Australia Day 2022 award nominations open now

We have seen a lot of changing circumstances throughout 2021, but Cabonne hopes to celebrate outstanding members of the community for Australia Day 2022, with award ceremonies to be held across the shire in January (pending COVID restrictions).

The Australia Day Awards are open to Cabonne community members who are Australian citizens, and who have made a noteworthy contribution or achieved something outstanding in their work, studies or community service during the current year, or over a number of years. With people and businesses constantly adapting to extenuating circumstances around them, this year is sure to garner some incredible nominees.

Each village has the opportunity to have one recipient recognised from each of the following three categories: Citizen of the Year Award – For a person who has demonstrated excellence in their field or service to the community through their work or voluntary activities.

Young Citizen of the Year Award – For a person under 25 years of age who may be considered an inspirational role model and who has served their community through their school, work or voluntary activities.

Community Group of the Year Award – For a group who has made an admirable contribution to the community.

In addition, the following categories will award one recipient (individual or group) for the entire

Cabonne region: Cabonne Environmental Champion of Year – For a person or group who has been an advocate for good environmental practices within the Cabonne community.

Sportsperson of the Year – For a person who demonstrates sportsmanship qualities and is an active member of a sporting club.

Daffodil Day - Flower Power and thoughtful children When the bright yellow daffodils spring from the soil - this group of young children remember the special women in their lives - their grandmothers and other women who continue to softly spread warm rays of love like a soft floral blanket across the lives of their families.

The announcement of the Cancer Council’s 2021 Daffodil Day fundraiser saw Millie, Mackenzie, Rosie, Hattie and their caring friends talking together on Zoom figuring out what they could do to raise money for Breast Cancer Research.

“It’s an important day” said Millie who lost her two grandmothers Essie Sullivan and Maree Pearce to Breast Cancer.

“We’ve raised $1800” said Mackenzie the grandaughter of Penny Mitchell.

Hattie and Rosie helped to make dozens of cup-cakes (with Daffodil Yellow icing) - all made in their individual home kitchens.

“We talked to each other on Zoom” said Rosie

who was pleased to help . “People collected their cakes from us at the Railway Station” said Hattie. Well done to Millie, Mackenzie, Rosie, Hattie and their helpers and parents who all worked together, COVID Compliant, to support Breast Cancer Research.

The Express photographed these gorgeous local kids as they were walking home with their mum, Emily after collecting their ‘home school’ learning materials.

Mason was keen to head home to start his pre-school ‘assignment’.

His sister, Arabella wore her lovely beads and took her doll and pram along to help carry her pre-school crafts and learning assignment home.

Big sister Thea was eager to head for home to start her Grade 2 assignment from the Molong Central School.

New lights for the Molong Rec

A project to replace the lighting at the Dr Ross Memorial Recreation Ground (“The Rec”) in Molong is due to commence in the coming week.

This $400,000 project, jointly funded through the Australian Government’s Building Better Regions Fund and NSW Government’s Stronger Country Communities fund, will see the installation of four new lighting towers at The Rec. Replacing the current 25-metre-high lighting structures, the new lights will stand 30.5 metres high. The 1200-watt light fixtures on each pole will allow for 300 lumens on the playing surface. Pleasingly, while this meets the cricket and rugby standards for game lighting, the technology will mean a reduction in light spill affecting residents.

Not only is this great news for the sporting teams and spectators in Molong, but it also opens up The Rec for a whole host of events and activities that can be held after sunset, including night markets, cricket night games and music shows.

The current COVID-19 restrictions have meant that The Rec hasn’t been utilised to its full potential in the last few months, but the new lighting will ensure the facility is ready for the future.

Markets Cancelled 4 October 2021

Central West Electrical Contractors have been successful in securing the tender to undertake the installation of the lights. Works will commence in early September, with trenching and preliminary works. The new light towers are due to be erected in early December.

ADF vaccination clinics come to Calare - removalists appear in Court

Over the next two weeks, Australian Defence Force personnel will establish pop-up vaccination clinics across 8 locations in Calare.

ADF Vaccination Outreach Teams will commence their tour of the Calare electorate on Monday 30 August, setting up clinics in Mudgee and Gulgong.

The Teams will set-up in Canowindra on 1 September, followed by Eugowra on 2 September, and Rylstone on 4-5 September. On Monday 6 September, the ADF will fan out to deliver jabs in Orange, Bathurst, and Kandos.

Federal Member for Calare, Andrew Gee, said the ADF Vaccination Outreach program has been a success, dramatically boosting vaccination numbers in Western NSW. “For the past week, Defence Force personnel have been administering jabs in Dubbo, Bourke, Warren, Parkes, Brewarrina, Narromine, Peak Hill, Trangie, and Forbes,” said Minister Gee. “There’s every possibility the Delta strain could still spread like wildfire across the region, so I’m calling on residents who have yet to put their name down for a vaccination appointment to attend your local ADF popup clinic, where no bookings are needed.”

“With case numbers in the region continuing to climb, and repeated extensions of the lockdown in regional NSW, getting the jab is the only way we can claw our freedoms back from the grip of the virus.

“Because the vaccines are proving to be effective, and with vaccination rates amongst older Australians now high, we particularly need to get more under 50s

Molong Advancement Group held its meeting on 12 August 2021 just prior to the lockdown of the region due to the Covid 19 outbreaks. Those present agreed to wait and see what evolved with the Covid 19 outbreak in our region before making a decision on the October Molong Markets. However, as the outbreak has worsened the decision has been made to cancel the Markets.

All stallholders are being advised and invited to participate in the first markets scheduled for Monday 18 April 2022. We anticipate these

being spectacular as they will be the first held since Easter 2021 Prior to this latest Covid 19 outbreak Molong proved itself as a destination of interest with many travellers diverting off the highway into Bank Street and Gidley Street to experience what Molong has to offer. MAG aims to support business houses to bounce back. To do this MAG has created a Business Houses Engagement Officer position. Kathy Farlow has accepted this position and will engage more fully with businesses as restrictions are eased.

MAG wants your ideas

As recently reported in the Molong Express, Cabonne Council has allocated $19,530 to Molong under the Village Enhancement Fund and MAG is the conduit for communication of the projects to Council for funding.

MAG is seeking ideas from community members about projects that can be proposed.

Ideas already identified include

“By the end of the campaign, the ADF will have run vaccination stations in 33 areas of Western NSW. “I had my second AstraZeneca dose just over a month ago, and, especially during this Delta wave, I feel glad that I am fully covered,” said Mr Gee. As of Monday Orange’s active case numbers remain at 15 after no new cases were recorded in the 24 hours to 8pm on Monday night.

Across the Western NSW LHD, 54 new cases were recorded, with Bathurst and Wellington both identifying five each.

There were no new cases for Blayney or Cabonne, too.

There has been no new sewage detections across the region.

COVID-19 scare when they visited Molong appeared in court. Three men allegedly travelled from Sydney to the region despite one being told he was COVID-19 positive.

Maryo Shanki, 21, and 27-year-old twin brothers Ramsin Adil and Roni Shawka were working as removalists when they drove from south-west Sydney to Molong in July.

NSW Health had informed one of the men he was infected with COVID-19 but the three men are accused of continuing the trip despite the notification.

The men’s solicitor Hugh Salter told the court that the men’s English was “not great” and he sought more time to seek directions from them.

The case was adjourned until September 13.

Australians are encouraged to buy a badge, bear and other merchandise during Legacy Week to support the partners and children of veterans who lost their lives or have been seriously injured serving our country.

Minister for Veterans’ Affairs and Defence Personnel Andrew Gee said Legacy Australia has played an important role in the veteran community for the last 98 years.

In the trenches of the Western Front during the First World War, an Australian Digger said to his dying mate, “I’ll look after the missus and kids”. This became known as The Promise.

“The Promise has been kept since Legacy was formed in 1923, and Legacy continues to support Australian widows, their families and children following the loss or injury of their loved one,” Minister Gee said.

“Today, Legacy Australia supports 43,000 families including children, widows and dependants with a disability right across Australia providing practical assistance through advocacy, counselling, medical, and social support.

“Fundraising efforts first known as ‘War Orphans’ first began during the Second World War to raise funds for the widows and children of soldiers who did not return. Today, this appeal is known as Legacy Week.

“Since then, Legacy has become a fundraising force providing much needed support.

“Legacy is currently caring for tens of thousands of widows who have lost their loved ones and been affected by their partner’s service in the Korean War, Malayan Emergency, Vietnam War, as well as campaigns in Iraq, Afghanistan and in peacekeeping operations across the globe.

“Normally our Australian Defence Force personnel volunteer to sell Legacy badges across the country. However this year, numbers will be considerably reduced in line with state and territory COVID-19 guidelines, which makes raising vital funds a real challenge.

Legacy’s Badge Day is Friday 3 September and donations can be made at their website legacy. com.au. Legacy merchandise, including badges, can be purchased online at the Legacy shop, legacyshop.com.au.

Wyangala Dam Overflows mixed feelings

The Chair of the Central NSW Joint Organisation Cr John Medcalf has mixed feelings about Wyangala Dam overflowing over the weekend.

“On the one hand it is a magnificent thing to see that amount of water flowing into the Lachlan Valley. On the other it is both a wasted opportunity and a potential flood risk,” said Cr Medcalf.

“The two things we know about climate change is that it will get hotter and drier with massive storm events in between,” said Cr Medcalf.

“This means we need to capture and sensibly manage as much water as we can. The raising of the wall at Wyangala Dam needs to push on. The next drought is just around the corner,” said Cr Medcalf.

“The Mayors of this region have worked together through the past two droughts; working cooperatively to solve our water security issues.

We have won national awards for our work. There are two key findings from our work: water security, especially for towns needs multiple sources and we need more storage,” said Cr Medcalf.

“It was so pleasing to see the State Government’s election commitment to raising the wall at Wyangala Dam and both the Deputy Premier and Minister for Water reiterating this support at the recent Board meeting,” said Cr Medcalf.

“The Lachlan Valley has such poor water security for all its users and the raised dam wall will turn this around while managing the flood risk,” said Cr Medcalf.

New Explosives Regs Not Acceptable to Firearms Community

The Hon. Robert Borsak, MLC and The Hon. Mark Banasiak, MLC, of the Shooters Farmers anf Fishers Party met with the Minister for Better Regulations policy team this week to discuss the unsatisfactory changes proposed to the Explosives Regulations 2021.

Mr Borsak told the bureaucrats that the SFF would move a motion of disallowance of the Regulation when Parliament returns unless they made several significant changes to the proposed regulations.

The issues discussed included the 12 kilograms per licence holder limit of propellant powder.

The new requirement will be a maximum of 12 kilograms per residential address. The reduction of dealers licenced storage of propellant powder from 300kg down to 200kgs, and the lack of clarity surrounding these changes.

“We demanded the evidence that backed up these unnecessary proposed changes to the regulation, that will significantly impact licenced firearms owners, gun shops, farmers and sporting shooters like clay target shooters and pistol shooters,” said Mr Borsak.

“There is no clarity around these limits, we asked if these included primers and loaded ammunition, and received a response that it did not. However, we requested that the wording be clarified with specific exemptions.

“We are now waiting on the evidence that supports these regulation changes and the rationale behind these new requirements.

“Supply of gunpowder is limited; it can be tough to get.

“The SFF’s concern is that these regulations will make it more difficult for licenced firearms owners to buy gun powder, and there will be a continuous decline in quantities each time there is a regulation change, which usually occurs every 5 years or so,” said Mr Borsak.

As COVID’s third wave worsens, Scott Morrison pivots to the future Josh Frydenberg is Scott Morrison’s house guest at The Lodge – sharing, in Canberra’s lockdown, microwaved meals and watching “Yes, Prime Minister”.

As he recounted domestic life with Scott, the treasurer was inevitably asked whether he’d measured up the curtains.

Among the ministers, Frydenberg and Health Minister Greg Hunt have carried the frontline burdens during the pandemic. For Frydenberg – the biggest-spending federal treasurer in the nation’s history – the experience can be viewed as a test for future leadership.

Although there’ve been mistakes – JobKeeper had design flaws which led to serious waste – he has come through creditably in extraordinary circumstances.

Frydenberg, who is also deputy Liberal leader, has never hidden his ambition and is hungry for the top job. But he is also loyal. Morrison knows that, unlike prime ministerial predecessors Tony Abbott and Malcolm Turnbull, he doesn’t have to look over his shoulder, even in the bad times. Morrison marked three years as PM this week, and there has been no white-anting.

There’s more than one path to the prime ministership for Frydenberg. If Morrison loses the election, Frydenberg would be favourite to become leader of the opposition. But that’s the start of a very rocky road; hard work and high hopes can be dashed, as Bill Shorten found.

An alternative path is to be well placed vis-a-vis your internal competitors and inherit the post when it becomes available, one way or another.

If the Coalition is re-elected next year, would Morrison serve a full term, or is it possible he might leave triumphant after a couple of years, not risking the gamble on a third election “miracle”?

Frydenberg knows Morrison’s moving on in a smooth transition would be his best prospect.

The prime minister this week was in full campaign mode for the March or May election and we had a glimpse of the formidable fighter we saw in 2019.

In a week when the NSW government lost control of COVID, the state’s daily new cases rising above 1,000 and hospitals under severe strain, and with Victoria on the brink, Morrison made a dramatic pivot to focus on opening the country.

Embattled NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian was firmly in step, making it clear she’s determined to move when the 70% vaccine target is reached (meanwhile announcing some minor easings).

It seemed incongruous that as the third wave deepened and with only a third of eligible people fully vaccinated, Morrison simply left the bad news behind and headed for the ground on which he wants to stand. In his Thursday news conference, for example, he began by hailing “another day of hope”, based on the latest vaccination numbers.

Morrison, backed by research, judges most voters have had enough of lockdowns and blocked internal travel.

A poll published

by Nine this week showed 54% believed Australia could not completely suppress COVID, and more than six in ten favoured opening up once the Lukas Coch/AAP target vaccination thresholds were reached. In the second year of the pandemic, public opinion appears to have swung from preoccupation with the health response to a strong desire to return to more freedom.

While Morrison pivots when in political trouble, Anthony Albanese this week looked to be lumbering. With the PM accusing the opposition leader of undermining the national cabinet’s exit plan, Albanese knew he had to get himself out of that corner. He stressed support for the plan, but his demeanour was that of a man on the back foot.

The defiant premiers of Queensland and Western Australia are in an easier short-term position. WA’s Mark McGowan, in particular, with his stratospheric popularity, can tell Morrison to go jump, as in effect he did this week. After the PM invoked “The Croods” film to say we must emerge from the cave, McGowan played heavily to West Australians’ parochialism and angst towards the east.

Bill, The Ventriloquial Rooster

"Bill, the Ventriloquial Rooster" is a sketch story by Australian writer Henry Lawson. The sketch is one of many to include Jack Mitchell the swagman as its main character and narrator. The story concerns a rooster that Mitchell's family once owned, named Bill, who was unknowingly ventriloquistic and always yearning to fight other roosters.

“WHEN we were up country on the selection, we had a rooster at our place, named Bill,” said Mitchell; “a big mongrel of no particular breed, though the old lady said he was a ‘brammer’—and many an argument she had with the old man about it too; she was just as stubborn and obstinate in her opinion as the governor was in his. But, anyway, we called him Bill, and didn’t take any particular notice of him till a cousin of some of us came from Sydney on a visit to the country, and stayed at our place because it was cheaper than stopping at a pub. Well, somehow this chap got interested in Bill, and studied him for two or three days, and at last he says: “‘Why, that rooster’s a ventriloquist!’ “‘A what?’ “‘A ventriloquist!’ “‘Go along with yer!’ “‘But he is. I’ve heard of cases like this before; but this is the first I’ve come across. Bill’s a ventriloquist right enough.’

“Then we remembered that there wasn’t another rooster within five miles —our only neighbour, an Irishman named Page, didn’t have one at the time— and we’d often heard another cock crow, but didn’t think to take any notice of it. We watched Bill, and sure enough he was a ventriloquist. The ‘ka-cocka’ would come all right, but the ‘co-ka-koo-oi-oo’ seemed to come from a distance. And sometimes the whole crow would go wrong, and come back like an echo that had been lost for a year. Bill would stand on tiptoe, and hold his elbows out, and curve his neck, and go two or three times as if he was swallowing nest-eggs, and nearly break his neck and burst his gizzard; and then there’d be no sound at all where he was—only a cock crowing in the distance.

“And pretty soon we could see that Bill was in great trouble about it himself. You see, he didn’t know it was himself—thought it was another rooster challenging him, and he wanted badly to find that other bird. He would get up on the wood-heap, and crow and listen— crow and listen again— crow and listen, and then he’d go up to the top of the paddock, and get up on the stack, and crow and listen there. Then down to the other end of the paddock, and get up on a mullockheap, and crow and listen there. Then across to the other side and up on a log among the saplings, and crow ‘n’ listen some more. He searched all over the place for that other rooster, but, of course, couldn’t find him. Sometimes he’d be out all day crowing and listening all over the country, and then come home dead tired, and rest and cool off in a hole that the hens had scratched for him in a damp place under the water-cask sledge.

“Well, one day Page brought home a big white rooster, and when he let it go it climbed up on Page’s stack and crowed, to see if there was any more roosters round there. Bill had come home tired; it was a hot day, and he’d rooted out the hens, and was having a spell-oh under the cask when the white rooster crowed. Bill didn’t lose any time getting out and on to the wood-heap, and then he waited till he heard the crow again; then he crowed, and the other rooster crowed again, and they crowed at each other for three days, and called each other all the wretches they could lay their tongues to, and after that they implored each other to come out and be made into chicken soup and feather pillows. But neither’d come. You see, there were three crows—there was Bill’s crow, and the ventriloquist crow, and the white rooster’s crow— and each rooster thought that there was two roosters in the opposition camp, and that he mightn’t get fair play, and, consequently, both were afraid to put up their hands.

made up his mind to go and have it out, even if there was a whole agricultural show of prize and honourable-mention fighting-cocks in Page’s yard. He got down from the wood-heap and started off across the ploughed field, his head down, his elbows out, and his thick awkward legs prodding away at the furrows behind for all they were worth.

“I wanted to go down badly and see the fight, and barrack for Bill. But I daren’t, because I’d been coming up the road late the night before with my brother Joe, and there was about three panels of turkeys roosting along on the top rail of Page’s front fence; and we brushed ’em with a bough, and they got up such a blessed gobbling fuss about it that Page came out in his shirt and saw us running away; and I knew he was laying for us with a bullock whip. Besides, there was friction between the two families on account of a thoroughbred bull that Page borrowed and wouldn’t lend to us, and that got into our paddock on account of me mending a panel in the party fence, and carelessly leaving the top rail down after sundown while our cows was moving round there in the saplings.

“So there was too much friction for me to go down, but I climbed a tree as near the fence as I could and watched. Bill reckoned he’d found that rooster at last.

The white rooster wouldn’t come down from the stack, so Bill went up to him, and they fought there till they tumbled down the other side, and I couldn’t see any more. Wasn’t I wild? I’d have given my dog to have seen the rest of the fight. I went down to the far side of Page’s fence and climbed a tree there, but, of course, I couldn’t see anything, so I came home the back way.

Just as I got home Page came round to the front and sung out, ‘Insoid there!’ And me and Jim went under the house like snakes and looked out round a pile. But Page was all right—he had a broad grin on his face, and Bill safe under his arm. He put Bill down on the ground very carefully, and says he to the old folks: “‘Yer rooster knocked the stuffin’ out of my rooster, but I bear no malice. ’Twas a grand foight.’

“And then the old man and Page had a yarn, and got pretty friendly after that. And Bill didn’t seem to bother about any more ventriloquism; but the white rooster spent a lot of time looking for that other rooster. Perhaps he thought he’d have better luck with him. But Page was on the look-out all the time to get a rooster that would lick ours. He did nothing else for a month but ride round and enquire about roosters; and at last he borrowed a game-bird in town, left five pounds deposit on him, and brought him home.

And Page and the old man agreed to have a match— about the only thing they’d agreed about for five years.

And they fixed it up for a Sunday when the old lady and the girls and kids were going on a visit to some relations, about fifteen miles away— to stop all night.

The guv’nor made me go with them on horseback; but I knew what was up, and so my pony went lame about a mile along the road, and I had to come back and turn him out in the top paddock, and hide the saddle and bridle in a hollow log, and sneak home and climb up on the roof of the shed. It was a awful hot day, and I had to keep climbing backward and forward over the ridge-pole all the morning to keep out of sight of the old man, for he was moving about a good deal.

“Well, after dinner, the fellows from roundabout began to ride in and hang up their horses round the place till it looked as if there was going to be a funeral.

Some of the chaps saw me, of course, but I tipped them the wink, and they gave me the office whenever the old man happened around.

“Well, Page came along with his game-rooster.

Its name was Jim. It wasn’t much to look at, and it seemed a good deal smaller and weaker than Bill.

game-rooster at all; Bill’d settle it in one lick, and they wouldn’t have any fun.

“Well, they brought the game one out and put him down near the wood-heap, and rousted Bill out from under his cask. He got interested at once. He looked at Jim, and got up on the wood-heap and crowed and looked at Jim again. He reckoned this at last was the fowl that had been humbugging him all along.

Presently his trouble caught him, and then he’d crow and take a squint at the game ’un, and crow again, and have another squint at gamey, and try to crow and keep his eye on the game-rooster at the same time. But Jim never committed himself, until at last he happened to gape just after Bill’s whole crow went wrong, and Bill spotted him. He reckoned he’d caught him this time, and he got down off that wood-heap and went for the foe. But Jim ran away—and Bill ran after him.

“Round and round the wood-heap they went, and round the shed, and round the house and under it, and back again, and round the wood-heap and over it and round the other way, and kept it up for close on an hour. Bill’s bill was just within an inch or so of the game-rooster’s tail feathers most of the time, but he couldn’t get any nearer, do how he liked. And all the time the fellers kept chyackin Page and singing out, ‘What price yer game ’un, Page! Go it, Bill! Go it, old cock!’ and all that sort of thing. Well, the gamerooster went as if it was a go-as-you-please, and he didn’t care if it lasted a year. He didn’t seem to take any interest in the business, but Bill got excited, and by-and-by he got mad. He held his head lower and lower and his wings further and further out from his sides, and prodded away harder and harder at the ground behind, but it wasn’t any use. Jim seemed to keep ahead without trying. They stuck to the woodheap towards the last. They went round first one way for a while, and then the other for a change, and now and then they’d go over the top to break the monotony; and the chaps got more interested in the race than they would have been in the fight—and bet on it, too. But Bill was handicapped with his weight.

He was done up at last; he slowed down till he couldn’t waddle, and then, when he was thoroughly knocked up, that game-rooster turned on him, and gave him the father of a hiding.

“And my father caught me when I’d got down in the excitement, and wasn’t thinking, and he gave me the step-father of a hiding. But he had a lively time with the old lady afterwards, over the cock-fight.

“Bill was so disgusted with himself that he went under the cask and died.”

The ambiguous answer within the lyrics of this song reveals that “the answers are blowin' in the wind.”

Flower power was a slogan that started in the USA used during the late 1960s and early 1970s as a symbol of passive resistance and nonviolence. It was rooted in the opposition movement to the Vietnam War.The expression was coined by the American Beat poet Allen Ginsberg in 1965 as a means to transform war protests into peaceful affirmative spectacles.

Hippies embraced the symbolism by dressing in clothing with embroidered flowers and vibrant colors, wearing flowers in their hair, and distributing flowers to the public, becoming known as flower children. The term later became generalized as a modern reference to the hippie movement and the so-called counterculture of drugs, psychedelic music, psychedelic art and social permissiveness.

The term "Flower Power" originated in Berkeley, California, as a symbolic action of protest against the Vietnam War. In a November 1965 essay titled How to Make a March/Spectacle, Ginsberg advocated that protesters should be provided with "masses of flowers" to hand out to policemen, press, politicians and spectators. The use of props like flowers, toys, flags, candy and music were meant to turn anti-war rallies into a form of street theater thereby reducing the fear, anger and threat that is inherent within protests.

In particular, Ginsberg wanted to counter the "specter" of the Hells Angels motorcycle gang who supported the war, equated war protesters with communists and

had threatened to violently disrupt planned anti-war demonstrations at the University of California, Berkeley.] Using Ginsberg's methods, the protest received positive attention and the use of "flower power" became an integral symbol in the counterculture movement.

By late 1966, the Flower Power method of guerilla theater had spread from California to other parts of the United States. The Bread and Puppet Theater in New York City staged numerous protests which included handing out balloons and flowers with their anti-war literature. Workshop in Nonviolence (WIN), a magazine published by New York activists, encouraged the use of Flower Power.

In May 1967, Abbie Hoffman organized the Flower Brigade as an official contingent of a New York City parade honoring the soldiers in Vietnam. News coverage captured Flower Brigade participants, who carried flowers, flags and pink posters imprinted with LOVE, being attacked and beaten by bystanders. In response to the violence, Hoffman wrote in WIN magazine, "Plans are being made to mine the East River with daffodils. Dandelion chains are being wrapped around induction centers.... The cry of 'Flower Power' echoes through the land. We shall not wilt." On the following Sunday, WIN activists declared Armed Forces Day as "Flower Power Day" and held a rally in Central Park to counter the traditional parade. Turnout was low and, according to Hoffman, the rally was ineffective because guerilla theater needed to be more confrontational. In October 1967, Hoffman and Jerry Rubin helped organize the March on the Pentagon using Flower Power concepts to create a theatrical spectacle. The plan included a call for marchers to attempt to "levitate" the Pentagon. When the marchers faced off against more than 2500 Army national guard troops forming a human barricade in front of the Pentagon, some demonstrators held out flowers and a few placed their flowers in the soldiers' rifle barrels.

How a vial of Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine travels from a lab in Missouri to an arm in Bangladesh [or Australia] Inoculating the planet from COVID-19 presents an unprecedented logistical challenge like none we’ve seen before.

Mobilizing for a world war may be the closest comparison – but in this case, the enemy is invisible and everywhere.

Some of the vaccines require super-cold storage at virtually all points along the journey until they reach someone’s upper arm. And the vaccines are primarily being produced in wealthier countries, though the need – especially now – is greatest in the poorest.

While many rich countries such as Israel, Canada and those of the U.K. have managed to inoculate most of their citizens, the vast majority of people overall have yet to receive a single dose.

I have been studying global supply chains for over two decades, including those for drugs and other health-related products. To illustrate the process and how complicated and challenging it is, I’ll take you on the journey of a single dose of Pfizer – which received full Food and Drug Administration approval on Aug. 23, 2021 – all the way from a factory in Missouri to an arm in Bangladesh.

From Missouri to Massachusetts to Michigan Even though it’s commonly known as the Pfizer vaccine, it was actually developed under a partnership with BioNTech, which is based in Germany.

It is one of two vaccines that use new mRNA technology, which provides genetic instructions that encode a viral protein. Once the vaccinated person’s cells start making the coronavirus protein, it prompts their immune system to design powerful antibodies that can neutralize the virus if they ever encounter it.

A vaccine dose’s 60-day journey to distribution starts with raw ingredients in a Pfizer factory in Chesterfield, Missouri, a suburb of St. Louis. This factory produces the key raw material called plasmids, which are basically strands of DNA that contain the genetic instructions for building coronavirus proteins.

Bottles of the DNA material are frozen, bagged, sealed and packed into a container

and shipped to Andover, Massachusetts.

There, the DNA is processed into mRNA, which is the active ingredient in the vaccine – also referred to as the “drug substance.”

The mRNA is packaged in plastic bags – each containing enough material to produce 10 million doses – frozen and shipped to Kalamazoo, Michigan, where the vaccine reaches the last stage of the process: formulation and filling.

First, the drug substance is combined with lipid nanoparticles – basically fat – to protect the mRNA and help it enter the human cells. Next, the combination is squirted into glass vials, six doses per vial, packaged and frozen for distribution.

Here I have presented a simplified threestep process. Making a vaccine, however, is more much complex, requiring more than 200 different materials supplied by factories spread across the world.

Keeping vials super-cold While awaiting distribution, the Pfizer vaccine vials must be stored at temperatures from minus 112 F to minus 76 F (minus 80 C to minus 60 C) in ultracold freezers.

To put this in perspective, the average annual temperature at the South Pole is about minus 58 F (minus 50 C). Ice creams and frozen steaks are kept, during storage and transport, below minus 20 F (minus 29 C).

Pfizer designed its own custom cooler box to make it easier to transport its vaccines across the U.S. and around the world. Vials are placed into trays, with 195 vials per tray. Each box can fit five trays.

Each box of 5,850 doses has a GPS tracker and contains a monitor that keeps a log of the temperature.

Pfizer’s custom boxes don’t require any other specialized equipment to transport the vaccines, and the ultracold temperature in the cooler boxes is maintained during transport using dry ice that needs to be replaced every five days.

A problem with the dry ice is that it’s carbon dioxide in solid form. The dry ice gradually turns from solid to gas, which can be dangerous without proper

ventilation.

Once it has a shipment ready for delivery to a given destination, Pfizer contacts one of the global freight carriers it’s partnered with, such as UPS or DHL, which picks up a designated number of boxes and ships them directly to the country in need within one or two days.

A vial’s last mile For a country to receive Pfizer vaccines, it needs to have the capacity to store ultracold medical items.

While this isn’t a problem for wealthier nations, poorer countries are less likely to have the necessary infrastructure in place.

Upon arrival in a country, the shipment goes into a deep freezer, typically at the airport or a central storage facility, until it is ready to be used. The vaccine has to be kept in ultra-cold storage until within about a month before it’s injected into someone’s shoulder.

In poorer countries that do have the right infrastructure, such as Bangladesh, distribution still needs to be restricted to a few select hospitals in large urban areas where there are ultra-cold storage facilities. For example, Bangladesh will use Pfizer vaccines at seven hospitals in its capital city, Dhaka.

The frosty journey of the Pfizer vaccine itself is just one part of getting people their jabs. Ancillary supplies needed for vaccination include special syringes delivering a 0.3-milliliter (mL) dose, needles, sterile alcohol pads and personal protective equipment for the health care worker delivering the shot.

Preparing the injection of the Pfizer vaccine requires a complex dance. First the nurse thaws the vaccine in a refrigerator to a range of 36 F to 46 F (2 C to 8 C), where it can be held for up to 31 days. Just before vaccination, the nurse brings the vial to room temperature of 36 F to 77 F (2 C to 25 C), at which it can survive no more than six hours.

Because the Pfizer vaccine is shipped as a concentrate, the nurse needs to dilute it with 1.8 milliliters of saline, resulting in a mixture sufficient for six doses.

There’s a further complication in that

many low- and medium-income countries use syringes that ensure a fixed maximum dose and are automatically disabled after single use. This takes away the guesswork and prevents mistakes. UNICEF is responsible for delivering these extra supplies to poorer countries that are getting their vaccines through COVAX, the global initiative set up to distribute COVID-19 vaccines to low- and middleincome countries.

A monumental achievement Other vaccines have much less demanding cold supply chain requirements, don’t require dilution and use syringes with standard dose sizes, allowing more countries to use them, including in rural areas.

Most of the COVID-19 vaccines approved for use by the World Health Organization, such as those made by AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson, require only standard cold storage of 35.6 F to 46.4 F (2 C to 8 C).

I focused on Pfizer in part because it makes up the lion’s share of doses donated by the U.S. to COVAX. As of Aug. 22, 2021, a total of 4.97 billion COVID-19 vaccine doses had been administered, a feat unimaginable in the fall of 2020. But global coverage has been highly uneven. While a little over half of the population in high-income countries have been vaccinated, only 1.4% of lowincome populations have received theirs.

Many of these countries are in Africa.

The development of several vaccines, 10 of which are WHO-approved, many within a year, was a monumental achievement of science and global collaboration – especially since it previously took on average a decade.

But creating supply chains to deliver all those lifesaving vaccines to people all over the world will be an equally remarkable accomplishment.

Regardless of the national plan to which they agreed, McGowan and Annastacia Pałaszczuk have the

constitutional and political authority to handle their states’ transitions as they see fit. But they can’t get away from the fact they’ll have to make the journey, relaxing border restrictions, at some stage.

As New Zealand is now finding, a zero-COVID position, however assiduously pursued, seems an impossible dream over the longer term.

Without the sharp motivators of big outbreaks, WA and Queensland have vaccination rates lower than the national average, and health systems that haven’t been stress-tested under maximum COVID pressure. WA, selfsheltered for so long, would be especially vulnerable if there were a big outbreak.

At the national level, one political unknown is what the public reaction will be in the difficult transition period ahead. Will sentiment change again when there are more hospitalisations and deaths as we reopen, albeit with some continuing safeguards?

With the length of the current extensive lockdowns unknown, it is not clear whether by election time we’ll have had, or have escaped, another recession. We know this September quarter will be negative but the December quarter could go either way.

Two consecutive quarters of negative economic growth (the economy shrinking) is taken in technical terms to be a recession. AMP economist Shane Oliver says there is a 45% chance of negative growth in the June-quarter figures, which will be released next Wednesday. If that happened a recession would be certain.

At the election the economy and fiscal policy will be central issues. If we are as “open” as the prime minister foreshadows, the government will need to have plans for when and how it would start fiscal repair.

For Morrison and Frydenberg, this will be another pivot point. Many will be watching carefully how much agility the treasurer can show.

Sport Molong Golf Sunday Mixed Royal Molong golf course on Sunday saw fourteen players play twelve holes. Upon arrival you are paired with someone waiting or with the next arrival and off you go and then leave straight after your game. It certainly doesn’t have the social aspect we are used to but it’s great that we are still able to have a game.

This week’s winner was the Ghost Walker with Quinney the runner up followed by Jye. Unfortunately Al couldn’t maintain last weeks form and finished towards the back of the field.

He lost three strokes off his local handicap for winning last week so that may have played on his mind. I suspect the Ghost Walker will suffer a loss of three strokes from his handicap when he next plays. It’s always a surprise when he wins because his swing is so bad he looks like a caveman killing his lunch.

Here are some instructions for the male golfer preparing to play his round of golf : Back straight, knees bent, keep feet shoulder width apart, form a loose grip, keep your head down, avoid a quick backswing, stay out of the water, try not to hit anyone, don’t stand directly in front of others, quiet please while others are preparing to go, don’t take extra strokes. Very good. Now flush the urinal, go outside and tee off.

The golf course has brand new markers for the men’s and ladies tees and there are new pegs to be put out marking the one hundred and fifty metre distances from each green. Thanks to Quinney, the club and anyone else involved in organising these markers.

Sunday is Father’s Day but because we finish golf so early we are going to have a game, 8.30am for 9am.

· Mouse numbers could rise again this spring · Farmers should be alert for signs of increased mouse activity · State and Australian government programs can help farmers Mouse numbers in Australia could rise again, depending on rainfall in coming months, as the weather warms in spring.

Minister for Agriculture and Northern Australia David Littleproud said there were several options for farmers impacted by the mouse infestation.

“We’ve had good rain and are looking at a bumper harvest, and unfortunately these conditions are perfect for mice,” Minister Littleproud said.

“Taking action early will be important to keep mouse numbers down.

“It’s important that farmers get out into the paddocks to look for damage or other signs of mice such as active burrows, and to act at the first signs of activity.

“The Grains Research and Development Corporation produces material and information to help with mouse management, including printable chew cards for monitoring mouse

There were reasonable numbers of young cattle to suit the feeders and only limited numbers to suit the trade buyers. There were a few pens of grown steers and heifers and there were 100 cows yarded. Most of the usual buyers were in attendance and operating.

Young cattle to the trade were up to 10c cheaper on quality. Prime vealers sold from 500c to 550c, while the prime steer yearlings sold from 460c to 524c/kg. Prime heifer yearlings sold from 442c to 542c/kg. Feeder steers and heifers were up to 12c dearer, with the feeder steers selling from 455c to 566c, while the feeder heifers sold from 455c to 534c/ kg. Young cattle to the restockers remain strong with young steers selling from 548c to 691c/kg.

Grown steers and heifers were around firm, with the prime grown steers selling from 440c to 469c, while the prime grown heifers sold from

activity.

“But there is support available for farmers who have had their businesses impacted by mice.

“The first port of call is your relevant state and territory authorities who have been on the frontline of the on-ground management of these infestations, and this hasn’t changed.

“Since January this year, the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority has issued seven emergency use permits to support mouse control.

“On a broader level, the Farm Household Allowance is available to affected farmers.

“And farmers can also access tax concessions.

Primary producers may be able to claim an immediate deduction for capital expenditure on fodder storage assets, such as silos and hay sheds.

“I also encourage the use the MouseAlert app which can help notify producers about changes in mouse activity.”

CTLX SHEEP 25 August Following yesterday’s cold and wet conditions numbers were back considerably today at CTLX Carcoar. It was a mixed yarding with a few pens of fresh new season lambs along with the odd pen of heavy weight old crossbred and Merino lambs. There was also a reasonable number of plain Merino cross lambs, a number of which were passed in. Not all the regular buyers were operating due to the small yarding.

Light weight lambs to the processors were $15 cheaper on quality with the 12 to 16kg lambs selling from $100 to $124/head. Trade weight new season lambs were firm, selling from $186 to $241/head to average between 920c and 1,015c/kg cwt. Trade weight old lambs were $3 to $6 dearer selling from $150 to $245/head. Heavy weight lambs were also dearer with those over 26kg selling from $279 to $310/head to average 1,015c/kg. Heavy weight Merino lambs sold from $252 and $290/ head. Young lambs to the restockers were up to $14 dearer selling from $114 to $165/head.

Hoggets sold to a top of $230/head.

There were just 640 mixed mutton yarded where most grades were $6/head dearer.

Merino ewes sold from $138 to $185 while crossbred ewes sold from $110 to $220/head.

Merino wethers ranged between $115 and $170/head.
