Local hearts were filled when these two wonderful city ladies arrived in Molong on Wednesday to do their bit to ease the worry of the drought. Barb Osborne (above centre) of Neutral Bay and Dianna Berckelman (right) of Mosman brought city warmth to country folk through their own initiative. "We've been watching this long drought and the devastating effects on farming and town families" said Dianne. "We decided to head to the Central West to let people here know that we city folk do care about them" said Barb. Using their own money, the Express found the two lovely ladies filling a trolley in SPAR which Manager, Nicole and assistant Jayden wheeled to Vinnies for distribution to local farming families in need. Thank you Barb and Di - two wonderful women who have made a difference.

News Monday 28 October A 30 year old male was charged in Orange with burnout offence, Negligent Driving, Custody of a knife in a Public Place and Armed with Intent to Commit Indictable Offence on 27th October 2019. Police will allege the male attended an address and armed himself with a knife. The male was issued with a Court Attendance Notice and will appear before Orange Local Court on 2nd December 2019.

A 15 year old male was charged in Orange with Use Offensive Weapon with Intent to Commit Indictable Offence and Destroy or Damage Property on 27th October 2019. Police will allege the male threatened a 57 year old female and damaged property at a Molong Road Orange address. The male was issued with a Court Attendance Notice and will appear before Orange Children’s Court on 28th October 2019.

Tuesday 29 October A green Holden Barina was stolen from McNamara Street Orange between 11.30am and 9.30pm Monday 28th October 2019.

A stealing occurred on Kite Street Orange about 6.50pm Friday 25th October 2019. A hose was taken from the location.

A vehicle was damaged on Anson Street Orange about 9.25am Monday 28th October 2019.

A 15 year old male was arrested in Orange in relation to three outstanding warrants on 28th October 2019. The warrants relate to an Assault matter, a Fail to Appear matter and an AVO matter.

A 12 year old female was charged in Orange with Break and Enter Dwelling House with Intent on 28th October 2019. Police will allege the female broke into a premises on Nunkeri Place Orange. The female was issued with a Court Attendance Notice and will appear before Orange Children’s Court on 29th October 2019.

A 20 year old male was charged in Orange with Breach AVO on 28th October 2019. Police will allege the male entered a premises and contacted a person he was prohibited from contacting due to an enforceable Apprehended Domestic Violence Order. The male was issued with a Court Attendance Notice and will appear before Orange Local Court on 29th October 2019.

Wednesday 30 October A parcel was stolen on Elizabeth Street Orange about 11.30am Monday 28th October 2019.

A stealing occurred on Betula Street Orange between 12pm Monday 28th and 3pm Tuesday 29th October 2019. A car key was taken from the premises.

A break and enter occurred on Orchard Grove Road Orange between 6.45am and 4.10pm Tuesday 29th October 2019. Entry was gained and nothing appears to have been taken.

Level 5 water restrictions will come into effect in Molong from Monday 4 November 2019.

Cabonne Mayor Kevin Beatty said with no end in sight to the crippling drought, there have been no significant flows into Molong Creek Dam which is now at its lowest level since 2001.

“Council appreciates the efforts Molong residents have made to save water and we seek the community’s cooperation to continue to observe restrictions and make every drop count,” he said.

Under Level 5 restrictions, the water consumption target will be 160 litres per person per day.

The major differences from the

current Level 4 restrictions include: • No sprinklers, micro-sprays or soaker hoses can be used; • Buckets, watering cans, drip systems or a hand-held hose may be used on gardens for 30 minutes between 6pm-7pm each Sunday.

• No filling or topping up swimming pools or water features; and • No washing cars at home.

Central Tablelands Water (CTW) County Council will be holding an official function on Wednesday 30 October 2019 in Eugowra to celebrate its 75th Anniversary since its proclamation as a County Council in 1944.

Invited guests include current Federal and State members of parliament, CTW Councillors (past and present), constituent council mayors and general managers, and senior executive CTW staff.

CTW currently provides quality drinking water to 14 towns and villages to approximately 15,000 consumers in the local government areas of Blayney, Cabonne, Weddin, Cowra and Bland. An emergency pipeline has also recently been commissioned linking CTW and Orange City Council water filtration plants to further assist in regional water security.

CTW’s main water supply is from Lake Rowlands. Lake Rowlands was constructed in 1953 and is a 20 metre high concrete buttress dam that impounds Coombing Rivulet.

The dam has a capacity of 4.5GL.

CTW’s Chairman, Cr David Somervaille said, “CTW has achieved much in its 75 years.

The original vision was bold: potable water delivered principally by gravity from a dam on the Coombing Rivulet to the main towns and villages throughout the Lachlan Valley. At its peak the county had 11 constituent council members. Council mergers and the withdrawal of Parkes, Lachlan and Cowra reduced the number back to the current three by the early 1990’s.

The road to the proclamation of the County in 1944 was littered with obstacles. It took 6 years of lobbying, spanning several changes of government and responsible ministers. Seeking public money to fund essential public services was as much of a problem then as it is today. The key challenge, then and now, is financing and maintaining infrastructure to deliver potable water to smaller communities over long distances.”

Cr Somervaille added, “Our organisation is extraordinarily efficient. We are able to deliver quality water to our customers at a similar price to much more closely settled regional centres.

Continuing to do this will be a challenge. Government funding for water supply infrastructure needs to be assessed by reference to what is reasonably required to efficiently deliver fundamental community services, rather than through upfront capital grants allocated through a competitive process.”

“As we celebrate our 75th anniversary our region is in the middle of a severe drought. Towns in the Central West are under severe water restrictions. We are well placed to be part of the solution to long term urban water security throughout the Lachlan Valley and to our neighbouring towns and villages. That was the original vision of our founders and is still sound today,” said Cr Somervaille.

Residents will have the chance to learn more about how the city is responding to the drought and to ask their questions at two Water Forums to be held in Orange next week.

[Given the water interdependence between Orange/Blayney/Cabonne this Orange City Council release is reprinted in the Express] Orange City Council will hold Water Forums on: • Monday 4 November at 5.30 pm in the Civic Theatre foyer • Thursday 7 November at 12 noon in the council chambers Orange City Council CEO David Waddell believes there’s a huge amount of interest in the topic of water around Orange.

“Whether it’s water restrictions, or how long the water in the dam will last, or how our stormwater harvesting system works, it’s a topic that everyone is talking about,” David Waddell said. “On top of the work that’s already been done, we’re working on a number of different water infrastructure projects and we want to keep people in the loop about progress.”

“If we’re going to get through this drought together, it’s crucial that everyone has the most accurate, the most up-to-date information.

“There are signs people are really taking the new Level 5 water restrictions seriously. For the last two weeks there’s been a sudden and very noticeable spike in our water consumption on Sunday nights between 6pm and 7pm. That’s a sign people are willing to work together and only watering their gardens in line with the time mentioned in the Level 5 restrictions. That’s encouraging.”

The forums are scheduled to last for one hour.

There’ll be a series of short presentations from a panel of council staff about different aspects of how the council is managing water. There’ll also be half on hour allocated for taking questions from residents.

“If people have a question, it’s sure to be something that someone else is also wondering about,” David Waddell said. “I hope people come along with their questions and with a willingness to listen and to learn about something new.”

“The council has been working hard on an awareness campaign. So far that’s included TV and radio, local newspaper coverage, online resources and brochures that have been mailed to every ratepayer in Orange. But there’s nothing like a face to face opportunity that can also add to people’s understanding.”

Molong Banjo Paterson Festival Dinner on again in 2020 According to Molong Advancement Group Chairperson Peter Batten, Molong Advancement Group have listened to the requests from many people who attended the Banjo Paterson Festival Dinner last year asking for it to be repeated in 2020.

Molong Locals Off to Disc Nationals.

Following on from the huge success of the NSW Open Disc Golf Titles here in Molong, and the incredible growth of the sport in our town, two of our local Disc Golfers will be heading off to Mount Gambier in South Australia this week to compete in the Australian Disc Golf Championships, the peak National event in this rapidly growing sport.

Sharon (above) and Kevin Costa will be making the journey south to compete in this huge event, in which they will be competing with nearly 150 players representing all states of Australia, as well as a contingent of international players.

The event is held over two Championship level courses, with one designed around a traditional ball-golf course and the second within a huge reserve situated deep in an enormous crater near town – a unique sporting venue.

Sharon will be competing in the Novice Women’s Division, whilst Kevin will be competing in the Open Men’s Professional Division, coming off a recent win at the Dubbo Charge event and a third place in the Pro Division at the NSW Open.

We look forward to hearing their results from the event.

Andrew Gee MP takes Central West water security to the Deputy Prime Minister

Federal Member for Calare, Andrew Gee, met recently with the Deputy Prime Minister, Michael McCormack, and Central Tablelands Water staff (CTW) at the Parliament of Australia, to progress proposed water security projects for the Central West region.

The meeting was attended by Mr Gee, Mr McCormack, and CTW stakeholders: Chair - Cr David Somervaille, General Manager – Gavin Rhodes, and Cr Kevin Walker - Deputy Chairman of CTW and Councillor at Cabonne Council.

Projects discussed included: raising the Lake Rowlands Dam wall to increase the capacity by four gigalitres; construction of a pipeline between Carcoar Dam and Lake Rowlands; and a new dam wall at Lake Rowlands approximately 2.5 kilometres downstream.

Consideration was given to the benefits of each project with respect to both agricultural and urban water usage, and the need to receive the support from all three levels of government before federal funding could be considered.

Mr Gee said “as water is typically the responsibility of the NSW Government, water security projects need to have an agricultural element in order for the Federal Government to get involved.”

Chair of CTW - Cr David Somervaille, said that they had been in talks with NSW Minister for Water, Melinda Pavey, who had expressed interest in regional water strategies. “We want to increase the total water storage to enable the Carcoar and Lake Rowlands Dams to capture three to four times the volume of water which goes over the spillway during the typical drought-breaking rain events,” he said.

Mr Gee acknowledged that the proposed projects had been well researched during the scoping and feasibility stages. “The proposed enhancements to the Carcoar and Lake Rowlands catchments have had the ground work

Molong Probus Club Last month our Probus Club had a short meeting after which we travelled to the Historic Errowanbang Woolshed to celebrate our birthday.

We were treated to a delicious lunch and Jim Troth did the honour of cutting the birthday cake, kindly made by Helen Balcomb.

Jann Harries, the owner, then took us on a guided tour of the Woolshed. It is an amazing achievement, given that it was built so long ago - its design was way ahead of its time.

“The next step is for the NSW Government to submit a funding proposal to the Federal Government through the national agency, The National Water Grid and I know that Central Tablelands Water will be talking to the NSW Government about that,” Mr Gee said.

Mr Gee continues to make water security a top priority for the Calare electorate. “I will continue to do whatever it takes to achieve an adequate and sustainable water supply for our communities,” he added.

“There is a real appetite for water projects at the moment and I’m very keen to make sure our region is front and centre when these discussions are taking place,” he said.

Ex-Services’ and Wentworth club members to vote on amalgamation Hundreds of members will decide whether to amalgamate Wentworth Golf Club with the Orange ExServices Club at an historic vote night on November 20.

The clubs will hold separate votes. They need more than 50 per cent of members present at each meeting to approve the merger for it to go ahead.

Details of the future for the amalgamated club, to be run by the OESC, have been revealed in a memorandum of understanding which is on public exhibition.

It is proposed the Wentworth venue be renamed Wentworth Sports Club with golf, and potentially bowls facilities, provided. (Central Western Daily)

Thank you to Allen and Yvonne Barnes who returned home to Molong with the stories of two locally born men whose stories they found in the historical records in the Longreach Stockmen Hall of Fame.

Does anyone have any knowledge of the families of these two bush blokes, born in Molong? The Express will be very grateful for any information.

Hugh Angus Hugh Angus, was born in Molong on 21 May 1841 to Glasgow school teacher Hector Angus and his wife Sarah (nee McMillan).

Hugh married Eliza Margaret Wright of Orange (date unknown).

He worked in outback NSW with bullock teams and wagonettes for approximately 15 years until 1891 when he and Eliza moved to Queensland with their 8 children who were all born in the bush with no help from doctors, anaesthetics or hospitals.

Hugh transported massive loads of wool and stores in the Charleville district. When the railway line was extended to Quilpie, they moved on to that

Harold Lance Reid

Harold Lance Reid was born in Molong on 29 November 1890 to George Reid and Jessie Colless, grandparents were George Colless and Ann Goodwin.

Known as Lance, he resided in Molong until 1897 when his father died. The 7 year old, already a proficient horseman, went to live with his aunty and uncle, Ned and Ethel Ruby in Rubyvale Queensland.

Young Lance at 9 years of age rode a long journey with his uncles droving a mob of cattle from Qld down to Cumnock NSW. He moved with the Ruby’s to WA in 1900 where he worked all kinds of jobs from offloading freight ships in Fremantle to handyman jobs. At 16 he bought a horse for 1 pound and left home to make his

Euchareena

Across Australia travellers sight the remains of small ‘bush’ churches sitting silently in paddocks, surrounded by fences, gum trees and She-Oakes whispering the stories of families of past - and those living eternally within the grounds.

These places of worship brought early settlers and generations of farming families and town dwellers together for what was once sacred Sunday worship and the opportunity to come together as a community.

Generations of change have suggested that these community built buildings are no longer needed today.

Standing alone, affected by weather and time these buildings, like the 3 in the Molong Anglican Parish located at Beri, Euchareena and Kerr’s Creek - have a new opportunity (depending on surrounding demographics/geographics) to be turned into interesting homes, community meeting places etc.

The Molong Anglican Parish Council have made a decision that because of lack of use - it is in the best interests of these 3 buildings to be officially closed and perhaps sold on to be used for other purposes. Invitation to attend ...

Kerr’s Creek own way with his horse working as a handyman in circuses, shows, entertainment industry etc. The man from Molong later died in WA after a hardworking and creative career using the bush skills he learnt along the way.

These include some marked as given by ‘Amaroo Friends’; the family of Corporal Samuel Tilling; Private James Farrell.

CTLX sheep and lamb report for 23/10/19

AGENTS YARDED 6750 LAMBS AND 4600 SHEEP Trade weight new season lambs made up the majority, along with a few pens of heavy weights in a good quality yarding.

There were limited numbers to suit the restockers. Most of the regular buyers were in attendance and operating.

Light weight lambs to the processors were $7 cheaper, Trade lambs were firm to $3 cheaper selling from $140 to $203, to average from 785c to 810c/kg cwt. Trade weight old lambs sold from $163 to $180/ head. Heavy weight lambs were up to $15 cheaper with the over 24kg new season lambs selling from $195 to $240/head. A few trade weight Merino lambs were firm selling from $136 to $165/head. Restocker and feeder lambs were $6 to $10 cheaper, Hoggets sold to $188/head.

Crossbred ewes made up the majority along with a few pens of well finished Merinos in a good quality yarding of mutton. The light and medium weight sheep were $13 to $15 dearer while the better heavy weight sheep were up to $22/head dearer with the better quality assisting in the rise. Carcase prices for the better sheep made from 570c to 640c/ kg cwt.

AGENTS YARDED 3360 It was a pretty good quality yarding with good numbers of yearlings to suit the feeder buyers and processors. Cows and grown heifers made up almost 50% of the yarding, though there were limited numbers of grown steers. Not all the regular buyers were present with the absence of a northern feedlot operator.

Young cattle to the trade were close to firm with the prime steer yearlings selling from 280c to 298c, while the prime heifer yearlings sold from 250c to 290c/kg.
