Molong residents facing ban on outdoor watering Molong residents could be facing a ban on all outdoor watering unless there is significant rainfall within the next three to four weeks.

With Molong Creek Dam falling to one of its lowest levels in many years, Level 4 water restrictions are likely to be implemented in Molong next month.

Level 4 restrictions prohibit all external watering.

The level of the dam, which provides the town’s water supply, has dropped

to 43.6% and is approaching its lowest level of 37% in 2001.

With no flows in the Molong Creek, there have been no measurable inflows into the dam, which means all water being used in Molong is not being replaced.

Cabonne Council is calling on all residents to conserve water as much as they can and will continue to monitor water use to determine when tighter water restrictions will be implemented.

Substantial rain is needed in the catchment to increase the level of water in Molong Creek Dam. However, flows into Molong Creek will not improve greatly until Lake Canobolas, which is upstream of the dam, begins to overflow.

The Gilmore family’s Tattykeel Meat Sheep and Cattle stud farm has returned from the Sydney Royal Easter Show with a historic haul of awards.

For the first time ever, the Black Springs-based stud took out supreme interbreed breeders group awards in both the ‘meat sheep’ and ‘beef cattle’ categories.

In the sheep section, the Tattykeel stud won for their famous Poll Dorset sheep while in the cattle section, they won for their Angus breeds.

Tattykeel stud owner James Gilmore said it was a momentous achievement for the farm.

“Taking out breeders group awards in both sheep and cattle is something we’ve never been done before,” Mr Gilmore said.

Blayney THE fact that almost three million overnight visitors stayed in the Central West last year who spent upwards of $1.2 billion is absolutely no accident, tourism experts say.

Tourist numbers to the region have jumped by 13 per cent year-on-year, while the amount they spent spiked by 25 per cent.

Data from the latest National Visitor Survey has ranked Central NSW as the 14th most visited spot in Australia during 2018 based on overnight visitors.

Last year 2,884,000 overnight visitors stayed in the region, this was up 13 per cent on the 2,545,000 who came to stay in 2017.

During 2018 they spent $1.2 billion in the region, this was up significantly (25 per cent) on the $970 million they spent during 2017.

Destination Country and Outback NSW Tourism Network general manager Lucy White said these numbers were no surprise and were the result of a concerted and collaborative effort by all levels of government, tourism operators and business. - From The Blayney Chronicle

Progress of construction on the Recycled Water Scheme is moving along steadily, with the final concrete pour for the new recycled water reservoir along Nash Street taking place earlier this month.

The reservoir is being constructed as part of the Recycled Water Rising Main (RWRM) project, which also includes the construction of three pump stations and a 12km purple pipeline.

“Parkes is so lucky to have this infrastructure being built,” Cr Bill Jayet said.

“It’s a really exciting project, and it’s reassuring to know that the sporting ovals and facilities in Parkes will stay nice and green during times of drought.”

The reinforced concrete reservoir is being constructed adjacent to the decommissioned sewage works on Nash Street.

Mudgee

A proposed amendment to Mid-Western Regional Council’s Development Control Plan (DCP) to specifically include provisions for solar energy farms, is currently on public exhibition to seek community feedback.

Councillors voted unanimously at their April meeting to place the draft document out for a 28-day submission period.

The report was recommended to council by the Manager Statutory Planning “following a substantial increase in development enquiries relating to solar energy farms within the region both from proponents and members of the community”. The DCP provides planning and design considerations for a variety of development types when a Development Application is submitted. But there are currently no guidelines in place for solar energy farms. ­— from the Mudgee Guardian

An illegal hunting trip on Good Friday has resulted in police issuing an infringement notice to a Central West man.

NSW Police state rural crime coordinator Detective Inspector Cameron Whiteside said the incident occurred on April 19.

“Police from the Rural Crime Prevention Team issued an 18-year-old man from Molong with an infringement notice for the offence of Enter Private Land to Hunt,” he said.

Operation Ambush is an ongoing operation being conducted by the Rural Crime Prevention Team that targets illegal hunting and trespassing offences in the western region.

“The operation was a great success and highlighted the unit’s ongoing commitment to protecting landholders from persons illegally entering their properties and hunting without permission,” Det Insp Whiteside said.

During the operation, legal action was taken against various individuals for hunting without permission, dog offences, driving and drug offences.

“Police also conducted stock inspections, business inspections on licensed premises and random breath testing,” Det Insp Whiteside said.

Members of the NSW DPI Hunting team were also deployed in support of the operations.

These types of operations are an ongoing strategy for Rural Crime Investigators.

Forbes Nominations have closed and there are just four candidates for the federal seat of Riverina, which includes Forbes, for the May 18 election.

The Nationals’ Michael McCormack drew the number one spot on the ballot paper, followed by the Greens’ Michael Bayles, Labor Party’s Mark Jeffreson and United Australia’s Richard Foley.

On Wednesday, Mr McCormack reminded constituents about his work in improving infrastructure, health and economies across the electorate.

“I’ve been delivering for the Riverina since I was elected in 2010,” he said.

“You only have to look at the record amount of funding that we’ve invested in hospitals, in schools. “[There is a] 25 per cent increase in the Roads to Recovery funding for each of the 12 local government areas that I represent.”

UAP candidate Richard Foley said the party has “policies I believe are going to fundamentally transform this country”.

Daily Liberal, CWD, other regionals, change hands

Australian Community Media, the company that owns the Daily Liberal, has announced that it will officially change hands by July this year.

In the Liberal of April 30, the company reported that Nine, who acquired Australian Community Media (ACM) in its merger with Fairfax in late 2018, announced on Tuesday the sale process had found a buyer in former Domain chief executive Antony Catalano and Thorney Investment Group.

The new owners paid $115 million in cash and $10 million in advertising to Nine for the company, beating out rival bids from equity firms Allegro Funds and Anchorage Capital Partners.

ACM staff were told on Tuesday morning.

“The sale of ACM is aligned with our strategy to exit non-core businesses and to focus on Nine’s portfolio of high-growth, digital assets,” Nine chief executive Hugh Marks said.

“We will retain a commercial relationship with ACM and look forward to continuing to work with the business in areas where there are mutual benefits to both Nine and ACM.” ACM includes regional NSW publications the Narromine News, Nyngan Observer, Parkes Champion Post, Forbes Advocate, Blayney Chronicle, Cowra Guardian, Central Western Daily and Western Advocate, as well as the Liberal among its 160 titles nationally.

The group also includes two other metropolitan titles in The Canberra Times and Illawarra Mercury and agricultural publications The Land, Stock and Land and Queensland Country Life.

Mr Catalano has a colourful history with Fairfax.

He was made redundant by the company in 2008 then founded The Weekly Review, a free colour property magazine that started winning business from The Age. In 2011, he sold half of the classified advertising business to Fairfax for $35 million and became Fairfax’s Domain chief in 2013.

He left Fairfax in early 2018 amid accusations of a sexist, party-boy culture at Domain’s Melbourne office.

Later in the year, he tried to scuttle Fairfax’s merger with Nine before emerging as the favourite to take over Nine’s regional newspapers with Thorney billionaire Alex Waislitz.

Public “kept in the dark” on climate change

A new report by the Climate Council finds the Federal Government has gone to extraordinary lengths to keep the public in the dark on climate change.

“I think most Australians would be outraged if they knew the full story. The Coalition Government has slashed climate science funding, censored important information and repeatedly made false claims,” said the Climate Council’s CEO, Amanda McKenzie.

“The Federal Government censored a UNESCO report on climate change and World Heritage sites, convincing the UN agency to delete all references to Australia and the Great Barrier Reef. This is not the kind of behaviour we expect from a democratic country,” said the Climate Council’s Head of Research, Dr Martin Rice.

“The Federal Government has repeatedly tried to avoid scrutiny by releasing greenhouse gas emissions data just before Christmas or on the eve of football grand finals, when fewer people are paying attention,” he said.

The Government’s tenure has been characterised by slashing climate science funding, cutting effective climate change programs, rejecting advice from expert domestic and international bodies, misleading claims from Federal Ministers, a lack of any effective climate programs, and consistently covering up poor performance.

Deep funding cuts and job losses at the CSIRO have weakened Australia’s climate science capability. As a result, Australia is unprepared to cope with the impacts of climate change.

The government’s lack of climate change action is the defining leadership failure of the past decade. We have not tackled climate change, the consequences are with us, and we must work very quickly to prevent catastrophic consequences.

“Delaying action has not made the problem go away. It has just reduced the time we have left to cut emissions and made it more challenging to do so. The Federal Government has squandered many opportunities and this will cost us dearly,” he said.

“Heatwaves have become hotter and last longer, while droughts, intense rainfall and bushfire conditions have become more severe,” said Ms McKenzie.

“As Australians experience escalating consequences into the future, they are likely to view this period of missed opportunities and failed leadership with deep dismay,” she said.

We are the world’s biggest coal exporter but have not built a big coal-fired power station for 11 years. We have massive deposits of uranium but 100% of this energy is either exported, or sterilised by the Giant Rainbow Serpent, or blocked by the Green-anti’s.

Australia suffers recurrent droughts but has not built a major water supply dam for about 40 years, and the average age of our hydro-electric plants is 48 years.

And when the floods do come, desperate farmers watch as years of rain water rush past to irrigate

distant oceans.

Once, Australia was a world leader in exploration and drilling – it is now a world leader in legalism, red tape and environmental obstructionism.

Once, Canberra and the states encouraged oil and gas exploration with geological mapping and research - now they restrict land access and limit exports.

Once, Australia was a world leader in refining metals and petroleum - now our expensive unreliable electricity and green tape are driving these industries and their jobs overseas.

Once, Australia’s CSIRO was respected for research that supported industry and for doing useful things like controlling rabbits and prickly pear and developing better crops and pastures. Now CSIRO panders to global warming hysteria and promotes the fairy story that carbon taxes and emissions targets can change the world’s climate.

Once, young Australians excelled in maths, science and engineering.

Now, they are brain-washed in gender studies, green energy non-science and environmental activism.

Once, the opening of a railway or the discovery of oil, coal, nickel or uranium made headlines.

Today’s Aussies harass explorers and developers, and queue at the release of the latest iPad. As Australia’s first people discovered, if today’s Australians lack the will or the knowledge to use our great natural resources, more energetic people will take them off us.

by Medicare, every two years under Labor’s Pensioner Dental Plan.

A Labor Government will invest $2.4 billion in a Pensioner Dental Plan, giving up to three million older Australians access to free dental care.

Labor Candidate for Calare, Dr Jess Jennings welcomed the policy, saying: “Only Labor will ensure that older Australians in Calare get the dental care they need and deserve, faster.”

“We know that over 185,000 older Australians a year skip getting the dental care they need because of cost. Despite this deficit in dental care, the Liberals have cut $283

million a year from public dental funding – that is the equivalent of over 465,000 fewer dental visits every year.

Catherine King said: “Medicare will cover a wide range of dental services such as examinations, x-rays, cleaning, fluoride treatment, fissure sealants, fillings, root canals, extractions, periodontal treatment and dentures.”

Happy families from all over the region once came together in Summer Street in Orange to clap and cheer the long line of floats of all shapes, sizes and colours taking part in the once annual Cherry Blossom Festival. The best float of all? The one proudly carrying the Cherry Blossom Queen, her Princesses, Flower Girls and Page Boys.

It was a grand event and one local communities looked forward to. Why? People back then came together more and enthusiastically embraced all things community - together with people from neighbouring towns and villages. ‘ All things community’ were very special times.

"Admirable, but what will you do to provide a nice house for my daughter to live in?"

"I will study," the young man replied, "and God will provide for us."

"And how will you buy her a beautiful engagement ring, such as she deserves?" asked the father.

"I will concentrate on my studies," the young man replied, "God will provide for us."

"And children?" asked the father. "How will you support children?"

"Don't worry, sir, God will provide," replied the fiancé.

The conversation proceeded like this... and each time the father questioned, the young idealist insisted that God would provide.

Later, the mother asked, "How did your talk go, honey?"

The father answered, "Another Greens voter; he has no job, he has no plans, and he thinks I'm God."

The ‘Take Care Program’, soon to be renamed ‘Stay Kind’ has been established by the parents of two young men Thomas and Stuart Kelly who tragically lost their lives.

Thomas in 2012 in Sydney’s King Cross area after a fateful ‘coward punch’ by someone he did not know. Someone who was obviously angry with the world when the decent young man was walking with his girlfriend to a friend’s party. He was a good kid.

His younger brother Stuart took his life in 2016 after he commenced Uni earlier that year. Life was as tough for Stuart as for his parents Kathy and Stuart Kelly who commented in the Sydney Morning Herald’s ‘Good Weekend’ story last Saturday (The SMH, Good Weekend, April 27, 2019 by Jane Cadzow) - that since his death, they have been told that Stuart and other first year Uni students were subjected to what is apparently called ‘hazing’ - an apparent ritual’ i.e. being held down while alcoholic drinks are poured down the victims throats. Apprently Stuart also suffered with comments made about the lock-out laws and the Take Care Program initiative established by his parents, he and his sister in memory of Thomas. “He (Stuart) said he would never tell them (his parents)” what had happened that caused him to go from a fun loving, outgoing young

man to a breakdown.

Hurting beyond any kind of grief Kathy and Stuart Kelly now take their turn patrolling the streets of Kings Cross as volunteers of the Take Care Program/’Stay Kind program in an attempt to help young people who are out and about in the city they are not aware of. Some, unlike their son Thomas, who are drunk, lost, taken drugs. Or like their son Thomas, simply finding their way to an invited premise.

This is a sad story - but unfortunately happens. Loss of a child would have to be the hardest to endure in this life. The loss of two children to what was effectively ‘bullying’ at its worst makes us sit up and think about our own kids (of any age), our grandchildren, neighbours, community kids ... and of each other ... and how vulnerable we all are to the anger held by others.

People like Kathy and Stuart Kelly and their daughter. and the volunteers who have joined with their cause, are doing something about their loss. In Jane Cadzow’s article Kathy simply says - “Kindness!

It’s exactly what this country and the world needs”. I would love that to be our boys’ legacy”.

Last week’s Express ‘Do You Remember?’ story of the sudden arrival of baby Clyde Draper at the Molong Health Services prompted a lot of fun memories for many Molong mums.

The question (accompanying the above photo) ... “who was the last baby born in the formerly known Molong & District Hospital Maternity Ward (which closed some 38/39 years ago - we think)?”

It was Sharni Duncan (nee Ball)

born to Merilyn and Steve Ball. The gorgeous Sharni was the last baby born (and last girl baby born) in the wonderful old ward described by many local mums as “just like being at home”.

Checking on the last boy baby born in the unit - it was the delightful Karl Gosper born to Marion and Bruce Gosper.

The spirit of Anzac at Toogong

I couple of weeks ago I was advised by a friend of mine to take the opportunity to go and witness the Anzac Day dawn service at Toogong.

If anyone in this region would like to experience the most Australian humbleness and feeling of being Australian in a bush setting, this is it.

To see the sun starting to rise out in the east and the chirping of the bird's as they awaken from sleep, in front of a tiny little church out in the bush, was to me, an example of going back in time, as this is exactly the way thing's would have been right from the end of the first world war.

To see the younger generation with their young children was truly inspiring. The framed photos placed around the Cenotaph of past family members, who in the prime of their lives, went off to war, from which a great number did not return. The 2 pipe flag poles attached to the netting fence with tie wire was just so original.

The raising of both the New Zealand and Australian Flag together also showed the respect both our countries have for each other. Toogong is such a little place but is still able to attract a great gathering of people to a very humble and gratifying Anzac Service.

I know the bigger town's have their marches and everything is done on a much larger scale, but this to me, was like going back in time in the Australian outback. There are small places like this all over our country, a lot of them with a lot less people than we witnessed at Toogong on Anzac day, but we are all there for the same reason, to pay our respect's to the men and women who have fought and died for this country.

We Will Remember Them.

Molong Probus Club After our April meeting 20 members headed off for our Observation Car trial, which concluded at Yeoval at the Banjo Paterson Museum where we all enjoyed a lunch of Walgett Rissoles or Chicken followed by Apple Crumble or Sticky Date pudding.

Tim Brazier and his horse led the Molong ANZAC Day March to the Village Green.

Horses from Australia served their country well overseas during wartime efforts. In the First World War (alone) 136,000 “walers” (the general name applied to Australian horses abroad) were sent overseas for use by the Australian Imperial Force and the British and Indian governments.

One horse from the 136,000 made it back to Australia.

‘Sandy’ belonged to Major General Sir William Bridges, who was killed at Gallipoli. He was one of 6,100 horses who had embarked for Gallipoli. However, very few of the animals were put ashore, as Lieutenant General Sir William Birdwood decided there was not room or requirement on Anzac Cove.

On 5 May, Birdwood sought approval to send the horses back to Alexandria. From 1 August 1915 ‘Sandy’ was in the care of Captain Leslie Whitfield, an Australian Army Veterinary Corps officer in Egypt. ‘Sandy remained in Egypt until he and Whitfield were transferred to France during March 1916.

In October 1917 Senator George Pearce, Minister for Defence, called for ‘Sandy’ to be

returned to Australia for pasture at Duntroon.

In May 1918 the horse was sent from the Australian Veterinary Hospital at Calais to the Remount Depot at Swaythling in England. He was accompanied by Private Archibald Jordon, who had been at the hospital since April 1917 and classed as permanently unfit for further active service.

After three months of veterinary observation, ‘Sandy’ was declared free of disease. In September 1918 he was boarded on the freighter Booral, sailing from Liverpool and arriving in Melbourne in November. ‘Sandy’ was turned out to graze at the Central Remount Depot at Maribyrnong.

‘Sandy’ saw out the rest of his days at the Remount Depot. Although he was originally intended to go to Duntroon, his increasing blindness and debility prompted the decision to have him put down, “as a humane action”, in May 1923.

His head and neck were mounted and became part of the Memorial’s collection. ‘Sandy’ was displayed for many years, although is currently not on exhibition owing to deterioration through age.

Polly has fond memories of Molong where she was raised, went to school, worked (Les Hume Dentist), married (Pat Buckley former railway station employeee) and raised their children.

Spoiled for choice, in this election? I don’t think so.

I’m not going to name my party of preference here, it wouldn’t be right to do so, but anyone who reads my page 10 waffles would have gathered by now that I’m to the left of the political spectrum.

But that’s irrelevant really. If you’re sick, it doesn’t matter which doctor prescribes the treatment that will make you well, and a good policy is a good policy, no matter who puts it forward.

And there’s no denying this country is in need of a good doctor.

Drought has our rural sector tightening its collective belt, a belt that may need to come up another notch or two yet if present indications from BOM are anything to go by.

The economy would appear to be stagnating, with economists telling us that the Reserve Bank may have to lower interest rates yet again.

Underemployment is at an almost all-time high, wages are flat and homelessness is on the rise.

If all that’s not gloomy enough, figures released last Monday (29th April) by the not-for-profit welfare organisation Anglicare and published in The Guardian, claim that of all the rental properties surveyed Australia-wide, only two were affordable by anyone receiving only the Newstart.

More findings are published in the box at right and they would seem to rule out claims that if negative gearing were to be abolished, rental housing would suddenly become beyond the reach of many – it seems that for many it already is This election campaign may have begun the day Dutton and his coconspirators plotted to roll Turnbull, only to be outfoxed by Morrison, but the particular disease gripping this country began festering in the body politic long before then – back to the days of John Howard in my opinion.

Looking back, the infamous dismissal of Gough Whitlam’s Labor government by the Governor General, acting at the behest of the Fraser Opposition, begins to pale against the seemingly endless abuses of power and position to which we are exposed on an almost daily basis.

The abuse of travel entitlements, the revolving door that opens onto lucrative appointments and/ or “consultancies” the moment a politician leaves parliamentary office, the bending of rules that allows politicians or their families to profit from their position, these are all now commonplace.

When questioned, the stock answer seems to be that it was “all within the rules” – unless of course it’s the other party.

Then there was the unedifying spectacle of a sitting government closing Parliament so that it didn’t have to face questions and votes in

the House.

We’ve seen the signing off on huge projects the day before an election is called, and announcements governments know are controversial released last thing on Fridays, knowing full well they will be buried in the weekend newspapers.

But the malaise goes deeper than that. When Australia’s home-grown version of extreme right-wing politics first reared its vile head, the government under Howard could have taken the axe to it there and then.

But it chose not to. Granted, Howard’s government pursued its representative until she was more or less neutralised but, sensing the support for her policies in some areas, it exploited them for its own use.

Australian Chinese came in for particularly harsh criticism, criticism reminiscent of the worst days of the early 20th century.

White slavery, opium dens and the Celestial Octopus weren’t mentioned in the hallowed halls of the People’s House, but the implications were there.

Your grandkids can’t get a job?

Wages too low? Prices too high?

Sydney/Perth/Oodnagalarbie East too crowded? Too much traffic?

Blame the Chinese/Vietnamese/ Boat People.

That all ceased when the members of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce called a boycott on support of the Liberal Party, causing a rapid backflip on the part of Howard himself.

He attended a constant round of meetings and social occasions where he was often reminded by Australian born Chinese (or ABCs as they called themselves then, perhaps still do) that many of their families had been in Australia for as many generations as a lot of the critics. But the damage was done.

When refugees began fleeing the Middle East and Central Asia to seek sanctuary in this country, politicians of all stripes had a ready made campaign platform.

There was no need to formulate policy on anything because once more we had a readymade scapegoat on whose back we could lay the blame for all the country’s ills.

It was an overnight trip back to the 1950s and the days of the mass emigration to Australia of Mediterranean peoples.

Back then, people – egged on by opportunistic politicians and some newspaper editors – railed against the weird customs of people from non-English speaking countries, particularly Italy and Greece.

People tut-tutted when they saw older women dressed entirely in black and wearing headscarves; on Sundays the young men would dress in suits and promenade in town; they all used olive oil as a food, not a medicine – and horror

of horrors, ate squid We conveniently forgot the Greek and Italian villagers shot by the Germans when they were caught hiding or aiding Allied soldiers.

Only this time round, it became even more virulent and hateful, thanks in no small part to newspaper proprietors who, having failed to visualise the affect that the digital world would have on their empires, scrambled to plumb the darker side of human nature in order to boost flagging circulation.

The Age of the New Tabloid was well and truly upon us, though now the page 3 cutie had been replaced by the latest Muslim/African/Dole Bludger/Single Mother/Pregnant Teen/Union Thug scandal.

To add fuel to this particular fire, misguided government legislation allowed the concentration of media ownership into fewer and fewer hands until today, one company owns most of the capital city daily papers.

This has led to blatant partisanship and vitriolic, often unfounded attacks on political parties and politicians other than those favoured by a particuar organisation.

And politicians exploit this partisanship ruthlessly, with the result that many politicians supported by the press – and by extension those who read no further than its headlines – apparently consider themselves immune from the rules that govern those who elect them and, presumably, the opposition parties Add to this toxic mix the increasing wealth of the Evangelical/ Pentecostal Christian movement with its multiplicity of cults and sects that allow it a voice out of all proportion to its membership; is it any wonder people are confused and disillusioned?

And the upshot of all this? These same politicians bemoan the fact that people are “turning away from the major parties”. And they are.

Unfortunately it’s more often than not a case of out of the frying pan into the fire.

Donald Trump is one of those fires, the end result of the fervour surrounding the rise of the Tea Party in the USA. What many people don’t realise is that these so-called “people’s movements” are covertly funded by the very organisations that are pulling the rug from under ordinary working people.

The right wing of politics in the US – and here – use China as a whipping post for all that is wrong.

Yet in the US, as in Australia, people demand more and cheaper goods which global and home-grown corporations are only too happy to sell them as long as there is a constant supply of cheap labour and raw materials.

Then when companies relocate offshore we blame the Chinese, not the companies or the government policies that enable them.

The Chinese are not to blame for the fact that Cubbie station takes vast amounts of scarce water for its cotton. The sale contract said that it was supposed to revert to a majority

Australian shareholding after I think three years. The government has never enforced it.

Nor is it the fault of China that it now owns he strategically important port of Darwin.

Governm e n t legislation is increasingly formulated by corporations at the expense of the country and its people.

T a x breaks, royalty deferrals, environmental bypasses and legitim-ised tax evasion are now part and parcel of doing business.

Competition – supposedly the bulwark of the free market economy – is stifled, and so we see wages stagnate, if not fall, and real choice increasingly restricted.

The US giant Walmart – a chain that sells literally everything fro baked beans to health insurance – is a prime example of this.

When I first arrived in the USA, if your credit card showed over a certain number of Walmart transactions, your credit limit could be lowered, the assumption being that you couldn’t afford to shop at more “upmarket stores”.

I’d been there two years when this rule was lifted by credit providers.

Purchasing power had been reduced so much among the so-called working and middle classes that people had very few alternatives other than Walmart.

Family owned businesses disappeared and even stores like Sears – the venerable Sears Roebuck – disappeared under the onslaught.

So where is all this heading?

Well, I was sorting out my preferences for the impending election, a pursuit in which I usually take great delight, and it struck me that my choices were restricted indeed.

Oh I’ll vote for my party of choice of course, but not because I’m particularly inspired by many of its policies. Rather it’s a case of “better than a poke in the eye with a burnt stick”.

In my view we’ve got one sort of left wing candidate, one slightly centre of right, one representing a party whose constituents are disillusioned, and three who think pushing a barrow is governing.

We are facing our biggest threat in human history and politicians argue about the price of electric cars, and pretend to drive tractors, and tell us we’re all going to hell if we allow people to be themselves.

What choice do we have? Grandpa Frank was right – the country’s stuffed for the want of an Irish King..

Overall, the Anglicare survey revealed that for those on the minimum wage of $719.20 a week, fewer than 3 per cent of listings were affordable; Only two were affordable by anyone receiving only Newstart.

If you are on the disability support pension of $421.80 a week, you had 317 affordable rentals to choose from; Single parents on Newstart with one child, could afford to live in only 75 of the rental listings; and For an age pensioner, 552 listings were affordable.

We’re faced with a crisis and yet we can’t hear the policies above the shouting.

Politicians have always been adept at bending facts and statistics – that’s why they employ spin doctors – but now we’re faced with high-ranking elected representatives who think nothing of lying to our faces.

And what is perhaps worse, there is now a public perception that politicians now operate under laws different from those by which the rest of us must live.

If the privatised, computerised system that now manages our welfare and pensions payments believes someone has rorted the system and received a few hundred dollars or less in overpayments, the full force of the system is brought to bear with very little chance of appeal If. a politician is caught out receiving “gifts” or making false or misleading claims on allowances, the money is repaid an “apology” is made and nothing more is said.

Perhaps this election may change things – perhaps – but I’m not going to hold my breath.

We the people should demand a higher standard, we are their employers after all.

There was only a few pens of restocker lambs penned. Mutton numbers eased and quality was mixed.

Numbers increased with agents yarding 2476. Cows made up 25% of the yarding and quality was better, there was several good runs of feeder steers and heifers, whilst weaner and cattle back to the paddock were back.

Weaners to the restocker sold 20c dearer, heavy butcher vealers lifted to be 20 to 30c. Feeder steers and feeder heifers were 6c stronger. Medium cows were cheaper whilst heavy cows were firm.

MOLONG GOLF Due to the Easter break and Anzac Day there was no golf played last Wednesday but next Wednesday 8 May we will be travelling to Cumnock for the combined Ladies Day. On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 14th, 15th and 16th May the Western District Tournament is being held in Dubbo. **************** What a shame not many people bother to use Royal Molong enjoy some good company while playing golf - anyway that's the way it goes.

We only had 4 play the monthly MUG event last Sunday. Scott Oates and Justin Oates being A-grader would be hard to catch for B-graders.

But the Ghost Walker and Bro. played pretty well - particularly the Ghost Walker coming in with 88 strokes coming out the clear winner and finishing up with a net 64. Could have knocked him over with a feather when I told him how well he had played. Could lose some strokes off his handicap!

18 hole stableford this Sunday - please come on out and enjoy the exercise and company.

Just like to remind 4 wheel drive owners and off-road motor cyclists that the golf club members (all volunteers) are not happy that you want to come out and tear up the fairways.

RUGBY LEAGUE

Molong Bulls Our Youth League boys had their first run of the season last Sunday against Cargo Blue Heelers. Unfortunately they went down 24-12 after what was a tough game. All of the boys played remarkably well!

A good effort followed by the Bullettes - unfortunately going down 50-6 to the experienced Cargo side.

First Grade was a tough and physical game with a very depleted side this week.

However, it was great to see some of the Youth League boys backing up for this hard fought game. The future really is looking bright for the Molong Bulls.
