Showtime in Cabonne Returns There's good news and events to look forward to in September 2022 with the return of Cabonne Country's Agricultural/Community Shows.

These wonderful community shows have been missing since 2019 (for Molong) due to COVID. The fantastic news is that we hear on the grapevine that NSW State Government MLC, Sam Farraway has secured funding to help local show societies start up again.

Show Schedules are still being worked on by volunteers but what we do know is that the Molong Show will be featuring a firework display, a Jazz Band, competitions, awards, food, exhibitions, displays, where locals love to gather together. More news soon from President Colin Woodhouse about Molong's very missed event - but now back on the local calendar.

St. Vincent de Paul Molong Update

“We are lucky to have the Molong Pantry in town. Julie Spencer and the team of volunteers provide a much needed service in town and district. I don’t think we could survive without the Molong Pantry and the foods they are able to offer to help residents who are finding these times very difficult.

Vinnies Molong supports the Molong Pantry and we work in well together with some of our volunteers helping the Pantry services as well.

We do provide food vouchers to local and district residents. Whilst we can’t help with electricity bills Service NSW or the Salvos in Orange can help. Vinnies Molong can help with some other bills (e.g. rates).

We’re not sure about telephone bills right now as this could be changing.

We know that local people are worrying, in the same way as others across Australia - about food prices going up - electricity bills, interest rates. the price of petrol going up - and those affected by home rentals and any increases that may occur.

Vinnies is working in local communities, like Molong, to help support people in need and those finding these times challenging.

Any donations of blankets, doonas and winter clothing or financial donations are most welcomed.

Congratulations to the 95 volunteers of the Molong Yarn Market community enterprise who continually work, tirelessly, for the benefit of the Molong and District community.

The committee have planned a number of fabulous events of great interest to locals and visitors/tourists etc. There’s a lot on their new program to look forward to. See next week’s Express.

Julie Spencer “Molong’s Pantry continues to serve our local community as well as the surrounding villages with low cost essential grocery items, along with bread and what fruit and vegetables we have available. We have people coming from as far as Yeoval and Stuart Town.

Molong’s Pantry is open twice a week, once on Tuesday mornings from 8:30 till 10:30am then again on Saturday 10 to 12noon. We ask for a $10 donation in exchange for a basket of groceries from the pantry shelves.

We find those that use the pantry are so grateful and thankful for the difference it makes in their week and lives.

Everyone is welcome, if this would help you through your week the pantry is here for you.

As we journey with people we hear a lot of sad stories. Winter is difficult especially for those in our community who cannot afford to use heating.

The thing that I find the hardest to hear about is the lack of housing in our community combined with rising rental market pricing people out.

It’s not uncommon to hear stories of people who have been paying $200 a week for rent in Molong, who are now being asked to pay over $400 a week rent.

I never imagined homelessness would be a thing we face in our local community, but it’s a real thing.

Answering the phone to calls of desperation are hard to hear as families look toward homelessness.

I could not imagine having to live in a car or tent.

Fresh fruit and vegetables is something we love to be able to supply to those struggling who visit Molong’s Pantry.

But it is something we find hard to source.

We are so grateful to the locals who drop in their excess garden produce. We are also grateful to the ‘2nd bite program’ that allows us access to some older produce being removed from a supermarket in Orange. Also, to ‘Foodbank’ that sometimes has produce available.

This time last year we received a very generous donation which was for fresh produce to add to what we can offer.

It has been wonderful to have some money budgeted each week to allow us to buy fresh fruit and vegetables.

We would like to highlight this issue and ask if anyone would be willing to donate a one off payment that we could do the same thing in the year to come?

Whether it’s seeking proper environmental, cultural and heritage protections, Constitutional change, a comprehensive process of truth-telling, working towards treaties, or calling out racism—we must do it together.

It must be a genuine commitment by all of us to Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! and support and secure institutional, structural, collaborative, and cooperative reforms.

It’s also time to celebrate the many who have driven and led

change in our communities over generations—they have been the heroes and champions of change, of equal rights and even basic human rights.

Getting Up, Standing Up, and Showing Up can take many forms.

We need to move beyond just acknowledgement, good intentions, empty words and promises, and hollow commitments. Enough is enough.

The relationship between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non‑Indigenous Australians needs to be based on justice, equity, and the proper recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ rights.

$9,300 To get the ball rolling on playground upgrades at the Molong Bowling Club

Molong Bowling Club is set to receive a welcome upgrade with a $9,300 grant from the NSW Government to refurbish the Club’s playground area.

NSW Nationals Upper House MP Sam Farraway said the funding will help the Club to get back on its feet following the impacts of COVID-19 on patronage.

“The Molong Bowling Club is an incredibly valuable facility that brings together local families, sporting teams and volunteers from across the local community,” Yvonne Clyde, Sam Farraway, Ben Brown, Margot Brown & Paul Mullins Mr Farraway said.

It’s all good news in Molong.

Anthony Albanese has a lot on the go in the ‘back office’ of government Anthony Albanese will be on the international road again next week. He’ll be at the NATO summit in Madrid, where the war in Ukraine will obviously dominate the discussions, which will also canvass China and climate change.

Albanese, who earlier attended the QUAD in Tokyo and visited Indonesia, isn’t going to be a minimalist when it comes to spending time overseas.

International conferences give an opportunity for the new PM to meet multiple leaders, gather information and signal continuities and change (for example on climate policy) in Australia’s national priorities.

A just-elected prime minister must be careful in deciding how much foreign travel to undertake, especially when there are problems at home and many ordinary people are doing it tough on their cost of living. At some point, being away too much stirs criticism.

But with NATO inviting four non-member countries – Japan, South Korea and New Zealand, as well as Australia – it would have been a hard invitation to turn down.

The trip includes Paris, in the wake of the Labor government settling compensation for the aborted submarine contract. This stop does seem something of an indulgence, although it could give an opportunity to explore co-operation with France in the Pacific.

Albanese clearly also wants to visit Ukraine. He indicated on Wednesday this would depend on advice from Australian security agencies.

The PM has been equally peripatetic domestically.

He’s already been to all states and territories since the election.

Ministers have also been early overseas travellers: among them Foreign Minister Penny Wong, whose second home now seems to be the Pacific, and Defence Minister Richard Marles, who had what was seen as that (maybe) ice-breaking meeting with his Chinese counterpart in Singapore, before a visit to India.

A particularly important trip was Home Affairs Minister Clare O'Neil’s visit to Sri Lanka this week. One of Labor’s fears has materialised as people smugglers start to test the border. The government acted quickly, with O'Neil’s diplomacy and a $50 million humanitarian aid package for the country. Australia will also fund, as announced by the Coalition government, thousands of GPS trackers to be installed on Sri Lankan fishing boats.

The trickle of boats, none of which has reached the Australian mainland, is not serious so far, but the government knows the risks if it is not quickly cut off.

In general, we’re seeing the new government highly active on multiple fronts, driven by circumstances, particularly with the energy crisis, as well as by choice.

It was notable this week that after months of the former

government playing down COVID despite the significant number of deaths, Health Minister Mark Butler stepped up the messaging about vaccination and treatment, including launching a public campaign.

Beside the intense front-of-shop activity, a good deal of change is being set in train in the government’s back office, the public service.

Labor signalled in the campaign it wanted to remuscle the bureaucracy, after it had been run down and demoralised by the Coalition government.

Scott Morrison downplayed the bureaucracy’s advisory role, outsourced much of its work to consultants, failed to implement some of the more important recommendations of the Thodey review of the service, and arbitrarily sacked a number of departmental secretaries.

This week Albanese wielded a small axe of his own, removing the secretary of the Foreign Affairs Department, Kathryn Campbell (Penny Wong was no fan, and Campbell had a history with Robodebt), and the head of infrastructure, Simon Atkinson.

Immediately after the election Albanese appointed Glyn Davis to head his own department, indicating he’s determined to leave the public service in better shape than he has found it. Davis is a policy wonk with extensive administrative experience and a reform bent; he was a member of the Thodey review.

The changes this week reinforced the point. A former senior bureaucrat, Gordon de Brouwer, also a member of the Thodey review, is returning as “secretary for public sector reform”.

In this context, on Thursday night one of Australia’s most distinguished recent public servants had some advice. Frances Adamson is a former ambassador to China, served as foreign affairs adviser in PM Malcolm Turnbull’s office, and later headed the Foreign Affairs Department. Adamson – who is now South Australian governor – knows the bureaucracy inside out.

In an oration named in her honour, she outlined what she described as four “encouragements” and one “entreaty” to public servants.

They amount to an agenda for improvement.

First, she urged the full implementation of the Thodey review “in letter and in spirit”. The effect of the recommendations that were not taken up would be to give senior public servants more independence and protection.

Second, Adamson exhorted public servants to “think more broadly about our times and what they require of you”.

“This is a time for steadiness, for listening and consultation, close collaboration, and a renewed appreciation of and respect for expertise in policy development – whether on the economy, climate change, China or homelessness,” she

said.

“A time to grow that expertise in a purposeful way through recruiting and development and to share it widely. And, certainly, time for frank, fearless, wellinformed, creative and constructive advice.”

Her third “encouragement” related to the culture of the public service: the importance of fostering “a genuine sense of belonging that goes beyond the ways we typically think about diversity, equity and inclusion”.

“Belonging,” she said, “is about meaningful work, relationships, agency and accountability.”

Fourthly, Adamson stressed the importance of public servants having good relationships with counterparts in other levels of government. Although she didn’t go down this path, co-operation between federal and state governments will be vital if the Albanese government is to secure its aim of improving productivity.

Adamson’s “entreaty” was about integrity. “The 2022 election campaign should not leave us in any doubt about the importance the Australian people attach to integrity and the structures required to support it,” she said.

“Acting with integrity is how the service maintains the confidence and trust of the public. Indeed, integrity is one thing that does shift community attitudes and trust in government, so it is one of the tools that public servants have in strengthening public institutions.”

Adamson concluded that “the quality of public service contributes to a nation’s strategic weight […] Australia’s strategic weight in turn contributes to the stability, security, prosperity and development of our region and its character.”

The better the quality and robustness of the advice coming from the public service, the greater the chance of the Albanese government leaving the sort of “legacy” to which its prime minister says he aspires. (theconversation.com)

CWA Molong at the movies

On Saturday we had our Movie Afternoon at the Amusu Theatre at Manildra. We want to thank the theatre for hosting us, please check out their website for movies that are coming up.

Those who came along were welcomed by our two junior members at the snack bar selling some wonderful goodies before having a stroll next door to the Manildra Movie Museum which is full of wonderful movie memorabilia and objects from our past. We were delighted to watch Mary Poppins Returns on the big screen and everyone who came along had a wonderful time. We hope to do it again.

Molong Branch has also been thinking how we can bring the children together in some way for them to feel connected to their community. It could be in the form of hosting workshops to learn new skills or do an activity together. We are just in the thinking process of this and we wanted to put it out to our community for their thoughts.

Great roll up for First Aid Life Savers

Around, 35 people attended the Defibrillator Awareness Workshop last Thursday evening. Joined by local NSW Ambulance staff. St John Ambulance Cadets provided a demonstration of CPR and how to use the Defibrillator on a Trainer manikin.

The Cadets worked then with the audience through the process of Lifesaving CPR with most having a go on the manikin. The overall message was “Any attempt at cpr is better than none, so go on and have a go and now the equipment is there to support you”

Huge disc golf event comes to Molong

Saturday and Sunday of the coming weekend will see a huge field of Disc Golfers from across the country descend on Molong for the two-day Central West Cold Snap Disc Golf Tournament.

As Disc Golf continues to grow at a rapid rate across the country, Molong has taken a place as one of the most sought-after venues to play the sport, with this demonstrated by the fact that this weekend’s event has already filled to its capacity of 90 players – with a wait-list having to be formed of players who missed out on a spot.

Molong is now considered a destination Disc Golf venue with players now regularly travelling to Molong to experience our fantastic course.

“We have some of the best Disc Golfers from across the country joining us for this event” Tournament Director and local pro-player Kevin Costa reported.” We have a sizable number from Victoria, South Australia, Queensland and the ACT, as well as big numbers from Sydney, Newcastle, Dubbo and a healthy sized crew from here in the Central West. This includes some of the highest rated players in Australia.”

For the two-day event the course will be extended out to a full championship-level 18 hole layout, which occupies most of the grounds of the Molong Golf course and surrounds.

The Central West Disc Golf club have asked that golfers not use the Molong Golf course for these two days as the course will be full of disc golfers, showing their high-level skills on this challenging layout.

The Central West Cold Snap is also the second stop on the Western NSW Disc Golf Tour, which is currently being led in the Men’s Division by Newcastle’s Chris Hill and in the Female Division

by ACT player Alex Williams, both of whom will be in attendance over the weekend.

“We are super excited by the way in which Disc Golf has been embraced here in Molong, with visiting players always saying how much they enjoy coming here, playing our course and enjoying a warm welcome from the people of Molong” Kevin said.

This tournament is also a lead-in event to the NSW State Disc Golf Championships, which are being held here in Molong in October, with an expected field of between 150 and 200 players for the three-day event.

Events like these bring huge numbers of people and business into out beautiful little town and allow us to showcase all that Molong has to offer.

On Friday 24 June descendants of Harry and Florence Midgley gathered at the Molong Cemetery for two ashes internment ceremonies.

Both Thelma Midgley, daughter in law and David Murray, grandchild of Harry and Florence, were placed in the memorial wall, with other immediate descendants.

Harry and Florence are in the graves section.

Grandchildren of Florence and Harry Midgley They immigrated to 3 girls.( who are in the photo above. This family Australia in the 1920’s and moved to Molong where Harry was a builder moved away in about 1954.

All of the Midgley children attended school and 3 of their 4 children were born.

They lived in Gidley St, where Olive, Keith , in Molong . Olive, Keith and Hazel all married Hazel and John grew up.Harry died in 1941 and in Molong, and a number of their children have Florence took work as a railway cleaner. She left Molong as their birthplace.

Currently in the memorial wall there are 5 Molong in about 1954 and lived with her eldest daughter, Olive Beverley and her family, until descendants of Harry and Florence Midgley and 3 places have also been reserved. she passed away in 1958. J John and Olive Beverley(née Midgley)lived in Molong through the war years, with John being a teacher at Molong School while Olive raised the

Successful home games

JUNIOR SOCCER It was another successful home game at Hunter Caldwell with a few teams playing away at Cudal. The club is run by local volunteers and without the committee, coaches and helpers it wouldn’t be such a great club and run smoothly each week, we are always looking for more volunteers. If you are interested in soccer or want to be involved, please talk to a committee member.

U5 Condors Vs U5 Currawongs - Condors and Currawongs drew to play each other with a bit of a Club derby, with brothers Joe and Bobby Piggot up against each other. It was a closer game then everyone predicted but at the end of the game Soccer was the winner as they all had fun playing each other. Player of the Week for Condors was Gussy Keniry and Currawong’s Rhyleen Woods.

U5 Phoenix - Coached by Jac Staines - team were certainly showing some wear and tear from a long term on

Saturday. I think the expression “dropping like flies” was used well before the half-time mark. Despite the team all being tired and feeling the full impact of winter, they all had a go and managed a few laughs along the way.The kids are getting the hang of the game and improving a little more each week. They are even starting to score less goals for the opposition and more goals for us! They are a great little bunch, always cheering each other on and having a laugh.Player of the Match this week went to Ayrton, who played the whole game with a big smile and lots of effort. Gooooo Phoenix!

U6 Peewees - Coached by Tamra May-Brell had a great game on Saturday against Cudal. They worked amazingly as a team, passing the ball, scoring many goals and most importantly having lots of fun.

During the game Cudal really played well as a team with some great passing and ball skills but with Tate Bunting in goal they were unable to defeat Molong and the team came away with a win 3-1. Congratulations Magpies on a great win. 3 points to Tate Bunting, 2 points to Langdon Buckland and 1 point to Harry Lee. We have three weekends off for the July School Holidays. Our first game back will be on the 23rd July the draw is still to be updated so please check ODFC website. Have a great holiday.

Winter Solstice Nude Swim? Why not the Molong Pool?

by Rozzi Smith (Not representing the official view of the Express) When the Molong Swimming Pool is put to bed at the end of summer - there sits a pool of water with nothing better to do than catch the autumn leaves, and attract the cold frosty mornings. It Seems such a shame to see one of the town’s loveliest grounds and attractions sitting idle for at least 6 months every year. Some of our town’s best thinkers have thought about filling the pool with trout and holding fishing competitions over the winter months.

Some have wondered about the joyful thrill of winter swimming.

Well, here’s a better idea taking off across Australia.

Why not Molong? Why not the Molong Pool (without spectators!).

I reckon Molong should welcome next year’s winter solstice to town as a fun, friendly and very cold event?

- Hello hypothermia, shivery bodies, I say - and rule 1 strictly no looking sideways at other bodies enjoying one of the oldest events in nordic/arctic history.

Why not Molong? We love to have fun - don’t we? We enjoy something new (even a tad naughty!)? We love to see our town, steeped in charming, gracious history and to come alive in the dreaded winter months?

They say in country towns - we have to ‘work with what we’ve got!” Right, we have the Molong Pool (even the creek except ... yikes! leeches!). We have the day of Winter Solstice around 21 June - we have bodies ready for new challenges - and our town loves having fun!

Righto - we’ve got the right ingredients. Could the Molong Pool be any colder than the icy sea waters of Tasmanian’s Sandy Bay (photo below left)? Or Canberra’s Lake Burley Griffin. See (below right). Nope - nor does our pool have sharks, stingrays, octopus to escape from. NOR acres of weeds to trap our pinkies like in Canberra’s pristine lake.

The mighty Molong Magpies Wallas travelled to Forbes last Sunday 26 June 2022 for the Gala Day with U6 playing Cowra and Emus, U8 played Emus Green and Emus White and U10 played Emus Green and Emus White.

Under 6s are gaining momentum and their newfound confidence was on display on Sunday as they took on the Cowra Eagles and Orange Emus at the Forbes Gala Day. Unfortunately, the Under 6s had a few players away but that didn't stop their enthusiasm on the day. With players battling to get their hands on the ball, coach Mark Gavin commented that passing the ball out of the ruck will be the focus of the next training session.

Plenty of solo tries were made on the day with special mention to Lacey, Bobby and Matilda who were committed and consistent. Well done to Oliver Townsend who scored a length of the field try and showed great sportsmanship.

U8s were coming off a week where the team was decimated by illness. The boys dug deep and played well although looked slightly lethargic from the earlier illness. Guy, Lewis, Riley, Sam and Max had solid games as usual while Nic, Leo and Max are really starting to find their feet steeping up to the 8s. A notable mention to the player who has really started to come out of his shell which was Jack and he received this week’s player of the week.

The U10s had two great games of rugby against their big town rivals, Orange Emus Green and Orange Emus White. Molong were missing a couple of key players due to sickness and injury. This however didn't hold the Magpies back as they rose to the challenge facing both Emus sides with gusto and pride.

The first game saw a very even match up and the scoreboard constantly changed leaders.

With a renewed focus on tackling and tidying up around the ruck area, the Magpies ran out to deliver their best performance of the year in their second game of the day. It was a physical game and Molong should be proud of drawing with an Emus team that managed to defeat them only a couple of weeks ago. It was a great day of rugby in the warmer Forbes weather and the players families are very proud of the spirit this team plays with every week.

Players of the day were U6 Oliver Townsend for his sportsmanship, U8 Jack Piggott for his continued improvement and U10 Bobby Webb for all round effort around the park. The Toughest Player award went to Bobby Mitchell for his defensive effort.

A big thankyou again to the Forbes Club for hosting the day. No rugby over the next three weeks due to the school holidays with training recommencing on Thursday 21 July.

Locals talking about the return of a plain old Hamburger and Fish & Chip shop. “Like the Cassimaty’s, Mrs Bourke and Joan and Peter McFarlane used to make.” The Express noticed these photos on the Molong Central School’s facebook site of hospitality students being assessed on making a burger. Their favourite ingredients? Looks like white bread rolls, lettuce (Cos.of course) tomato, cucumber, cheese, meat. Maybe this market research can help an investor to come forward? Former bakery building??

Molong Bowls Saturday was to see the singles final between Craig Troth and Kevin Beatty played. But due to unforeseen circumstances the game will be played at a later date.

Sunday saw the pairs semi-finals between Ben Brown & Chris Beatty v’s Matt Fyfe and Mark Wicks. This was a great game, see sawing through out the 21 ends. In true style it came down to the last end to determine the winners.

Brown/Beatty came away victors with a 1-point win. The pair now will play the winner out of Kevin Beatty and Craig Troth v’s Brain Beatty and Hugh Foy. The Beatty crew certainly like to be in the thick of things in all games. One Beatty will be the finals victor no matter what.

The triples are to be played soon. The draw is being done, so watch this space for who you will come up against.

Ladies Consistency games will be played this weekend, both Saturday and Sunday. Games will commence at 10am Saturday. This is great for your game The Members draw of $450 didn’t go off on Saturday night, bad luck Margot. If you are a member of the club, come along on Saturday night. You might go home a little richer than when you arrived. This Saturday will be $475.

Congratulations to Scott Gosper who celebrated his 40th birthday at the club on Saturday night with family and friends. A good night was had by all. Cheers to the next 40 Scotty.

The popular EUCHRE NIGHT is back. Will be on the 15th July commencing at 7pm.

Please pay at the club before the end of June. If you aren’t a registered member, you are unable to play in club championships and pennants.

We were very fortunate to receive a grant from Sam Farraway – Member of the NSW Legislative Council and Minister for Regional Transport and Roads for $9,300.00. This will go towards rebuilding the playground area at the club. We thank Sam for this grant.

Another small roll up at Royal Molong golf course on Sunday saw one group of four play a twelve hole ambrose event and a group of three play a twelve hole individual stroke event. I think the group of four who played the ambrose event only decided on this format after hitting poor tee shots off the first tee. No winner was declared again.

The group of three certainly didn’t play very well. Because some things that happen on the golf course should stay on the golf course, no name shall be mentioned but one player had seventy six shots for twelve holes including one in the dam. This sort of golf is in the realm of “you should give the game away”.

Stubba was up to his old tricks off the seventh tee on Sunday except this time as it was about to go over the fence it ricocheted off a branch and landed on the fairway. Matt P. turned up with new golf shoes and blamed his poor round of golf on the fact that he was still breaking them in. The excuses some players come up with.

However, some players are making the trek to Cumnock golf course to play there on Sunday with arrival time at 9am and teeing off shortly after that. Anyone is welcome to join us.

Thanks to Bell for organising golf on Sunday and to Stubba, Bell, Ged and anyone else who has been working on the course.

The Veterans Golf Tournament is coming around shortly to be played at the Royal Molong golf course on Monday July 11th. At their last tournament played here in March there were fifty six players in attendance so hopefully we can attract similar numbers this time.
