Select number 0f Finalists for Molong 2019 Daroo Business Awards residents almost certain to face level 5 water restrictions

A select field of finalists has been announced for the 2019 Cabonne Daroo Business Awards, which showcase the quality and diversity of businesses based in Cabonne Shire.

After record nominations and votes, three finalists have been named in most of the 17 categories.

Awards chairperson Cr Libby Oldham said a smaller venue for the awards dinner in November meant the committee had to limit the number of finalists this year.

“In recent years we’ve had 10 finalists or more in some categories, but this year it is a real achievement to be named as a finalist,” Cr Oldham said.

The winners of this year’s awards will be announced at a gala dinner at Manildra Soldiers Memorial Hall on Friday 1 November 2019, tickets for which will go on sale this week.

Cr Oldham said the Daroos put the spotlight on Cabonne businesses and organisations that demonstrate a commitment to excellence in their service or management.

“The profile of the awards has grown substantially since their inception in 2000 and they are now regarded as one of the major events on the regional business calendar,” she said.

“Competition was stronger than ever this year.”

The awards introduced a new category this year for businesses that have thrived in adversity, particularly during the prolonged drought.

Cr Oldham said that with a limited number of places available this year, tickets to the 2019 awards were sure to be hot property.

“I would advise anyone wishing to attend to purchase their tickets as soon as possible to avoid disappointment,” she said.

“However, with no end to the drought in sight, there will almost certainly be a need for a higher level of restrictions as the weather warms up,” he said.

The Mayor said the Council would be watering only selected parks and reserves with bore and tank water and would use bore water to top up Molong swimming pool before the swimming season starts.

Retail, commercial and industrial businesses have been asked to provide Water Savings Actions Plans to demonstrate where they can use less water in their operations.

When the tougher restrictions come into effect, access may be restricted to the Molong standpipe for people wishing to purchase water to cart to homes on rural properties. However, under the present Central Tablelands Water restrictions, access will be available to Central Tablelands water standpipes in other towns and villages, including Manildra.

In the meantime Orange City Council has started releasing water from Spring Creek Dam to improve water availability ahead of what is predicted to be a dry summer.

The release began Monday 30 September.

Spring Creek Dam is currently sitting at 67.8 per cent (3,050 megalitres) of capacity and Suma Park Dam is at 21.8 per cent (4,140 megalitres). Water will be gradually released from the dam into Gosling Creek to flow into Suma Park Dam over the next month.

Unlike Spring Creek Dam, Suma Park Dam is connected to the Icely Road Water Filtration Plant where water is treated before being used by residents.

Orange Mayor Reg Kidd said the time was right for the transfer.

“We have had some recent rain which has turned the downstream Gosling Creek into a series of ponds and dampened the creek bed,” Cr Reg Kidd said. “This means there will be less transfer losses than if we waited until summer. There will still be some water losses but we

will minimise those losses under the current conditions.”

Orange City Council’s Infrastructure Policy Committee Chair Jeff Whitton said the transfer would result in less evaporation losses over summer.

“We are transferring water from the smaller capacity Spring Creek Dam, which has a larger surface area to a larger capacity Suma Park Dam, which has a smaller surface area,” Cr Jeff Whitton said.

“While it doesn’t increase our total combined storage it will reduce evaporation losses and more importantly connect that water to the Icely Road Water Filtration Plant. That’s a connection we don’t have from Spring Creek.”

When the gradual transfer is complete it is expected Suma Park Dam will reach approximately 29.6 per cent capacity. The release will drop the level in Spring Creek Dam to approximately 35%. The Kinross Wolaroi School, which uses the dam for rowing training, has been advised of the transfer.

With summer approaching and no significant flows into Molong Creek Dam, Molong residents are almost certain to face tougher water restrictions in coming weeks.

Level 4 water restrictions are in place in the town but, unless there is heavy rain in the next fortnight, Level 5 restrictions are expected to be introduced by the end of the month.

Molong Creek Dam is quickly approaching its lowest level since 2001.

Cabonne Council is considering a number of short, medium and long-term initiatives to provide water security for the Shire in the future. The Council supplies water to Molong, Cumnock and Yeoval, while other towns and villages are & supplied by Central Tablelands Water.

Mayor Kevin Beatty said the Council appreciated Molong residents’ endeavours to save water and comply with the current Level 4 restrictions.

Remembering Laurie Ho

Val Mckenzie, in this weeks Cumnock Progress Review, reported that Lawrence (Laurie) Ho passed away on 21st September 2019.

Laurie was well known and loved by many not only around Cumnock but from all over - as the great chinese chef and smiling host at the Cumnock bowling Club for many years.

A Celebration of Life for Laurie was held at St Andrew’s Anglican Church, Roseville on Friday 27th September.

The Cumnock community, and all of us, expresses our sympathy to Helen and the family.

Now here’s a good idea to fill in school holiday time.

Margaret from the Molong Library sent in a photo of the children that visited the library on Wednesday morning to pick out some books and dvds to read and watch over the school holidays.

There was much discussion and big decisions made about what they were going to borrow.

Molong Probus Club Mary Iffland reports At our September meeting we had as our guest speaker Julie Dean and Betty Newstead from St. Johns Ambulance. They gave us a very informative talk on how the Service commenced back in Medieval times.

It was started here in Molong in 1994 and is the only group still going between Lithgow and Broken Hill which is a credit to the organisers and those young ones that join in and carry out their duties at various functions around the area including local shows and the Bathurst Car Races.

They were present in Dubbo for the visit of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. St John’s gives the young ones a great sense of community and self confidence and should be congratulated on the work they do.

Public submissions sought on Land Use Participation Plan

A document designed to make it easier for the community to participate in land use planning in Cabonne Shire is now on display and available for public comment.

The draft Cabonne Council Community Participation Plan sets out how and when people can take part in the land use planning system.

The plan can be viewed on Council’s website www.cabonne.nsw.gov.au or at the Council’s offices in Bank Street, Molong and Main Street, Cudal between 9am and 5pm until Wednesday 30 October 2019.

A series of community consultation sessions will be held this month at various locations in the Shire.

Submissions on the Cabonne Council Community Participation Plan can be lodged until 5pm on 30 October 2019.

What do visitors really spend in the Central West?

Visitor expenditure is a significant contributor to the NSW economy but regional councils find it impossible to get complete, reliable and up to date data on their local contribution to the sector. A project that is being trialled in the Central West aims to solve this issue.

The project is jointly funded by the Western Research Institute (WRI), Central NSW Joint Organisation of Councils and its ten Central NSW member councils and Destination Network Country and Outback NSW. Destination NSW estimated the 6.2 million visitors to the Central West region added $1.8 billion to the NSW economy in the year ending March 2019.

“Central West tourism activities grew by almost 21% compared to the previous year. If all business sectors in the Central West offered that level of growth, it would be extraordinary” Mayor of Cabonne Council, Councillor Kevin Beatty said.

“We know the contribution from the Central West visitor expenditure is significant and growing. We’d like to know how much councils contributed individually. That information is not available for all councils. Even where it is available, it isn’t a complete picture and it is not up to date” Cr Beatty added.

WRI has identified how to fill the gaps and provide councils with current estimates of what they contribute to the NSW visitor economy.

“The ten Central NSW councils participating in the pilot project will help WRI collect information to estimate the number visitors who come to each local government area, how much they really spend and how long they stay.” WRI CEO Kathy Woolley said.

“We also want to consider what is added to the local economies from hosting over a third of visitors to the Central West who stay in the homes of friends or relatives rather than in a hotel, motel or other accommodation type.

The share accommodation sector is also strong and not counted in typical visitor economy estimates.”

“The WRI Regional Tourism model will also include additional data to build a more complete picture of the number and the impact visitors to the Central West have.”

An ongoing survey to be completed by visitors at the accommodation providers, visitor information centres and major venues will commence on 16 August 2019. Additional surveying will seek responses from those who host their friends and relatives when they visit the region. The first results will be provided to participating councils and partners in December 2019.

The Wellington Times reports Acting Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack’s recent visit to the central west came just a week after a social media page calling for more government support went viral.

Earlier this month the Instagram page ‘The West is Waiting’ went viral encouraged people to take a photo of how the drought is affecting them with the hashtag #scottmorrisonwhereareyou with the hope the Prime Minister would visit the region and offer support.

Sh*t Towns of Australia: Bathurst, Dubbo, Lithgow and Orange named

LITHGOW may not have even been in the competition, but it’s won a leadership battle among readers.

The Blayney Chronicle reports viral Facebook page Sh*t Towns of Australia launched a nationwide competition earlier this year to find the most sh*t town across the country.

Named the Sh*t Town Showdown 2019, the competition included Bathurst, Dubbo and Orange, while Lithgow merely

received a passing mention on the page last month.

The page’s tongue-in-cheek review of Lithgow was far from complimentary and it attracted 2300 comments and more than 680 shares.

Australian Community Media then launched its own poll to see, out of the four Central West towns to receive a review on the page, which one readers thought was the most sh*t.

Of the 923 people who voted, 47.5 per cent (438 votes) selected Lithgow as the most sh*t.

Coming in next was Dubbo with 25.8 per cent (238 votes), followed by Orange at 14.7 per cent (136 votes) and Bathurst at 5.5 per cent (51 votes).

Residents give Parkes water tick of approval

Parkes’ drinking water has been given the tick of approval, with 43 per cent of locals rating the water quality High or Very High.

The Parkes Champion Post reports As part of the 2019 Parkes Water Survey, residents were asked to rate their satisfaction with the quality and affordability of Parkes’ drinking water, as well as gauge community attitudes towards the Recycled Water Scheme which will use recycled water to irrigate public greenspaces.

Residents who participated in the survey went into the draw to win Council vouchers towards their water bills.

Parkes Shire Mayor Councillor Ken Keith OAM was joined by Deputy Mayor Cr Barbara Newton, and Councillors Alan Ward and Bill Jayet as well as the Recycled Water Scheme mascot, Banjo the Frog, to draw three lucky prize winners.

Snakes about!

It’s that time of year. Anne Neill writes....

There’s a snake in the dunny With the advent of the warmer weather the less likeable things that inhabit the area with us, are all starting to raise their heads.

This week we had a snake invade the carport, and we were quite surprised to see one so early in the season, and with the changeable weather, we haven't really had any lengthy periods of warm days to bring them out of hibernation.

You are likely to find them in all kinds of places, and one can't be too wary when going about your daily chores.

Some years ago, when I was living on the banks of the Darling river, we had a city slicker friend from Melbourne visiting, and he was quite averse to anything that creeped or crawled, and being a hundred miles from the nearest sewage connections, we had the proverbial "Long Drop" dunny.

This was a favorite haunt of all kinds of creatures, from flies to spiders to scorpions and any other nasty you could think of. So it was no surprise to us to hear blood curdling hollers coming from said establishment whenever Oscar (as we shall call him) paid a visit.

On one momentous day, the scream coming from there was ear splitting, and so we thought we should go out and investigate. Imagine our surprise and mirth, to see a grown man trying to complete the minute mile up the flat with a bare backside and trousers around his ankles.

While he had been sitting there going

about his business, a snake had dropped down from the rafters and swung above is head. We have always been told that if you were to accidently come across a snake in your way, you should remain motionless until it passed, but Oscar has obviously missed out on this advice, and headed for the hills regardless of his state of undress.

Another episode of a snake n the dunny occurred after the big floods in 1974, when the river broke its banks and surrounded the homestead with water, causing the earth to cave in around the back and side of the outhouse, and the dunny achieved a precarious 45 degree angle, so much so, that we were sitting on an angle, and only one side of the bowl required cleaning.

One evening a snake was seen in the vicinity and next morning a track was found leading down into the pit, so one very brave husband decided that the best solution to the problem was to set fire to the pit to put an end to the intruder.

So, in his wisdom he poured a substantial amount of petrol in and threw a match after it resulting in one eliminated snake one emptied pit and one extremely unpleasant establishment to be cleaned from the ceiling down.

I could recount other endless tales of snakes and the strange places they can be found, so please be aware of your surroundings when you are outside, and make sure your children and pets are kept safe this summer.

Important as they are to the social fabric of many rural areas – and great contributors to communal wellbeing – the deepening climate crisis could see many such institutions become things of the past.

Ironically, the loudest voice in the Senate was that of one who last year spent more time in the Philippines than in his electorate.

Yet another inquiry will look into Family Law, ignoring the fact that none of the recommendations from last year’s Law Reform Commission inquiry have been discussed, let alone acted upon. When queried about this, the PM replied that it was “about listening”. A governmental inquiry into listening.

The appointment of Kevin Andrews and Pauline Hanson as Chair and Deputy is nothing short of a death blow to any chance of impartiality. Hanson has already made clear her belief that many women commit perjury to gain an advantage in divorce settlements, and it was Kevin Andrews who, back in 2014, claimed that divorce was a greater threat to Australia than climate change.

Last week, the PM, fresh from his Washington love-in with The Trump, headed off to Queensland to announce an “extra $100 million” in drought funding on top of the $7 billion it claims has already been allocated. However, some observers are calling this into question.

Labor’s Joel Fitzgibbon called it the “most audacious lie” he has ever heard in politics. Chief political correspondent for The Guardian, Sarah Martin writes that $5 billion of that allocation will be drawn from the Future Drought Fund, which passed the Parliament in July. (The Coalition says it is spending $7bn on drought – but can’t back up the claim. “The Guardian” [Rural] 30th September 2019). Martin writes that this fund was itself established with a $3.9 billion credit drawn from

the Labor-established Building Australia Fund.

She writes: “Earnings from the fund, which will be managed like the Medical Research Future Fund, will be reinvested into the drought fund until the balance reaches $5bn, which is expected to be achieved in 2028-29 “The Prime Minister, Scott Morrison, said the fund would ensure ‘money [was set] aside for non-rainy days in the future’.”

However, Martin writes that nothing will be spent until July next year.

To cap off a wonderful couple of weeks, on Tuesday last (October 1st) we learned that The Trump asked our government to assist the US Attorney-General in his attempt to discredit the Robert Mueller inquiry into actions of the Trump administration. Morrison agreed to the request.

Some are speculating that the lavish reception the PM and his entourage received in the US may have been his reward. Morrison’s role as Trump’s side man during the election rally come Presidential visit to an Ohio box factory might suggest to a die-hard cynic that he was grateful.

Whatever the truth may be, there is no doubt we are being ill-served by a government with no policies to speak of and possessed of a wilful ignorance to address the real problems facing this country.

Scientists have for years been warning of increasing drought and water shortages and governments have not listened. Towns all over NSW are running out of water – some have already done so – and still we are blind to the dangers we face. Orange has introduced Level 5 water restrictions, yet the Council recently voted against declaring a Climate Emergency. Sydney’s storages are falling rapidly but the NSW Parliament chooses to spend weeks arguing about women’s reproductive rights.

Federal Parliament is more concerned about the need to enshrine religious bigotry in law than it is about the need to take meaningful action over climate change.

The government spruikes dams and infrastructure and emergency payments for farmers, but In Parliament focuses on trivia. The mission to the drought stricken seems to have cost close to a million dollars but we are not allowed to know the results.

And some of us might still be wondering why Barnaby Joyce was rallying the right-to-life troops at a Sydney rally and not out there knocking on the doors of people with ideas that might assist farmers.

And Morrison and his ilk can’t understand why the kids are marching?

CTLX sheep and lamb report for 25/9/19

AGENTS YARDED 4275 LAMBS AND 1450 SHEEP It was a good quality yarding with good numbers of well finished new season lambs along with the expected light weights. There was also a much better selection of old lambs this sale. Most of the regular buyers were in attendance and operating.

Light weight lambs to the processors were $12 dearer, Trade lambs were firm to $5 dearer, to average from 835c to 875c/kg

cwt. Trade weight old lambs sold from $158 to $206/head. Heavy weight lambs were firm with the over 24kg 4 score new season lambs selling from $200 to $225/head. Merino lambs were firm with trade weights selling from $144 to $150/ head. Restocker lambs were $12 dearer, Hoggets sold up to $170/head.

It was a very mixed yarding of mutton with some top crossbred ewes and Merino ewes along with plenty of plainer lines.

CTLX cattle market report 1/10/19

AGENTS YARDED 1680 There was a small increase in numbers.

Young cattle were well supplied, along with cows. There were a few well finished heavy grown steers and heifers. The overall quality of the offering was good, with a limited supply of secondary quality cattle penned. The condition varied with well finished cattle in good numbers.

There was a good supply to suit restockers and feed lotters. The usual feedlot orders were present, however there was reduced processor competition, particularly on the better cows.

Demand was strong through the young cattle which resulted in firm to dearer trends. Light weight yearling steers to restockers experienced small but quality related price changes. Medium and heavy weight yearling steers sold to a dearer trend. Heavy trade steers saw quality related price changes on a cheaper market trend. Yearling heifers to feed saw a mostly firm market trend, with breed and quality variations resulting in a large price range. The secondary quality yearling heifers saw poor interest from buyers.

Well finished heavy grown steers to

processors sold on a firm to dearer market trend with some quality related price change. The well finished grown heifers followed a similar trend. The reduced competition and weaker demand saw the cow market decline. Well finished heavy weights eased up to 15c/kg.

Club Championships A Grade Triples and Fours Nomination list is now on the board. Please get your nominations in witthin the next two weeks so the draw can get underway.

Annual General Meeting Due to insufficient numbers nominating for board positions it was decided to recall nominations and resume the meeting on 20 October.

Changes to the club's constitition last year mean that social members (including women and non bowling members) can fill board positions) with exception of Executive who must be full members.

The club operates as a business entity, as a local social and recreation club - not only as a bowls club. There is the opportunity for other sporting and social associations to participate and utilise the club's facilities for their members.

The Brag One of Molong's best social and fun events returns on Friday October 18.

Teams of 3 play, or attempt to play, around 10 ends of bowls commencing at 6 pm at the Molong Bowling Club - followed by a sausage sizzle. Cost is $10 per head which covers green fees and sausage sizzle. No team nomination fees this year.
