Happy Father's Day to All Dads "We love you Dad".

That's the message from this happy little group of pre-schoolers at the Molong Early Learning Centre who have been keeping busy painting and making special things for their dads, grandads, uncles and special friends for Father's Day. This year, these farming kids Jock, Maisie, Henry and Bill are sending out an extra special message to farming/ grazier Dads who they see working hard feeding out, making tough stock and cropping decisions, worrying about lack of water, farm and business income during this long drought. "It will rain" is the inspirational message from these young ones. It will.

Cabonne Acquisitive Art Prize to launch Cabonne artists, including primary and high school students, will have a chance to share in $6,000 cash prizes in the inaugural Cabonne Acquisitive Art Prize to be launched on September 5.

Cabonne Council, which is sponsoring and conducting the event, will acquire the winning entry for $4,250.

In addition there will be a $500 Local Art Prize High School Section and a $250 Local Art Prize Primary School Section.

The Cabonne Acquisitive Art Prize (CAAP) is an annual painting prize and exhibition that aims to increase opportunities for participation in Cabonne’s arts and cultural program.

It aims to foster a sense of identity, pride and place in Cabonne through a community event and enable the

acquisition of exceptional artworks for the Cabonne Council Art and Heritage Collection (to be established).

Entries will be placed on exhibition in March 2020 and there will be a People’s Choice Prize of $1,000.

A small working group, consisting of Clrs Libby Oldham and Peter Batten, as well as Regional Development Australia Central West Chair Christine Weston, has been formed to administer and operate the Art Prize with the support of Council’s Economic Development and Tourism section.

The competition will be launched on 5 September 2019 with applications closing on 24 January 2020.

Works are to be submitted between 3-7 February 2020.

has attended a school in the LGA. In keeping with the decision to engage industry professionals as independent judges, Mr Brad Hammond, the Director of the Orange Regional Art Gallery, has been enlisted to judge the acquisitive prize. Other industry professionals may be used to judge the high school and primary school works.

The working group has proposed staging the inaugural art prize at the Molong Community Hall.

Entries must be paintings that are available for acquisition by Cabonne Council in exchange for the prize amount of $4,250.

Cabonne Daroo Awards voting to close on August 31

The Canowindra News reports Canowindra residents are being encouraged to have their say in this year’s Cabonne Daroo Business Awards before voting closes at the end of the week.

Voting is set to close on August 31.

More than 200 Cabonne businesses were nominated by their customers and clients for the 2019 awards.

A record 1000 individual nominations were received, which awards chairperson Libby Oldham described as “phenomenal”.

Mrs Oldham said the number of businesses, community organisations and individuals to receive nomination rose by an 66 per cent.

“A record 33 groups were also nominated in the category for Contribution to Cabonne by a Community Organisation,” Mrs Oldham said.

Drought affects bees’ ability to pollinate as species not flowering properly

As farmers across NSW battle through a severe drought, beekeepers are also finding it difficult.

The Blayney Chronicle reports Georges Plains beekeeper George Hancock, who is also president of the Bathurst branch of the Amateur Beekeepers Association NSW, has 10 hives on his property, with roughly 20,000 bees in each hive.

He’s able to provide for his bees with his own lavender farm.

But some beekeepers aren’t as lucky, with some having to rely on their bees pollinating native species in their local area.

And with those species not flowering properly because of a lack of water, it affects the bees’ quality of life.

“Bees are under stress because your native species are not flowering properly,” he said.

“What happens there, the bees start to starve and the hives’ numbers start to fall.”

He said many beekeepers have been forced to use sugar syrups to keep their bees alive, however, the syrup does not produce quality honey.

Dog attack: Lambs mauled during early morning attack

A SAVAGE early morning dog attack has left three lambs with extensive injuries and a hobby farmer worrying about the days to come.

The Blayney Chronicle reports the attack came just one day after NSW Police rural crime officers issued a stern warning to dog owners that the offending animal could

be seized or destroyed if caught.

Paul Cox lives on a hobby farm on the outskirts of Orange and his small flock of sheep have been victim to two dog attacks within the past fortnight.

Mr Cox has lived in the Ammerdown Estate, northwest of Orange, for the past 25 years and this is the fourth dog attack during this time.

Firefighters scrambling in drought conditions as blazes burn out of control

TWENTY out-of-control fires during the past fortnight have left NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) firefighters calling for the public to take care in the very dry conditions.

Winter may be a time when many landowners conduct burn-offs, but the ongoing drought and gusty winds have seen many fires quickly get out of control.

The Western Advocate reports on Tuesday a pile burn escaped containment lines at Wiagdon north of Bathurst and on Sunday a spark from a lawnmower ignited a grass fire in Eglinton.

At Glen Alice on Saturday a campfire that was not extinguished properly reignited and spread leaving firefighters scrambling to get the 47 hectare blaze under control.

“We usually don’t get these type of fires starting until December, January, February,” NSW RFS Chifley/ Lithgow Team operational officer Brett Taylor said.

“Even in the low temperatures now it doesn’t take much for it [the fire] to go off.”

THROUGHOUT September, Bathurst will be celebrating and supporting the role of local businesses within the community.

It is all part of BizMonth, an annual initiative that has continued to grow since the original concept launched in 2015.

“The initiative celebrates the success of our local businesses with each one providing a valuable contribution to the region’s economy,” mayor Graeme Hanger said.

“It started in 2015 as BizWeek and in 2017 was rebranded to BizMonth.”

A variety of events have been arranged, including a seminar on customer service

by CenWest Innovate, the Bathurst Rotary Corporate Duck Race and the Western Advocate’s annual Crazy Day promotion.

“The business lunch has been very popular in the past with over 200 attendees,” Cr Hanger said.

“The event has been successful due to the quality and calibre of speakers that have presented at the lunch.

These have varied over the years and all provide great insights into improving your business.”

This year’s speaker will be Ita Buttrose.

Forbes’ own lawn mower racing champions bring their sport home

Forbes has a couple of the country’s fastest mowers.

The Forbes Advocate reports Forbes locals have ranked third and fifth in this year’s Australian Ride On Lawn Mower Racing titles in Shepparton.

Craig Bratton claimed third in A Grade at the national titles on his ride-on, which has a fuel-injected CBR 300 engine in it.

David Teale was not far behind in fifth on his modified Greenfield 30 inch cut, with a two-stroke 250cc motor.

Bratton, Teale and Craig Bourke have been racing together for a couple of years now, they heard about the sport and joined the Australian Ride-On Lawn Mower Racing Association.

Now they’re bringing mower racing to this district, with a series across the district’s shows.

The series got underway at the Parkes shire shows, the locals have been racing at Parkes for two years now, and continued with a demonstration at Bedgerabong Show.

Craig Bourke took out the Bedgerabong leg of the series, which will conclude at Cowra Show in October.

Parkes Shire Arts Advisory Council hosts workshop to develop arts and cultural vision for Parkes.

A group of arts enthusiasts from Parkes is on a mission to develop a vision and plan for the arts and cultural development within our shire.

The Parkes Champion Post reports the group - now known officially as the Parkes Shire Arts Advisory Council - is calling on all visual artists such as painters, potters, designers, photographers; crafts people; performance artists such as actors, dancers and singers; literary artists such as poets and writers; and film and digital artists, to join them in a special workshop this week.

Parkes’ Cultural, Education and Library Services Manager Kerryn Jones saidthe workshop aims to gather input from all those interested across the shire, who would like to add their voice and help develop this vision and plan for arts and cultural development.

“We want to hear the voices of all artists, creators and performers so that the plan truly represents the diverse range of artistic and creative interests, experience and talents that exist,” Ms Jones said.

“We will also be compiling an arts calendar of events, activities and exhibitions to make sure the community is informed on what is happening across the shire.”

In May the Parkes Shire Arts Council was officially adopted as a committee of the Parkes Shire Council and features artists from the visual and performing arts, as well as representatives from council.

Council to limit bids to Stronger Country Council’s Assistance program to Communities Fund support local events grants to give local NSW Disc Golf Championship community groups a go Cabonne Council

The NSW Open is the peak Disc Golf event held in NSW during 2019 with the Central West Disc Golf Club being been granted the hosting rights for this event to be held in Molong.

The event will be held over the October long weekend and plans to participate under the theme of PINK to support the Molong ‘Pink Up Markets’ with the week long PINK activities organised by Molong Advancement Group to support Breast Cancer Awareness.

The players will be travelling from interstate and staying in and around Molong and boosting the local economy. To date players are registered from Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia, Queensland, ACT and throughout NSW. The event organisers are planning for 70 competitors plus supporting families and spectators.

Disc Golf is a highly skilled sport that attracts

strong spectator interest.

This is the first time the NSW Disc Golf Championship has been held. Council has donated $500 to assist the event.

Regional Vignerons Association 2019 Wine Festival Cabonne Council has approximately 80% of the district’s wine growers, cellar doors and vineyards located in the shire.

The area now boasts 70 vineyards with 40 cellar doors operating in the region.

Of these cellar doors 25 are located in Cabonne shire.

The Orange Wine Festival is the only major consumer and industry specific wine event in the Orange region that showcase cool climate wines.

Orange Wine Festival helps to build awareness of the region, it attracts numerous new visitors and builds community pride in our assets and attractions in the area.

2019 Orange Wine Festival is one of four major events in the region that showcase the region’s renowned food and wine and attracts strong visitor numbers and interest in the area.

The Orange Wine Festival has been held annually since 2005. In its current format the event is held over 10 days with over 80 events and activities that highlight the region’s wines through various wine shows, tastings, educational workshops, cellar doors, restaurants and various celebrations with local produce and

talent.

Cabonne will benefit from raised awareness of the region and enhancement of the Cabonne profile of our producers and vignerons that will build on previous marketing campaigns like Discover the Riches villages campaign Signature events will be complemented by a diverse program run by local producers and restaurateurs throughout Cabonne.

Council has donated $5000 to this flagship event.

Molong Advancement Group’s ‘PINK Up’ Molong weekend The Molong Advancement Group have registered with the McGrath Foundation to raise funds to provide more Breast Care Nurses.

All Molong business houses have been invited to participate in ‘PINK UP’ Molong to decorate their shop fronts and add pink wherever possible to support the theme.

The Molong Markets will be held on 7 October (long weekend Monday) and will go PINK along with the Central West Disc Golf who are taking part in the PINK theme as well for their event.

Molong Advancement Group aim to attract increased visitation to the town, raise awareness of Molong as an attractive destination and increase patronage to the local businesses. Based on previous Molong Markets MAG expects to attract between 5,000 to 7,000 people and

Cabonne Coumcil will initially restrict its bids under round 3 of the NSW Government’s Stronger Country Communities Fund as for the first time community groups, not-for-profits and organisations that have a public purpose will be able to apply for funding.

Round 3 will provide an additional $100 million for community projects in regional NSW with at least $50 million for youth-related projects.

As per the two previous rounds of the Stronger Country Communities Fund, each NSW LGA has been assigned an available amount of funding for their area. In the current funding round, the Cabonne LGA has been allocated $809,274 half of which must be dedicated to youth projects and/or youth-based infrastructure.

Unlike previous rounds - where Councils were the only eligible applicants - this round has been opened to accept applications from not-for-profit groups and other public purpose organisations as well. In light of this change, it would be considered appropriate to keep projects nominated by Council to a smaller number for up to approximately half the allocation value so as to allow ample opportunity for success to Cabonne community groups applying directly.

Under the guidelines, projects must seek funding of $50,000 or more. While organisations are not required to provide a matching

contribution, co-contributions are likely to enhance the potential of applications being successful.

The objectives of this round of funding are: 1. To boost the liveability of communities in regional areas by providing new or upgraded social and sporting infrastructure or community programs that have strong local support 2. To provide programs and infrastructure that enhance opportunities for young people to be work ready and thrive in regional NSW Projects must be “shovel ready” and priority will be given to those projects that demonstrate they will be finished on time within the budget.

Councils and community groups must demonstrate they have consulted with their local communities and have the support of their community.

Proposals must also address the issue of ongoing maintenance and associated costs to ensure they are not a burden on the community in the future.

At this stage the Council is proposing to nominate lighting upgrades at Dr Andrew Ross Memorial Recreation Ground ‘The Rec’, Molong and at Tom Clyburn Oval, Canowindra.

Molong Probus Club At our meeting this month we had a Musical Interlude which was very well attended and we were entertained by some wonderful musicians, Simply Ukes from the Conservatorium in Orange and our own Geoff Tonkin and Meg Oliver.

The Molong Advancement Group sends a big thank you to the 395 people who took the time to respond to the Survey both on line and print media regarding the trees in Bank Street Molong .

The result revealed 198 yes to remove the trees and 197 not to remove them thus proving to be an insignificant outcome.

Therefore Molong Advancement Group will pass on to Cabonne Council all comments received from the survey for their consideration.

The Express understands that the

Council is unlikely to rush into any action.

If anything, Council will likely seek advice from its own staff and possibly an independant professional arborist.

It is also possible that the Council will cost out the hours taken to daily clean up the seed pods over the months they occur and seek legal advice on its liability to anyone injuring themselves because of them.

Long term impacts of root protrusion might also be considered.

Melbourne Cup on the way to Yeoval

Each year, the Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour celebrates the heroes and stories intrinsically linked to the Victoria Racing Club’s 158-year old Lexus Melbourne Cup race and its contribution to the nation’s historical and cultural heritage. The 18-carat gold Lexus Melbourne Cup trophy visits various destinations in an effort to unite communities by engaging councils, schools, hospitals, aged-care homes and racing groups in events to raise funds for local causes.

The Lexus Melbourne Cup National Sweep will see 24 rural and regional Cup Tour destinations be allocated a barrier for the Lexus Melbourne Cup. Barriers will be selected at random when the Cup visits towns, under the supervision of the Cup Tour Team.

That moment will be recorded and shared by the Melbourne Cup Carnival broadcast partner Network 10.

A representative from each of the 24 towns will then be invited to Flemington for the Melbourne Cup Carnival, where they will attend AAMI Victoria Derby Day and the Lexus Melbourne Cup Barrier Draw. At the barrier draw, the representatives will be present to witness which horse will compete for their town once the barrier is selected by the Cup field owners. The community will receive a cash prize of $50,000 to go towards a chosen charity for a local community initiative.

The Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour will arrive in Yeoval on Monday 14 October 2019.

It will visit Yeoval Central School assembly, St Columba’s UPA Aged Care and various other locations in Yeoval before a gala community luncheon at the More Than a Poet Banjo Paterson museum.

There’s a reminder around, today, that takes my thinking back to Lindy Chamberlain, Ayers Rock and little baby Azaria.

The Australian communities were divided with their judgment of “did she - or didn’t she” or was it a Dingo that snatched her little baby.

Not only the Australian communities but the judicial system and processes - what was believable - what was not. The mainstream media decided Lindy Chamberlain was guilty and had what we call a “field day” filling the curious minds of readers, and adding to the community judgment processes.

Adding to this was the persecution of a Christian woman, her Pastor husband and their two little boys who somehow survived the tragedy, their mother being jailed - their new little sister being born in jail - the loss of their mum to the ‘system’ back then - and finally, the return of their mum who was eventually found ‘not guilty’ after many years of appeals - and the ‘guilty’ verdict as played out by the mainstream media.

It was not a good time - and even today, when Lindy Chamberlain’s name is raised ... people in the street, sitting at bars and coffee lounges will bring forth their judgments.

Switch those dimmed lights to today and take a good look at the Cardinal George Pell case. Could this be a re-emergence of the time, back then? Let’s hope not!

I’m not of the Catholic faith ... I have been appalled by the sexual/physical abuse trials that have been going through the courts about life in Catholic churches, schools and other religions - orphanages, homes, in detention etc. ... as well as in family homes across the country.

These are horrendous, unthinkable, dreadful crimes and if evidence before the court is able to prove that these crimes did happen - then let the courts decide on the outcome.

However, the evidence against George Pell, to date, must be questioned - this would be fair to allow this to happen.

Last week, the Victorian Appeals Court made a decision 2-1 to reject Cardinal George Pell’s appeal to progress to the High Court the highest court in the land.

It is shameful that for many years, the Catholic Church covered up the sexual abuse acts as reported in more recent times in the courts. But taking sex abuse claims seriously and thinking always of the victims doesn’t mean that every complaint is true, or that there should be a different standard of proof when someone is accusing a Catholic priest of a sexual crime.” True!

Which raises the question - is the Cardinal George Pell case about bringing to some kind of justice the Pope, the Catholic Church, the Churches, the Organisations, the Homes, Pedophilia, the Gay communities, Christianity? The mainstream media are certainly persecuting the man - as are many a community of people.

What we need to be considering is the life and future of the alleged victim and the deceased alleged victim, and the evidence to date which has not been proven - and certainly, in fairness, incredibly confusing.

This case needs to be heard by the High Court of Australia.

Yeoval will be one of only five regional towns in NSW to host the tour, which will also visit the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Singapore, China and Japan.

Molong Bulls

"When we first starting talking about the prospects of restarting senior Rugby League again in Molong, we were unsure if we would have the players to do so, and not in our wildest dreams could we have imagined that we would finish the competition as third on the ladder.

Last weekend, although beaten by a better side on the day, was a hard fought battle, with 7 of our regular first graders out due to injury and other reasons. However, the players that stepped up, did an admirable job, with many playing in positions that they had never played in before. I take my hat off to them and everyone that kept turning up each week, some playing with injuries, just to keep up our numbers.

2019 saw the return of Molong’s rugby League team, the Molong Bulls after six years in the wilderness. Under the guidance of President Jen Barrow and her dedicated committee the club aims to be a ‘family club” and it has paid dividends.

Todd Barrow (Coach) together with brother Jye lead a team that garnered the support of Molongites, who turned up to the matches in great numbers. We were not disappointed - the team placing 3rd in a tough Woodbridge cup competition in its first year back.

Our juniors and ladies league tag, also had great seasons and improved out of sight each week. I'm sure they will only go on to bigger and better things each season.

We could not have done it without our wonderful, yet small committee of eight. A special mention to the ladies in this group, Kaylene, Bree, Rachael, Debbie and Jo, affectionately known as the pink ribbon brigade, who went above and beyond their job descriptions to get things done.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved with our club; coaches, managers, volunteers, sponsors and every single person who got behind the Bulls in our first year back.

KYSL, Molong Meditation Centre, is proud to introduce a senior lecturer, healer and administrator from Rumtek Monsatery who has been teaching approximately 50 students while visiting the Central West .

(Who?) His Eminence Dekhung Gyaltsey Tulku Rinpoche is a suprisingly humble, compassionate and down to earth yet experienced Monk and teacher of thousands of Buddhist students. Rinpoche will share his profound and compassionate knowledge for how individuals can best cope with life's stresses, as well as discussing what it is to be a Buddhist and how they practice and live their daily lives.

Rinpoche is also a senior lecturer and administrator at Rumtek, a Kagyu School of Tibetan Buddhist Monastery in Sikkim, India where he is also involved in the training of monks. In Sikkim he is also a highly respected and skilled healer. He travels the world giving teaching to his numerous students and visiting his Buddhist centres of which he is a director.

Rinpoche has recently opened an Aged Care Facility in Sikkim running on solar power and also oversees Freedom Facility, a centre for those recovering from alcohol and drug addictions, domestic violence victims and homeless children.

Molong's St. John Cadets recognised at Government House Molong's St. John Cadets are no strangers to Government House where they often attend to receive notable awards from the Governor of NSW. Recently, it was an event for the local leaders to be further recognised.

Molong and district can be proud of this wonderful team who, whilst they no longer have family members involved, they spend their weekends, week nights, holidays training, attending camps/events, providing First Aid at local events, and most of all - building future community leaders.

Congratulations to Julie Dean (above) Superintendent of Molong St. John Cadets who started the group in 1995 and has remained in the role today. Challenged by health problems - Julie with the support of husband Les continues her role today - motivated by her belief in the cadets, local kids and families and the future of Molong and district.

Farmers facing the realities of the climate crisis Anyone who follows world events – and the actions and words of many of its so-called “leaders” – could be forgiven for thinking that the world is spiralling downwards into a state of collective lunacy.

A President claims the world’s largest rainforest is being cleared and burned by organisations seeking government aid; another believes he is the “chosen one” and has scuttled

Yet another believes the best way to national prosperity is to leave an alliance that has helped bring a lasting peace to Europe for the first time in centuries; and meanwhile our Deputy Prime Minister claims that South Pacific Islanders – whose ancestors’ enslavement helped build the Queensland sugar industry – will survive rising sea levels brought on by global heating because they can come to Australia to pick our fruit.

And none of them seems prepared to act on the global crisis we are facing.

Despite this, there are many who are taking direct action, doing their bit to plan for what is an uncertain future and working to mitigate some of the effects of a changing world climate.

Farmers all over the world are part of this movement and the Australian group, Farmers for Climate Change (FCA) is among them, working to alert Australian farmers, politicians and the general public about the need for meaningful action.

In their 2018 Annual Report, FCA points out that farmers are on the front line of climate change, and shifting the farm sector to become more sustainable and climate resilient is one of the top priorities.

The report notes that across FCA’s broad supporter base, there is a diverse range of experiences in and views on – the best approaches to sustainably increase production while maintaining ecosystems and strengthen capacity for adaptation to climate change and at the same

CTLX sheep and lamb report for 21/8/19

AGENTS YARDED 2650 LAMBS AND 1600 SHEEP Numbers declined and quality was varied throughout, with the new season lambs showing good condition with 400 offered.

The old heavy grades were well presented, while the remainder tended to lack finish.

There were mainly trade weights penned, alongside a few heavy lambs and lighter lines. Not all buyers were present and competing in a dearer market.

Light lambs to the processors averaged $132, while the trade weight lambs were firm to $5/head dearer. The better heavy old trade weight 22-24kg lambs sold from $161 to $200/head. Heavy weight old lambs were dearer and averaged 820c/kg cwt, with a couple of pens selling from $210 to $215/ head. New season trade weight lambs were stronger and averaged 880c/kg cwt, with the 23-24kg selling from $198 to $216/head.

Mutton numbers eased and quality was mixed, with medium weight mutton selling from $5 to $7/head dearer, while heavy first cross ewes were dearer. Medium Merino ewes sold from $110 to $156/head, or from 540c to 580c/kg cwt. Heavy first cross ewes made from $158 to $180/head, or from 545c to 630c/kg cwt.

AGENTS YARDED 1926 Numbers were similar and the quality was back slightly with an increase in lighter secondary cattle. There still was a very good run of cattle suitable for the trade and plenty of well weighted feeder cattle. Grown steers were limited and there were not as many prime grown heifers with weight. Around 220 cows were penned to the usual orders.

Young cattle sold to a firm to a cheaper trend and heavy cows were stronger.

The young cattle to restock were 20c cheaper with the plainer quality a major factor. Medium weight feeder steers were 3c cheaper, the heavy weights were close to firm, Heifer feeders slipped 3c. Trade steers sold from 307c to 320c, back 10c and the heifers sold from 300c to 316c, back 19c/kg on the heavy weights.

Grown steers were firm 300c to 330c and the prime grown heifers fell 25c reaching 307c/kg. The 2 score medium weight cows were 4c cheaper on average from 180c to 228c while the heavy cows sold 9c stronger from 236c to 276c/kg. Prime heavy weights averaged 270c and the best of the heavy bulls reached 277c/kg.

Manildra Rhinos travelled to Condobolin last Sunday to take on the favourites, Trundle Bombers.

After the Rhinos posted first points it was Trundle who romped home.

MOLONG GOLF Last Wednesday 8 Molong ladies travelled over to Manildra for our group day, it was a bit windy but everyone still had an enjoyable day.

The winners were Sandi, Margaret and Virginia - well done with a nett 38. Two teams managed birdies on the 3rd hole, rather exciting. Next Wednesday 4th September we will be playing an 18 hole stableford, 8.30 for 9.00 tee off.

On Monday 2nd we are hosting the Veterans Tournament, and will be supplying morning tea and lunch. ***************** Molong has its Open Tournament last Sunday. There were many categories you could do well in such as A grade scratch winner, Justin Oates, Runner up Bruce Reynolds.
