Rolfey's new journey

Jonathan Rolfe was a three year old when his mum and dad, Marie and Ray, moved to Molong to set up their electrical biz.

The Rolfe's became popular members of the town - involved in local business, golf club members, and supporters of all things 'local'. Marie and Ray were highly respected and well-loved.

Their only child, Jonathan, grew up and remained living in Molong for some 68 years where he followed in Ray's footsteps and Marie's in becoming a popular and active resident of the town - and, continued providing a unique small business.

Anne Rolfe is also a popular and respecterd member of the Molong community. Anne and her siblings often came to town to holiday and visit their grandparents (Maxwell). Anne then moved to Molong with her parents, Arthur and Kate Sullivan, where she completed high school and gained local employment.

Returning to Molong in later years, Anne and Jonathan met again married - established a fabulous country clothing shop in the former Western Stores building - returning eventually to a homebased electrical/ag. business.

The Rolfe's have decided to retire to a warmer climate - purchasing a property at Singleton Heights. From there the newly retired couple will head off travelling, fishing, visiting family ... and enjoying a new journey.

Both Anne and Rolfey will be missed by the

wider town and district communities, their friends, neighbours etc.

Both have contributed enormously to the town and district in many different ways.

We wish them well, safe travels, good health and hope they will return to Molong to visit.

The Molong Community Garden is flourishing this year with the rain and our new Wicking bed in place - many thanks to Cameron Wild.

We have also had a visit from the children of the Cabonne Family Day Care who enjoyed helping make 2 amazing Scarecrows - and tasting the freshly picked carrots.

We are very grateful to Cheryn from HealthOne and her exercise group who have joined our ranks. We appreciate the help they provide.

On Thursday 5 November we are having a guest speaker coming to give us some advice and pointers on growing vegetables and looking after our gardens.

Anyone interested in learning about gardening is very welcome to come to the garden (located between the Anglican Church and healthONE to join us at 9.00am).

There’s a new arrival in town who would have to be thinking “Wow! I’ve arrived in paradise”.

Meet ‘Tilly’ a miniature Foxie who has come to live in a very special home - with two special people on hand - both keen to respond to her calls.

A week or so ago the couple’s son, Lenny Punch put out a social media message asking if anyone had a special puppy to sell.

“We lost ‘Amy’ a few months ago” said Monica.

“Ray and I were really upset to lose our 11 year old dog. I lost weight and we both missed Amy terribly.”

Noticing his parents sadness, Punchy drove them out Gulgong way to collect Tilly.

“We’re so glad to have her” said Monica as Tilly Bron Trethowan, former owner of the Molong Newsagency has popped up again after curled up in her little rug officially retiring. Looking much healthier, still smiling - Bron is back to organise another on her new mum’s lap. series of BRAG at the Molong Bowling Club. See P.15 Then, there’s Gossie, former Mayor, Bee Farmer, Farmer who preparers the greens for the Braggers. Not overlooking the ‘camera shy/ accolades shy’ Narelle and Phil McKenzie who are sighted, regularly, mowing, gardening, watering, pruning at the bowlo. The greens and grounds look marvellous. Great work!

Cumnock and Yeoval Potable Water Supply policy adopted Following extensive public engagement Cabonne Council has adopted a Cumnock and Yeoval Potable Water Supply policy.

This follows completion of a pipeline connecting the Molong Supply to the two towns.

Council has recognised the priority to connect the Cumnock and Yeoval townships to a potable water supply, to improve the community’s health, economic growth and security of water supply.

Completion of the Molong to Cumnock and Yeoval pipeline has provided the bulk water supply capability to enable potable water supply to the townships of Cumnock and Yeoval. The next phase of the project is the conversion of the existing non-potable water network of each town, including the provision of infrastructure within properties, to provide safe drinking water to residences.

All properties within the water supply area are liable to pay water charges as resolved in Council annual fees and charges, (except for those properties which are exempt from all rates as defined under the NSW Local Government Act 1993 Sect 555). These charges include usage and availability charges and any other approved Council charges.

All properties within the water supply area will be provided with a connection to the reticulated potable water supply installed and operated

by Council. This will include an approved water meter and backflow prevention device, which remain the property of Council, as well as minimum necessary pipework to provide a single suitable connection to the existing potable water supply at the property.

Council will undertake an inspection of the existing water

supply connection at each property to determine, in consultation with the property owner, or their nominated delegate, the most appropriate means of connecting the property to the reticulated potable water supply.

Council will, by mutual agreement with the property owner or their nominated delegate, undertake necessary plumbing work, at full cost to Council, to connect the property to the reticulated potable water supply. Council will provide a 12 month warranty on the agreed works from the date of installation .

Council will not meet the cost of undertaking plumbing work to address existing faults or deficiencies within the internal plumbing of the property, as determined by a licensed plumber, which are not required as part of the connection to the reticulated potable water supply.

All properties with an existin g independent water supply (rainwater tank, bore, surface water supply) must not be interconnected to the potable water supply once the property is connected to the reticulated potable water supply. Council will undertake an inspection of every property within the designated water supply area in Cumnock and Yeoval. to ensure the integrity of the potable water supply and, if necessary, direct the property owner to undertake necessary works to ensure no interconnections exist.

If a property owner refuses access to Council staff, or their approved contractors, to their property for the installation of, as a minimum, a water meter and backflow prevention device, this refusal will be confirmed in a letter to the property owner and a record maintained at Council.

Cudal Swimming Club Preparations are grant underway for “Stuart Towns 2021 Man From Ironbark Festival”

Member for Orange Phil Donato MP announced funding for the Cudal Amateur Swimming Club through the 2019/2020 Local Sporting Grant Program.

The Swimming Club gratefully received funding of $3,000 to go towards the purchase of an Infinity Start System, a waterproof clock and pool equipment for Ruby Whalan Memorial Pool.

Club Secretary Tina Hough said that the new Infinity Start System is a much-needed upgrade that will be a benefit to both the club members and the timekeepers.

“The new system is much better as it has a built in light that automatically flashes as the horn sounds,” Tina Hough explained. “This provides greater inclusiveness for the community and club members, and also means timekeepers are looking as well as listening, which makes timekeeping more efficient.”

Phil Donato said he was very pleased to have supported the Club’s application for this funding, which benefits the local community.

“It’s great to be able to do my part in assisting small sporting clubs, as they offer so much to our community,” Phil said. “This new equipment will make a big difference to this wonderful club, I’m proud to have supported the funding application for this project,” Phil Donato said.

Council backs plans for NYE laser show

Orange City Council is backing plans by local operators of Kennards Hire to take the annual NYE celebrations in a new direction : replacing fireworks with a major laser show at Wade Park.

Last night’s Orange City Council meeting decided to sponsor the event with $30,000 worth of funding.

Kennard Hire Regional Manager Craig McMahon has welcomed news of the funding support.

“We’ve been involved behind the scenes in the ‘NYE Party under the stars’ for a number of years now and we’ve seen what a fantastic community event it is,” Craig McMahon said. “We want to see it continue and that’s why we approached Council to see if something could happen.”

“Last year at the height of the summer there was some debate about staging a fireworks display. The quality of laser shows that are now available really solves that problem. The plans is to have a 45 minute spectacular display that will bring local families together.”

Orange mayor Cr Reg Kidd is already excited about the event.

“I’m impressed that Kennards Hire has recognised the value of an event like this for the Orange community and has put up their hand to bring it together,” Cr Reg Kidd said. “A community celebration at this time of the year will be very important.”

Kennard Hire Regional Manager Craig McMahon said planning will now begin in earnest.

The Stuart Town Advancement Association has announced that they will be running the 2021 Man From Ironbark Festival next Easter Saturday. The ever-popular festival will be returning and will be held on Easter Saturday, (4th April).

“With everything that has happened in 2020 with Covid-19, we believed it was important to announce now and start preparations for the 2021 festival” said Marcus Hanney, President of the STAA. “The STAA had always intended to take 2020 off and come back with a re vamped festival in 2021, as it turned out the 2020 break was forced upon us.”

The STAA, the long-time organisers of the festival, have decided to amend the format for the day. The 2021 event will be staged within the Stuart Town Recreation Grounds and oval as well as utilising the facilities within town.

“By staging the festival within the rec ground, it will allow us to put on a different looking, family friendly festival. Boehmes hall will be utilised to its full potential and we also be utilising Moxon Park as well as the Old Railway Hotel. While the main street will not be closed, the School of Arts Hall will be utilised” Said Marcus.

Bush Fire Royal Commission task to simply recommend findings of previous 58 inquiries The professional association representing some 1,000 forest scientists, researchers and forest professional managers, the Institute of Foresters (IFA/AFG) has called on the Bush Fire Royal Commission to simply audit and implement the last 58 inquiries, reviews and Royal Commissions on the issue if it wants to see meaningful forest management in Australia.

On the eve of the Bush Fire Royal Commission bringing down its findings to address the causes of the past tragic Black Summer 2019/20 fire season, the IFA said the root cause of the issue was the need to address appropriate land and fire management techniques.

IFA President, Bob Gordon said while Climate Change is a factor influencing fire weather, it is not the sole reason why Australia’s Black Summer wildfires burnt across multiple states and territories, burning nearly double the area of any previous major wildfires in a fire season.

“Arrangements that continue to focus on bushfire response rather than bushfire prevention accept that Australia shall continue to have major wildfires, needing to spend more taxpayer funds with little difference in outcomes.

Thus, continuing to threaten our communities and devastate our ecosystems,” Mr Gordon said.

“The IFA hopes the Royal Commission recommends arrangements that protect our ecological values, particularly the vegetation which supports our unique wildlife.

“Wildfires involve an interaction between fuel, weather, terrain, and climate. The state of the fuel is largely a product of land management.

Fuel is also a critical environmental factor, and much of Australia’s natural environment is adapted and reliant on the appropriate type of fire.

How many people who are overseas and wanting the government to help return them to Australia, left for overseas AFTER the DFAT’s advice to stay put and not travel?

I personally know 2 families that flew to the UK in March then were screaming and pressuring the Gov for the next 7 weeks to fly them home which eventually happened in late August. Only for 1 parent to go straight back to work when they were supposed to be in quarantine, but unfortunately when you have 5 figure numbers in your bank account you seem to be able to bypass some rules.

I just want to thank both the AFL and the NRL for pulling off what most of us thought was impossible and that was to have a GRANDFINAL at what was the most hardest season of Sport I have ever witnessed. Not only the football but also the A-League the Netball and even the Horse Racing because if you think like me it would have been a very very very long cold winter if none of many sportspeople and athlete's couldn't play their Sport. I want to thank all officials, staff and players from all competitions for completing what was an extremely hard and trying times, BUT they got to the End. Pauline and John......Caboose Community.

Proposal: “split train” service Sydney - Molong - Parkes

Lately, there has emerged social media interest in reopening Molong Railway Station and running trains from Molong to Orange. A push to repair and reopen the station has already been progressing.

However, the scenario to open the MRS for passenger trains by the Orange Rail Action Group - with the support and approval of the already involved local organisations - is most likley to be the successful one.

In the interest of seeing that these worthwhile efforts are not fragmented to the detriment of progress, here we reprint an earlier Express report on the proposal - complete with draft timetable. (by Paul Mullins)

Following an informal meeting with various interested parties at Molong Station in June of this year, The Orange Rail Action Group (ORAG) has developed a concept for possible passenger train schedules for the OrangeMolongParkes section of the Main Western Line.

ORAG is seeking interest and support from the Molong Advancement Group and Cabonne Council for proposals to re-develop Molong Station and promotion of modern rail transport within the Central West, after the arrival of the new Regional Fleet after 2023.

ORAG proposes that the replacement for the “XPT” train be 2 joined sets of 3 cars each. These split at Orange (at the touch- of-a-button by the driver) and proceed to Parkes and Dubbo, as 3 car sets.

They rejoin at Orange on their return. The other proposal is a new 3 car set leaving Parkes on the morning and returning in the evening of the same day. Three extra cars may to be added to the current fleet order.

ORAG will propose this concept to Government at State and Federal levels in the near future.

ORAG presented this concept to the Parkes Mayor and General Manager.

The response is reported to be very enthusiastic.

Mayor Keith presented it to the Board of Central NSW Joint Organisations

recently.

As a result, ORAG is invited to present the concept to the CNSWJO Board meeting in November.

ORAG presented the same ideas to Orange City Council Mayor Reg Kidd, Mr Phil Donato MP and members of the Millthorpe Village Committee, with similar support.

The latter proposes to endorse it with the Mayor of Blayney Shire, in the near future. ORAG now seeks MAG and Cabonne Council to support it locally and at the CNSWJO level. NSW Government Departments usually seek “community input” through Joint Organisations of Councils.

Molong’s Pantry: How the dream of food relief in a small town, became a big reality

When the threat of Coronavirus first reached Australian shores, we entered a panic-worthy reality – beginning preparations of a nation about to see an altered state of living from the norms.

Recent reports from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) showed the fallout rates of COVID to have impacted approximately 2.7 million Australians – this regarded the exit of people from the labour force, reduced work hours, and overall job loss specifically.

Comprehensively, these economic downturns brought varying levels of psychological costs along with them – with mental distress having said to skyrocket as a direct result of the pandemic’s financial strains.

Considering the realities of this quick snapshot in time, leaves little room to wonder why the food relief industry has played such a pivotal role in communities this year – with the statistics for food demand in 2020 seeing a marked increase, and food relief groups more or less rolling out by the wayside.

With preemptive concerns in mind for how the pandemic could directly impact our members within the Cabonne communities, local Molong woman, Donna Nancarrow, started putting out feelers in late March earlier this year – with the hopes we could see the launch of our own food relief project make it’s way off the ground here too.

“I was really concerned (about) how regional towns would cope with the impact of COVID, and what that would look like for us,” Donna explained.

“Once lockdowns were imposed – how would our people be able to tap into help?

What would this mean for our isolated elderly residents (who) aren’t on social media? How would they get food, and provisions – and how would we know if they were okay?”

In a bid to put our smaller regional towns on the front foot, Donna researched what the rest of the world were doing in response to the initial outbreak, as we

were around one month behind in terms of severity. Stumbling across a community group in Aberdeen, Scotland, Donna sought help by writing to their founder – and received some wonderful advice in return.

“They were super proactive in getting quick help to the needy with shopping and pharmaceutical drops, plus connecting (them) with the greater community with check-in calls. They also had a hall that

housed donated food, so people who had lost their jobs could rely on basic food packs.”

Online meetings were soon established, where a range of key community members banded together to bounce ideas off the wall. From here, the Cabonne Mutual Aid Support Group was formed – a team of community volunteers, supporting members of Molong and surrounding towns, to be able to access support if needed.

Hurling forward with big ideas, and what was anticipated to be a big, foreseen challenge, Julie and Wayne Spencer, from the Molong Baptist Church were approached – where they immediately started making headway with the logistics of how these ideas would materialise, and be brought to life.

“We hit many red lights, and it looked like a pretty impossible task,” Julie explained.

With Foodbank’s books at the time closed to new clientele, initial relief relied heavily on public donations to kickstart the project, while also seeking the help of food rescue organisations – such as Hope Care in Bathurst, ‘SecondBite’, and (largely) The Food Rescue Group in the Central West, to name a few.

“On the 1st of May, the Central West Food Rescue Group truck arrived in Molong with two pallets of essential items, as well as fruit and vegetables,” Julie said.

“Overnight, Molong’s Pantry went from (being) a dream to becoming reality – and we quickly saw that the need (for food relief) was real in our community.”

Molong’s Yarn Market: A Fresh Makeover

By Emily Gobourg After the pandemic saw the Molong Yarn Market sadly having to shut shop for six months, the ladies were finally able to reopen the doors last month, September 19th – and some all-new renovations have taken place.

Barb Strong, Yarn Market treasurer, shared about some of the difficulties over those recent months, and how their (allvoluntary) team of amazing women pulled together during the tough time – along with the help of some three generous, and communityminded men.

“During COVID, I couldn’t expose the ladies,” explained Barb.

“It wasn’t a risk we were willing to take.”

From a socially safe distance, volunteer members put their heads together, and worked hard to brainstorm ideas toward a refurbishment plan –essentially using the store’s inactive time as usefully, and proactively as they could.

“The ideas for a new look came from a number of our volunteers, including their family members.

We ended up with the decision to rip some of those shelves out, and ‘can’ that ‘1970’s look,” laughed Barb.

Through the voluntary work of Borenore men Ian Culverson, and Les Davis, including Barb’s son, Brent Strong – that’s exactly what they did. “(The men) worked 700 odd hours between themselves – all voluntary hours.”

Shelves were dismantled to make way for the installation of new shelving, which brought the addition of having a fresh lay-out system to display the Yarn Market’s range of wonderfully homegrown talent – from handcrafted creations, to beautifully packaged preserves, and homemade giftware.

Though finances are expectedly a little lower at present, the inclusion of new lighting is also set to go ahead in the next month or so – with Barb, and Vice President, Lyn Maxwell, extremely proud with how a small yet powerful community has come together – especially when the chips are down.

“They give so much of their time, our volunteers. We’d never be able to operate without them – and it’s because of our women that we’ve been able to re-open.”

Having personally cleared four cacti from the shelves, along with some beautifully hand-sewn items only some weeks ago – the women are consistently restocking, and replenishing beautifully-made items – and very much look forward to seeing all new, and existing faces in the revamped store.

Operational for the past 48 years, Molong’s Yarn Market hopes to continue in business for Fresh shots from the refurbished Yarn Market in Molong. Molong’s Pantry

(Continued from page 6) Not without its stumbling blocks – and through the unity of community-minded people and organisations working together as one – we then saw the birth of Molong’s Pantry, which unfolded on May 2nd, 2020.

Operating from the hall of Molong District Baptist Church, and run as a Ministry of the Baptist church, this community-based food pantry has since welcomed members of the Cabonne area from all over – opening its doors twice weekly to people from all walks of life – and providing crucial food relief.

Though the crux of Molong's Pantry keeps the idea of struggling community members at its heart, there is certainly no discrimination when it comes to providing low-cost pantry essentials, food produce items, and emergency hampers – to anyone finding themselves in need of a helping hand.

“We are trying our best to support the community through this difficult time, (and) to help people through their week,” Julie stated. “There is no criteria to accessing the community pantry – everyone is welcome.”

Run solely by volunteers from both the church, and members of the local community, Molong Pantry said its vision is to continue running this food relief project for as long as the community needs the support, with biannual reviews to take place as ongoing.

“We would like to say a huge thank you for everyone’s generosity. It has been such a privilege to watch the community love and support each other,” Julie added.

With two of their major rural suppliers, Manildra Group and MSM Milling, helping to provide food aid for the past dozen years, Foodbank have now joined the ranks in extending their support to the Molong Pantry in a recently announced partnership. This further marks the ongoing dedication and generosity from our regional organisations, and shows the need for invaluable sources of relief, which also underpins the true meaning of community – especially when the chips are down.

“I’m extremely proud and humbled by the generosity of this town (that) my family and I have now called home for the past nine years,” said Donna. “I’m a city girl by birth, but now a country girl at heart – as this community has taught me so much about what it means to belong, and how neighbours can stand shoulder to shoulder – or elbow to elbow, as the case has it – for the greater good.”

Molong’s Pantry runs out of the Molong District Baptist Church (located around the bend from the police station on Thistle Street), and is in operation every Tuesday, from 8:30 to 10:30am, and each Saturday, from 10:00am to 12 noon.

Molong was the venue chosen by the Orange Branch of Can Assist for their latest fundraising event held last weekend.

Popular artist, Michael Carroll was pleased to support the fundraiser with a fabulous exhibition of his latest paintings and drawings created in his Molong studio.

Orange artist, Jo Allen received accolades for her soft fabric work exhibits - particularly those outlining a journey she has had with breast cancer.

The two exhibitions together were well received by the large number of attendees - including the official opening on Saturday afternoon where a delicious afternoon tea was served by Can Assist volunteers.

President of the Orange Branch, Helen Corby, said that members were very happy with the venue at the Molong RSL Club and the support received by local and Orange residents. “Some travelled from far away places to support the fundraiser” said Helen.

“In rural and regional NSW a cancer diagnosis is made more

difficult by the financial burden of travel and accommodation expenses” said Helen Corby.

“In fact, it can easily cost someone five times more to access their treatment than it would in the city.”

“Can Assist Orange Branch is dedicated to supporting anyone in our community affected by cancer.

We understand that following a cancer diagnosis, families can struggle with the associated costs (including accomodation away from home, travel, medical, food, utility bills, vehicle maintenance).

By keeping the money we raise locally, it stays local so we can help residents with direct financial support when needed the most.”

Blood pressure is the pressure of blood against artery walls. We all need some blood pressure, called normal blood pressure, to stay alive, but blood pressure that is higher than normal can be dangerous. A healthy lifestyle helps keep blood pressure normal and some medicines can help to reduce high blood pressure.

Everyone’s blood pressure varies with their daily activities. For example,our blood pressure is usually lower when we sleep and higher when we are excited or anxious. Blood pressure that is constantly higher or lower than the normal range can cause serious problems. The medical name for constantly high blood pressure is hypertension.

Signs and symptoms Most people with high blood pressure have no symptoms and feel well.

However, over time, constantly high blood pressure can cause heart and blood vessel disease and lead to problems including: . brain damage (e.g. stroke, dementia) . heart damage (e.g. heart attack heart failure) CHRONIC CONDITIONS . kidney damage . eye damage (e.g.blindness).

The only way to find out if blood pressure is high is to measure it.

Regular blood pressure checks can help to detect high blood pressure before any damage is done The Heart Foundation recommends a blood pressure check every 1-2 years for people with normal blood pressure and no risk factors for heart and blood vessel disease. More frequent check are advised if you have high blood pressure or risk factors for heart and blood vessel disease. Ask a doctor for advice.

Measuring blood pressure Blood pressure is usually measured by wrapping an inflatable pressure cuff around the upper arm. The cuff is connected to a pressure-measuring device that measures blood pressure in millimetres of mercury (mmHg).

Electronic blood pressure machines are available and some are suitable for use at home.

Stroke Prevention: New Technology Available For Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) Detection

By Emily Gobourg Following recent media attention, the importance of heart health has been an ongoing highlight in the news.

Put simply, Atrial Fibrillation (also known as AF, or AFib) – a major cause of stroke in Australia – is a type of heart arrhythmia.

According to The Heart Foundation, heart arrhythmia sees the heart beating irregularly, and often faster than it should be – where the top two chambers of our heart (atria) will twitch, instead of contract. When these twitches occur, they beat out of usual rhythm with the heart’s lower two chambers (ventricles) – which then causes abnormal electrical activity, with messages to our heart becoming rather chaotic.

This explained how the ability of the heart to pump blood properly is then reduced, where the chances of blood clots forming in the heart are increased – which can then travel to the brain, and ultimately, cause a stroke.

While often there are limited to no warning signs, some common symptoms of AF have been reported to include: feeling breathless, feeling faint, dizzy or lightheaded, racing heart (palpitations), fatigue or weakness, chest discomfort, and difficulty exercising.

To lower the risk of developing AFib, it is strongly suggested to take some preventative steps. These are: to manage our blood pressure, maintain a healthy weight, be physically active, reduce alcohol intake (to less than or equal to three standard drinks a week), manage diabetes (if diagnosed), and, if a smoker – to actively work towards quitting.

AF screening is most recommended for people over the age of 65, for people over the age of 50 with a history of high blood pressure, as well as those with diabetes, coronary heart failure, and, for prior stroke sufferers.

Managing blood pressure, and knowing whether AF is present early on, is the first proactive step in reducing risk of stroke. With medical technology constantly on the rise, early diagnosis and ongoing screening of blood pressure (followed by sufficient treatment), can significantly reduce the onset of stroke – and this is why more people are opting to manage their own blood pressure measurements at home.

To keep an eye on how the heart is tracking, advanced technology can now be found in small blood pressure monitor machines – they are able to reliably screen for, and accurately detect AF during measurements. These at-home machines then provide important information for General Practitioners (GP), who are then able to refer those people for further electrocardiogram (ECG) medical testing.

With this type of new technology now available at Molong Pharmacy, staff are encouraging anyone interested to come in for a chat, where more information will be readily available.

Our lifestyle can affect our blood pressure and the health of our heart and blood vessels. Lifestyle factors that can contribute to high blood pressure and to heart and blood vessel disease include: Too much salt in the diet, too much fat in the diet, being overweight, drinking too much alcohol, not enough physical exercise, smoking, stress.

The risks of high blood pressure and heart and blood vessel disease increase with age and are also higher for people who: have a family history of hypertension, have certain medical conditions (e.g. diabetes, high cholesterol, sleep apnoea), take certain medicines (e.g. oral contraceptives).

Important Seek advice from a doctor if you have: . diastolic blood pressure consistently over 90 mmHg or systolic blood pressure consistently over 140 mmHg, shortness of breath, palpitations (irregular heart beat), blurred vision, dizziness, repeated nose bleeds, . repeated or prolonged headaches.

Roland David Lyons

Elizabeth Kerle’s eulogy, kindly supplied by Roley’s daughter Mary-Ellen Betts

Bush Fire Brigade given life membership having served for 60 plus years in 2016, he was also secretary of the Brigade for 30 years.

Dad was a member of the Masonic Lodge for over 40 years.

Dad was very community minded - these are just a few of the other community organisations he was involved in: • Euchareena Gymkhana Committee member • 1979 he was campaign manager for Helen Haynes when she ran for Council • Treasurer of the Euchareena School Centenary Celebrations • Committee member of the Kinross Wolaroi Old Boys Association for many years.

• Active in the P&C Associations of Euchareena and Orange Public Schools • Euchareena Progress Committee • Trustee for the Euchareena Soldiers Memorial Hall.

Being a farmer was all he knew but due to all of our extra curricular activities-dad was dragged off the farm for ballet concerts, netball, volleyball, hockey softball, girl guide activities, Duke of Edinburgh Award and volunteering! This led him after the tragic passing of our mother in 1984, to meet Gwen at these Girl guide activities as the guide hall was named in mum’s honour.

There was a fire at the hall and Dad went to check out the damage and as Gwen tells it - checked out the Guide leader instead and asked her out.

Dad and Gwen married in April of 1988. 1989 was the year of two historic moments when Dad achieved his highest number of wool bales at 200 and a baby boy Thomas Cooper in November of that year!! Gwen was roused on as his due date clashed with shearing !

Baby Thomas kept Dad young and Thomas has been hen-pecked and loved by his older sisters. Dad again became involved in school and sporting activities at both Euchareena and Wolaroi.

Dad has had many achievements and milestones which we have been very proud of : He worked “Womera” which became a well respected medium wool property. He expanded in 1987 and completed the linkage when he purchased Springville shearing block in 2000.

Dad adopted technology readily by building a state of the art shearing shed in 1983, earliest adoption of aerial super spreading and seeding, direct drilling, he kept abreast with technology by computer/email, pregnancy scanning, AI, whole farming planning, tree planting.

Dad also proudly volunteered for the 2000 Olympics due to his knowledge of technology in the media centre.

Dad loved travelling, he was fortunate to visit New Zealand,Canada, Ireland, Scotland and Europe-enjoying activities such as fly fishing, skiing, moose hunting, Curling.

Dad was very successful in his farming enterprises and built himself a property that he and all of us are proud of !! He was very monetary conscious and I’m sure business wise some of you would have had bills or accounts scrutinised.

Old Roley loved a bargain and even more so if it was free !!

Dad never had time to explain what we had to do in sheep yards, or when acting as a mechanics assistant when fixing trucks we were just expected to know and most of the time we got it right but we new quick smart when we didn't. Visiting family members or our friends were Janet, Ian, Roley & Deidre in younger days (Rosemary was another sister) always viewed as extra free labour put to work to help along came Elizabeth, Fiona, Gillian & Mary-Ellen. Dad with bigger jobs and we wouldn't have had it any other won a competition for architectural house plans and built way. The grandchildren loved school holidays when they the house at Womera which is the home he shared with could come and work with Pa on the farm.

In Dad’s rare downtime he loved to go fishing whether Helen and then Gwen until this day.

Dad was quiet a social creature and loved the odd it be by himself, on family holidays and in later years he night out with family and friends. In earlier days this had a few outings with the Molong Fishing Club.

Dad had a few common phrases that he has used since socialising lead him to miss out on a couple of important we were little, but we never ever heard him swear much, family occasions one of note being Fiona's Christening!

Dad was an active member of Apex which he was that is until Mary taught him how !!

Some of those phrases are: honoured as Life Member.

“You girls will be the death of me” Dad was also an active member of the Euchareena Affectionately known as Roley, Rolls, Joe, Joe 1, Unc, Dad and Pa was born on the 10th October 1937. As dad would say a 37 drop was born Frank and Beryl Lyons “Yarrawonga” Euchareena.

He was a brother to Janet, 2 years his senior and later to Ian, Deirdre and Rosemary. Early days on the farm were filled with many adventures with his siblings and cousins. Dad didn’t go to school until he could successfully ride his horse to Boomey. One recollection of sibling antics was on their daily ride home from school, Dad fell off his horse and Janet ran to aid him and there was blood everywhere she rode her horse flat out from Beri to ‘Yarrawonga’ to get her father and in return found Dad riding home on his horse. Turned out it was just squashed tomatoes he'd put down his shirt from Aunty Mona!! Another time the boys were mucking around and shot Aunty Diddy with an air rifle and she fell out of the tree she was climbing at the time.

Dad went to Wolaroi boarding school from 1950 to 1953 and often reflected on his times sleeping in the Orange winters on the open verandah of the old Wolaroi house. He told stories of how Richard, his cousin, ran away from school and beat Aunty Mary home via the train to Euchareena. And, how Dad didn’t have any wood for his woodwork project and ran down the front drive to the fringe of the school boundary and broke a branch off a tree and took it to the wood work rooms so to not get in trouble and successfully turned it into a wooden lamp, one which is still treasured to this day !! Wolaroi education allowed him to make life-long friends and connections in which he enjoyed being an active member of the ex-student association and later with his children Mary and Thomas attending the school.

Dad left school at the age of 16 and his first job was clearing land at Womera for his father in the Little Back paddock, some old trees still bearing his ring mark to this day. Dad made his first wages wool classing.

Dad enjoyed rural life and pursued agriculture as his chosen career and attended Junior Farmer events after school at Fairbridge, also tractor school at Hawkesbury Agricultural College, His hobby in these early years was learning to fly, gaining his license in and completing his first solo flight in 1961 Often telling us of his emergency stop at Pretty Plains in a paddock near Bathurst to go to the toilet coming back from a courting rendezvous with Mum. Dad met Helen when she did her nursing training with his sister Janet. This started a long distance romance as Mum lived in Hurstville and then nursed at Broken Hill!

In the mornings he would whistle while bringing us a cuppa in bed and say “Wakey,Wakey, Rise & Shine & give off your glory glory.”

He used to say that when we were all little he walked the hallways so much with us on his shoulder burping us that he wore holes in our singlets.

And of course we can’t forget him telling us a good old Picken boy story at bedtime.

Dad was very proud of all his children and followed with pride as we have made our way in the world in our chosen careers and as we have married and started our own families. We have all been privileged to be able to work along side Dad whether it be during school holidays, annual leave, days off or on a more full time basis as Mary and more recently Fiona have been able to. He didn't always agree with our choices but ultimately if we were safe and happy it was ok with him.

He was very proud of his grandchildren and loved hearing about what they were up to.

We would like to thank those who worked with Dad on Womera, especially during Dads deteriorating health with his Parkinsons & Dementia for their patience and care. Bob Pope who recently passed away, (he and Dad are probably straining up the entrance to the pearly gate as we speak ) and David Lyons known as Fred.

We would like to thank Gwen for looking after dad as he became increasingly dependant on her and especially in the last months before he went into hospital. It was clear how much he loved her as in these last few months he was always worried about her when they were apart.

Gwen and all his children were blessed to spend Dad's last days with him.

Well Dad, the sheep and cattle are fed, the oats is growing tall. Park the tractor in the shed, shut the gate and go fishing.

We love you!

Cattle 27 October It was a good quality yarding with good numbers in all sections to suit the processors along with fair numbers of yearlings to suit the feeders. There were also better numbers of young weaners to suit the restockers. Most of the regular buyers were operating along with additional restocker support. The market was strong.

Weaners to the restockers were up to 35c dearer with the young steers selling from 439c to 614c while the young restocker heifer weaners sold from 395c to 565c/kg.

Young cattle to the trade were 7c dearer with prime vealers selling to 441c/kg. Prime steer yearlings sold from 378c to 430c while the heifer yearlings sold to 435c/kg. Feeder steers were firm to 4c dearer selling from 365c to 435c/kg. Yearlings to the restockers were also dearer with the steers selling from 417c to 500c while the heifer yearlings to the restockers sold from 366c to 467c/ kg. Grown steers and heifers were 4c to 6c dearer with the prime grown steers selling from 320c to 377c while the grown heifers sold from 330c to 385c/kg.

Sheep 21 October It was another very good quality yarding with a top selection of both trade and heavy weight new season lambs along with some very heavy old lambs. There were only a few pens of Merino lambs yarded. Most of the regular buyers were in attendance and operating.

Trade weight new season lambs were $7 dearer selling from $153 to $203/head to average between 775c and 825c/kg cwt.

The few trade weight old lambs sold from $152 to $186/head. Heavy weight lambs were $10 to $14 dearer with the new season lambs over 24kg selling from $185 to $252/ head. Heavy weight old lambs sold to $260/ head. The few Merino lambs were around firm with trade weights selling from $148 to $180/head. Hoggets sold to $225/head.

It was a mostly very good quality yarding of mutton where most grades were $11 to $18/ head dearer. Merino ewes sold from $100 to $200 while crossbred ewes made from $144 to $220/head. Crossbred wethers sold to $217 while Merino wethers sold from $145 to $191/head. The restockers paid from $117 to $142 for Merino ewes and sold from $190 to $236/head for crossbred ewes.

Molong Women’s Bowls Social Bowls at Manildra Wednesday 21/10/20 Manildra Bowling Club had put on an enjoyable social bowling day, inviting Molong bowlers to help support their club. The Manildra ladies were great hosts.

Millthorpe and Orange ex Services Country Club were also in attendance. Hazel Hamilton and Marianne Riley represented Molong Consistency Bowls Due to the wet weather the consistency bowls will be rescheduled for a later date.

Wednesday Golf:: Cumnock Golf Club hosted our annual Cancer Day fundraiser last Wednesday. It was a very successful and great day for golf with players from Molong, Manildra and Orange all agreeing it was a lovely day. Ann Wood and her partner Donna were the overall winners. Next Wednesday 4th November we will be starting at 8.00 for a tee off at 8.30am. **************** Sunday Mixed Golf: Driving out to Royal Molong last Sunday I thought that nobody would come out to play in the weather we were having - but I’d at least be there to open up in case somebody did.

To my surpise 10 people came out to battle the elements. Started out as a 9 hole Stableford event, but one group lost interest half way through.

Apologies to the other group for not asking how they went. But it seemed by the banter they had a good time. A heavy downpour forced us in - no scores were recorded as putting the greens was slow. Thanks for those who came. Next week we will try for an 18 hole stroke event - weather permitting - and hopefully some serious golf will be played. Tee-Off 8.30 a.m. - 9.00 a.m.
