One of Molong’s Christmas traditions took place last Saturday when local motorcyclists headed off on a 100km ride to fundraise for the Salvation Army’s Christmas Appeal.

Margaret and Brian Dean of the Salvos were pleased to accept the money raised ($1,300) and toys donated by the riders, the Molong RSL Club Snooker Club, and residents to help local families - to ‘give hope where it is needed the most’.

GROW Molong Inc.

There’s not a long story to tell about the formation of GROW Molong Inc. Suffice to say that a group of entrepreneurial traders, business owners, building owners and residents responded recently to a simple invitation offering ... well, hardly anything really. There was just enough info to arouse the curiousity of entrepreneurs and those with creative minds who love seeking possibilities - and the opportunity to take a walk ‘off the beaten track’ to explore adventurous ideas to GROW Molong.

The only example one can give of GROW Molong Inc. could relate to Channel Ten’s ‘Shark Tank’ (seen it?) described as “entrepreneurs assessing killer ideas”.

Molong has plenty of ‘killer ideas’. We hear them most days of the week - in homes, around kitchen tables, in men’s caves, businesses, cafes, streets, pubs, clubs, volunteer groups, schools, hospitals, medical centres, hairdressers, butcher shops, newsagencies, supermarkets ... everywhere.

Drought-affected farmers: financial assistance is available Approaching the festive season, let’s remember that many Australian farmers have had a tough year because of the drought.

Many say it’s the worst in living memory.

Farmers are incredibly resilient, strong and proud. Droughtaffected farmers show remarkable strength of character, coping with determination in the face of hardships, doing their best to prepare ahead of time for the conditions they are experiencing.

Yet, with no rain to break the dry spell, the road to recovery is long.

The drought has rallied support for farmers in towns and cities Australia-wide. Tens of thousands of people donated to the Red Cross “Help Aussie Farmers" appeal.

With these contributions and with our local partners, the Country Women’s Association and Rural Financial Counselling Service, we have reached thousands of farmers and farming families with financial

assistance.

Some farmers are reluctant to seek financial support – for all sorts of reasons. However, farmers tell us it’s easy to apply for the funds donated to Red Cross. They say the funds reach them quickly to cover household expenses such as groceries and utility bills.

If you’re a drought-affected farmer or reliant on farming for your livelihood, please come forward for support. Let us ease the burden.

Looking towards Christmas, we encourage you to keep connected and check on family and friends to ensure they are okay. Remember, the whole country is thinking of you.

Marie and John continue working for Molong Meet Peter Batten & Caddie Marshall

MAG “Destination Molong” Public Meeting Thursday 13 December 2018 @ 7 pm @ the Molong RSL Club Peter Batten, the new and dynamic Chairperson of the Molong Advancement Group, is a long-time resident of Molong and Garra - a Cabonne Shire Councillor - and a true believer in the significant potential Molong has to gain from the tourist/ visitor market.

Caddie Marshall is the entrepreneurial General Manager for the new tourism body which covers Cabonne, Orange and Blayney. Titled Orange 360 this new look tourism body is really going places in promoting Molong/Cabonne Country.

Together Peter and Caddie have organised an important Molong community forum to seek ideas from residents, business owners, youth, families etc. to help unlock the potential of our town to increase tourist and visitor numbers.

MAG has achieved significant progress for Molong - two of the many achievements being the East Molong Hockey Fields and the Molong Village Markets. Both bring visitors and tourists to town in growing numbers.

Peter and Caddie both believe that Molong is a town with enormous potential still waiting to be ‘claimed’. They also believe that it is the people, the residents of Molong who know their town better than anyone - and have ideas about ways to unlock this potential.

“MAG has built a good base from which further tourism, infrastructure and business ideas can be explored and added to” said Peter who is recognised as a positive and inspiring community leader.

Both Peter and Caddie are mindful that the answers for Molong of the future will come from the residents, long-term and new and youth.

“We are hoping that the planned forum on Thursday 13 November will bring together new ideas for MAG to progress” said Peter.

The Molong Historical Museum has survived, and grown, through the years of volunteer hours given by keen historian, Marie Hammond supported by husband, John (handyman, jack of all trades - and master of many). A former Molong resident (nee Evers) - Marie took over the running of the museum. “At the time, no-one was interested in taking the role of President and there were significant building problems. With her desire to see the building, and the Museum continue for future generations to enjoy - Marie and John rolled up their sleeves, applied for grants, held many a working bee and set about

with an initial $90,000 grant (almost unheard of at the time) to repair the challenges of what was the Golden Fleece Inn built back in the 1800’s. Whilst recently stepping down from the Presidency and committee - Marie and John will continue to volunteer at the museum assisting the new committee with the further development of key projects. “We love the museum and Molong” said Marie. “It’s an important part of our lives.” The Hammonds are an important part of the Molong story with a wealth of knowledge and skills which the museum and town value and respect. Last Saturday Marie and John received a huge applause from the new committee and members at the museum’s annual general meeting for their outstanding efforts in keeping Molong’s centre for history alive.

"We lost our precious son Tom in the blink of an eye. We don’t want this to happen to anyone else. The emotional cost is just too high and our lives have been sadly changed forever. That’s why the 'Hold My Hand' message is so important," said Tom’s mother.

The Little Blue Dinosaur Foundation has partnered with the Bathurst, Blayney, Cabonne, Dubbo, Forbes Shire, Gilgandra, Lachlan Shire, Moree Plains, Orange and Warrumbungle Councils for its “Hold My Hand” campaign, which encourages parents and carers to hold children’s hands when they are close to roadways. “There will be over 200 signs installed around parks and playgrounds in all ten councils.

“Children have physical, perceptual and cognitive limitations around roads which makes them unable to make safe and informed decisions around roads and traffic,” said Michelle McLaughlin, CEO and Founder of The little Blue Dinosaur Foundation.

"The Hold My Hand Signs are a great reminder to hold a child’s hand every time they leave the safety of our playgrounds. It is imperative that we hold their hands until age 10 and supervise them closely until age 12.”

The Little Blue Dinosaur Foundation was established in memory of four-year-old Tom McLaughlin, who tragically passed away in a pedestrian roadway accident while on a Central Coast family holiday in 2014. "Many of our children’s parks are near roadways, and I commend the councils who are now fencing their playgrounds and posting signage to keep children safe. We are delighted that these ten Central West NSW Councils are erecting the signs around the playgrounds and parks in the areas to help ensure we keep our precious children safe.

“We now have 42 councils in 4 states of Australia working with us to spread our child pedestrian safety messages.”

The campaign kicked off this week with an official launch event in Orange at Elephant Park on Woodward Street with several local Mayors and senior stakeholders attending.

Meet Molong Central School Student, Josh Dowler

Josh Dowler is amongst thirteen Year 11 students from across Western NSW to be awarded the 2018 Victor Chang School Science Award.

The prestigious award is named after the late Dr. Victor Chang, the famous cardiac surgeon and heart transplant pioneer who tragically lost his life on 4 July 1991.

The award celebrates both the brilliant work of Dr. Chang, his committment to the training of cardiac and heart transplant surgeons, and the continued growth and recognition of scientific studies in schools.

Josh and the twelve Year 11 students selected from across Western NSW have been chosen for the promise they have demonstrated in the areas of science, technology, engineering, mathematics and the significant results they have achieved in the classroom.

Terry Bruton, the Head of Science at the Molong Central School, nominated Josh for the award. "Josh studies physics and chemistry and has been top of his class" said Mr Bruton. "He is a dedicated student who has a real interest in the sciences and is a great role model" he said of the popular and gifted student who has been chosen as the 2019 School Captain by both students and academics.

Dr. Alastair Stewart of the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute said that "it's through students that the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics will continue to flourish in Australia. "As a scientist you not only contribute to building knowledge and understanding, but you're also a drive in economic, environmental, health, social and technological advances."

Josh and the twelve Year 11 students from the region will have the opportunity to be included on a tour of the Victor Chang Institute and have contact with world renowed scientists.

The Best Kept Secret in rural NSW

The Amusu Theatre and Movie Museum - Manildra Worth a Visit Grandkids will ask - what did you do before TV?

People, up until TV came to town, gathered at 'the pictures' otherwise fondly known as 'the fleas and itches'.

In Manildra in 1923, Allan Tom realised his dream to bring movies to town and to places further out west where locals craved any kind of contact with 'modern movies' and the chance to sight the all time greats, Clarke Gable, Humphrey Bogart, Katherine Hepburn.and many others from Hollywood where the film industry made movies about passion and romance, drama, westerns, horror, comedy etc.

Recently, the Committee of Manildra's Amusu Theatre (created by Allan and still standing and showing movies today) held celebrations in honour of Allan Tom's achievements remembering the story of the movie enthusiast who loved bringing fun and enjoyment to the lives of those living in what were remote locations back then.

Allan took his 'Travelling Picture Show' to places like Tullamore, Peak Hill, Millthorpe, Cudal and of course,

Manildra. He screened the latest in film cylinders at halls, marquees (in all kinds of weather) taking entertainment to people in remote outback areas. Over the 72 years Allan, known as the Picture Show Man, travelled and showed the latest on his big screens. Country folk enjoyed everything from the silent to the 'talkies' until 1995 when he put his last reel through the projector - only one week before his passing at the age of 93. A remarkable man.

In October 1996 Manildra's Amusu Theatre was listed on the State Heritage Register of NSW. Today, through the tireless efforts of Joan Stevenson, supported by husband Alan, Allan Tom's daughter Lyn Woodhart, Norm Penson, Ben Cowling, Alan and Madeleine Strahan the Amusu Theatre lives on - with the added bonus of the Movie Poster Museum.

What a magnificent display of movie-world exhibits and rare collectables. It's worth the visit to experience the fascinating history and growth of the big screen industry from the start to the technological advancements of today where some will be heard commenting - not half as interesting as yesterday!!

Interesting art-deco architecture is the first feature movie goers see when they arrive at the Amusu Theatre and adjoining Movie Museum. Open the doors ... and there's the movie greats peering down from the walls in the theatre and original features from the 1920's still in place. The Movie Poster Museum next door is a treasure trove of movie posters, filming equipment, movie memorabilia ... and history like no other.

Gone Fishing ... Remembering Jake A couple of Saturday's ago, Jake Whiting set off with a couple of mates to one of his favourite spots - ... the Molong Creek to do a bit of fishing.

Like generations of Molong kids before him, Jake loved the creek environs - the simplicity of the cool waters flowing over rocks - the fascinating creek life of

tadpoles, frogs, yabbies, ducks, fish and sometimes, the splash of a platypus or a water rat.

Jake lived for the outdoors surrounding his home where he shared his love of animals of all kinds, shapes and sizes with his mum and dad, Kylie and Clinton and his older brother Cody.

He lived for the fishing and hunting camping trips up north on the Roper River with his dad, Clinton, grandfather Graham and his Uncle Joe. A harsh and vast landscape where he learnt to live safely and at one with the bush and the river. As he did in the paddocks and creek of Molong.

Setting out on a normal Saturday recently with mates, Jake headed to one of his favourite spots on the Molong Creek for a spot of fishing. An accident occurred. Jake did not return home.

He will always be remembered, loved ... and missed.

ake Whiting, son of Kylie Williamson and Clinton Whiting, brother of Cody, mate to many was a Molong kid, born and bred. A Year 5 student at the Molong Central School, the happy 11 year old followed in his family's footsteps with his love of the outdoors.

A couple of Saturday's ago - Jake set off to 'the creek' as he often did - with a couple of mates. Nothing out of the ordinary - but this time Jake did not come home again due to an unfortunate, un-ordinary accident.

His family, mates, school friends and residents are heart broken to lose one of their beautiful sons. Jake's farewell was held at the Molong Rec, overlooking the creek, paddocks and the hills that were his 'home'. Some 500 residents gathered at the service to remember Jake.

what he was told (sometimes), and loved the things that would come out of his mouth that made us all laugh. "Jake was warm and affectionate, he loved to build things. If he had electrical tape he could make anything from wood, steel, plastic.

We used to buy boxes of Arrowroot biscuits for him.

Jake loved to eat them covered in milk. He loved Tim Tams as well and sausages - we made sausages at home.

He loved campfire cooking, playing with his dogs, riding his motorbike - and the skateboard park. Jake bought his own scooter with his own money. It cost him $340. It took him a while to save it up. Jake was saving up to buy a V8 Landcruiser. He collected cans and bottles to sell."

loved being with them all - they would horse-ride, camp, build cubbies, yabby in the dam."

With Clinton's family Jake loved heading north on annual trips to the Roper River where he learnt about the harsh and often dangerous environment where crocs were often seen. Jake learnt about the dangers of the environment from his extended family, including from his grandfather, Graham Whiting. Jake lived a life that most kids in Molong - Sydney and around Australia would have loved ... and indeed yearn for.

"We'll miss his smile, watching him play outside, playing with his dogs especially his Whippet, Marley, who followed Jake everywhere. Marley is still looking for him. He keeps going to Jake's fishing bag and runs into his room looking for him" said Kylie.

Recollections of school years in Molong

By Trevor Bryce Trevor, now of Brisbane, sent us this article. Trevor is a former pupil of Molong Central School, and was in fact, one of the first intake of pupils when the school opened in 1949. He was in fourth class then, and completed Primary education at MCS. (Continued from last Week) One day after lunch, she asked me to stay behind after school because she wanted to talk to me about something. I spent the next ninety minutes wondering what in particular I’d done wrong. I was far from being a perfect child, and there was a wide range of possibilities. But I had needlessly worried. What Mrs Sloane said to me was that I had a special gift for writing and encouraged me to enter one of my essays in the Manildra Eisteddfod essay-writing competitition. I still have the book which was my prize for coming first. It was during this year that a love of writing was instilled in me and has remained with me ever since. Indeed I’m just finishing writing my twentieth book.

My third year class was housed in the Methodist church hall on the hill. I also went to Sunday school there every Sunday afternoon. Unfortunately, my parents were not persuaded by my argument that after already spending five days a week on church premises I’d absorbed anough religion – just by being there – to forego yet a sixth day in the place. That put me in a contrary mood. On the way home from Sunday School, I used to pass by the local Baptist church. The service was always in full swing and you could see and hear it all from the open front door. The service was conducted by a wizened old pastor who spoke thunderously of the temptations of the flesh (I wasn’t too sure what these were at the time) to a congregation of half a dozen or so old ladies – who were either already well and truly converted, or else well beyond the need for redemption.

It all seemed rather comical to me. The church had a pitched corrugated iron roof, and before I continued home I used to throw handfuls of stones on it, which noisily rolled down the troughs in the roof-undulations while I ran for my life.

So I didn’t much benefit from my Sunday School classes.

One episode that happened during this year I recall now with great sadness. Two classes ahead of us was a large boy who was repeatedly beaten for failing his spelling and reading tests. His teacher believed he was just being lazy and defiant, and finally took him to the Deputy Headmaster. This man believed that humiliation might work. So he took the lad around all the younger classes and asked him to write simple words on the blackboard from dictation. He wrote the most bizarre things, to howls of laughter from the younger pupils. Then he was hauled out of the classroom, taken to another for a repeat performance, and then no doubt subjected to further beatings. How that child must have suffered! It was only later in more ‘enlightened’ times that I realised he was acutely dyslexic. But I doubt if any teachers had heard the word at the time, let alone have the knowledge or resources for remedial action.

By the beginning of my fourth school year, the new school in Phillips Street was ready for its first intake of pupils. It was now called Molong Central School, and was generally regarded as a state-of-theart showpiece for NSW education. Our teacher for the year was Mr Rolfe. And our classroom was a whole new world – spacious, well lit, with brand new desks

and chairs (one per student – a hitherto unknown luxury), and an enormous, totally pristine blackboard. Mr Rolfe was called away briefly just after we sat at our desks for the first time, and I was given the task of ‘minding the class’ in his absence.

This was a great privilege, and one of my duties was to write on the board – for the very first time it had ever been used – the name of the best behaved student while the teacher was absent. This turned out to be more of a poisoned chalice than a privilege. Everyone shot up their hands begging me to put their name on the board. The choice I eventually made left me with one grateful friend and twentynine enemies.

One of the ‘state-of-the-art’ features of the new school was a public address system, which enabled the headmaster to address each class from his office, or all classes at the same time. He could also hear what was being said in any or all classrooms by a flick of his switch. This had a distinct Orwellian ‘Big Brother’ feel about it, though of course none of us were yet old enough to have read ‘1984’.

Throughout my time in Molong there was ongoing hostility between the pupils at MCS and the local Catholic School’s aspiring scholars. Generally, this hostility was displayed at a distance, as insults by one school (or rather by its self-appointed adolescent representatives) were hurled at the other. But one day I was walking home with a couple of my friends when we were suddenly confronted by several of the enemy school’s ‘representatives’.

The trading of insults soon gave way to blows, and a fierce fight broke out.

MCS’s headmaster at the time was Denis O’Brien, a huge man. He happened to be driving past while we were slogging it out, stopped his car, recognised his MCS pupils and ordered us to report to his office the next morning for caning. We thought this quite unfair, since all we were doing was upholding the honour of our school. Anyhow, after a night of fearful anticipation, we duly turned up at the headmaster’s office as ordered, and were relieved when he let us off with a warning. He obviously – and quite rightly – concluded that our overnight fear of the impending punishment was in itself punishment enough.

Mr O’Brien was succeeded as headmaster by Mr Thornley – a man of fearsome looks and demeanour. He had a reputation for liberally and vigorously plying the birch. This prompted someone to make up a rhyme about him which we all sang (but not in his hearing): Mr Thornley went to church Every single Sunday. He prayed to god to give him strength To whack the kids on Monday.

Actually, I think his reputation was illdeserved. I don’t recall any pupil suffering corporal punishment from him or that he was any more prone to dishing out punishments than any of his immediate predecessors or successors.

MANILDRA BOWLS On 17 November 2018 the Club fours title was decided, and for the third year in a row the Allcorn team of Tod, Bill, Sam and Ben have claimed the title of fours champions. They had to come from behind to win against Iain Campbell, Sam Pallier, Ned Kurta and Adam Campbell. Well done to all bowlers involved on making the final.

Due to the cold weather we had there was no Friday or Saturday night bowls played this week. We did have two championship games played over the weekend. The first saw Duke Gosper take on Col Dunn in a handicap consistency game, Duke proved to strong on the day and had a good win.

MOLONG GOLF Sunday Morning Golf: Only had 3 players which was a pity because it was a great day for golf.

Not real good golf was played by one A grader and one B grader. Quite a few wayward drives. The B grader wasn't good on putting AND flirted with the limb

Lamb numbers increased this week with agents only yarding 11320 Sheep numbers this week also saw little change with agents yarding 2850 This week saw again a big increase in the yarding of lambs, they were mainly trade weights, heavy lambs were limited and a fair selection of store lambs made up the yarding. There was a reasonable quality of mutton yarded again this week.

Light weight lambs held firm to $4 dearer, while trade lambs were $9 dearer, lambs to restockers or to feed were firm, whilst heavy weights were cheaper by $10 to $15. Mutton saw little change heavy first cross ewes making $110 to $130/head or $4.10kg cwt.

CTLX cattle market report 27/11/18

Numbers decreased slightly again this week for a yarding of 1985 cattle. Again we saw a large supply of cows on offer, with several good lines of heavy weight

grown steers, again a good selection of feeder steers and heifers with only a few pens of restocker types.

Young cattle to the trade were dearer, feeder steers where also 5c to 9c dearer, feeder heifers were 5c cheaper, young cattle to the restocker were 12c to 15c cheaper. Grown steers were 3c cheaper, grown heifers were also 3c cheaper.

Plainer cows were firm to a little dearer, medium and heavy cows were 2c to 3c cheaper, a big yarding of bulls which saw most bull firm.

Well done to Millthorpe on their first win after a couple of close losses they are on the board and may well come home with a wet sail. After a good start to the season Magpies look wobbly and may live to regret letting gun all rounders David Hobbs and Glenn Meehan go, time will tell.

In the second game Country had a convincing win over their grand final nemesis Cudal. Batting first Cudal’s top and middle order collapsed. Only a fine innings of 58 by retired Nationals Scott Barrrett saved them from an embarrassing scorecard.

Batting at 10 Matt Bowden with 19 was the only other batsmen to offer anything as Cudal were all out for 148 in only the 33rd over. S Clayton bolwed much better than the previous week against Magpies taking 3 for 31, but it was John Mulhall taking 3 for 16 who was the best with the ball for Country. In reply Country had little trouble passing Cudal's total with Nigel Brazier leading the way again this time scoring 83 no. Sir Jock Haynes 31 continues his good early season form. Country passing Cudal’s total in the 33rd over 5 wickets down.
