It’s been a number of years since Molong has been able to field a team in the Woodbridge Cup Rugby League competition.

However, the 2019 season heralds the comeback of the Mighty Bulls who played their first game of the competition at Condobolin last weekend returning home with a 40-32 win in what has been described as an exciting match from the start to the final siren.

Regional Roads Minister Paul Toole wants 100km/h highway between Lithgow and Penrith The Blayney Chronicle reports the state's new Regional Roads and Transport Minister wants to see 100km/h stretches of highway from Lithgow to Penrith to dramatically cut travel times between Bathurst and Sydney.

Bathurst MP Paul Toole will cap a big 10 days on Tuesday when he is officially sworn in to the new portfolio, the first time roads and transport ministries have been split into separate regional and metropolitan portfolios.

FEDERAL BUDGET

$16 Million secured for long-awaited crossing at Dixons Long Point After 160 years, $16 million has been secured to deliver a bridge across the Macquarie River at Dixons Long Point along with paving of the road.

The funding will be delivered through the Federal Government’s Roads of Strategic Importance initiative.

Federal Member for Calare Andrew Gee said the upgraded crossing will deliver a wide range of benefits to Calare and NSW, not only opening up the entire Central West to tourism, but also better connecting the communities of Mudgee, Orange and Bathurst.

“The late Sir Charles Cutler, who served his country with distinction in World War II, as Deputy Premier and also Member for Orange was a strong advocate of this project. His vision

can now become reality,” Mr Gee said.

“The naysayers said that it could never be done and that it wouldn’t happen. Indeed, it was often referred to as the Holy Grail of unfinished road projects.

“While it’s taken some time, I’m absolutely delighted to have finally delivered this project for the communities of the Central West.”

Neil Cutler, son of the late Sir Charles Cutler, welcomed the announcement.

“In his role as Member for Orange and Deputy Premier of NSW, Dad was one of the earliest advocates for this crossing at Dixons Long Point,” Mr Cutler said.

“I’m sure he would be very pleased to see the region continuing to progress.”

$18M for world-class health research institute in Orange

The Liberal National Government will invest $18 million to develop a world-class rural health and medical research facility that will support the needs of rural communities through-out Australia.

Located in Orange, the construction of the new Institute for Regional, Rural and Remote Health and Medical Research will bring to the community the countries best and brightest researchers in the field of rural health.

The institute will focus on addressing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health inequity, supporting ageing and aged care,

improving child health, promoting consumerdriven rural health research, building clinical research capacity, and improving health service delivery.

Minister for Health, Greg Hunt said the institute will underpin a new direction in rural health research, ensuring that rural health solutions are located in rural locations involving rural people. “The Government is proud to support this world-class facility in one of NSW’s fastest growing regional cities,” Minister Hunt said.

Another federal department moves to Orange Regional Programs Branch relocates from Canberra bringing 25 jobs

Federal Member for Calare Andrew Gee has welcomed the Budget 2019-20 announcement that 25 new positions are on their way to the Central West under the Federal Government’s Decentralisation Agenda.

Mr Gee said the Decentralisation Agenda will relocate the Regional Programs Branch of the Department of Infrastructure, Regional Development and Cities (DIRDC) from Canberra to Orange. The DIRDC is responsible for the

design and implementation of the Australian Government’s infrastructure, transport and regional development policies and programs.

This includes the delivery of a number including the Building Better Regions Fund and Community Development Grants program.

“This announcement builds on the 25-30 jobs already delivered through the establishment of the Regional Investment Corporation in Orange.

Yes, it's really happening!

Every now and then the Express formalises the questions/requests we receive here from readers which we then send on to Cabonne Council - or other levels of government/agencies etc. As we receive responses we will print them in this column. Questions received so far........

1. Upgrade of the Bank Street toilets. What is the programmed date of commencement / completion of these works? Will Council pay for extra cleaning i.e.

7 day cleaning operation – with additional cleaning during school holidays and events in Bank Street?.

2. Council Operated Public Toilets: Where can disabled residents gain (purchase) the universal MLAK key which we understand opens the locked public toilet facilities across Australia (including the one in Bank Street)?

3. Molong Rec. toilets – when are these programmed for upgrade?

Will Council provide 7 day cleaning to this facility to cover weekends and additional day cleaning when events/football matches are held?

4. Entrances/Signage to Molong – Molong Traders sent in a response to this question asked by Council sometime last year. What has happened to this project? Has it been funded – or is it to be part of CC’s works programs budget?

5. Molong Walking/Cycle Trail.

What is happening with this trail from Rec. grounds past pool – creek – adjacent to Hill and Watson Streets – ‘Closed’ signs remain – but nothing appears to be happening?

The unslightly fence and overgrown weeds remain. Has this remediation program been signed off by EPA? Why is the fence securing the site remaining? We understand the tank frame was painted some years

ago and is now stored in Council yards somewhere? Where? When will the frame be returned to the site and the promised History Park be established on this site?

7. Shields Lane. Arguments are continuing about who can park where and the absence of footpaths.

What is Cabonne Council doing about the problem?

8. Fluoride in Molong Water Supply: Has fluoride been added to MWS as directed by NSW Health some 2+ years ago?

9. Molong Creek cleaning program : When will Council be meeting their promise to keep the Molong Creek clear to help floodwaters pass through town?

10. Molong Community Centre: What is the date for the commencement/completion of this project?

11. Pedestrian Crossing, opposite Molong Central School (cnr Edward and Wellington Streets). Express and concerned citizens, in a recent article, spoke about the danger of this crossing - and students and families accessing the MCS. What is Council able to do about this longtime safety problem?

12. Intersection of Edward and Hill Street (Mitchell Highway) residents and Express have asked Cabonne Council help in solving this growing safety problem?

13. Molong Showgrounds Express story. What is Council proposing to do to resolve the problem of the two condemned pavilion buildings?

Cabonne Councillors Paul Mullins and Jamie Jones proud to announce the long overdue refurbishment of the Bank Street public toilets. "It's been a long-time coming" said the Councillors. "Molong deserves better."

The long-time call by local residents, travellers and tourists for something to be done about the dreadful state of the Bank Street public toilets has finally been heard by Cabonne Council.

Thanks to the efforts of Cabonne Councillors Jamie Jones and Paul Mullins with the support of Mayor Kevin Beatty and other Councillors.

Council originally programmed a paltry $30,000 to upgrade the facility - built 39 years ago through the efforts of Molong Apex Club members.

"Not enough" said Cr. Mullins at a recent council meeting. "It cost me that much to upgrade my home bathroom."

"Paul and I both spoke to the motion asking

Council to reconsider both the allocation and the importance of these toilets to local residents, district shoppers, tourists and visitors" said Jamie.

The two councillors successfully moved a motion that the allocation be increased to $140,000 to ensure a proper upgrade to the ageing facility. The motion was carried.

The works will include partial demolition, tiling of floors and walls, new partitions, rendering, painting, new awning, new screens, new seating, fixtures and provision of portable toilets during the construction phase.

With Orange’s water supplies slipping below 40% of capacity, the city’s water restrictions will move to Level 4 from Saturday (2 April).

The main changes in the switch from Level 3 to Level 4 are: • No watering lawns. Gardens only to be watered.

• Micro-sprays and soaker hoses can still be used, but the current odds and evens watering system (3 hours morning and 3 hours evening,

every other day) is replaced with 2 hours a day (evening only 4pm-6pm) on two days a week (Wed and Sun) • During those two periods, hand-held hoses with a trigger-nozzle limited to half an hour • Suggested 5 minute time-limits on showers “The council was keen to balance the need for us all to seriously take the need to save water, against the practicalities for groups such as the elderly,” Cr Reg Kidd said.

Anyone for Carp and Chips?

“No thanks” said these three young ones as they looked over the slimy carp from the Molong Creek caught during the first day of the Telegraph Hotel Fishing Club’s annual Carp Fishing weekend. “We only eat flathead without the bones.”

Sticking to the fish and chips menu at the Telegraph Hotel - we can hardly blame the food preferences of these young Aussie country boys. Then again, in Asian countries local kids would be lining up for a feed of carp - a delicacy to them.

Fishing for carp last weekend - some of the local kids started asking the question ... what’s wrong with them? Well, they taste muddy - not very attractive in looks - and they’re a nuisance. There’s more ...Read on ...

Carp were introduced into Australia both deliberately, in an attempt to imitate the European environment, and accidentally, through the escape of ornamental or aquaculture fish.

Carp (Cyprinus carpio) originated in China and spread throughout Asia and Europe as an ornamental and aquaculture species. In the Chinese culture - Carp are a highly respected food source and since they can jump very high out of the water, they are often pictured jumping over gates, symbolizing a jump in status or wealth.

Australians resist eating carp due a perception that they are “junk” fish. Some say they have a muddy flavour, or that they are too bony. Neither of these issues stop people in Europe, the Middle East and Asia from eating carp, where they are a common part of the diet.

However, Australian native fish have been seriously

impacted by carp. The common carp is a true bottom feeder, uprooting and disturbing submerged vegetarion which in turn alters the waterways’ natural environments. The turbidity created by carp reduces the native fish ability to hunt and thrive. Carp can eat a herbivorous diet of aquatic plants, but prefer to scavenge the bottom for insects, crustaceans (including zooplankton), yabbies and worms. They are also found in brackish lower reaches of some rivers and coastal lakes. Changes to water flows, declining water quality and other changes to river habitats over the past few decades have negatively affected many native fish while favouring carp.

Whilst carp rarely eat fish, they do consume fish eggs and larvae and disturb native fish breeding sites.

Adult carp have no natural predators so they can live a long life of up to 20 years with the females laying up to 300,000 eggs during that time.

Cooking Carp: Fresh carp need be cooked as soon as possible. Sometimes, you can bring a hooked fish home alive, which is the freshest way to cook and eat fish. If you can obtain a live carp and want to cook it whole, it is best if you let it live in a big tub of fresh water for several days to clean out the “mud vein” and have a better-tasting fish. Dissolve one teaspoon of salt in the tub of water every day to help the process. Do not feed the carp.

Prepare carp for cleaning and cooking as with any other kind of fish. However, a better cooked flavour is achieved if the mud vein is removed by making a v-cut on either side of the dark, lateral line and remove the meat and vein running along it.

Cooking carp is easy. Heat the oven to 350 F - butter an 8 by 8-inch baking dish and place the carp fillets. Cover with a layer of lemon slices to keep the fish moist whilst cooking. This also adds to the flavour of the carp.

In addition to boiled potatoes with parsley and melted butter, you could add spinach or wilted chard to the dinner for a nice mixture of tastes and textures.

Be aware that carp fillets still have one layer of pin bones (​gräten) in them. You could pull them out with tweezers before cooking or remove them while eating.

When I presented small business training programs on behalf of the Victorian Government and later, ACT Government, I often used this slide at the start and end of my presentations to let new and established small biz owners know that “it would not be easy”. ] The majority of small business owners/ operators in Molong and surrounding Cabonne towns and villages/farnlands etc will agree, I am sure.

But once committed to the long hours, little return for the time, effort and investment ... it is a matter of “never, give up”. When the season, drought, government red tape, taxes etc, fewer customers and competition - make us wonder “what the heck are we doing here” - a strong belief in self and what we are doing takes over. Thankfully, because the majority of small business that you, I and others walk through the doors of would be shut, closed ... and we would instead, enter the world of government support. if we all gave up! Yes, the age pension for we 65 year olds would provide a much better return.

But, small business owners across the country hang in there - for a lot of reasons. Yes, we like being our own boss. Yes, we do like the freedom of starting and finishing - opening and closing when we please. Taking the risk and buying in stock that we gamble on - ‘will it sell, will we make a profit to buy more stock, will we end up selling the leftovers on e-bay or offering at the front of shops on ‘Sale’ tables’?

Well, that’s the gamble. For the farming and grazing community it’s a heck of a lot harder what will the weather bring - do I sell/buy stock, plant crops, invest in new machinery etc. etc.

My wish for Bank Street and surrounding businesses located in Molong is to see more customers as is seen in other country towns.

When I look around town I see a huge number of people i.e. staff, managers, workers - i.e. potential customers - at the schools, pre-schools, childcare, medical and hospital services, council - some of whom live and shop in Molong; others who do some shopping in Molong but live in Orange etc - others who we never see putting something back into the town where they have found employment.

Whilst traders can’t demand customer support - and should not need to - it would make a remarkable difference if we can encourage those who have employment in Molong (some 150 to 200 people) try to help the town by supporting local shops and local business.

Of course, it’s the local businesses who are generous supporters of fundraisers.

On another note: This week on P.4 I have put together a Q&A for Cabonne Council and relevant other agencies for long-time needs asked for by ratepayers. I’m not criticising Cabonne Council and I do understand that nothing can be achieved unless we work together as Council and community.

However, it’s good to ask questions ... give gentle reminders ... otherwise, we could remain the same - and, that’s no good!

Cumnock Show : Simple Country Pleasures The sun shone on last Saturday’s annual Cumnock Show after much welcomed rain the night before. The wind was cold on the day - but the sight of puddles taking over what had been hard, dry dusty ground brought many a smile to the village and farming community. The topic of conversation was led by “how much (rain) did you get”.

President of the Cumnock Show Committee, David Weston, proudly viewed the

grounds where horses and their riders competed for ribbons, dogs were shown, poultry strutted their stuff in this year’s show theme, Feathered Friends.

Whilst the crowd was down in numbers due to the cold weather, the children still enjoyed the traditional show fun of egg and spoon races, sack racing ... and placing their best art and craft work in the pavilion.

Be at next year’s Cumnock annual show - it’s a fantastic event!

The reformation of the Molong Rugby League Club and the reentry of the Molong Bulls 1st Grade side into the 2019 Woodbridge Cup is good news for town and district.

A new committee has been voted into place led by Jenny Barrow (President), Adam Gersbach (Vice-President), Jo Pearson (Secretary), Kaylene Philpott (Treasurer) with Committee members, Deb. Oates, Jye Barrow, Rachael Geddes, Bree Bald.

Coaches are Todd Barrow (Bulls 1st Grade), Lenny Punch (Bullettes), Mark Thomas (Youth League Under 19's).

But that's about to change with 'loyal to the core' players heading back to support their town.

What’s changed on the Nullabor ?

Frank reports on his current road trip across to Weatern Australia

On my way to Western Australia, my first trip “home” in eleven years. I’ve done the journey many times – the first occasion in an MG “A”, years before the Nullarbor section was sealed – hitchhiked it once, by train twice, and once by bus. But the journey has always enthralled me, and this time has been no different.

A lot has changed of course, not all for the better; many small towns, and some not so small are withering as developments in nearby areas sucks the life from them. Others that once experienced a growth spurt in response to a nearby mineral discovery or some other “economic miracle”, are sinking back into the landscape, casualties of the bust that always follows boom.

But it would be churlish to say that all change has been bad. The main routes linking east and west have changed almost beyond recognition. Despite the huge increases in the numbers of trucks and road trains over the years, the roads are, generally speaking, far safer than they once were – not to mention much easier on both bones and suspension.

Roadhouses and motels have also improved, and as long as one is willing to make allowances for the difficulties – and costs– of obtaining staff and supplies in remote locations, there is not a lot to complain about. Almost without exception, staff are friendly and helpful.

It is also heartening to see the large increase in the numbers of declared reserves and conservation areas. It took a long time for the relevant authorities to learn that areas once considered worthless scrub are biological treasure houses; the Nuytsland Conservation Reserve, one of the world’s biological hotspots, being a great example. I

couldn’t resist a wry smile when I saw that what was once said to be thousands of square kilometres – 16 million hectares give or take – of worthless mallee and scrub country is now proudly and attractively signposted as The Great Western Woodlands.

One thing that does strike travellers aware of the landscape through which they are travelling is the roadside litter. In NSW, Victoria and WA it proliferates; in South Australia it is almost entirely absent, even in the remote regions. And it has been this way almost since 1977, the year in which

the last-mentioned State introduced its container deposit scheme. I can remember visiting the small coastal town of Kingston sometime in the late 90s where, on making some purchases at the local supermarket I was told that because I hadn’t brought a bag with me, it was going to cost me 34 cents for each plastic bag I used. In that respect, SA is a lesson to us all.

I don’t know if anyone reading this will remember that years ago, when container deposits were being proposed elsewhere, one of the giant manufacturers of everything from cola

to water to fruit juice that if the scheme were to be introduced in NSW it would not be able to afford to operate there. I do note that it can still afford to operate in SA. Having lived in Bourke I wasn’t at all surprised by the number of Grey Nomads on the roads, and on the long journey west it soon became obvious that governments at all levels are lagging behind in accommodating them – and other travellers. Rest stops are in many cases inadequate to deal with the numbers using them and tracks into what should be easily accessible scenic attractions close to roads are unsuitable for many types of vehicles.

And rest stops with toilets are few and far between, especially along the Eyre Highway, and what there are were always crowded – even monopolised – by caravans and campervans, making it difficult for anyone travelling in a sedan or SUV. Interstate and intrastate tourism add a not inconsiderable amount to State and Federal coffers and would repay a little more investment in facilities.

This increase in tourism seems to have spurred many towns along the way to do their best to increase their share of trade. I saw towns that even in their glory days would never have boasted more than a few businesses, but had put in much effort to tidy their approaches, and had spruced up empty buildings with bright paint and signs advertising local attractions.

I’m taking a different route on the way back – though I’ll still be going via the Nullarbor – and I’m looking forward to seeing what’s changed, or hasn’t, along the way. Stay warm back there in Molong, and let’s all hope for a decent autumn break.

CTLX sheep and lamb report for 27/3/19

Lamb numbers decreased with agents yarding 4420 Sheep numbers decreased with agents yarding 3200 It was only a fair quality yarding, with limited selection of trade weight lambs and only the odd pen of heavy lambs.

There was a good percentage of light lambs lacking finish. It was a mainly good quality of mutton yarded.

Light weight lambs to the processors were $7 dearer, while trade lambs were $14 to $18 dearer, lambs to restockers were $6 to $12 dearer, and heavy lambs were $14 dearer. Mutton were $10 to $15 dearer.

Young lamb (12.1 to 16kg) - 95 to 130 $/

CTLX cattle market report 2/4/19

Numbers increased with agents yarding 2655. Cows made up the 40% of the yarding as the offload continues. There was a good selection of feeder cattle and trade along with some well finished grown steers and heifers..

Young cattle to the trade were 3c cheaper, feeder steers and heifers were 2c to 15ckg dearer. Young restocker cattle were 15 to 20c dearer, and grown steers & heifers firm. Cows were 3c to 11c dearer.
