, one has to ask the question “who cares”.

Still, when sitting in a dr’s surgery or waiting for a haircut ... this gossip is quite ... well, more interesting than the waiting. And, so we read on ... and forget what we read almost immediately.

Boring!!

I reckon in a small town like Molong with so many things to achieve ... we should stay focussed on ... achieving ... helping each other ...and offering support - positive support to each other.

Would that make us different from the rest? I reckon it will.

In the meantime ... how about we knit scarves for our ghostly and sad looking trees in Bank Street?

How about everyone helps me with the Molong Railway Station building?

Like to be involved in the Silos art project?

Come to art? Bake cakes for street stalls.

Learn something new everyday.

Seek new knowledge and skills?

And, let’s figure out how we can help those who have fallen ... or need help.

At the end of the day - I reckon that’s a better way.

Kerry Hicks at Molong Real Estate (Bank Street) currently has advertised one of the town’s social history ‘gems’.

In fact, in past times, - Kerry and her brothers and their little friends probably sat in this fabulous old picture theatre building for Saturday Matinees - where Mr. Carter projected the latest films onto the big white screen.

Then again, Kerry’s parents, Tom Dean and ..... McKuen (both grew up in Molong) probably did the same at their age when movies featuring John Wayne, Rock Hudson, Elvis Presley filled the theatre with both residents and visitors from near and far.

Saturday afternoon Matinee joined with Friday and Saturday night crowds - with kids sitting in the cheaper downstairs seats, young lovers cuddling out of sight at the very top of the ‘upstairs’, the better dressed seated in the unique Juliette balcony ... and the roly poly orange Jaffa or two (or whole packet) eventually jumping down the stairs one by one. An icy home-made lemon, orange or pineapple squash from the Cassimaty family at the Pantheon Cafe (located between the Telegraph Hotel and

Wild’s Pharmacy revived many a sleepy head in what was one of the hottest buildings in town. Mrs Burke and then Joan and Peter McFarlane at the Oasis Cafe sold many an ice-cream or a lolly to the movie gatherers.

When TV came to town in the 1960’s - along with picture theatres across the country - the Molong Picture Theatre succumbed to the times and eventually closed dueto lack of customers.

Norm Bloomfield, the owner of the Molong Express newspaper, with his son, Rodney, revamped the 1920’s built ‘fleas and itches’ building in the 1970’s to include squash courts, competitions, pinball machines and other attractive things for kids to do.

The building was then sold to an outside investor who apparently, had hoped to turn it into a theatre/ restaurant. Unfortunately, this great idea never got off the ground. Why?

Investor/Developer Needed: What are the opportunities?

1. Some would be happy to see the squash courts back and competition starting again.

2. Some would be simply happy to see the doors open again as an auction centre or youth centre meeting place.

3. Others would like to see shared space.

Almost 11 years ago, on September 4th, 2008, the Federal Government paid the Molong Express and other newspapers to run a quarter-page advertisement warning of the dangers posed by a changing climate. Did anyone notice? Well at the risk of stating the bleeding obvious, no, or very few of us it would seem.

Here in Australia the drought bites deeper into the Eastern States and farmers are telling their elected representatives that climate change is now a climate emergency. Towns everywhere are running out of water and many dams are at critical level or as good as empty.

And what is to be the first focus of this, our 46th Parliament? Tax cuts and religious freedom.

Meanwhile we are preparing a bid to hold an Olympic Games in sub-tropical Queensland in 2032!

It would seem that those who claim

to be concerned for our country's future are actually blind to the world around them.

This week, I'd like to do something a little different and present to you a snapshot of the climate emergency as it is affecting the wider world.

To do so, I've drawn on a variety of international news sources and where appropriate have named them accordingly.

Fire and floods in Alaska On July 1st, Reuters Newsagency correspondent Yereth Rosen reported on the wild fires and floods that are plaguing Alaska.

Record and near-record temperatures have blanketed most of the USA's most northerly state from the Canada border in the west to the Bering Sea in the east. June's record temperatures followed the State's warmest-ever spring.

A total of 354 wildfires were burning through almost 179,362 ha of the State last weekend.

At the other end of the spectrum, the abnormally high temperatures have seen runoff from rapidly melting glaciers and snowfields swell rivers that are now threatening to flood much of central Alaska.

Accelerated thawing of Canada’s permafrost signals heightening of climate crisis Permafrost is a layer of soil just below the surface “topsoil” that stays permanently frozen, while the thinner layer of soil above it alternately freezes and thaws with

the seasons.

The upper layer of permafrost contains large amounts of vegetable matter that, if it thaws, releases methane which then becomes a major contributor to climate heating.

Permafrost covers 22 per cent of the Northen Hemisphere’s land mass, and the effect of its thawing on global heating will be profound.

On June 19 this year, the Guardian’s environment pages carried a report by Reuters outlining the results of an expedition to a

Canadian permafrost study site that had last been visited in 2016.

According to the scientists involved, the changes in just three years were “amazing”. The team from the University of Alaska Fairbanks were astounded to see how a series of unusually hot summers had destabilised the upper layers of giant ice blocks that had been frozen for millennia.

According to the report, changes to the permafrost in some areas are now occurring 70 years earlier than first predicted.

Unstable permafrost could release vast quantities of heat-trapping gases, unleashing a feedback loop that would fuel even faster temperature rises.

Scientists warn that sharply higher temperatures would devastate the global south and threaten the viability of industrial civilisation in the northern hemisphere.

Arctic heatwave and record carbon levels Writing in The Washington Post of May 15th, Jason Samenow noted that: “…Near the entrance to the Arctic Ocean in northwest Russia [at Arkhangelsk], the temperature surged to 84 degrees Fahrenheit (29 Celsius). Meanwhile, the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere eclipsed 415 parts per million for the first time in human history.”

That was 30°C higher than the regional average for that time of year.

Samenow wrote that “Many locations in Russia, from the Kazakhstan border to the White Sea, set record-high temperatures over the weekend, some 30 to 40 degrees (around 20 Celsius) above average.”

In Greenland the ice sheet’s melt season began about a month early and for the Arctic overall, the extent of sea ice has hovered near a record low for weeks.

Meanwhile, wrote Samenow, “… carbon dioxide measurement of 415 parts per million at Hawaii’s Mauna Loa Observatory is the highest in at least 800,000 years and probably over 3 million years. Carbon dioxide levels have risen by nearly 50 percent since the Industrial Revolution.”

The costs of climate change Insurance It is estimated that the annual average cost of damage from extreme weather and climate hazards to properties will rise to $85 billion in 2030.

By 2030, about 1 in every 19 properties could have effectively unaffordable insurance premiums.

Property Values When considering lending for mortgages, banks look carefully at the annual costs of the borrower, including the cost of insurance.

Therefore, banks in principle will have to lend less for houses with higher insurance costs. Thus, for two equivalent homes, the one that is more exposed and vulnerable to extreme weather impacts is expected to decrease in value compared to less affected properties.

There is some evidence that climate change is already altering property values in parts of the United States, where higher elevation properties are essentially worth more now, and increasingly will be worth more in the future.

By email Please find below a statement from Minister for Skills and Tertiary Education Dr. Geoff Lee in response to Frank Povah’s column (27 June, 2019): “Prue Car has got it wrong on TAFE NSW yet again. She’s either being deliberately misleading or just simply doesn’t understand TAFE NSW. This year’s Budget committed $1.85 billion to TAFE NSW, an increase of 3.1% (in dollar terms, this is $55.6 million).

Additionally, there is a $137.2 million allocation for 2019-20 as part of a commitment to TAFE NSW capital works projects across the state.

The NSW Government is also delivering an $80 million new TAFE NSW super campus in Western Sydney along with $61.7 million for eight additional Connected Learning Centres across regional and rural NSW. We’re committed to TAFE NSW, as our funding allocations prove.

I note Labor’s election commitment was to provide TAFE NSW 70% of the state’s vocational education and training budget, which is less than the 80% currently being delivered by this NSW Government.”

sheep It was another good quality yarding, with some very good runs of good trade lambs, along with a few pens of heavy weights.

All the regular buyers were in attendance and operating, along with the return of a southern export processor who had been shut for maintenance.

Light weight lambs to the processors were $8 dearer. Trade lambs were $4 to $8 cheaper, Heavy weight lambs were firm. Lambs to the feeders were dearer, Hoggets sold to $220/head.

It was a mixed yarding of sheep where the light and medium weight sheep were $4 to $7/head dearer and heavy weight sheep were close to firm. 2 score ewes sold from $54 to $115, while the better 3 and 4 scores made from $126 to $245 for Merinos and $237/head for crossbreds.

Merino wethers reached $150/head.

Carcase prices for the better sheep received from 570c to 620c/kg cwt.

There were a few pens of well finished grown steers and heifers and there was not the number of cows compared to previous sales. A full field of buyers were in attendance and operating in a reasonably solid market.

Molong Bulls After a cracker of a first home game clash against Eugowra in April (Molong winning 46-22 with 3 men down for half the game) the Bulls rubbed it in against an obviously changed Eugowra side last Sunday winning by a massive 104 to 4.

Gracious Bulls President, Jenny Barrow posted "Sadly all clubs at some point go through hard times. Hang in there Eugowra, the score was not a true reflection of how you played the game.

You guys never gave up right up to the final whistle."

Manildra Rhinos It was kids day at Manildra last Sunday complete with a lolly drop from a light plane showering thousands of goodies onto the field.

A good day was had by all despite the first grade upset with the Rhinos going down 40-6 against Canowindra.

In Youth League the Rhinos 24 overcame Cargo 18 and in League Tag the Rhinos 16 beat Canowindra 10.

Next Sunday the First Grade are off to Grenfell Saturday 27 July is Ladies Day.

MOLONG WOMEN'S BOWLS President Jan Cornish's Presidents Day was held on 26 June with 14 teams on the green. A great day for Jan with visitors from Newtead, Blayney, Orange City, Magellan, Manildra, Parkes, Millthorpe, and Canowindra. Manildra were winners on the day with Parkes runners up.

Last Saturday and Sunday 22 teams came for our Mixed Pairs Tournament. we welcomed teams from Molong, Mudgee, blayney, millthorpe, Grenfell, Newstead, country Club, Parkes, West Wyalong, Canowindra, Majellan, Young, Condobolin and Yeoval for a great weekend.

Hazel, Janelle 7 Melissa thank everyone for their support - either playing or sponsoring our raffles, street stall & Krispy Kremes.

The first half had a try being scored at roughly five minute intervals. In order, it was centre Zac White, followed by number 8 Jordan Packham, then White again ,then replacement front rower Knox Bunting.

Tyler Ginn kept it in the front row club with the next, followed by tries to centre Kyle Travis, substitute forward Ross Cary and finally winger Stuart Hobbs scoring the eighth try of the half on the bell.

Halfback Mitch Brown converted them all except the last, which was from the sideline.

The strong wind at their backs had assisted the Magpies in playing the game pretty much in Canowindra’s quarter, with the big boot of five eight Michael Thompson getting them back into the try zone whenever they found themselves in their own half.

With a 54-0 half time score, the century looked a possibility, but Molong coach Dean Butler urged his charges to keep their structure and refrain from going for

glory.

To Canowindra’s credit, they rallied somewhat in the second half and tried to take similar advantage of the strong breeze. They actually scored the first try after the break just five minutes in and were able to convert.

It was pretty much Molong from there on in, with another four tries scored – two to an unrecognisable fullback Woody Mann, who gained an extra yard without his long hair, while White scored his third and Hugh Westcott also crossed after coming off the bench. Brown again converted all but one giving him an impressive 10 from 12 for the day.

Whilst most of the tries were scored by the backs, it was good to see the forwards featuring heavily in the match awards, as they had laid a very solid platform and had very much stuck to the game plan.

Hooker Jack Whalan received the Komatsu Player’s Player as well as one Freemason’s Best & Fairest point, while Tyler Ginn received the three points and Mitch Brown two.

The season only gets tougher from here, with the always physical Yeoval travelling to Molong for the annual ladies day, which is also a white ribbon fundraiser.

A big thank you to Amanda Fowler for all her efforts organising our Movie Night fundraiser. Molong Hockey Club had a cinema all to ourselves to watch Toy Story 4. It was great to see such a large number of MHC people all together. Thank you to all the families at supported this event and speaking to many families everyone had a wonderful time.

MOLONG GOLF Last Wednesday 6 ladies teed off for a 9 hole Stableford, which Kerry Oates won with 17 points. We were then joined by two others for lunch at Sweetness Lolly Shop.

Next Wednesday 10th July we will be playing an 18 hole stableford 8.30 for 9.00 tee off. ************************ Last Sunday we had a two person Ambrose. Only six played.
