Orange, Cabonne, Blayney to host annual NSW tourism conference

Mayors welcome tourism conference bid win Orange Mayor Reg Kidd has welcomed the decision to award next year’s Local Government NSW Destination and Visitor Economy Conference to the Orange, Blayney and Cabonne region. The annual conference brings together hundreds of people from across the state to plan new directions in tourism.

Cr Kidd said the decision to host the event in Orange came down to strong collaboration between the three councils.

“Tourism staff from Orange, Blayney and Cabonne already work closely together to market the region to visitors,” Cr Kidd said.

“They know how co-operating between neighbouring districts helps to deliver the bounce-back we all need, whether it’s drought, bushfire and now COVID. “We put together a proposal based on a prospective busy, three-day program, with all the visitor highlights that our region has to offer.

It’s a pitch that’s clearly caught the judges’ eye.”

Cr Kidd said next year’s conference program will feature several premier venues and tourism experiences.

“We’ll be setting a date that suits our climate, and now the decision’s been made, planning can begin in earnest.”

Blayney Shire Council Mayor Scott Ferguson said he was pleased his region would have an opportunity to be involved in the conference and showcase everything it had to offer visitors at next year’s event.

“I am confident participants at the conference are going to have a memorable stay and I thank LGNSW for the opportunity to host it,” he said.

Cabonne Council Mayor Kevin Beatty agreed, and said it was a rewarding outcome for the efforts of putting the combined bid in.

“It was a great experience working with Blayney and Orange councils, and I am looking forward to making next year’s conference an event to remember,” he said.

Orange was runner-up in the NSW Top Tourism Town Award, announced at this year’s Conference and visitor numbers were the best in NSW after the COVID travel restrictions we lifted in July last year.

According to data from Tourism Research Australia, our September last year was one of the busiest on record.

An estimated 177,000 visitors stayed in Orange, Blayney and Cabonne for approximately 475,000 nights during that period, up 111% compared to the same period the previous year.

Another side to the removalist’s visit?

The Express doesn’t often reprint transient facebook posts or stories. But this one relating to the now famous removalists visit to Molong recently took our eye. It certainly paints a different picture Make of it what you will. Note: Photo says “With my mum”.

“Let me state that I firmly believe that NO-ONE should knowingly spread Covid.

I've (to my absolute good fortune) had two doses of Pfizer. I am one of the 14%.

I believe in science and by doing the very best we individually and collectively can to minimise the overarching impact of this virus on lives and livelihoods.

But some of the comments I've been seeing on social media about both groups of Sydneybased removalists responsible for transmitting the virus interstate and to regional NSW have been utterly vile.

Things like 'at least they'll have to live the rest of their lives knowing they killed their mother' and so on.

Revolting.

The facts in the second removalists case, which much of the mainstream media seem to be happy to omit in their sensationalist and abstract coverage, are that 27yo twins Roni and Ramsin Shawka are Iraqi and have limited english.

Sydney's current restrictions require ‘essential workers’ from Fairfield, Liverpool and the Canterbury-Bankstown areas to undergo regular tests if they are to leave their LGA. After getting tests under these rules, workers only need to isolate if they have symptoms, something Roni, Ramsin and their two coworkers attest they didn't have.

That said, they complied and went and got tested prior to starting work

at 4am on the day they both had a shift (as third-party contractors, mind you) working for On Time Removals, which required that they drive to Orange.

While in Orange, NSW Health called to inform Roni that he had tested positive to the highly infectious Delta strain of Covid, but his limited english meant he asked the NSW Health worker to contact his boss, Aram Yousif, to relay the message back to him clearly.

Following a discussion with NSW Health, Yousif told Roni he had tested positive and needed to isolate in the cabin of their removal truck, which he did.

It seems that Yousif, their employer, then determined that the other 3 men could still legally complete a final drop off en route back to Sydney, however during that time two of them were also notified they had tested positive, hence the police were sent to escort them all back to ensure they complied with isolation orders.”

Great Western Highway Upgrade From Kelso To Raglan Is Starting To Take Shape

The landscape on the eastern entrance to Bathurst is starting to change, with work on the $45 million Great Western Highway upgrade from Kelso to Raglan now more than six months along.

Member for Bathurst Paul Toole said site establishment and initial work has been completed and the project had moved into the general earthworks phase.

Mr Toole said as well as the visible progress being made, another positive aspect of the project has been the high rate of local contractor engagement.

“The ability to employ local contractors and boost the local economy is something we’re extremely pleased about – a number of local companies have been involved in the project to date, employing over 25 people so far,” Mr Toole said.

“This is on top of the 11 people that Transport for NSW directly employed to work on the project in May this year.”

This most recent activity on the Kelso to Raglan upgrade follows on from work that started in March to

remove the avenue of poplars from the northern side of the highway to make way for a widened road.

A new treescape will be planted in this area at the conclusion of the project in 2023.

The next phase of the project will involve stormwater, kerb and pavement works.

The NSW Government has committed $45 million in funding to upgrade the Great Western Highway between Kelso and Raglan to improve safety and reduce travel time along this section of the highway.

Changed traffic conditions remain in place, with a 60 km/h speed limit alongside barriers from Napoleon Street to Ceramic Avenue.

Council elections pushed back from September to December 2021 as COVID-19 worsens

NSW Minister for Local Government Shelley Hancock on Saturday confirmed the election date had been pushed back from September 4 to December 4 for all NSW councils except Central Coast Council, which is currently in the hands of an administrator.

Independent advocacy organisation Local Government NSW has urged the government to commit to holding "COVID safe" council elections before year's end.

"COVID safe local government elections must be held by the end of the year, to uphold democracy and ensure renewal," LGNSW President Linda Scott said.

After making itself a mega target in 2019, Labor has confirmed it will be a small one in 2022 by promising an Albanese government would keep the 2024 income tax cuts and not disturb negative gearing and capital gains tax.

This decision essentially completes the “de-Shortening” of Labor’s controversial policy pitch. The plan to scrap franking credit cash refunds, which saw a Coalition scare campaign at the last election, was ditched some time ago.

With the Coalition having limited scope to make big promises, and the opposition determined to confine itself to a fairly narrow agenda, the election seems likely to be centrally about the exit from COVID. A special virtual caucus meeting was held on Monday to approve a shadow cabinet decision on the tax measures. Caucus members were only given a few minutes to read the material.

Some in Labor will be unhappy at the decision, especially as the opposition has consistently criticised the tax cuts as favouring people on higher incomes. The decision also means Labor has constrained the amount of money it will have to spend on promises.

But with polls showing Prime Minister Scott Morrison in a trough, Labor has become more optimistic about its election prospects and opposition leader Anthony Albanese is determined to ditch any baggage in pursuit of a win.

A focus on the PM’s COVID response The government will counter with Labor’s past statements on the issues.

At the caucus meeting, shadow Treasurer Jim Chalmers, facing questioning about the likely attitude of Labor party members to the package of tax decisions, said parts of the political spectrum “would not applaud” it. He said it had been an “on balance” decision.

Labor wouldn’t disturb tax cuts, negative gearing in ‘small target’ strategy Albanese emphasised Labor’s unity, contrasting it with disunity in the Liberal party, mentioning Campbell Newman, a former Liberal National Party Queensland premier, quitting the party.

The opposition leader told his troops Labor was “cutting through” with its message that Morrison had two jobs – the vaccine rollout and putting in place an effective quarantine system.

Albanese and Chalmers said in a statement that with its decisions, Labor was providing certainty to working

families.

When it comes to the economy, the next election will be about the prime minister’s dangerous and costly failures to manage the pandemic.

His failures on vaccines and quarantines have caused lockdowns 18 months into this pandemic, and those lockdowns are causing billions of dollars in damage to the economy.

The cost of the stage three tax cuts is about $17 billion in their first year, and $130 billion over ten years. They come in from mid-2024.

Under the changes, the 32.5% tax rate goes down to 30%, and the 37% rate is scrapped. From July 1, 2024, people earning between $45,000 and $200,000 will face a marginal tax rate of 30%.

Chalmers told a news conference:

an Albanese Labor government will deliver the same legislated tax relief for more than nine million Australians who earn $45,000 a year or more as the Morrison government.

As the tax cuts are already legislated, a Labor government would not necessarily have been able to get their repeal through the Senate anyway.

HIA welcomes Labor stance on negative gearing At the last election, Labor proposed removing negative gearing for people who bought existing properties and cutting the capital gains discount from 50% to 25%.

Assistant Treasurer Michael Sukkar said Labor couldn’t be trusted on negative gearing.

In a cynical move that is unashamedly motivated by the pursuit of power, Anthony Albanese is now trying to convince voters that Labor doesn’t want to abolish negative gearing or raise taxes on capital gains.

However, if we are to take the Labor Party at their word, ending negative gearing is an issue that senior Labor figures are deeply committed to.

Sukkar backed up his argument with a bunch of quotes from Labor figures, including Albanese and Chalmers, supporting the old policy.

But the Housing Industry Association welcomed the Labor announcement on negative gearing and capital gains tax, saying it “will provide certainty for the housing industry and for Australians that are looking to invest or rent”.

Albanese also announced Labor would introduce a bill into the Senate “to improve the transparency and accountability of ministerial decisions with grant programs”.

When covid comes to town

Phil Donato, Member for Orange writes on an issue affecting everyone

COVID-19 is the hot topic of the day, and its impact on the world’s society will certainly be remembered in history for generations to come. I acknowledge and accept there are many opinions regarding the virus and our governments’ response to it. Opinions aside, we cannot dispute the sobering facts; COVID-19 is transmissible, its impact on the health of those who contract it can result in symptoms which can last their lifetime, and in some cases it results in death – increasingly likely for those who are aged, infirm or whom suffer some comorbidities.

The scale of COVID-19’s health impact is in direct correlation with the capability the health system, which we’ve observed in other countries.

Our health system is among the best in the world, but the reality is that its capability is finite and it could not cope if inundated with broad spread community infection.

Many in our midst are critical of government for imposing enforceable health orders which temporarily restrict our activities. They’re free to express their opposition, but it must be remembered that it was the failure of a few ignorant individuals to adhere to health orders which eventually led to COVID-19 once again arriving on the doorstep of the Central West.

To avoid its potential spread in the communities of each the Orange, Cabonne and Blayney Local Government areas, the NSW Government, on receipt of health advice, imposed the most minor degree of lockdown for seven days, which commenced last Wednesday.

Fingers crossed, if we get to the end of Tuesday 27th July without any more cases being detected, the stay-at-home direction will likely be lifted and life will resume, and we can get back to doing what we did before COVID came to town.

I share some of the community’s frustrations.

I’ve been critical of the Australian Government’s sluggish rollout of the vaccination program, which is, to a large extent, a factor in the seriousness of health risks to the broader community and the imposition of restrictive health orders. The PM has now accepted responsibility, and now I’ve called on the Government to step-up by opening a vaccination hub in our area and requesting additional supplies of the vaccines.

I respect the decision of those who choose not to receive the vaccine, but the reality is the vaccination of the majority of the population is the necessary key to eventually emerge from restrictive health orders which have had significant economic, social and mental health impacts.

If the Government wishes to avoid opposition and criticisms from the community, there needs to be more transparency and openness around the decisions that are being made and the evidence used in their decision making which impacts our lives and livelihoods.

I want to acknowledge the resilience of the communities here in the Central West. In spite of everything we’ve endured in recent years, be it drought, bushfires, floods, mice plague, COVID-19 and now lock-downs, we’ve always found a way to forge on, just as we’ve always done, by rolling-up our sleeves, sticking solid and getting through these trying times together.

On the whole, the community have done their bit in response to the latest situation; following health advice, staying home except where departures are necessary, wearing facemasks, QR checking-in wherever we go, socially distancing, sanitising and getting COVID tested.

If you visited any of the COVID-19 venues of concern, as detailed in the Government’s gazetted messages, or are feeling unwell, I would urge you to get COVID tested.

These next few days will be critical, so let’s do our part in adhering to the health advice. Also, it’s important we keep an eye out and support each other during this difficult time.

Lastly, a huge shout out to all the people in healthcare, who are under the pump and on the frontline supporting the COVID testing and vaccination - thank you!

May biggest revenue grab on record - Labor

According to new data, the NSW Government decision to remove mobile speed camera warning signs has resulted in $4 million worth of fines issued in NSW for May alone, for low range speeding offences of less than 10km per hour – the highest on record.

Comparatively, in May 2020 there was 1,547 fines issued for speeding 10km/h or less above the speed limit. In May 2021, that figure has sky rocketed to 27,144 fines – a huge 1,655 per cent increase.

And as well as the removal of mobile speed camera warning signs, the NSW Government has deployed multi-directional secret cameras, that have now begun to operate for triple the time.

The NSW Government made the decision to remove warning signs from November 2020. They have now raised $20.2 million in revenue since January 2021 in speeding fines less than 10km/h.

NSW Labor is urging the Government to put an end to the secret cameras and the blatant cash grab, particularly when it is only essential workers on the roads right now.

“We all want our roads safer. But the lack of signage is only slugging people more at a time they can least afford it,” NSW Labor Leader Chris Minns said.

“Is the Transport Minister seriously suggesting moving mobile speed cameras around Sydney is ‘essential work’? It’s a blatant cash grab!

“In May alone the Government collected almost $4 million from

over 25,000 extra fines compared to the same time last year.

“How is this an essential service?

Sydney is in lockdown and we have the Government going out of its way to slug motorists on the road with low range speeding fines.

“The fact of the matter is people slow down when they see proper warning signs – and that makes our roads safe,” Mr Minns said.

Shadow Minister for Roads John Graham said these hidden speed cameras are doing nothing to slow people down and instead are slugging families who are already hurting financially.

“The numbers speak for themselves. The amount of fines issued shows the Government’s decision to remove warning signs have not slowed drivers down.

“If we are serious about making our roads safer and reducing speeding, then the NSW Government needs to reverse its decision to remove the warning signs, because we know warning signs are an important tool to slow people down.

“Warning signs display speed limits for drivers, which acts an alert to check speeds and slow down if they need to.

“Hidden mobile speed camera vehicles are not an essential service and clearly the data is showing they don’t slow drivers down and they don’t make our roads safer," Mr Graham said.

The fine for ‘under 10km’ speeding offences is $123.

Barilaro ‘extremely dissatisfied’ at rejection of council demergers

Deputy Premier John Barilaro states he is deeply dissatisfied at his own federal government’s choice to turn down propositions preferred by regional neighborhoods to divide 2 councils in south-west NSW, combined 5 years back as an outcome of the state’s questionable amalgamation policy.

Local Federal government Minister Shelley Hancock has actually based her choice to decline demerger propositions for the Cootamundra-Gundagai Regional and Snowy Valleys councils on the absence of a clear agreement on the concern in 2 reports by the NSW Boundaries Commission. Here, two locals give their perceptions on the most important issue facing the planet.

Climate Change and Agriculture

I was excited to read the letter in The Express from Dougal Pottie last week in which he described the National Party leader Barnaby Joyce and other Nationals as “non conformists”, which I suppose means that he considers their views on climate change minority. This is illustrative of the step change in public discourse on climate change in recent years, which is exciting. I have been reading about human induced climate change for about twenty years and have never felt that those advocating for action have been in the majority until recently.

Over that period, the Nationals have moved from open mockery of climate science; to acknowledge the climate is changing but protest that we can’t possibly afford to risk changing our economy to do something about it.

The other step change is in the business community, including the farming community, manifest in the popularity of Farmers for Climate Action. The Meat and Livestock Association (MLA) have published targets for net zero emissions and are investing in research to get us there. The National Farmers Federation have also set a target to get agriculture to net zero emissions by 2050. BHP, one of the largest resource companies in the world has announced it is exiting thermal coal mining and has just entered a commitment with the electric car maker TESLA to work together to reduce the emissions released in the process of battery manufacture.

Fortescue Metals Group, which mines iron ore in WA, is spending millions to establish a steel industry based on renewable energy rather than burning coke. These organisations don’t

make decisions based on some green dream; investment decisions are made on the basis of cold hard analysis of the scientific and economic evidence.

The facts are clear. Since the 1990s climate models have been estimating what the effects of global warming might be by the 2020s and they have been accurate. The floods, heatwaves and bushfires in the northern hemisphere this year are again “unprecedented”. The earth is warming at a rate not seen before in ice records.

The predictions for the 2050s are very bad if we carry on business as usual. To avoid what many fear as a catastrophe, society must reduce emissions quickly and massively. For this we need leadership.

Australia faces 3 areas of risk from climate change:1. the risks of floods, fires and heatwaves, 2. the risk from the actions of other nations as they try to change the way their economies work.

The most obvious example is the proposal from the EU and some in the USA to impose tariffs on imports from countries that don’t put a price on green house gas emissions.

3. the risk of missed opportunities from our failure to develop the industries of the 21st century that will grow out of the development of the low emissions economy.

All of these risks apply disproportionately to regional Australia so the Nationals face a choice, continue to protect their funding base or help Australia - especially their regional constituents - launch into the 21st century economy

Rozzi asked me to give her a few of my thoughts on the vexed subject of Climate Change. My take on the issue is that it is an undeniable fact.

The climate is changing and always has, we wouldn’t have had Ice Ages if the climate wasn’t changing. The issue that currently complicates the problem is the speed of change. It is scientifically proven that the earth is in a warming phase and that the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere is increasing at an unsustainable rate. Before the Industrial revolution the amount of CO2 was fairly constant, at about 280 parts per million (ppm) but, the big but, was when we started mining fossil fuels that had stored carbon underground for millions of years, the amount of carbon increased rapidly. In 2019 it was 409.8ppm.

Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas, a gas that absorbs and radiates heat. Warmed by sunlight, Earth’s land and ocean surfaces continuously radiate thermal infrared energy (heat). Unlike oxygen or nitrogen (which make up most of our atmosphere), greenhouse gases absorb that heat and release it gradually over time, like bricks in a fireplace after the fire goes out. But increases in greenhouse gases have tipped the Earth's energy budget out of balance, trapping additional heat and raising average temperature of the Earth The increased greenhouse effect, the warming climate, changes weather patterns in several ways.

One way is to increase the water holding capacity of clouds. The result of this is the increase in destructive rain events, as recently witnessed in several European countries. The warming climate also increases the risk of drought,

as we witnessed in the previous few years and the increased risk of devastating fires as we saw recently in Australia and are now raging in North America. Another effect is the increasing acidity of our oceans, in fact it is said that since the industrial revolution acidity in our oceans has increased by 30%.

This, combined with the melting ice caps at the North and South Poles is causing the oceans to rise to levels not seen before. Try telling someone living in Tuvalu that climate change isn’t real.

Greenhouse gases have a long life–span, so even if efforts to reduce and stabilise future emissions are successful, some impacts from existing greenhouse gases are unavoidable. Another thing to keep in mind is that weather and climate are two completely different things.

I have reproduced the following from The Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Water and Environment. Interesting reading from a government that has constantly refused to set any emission reduction targets or timetables.

“Both maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to rise across the country, resulting in an average increase of between 0.6°C and 1.5°C by 2030. The intensity and incidence of severe weather events are also set to increase over the coming decades. An increase in the number of dry days is also expected across the country.

Unlike today’s ‘never fail digital cameras’ - photos taken on the old Kodak Box Brownies were not able to tell the amateur photographer, instantly, whether the photo taken was a good one or blurry where just a slight (very slight) movement of the hand produced such photos like this of Nancy and Archie Myors and Elsie Kable. When the film was developed (probably by Miss Jaye in her darkroom) who once resided in what is now ‘the Jayes/Wildflower Cafe building in Gidley Street.

Until the film was developed and returned in a bright yellow Kodak wallet. Photos like this black and white one - from the collection of Kate McKenzie - is one of a number currently on display on the ‘Memories of Molong’ facebook site. This photo is of former retailers Nancy and Archie Myors and long-time resident, Elsie Kable who may have worked in the Myors’ Bank Street shop (now Wing Hang Chinese Restaurant building). Archie and the gorgeous Nancy sold all things wonderful in their shop. Including giftware, toys, sporting goods, shiny new bikes of all sizes, trikes, toy pedal cars, plus electrical goods, repairs, bike repairs, and probably a thousand other things. Their window displays attracted both children and adults where they would stand and dream. Local residents will remember when the PYE TV’s arrived in the windows showing test patterns (it was exciting when they changed and another design could be viewed) until Channel 8 (Orange) opened up and ‘modern city style’ programs could be viewed.

Judging by the amount of materials used in the full piece cossies and ... could that have been a 2-piece?? - and the clothing worn by the onlookers - and those cars! Perhaps 1950’s??? Thank you to the Old Orange Crew facebook site (possibly the fastest growing site in Australia) which is well worth taking a look at and/or becoming a member of.

“Back in the late 1950's The Century Theatre in Lords Place as it was named then - was a place we went to nearly every Saturday for a number of years. T his had been discussed way back in the ‘Old Orange Crew’ facebook site - but I thought it worth a revisit. So armed with a 2 shilling piece(florin) I would walk down Fox Ave turn left in Margaret St then turn right into Lords Place and walk the number of blocks to the theatre. If you got there early enough you got in for 1 shilling otherwise 1 shilling and sixpence (a zac).

Now money was worth something then and for six pence you could get enough sugar to enjoy yourself but with a shilling it was a ‘banquet’. Now many will recall the fellas

selling sweets from their trays and many availed themselves of this but many would go to the shop next door. Well the theatre was crowded and the excitement would build. A bell would ring and the room darkened. ‘God Save The Queen played so you stood up until it finished. Yes a different time.

Then it was two serials, three cartoons and one or two films. Always enjoyed the stupidity of the 3 Stooges and you know we as kids knew that if you bonked someone with a hammer or poked someone in the eye, like the Stooges, did it would hurt.

SO we understood that the comical violence was just that.

So after the show you would walk home after a great time.

That was 60 years ago.”

MCS impresses in 2021 “Boss” program

Year 11 Business Studies at Molong Central School for the 5th consecutive year are participating the $20 Boss immersive entrepreneurship program. The program gives each student $20 of start-up capital to create, launch and operate their own venture over 10 weeks finishing on the 22nd July.

Business ventures created by students run in 2021 were varied and the quality of the products produced were the most impressive and creative to date.

Mrs Chisholm, Molong Central School Business Teacher said “This program gives students the opportunity to learn key elements of entrepreneurship and taught how to make money and create social good in a hands-on way.

Students demonstrated creativity and ingenuity with the development of their products”.

Chubby Puppy created by the Vaughn Quelnan, Libby Peschka, and Chantelle Cominksey (Photo Right) specialised in dog food treats. They sold Chicken Liver Dog Treats 100g - $5 with all batches selling out within day. o'omaha run by Leoni Wilson and Chelsea Cominksey (Photo Below Right) created wonderfully scented essential oil candles and colourful bath bombs using a selection of scents including lavender, rosemary and peppermint with prices starting at $3.50. Another first-time product sold by students at the school was by the Sweet Funk.

Hayden Bliss and his business partners, Katie Fulwood and Meg Murray manufactured and packaged customisable car air fresheners with customers selecting their scent and design.

“I was pretty nervous when I was told I would have to make and sell a product, but once we got started it was fun and I am really pleased with what Chubby Puppy has achieved as our product looks professional” said Chantelle Cominksey.

Two other business K&C Cupcakes (Kiah Masord & Khia Corey Woods) and Cookie Crunch ( Kylah Fuller, Claire Neville and Will Thorne) sold gourmet cupcakes and biscuits have been keeping the sweet tooths of Cabonne

satisfied.

Businesses that make a profit are required to repay the original $20 of start-up capital, plus an additional $1 'Legacy Donation' back to the school at the conclusion of the program to keep the program sustainable. The businesses donate 50% of their profits to a charity of their choice.

Charities this year the students have nominated include the RSPCA , World Animal Protection, Australian Road Safety Foundation and Black Dog The Black Dog Institute.

This follows on from the legacy when a Moo Poo by Katelan Philpott, Mercedes Oste and Henrietta Pottie were finalist for the 2019 Unleashed Awards held in Melbourne and they won $500.

These impacts will increase production risks for agriculture, such as: • shifts in the extent and severity of pest and disease outbreaks • reduced predictability of seasons • plant and animal heat stress • crop and livestock losses from flood and drought • changes in regional suitability of certain production systems.

Adapting agriculture to climate change will help to reduce the negative effects of these production risks, ensuring the sustainable future of Australia’s agriculture.

Managing heat stress in livestock Climate change is expected to increase the number of days each year that livestock experience heat stress. Animals with heat stress have a reduced appetite and are less likely to breed, resulting in possible productivity losses for the $19 billion livestock industry.”

So, what does all this mean for farmers? My thoughts are that we need to start seriously thinking about how we manage our land.

All farmers are really ‘solar energy farmers’ Solar energy makes plants grow, plants make animals grow, animals grow a farmers viability.

The way animals are managed has a significant impact on soil function and soil and plant function has a real impact on the carbon cycle.

It is vitally important to maintain adequate leaf area on plants so that photosynthesis can occur, so the tried and true one third eaten, one third left and one third trampled management technique works perfectly well. It is true that sheep and cattle do produce Methane.

Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas that traps heat much more than carbon dioxide, but the fact is that it is short lived. It only hangs around

for 10-12 years after which time it is broken down into carbon dioxide and water. Farming in ways that enhances soil biological activity would improve the capacity of soil to act as a methane and carbon sink.

Soils with higher levels of carbon improve farm productivity in several ways, one of which is having a higher water holding capacity, and another by sequestering more carbon they help reduce the harmful effects of carbon in the atmosphere.

A recent Carbon Accounting workshop that I was involved with uses complex spreadsheets and metrics to analyse the carbon footprint on individual farms.

While it showed that it is a slow and painful exercise to increase soil carbon, emissions can be easily offset by well-planned management procedures. These include planting trees in marginal areas that don’t affect productivity, fencing areas to allow natural revegetation to occur and managing stock to improve productivity per head while reducing external inputs. All of these measures are low cost and can go a long way in mitigating CO2 produced in animal production systems.

Therefore, in conclusion, I would suggest that agriculture and more specifically grazing, can be a part of the solution rather than part of the problem. Agriculture in Australia contributes about 13% of our total emissions. This can be reduced.

The MLA, the red-meat sector, has a Carbon Neutral target by 2030 (CN30), the National Farmers Federation has a net zero emissions target by 2050 and JB Swift, the meat huge processor, plans to be net zero by 2040. These are all significant players in Australian agriculture who have committed to targets to reduce carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases.

Stay-at-home order to expire

Member for Orange Philip Donato MP today, Tuesday 27th July 2021, expressed his appreciation to the community for their patience and cooperation in response to the sudden and unexpected stay-at-home health order issued by the NSW Health Minister in response to a positive local COVID-19 case a week ago.

“I’m pleased to confirm that the current stay-at-home order for the communities of each the Orange, Blayney and Cabonne Local Government Areas will cease at midnight tonight,” said Mr Donato.

“The sudden and unexpected health order, which was imposed by the NSW Government in response to the locally acquired Deltra-strain COVID-19 incident, without warning impacted our day-to-day lives here in the Central West.

“This precautionary measure was to prevent our country communities from experiencing the situation we’ve seen unfold in Sydney, where a delayed and passive response to an initial breakout of Delta is still yet to be harnessed five weeks into the State capital’s health crisis.

“I want to congratulate the communities of each the Orange, Cabonne and Blayney Local Government areas for cooperating with the health order, and I wish to extend my appreciation for their patience and understanding.

“I realise many local businesses and workers have suffered a financial impact, though that impact may have been more substantial if COVID were to spread, such as we’ve seen in Sydney.

“The past week has been disruptive to our lives, but the most minor-level lock-down was at the time a reasonable step to take so as to avoid the potential for an outbreak which our local health services may have struggled to cope with.

“10,000 plus local COVID tests have been undertaken, in addition to the sewerage testing, which have all returned negative tests.

“I would also like to thank those essential workers who kept the lights on, and all those who facilitated the COVID testing sites and subsequent pathology testing.

“While we may have evaded a local outbrerak on this occasion, it’s important we not become complacent, and maintain our proactive regime of QR check-ins, social distancing, wearing masks and sanitising.

“Let’s get back to pre-lock-down life, in what is easily the best place in our state to live,” Mr Donato said.

Molong Golf Sunday Mixed

Gerard reports No organised golf at Royal Molong golf course on Sunday but I heard four intrepid (read silly ) members turned up in case the weather fined up and they could have a game playing under Covid-19 conditions where players could play in pairs only and keep 1.5 metres apart.

Stubba reckons the only way to know when the golf course is too wet is when your cart collapses while actually out trying to play the game.

I’m sure Bro was disappointed that the current Covid-19 restrictions and the weather prevented him from putting his coaching guru hat

on and teaching all the new players the art of playing golf and displaying his own inimitable talent. It has been noticed that there are motor vehicle tyre tracks on some of the fairways. This causes damage to the fairways and more so when they are so wet as they are now.

Please do not drive vehicles on the fairways.

Did you know that golf is ideal for people who don’t get enough frustration during the week and golf is also good for the soul because you get so mad at yourself you forget to hate everything else.

Golf on again this Sunday (hopefully), 8.30am for 9am.

Paul Glynn (Molong & surrounding districts) – 0428 168 638 CTLX CATTLE 27 July It was a plainer quality yarding with not the numbers of ideal feeders compared to previous sales, though there were still a few pens of well finished vealers to suit the trade. There were very few grown steers and heifers but there were fair numbers of weaners to suit the restockers. There were 240 mostly prime heavy weight cows yarded. Not all the usual buyers were operating, with some feeder buyers unable to start due to lack of numbers.

Young cattle to the trade were 3c to 7c dearer with prime steer vealers selling from 500c to 550c, while the prime heifer vealers sold from 520c to 548c/kg. Prime yearlings sold from 440c to 508c/kg. Feeder steers and heifers were cheaper on quality, with the feeder steers selling from 450c to 552c, while the feeder heifers sold from 400c to 505c/kg. The better numbers of young cattle to suit the restockers were considerably dearer, with the young steers selling from 548c to 712c, while the young restocker heifers sold from 516c to 642c/kg.

The few grown steers and heifers were dearer with the prime grown steers selling to 490c/kg.

The prime grown heifers sold to 460c/kg. Cows were 4c dearer with the 2 and 3 scores selling from 240c to 357c/kg. Prime heavy weight cows sold from 350c to 399c to average 382c/kg.

Bulls were dearer selling to 310c/kg.

CTLX SHEEP 21 JULY With some cold wet weather numbers were down on the expected draw. It was a plainer quality yarding with not the numbers of extra heavy weight lambs compared to previous sales and a number of the lambs are showing the effects of the cold conditions. There was a pretty good selection of trade lambs yarded. A full field of buyers were operating in a strong market.

Trade lambs were firm to $5 dearer selling from $141 to $240/head to average between 930c and 965c/kg cwt. A couple of pens of trade weight new season lambs sold for $228 and $238/head. Heavy weight lambs were $4 to $7 dearer with the over 24kg lambs selling from $220 to $274/head to average between 860c and 915c/kg cwt. A couple of pens of trade weight Merino lambs sold for $152 and $174/ head. Restocker lambs were also dearer selling from $130 to $163/head. Hoggets sold to $235/ head.

Crossbred ewes made up the majority in a yarding of 870 mutton where most grades were fully firm. Merino ewes sold from $90 to $190 while the crossbred ewes sold from $156 to $235/head. A couple of pens of Merino wethers sold for $122 and $166/head.
