NSW Farmers secures important win on Property Tax

Last week the Mayors of the region met in Canowindra for the first meeting of the new term of the Central NSW Joint Organisation.

Member Councils include Bathurst Regional Council, Blayney Shire Council, Cabonne Council, Cowra Shire Council, Forbes Shire Council, Lachlan Shire Council, Oberon Council, Orange City Council, Parkes Shire Council, and Weddin Shire Council.

Cr Kevin Beatty, Mayor of Cabonne was elected unopposed as chair.

“The great thing about this region is how collegiate it is. To have the unanimous confidence of the nine other Mayors on the Board is very heartening,” said Cr Beatty.

“We have a big year ahead with Federal and State elections and a good part of the meeting was discussing our key messages on important matters to the region like health services, transport links to Sydney and water security,” said Cr Beatty.

“Getting our message across to future government is a big team effort and leveraging the knowledge, expertise and networks of ten Mayors will make all the difference,” said Cr Beatty.

Cr Beatty will not be without some ides: the outgoing Chair, Cr John Medcalf, Mayor of Lachlan, had a bit to say about common sense about the sustainability of Local Government services in the context of the current raft of State decision making and for the management of the State,” said Cr Medcalf.

“For example, the biodiversity offset scheme is a good idea but the financial penalty is far too high and this is really stifling development.

“The E Portal that sought to enable faster consent times for development applications has slowed them down.

“Amalgamations that have supposed to save Councils and communities millions of dollars have sent a significant number of these new larger Councils to the wall.

“The intent of these processes was good but the outcomes have been poor,” said Cr Medcalf.

“We also need to be heard on regional plan making.

Effective communication is so important. The State’s strategic process can go from rushed to years in the making. These are for important things like transport and drinking water,” said Cr Medcalf.

“Then there is the culture of churn and change when every change in the Ministry has a change in the bureaucracy which can take up to three years to effect.

Given how often the Ministries change it is easy to see how service levels can decline,” “Local Government has extremely sound, regulated systems in place to assure their communities of good governance. We must go to the people every term and ask then what they want. We must have workforce, asset management and long-term financial plans that reflect the communities’ aspirations. We have audit, risk management and assurance frameworks regulated by the State. We have to report to the community on these

Agricultural land will be excluded from the NSW Government’s proposed stamp duty reforms thanks to the advocacy of NSW Farmers.

The changes, which would see stamp duty scrapped in favour of an annual land tax, would have made it even harder to make a living from farming.

Independent modelling showed farmers would be worse off after 15-18 years under the changes, prompting NSW Farmers to demand a ‘carve out’ for agriculture.

“We have had a number of discussions with the NSW Premier, including in recent weeks, about the potential adverse impacts of a property tax on farms in NSW,” NSW Farmers President James Jackson said.

“The Premier gave me a categoric undertaking that farms will be completely excluded from any future property tax the Coalition advances in NSW. “Farming is a deeply human profession – we work hard to feed and clothe people,” Mr Jackson said.

“I know that farmers right across the state will be thankful to the Premier for listening to NSW Farmers, and committing to exclude farmland for any future property tax should these reforms progress.”

Parkes receives funding boosts and it will affect us Parkes, only an hour of so up the road, has been declared a Special Activation Precinct, mainly due to it becoming a hub for the massive inland rail project now being constructed between Melbourne and Brisbane.

A bit like building a mini Badgerys Creek Airport which is transforming Sydney’s west.

And one of the main thoroughfares - road or rail - is right through Cabonne Country.

Two Parkes tourism attractions will receive major upgrades that will improve accessibility for visitors and give holidaymakers even more reasons to travel to the Central West.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW Paul Toole visited the CSIRO radio telescope to announce funding to ensure people of all abilities can visit The Dish.

It will upgrade visitor areas to provide wheelchair accessible paths, automatic doors at the visitor centre and accessible bathrooms to ensure The Dish remains a major tourism drawcard that can be enjoyed by everyone,” Mr Toole said.

Mr Toole said the enormously popular Parkes Elvis festival would also become an even more authentic experience with $376,707 in funding to construct replica gates of Elvis’ famous Memphis home Graceland.

“The Elvis festival celebrates The King like no other event in the world and the addition of these iconic gates will bring the Memphis mansion to Parkes and have

every impersonator lining up for selfies,” Mr Toole said.

“It’s not all about The King, the gates will be a monument to inductees to the Elvis Wall of Fame, featuring plaques honouring musicians from Billy Thorpe to Joe Camilleri, as well as the yearly winners of the Parkes Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest.”

But there’s more; Parkes to be home to $260 million global recycling business A $260 million investment and 100 new local jobs are on the way under a landmark agreement that will see Australia’s first advanced plastics recycling business established in the Parkes Special Activation Precinct.

Paul Toole also announced that global plastics recycling company Brightmark will bring its innovative waste solution technology to the Central West.

“This is a huge opportunity to get a slice of the $66 billion global plastics recycling industry which will bring strong economic growth and jobs to the region,” Mr Toole said.

“Brightmark’s $260 million investment in Parkes sends a clear message to other global companies; Parkes is the perfect place to invest, now and into the future.

“Parkes offers unparalleled access to Australian markets, as the only intersection of Australia’s two major rail spines. The industrial precinct offers the potential for businesses to move their goods to 80 per-cent of the population, or through any number of international ports overnight. This is why the NSW Government invested $185.4 million to kick-off delivery of the Parks Special Activation Precinct and it is exciting to see the benefits of the Parkes precinct already coming to life.”

The Parkes facility will process 200,000 tonnes of plastic waste, diverting that waste from landfill, to create alternate usable plastic products that are delivered back into the circularity market, assisting Australia to lower its carbon footprint.

Plant construction will start mid-2023, and is expected to be operational by 2025.

Music and Movies in the Villages Music and Movies in the Villages is an initiative

by Blayney and Cabonne Council’s under the NSW Government’s Festival of Place Summer Fund to bring the community together to support local musical artists and enjoy a family favourite movie.

Supported by local businesses and community groups, the events will have plenty of food and drink options to enjoy in a relaxed, casual setting.

Blayney Shire Mayor, Scott Ferguson is happy to see plenty of events back on the calendar.

“It is great to have some family friendly, community events coming up and get back to some normality and enjoy a family favourite movie at the same time” Cabonne Council Mayor, Kevin Beatty said that these events have been very well received in the community, with the businesses and community groups alike looking forward to getting involved in events again.

At our February meeting 38 members and friends traveled to Manildra to the Amusu Theatre to enjoy a delicious lunch and the Movie “Military Wives” which was based on a true story. Our next meeting to be held on the 8th March will be the AGM it will start at 10.00am at the Molong Bowling Club.

Like rivers in the sky: the weather system bringing floods to Queensland will become more likely under climate change The severe floods in southeast Queensland this week have forced hundreds of residents to flee the town of Gympie and have cut off major roads, after intense rain battered the state for several days. The rain is expected to continue today, and travel south into New South Wales.

We research a weather system called “atmospheric rivers”, which is causing this inundation. Indeed, atmospheric rivers triggered many of the world’s floods in 2021, including the devastating floods across eastern Australia in March which killed two people and saw 24,000 evacuate.

Our recently published research was the first to quantify the impacts these weather systems have in Australia, and another study we published in November looked closely at the floods in March last year We found while atmospheric rivers bring muchneeded rainfall to the agriculturally significant Murray-Darling Basin, their potential to bring devastating floods will become more likely in a warmer world under climate change.

What are atmospheric rivers?

Atmospheric rivers are like highways of water vapour between the tropics and poles, located in the first one to three kilometres of the atmosphere. They are responsible for about 90% of the water vapour moving from north to south of the planet, despite covering only 10% of the globe.

When atmospheric rivers crash into mountain ranges or interact with cold fronts, they rain out this water with potentially disastrous impacts. Mountains and fronts lift the water vapour up in the atmosphere where it cools and condenses into giant, liquid-forming bands of clouds.

Intense thunderstorms can also form within atmospheric rivers.

Three atmospheric rivers last year were particularly devastating.

In January, California was hit with a strong atmospheric river that caused record-breaking rainfall and blizzards. It also triggered a landslide on California’s iconic Highway 1.

In November, British Columbia, Canada was battered with record breaking rainfall that left Vancouver isolated from the rest of the country.

And in March, Eastern Australia copped a drenching that led to widespread flooding and A$652 million worth of damage. All mainland states and territories except WA faced simultaneous weather warnings.

What we found

Our recently published research provides the first quantitative summary of atmospheric rivers over Australia. It’s not all bad news – most of the time,

atmospheric rivers bring beneficial rainfall to Australia.

About 30% of southeast Australia’s rainfall comes from atmospheric rivers, including in the Murray-Darling Basin.

Rainfall is vital to this region. The Murray-Darling Basin supports over 500 species of birds, reptiles and fish, and around 30,000 wetlands. Agriculture in the Murray-Darling Basin contributes A$24 billion to the Australian economy.

However, we also found that 30-40% of the heaviest rainfall days in the Northern Murray-Darling Basin, where towns such as Tamworth, Dubbo and Orange are located, were associated with atmospheric rivers.

A heavy downpour in Australia’s bread basket might lead to happier farmers during a dry period, but following a wet summer – such as from La Niña – these days are less welcome.

La Niña saturates soil

La Niña can play a big role in flooding, as it exacerbates damage wrought by atmospheric rivers.

A La Niña was declared in spring in 2020 and fizzled out by March in 2021. A second La Niña arrived in the summer of 2021 and 2022.

During a La Niña, winds that blow from east to west near the equator strengthen. This leads to cold, deep ocean water rising up to the surface in the East Pacific, near South America, and warm ocean waters to build near Australia.

How to collect, propagate and grow your own seed?

What a huge topic Rozzi has given me! So much that I will have to divide it several sections. Of course, having been Greening Australia’s Central West Seed Bank Coordinator for over a decade, I am quite the local expert on native seed collection and propagation, so I will start there.

• Doesn’t it last for only ten years so why grow it? Having just finished my own collecting for the year that statement is WRONG, yes there are some which have a short lifespan, some grow into massive trees. We all know of the beneficial timber for furniture from Tasmania Blackwood, Acacia melanoxylon once common from the Central Tablelands of NSW to Tasmania. A similar tree here is A. implexa with a lifespan 50/100 years to 80 ft tall.

• They produce habitat and nesting sites for small birds, pollen for insects i.e. bees, copious amounts of seed for birds; topknot and bronze wing pigeons, peaceful doves, button and stubble quails, parrots and many other birds. They are essential to create an efficient wing break and nature strip.

• To collect, firstly whether it be wheat, wattle or any other seed it must be ripe to be viable. Most species encased in a pod will open to reveal the ripe seed which will simply drop out to the soil. (see photo).

Small amounts can simply be picked into a container.

For large amounts a tarp or sheet is places under the bush or tree and using a whacker, an old golf club is useful, encourage the pods to vacate the tree. You may need to thrash the pods to release the seed by placing inside a bag or old pillow slip against the nearest brick

wall.

• With most hard seeded species, mother nature has given them a survival mechanism, a waxy seed coating to stop the seed from imbibing water, essential in the germinating process. A bush fire or drought- like weather conditions melts away this coating and the seed will germinate on the next rainfall. You can remove some of this coating with small amounts of seed simply by rubbing between two layers of sandpaper. With my time with GA and treating large amounts of seed, boiling water was used over the seed, leaving to cool for an hour, then dry in the sun and use or store.

• Seed should be sown in a container or direct into the soil, Autumn through to Spring, covering to the depth of the seed. Keep moist in free draining potting mix.

Be aware you may need a S132 License if collecting on Council roads or public reserves, Google Native Seed Collecting Guidelines. Next week, what pots and potting mix to use and all about Eucalypts and other small seeds, including your garden plants.

Molong St John Ambulance Cadets return to Training

Bookings are flowing in as St John Ambulance Cadets return to Training This week Thursday 3 March will see the return of the Officers and Cadet Leaders with their first Management workshop since COVID restrictions changed our world.

The current Cadet members will return on 10 March.

Cadets at last year's Canowindra Balloon Glow.

This will be one of the early events the Cadets cover this year.

17 March will be a special Information Night for Parents and their children who are interested in joining our team.

St John Ambulance Cadets meet on Thursday evenings from 6-8pm at Molong Central School Hall. Current COVID regulations require all members to show they are double vaccinated to attend meeting and training nights.

Deserving new Life Members

The Molong Golf Club and its magnificent course continues to thrive.

Last Sunday the course attracted nearly 20 players (10 of whom played the whole 18 holes. (See Gerard's report page 15). Following the usual BBQ lunch Club President announced two new life members (see left).

Meanwhile the course happily hosts a popular "Disc Golf" layout, brainchild of Kevin and Sharon Costa. The course attracted state title events soon after it was completed.

Kevin is not only a keen disc golfer - but is good at it. (see below).

Not only that the Golf Club has won a state government grant for clubhouse refurbishment which will see the clubhouse and its amenity ares updated..

Golf Club President Ged Fullwood with new life members Kerry and Scott Oates Molong Golf Club has a dedicated group of members who put time and effort into maintaning the course, mowing and preparing the course for golf days.

(But not chopping down a particular tree that keeps getting in Stubba's way) Last Sunday the Club recognised two of these marvelous volunteers who have given countless hours to the wellbeing of the club.

Kerry and Scott Oates were awarded life membership.

Kerry and Scott have been members of the club for some 25 years - Kerry taking on the Treasurer's job for 10 years and is currently the club's handicapper.

Scott is a past Vice President and has dedicated oodles of time with maintenance of the course and machinery.

Both spend hours volunteering at the course mowing and preparing greens and tees each week as well as helping with catering for events

and tournaments The Molong course is always looking at its best with all the hard work Kerry, Scott and the other vilunterrs put in.

Well done to you both.

Following on from the success of local Disc Golfers at last weekend’s ACT Championships, Molongbased Disc Golfer Kevin Costa travelled on to Geelong in Victoria to compete in the Australian Disc Golf Championships.

Taking place at the superchallenging Inverleigh Disc Golf course, which features extremely tight-lines, monstrously long fairways, multiple holes requiring long throws over water and the famously nasty Inverleigh spiky acacia, this huge three-day event attracted around 200 of the most skilled Disc Golfers from every state across Australia.

Competing in the Men’s Pro 40 division Kevin was competing against some of the most skilled and experienced players in Australia, but at the end of the first round a strong start saw him sitting in equal second place, just one stroke behind the leader.

A wayward start to round two meant that a fightback was needed and so a clean back nine where Kevin pared every hole saw him back into the mix, once again one stroke behind the lead shared by former Australian National Champion Neil Roberts of Newcastle and Melbourne-based Kiwi Matt Adams.

The final round was a seesawing battle with each of the five players on the top card holding the lead at different stages and when Kevin sank his final putt in front of a massive cheering gallery he found himself in equal first place with the experienced Adams.

And so a play-off was needed to decide the title. Under normal circumstances these playoffs are usually decided within a hole or two as one of the players succumbs to the extreme pressure of the situation. But it took 13 playoff holes and over one and half hours of nail-biting play before Kevin mis-threw a drive on a tightly-

wooded hole, allowing Matt to play a sensible layup for par and the title. Disc Golf aficionados are still scouring the record books to see if there has ever been a longer playoff required to decide a title in a major event.

“It certainly was the most intense Disc Golf which I have ever played” reported Costa “but it really came down to who would make the first mistake and when the opportunity presented itself Matt is too experienced a player not to jump in and take it.”

“This was a massive event and really shows how Disc Golf has developed and why it is now one of the fastest growing sports in the world” Costa said.

There are currently many thousands of players around the country regularly playing Disc Golf and an estimated three million players world-wide taking part in this addictive sport.

Kevin now returns to his role as President of the Molong-based Central West Disc Golf Club, which will be hosting three major PDGA-sanctioned events this year, culminating in the NSW Open in October. This event may attract hundreds of players and will be a huge boost for Molong as these players, supporters and teams will travel from across the country and spend several days in the area. They, of course, need accommodation, food, things to do and so on, meaning that all areas of the town benefit from the growth of Disc Golf here in Molong.

This is one of the key findings in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Sixth Assessment Report on Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability, released overnight.

I have contributed to the section on coastal cities, which concludes: Realising global aspirations for climate resilient development depends on the extent to which coastal cities and settlements […] close the coastal adaptation gap, and take urgent action to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions.

This is especially relevant for Aotearoa New Zealand and Australia because our people, the things we value and our economies and livelihoods are concentrated along the shoreline.

Resilient and sustainable coastal livelihoods depend on maintaining diverse, productive and healthy coastal ecosystems in the face of global change.

Severe disruption to coastal livelihoods is inevitable A large proportion of the world’s population and critical infrastructure is already concentrated along shorelines.

Nearly 11% of the global population, about 896 million people, live on low-elevation coasts directly exposed to climate and non-climate coastal hazards. These cities and settlements are growing rapidly as people move to the coast.

Prospects for climate-resilient development are dismal because of accelerating sea-level rise and rapidly worsening climate-driven risks in a warming world.

But coastal settlements nonetheless play a key role in advancing climate-resilient development because they are critical for national economies and global maritime trade.

The IPCC’s earlier report showed that global mean sea level has risen faster since 1900 than during any preceding century in at least the last 3000 years. This latest report reiterates that unavoidable sea-level rise will cause cascading and compounding impacts. This includes the loss of coastal ecosystems and their services, groundwater salinisation, flooding and damage to coastal infrastructure.

Globally, we expect about a billion people will be at risk from coast-specific climate hazards under all emissions scenarios. In coming decades, the risk of coastal flooding will increase rapidly. It could be two to three orders of magnitude greater by 2100, without effective adaptation and mitigation.

Historically rare extreme sea-level events (that occurred once in 100 years in the past) will happen annually by 2100. Some atolls will become uninhabitable by 2050. If global mean sea level rises by 0.15m relative to current levels, the population at risk of a 100-year coastal flood increases by about 20%. This number doubles at 0.75m and triples at 1.4m, assuming present-day population and protection.

Sea-level rise as existential threat

By 2100, the value of global assets within one-in-100year coastal floodplains is projected to reach US$7.9 to $12.7 trillion under a mid-range emissions scenario. In a high-emissions world, it could rise up to $14.2 trillion.

These impacts will be felt well beyond coastal cities.

Damage to ports could severely compromise global supply chains and maritime trade, with potentially major geo-political and economic ramifications.

Sea-level rise constitutes a chronic adaptation challenge. It requires dealing with slow-onset changes in parallel with increasing frequency and magnitude of extreme events that will escalate in coming decades. At centennial timescales, projected sea-level rise constitutes an existential threat for many island nations, low-lying coastal zones and their communities, infrastructure and cultural heritage.

Even if we stabilise global warming at 2–2.5º above pre-industrial levels, coastlines will continue to reshape over millennia. This will affect at least 25 megacities and, by 2100, inundate low-lying areas currently home to 0.6–1.3 billion people.

Global aspirations for climate-resilient development Extensive adaptation planning has taken place since the IPCC’s previous assessment. But widespread implementation is lacking and this has created a pronounced “coastal adaptation gap”.

We need to close this gap quickly. The report finds we already have effective ways to prepare for impacts and to cut emissions, but they must be embedded in development planning to reduce vulnerability and restore ecosystems.

This depends on governments, civil society and the private sector making inclusive choices that prioritise risk reduction, equity and justice. We will also need to integrate decision-making processes, finance and actions across all governance levels and timeframes.

International cooperation will be crucial. We will need to strengthen partnerships with traditionally marginalised groups, including youth, Indigenous peoples, local communities and ethnic minorities.

This will require us to reconcile divergent interests, values and worldviews. We need to reduce structural vulnerabilities to climate change through carefully designed and implemented legal and policy interventions, from the local to global level, that take into account prevailing inequities.

Rights-based approaches that focus on capacity building, meaningful participation of the most vulnerable groups and their access to key resources, including finance, play a crucial role in reducing climate risk and enabling transformative adaptation.

Planning and decision-making processes should identify “low regrets” options that allow us to reduce emissions and prepare for impacts in the face of deep uncertainty and contestation. Governance for climateresilient development is most effective when supported by formal and informal institutions and practices that remain flexible enough to respond to emergent risks.

As sentinels on the climate change frontline, coastal cities and settlements play a pivotal role in global efforts to adapt to unfolding climate change impacts and to

navigate perilous times ahead.

This report deepens the findings of the IPCC’s earlier report about the world’s oceans and icescapes. It identifies five core conditions for coastal cities and settlements to fulfil their role in climate-resilient development.

- Take a long-term perspective when making shortterm decisions by keeping options open to adjust as sealevel rises and avoiding new development in high-risk locations - enable more effective coordination by establishing networks across different governance levels and policy domains to build trust and legitimise decisions - reduce social and climate injustice by taking historical conditions, including past emissions, and prevailing political realities into account and proactively reducing vulnerability and inequity strengthen local democracy by facilitating participation, involving stakeholders early and consistently through to implementation, with particular attention to engaging Indigenous people and marginalised and vulnerable groups - develop governance capabilities to tackle complex problems by drawing on multiple knowledge systems, including Indigenous, local and scientific knowledge to co-design more acceptable and effective responses.

Australia and Australians This hilarious piece was written by the late Douglas Adams of "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" fame "Australia is a very confusing place, taking up a large amount of the bottom half of the planet. It is recognisable from orbit because of many unusual features, including what at first looks like an enormous bite taken out of its southern edge; a wall of sheer cliffs which plunge into the girting sea.

Geologists assure us that this is simply an accident of geomorphology, but they still call it the "Great Australian Bight", proving that not only are they covering up a more frightening theory but they can't spell either.

The first of the confusing things about Australia is the status of the place. Where other landmasses and sovereign lands are classified as continent, island or country, Australia is considered all three.

Typically, it is unique in this.

The second confusing thing about Australia is the animals. They can be divided into three categories: Poisonous, Odd, and Sheep. It is true that of the 10 most poisonous arachnids on the planet, Australia has 9 of them. Actually, it would be more accurate to say that of the 9 most poisonous arachnids, Australia has all of them.

Any visitors should be careful to check inside boots (before putting them on), under toilet seats (before sitting down) and generally everywhere else.

A stick is very useful for this task.

The last confusing thing about Australia is the inhabitants.

A short history: Sometime around 40,000 years ago some people arrived in boats from the north.

They ate all the available food, and a lot of them died.

The ones who survived learned respect for the balance of nature, man's proper place in the scheme of things, and spiders. They settled in and spent a lot of the intervening time making up strange stories. They also discovered a stick that kept coming back.

Then, around 200 years ago, Europeans arrived in boats from the north.

More accurately, European convicts were sent, with a few deranged people in charge.

They tried to plant their crops in autumn (failing to take account of the reversal of the seasons), ate all their food, and a lot of them died.

About then the sheep arrived, and have been treasured ever since. It is interesting to note

here that the Europeans always consider themselves vastly superior to any other race they encounter, since they can lie, cheat, steal and litigate (marks of a civilised culture they say), whereas all the Aboriginals can do is happily survive being left in the middle of a vast red-hot desert - equipped with a stick.

Eventually, the new lot of people stopped being Europeans on 'extended holiday' and became Australians. The changes are subtle, but deep, caused by the mind-stretching expanses of nothingness and eerie quiet, where a person can sit perfectly still and look deep inside themselves to the core of their essence, their reasons for being, and the necessity of checking inside their boots every morning for fatal surprises. They also picked up the most finely tuned sense of irony in the world, and the Aboriginal gift for making up stories. Be warned.

There is also the matter of the beaches. Australian beaches are simply the nicest and best in the world, although anyone actually venturing into the sea will have to contend with sharks, stinging jellyfish, stonefish (a fish which sits on the bottom of the sea, pretends to be a rock and has venomous barbs sticking out of its back that will kill just from the pain) and surfboarders. However, watching a beach sunset is worth the risk.

As a result of all this hardship, dirt, thirst and wombats, you would expect Australians to be a sour lot. Instead, they are genial, jolly, cheerful and always willing to share a kind word with a stranger. Faced with insurmountable odds and impossible problems, they smile disarmingly and look for a stick. Major engineering feats have been performed with sheets of corrugated iron, string and mud.

Alone of all the races on earth, they seem to be free from the 'Grass is greener on the other side of the fence' syndrome, and roundly proclaim that Australia is, in fact, the other side of that fence. They call the land "Oz" or "Godzone" (a verbal contraction of "God's Own Country"). The irritating thing about this is... they may be right.

TIPS TO SURVIVING AUSTRALIA Don't ever put your hand down a hole for any reason - WHATSOEVER. The beer is stronger than you think, regardless of how strong you think it is.

Always carry a stick.

Air-conditioning is imperative.

Do not attempt to use Australian slang unless you are a trained linguist and extremely good in a fist fight.

Wear thick socks.

Take good maps. Stopping to ask directions only works when there are people nearby.

If you leave the urban areas, carry several litres of water with you at all times, or you will die. And don't forget a stick.

Even in the most embellished stories told by Australians, there is always a core of truth that it is unwise to ignore.

HOW TO IDENTIFY AUSTRALIANS They pronounce Melbourne as "Mel-bin".

They think it makes perfect sense to decorate highways with large fibreglass bananas, prawns and sheep.

They think "Woolloomooloo" is a perfectly reasonable name for a place, that "Wagga Wagga" can be abbreviated to "Wagga", but "Woy Woy" can't be called "Woy".

Their hamburgers will contain beetroot. Apparently it's a must-have.

How else do you get a stain on your shirt?

They don't think it's summer until the steering wheel is too hot to handle.

They believe that all train timetables are works of fiction.

And they all carry a stick..

Rivers in the sky: (Continued from page 5) Warm sea surface temperatures promote rainfall, which is why La Niña is associated with rainier weather over much of Australia.

Soil is like a kitchen sponge. It absorbs water, but once it becomes saturated it can no longer soak up any more.

This is what happened to eastern Australia in the months before the March floods – and when the record-breaking rain fell, the ground flooded.

Our recent research found that in March 17-24 last year, NSW experienced an almost constant stream of high water vapour in the atmosphere above from both an atmospheric river that originated in the Indian Ocean and a high pressure system in the Tasman Sea. On March 23, over 800kg of water vapour passed over Sydney every second - that’s 9.6 Sydney Harbours of water in one day.

Likewise, soil moisture in south-east Queensland has been above average since October last year. Last November was Australia’s wettest November on record with south-east Queensland receiving very-much-above average rainfall.

This meant the ground was already sodden. So when the heavy rain fell this week, Queensland flooded.

What’s the role of climate change?

We also calculated the likelihood of future atmospheric rivers as big as the one in March 2021 flowing over Sydney using the latest generation of climate models.

Earth is currently on track for 2.7º warming by the end of the century. Under this scenario, we found the chance of a similar weather event to the March floods will become 80% more likely. This means we are on track for more extreme rainfall and flooding in Sydney.

We also know climate change will increase the

occurrence of atmospheric rivers over the planet, but more research is needed to determine just how often we can expect these damaging events to happen, including in southeast Queensland.

However, this path is not final. There is still time to change the outcome if we urgently reduce emissions to stop global warming beyond 1.5º this century. Every little bit we do to limit carbon emissions might mean one less flood and one less person who has to rebuild.

My husband and I were dressed and ready to go out for a lovely evening of dinner and theatre.

Having been burgled in the past, we turned on a 'night light' and the answering machine, then put the cat in the backyard.

When our cab arrived, we walked out our front door and our rather tubby cat scooted between our legs inside, then ran up the stairs.

Because our cat likes to chase our budgie we really didn't want to leave them unchaperoned so my husband ran inside to retrieve her and put her in the back yard again.

Because I didn't want the taxi driver to know our house was going to be empty all evening, I explained to him that my husband would be out momentarily as he was just bidding goodnight to my mother.

A few minutes later he got into the cab all hot and bothered, and said (to my growing horror and amusement) as the cab pulled away.

"Sorry it took so long but the stupid thing was hiding under the bed and I had to poke her backside with a coat hanger to get her to come out! She tried to take off so I grabbed her by the neck and wrapped her in a blanket so she wouldn't scratch me like she did last time. But it worked! I hauled her bum down the stairs and threw her into the backyard.... she had better not poo in the vegetable garden again."

WORLD DAY OF PRAYER The World day of Prayer as the name suggests is a day that the whole world prays for the women in different countries each year and is usually held on the first Friday in March. This year it is about the women in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and they are the ones that produce the Service and tell of some of their life experiences.

It is an Ecumenical Service and in Molong this year it is being held at St. Johns Anglican Church on the Corner of Bank and Edward Sts. starting at 10.00am followed by morning tea.

It is a simple Service and open to anyone and everyone who would like to come and join with like minded people to honor the women of England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Molong Golf Ladies 9 ladies had an enjoyable catch up and Lunch at Be Tempted last Wednesday.

Golf has started up again and we will play each Wednesday at 8.30 for a 9.00am tee off.

Molong Cricket Association is pleased to announce NSW badged umpire David Warburton as umpire for Saturday’s Major Semi Final Cudal V Country at Cudal. Teams will be required to umpire square leg.

On a side note the Association wishes Jacob Evans a speedy recovery after he fractured his ankle playing soccer yesterday. Jacob will be having surgery and faces a long road to recovery.

CUDAL WIN MINOR PREMIERSHIP Cudal are this seasons Minor Premiers after thrashing Magpies. Congratulations Cudal particularly in your 150th year of playing cricket.

Sunday Sunday at Royal Molong golf course saw ten players playing a eighteen hole individual stableford event and seven players playing a nine hole ambrose event. The winner of the eighteen hole event was Ged who emphasised that he And then every Wednesday amassed thirty six points. Troy was the runner up with thirty four points.

The winners of the nine hole event were Matt and Heffo. I was there to witness their last hole where Heffo put his tee shot straight into the bush beside the tee off. If it wasn’t for the bush the ball would have cleaned me up. Matt put his tee 34; Canowindra 32; Millthorpe 26; Lyndhurst shot on the green and sank the putt for a birdie.

This weekend six members of Royal Molong golf club are travelling to Dunedoo to play in the NSW Men’s Sand Greens Fourball Championships. Because of the large number of players the Coolah golf course is also being utilised.

There were some excellent runs of ideal feeder steers, along with a few pens of plainer, Bos Indicus crosses. There were some good runs of heavy grown steers and over 200 mostly prime heavy weight cows. All the usual buyers were operating. Cows and grown heifers were dearer, other categories slightly cheaper.

Prime steer yearlings sold from 530c to 585c, while yearling heifers to process were slightly cheaper averaging 531c/kg. Medium weight feeder steers were 12c cheaper, making from 540c to 607c ,and those over 400kg, slipped 8c, ranging from 470c to 604c/kg. Feeder heifers were also cheaper to average 530c/kg. There was a limited supply of young cattle returning to the paddock. Weaner steers ranged from 620c to 760c, and the heifer portion received from 535c to 610c/kg.

Grown steers to process reached 470c and grown heifers topped at 480c/kg. Heavy 4 score

CTLX SHEEP 23 February It was a good quality yarding with good numbers of well finished heavy weight lambs and only limited numbers of ideal trade weights.

Lambs to suit the restockers were also in limited supply and there were only a couple of pens of light Merino lambs yarded. Most of the usual buyers were in attendance and operating.

Trade lambs were $10 cheaper selling from $160 to $201 to average between 770c and 810c/kg cwt. The better yarding of heavy weight lambs were up to $10 dearer with the lambs over 24kg selling from $195 to $243/ head to average between 800c and 815c/kg cwt. Restocker lambs were up to $15 cheaper on quality selling from $71 to $177/head. Young Merino lambs sold to the restockers from $52 to $118/head. Hoggets sold to $200/head.

It was a mostly pretty good quality yarding of mutton where the lightweight sheep were $5 cheaper and the better heavy weight sheep were $9/head dearer. Merino ewes sold from $75 to $155 while crossbred ewes sold from $86 to $200/head. Merino wethers sold from $80 to $139 while crossbred wethers sold to $200/head. The restockers paid from $50 to $135 for Merino ewes and from $170 to $243/ head for Aussie White ewes.
