Hay Yabbies hit the Molong track

A severe storm warning issued for Molong on Australia Day last Sunday actually happened.

Surprising the locals "Nah! Won't happen ...We've heard it all before." ... However, this time luck was on Molong's side with 90 ml (3.5 inches) of torrential rain recorded at the Railway Station in less than an hour.

100+ ml being recorded around the hospital hill and some areas within the township recording not much at all.

It was good to see the Molong Creek receiving a much needed 'flush'.

Unfortunately, as happens during long drought topsoil washed into a number of residences. See P4.

Molong is now 'on track' to take the title of the 'Yabby Racing Capital' ... of (NSW/Australia/the World) through the creative (and Fitzy's unique barrier design, Pg 2) ideas of the Molong Fishing Club members who held a brilliant Australia Day race meeting in the courtyard of the Freemason's Hotel.

Molong Probus Club The Molong Probus club invites new members to come along and join our Club. We meet at 10.00am at the Molong Bowling Club and our next meeting will be on 11 February.

At this meeting we will have our normal meeting then morning tea, after which we shall car pool to go over to Manildra Amusu Theatre

Just like the ‘old days’

(Above) Billy Wherrit’s home in Betts Street (East Molong) was inundated with mud when 90+ ml rain fell on the township in less than hour in the Australia Day storm. With the extreme drought conditions - soil was picked up in the storm from the paddocks above Betts Street - with thick mud flowing through some of the homes, gardens etc. Residents thank the Molong SES and Molong Rural Fire Brigade volunteers for their quick response in helping with the clean-up.

Cabonne Groups urged to apply for Community Assistance Grants Community groups in Cabonne are being urged to apply for Council grants to improve the “liveability” of their areas.

Applications are open for the second round of Cabonne Council's 2019-20 Community Assistance Program grants, which are designed to provide an ongoing or sustainable benefit to local communities.

In order to be eligible for the Community Assistance Program, applicants must be a not-forprofit organisation in the Cabonne Local Government Area and be undertaking a project on noncommercial facilities within the Shire.

Grounds where a happy group of locals and district residents came together to - well, simply be together to enjoy a traditional Aussie BBQ, Australian music, and to applaud the receivers of the prestigious Australia Day awards.

Is Molong prepared for climate change?

Last Sunday’s Australia Day deluge has added to the problem of lack of preparedness of locals to climate change.

It will be a sad outcome for Molong if the number of climate change sceptics are ‘still’ arguing the debate - when arguing the point (whatever it is) is well and truly over. Given the long drought we still live in, the extremity and destruction of the bush fires, both city and rural areas living in thick smoke from the fires, severe dust storms etc. etc. - It’s not over yet.

Today, we are living with the effects of torrential downpours, mud ... and still next to none in community and residential water harvesting methods in place.

What we have been living with in Molong (and some other towns, villages etc) are water restrictions like we have not seen before. Problem is that Molong has not acted on water harvesting opportunities - we have to. When the rains come ... we have to be prepared to store.

Local water resources? Can Molong continue to afford what has become a ‘boutique water supply’ ... this is - the quantity stored vs the high cost we pay for our town water supply. Should Cabonne Council

This is, for a town of 2,000+ people, a growing town, one that cannot live without water. As a community, we have to hop on board and work on this. Don’t leave the problem to Cabonne Council ... as a community it is up to each one of us to act. Ignoring today - and tomorrow ... is no longer an option.

The Molong Creek: Last Sunday we saw the effects of a storm (the kind we have not seen for some 50 years in Molong) where up to 100ml + rain fell in less than an hour. This will happen again, and surely again, again. This is part of the ‘new’ climate change symptoms/weather patterns we have been warned about for countless years. Can we be so silly?

Sally has been working for Central Tablelands Landcare Group as a support Officer/Coordinator for 10 years. Working with landholders to implement sustainable land management and biodiversity conservation in our region. She has applied for funding and management projects to help re-vegetate over 30 hectares of native trees and shrubs on people’s properties in the Central Tablelands. She has organised many amazing speakers to help with complex land management issues such as grazing management, erosion control and biodiversity enhancement.

Sally has been working with schools, including Molong Central School with a Dung Beetle Breeding program . This has been a great project trying to establish winter active dung beetles in our region. The kids have had a lot of fun learning about the important work these little critters do, recycling nutrients, improving soil health and competing with the flies by burying their food.

Sally is also involved in a nation wide monitoring program, building knowledge of dung beetle species, their distribution and behaviour.

Community Group of the Year Molong Hockey Club Molong Hockey Club is very lucky to have such a strong junior club that has passion and pride that is shown on and off the field. The Club has over 100 junior members playing hockey this year.

Starting with the U9's program, with around 40 players involved, it is the first time it has been possible for the program to be held in Molong.

Molong Hockey Club is continually growing.

This season there were seven junior teams from Open Primary to U14's playing in the Orange competition.

A proud achievement for the Club is through continued junior skills development. It has been able to form two Molong representative teams, something that has not been possible in the past as Molong junior players have had to play representative hockey with other associations.

Molong Hockey Club have four senior teams that are always competitive - one men's team and three women's teams.

Molong Hockey Club are a very proud club that likes to give back to the community. In 2019 they Linda Milne of the Molong Hockey Club were able to donate an electronic score board and with the help of Cabonne Council they now have an operating score board at the field.

Australia Day in Molong

For a number of years the Molong Australia Day official ceremony has been held at the delightful Rec. Grounds where locals have gathered to meet, greet and to celebrate together as a community.

Last Sunday saw once again a group of local and district residents coming together in the same location to enjoy what has become a simple country picnic style event.

A huge thank you must go to Mary Iffland who originally came up with the idea of Molong’s Australia Day to be held as a country style family picnic day and gathering at the Rec. Mary organised and ran this event for a number of years ... recently retiring to hand the event to a new group. Well done Mary - the town and district communities are very grateful for your marvellous initiative and dedication.

This year, a new committee ‘picked up the baton’ led by Helen Crisp of MAG and the Molong Show Society. With boundless energy Helen hopped in with the support of Helen and Colin Woodhouse and their team of volunteers to keep the event going.

It was a great day as locals and district residents came together to enjoy time together. There was music, Aussie foods, a Damper Competition and

Vintage cars. Bob Sullivan was MC again with awards presented by Cr. Paul Mullins of Cabonne Council (see P.5).

Guest Speaker was CWA District President, Jan Kerr with the Acknowledgment of Country delivered by Liam Bridges and Welcome to Country by Aunty Rita, Molong Wiradjuri Elder.

Jasmin Bond sang the Australian National Anthem with former Molong resident, Aileen Baker accompanying on the piano. Aileen later read Australian poetry. Geoff Tonkin, Anna Boersma and Rod Macksey performed Australian songs in their brilliant way.

Unfortunately, the cricket match had to be cancelled this year and some of the children’s events as well. But the new committee said that they will have their ‘feet on the ground’ better and in time for the 2021 event.

With a cool breeze blowing gently, and the Rec. grounds looking magnificent due to the care of Cabonne Council’s gardening team - it was a wonderful event enjoyed by all.

Carrots: Crunchy carrots are also my favourite. My mum and dad cut them into pieces so that they are easier to eat.

Earlier this week, young Lucy came into the Express to show us her new school dress and with the help of her sister Taylah (Year 8 MCS) brought in her pretty pink 'unicorn' lunch box to show us the food she likes to eat.

Due to food allergies, Lucy's food choices for school are fresh, simple and plain. And, less expensive than the pre-packaged glitzy sugar filled foods that tend to jump out at kids from the supermarket shelves.

"Taylah and I packed water melon, cucumber, green beans, carrot pieces, grapes, stawberries, home-made cookies, corn thins and a wrap with smashed avocado. I fill my school bottle with cold water" said Lucy.

"On my first day at BIG school my mum and dad will be taking me."

After that Lucy is looking forward to travelling on the school bus with her sister Taylah and brother Hayden and her new school friends.

"I'm looking forward to seeing my

new school friends ... and my preschool friends" said Lucy who likes reading ... "I can almost read Pig the Pug ... I can read the first bit of it" said proud Lucy at this great achievement. "I like painting as well ... I like painting houses".

The 2020 winners were Best Damper, Cameron Wild (award received by Sue Wild), followed closely by Lesley Bye with a special award made to last year's winner, Rhoma Hale. Brian, Margaret and Jonathan Dean of Molong Rotary were the judges who carried out the difficult decision "they were all wonderful dampers" said Brian.

The crowd attending the celebration all agreed as they munched into damper, covered in butter and Cocky's Joy for morning tea. Lesley Bye decided that the best damper of the day was the recipe in last week's Molong Express. Thanks Leslie.

Flowers by Kerry COMMUNITY ASSISTANCE PROGRAM GRANTS

Applications are open for the second round of Cabonne Council’s 2019-20 Community Assistance Program (CAP) grants, which are designed to provide an ongoing or sustainable benefit to local communities.

Applicants must be a not-for-profit organisation in the Cabonne Local Government Area and be undertaking a project on non-commercial facilities within the Shire.

Grants are provided on a 50:50 basis, but communities can provide their half of the funding through voluntary labour or in-kind contributions.

Applications for CAP funding close at 5pm on Friday 28 February 2020.

LANDMARK TABLELANDS LIVESTOCK CTLX Sheep and Lamb 22.01.2020

Numbers were down by 700 for a plainer quality yarding. There were odd pens of good trade lambs and heavy weight lambs mixed throughout though a large percentage of the yarding consisted of lightweight lambs suitable for the restockers. All the usual buyers were in attendance and operating.

Light weight lambs to the processors were $5 dearer with the 12 to 18kg 2 scores selling from $85 to $140/head.

Trade lambs were $4 to $8 dearer with the new season lambs selling from $136 to $192/head to average from 760c to 790c/ kg cwt. Trade weight old lambs sold from $144 to $187/head. Heavy weight lambs were around firm with the new season lambs over 24kg selling from $184 to $225, while the heavy weight old lambs sold to $215/head. Lambs to the restockers and feeders were $4 to $6/head dearer. The better lambs to the restockers sold from $95 to $159, while

the feeders paid from $132 to $174/head.

Very young lambs to the restockers sold down to $30/head. Hoggets sold to $178/ head.

It was a good quality yarding of sheep where most grades were $11 to $13/head dearer. Merino ewes sold from $40 to $196 while crossbred ewes sold from $53 to $229/head. Merino wethers sold from $55 to $190/head. Carcase prices for the prime sheep made from 590c to $635c/ kg cwt.

CTLX Cattle 28.01.2020

It was a good quality yarding with good numbers of young cattle to suit both the feeders and trade buyers. There was also a pretty good selection of well finished grown steers and heifers and once again there were large numbers of cows and their young calves. A full field of buyers were operating in a solid market.

A Forbes district restocker purchased a top quality pen of two four and six tooth Angus heifers paying 286c/kg. Cows were 10c to 14c dearer with the 2 scores selling from 181c to 230c/kg. The better 3 and 4 scores sold from 214c to 279c with the prime heavy weights averaging 261c/ kg. Bulls sold to 300c/kg.
