Tony Lloyd never misses an ANZAC Day service and march. This year was even more special for the Molong grazier and former shearing contractor when grandaughter Isabella invited her special grandfather to stand with her at dawn at the front gate of the family property, Gundawanna. As the sun rose, Isabella played the Last Post and the Reveille on her saxophone with Tony delivering the Ode and both standing together in one minute's silence to remember. "I was very proud of Isabella for organising what was a very special ANZAC Day service for me" said Tony. "She is a wonderful young woman".

Tony28later phoned eeting April 2020 his old school friend, David Pearce of Canowindra to remember ANZAC Day 70 years ago when as members of the King's (School) band, the two mates marched together in Sydney with David playing the bass drums and Tony the bugle.

Library & Concept Community Centre Plans P6 design released

Following a series of workshops with key stakeholders in the community a final concept design has been produced for the new Library and Community Centre in Molong.

The final concept, titled Option D, has captured the needs and expectations of the community uncovered during the workshop process, then aligned these expectations within the allocated construction budget.

The final concept design provides the layout, elevations and functionality of the building to move the project on to the next phase of detailed design and approvals.

A development application (DA) is required to be lodged with preliminary planning works underway in preparation for submission in June 2020. At the DA submission stage, there will be further opportunity for public viewing and comment

Council adopts Draft Operational Plan & Budget Cabonne Council on Tuesday adopted its Draft Operational Plan and budget for 2020/21 including rates and annual charges adjustments.

Council’s budgeted operating income is $41.6 million made up of Rates and Annual Charges of $14.7 million, Capital Grants and contributions of $4.7 million, Operating Grants and contributions of $12.7 million and User Charges of $8 million.

Operating expenditure is $42.7 million, which includes $11.1 million of depreciation, Employee costs of $13.9 million, Material & Contracts of $12.7 million. Capital expenditure and major works is $22 million of which $8 million is on road construction and $4.5 million on stimulus in particular community interest projects.

Rates and Annual Charges Rates will increase by the rate peg limit of 2.6%, equating to an increased collection of $346,894.

Waste and Recycling bin collection service will also increase by 2.6% or $10.10. The water and sewer access charges will increase by CPI at 1.7%.

A typical annual residential bill in Molong would be as follows: 2019/20 2020/21 Increase Rates $465.89 $478.00 $12.11 Domestic Waste $ 387.30 $ 397.40 $10.10 Stormwater $ 25.00 $ 25.00 $0 Water access $ 391.20 $ 398.00 $6.80 Sewer $ 610.90 $ 621.30 $10.40 Water usage fees, which are in addition to the above will also increase by 1.7%.

The Council will publicly exhibit the Plan from Monday 4 May to Sunday 31 May 2020 on Council’s website www.cabonne.nsw.gov. au, a link to the website will also be posted on

Council’s Facebook page.

The public are invited to make submissions during this time. Any submissions will be considered at an Extraordinary meeting of Council to be held on Tuesday 9 June 2020.

This budget and operating plan has been prepared to give the Council direction in pursuit of its objectives and play a major role in ensuring its long term financial viability. It has also been developed in the context of the current global COVID-19 Pandemic with a view to ensuring that Council and the Community of Cabonne have a positive outlook for the coming financial year, with Council operations gainfully employing staff and initiatives and capital projects stimulating economic activity across the Local Government Area.

Council also adopted a draft Rates and Charges Hardship Assistance Policy for ratepayers suffering from the effects of natural disasters.

The current COVID-19 pandemic has been determined as a natural disaster.

The policy enables people to feel comfortable in approaching Council about outstanding debts, so that debt does not become unmanageable.

It aims to reduce legal costs to Council and the ratepayer by reducing the amount of debt that is referred to debt collection agencies.

The policy encourages a consistent and proactive approach in identifying and assisting ratepayers who may be experiencing difficulty paying their rates and charges and enables more appropriate ways for Council to seek payment of rate arrears other than through the legal system.

by Tara June Winch "I know it's easy to pick up a domestic book or a thriller, I know there is a reluctance for readers. Hopefully with my awards, if they mean anything, hopefully it's that here is a cracking yarn and to trust there is a story there." Tara June Winch talks about 'The Yield'.

Novelist Tara June Winch bought a fancy new pair of shoes and scrawled her acceptance speech on a paper towel from the bathroom when she won a NSW Premier's Literary Award for new writing more than a decade ago.

During the tumultuous years that followed her acclaimed 2006 debut Swallow the Air – as she raised her daughter alone, lived in poverty and coped with the tragic death of her brother – Winch always kept the medallion she won.

Now, she'll have more to add to the collection.

Winch's second novel, The Yield, has swept this year's awards, claiming three prizes: Book of the Year, Christina Stead Prize for Fiction and People's Choice Award.

But Winch, 36, who lives a few hours outside of Paris in France, didn't have to worry about buying fancy new shoes this time, as the ceremony on Sunday night was digital due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Yield follows August Gondiwindi as she returns to the fictional Australian town of Massacre Plains for the funeral of her muchloved grandfather, Albert ‘‘Poppy’’ Gondiwindi.

Knowing his death was near, Poppy had started compiling a dictionary of Wiradjuri words. The entries tell the story of the silencing of Indigenous people, but they are also a powerful reclamation of Indigenous voice and language.

Writer's Note of Encouragement to Book Lovers : "My book is based on real events and people and was painful for me (to write)" said Tara Winch who is of Wiradjuri heritage. "But I hope that my 2020 NSW Premier's Literary Awards win, as well as being shortlisted for the Stella Prize, will encourage more people to read Indigenous literature.

"It's going to be painful every time I write about Australia. There's a reluctance for the writer to write about this horror and there is also a reluctance from readers," Winch said.

"As much as there has been a good reception, I know it's easy to pick up a domestic book or a thriller, I know there is a reluctance for readers.

Winch said her joy at winning three prizes was tempered by the awareness that many writers, publishers and booksellers are facing deep financial hardship due to the coronavirus.

"I think we have got to stick together. It's about commitment, it's about supporting each other through this. It's really important and that's what these awards are about. It's celebrating each other's works, celebrating the shortlist, everyone who published a book or put on a play, and encouraging each other to keep working," she said.

Library & Community Centre Meeting 28 April 2020 concept design

The concept layout shows a gross floor area of 864 square metres, split into three distinct areas of the community centre, being: • Auditorium Area of the auditorium is increased from that currently (133m2) and is now 299m2, with increase area also in the green room, accommodating dedicated changing areas.

• Library Library is 143m2, which in consultation with New South Wales Libraries, is sufficient to meet the requirements of the Peoples Places Guidelines and funding requirements. This is being deemed appropriate given when additional common areas being used by the library are incorporated, they combine to meet the guideline specification of 190m2 floor space.

• Support Area Provides kitchen, storage and toilet amenities.

It is envisaged that elements within the existing kitchen will be able to be utilised within the new kitchen of the Cabonne Community Centre.

Your Country Your Voice FEDERAL MEMBER FOR CALARE ANZAC DAY 2020 - LEST WE FORGET This year, communities across the Central West commemorated ANZAC Day differently.

Even though I wasn’t able to visit many of our Calare communities due to the social distancing rules, my thoughts were still with each of them and those who served.

It was wonderful to see the special ways in which our community commemorated Anzac Day across our electorate, from hand-made poppies in gardens, to music in driveways, I felt very proud to be Australian.

Members of the Bathurst and Orange RSL Sub-branches (pictured above) kindly laid these wreaths on my behalf at the Cenotaph and Carillon.

Pictured right is Peter Leotta, Vice President of the Gulgong Sub-branch laying a wreath on my behalf at the Gulgong Soldiers Memorial.

Thank you to all Sub-branches which assisted in the laying of our wreaths and those of many others around the region.

LATEST COVID-19 NEWS COVIDSAFE APP The Australian Government has now released it's COVID-19 app. I have to confess, I was skeptical about the app when it was first announced. Bureaucrats and also governments tend to like getting information about their citizens and this is often not a positive thing. Who needs more bureaucrats looking over your shoulder?

However it looks like there has been extensive work carried out on this app and safeguards installed to protect peoples' privacy. Amongst other things, the information that the app provides can only be used for the purposes of COVID-19 contact tracing; it is encrypted; and any contact data stored on your phone will be automatically deleted after 21 days. The information is only used if someone you come into contact with is diagnosed with COVID-19. While ordinarily, I would not be loading this app onto my phone, I will be making an exception in these circumstances.

The Coronavirus has proved devastating for peoples' health, and also for the health of our economy. The economic cost to Australia from this continuing shutdown is enormous. Our kids and grandkids will be paying off the debt. The sooner we can get businesses open and Australians back at work, the better.

I love my country and I hate seeing it on it's knees economically and it is for that reason that I will be downloading this app. Giving out a small amount of personal information that can only be used in very limited circumstances is a price I'm willing to pay to get us back on our feet sooner.

Faye and Colleen taking a one and a half arms length apart stroll in the sunshine last Sunday. The popular local ladies stopped to admire the colourful wreaths and bouquets of flowers that local residents and organisations placed on Molong’s ANZAC Memorial on the Village Green. Sipping coffee from BP Servo as they walked both commented to the Express “Molong is a wonderful place”. The Express agrees!

Imogen Nancarrow shares her Pop’s story @ an ANZAC Day ceremony at Molong’s St. Joseph’s Primary School “Good Morning teachers, Parents and fellow students. Today I would like to talk to you about my Pop who served in World War 2.

His name was Edward Thomas Prosser, most people called him ‘Ted’.

He was born 12.7.25,. He grew up in lithgow. He did not like Lithgow because it was cold and damp all the time. His family at the time owned and raced grey hounds.Ted worked in the coal mines, one day he got his finger chopped off by a mine trolley. He had 1 brother and 2 sisters.

He was his Mum’s favourite kid out of all of them. When he told her that he was going to war, she didn’t want him to go. She wanted him to stay with her at home, but she couldn’t do anything about it. He had already enlisted himself to go into war. He had always wanted to go to Darwin and even live in Darwin, so when he went to war he wanted to go to the tropics. Ted was 19 when he went to war. He was in the war for 2 years.

He was posted to New Guinea-Borneo and he was in the air-force as a Leading Aircraftsman.

His battalion had to make Artillery and drop it out of the plane. He had loads of other jobs too. One of them was to collect the people who have died in the jungle. One day they went to collect the people who had died but Pop had left his drink bottle somewhere else. His friend said he would go and get it for him. His friend got shot while going to get his drink bottle. He never forgave himself because his friend never got to live the life he has which made him really sad.

The friend was so young and Pop often blamed himself for this accident.

After the 2 years at war, Pop came home and married my Nan. They had nowhere to live so they stayed in Army camps until the government built the returned soldiers homes to live in. My

Aunty Rosalie was born in the camp. The camp buildings had long walls, and the walls didn’t touch the roof. Inside of the houses were a couple rooms, kitchen and living room.

There were ramps everywhere that all led up to a communal shopping centre. All the kids would play in Billy carts and push each other down the hill. It was located at Herne Bay, Riverwood, New South Wales.

Every morning there would be a mass and everyone would go.

After the war, my Pops parents bought the Jamberoo pub in New South Wales.

Pop spent lots of time there helping his family run the pub. It was a beautiful old pub that is still famous today for its history and great atmosphere. Pops mum used to make all the cakes and sell them to the district, everyone loved her cakes!

My Pop unfortunately died of cancer when William and I were 3 months old so I didn’t get to know him very well but I know he loved me very much. If he was still alive he would be 95 in July.

Baked Macaroni Cheese - a yummy winter warmer STOP: You MUST ask an adult to help you make this delicious Macaroni Cheese ...

1. Melt 4 tablespoons butter in a large saucepan over medium heat 2. Whisk in a quarter of a cup of ‘All Purpose Flour’. Heat together. whisking for 2 mins.

3. Whisk in 2 cups of milk.

4. Add 1 bay leaf and a pinch of nutmeg plus 1 teaspoon of salt. Simmer occasionally until thick (about 8 minutes).

5. Remove the bay leaf and stir in 2 cups of cheddar cheese.

6. Stir in the pasta with a little of the cooking water to make a loose sauce.

7. Butter a 2 quart baking dish - add the misture and top with half a cup of cheese.

Bake for 15 minutes.

Note: The whole family will love this dish served plain or add fried bacon for a delicious meal.

13/06/1937 – 24/04/2020 Robert (Rob) Burgess, 82 years, peacefully passed away Friday, 24 April 2020 at home. Loving husband to Joanna and father to Jody and Linley. Adored grandpa to Aimee, Nessa, Sharik and Jemma. A kindred spirit with Mee-Lin and beloved brother and uncle to all his family.

Rob was a life member of the Faulconbridge Rural Fire Brigade and active committee member of the Molong division of Orange Legacy.

Cattle numbers lifted and the quality was mixed with a lot more individual lots.

There were some very good yearlings and cows penned, while trade cattle and heavy grown steers, and heifers remain very limited in numbers. There was extra competition on cows with the return of a northern buyer.

The market sold to a consistently stronger trend. Weaner steers to restockers sold from 400c to 500c, and heifers reached 430c/kg. Yearling steers to feed were overall dearer with the more popular bred lines to feed making from 380c to 410c and secondary lines from 355c to 385c/kg. Most heifers to feed sold from 340c to 383c/kg. Trade yearling steers sold to 402c, for the short supply and heifers made to 400c/kg. Heavy grown steers sold to 327c/kg.

Lamb numbers increased and quality was good for the trade lambs which were showing top condition. There were mainly trade weights penned along with some heavy lambs and the secondary and store grades were limited in supply. All the buyers were operating in a generally firm market.

Light lambs to the processors sold from $145 to $170 while store lambs sold from $175 to $201, down $1/head. Medium and heavy trade weight lambs were firm and averaged from 900c to 930c/kg cwt.

The 22 to 24kg heavy trade weight lambs sold from $203 to $216/head.

Heavy weight lambs were firm to slightly cheaper and averaged from 830c to 880c/kg cwt. The heavy weight lambs sold from $215 to $225 while the extra heavy weights sold from $228 to $240/ head.

Mutton numbers increased and quality varied while prices were firm for the medium grades and slightly dearer for heavy weight sheep.

Medium Merino ewes sold from $125 to $160 and averaged 670c to 700c/kg cwt while heavy weight first cross ewes sold from $185 to $251/head or 700c to 730c/ kg cwt.
