Molong sweeps NSW volunteering awards

A new case in Canowindra last weekend has ended Cabonne's run of zero Covid-19 cases.

However, Western NSW Local Health District chief executive Scott McLachlan said the case was low risk.

"We're still investigating the origins of this case and some of the details around it. We know the person has been infectious in the community - they're now in isolation and being cared for in Canowindra," Mr McLachlan said on Monday.

The locations the person visited whilst infectious have been notified but is not expected to lead to a stay-at-home order for Cabonne.

However, health authorities are still working to identify where the person contracted the virus.

Cabonne Mayor and Deputy Mayor Re-Elected

Cabonne Council’s Mayor Kevin Beatty and Deputy Mayor Jamie Jones were re-elected unopposed on Tuesday, to see out the remainder of this term of Council.

Cr Beatty and Cr Jones were the only nominations for their respective titles in today’s ballot.

This re-election continues an unchanged leadership team for the Council, with Cr Beatty sitting in the Mayoral seat since 2017, and Cr Jones entering his third term as Deputy Mayor.

Cr Beatty congratulated Cr Jones on his reelection and thanked him for his work in the previous term. He also acknowledged the support of his fellow councillors. “It is an honour and a privilege to lead such a fine group of people,” he said.

Cr Jones thanked his fellow councillors for their support and offered his congratulations to Mayor Beatty. “Thank you for your ongoing leadership of this council,” he said.

Cr Anthony Durkin was also acknowledged for his time as Deputy Mayor from 2017-2019.

The current council will be in place until the end of this term. Local Government Elections will take place on Saturday, 4 December 2021.

Molong Goes Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness

Breast Cancer requires continual research to introduce new treatments to the medical profession who rely on the findings of scientists to provide them with the best possible recommendations/ outcomes to hopefully, put an end to the suffering of women, men, families who are affected.

Hope, prayers, belief, committment play an important role in personal approaches for breast cancer patients. As in any kind of cancers or other illnesses.

But research by top scientists is critical to help each individual to fight what may become the ‘fight of one’s life’.

On Saturday 2 October the Molong Advancement Group (MAG) members will be holding a Street Stall at the Bank Street

Driving their classic cars to Molong for lunch on Sunday this happy group included Sheila & Roy, Dave & Dawn, Stewart & Kerry, Shirley & Mick.

It was wonderful to see their return after lockdown - and a number of Orange and district residents come to town.

Kiosk to raise funds for two important organisations - Breast Cancer Network Australia and the NSW Cancer Council. Both organisations assist scientists and laboratories to help ‘find the answers’ to relieve the suffering of Breast Cancer - and in turn, to benefit the research of other cancers.

Last weekend saw visitors and visiting regulars return to their favourite spots in Molong. (Above) This happy group of car enthusiasts and ‘bikers’ found us again after the latest COVID lockdown. They enjoyed lunch on Sunday with Dave Stojanov and the team at the Freemasons - they then stopped over at the Express to say ‘hello’.

Molong is going Pink in October Molong Advancement Group and Molong businesses are

combining forces to raise awareness of breast cancer during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer affecting Australian women with an estimated 20000 people diagnosed with breast cancer in 2021, an average of 55 people each day.

Early detection is critical in boosting a person’s chances of surviving breast cancer.

MAG will be using the month to raise funds for Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) and the NSW Cancer Council that are directly involved in supporting people with breast cancer.

BCNA is a not for profit organisation that aims to ensure that Australians affected by breast cancer receive support, information and treatment appropriate for their needs. Much of this support is available online via the BCNA: https://www.bcna. org.au.

The NSW Cancer Council provides support for people with cancer and undertakes research into all types of cancer including breast cancer. It spends approximately $20 million per annum on research into cancer prevention and cures. Ian “Smiley” Bailiff passes

The Molong Express was saddened to hear that Ian “Smiley” Bailiff, President of the Old Fairbridgians Association passed away last week.

Ian arrived at Fairbridge Children’s Farm in 1955.

Molong local Jimmy “Tubby” Walker (former Fairbridge Farm resident) said that “all Fairbridgians owed a debt to Smiley. “He, along with David Hill, led the fight for redress to Fairbridgians which ultimately resulted in compensation to many children who lived at Fairbridge Farm, near Molong.”.

ADF Vax Clinics on the way

The ADF will be setting up pop-up vaccination clinics in four more locations across the Calare electorate.

Next week, ADF Vaccination Outreach Teams will be visiting Oberon, Molong, Blayney and Manildra to administer the COVID-19 vaccine.

At this stage, the clinics will run next month in Oberon from the 5th to the 6th, Molong from the 5th to 7th, Blayney from the 7th to the 9th, and Manildra from the 8th to the 9th of October.

Federal Member for Calare and Minister for Veterans’ Affairs and Defence Personnel, Andrew Gee, said the expansion of the program to more Central West locations will supercharge rates of vaccination in the region.

“From day one of the first ADF-run vaccination clinic in Western NSW, back in late August, rates of vaccination across our region have surged, with tens of thousands of people rolling up their sleeves at these clinics to get the jab,” said Minister Gee. “The impact of the ADF in the vaccine rollout across our country communities can not be underestimated, with more than 41,000 jabs delivered by members of the Australia Army, Navy, and Air Force over the past month.

“Now, even more people in our region will get the chance to walk-in to one of these clinics and get their jab, with the ADF set to march into Oberon, Molong, Blayney and Manildra next week.

“First dose figures for the Calare electorate are already towering above other regional areas

across the state. Now, with these 4 locations added to the itinerary, the sky’s the limit for local vaccination rates!

“Blayney, Cabonne and Oberon Local Government Areas (LGAs) have strong numbers of first dose vaccination, with more than 80% of eligible residents already on their way to being fully vaccinated. This proves residents are passionate about keeping themselves, their loved ones, and their community safe from the virus.

These clinics will keep the momentum going.

“Now that Oberon, Molong, Blayney, and Manildra have been added to the ADF’s tour of Western NSW, I encourage local residents who have yet to receive the jab to make the best use of a clinic when it pops-up near you.

“With the state set to open up at 70% fully vaccinated, regional travel will again be on the cards. While it’s great that life is returning to normal, our country communities need to be ready.

“That’s why I’m urging residents who have not yet attended an ADF clinic to get their jab, and shield themselves from the Delta variant – which does not discriminate.

“COVID-19 vaccines are also available at many clinics, GPs and pharmacies.

“Getting vaccinated is the quickest and surest way residents can regain their freedoms, and hit the re-start button once Stay-At-Home restrictions are eased.

“Together, let’s put the nightmare of lockdowns in the rear-view mirror!” said Mr Gee.

New data confirms mergers policy was a debacle

NSW Labor has urged the NSW Government to stop burying its head in the sand and admit the 2016 forced council mergers policy was a dismal failure.

The Your Council website was recently updated to give an insight into how every council throughout the state had performed in a number of areas in 2019/20.

One area of measurement was the operating performance ratio (OPR) – used to compare a council’s operating expenditure and operating income.

Simply if a council’s OPR negative, it is spending more money than it is generating.

Four of the 10 worst performing councils were merged councils while a further four were featured in the top 20 worst performing councils.

Shadow Minister for Local Government, Greg Warren, said the NSW Government and Minister for Local Government, Shelley Hancock, could no longer ignore the facts.

“Eight of the 20 worst performing councils in terms of operating performance ratio were subjected to the government’s bungled forced mergers policy,” Mr Warren said.

“This is not a coincidence – this is an alarming pattern.

“Minister Hancock has repeatedly ignored the pleas of residents in

Cootamundra-Gundagai Regional and Snowy Valleys to have a demerger despite the dire financial predicament both councils find themselves in due to the merger.

“Minister Hancock and her government are prioritising pride and politics over people and it needs to stop.

“Minister Hancock must: one, admit the policy was a dismal failure; and two, allow residents in Cootamundra-Gundagai and Snowy Valleys to hold a referendum on a demerger so they can decide their own future.”

Facemasks will be scrapped indoors from December and unvaccinated people have been warned they face another two months in lockdown under NSW’s latest roadmap to COVID normal.

The blueprint was unveiled by Premier Gladys Berejiklian on Monday, and details what happens when 80 per cent of people aged 16 or older are fully inoculated against the virus.

Ms Berejiklian also confirmed that any pubs, restaurants, gyms and hairdressers in lockdown could reopen for fully vaccinated people from Monday, October 11, after 70 per cent of people aged over 16 were double-dosed.

More restrictions will be eased when 80 per cent of people have had both jabs, which the Premier said was likely to happen “about a fortnight” later.

However, people who are unvaccinated will remain under the current stay-at-home restrictions until December 1.

A number of restrictions that the government had flagged would be

lifted at 70 per cent fully vaccinated will now remain in place until the state reaches the 80 per cent mark.

These include allowing fully vaccinated people from Sydney to travel through regional NSW. At 80 per cent drinking while standing up will be allowed in pubs with all premises operating the rule of one person per 4 square metres indoors and one person per 2 square metres outdoors.

Community sport will also resume.

When the state reaches 80 per cent vaccination unvaccinated people will get only one new freedom: attending places of worship.

A third and final stage of the roadmap will take effect on December 1, when it is expected the state will have reached 90 per cent double-dose vaccination.

On that date, unvaccinated people will be subject to the same rules as those who’ve been vaccinated.

The Premier said that after December 1, it would be up to businesses to decide whether they accepted unvaccinated customers.

The 2021 Census website, including the online form, and customer service channels will close on Friday 1 October marking a significant milestone in the Census data collection process for the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

Australian Statistician, Dr David Gruen said, “The website and online form have been available since 28 July but will soon close - now is your last opportunity to submit your Census form.

“Households that haven’t completed the Census need to do so this week.

Online forms can be submitted until Friday 1 October at 3:00pm AEST. If you don’t have your Census letter, you can go online and complete today.

Select the ‘Get a Census Number’ option.

“People who haven’t yet returned a completed paper form need to do so today using the reply-paid envelope provided”.

Agitated Nationals grapple with climate debate, as former minister Chester takes ‘a break’ from party room

A tough debate is expected when a highly volatile Nationals parliamentary party meets on Monday, ahead of climate change negotiations between Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Nationals leader Barnaby Joyce to endorse a target of net zero emissions by 2050.

Joyce is under dual pressure, with his party room sharply divided over the 2050 target, and former minister Darren Chester announcing, in a weekend statement which criticised Joyce without naming him, that he is taking “some time away” from the party room.

No details of the climate plan are yet on the table, but strong positioning is underway, with negotiations between Morrison and Joyce resuming once the PM, returning on Sunday night from his American trip, is back in the country.

The Nationals meet every fortnight, remotely when parliament is not sitting.

Joyce indicated on Friday he would accept the government adopting a firm target of net zero emissions by 2050 provided the regions were not worse off. He also wants some largesse for the Nationals.

At the same time he is expressing concerns and gives the impression of being dragged reluctantly towards an agreement.

Morrison was pressed again while in the US about increasing Australia’s ambition on climate policy and has signalled he proposes to do so. But he has to get the minor Coalition partner on side.

Both President Joe Biden and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson have pushed Australia hard as the November Glasgow climate conference draws near.

The government’s current position is net zero “preferably” by 2050.

Interviewed by the ABC on Sunday, Joyce provided little fresh clarity. But asked whether there should be no coal jobs lost, he said, “well, not by reason of domestic policy”.

Deputy Nationals leader and agriculture minister David Littleproud, who supports the 2050 firm target with safeguards and incentives for the regions, told Sky that

members of the Nationals party room were “pragmatic”.

They were “looking through the lens of protecting regional Australia but making sure there’s opportunity for regional Australia to also participate in this”.

But former resources minister Matt Canavan tweeted, “I am deadset against net zero emissions. Just look at the disaster the UK is living through. They’re switching off their industry to keep their lights on, and they are

struggling to feed themselves. Net zero emissions would just make us weaker.”

Resources minister Keith Pitt said: “We are yet to see the strategy, the plan, the cost, and who’s paying.

"My priority will be the 1.2 million direct and indirect jobs associated with the resources sector”.

Chester, who is a supporter of net zero, won’t be in the meeting to help advance the case. He said he had “decided to take a break from organised meetings, events and activities in The Nationals Federal Parliamentary party room.

"I will reassess my position when Federal Parliament resumes in October.

"To be clear, I continue to support the Coalition government but want some time away from the The Nationals Federal Parliamentary party room to reflect on a number of significant issues.

"My decision follows months of frustration with the repeated failure of the leadership to even attempt to

moderate some of the more disrespectful and offensive views expressed by a minority of colleagues.”

Chester, who was dropped from the frontbench when Joyce became leader, has been highly critical of Queensland National George Christensen, whose string of provocative comments have included, most recently, accusing Victorian police of using excessive force against demonstrators, and suggesting they should be arrested.

Joyce on Sunday again indicated he could not silence Christensen, who is retiring at the election, and said that anyway, there was a right of free speech.

Asked on SBS whether he thought he had the support of the majority of the Nationals to go forward on climate policy, Morrison said: “It’s not about my view. It’s about what I think Australians are clearly looking for”.

“My job is to bring my government together to focus on the plan that can achieve it.

"A plan [that] says to Australians, whether they’re up in the Hunter, or down in Bell Bay, or up in Gladstone or up in the Pilbara […] this is how we achieve net zero emissions in the future.

"Our view is that we can achieve that by keeping the costs low, keeping people in industries, ensuring we’re using transition fuels that take us from one place to the next, and we take people on the journey,” Morrison said.

The communique from the QUAD summit which Morrison attended at the end of his trip said: “We have joined forces to tackle the climate crisis, which must be addressed with the urgency it demands.

"Quad countries will work together to keep the Parisaligned temperature limits within reach and will pursue efforts to limit it to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

"To this end, Quad countries intend to update or communicate ambitious NDCs [nationally determined contributions] by COP26 and welcome those who have already done so.”

Molong celebrates at the 2021 Central West Volunteer of the Year Awards

Members from Molong Cadet Division gathered around a laptop for the virtual awards presentation by the Center for Volunteering NSW, Central West. They watched intently as their nominated members names were read out, it would not be an exaggeration to say that they were excited when the following results were announced.

Central West Junior Volunteer of the Year - Jazmin Pietrzak Central West Adult Volunteer of the Year – Jade Kirk Central West Senior Volunteer of the Year – Julie Dean A trifecta and the Cadet members could not believe it!

Then the final award was the Central West Volunteer of the Year and Julie Dean was announced as the recipient.

Unbelievable they thought, did we hear that correctly, but the zoom camera had already recorded their very surprised reaction.

Mr Andrew Gee MP and Mr Phil Donato MP congratulated Molong Cadet Division on “scooping the pool” of awards for the Central West. They acknowledged the volunteer work of the Cadets and officers in St John Ambulance Molong Cadet Division “The virtual regional ceremony for the 2021 #NSWVolunteerAwards brought us all together today to say thank you to volunteers across the Central West. Your volunteering efforts are helping to build stronger and well-connected communities.

Volunteers are the backbone and the soul of rural and regional communities.

Regional finalists for the awards are announced at 25 ceremonies throughout NSW and are invited to the Gala State Ceremony for the announcement of the 2021 NSW Volunteer of the Year.” https://www.volunteering. com.au/2021-awardscentral-west/ Senior Volunteer of the Year – Julie Dean from Molong Julie founded the St John Ambulance Molong Cadet Division in 1995.

The former teacher aimed to set up a dedicated first aid training organisation, and youth group, that could also provide first aid services to volunteer organisations such as show societies, sporting clubs, pony clubs and rodeos.

Julie has acquired credentials in 86 different courses and volunteered 6,426 hours to St John Ambulance. She is also Secretary of GrowMolong a Community group which works on projects to improve Molong.

Young Volunteer of the YearJazmin Pietrzak from Molong Jazmin, 15, joined Molong Cadet Division in 2018. The aspiring paramedic was awarded the 2020 Cadet of the Year in recognition of her outstanding work within Molong and the Cabonne local government area. She recently travelled to Parkes with a small group of Cadets and demonstrated how to do CPR to local Meals on Wheels volunteers.

Jazmin Pietrzak, Jade Kirk and Julie Dean Adult Volunteer of the Year- Jade Kirk from Molong Jade joined Molong Cadet Division in 2010 and now organises the training program for the Molong cadets. The next nearest Cadet Division is in Broken Hill, which means Jade does not have other people to bounce ideas off. Instead, she has used her computer skills to communicate with people around the State to find and develop the right training strategies and material for the Molong cadets.

In a statement the Centre for Volunteering said: Volunteers are the backbone and the soul of rural and regional communities.

This afternoon we came together to say thanks to our amazing volunteers in the Central West at the regional ceremony for the 2021 NSW Volunteer of the Year awards.

And it was a big afternoon for the St John Ambulance Molong Cadet Division,

which has grown to be one of the biggest in NSW despite the tiny size of the community.

Congratulations to the award winners Julie Dean, Jazmin Pietrzak and Jade Kirk – who volunteer for the Molong cadets. Congratulations also to the volunteer team at Bathurst’s DCaf café, which started as a pilot in 2019 and is now stronger than ever.

We can’t wait to see all the finalists again at our Gala State Ceremony at the end of the year.

The NSW Volunteer of the Year Awards have grown to become one of the country’s largest celebrations of volunteering. It creates an opportunity to hear the stories firsthand from our volunteers and most importantly to say thank you.

Parkes industrial precinct works begin

Construction of the Parkes Special Activation Precinct is now underway, Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW John Barilaro announced today.

“The Parkes Special Activation Precinct has been in the pipeline for a number of years, so it is really exciting to be able to mark the start of construction on this transformational investment.”

“The precinct will focus on sustainability and aims to become Australia’s first UNIDO Eco-Industrial Park where businesses will work together to create a true circular economy, where one corporation’s waste becomes another’s material for production,” Mr Barilaro said.

Mayor of Parkes Shire, Ken Keith OAM said the start of

works was a significant milestone for the Parkes Special Activation Precinct.

“With construction commencing, job opportunities will be created for not only Parkes but for the region.

This announcement means that we are one step closer to realising the benefits of the Parkes Special Activation Precinct, which will attract and grow businesses, drive agriculture value-adding, facilitate modern manufacturing, stimulate the local economy, and provide more local employment opportunities,” he said.

Early works include the upgrade of Brolgan Road to incorporate a roundabout for the future Coopers Road realignment, two bridges over the existing railway lines, and a new 30MVa sub-station, as well as all associated utilities. These works are expected to be completed in the first half of 2023.

Construction company Fulton Hogan will deliver the construction work, which is expected to require up to 125 construction jobs throughout the build.

Magazine With restrictions easing we were excited to be able to acknowledge the efforts of all the junior players for 2021. It was unfortunate that the season was not able to be played out, but some of the season was better than nothing. The club is so very proud of all the players running around as Molong Magpies.

The under 9’s was run by Ange Fraser, Sally Allcorn, Sally Curry, Stacey Ellice and Jo Lyons. We also had a few older kids that assisted the coaches, which was great when trying to teach the beginners. There were plenty of sausage sandwiches eaten each Saturday morning, thanks to SPAR. All of the players were given a new JDH stick bag, much to their delight.

Molong Hockey Club Junior Hockey Presentation From this age group there were Western PSSA and Polding representatives through primary school sport. For the effort and commitment these players have shown they were each presented with a JDH stick bag. Well done to all.

There were two, half field Open Primary teams, Pandas and Penguins that played in Orange on a Wednesday evening. Thanks to the coaches and managers for these teams, Jill and Dave Brodie along with Sarrah King and Cass Sullivan. The award winners for the two teams were: Most Improved – Maddy Chrystall and Sam Lapins, Coaches Award – Ilsa Allcorn and Emily Wood, Most Consistent – Lacey Olsson and Harriet King, Best and Fairest – Harry Lee and Ella Vandervelde.

MHC had two under 14 teams, Skunks and Killer Whales. Both of these teams were very young, but they stepped up and played in the older age group. Thanks goes to Matt Lyons and Sian Jacobs and Jenny Olsson and Lisa Vandervelde for coaching and managing. The award winners for both teams were: most improved – Ollie Philpot and Madelyn Jones, coaches award – Addi Walker and Caoimhe Murphy, most consistent – Abbie Lyons and Will Ryan, best and fairest – Marley Vandervelde and Lucy Haydon.

Tomatoes - The True Taste of Summer

Companion Planting: Tomatoes love growing together with Basil, Chives, Comfrey, Parsley, Beans (climbing) Broccoli, Brussel Sprouts, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Carrots, Corn, Lettuce, Marjoram

Fresh home grown tomatoes. There is nothing like these ‘tastes of summer’ as the warmer weather approaches.

Note: The ground in this area is still cold - but there are home-grown gardeners willing to give their tommies a go by planting in pots on warm verandahs - or in hot houses.

Tomatoes would have to be the fruit that reminds us of special memories of standing next to the vine - munching away at the bright red fruit - with each bite full of flavour reminding one of some of the best memories.

Mine, being of hide-n-seek with friends around the Gatekeeper’s Cottage where my favourite summer ‘hidey spot’ was my dad’s large tomato patch - and, sitting on the cool ground - eating cool, juicy tomatoes from the vine whilst I waited to be ‘found’. “Coming ready or not” was the catch phrase of the ‘seeker’. Checking on one of my favourite gardening websites ‘local flourish’ and the article titled “Growing Tomatoes in Central NSW” (e-book) I found some very good information that I am sure this great site will not be offended by in passing on to Express readers ...

The important how to’s “You get determinate and indeterminate varieties. The determinate varieties are usually hybrids that only grow to certain size. The fruit on a determinate vine all ripens at the same time. They are often easier to keep in check in a small veggie garden. Indeterminate varieties keep growing longer vines all through the season. These are often heirloom varieties and usually produce for a longer season, but can get out of hand if they aren’t pruned or trained onto supports. Their fruits are produced and ripen over the whole season, until the winter cold causes them to weaken and die. Use basil as a companion plant to improve the flavour of the tomatoes.

Most tomato varieties will need a fair amount of support to keep them upright, stop them from smothering the plants around them, and to keep their fruit from lying on the ground while it ripens. Stakes, cages and trellises are all common ways of supporting tomatoes. Its usually best to have your supports in the ground before you plant to avoid damaging the plants’ delicate root systems.

Classic Mistakes If you’re growing heirloom varieties be sure to provide support for them. They grow on long vines and can smother other veggies if they aren’t contained.

Sunlight: Grow in: Partial Sun - Full Sun During the hottest parts of the New South Wales summer, your tomatoes will appreciate some shade in the afternoons to protect them from the worst of the summer heat. You can plant them in a spot that’s shaded in the afternoon or put up shade cloth to give them some protection Soil Preparation Tomatoes are pretty heavy feeders, so dig some well-rotted manure and compost into your soil before planting. Sheep manure is an especially good option, because it contains phosphorus and potassium as well as the usual nitrogen which is found in all manures.

Tomatoes like a soil with a pH of 6.5 to 7.2, if your soil is too acidic, your tomatoes may develop blossom-end rot.

Soil pH test kits are readily available, so its worth testing your soil, especially if you’ve been adding compost to it for a few years. If the pH is too high, add some lime to your soil.

If you’re soil is a heavy clay, you’ll probably have drainage problems. Planting in pot or raised beds is the quickest way around the problem of clay soil. It’s definitely possible to amend a clay soil; it may take a few years of adding compost to get your soil to the point where its fertile and easy to work.

This is also the stage where you want to get the supports for your tomatoes in place. There are many methods and ideas for staking tomatoes; stakes, cages, and trellises are the common ones. It’s a good rule to always use more support than you think you will need, because it’s easy to forget just how big a tomato vine can grow.

Joyfully, it’s coming up to early tomato planting time this weekend - the first weekend in October. Some say wait until Melbourne Cup Day ... I will indeed for the longer lasting varieties to take my love of tommies through to early Autumn. But in the meantime I’ll be planting some varieties this weekend in a special small plot where the soil is warmer, the sun more predictable - and Jack Frost is becoming less.

Sowing Seed Sow seed: September-December Sowing depth: 5 - 7 mm Only sow tomatoes into the garden once its consistently warm.

Tomatoes can be sown directly into the veggie garden and then thinned once they’re up. They are most often sown in pots or seed trays and then the strongest seedlings are transplanted into the veggie garden. They self-seed really easily, so you might find plants springing up in areas where tomatoes were grown in previous years or even just from seeds that are in the compost.

Planting Plant seedlings: September-January Only plant tomatoes in the wider garden once it is consistently warm weather and the ground is warmer.

When you plant your seedlings, add a small amount of bonemeal to each hole. This will help your tomatoes to develop strong root systems. Lay your seedlings on their side when you plant them and then cover most of the stem, only leaving the very top where the leaves are.

Tomatoes grow new roots out of parts of their stems that are covered in soil. The better the root system, the more vigorous your plants will be.

Propagation Tomatoes can be propagated from seed or from cuttings. Its easy to grow tomatoes from cuttings in the warm New South Wales climate. Simply cut off a sucker shoot from the bottom of the plant, remove all the leaves except the top two and stick into a pot with some loose soil. Keep the soil moist so that roots can form and keep your plant in a warm, light area. While its rooting, keep it away from any harsh sun. Once the plants are rooted and growing, they can be overwintered in a warm, sunny spot indoors.

Care Keep training vines into their supports as they grow.

They can be tied on with something soft and elastic.

Old pantyhose are ideal. Pinch out the growing tips of indeterminate varieties if you want them to stop growing longer.

Watering Tomatoes are thirsty plants and need regular deep watering. Dry periods can cause the tomatoes to drop fruit and sudden over-supplies of water can lead to the fruit splitting open. The trick with tomatoes is a steady supply of water. They don’t like dry roots, but they also don’t like waterlogged soil.

Feeding Tomatoes need a fair amount of feeding and have some quite particular feeding requirements. TO simplify this process, you can feed this with an organic tomato feed.

These feeds are specifically developed for tomatoes and contain all the nutrients they need.

Alternatively, feed them regularly with a balanced (not too high in nitrogen) organic fertilizer such as a fish

emulsion or compost tea. They will also benefit from a regular Epsom salt solution feed. For an even better flavour and to improve disease resistance, apply a small handful of sulphate of potash around the base of each plant every few weeks. Be sure to water the potash in straight away.

Mulching A good mulch will help to keep the weeds out and the water in. Remember to keep top up your mulch as it breaks down into your soil. Pea straw or lucerne are both good options. You can add extra organic material to your mulch to turn it into a feeding mulch. Feeding mulches can encourage the growth of extra stem-roots which help plants to grow stronger and produce higher yields. Be careful not add too much nitrogen though, as that will lead to strong bushy plants with low yields.

A small amount of manure or blood and bone added to your usual organic mulch is ideal.

Harvesting Harvest: 8 to 17 Weeks After Planting Simply pull or cut the fruit from the vine.

For the tastiest tomatoes, harvest them once they have fully ripened on the vine. Tomatoes that are harvested before they are fully ripe, will keep ripening if they are kept at room temperature, but will never have quite as good a flavour as vine-ripened tomatoes.

Picking often and regularly from indeterminate vines can encourage them produce more fruit. So, if want a bumper harvest, don’t wait for them to be fully ripe before you pick. Rather, pick them early and let them ripen indoors. You’ll sacrifice a little on flavour, but you’ll get a bigger harvest.

If there is cold weather coming or you’re going to be away from home for a while its worth harvesting the unripe tomatoes and letting them ripen indoors. There are even some delicious recipes to use up green tomatoes before they ripen.

The Bush Undertaker "The Bush Undertaker" is one of Australian writer and poet Henry Lawson's first sketches, and is among the stories for which he first gained attention as an accommplished writer. The story concerns an eccentric old man, who lives alone with only his dog for company, and his discovery and treatment of a friend's deceased body.

“FIVE BOB!” The old man shaded his eyes and peered through the dazzling glow of that broiling Christmas Day. He stood just within the door of a slab-and-bark hut situated upon the bank of a barren creek; sheep-yards lay to the right, and a low line of bare, brown ridges formed a suitable background to the scene.

“Five Bob!” shouted he again; and a dusty sheep-dog rose wearily from the shaded side of the hut and looked inquiringly at his master, who pointed towards some sheep which were straggling from the flock.

“Fetch ’em back,” he said confidently.

The dog went off, and his master returned to the interior of the hut.

“We’ll yard ’em early,” he said to himself; “the super won’t know. We’ll yard ’em early, and have the arternoon to ourselves.”

“We’ll get dinner,” he added, glancing at some pots on the fire. “I cud do a bit of doughboy, an’ that theer boggabri’ll eat like tater-marrer along of the salt meat.”

He moved one of the black buckets from the blaze. “I likes to keep it jist on the sizzle,” he said in explanation to himself; “hard bilin’ makes it tough—I’ll keep it jist a-simmerin’.”

Here his soliloquy was interrupted by the return of the dog.

“All right, Five Bob,” said the hatter, “dinner’ll be ready dreckly. Jist keep yer eye on the sheep till I calls yer; keep ’em well rounded up, an’ we’ll yard ’em afterwards and have a holiday.”

This speech was accompanied by a gesture evidently intelligible, for the dog retired as though he understood English, and the cooking proceeded.

“I’ll take a pick an’ shovel with me an’ root up that old blackfellow,” mused the shepherd, evidently following up a recent train of thought; “I reckon it’ll do now. I’ll put in the spuds.”

The last sentence referred to the cooking, the first to a blackfellow’s grave about which he was curious.

“The sheep’s a-campin’,” said the soliloquizer, glancing through the door. “So me an’ Five Bob’ll be able to get our dinner in peace. I wish I had just enough fat to make the pan siss; I’d treat myself to a leather-jacket; but it took three weeks’ skimmin’ to get enough for them theer doughboys.”

In due time the dinner was dished up; and the old man seated himself on a block, with the lid of a gin-case across his knees for a table. Five Bob squatted opposite with the liveliest interest and appreciation depicted on his intelligent countenance.

Dinner proceeded very quietly, except when the carver paused to ask the dog how some tasty morsel went with him, and Five Bob’s tail declared that it went very well indeed.

“Here y’are, try this,” cried the old man, tossing him a large piece of doughboy. A click of Five Bob’s jaws and the dough was gone.

“Clean into his liver!” said the old man with a faint smile. He washed up the tinware in the water the duff had been boiled in, and then, with the assistance of the dog, yarded the sheep.

This accomplished, he took a pick and shovel and an old sack, and started out over the ridge, followed, of course, by his four-legged mate. After tramping some three miles he reached a spur, running out from the main ridge. At the extreme end of this, under some gum-trees, was a little mound of earth, barely defined in the grass, and indented in the centre as all blackfellows’ graves were.

He set to work to dig it up, and sure enough, in about half an hour he bottomed on payable dirt.

When he had raked up all the bones, he amused himself by putting them together on the grass and by speculating as to whether they had belonged to black or white, male or female. Failing, however, to arrive at any satisfactory conclusion, he dusted them with great care, put them in the bag, and started for home.

He took a short cut this time over the ridge and down a gully which was full of ring-barked trees and long white grass. He had nearly reached its mouth when a great greasy black goanna clambered up a sapling from under his feet and looked fightable.

“Dang the jumpt-up thing l” cried the old man. “It gin me a start!”

At the foot of the sapling he espied an object which he at first thought was the blackened carcass of a sheep, but on closer examination discovered to be the body of a man; it lay with its forehead resting on its hands, dried to a mummy by the intense heat of the western summer.

“Me luck’s in for the day and no mistake!” said the

shepherd, scratching the back of his head, while he took stock of the remains. He picked up a stick and tapped the body on the shoulder; the flesh sounded like leather.

He turned it over on its side; it fell flat on its back like a board, and the shrivelled eyes seemed to peer up at him from under the blackened wrists.

He stepped back involuntarily, but, recovering himself, leant on his stick and took in all the ghastly details.

There was nothing in the blackened features to tell aught of name or race, but the dress proclaimed the remains to be those of a European. The old man caught sight of a black bottle in the grass, close beside the corpse. This set him thinking. Presently he knelt down and examined the soles of the dead man’s blucher boots, and then, rising with an air of conviction, exclaimed: “Brummy! by gosh!—busted up at last!

“I tole yer so, Brummy,” he said impressively, addressing the corpse. “I allers told yer as how it ’ud be— an’ here y’are, you thundering jumpt-up cuss-o’-God fool.

Yer cud earn more’n any man in the colony, but yer’d lush it all away. I allers sed as how it ’ud end, an’ now yer kin see fur y’self.

“I spect yer was a-comin’ t’ me t’ get fixt up an’ set straight agin; then yer was a-goin’ to swear off, same as yer allers did; an’ here y’are, an’ now I expect I’ll have t’ fix yer up for the last time an’ make yer decent, for ’twon’t do t’ leave yer alyin’ out here like a dead sheep.”

He picked up the corked bottle and examined it. To his great surprise it was nearly full of rum.

“Well, this gits me,” exclaimed the old man; “me luck’s in, this Christmas, an’ no mistake. He must ’a’ got the

jams early in his spree, or he wouldn’t be a-making for me with near a bottleful left. Howsomenever, here goes.”

Looking round, his eyes lit up with satisfaction as he saw some bits of bark which had been left by a party of strippers who had been getting bark there for the stations.

He picked up two pieces, one about four and the other six feet long, and each about two feet wide, and brought them over to the body. He laid the longest strip by the side of the corpse, which he proceeded to lift on to it.

“Come on, Brummy,” he said, in a softer tone than usual, “ye ain’t as bad as yer might be, considerin’ as it must be three good months since yer slipped yer wind. I spect it was the rum as preserved yer. It was the death of yer when yer was alive, an’ now yer dead, it preserves yer like—like a mummy.”

Then be placed the other strip on top, with the hollow side downwards—thus sandwiching the defunct between the two pieces—removed the saddle-strap, which be wore for a belt, and buckled it round one end, while he tried to think of something with which to tie up the other.

“I can’t take any more strips off my shirt,” he said, critically examining the skirts of the old blue overshirt he wore. “I might get a strip or two more off, but it’s short enough already.

Let’s see; how long have I been a-wearin’ of that shirt; oh, I remember, I bought it jist two days afore Five Bob was pupped. I can’t afford a new shirt jist yet; howsomenever, seein’ it’s Brummy, I’ll jist borrow a couple more strips and sew ’em on agen when I git home.”

He up-ended Brummy, and placing his shoulder against the middle of the lower sheet of bark, lifted the corpse to a horizontal position; then, taking the bag of bones in his hand, he started for home.

“I ain’t a-spendin’ sech a dull Christmas arter all,” he reflected, as he plodded on; but he had not walked above a hundred yards when he saw a black goanna sidling into the grass.

“That’s another of them theer dang things!” he exclaimed. “That’s two I’ve seed this mornin’.”

Presently he remarked: “Yer don’t smell none too sweet, Brummy. It must ’a’ been jist about the middle of shearin’ when yer pegged out. I wonder who got yer last cheque. Shoo! theer’s another black goanner—theer must be a flock of ’em.”

He rested Brummy on the ground while he had another pull at the bottle, and, before going on, packed the bag of bones on his shoulder under the body, and he soon stopped again.

“The thunderin’ jumpt-up bones is all skew-whift,” he said. “’Ole on, Brummy, an’ I’ll fix ’em”—and he leaned the dead man against a tree while he settled the bones on his shoulder, and took another pull at the bottle.

About a mile further on he heard a rustling in the grass to the right, and, looking round, saw another goanna gliding off sideways, with its long snaky neck turned towards him.

This puzzled the shepherd considerably, the strangest part of it being that Five Bob wouldn’t touch the reptile, but slunk off with his tail down when ordered to “sick ’em.”

“Theer’s sothin’ comic about them theer goanners,” said the old man at last. “I’ve seed swarms of grasshoppers an’ big mobs of kangaroos, but dang me if ever I seed a flock of black goanners afore!”

A woman accompanied her husband to the doctor's office.

After his checkup, the doctor called the wife into his office alone.

He said, "Your husband is suffering from a very severe stress disorder.

If you don't do the following, your husband will surely die."

"Each morning, fix him a healthy breakfast. Be pleasant at all times.

For lunch make him a nutritious meal.

For dinner prepare an especially nice meal for him. Don't burden him with chores.

Don't discuss your problems with him, it will only make his stress worse. No nagging. And most importantly, make love with your husband several times a week.

If you can do this for the next 10 months to a year, I think your husband will regain his health completely."

On the way home, the husband asked his wife. "What did the doctor say?"

“He said you're going to die.”

This was surreal.... yesterday I was travelling behind an ambulance. Oddly, I noticed a small metal box sitting on the back bumper. When the ambulance turned the corner, the box flew off and landed on the curb. I thought it's time for me to be a good Samaritan so I pulled over and retrieved it. Curious I made the mistake of opening it….there was a human toe packed a bag on ice.

I thought someone probably really needs this, so I called the hospital and told them what I saw, they said 'yes, the ambulance had arrived minus the box!'. I gave them my location and asked if they were going to send another ambulance to collect it?

The lady replied "No, we'll just send a toe truck......."

A woman was enjoying a good game of golf with her girlfriends.

"Oh, no!" she suddenly exclaimed.

"Look at the time! I have to rush home and fix dinner for my husband. He'll be so annoyed if it's not ready on time."

When she got home, she discovered all she had in the fridge was a wilted lettuce leaf, an egg and a can of cat food.

With no time to go to the supermarket, she opened the can of cat food, stirred in the egg and garnished it with the lettuce leaf.

She greeted her husband warmly when he came home, and then watched in horror as he sat down to his dinner.

To her surprise, he seemed to be enjoying it.

"Darling, this is the best dinner you've made me in 40 years of marriage! You can make this for me any day."

Needless to say, every golf day from then on, the woman made her husband the same dish.

She told her golf partners about it and they were all horrified. "You're going to kill him!" they exclaimed.

Two months later, her husband died.

The women were sitting around the clubhouse, and one of them said, "You killed him! We told you that feeding him cat food every week would do him in! How WORD SEARCH

Melbourne airport authority found over 200 dead crows on a road near the airport, and there was concern that they may have died from Avian Flu. A Bird Pathologist examined the remains of all the crows, and, to everyone's relief, confirmed the problem was definitely NOT Avian Flu. The cause of death appeared to be vehicular impacts.

However, during the detailed analysis it was noted that varying colors of paints appeared on the bird's beaks and claws.

By analyzing these paint residues it was determined that 98% of the crows had been killed by impact with trucks , while only 2% were killed by an impact with a car.

The airport then hired an Ornithological Behaviorist to determine if there was a cause for the disproportionate percentages of truck kills versus car kills.

The Ornithological Behaviorist very quickly concluded the cause: When crows eat road kill, they always have a look-out crow in a nearby tree to warn of impending danger.

The scientific conclusion was that while all the lookout crows could shout "Car", none could shout "Truck."

The Bush Undertaker Continued from Page 10 On reaching the hut the old man dumped the corpse against the wall, wrong end up, and stood scratching his head while he endeavoured to collect his muddled thoughts; but he had not placed Brummy at the correct angle, and, consequently, that individual fell forward and struck him a violent blow on the shoulder with the iron toes of his blucher boots.

The shock sobered him. He sprang a good yard, instinctively hitching up his moleskins in preparation for flight; but a backward glance revealed to him the true cause of this supposed attack from the rear. Then he lifted the body, stood it on its feet against the chimney, and ruminated as to where he should lodge his mate for the night, not noticing that the shorter sheet of bark had slipped down on the boots and left the face exposed.

“I spect I’ll have ter put yer into the chimneytrough for the night, Brummy,” said he, turning round to confront the corpse. “Yer can’t expect me to take yer into the hut, though I did it when yer was in a worse state than—Lord!”

The shepherd was not prepared for the awful scrutiny that gleamed on him from those empty sockets; his nerves received a shock, and it was some time before he recovered himself sufficiently to speak.

“Now, look a-here, Brummy,” said he, shaking his finger severely at the delinquent, “I don’t want to pick a row with yer; I’d do as much for yer an’ more than any other man, an’ well yer knows it; but if yer starts playin’ any of yer jumpt-up pranktical jokes on me, and a-scarin’ of me after a-humpin’ of yer ’ome, by the ’oly frost I’ll kick yer to jim-rags, so I will.”

This admonition delivered, he hoisted Brummy into the chimney-trough, and with a last glance towards the sheep-yards, he retired to his bunk to have, as he said, a snooze.

He had more than a snooze, however, for when he woke, it was dark, and the bushman’s instinct told him it must be nearly nine o’clock.

He lit a slush-lamp and poured the remainder of the rum into a pannikin; but, just as he was about to lift the draught to his lips, he heard a peculiar rustling sound overhead, and put the pot down on the table with a slam that spilled some of the precious liquor.

Five Bob whimpered, and the old shepherd, though used to the weird and dismal, as one living alone in the bush must necessarily be, felt the icy breath of fear at his heart.

He reached hastily for his old shot-gun, and went out to investigate. He walked round the hut several times and examined the roof on all sides, but saw nothing. Brummy appeared to be in the same position.

At last, persuading himself that the noise was caused by possums or the wind, the old man went inside, boiled his billy, and, after composing his nerves somewhat with a light supper and a meditative smoke, retired for the night. He was aroused several times before midnight by the same mysterious sound overhead, hut, though he rose and examined the roof on each occasion by the light of the rising moon, he discovered nothing.

At last he determined to sit up and watch until daybreak, and for this purpose took up a position on a log a short distance from the hut, with his gun laid in readiness across his knee.

After watching for about an hour, he saw a black object coming over the ridge-pole. He grabbed his gun and fired. The thing disappeared. He ran round to the other side of the hut, and there was a great black goanna in violent convulsions on the ground.

Then the old man saw it all. “The thunderin’ jumpt-up thing has been a-havin’ o’ me,” he exclaimed. “The same cusso’-God wretch has a-follered me ’ome, an’ has been a-havin’ its

Christmas dinner off of Brummy, an’ a-hauntin’ o’ me into the bargain, the jumpt-up tinker!”

As there was no one by whom he could send a message to the station, and the old man dared not leave the sheep and go himself, he determined to bury the body the next afternoon, reflecting that the authorities could disinter it for inquest if they pleased.

So he brought the sheep home early and made arrangements for the burial by measuring the outer casing of Brummy and digging a hole according to those dimensions.

“That ’minds me,” he said. “I never rightly knowed Brummy’s religion, blest if ever I did.

Howsomenever, there’s one thing sartin—none o’ them theer pianer-fingered parsons is a-goin’ ter take the trouble ter travel out inter this Godforgotten part to hold sarvice over him, seein’ as how his last cheque’s blued. But, as I’ve got the fun’ral arrangements all in me own hands, I’ll do jestice to it, and see that Brummy has a good comfortable buryin’—and more’s unpossible.”

“It’s time yer turned in, Brum,” he said, lifting the body down.

He carried it to the grave and dropped it into one corner like a post. He arranged the bark so as to cover the face, and, by means of a piece of clothes-line, lowered the body to a horizontal position. Then he threw in an armful of gumleaves, and then, very reluctantly, took the shovel and dropped in a few shovelfuls of earth.

“An’ this is the last of Brummy,” he said, leaning on his spade and looking away over the tops of the ragged gums on the distant range.

This reflection seemed to engender a flood of memories, in which the old man became absorbed. He leaned heavily upon his spade and thought.

“Arter all,” he murmured sadly, “arter all—it were Brummy.

“Brummy,” he said at last. “It’s all over now; nothin’ matters now—nothin’ didn’t ever matter, nor—nor don’t. You uster say as how it ’ud be all right termorrer” (pause); “termorrer’s come, Brummy—come fur you—it ain’t come fur me yet, but—it’s a-comin’.”

He threw in some more earth.

“Yer don’t remember, Brummy, an’ mebbe yer don’t want to remember—I don’t want to remember—but—well, but, yer see that’s where yer got the pull on me.”

He shovelled in some more earth and paused again.

The dog rose, with ears erect, and looked anxiously first at his master and then into the grave.

“Theer oughter be somethin’ sed,” muttered the old man; “’tain’t right to put ’im under like a dog. Theer oughter be some sort o’ sarmin.”

He sighed heavily in the listening silence that followed this remark and proceeded with his work. He filled the grave to the brim this time, and fashioned the mound carefully with his spade. Once or twice he muttered the words, “I am the rassaraction.” As he laid the tools quietly aside, and stood at the head of the grave, he was evidently trying to remember the something that ought to be said. He removed his hat, placed it carefully on the grass, held his hands out from his sides and a little to the front, drew a long deep breath, and said with a solemnity that greatly disturbed Five Bob: “Hashes ter hashes, dus ter dus, Brummy—an’—an’ in hopes of a great an’ gerlorious rassaraction!”

He sat down on a log near by, rested his elbows on his knees and passed his hand wearily over his forehead—but only as one who was tired and felt the heat; and presently he rose, took up the tools, and walked back to the hut.

And the sun sank again on the grand Australian bush—the nurse and tutor of eccentric minds, the home of the weird, and of much that is different from things in other lands.

Molong Golf SUNDAY There were twenty three players for golf at Royal Molong on Sunday where we played an eighteen hole stableford event.

We welcomed back Choppers, Bob and Jim from Orange as well as a born and bred local in John Brown. It was good to see Scott Weekes having a hit with us again as well as Karl Gosper and the Woodhouse pairing of father and grandson (?).

A few of the regulars were missing but the number of people now playing golf is very good.

The winner on the day was Quinney with a very rude forty three stableford points, which is a great score in any competition. The Ghost Walker was a distant second with thirty five stableford points.

Stubba was on the golf course at daylight this morning placing the new fairway distance markers.

It was a good quality yarding with a good selection of young cattle to suit the feeder and processors along with some good runs of well finished grown steers and heifers. There were 115 cows yarded which were mostly prime heavy weights and there were a couple of small lines of weaners to suit the restockers. Most of the usual buyers were in attendance along with the return of a feeder operator from the south.

Young cattle to the trade were 6c to 9c dearer with prime vealers selling to 580c/kg. Prime steer yearlings sold from 465c to 556c, while the prime heifer yearlings sold from 460c to 544c/kg. Feeder steers were 12c cheaper while the feeder heifers were 10c dearer and more in places. Feeder steers sold from 470c to 578c, while the feeder heifers sold from 450c to 557c/kg.

Weaners to the restockers were up to 30c dearer with the young steers selling from 558c to 888c, while the young heifers going back to the

Daylight saving starts this coming Sunday morning where you turn the clock one hour forward. Golf is on again this Sunday, 8.30am for 9am daylight saving time. What type of event we play will be decided on the morning. See you there! paddock sold from 450c to 858c/kg.

Steer yearlings to the backgrounders were considerably dearer selling from 549c to 696c/kg.

Grown steers and heifers were up to 10c dearer with the prime grown steers selling from 440c to 495c/kg.

Prime grown heifers sold from 425c to 500c/kg. Cows were 7c cheaper with the 2 and 3 scores selling from 260c to 385c/kg. Prime heavy weight cows sold from 370c to 420c to average 409c/kg. Heavy weight bulls sold to 346c/kg.

CTLX SHEEP 22 September

It was a pretty good quality yarding with a good selection of trade weight new season lambs. There was the odd pen of heavy weight old lambs along with very few Merino lambs. Additionally, there was a large consignment of Merino wether hoggets. Most of the usual buyers were in attendance and operating.

Trade weight new season lambs were firm to $3 dearer selling from $170 to $244/head to average between 935c and 975c/kg cwt. The few trade weight old lambs were up to $12 dearer selling from $160 to $250/head. Heavy weight lambs were considerably dearer with few to compare to in the previous sale.

Lambs weighing 24 to 30kg lambs sold from $250 to $280 while lambs over 30kg sold between $320 and $340/head to average from 920c to 975c/kg cwt. A pen of heavy weight new season lambs sold for $255/ head. Merino lambs were around firm with trade weights selling from $160 to $208 while heavy weight Merino lambs sold to $238/head. Restocker lambs were firm to $2 dearer selling from $159 to $191/head.
