Cabonne wins $4.6m Roads and Projects injection

Parking was at a premium in Bank Street with vehicles parked up and down both sides of the street - also at the railway sation, with caravans parked on the highway as tourists/visitors and locals shopped and stopped over for FOOD Molong. Molong business and hospitality owners are very pleased to be returning to ‘almost’ normal operating conditions. Mr Gee said “The Rec Ground is at the heart of the Molong community. It supports many community group activities and sporting clubs and is also home to the hugely popular Molong Markets. I’ll never forget the “miracle at Molong” when Kyle Travis scored in the corner to win the grand final for the Magpies in the final minute.

“Improving the lighting for this key community space will benefit the thousands of people who use it every year,” said Mr Gee. Other Cabonne projects funded include; $95,091 For Cudal Showground Power & Water Upgrades Increasing the electrical capacity at the showground from 20 to 100 amps will allow for multiple outlets to be used at once, safely.

Installing a new water system will improve the access points and storage while decreasing the amount of water wastage - crucial in the current drought conditions.

Mr Gee said “The Showground is used widely across the community but this power issue has really been holding it back for a long time.

It’s a crucial facility for the agricultural sector; schools; special events such as the Regional Schools Cross Country Carnivals; the Cudal Pony Club (who are Australia’s 2019 Pony Club of the Year) and of course the camp drafters!

“The improvements will mean the showground is not only safer, but the events that can be held here will be bigger and more frequent. Cobber helps to unearth Lorna’s Story

I love to see Cobber Webb walk into the Express Office. ‘Gidday’ starts the conversation ... and then comes the latest story, or piece of history he has unearthed relating to Molong’s early residents.

This week Cobber brought in the late Lorna Blackadder’s ‘portable wireless’ which he became the proud owner of when an Estate Auction was held after her passing (1970’s?).

Who remembers Lorna? Read on ... you might be able to help. Note: Cobber’s story coming soon it’s a fascinating one!

Cobber Webb said “I bought Lorna’s portable wireless at the auction when she passed away. I think Bob Patfield had something to do with it (the auction)”.

“When I left school at fourteen and a half (years) I had a few different jobs. I remember Lorna and her family well. I worked at the Blackadder home in Bank Street in the garden and doing any jobs at the house or the shop in Bank Street.”

“They were a lovely family.

I bought my first watch at the Blackadder’s shop for 7 shillings and 6 pence. I think the family moved from Condobolin to Molong.”

“Lorna was a pretty woman. I remember they had a lovely old car with blinds.” (Note: Michael and Kathryn Frew owners of the Post Office building in Bank Street, own a similar 1927 Chev 4 door sedan.

Michael is still searching for the current owner of the Blackadder’s car - to bring more of the Lorna Blackadder story together.)

I’ve been trying to piece together the story of longtime former Molong resident, Lorna Blackadder who will be remembered, particularly in her latter years, as a delightful eccentric woman.

The daughter of a well-respected local jeweller/ watchmaker/silversmith/retailers Ernest and Sarah Blackadder - Lorna remained living alone in the family home in Bank Street until her passing. There was a younger sibling, Roy. Lorna, described in her younger days as a beautiful dark haired lady, was well loved and looked after by her family who ran their business in the former Molong Bakery building (now the cafe seating area) from the 1910’s until Ernest’s sudden passing at 79 years of age on 13 November 1952.

Apparently, the Blackadders were a ‘well to do’ family and daughter Lorna was raised with furs, jewellery, fine clothing and with her parents, it is said she was part of

the local and Sydney social scene at the time. A photo, thought to be a young Lorna, in the Molong Museum collection, shows a striking young woman, “pretty as a picture” most would say.

When her parents passed away, Lorna apparently fended for herself. As part of her daily routine, in her more senior years, she would dress in the summer in pretty sundresses, adding artificial flowers to her hair, pearls and beads, and in the winter, warm coats which had been quality garments. Carrying her very heavy portable wireless (batteries back then were huge and heavy) Lorna would walk down Bank Street, often sitting outside the Molong Bakery (when operating as a bakery) with her ‘wireless’ playing very loud (some would say ‘blaring) classical music courtesy of ABC Radio.

playing in one hand and the other hand waving to the driver and staff who had become her friends.

Lorna loved being in Bank Street and the railway station where she had many friends to talk to - both providing her with relief from the isolation of living alone.

She usually carried a bag containing a thermos of tea, and food ... and would sit contentedly on street benches and at the railway ... enjoying the simple pleasures that life and her town had to offer. We all loved her. (Not necessarily the music!).

Stories of Molong residents need to be made into a story and placed in the Molong Museum.

Mrs Betros’s store (next door), and working with the late Jack Thorley at the dairy “out near Copper Hill - we milked around 14 cows by hand, and delivered the milk by horse and cart to customers in homes and businesses in Molong.”

5 minutes with Sue Wild Molong Pharmacy owner, fantastic community person ... and, good woman.

It's Dave & Jeanette's turn for Molong to help

by Rozzi Smith Tall, elegant, fantastic smile and loyal community worker is how I will describe Molong Pharmacy owner, Sue Wild. Modest and not one for speaking about herself ... I am sure the marvellous pharmacist/ business owner/ c o m m u n i t y volunteer will cringe with my description of her. However, I figure that Sue Wild is worth the praise.

Here is a little bit of her fabulous story ...

Sue is the daughter of the Haynes family - a Barraba grazing family. Born in Narrabi Sue lived on the land with her family (one sister and one brother) until she went to boarding school at Abbotsleigh in Sydney where she excelled in science and maths.

First stop after Abbotsleigh was the University of Sydney where the young woman from the NSW rural town of Barraba graduated with a Bachelor of Pharmacy degree.

The Journey to Molong: "I decided to spend an intern year at a pharmacy in Coonabarabran.

I went for one year and ended up staying for 5 (years)" said Sue. An experience which she remembers as "it was great".

Then came an opportunity for Sue to work in a pharmacy at Jabiru (Northern Territory) a mining town completely surrounded by the Kakadu National. An ideal location for a woman who appreciates the natural environment and landscapes that Australia has to offer. "I enjoyed the camping, bush walking and lifestyle of Jabiru and Kakadu".

Back to NSW and Tamworth where Sue worked for 18 months before heading off overseas where she worked in the UK in the Hastings/Hereford areas. "I worked for a pharmacy that was owned by an Aussie. An ideal working arrangement was formed which allowed Sue to work for one month and travel for 2 (months).

Returning to Australia to help her parents move after they had sold the family property - "Mum was a member of the Haynes family of Cumnock. Dad had worked as a Jackeroo on Alf Carroll's Molong property. They were keen to move back to the Central West area."

Working at McCarthy's Pharmacy in Orange ... Sue noticed that Colin Powell had put his pharmacy in Molong up for sale. "I guess I had never thought of owning my own pharmacy - but then again, I hadn't dismissed the idea either."

Sue purchased the Molong Pharmacy from the Powell's on 27 September 1997 where, like Colin had done many decades before - Sue and Cameron remodelled the premises ... and also like

Colin Powell became involved in community volunteering. "We live by the belief that community volunteering is important ... we have a business here, and live here ... it's important for us to 'put back in'.

Molong? "We've lived here for 23 years now. Molong and district is a great community - they are terrific people. We all make our way through, together, the ups and downs of rural living - drought, floods (2005) ... we've been tested and challenged many times. But, the community comes together and we figure out how to move through the times - together.

A long-time member of the MAG (Molong Advancement Group) Sue has held the Treasurer's position for ... well, a very long time. Sue is the 'last member standing' of a Molong committee, Molong and District Health Watch, formed in 1999 to build the medical centre on the corner of Bank and Gidley Streets (now Dr. Kapu's surery) ... "I made the last payment on the building last week" said a proud Sue. Even with her business professional life - Sue and Cameron find the time to help at the Molong Markets, MAG work parties and gardening. "We planted 350 trees at home during the Autumn".

Free time? "What free time?" laughs Sue who works 5 and a half days a week - and still manages a smile. Well, free time? A busy Molong Pharmacy to manage, stock to buy, daily operations to manage and 9 staff members (all obviously well trained by Sue) - add community volunteering "what meeting tonight?", and a gorgeous property with natural habitat to look after. That's a busy life.

Last minute question? What makes a successful business and business owner? I think it's about energy, passion, and the ability to ride the times - both good and not so good.

Retailing is about catering for all tastes with what is purchased for customers to buy. "I learnt at a trade fair to buy what my customers like ... there's no point buying based on what I like".

Dave and Jeanette Fleming of Molong are a much loved couple who have spent their lives helping other residents in need. Hardworking, family and community focussed - Dave and Jeanette understand the darkest hours of need through their own experience of losing loved family members.

With Dave's recent medical diagnosis, it's their turn to be helped. The first fundraiser will be held at the Bank Street Kiosk on Saturday morning 4 July 2020. Donations of raffle prizes welcome.

If you know Molong, you will know Dave and Jeanette Fleming. They have put a lot of time and effort into the community over the years from the football club, to the snooker club and organising many fundraisers for the people of this town, and being great mates to all that know them.

Always happy to lend a hand and help anyone out - they are very hands on grandparents to not only their children's kids but to many others as well.

Now they are having a bitof a hard time ... it will be wonderful to see our community step-up and try to help them out.

Dave's journey started in January 2019 when he suffered a heart attack. As everyone who knows Dave as a hard worker and helper of others could see that not even a heart attack could slow down this legend.

However, in January 2020, Dave noticed his

voice started to sound husky which he sought help for. Unfortunately his voice and throat worsened. Gaining further medical help he was given life changing news that he had Laryngeal Cancer. His condition will require surgery at St. Vincent's hospital in Sydney where he will most likely have to stay for 3 weeks or more to have the surgery followed by working with a speech pathologist who will help him learn to communicate, swallow and breathe independently.

Jeanette will be by his side for both the surgery and to support him in his recovery. Dave is a determined and courageous person who has embraced the challenge ahead of him and won't let this beat him. So we would like to help take a bit of the financial pressure off them both by helping to pay for travel, accommodation, day to day expenses and meals for Jeanette whilst in Sydney. We hope you can help.

growMolong group active on the water tank

Les Dean, Chair of the growMOLONG group reports: “The community group has grown in recognition and after only a short 18 months is kicking some substantial goals.

The top of the list is successfully applying for a grant of $60,000 to start the process of putting Molong on the tourist map.

Stage 1 is painting the Railway Water Tank on the Southern entrance to Molong. Community groups do not just acquire this kind of funding without a great deal of planning, collaboration and creditability in the community, a testimony to our very hard working members.

We are grateful to local news outlets for publishing our official news releases but we have an update for you now, right here. We are blessed to have a membership with a wide range of experience and knowledge in the field. At an extraordinary meeting last Sunday the design of the artwork was finalised. During extensive consultation with the community,

I have personally discussed this issue with probably 1000 local people and yes you guessed it, I got as many different possibilities.

Other members have also had this experience and did a wonderful job representing the communities views. The painting will be undertaken by professional and experienced artists. The final design will start to tell The Molong Story with our local environment and historical components “growMOLONG” will hold it’s next meeting on the 14th July 6.30pm at Molong RSL. Come along and get involved.

The Dirt Doctor’s Diary

An Express feature for our farming/grazing readers and home-gardeners Welcome back to The Dirt Doctor’s Diary! Over the last couple of editions we have been discussing the two most abundant nutrients – calcium and magnesium – and this week we will discuss the third most abundant nutrient on the soil colloid, which is potassium.

You may recall in the first instalment of the Diary we discussed the clay mineral types – kaolinite, muscovite, vermiculite and montmorillonite. Potassium plays a huge role in determining the type of clay mineral we are dealing with, for example, kaolinitic clays have two sheets of clay lattice minerals unseparated by nutrient ions. On the other hand, the vermiculites have two sheets of clay lattice minerals separated by adsorbed potassium ions, significantly changing the characteristics of the clay itself.

This makes potassium one of the trickiest nutrients to manage, as it can move in and out of these inter-lattice positions depending on the concentration of potassium ions in the soil solution. This effect is most obvious in soils with a high cation exchange capacity as they are more likely to have the clay lattice structure containing large amounts of potassium, and potassium in the soil solution can move quite readily between the soil solution and the clay lattice.

Potassium plays many important roles in plant nutrition, most importantly it is essential for photosynthesis to proceed and regulating the respiration rate in the plant.

Should potassium become deficient, photosynthesis declines and respiration increases exposing the plant to lower carbohydrate supply and moisture stress.

Potassium is also required for stem thickness and strength, the quality and size of the fruit and the ability of the plant to hold the fruit until it is ripe. Qualities such as seed weight, seeds per head, oil and protein content, wheat baking quality and cotton fibre strength and length are all fruiting qualities that are determined by availability of potassium.

There are many sources of potassium, starting with fire ash. Potassium is commonly referred to as potash, as the original source was from the fire pots used to keep people warm during times gone by.

Muriate of Potash (MoP), or potassium chloride is the vast majority of potassium fertiliser sold in Australia.

MoP is very hard on the soil microbial population because of the residual chlorine in the soil – it only takes two parts per million of chlorine to completely kill all bacteria. As little as 50 kg/ha of MoP will have a serious impact on the soil microbial population, so I strongly advise farmers and gardeners never to use MoP! When one thinks about it – we use chlorine in our swimming pools to disinfect

POTASSIUM – One of the trickiest nutrients to manage.

A healthy broccoli plant showing strong stems and veins, large leaves and a healthy fruit. them – while we do not want bacteria in our swimming pools, we do want them in our productive soils!

The best form of potassium to use is Sulphate of Potash (SoP) or potassium sulphate. If your soil is high in sulphur, potassium nitrate can be used pre planting as a solid or early in the crop growth cycle as a foliar application. It is important to get potassium on early in the growth cycle to ensure young plants grow quickly with good root development, strong stalks, strong veins and large leaves which will ultimately set the plant up to produce quality seeds and/or fruit.

The amount of potassium needed in the soil can be calculated in a similar fashion to calcium and magnesium, with the amount in the soil required varying according to the testing method and the cation exchange capacity of the soil. As we have discussed with calcium and magnesium, there are two testing methods for potassium in the soil – the Sufficiency Level of Available Nutrients (SLAN), which will measure the plant available potassium ions (K+), and the Base Cation Saturation Ratio (BCSR) which measures the percentage of K+ ions attached to the soil colloid.

Research into to the SLAN method has indicated that there should be between 125 kg/ha and 1,200 kg/ha (depending on the soil testing procedure and the cation exchange capacity of the soil) of soluble potassium in the soil to ensure there is sufficient plant available potassium to take up.

A useful rule of thumb for determining sufficient potassium levels is the formula: K required = (10 x CEC) + 180 kg/ha

In most Central West soils the cation exchange capacity varies from five to 35, so using the above formula the appropriate potassium levels should be in the range of 230 kg/ha to 530 kg/ha. This is generally the case and potassium is not usually limiting plant growth in this region.

Using the same example as last time of a soil near Cumnock with a cation exchange capacity of 10 with a tested potassium level of 600 kg/ha we find the SLAN level is above 530 kg/ha. Potassium is well supplied in this soil.

As we have previously discussed with calcium and magnesium, it is the BCSR method that is really important for determining the correct amount of potassium that is needed in the soil. In the first edition of the Diary, we discussed that 3% of the negative charges on the soil colloid should have potassium ions attached to them. 3% is the sweet spot with the range from 3% to 5%.

Different elements have different atomic weights, just like a given volume (ie a bushel or a hectolitre) of wheat will weigh differently than the same volume of oats (eg a hectolitre of wheat weighs 77 kg and a hectolitre of oats weighs 41 kg).

The “volume” equivalent we use to convert atomic weights to kilograms per hectare of the nutrient is the cation exchange capacity, and for potassium that figure is 780 kg/ha for each unit of cation exchange capacity of the soil we are testing.

Let’s now look at the BCSR method and that soil should have a potassium level calculated as follows: 10 (cation exchange capacity) X 780 kg/ha = 7,800 kg/ha of K We only need 5% of that amount attached to the soil colloid to bring it up to the maximum: 7,800 X 5% = 390 kg/ha of potassium required To check the actual percentage of exchangeable potassium in this example we do the reverse calculation: Actual % K = kg/ha of K from soil test = 600 7,800 7,800 Actual % K = 7.69% potassium saturation 7.69% (or 600 kg/ha) potassium is well above the maximum desirable level of 5% (390 kg/ha), so we can come to the conclusion that potassium will not be limiting soil health or plant growth in this paddock.

The most important message about potassium is that if you do need to apply potassium, do not use potassium chloride, marketed as Muriate of Potash or MoP!

Cabonne Council has placed three draft Molong Recreational Ground Master Plans on 28 day exhibition seeking further public feedback. (See ad page 15) Council has collaborated with the Molong Advancement Group in the development of the master plans for the the Molong Showground – Golf Club Precinct, Hunter Caldwell Precinct and the Doctor Ross Memorial Precinct (known as the Molong Rec).

Council and the Molong Advancement Group will now seek feedback and submissions from the wider community with regard to the draft master plans and proposes to place them on public exhibition in line with Council’s Community Participation Plan. (See further plans on pages 9 &10)
