As the sun rose in the east the community of Obley came together to remember the 13 young men and women who served in the Great War (19141918) and those who committed their lives to following Australian wartime involvement. Thoughtfully positioned, the cenotaph and the Lone Pine stand together capturing the first light of day in a memorable embrace.

Molong's RSL Sub Branch members and the Catafalque Party who accompanied them at Sunday's 11 a.m. Anzac Day service. Some 300+ red handmade poppies knitted and crocheted by local women are displayed in the foreground. At the back - are two new flagpoles recently added to Molong's ANZAC memorial.

Obley remembers those who served “He sleeps beside his comrades, In a hallowed grave unknown, But his name is written in letters of love, In the hearts he left at home.

“May the heavenly wind blow softly, O’er the sweet and hallowed spot.

“Though the sea divide his grave from us, He will never be forgot.”

Remembering their son and brother, William Harold Hendrick of ‘Happy Valley’, Obley who departed for overseas service in 1915. “We remember our fallen soldiers at dawn because this was the time when many of the returned soldiers appreciated the comradeship that came with the quiet and peaceful mornings.

When they felt united before the fighting began.

We are proud that some of our own locals were part of the RAAF during World War 2.

They had no experience with aircraft and had to learn everything as they went. Their brave and determined spirits contributed to the lasting positive impact that the RAAF has had.

Alec Saint-Smith of Yullundry: Two local RAAF personnel who did not return from the Second World War had been teachers in small local schools. One was Bede Northmore from Walmer - the other was Alec Saint-Smith from Yullundry. We would like to focus on Alec's remarkable story, one of luck, but unfortunately not all good luck.

We can’t be sure whether he considered himself lucky, as a Sydney boy, to be posted to Yullundry in the middle of nowhere. However, fortune smiled on him when he met a local girl, Beryl Job, and became engaged.

He joined the RAAF and during training at Narrandera, he wrote to one of his former students, 11 year old John Mostyn, saying that training was both fun and hard work. He enjoyed chasing his friends about while flying, and missed his students. Proving that 'once a teacher, always a teacher', he also encouraged John in his studies.

Alec travelled to England and joined the RAF bomber command. He was the first pilot of the Lancaster bomber "G for George", the most famous and luckiest plane in the war. George flew a massive 90 sorties over Europe and never lost a crew member.

‘George’ is now the prize exhibit in the Australian War Memorial Canberra. Near the cockpit there are 13 painted bombs with a stick figure next to each of them featuring a halo.

This signified that Alec, nicknamed "the Saint", was pilot for the first 13 of ‘George's’ bombing missions – a lucky number for him.

He moved on to other units and other aircraft.

In 1943, Alec retrained to fly dive bombing Mosquito planes. By June 1944, he had amassed a total of 73 missions a remarkable number for pilots in the RAF at that time – indicating his good fortune to that point.

Tragically his luck ran out. His last mission was a dive bombing attack on a German V1 'doodlebub' storage facility in France.

Doodlebugs were essentially unmanned planes consisting of a bomb with wings and one of the world's first jet engines – a forerunner of our modern drones. The Germans sent more than 10,000 of them over the Channel causing severe damage and terror in English cities, mainly London.

However, they were prone to malfunction, and only 25% of them reached their target for various reasons. On the way home after a successful bombing raid, Alec flew near a doodlebug recently launched from another facility. It malfunctioned and prematurely exploded, killing him and his Australian navigator Geoff Heath, a one in a million chance. Alec is buried in Abbeville France with Geoff, who had been recently married to an English girl, with Alec as his best man.

Today we remember the fallen soldiers and the returned veterans. We remember their bravery and determination and their willingness to fight for our country, Australia.”

Bank Closure

Another one goes

Going ... going ... gone! The tallest tree in Bank Street had to be removed last week due to damage by pests. Discovered by Dave Campbell and Bob Bennett (two local community members) and at the same time was noticed by our friendly Council outdoor staff who took immediate action.

Further inspection by professionals advised that the badly diseased tree was unsafe and likely to fall.

Thank you to Matt Christenson Deputy General Manager, Cabonne Infrastructure who consulted with Bank Street business and residential owners to advise of the tree removal and the reasons why.

But this was not before some keyboard warriors hit Facebook with the weird assumption that felling was somehow premeditated “was stupid and wrong ... they were planted by families who paid for them not to be cut down by whinging ppl...”

But not to fear, donation plaques under the trees and on former broken planter boxes were removed some years ago and safely stored for appropriate reinstatement when the Main Street landscaping refurbishment goes ahead.

Eating wild mushrooms: it’s not worth the risk

With the recent wet weather providing optimal growing conditions for wild mushrooms, The NSW Poisons Information Centre is warning people to avoid ingesting the potentially fatal fungi.

From January to March this year, the NSW Poisons Information Centre received 155 calls regarding mushroom exposures.

Of these 155 calls, 95 were accidental exposures, with more than 80% of accidental exposures occurring in children under five years old. Alarmingly, there were 33 calls regarding adults who ate wild mushrooms as food, and 20 calls regarding cases of mushrooms being ingested for recreational purposes.

Mushrooms found in the wild, even in people’s own backyard, are not safe to eat.”

Scott Morrison finds strong women can be tough players Scott Morrison is inclined to underestimate tough women.

He’s done this in the past, to his detriment.

In 2006, when he was managing director of Tourism Australia, Morrison was sacked after falling out with the board and federal Liberal tourism minister, Fran Bailey.

Years later, in 2018, the Australian Financial Review quoted Tim Fischer, who’d chaired Tourism Australia at the time, saying “a lot of us could see it coming as relations between Scott and Fran Bailey had deteriorated over a range of issues. But Scott didn’t seem to see it.”

Morrison was close to then prime minister John Howard and he thought – erroneously – Howard would step in and save him from Bailey.

But Howard supported his minister.

Fast forward to 2021, and Morrison’s grappling with a broad “women problem”. And women playing hardball are all around the place.

Take just two current examples, Christine Holgate and Grace Tame.

In a submission to a Senate inquiry released this week Holgate, former Australia Post CEO, has launched a comprehensive counterattack to her being effectively forced out of her job last year, after a ferocious prime ministerial attack.

On a very different front Tame, the young and feisty Australian of the Year, has targeted Morrison’s choice of Amanda Stoker to become the new assistant minister for women.

Morrison in October excoriated Holgate over her rewarding four employees with Cartier watches (worth an average of $5000) for landing a lucrative deal with banks, which sustained Post’s network of franchises around the country.

Immediately after Holgate had told a Senate committee about the watches, a furious Morrison let loose in the parliament. Declaring the action disgraceful, he said: “The chief executive has been instructed to stand aside and, if she doesn’t wish to do that, she can go.”

A devastated Holgate, regarded as a high-performing CEO, soon left her position.

A later inquiry (which the government initially declined to release) found no dishonesty or intentional misuse of Post’s funds, although it did find the purchase of the watches was inconsistent with the legislative obligation imposed on Post.

The controversy has now resurfaced with a Senate inquiry, instigated by Pauline Hanson, at which Holgate will appear next week.

Holgate argues in her submission the watches’ purchase was “legal, within Australia Post’s policies, within my own signing authority limits, approved by the previous Chairman, expensed appropriately, signed off by auditors and the [chief financial officer]”.

While Holgate in her submission focuses her ire on Post’s chairman, Lucio Di Bartolomeo, rather than on Morrison, the affair goes directly to the PM’s original reaction, which blackened her reputation.

Regardless of whether Post, as a government business, should have used watches as rewards, Morrison’s outburst was extreme and ill judged.

It led to a highly competent chief of a government

business being publicly trashed and unnecessarily sacrificed, over not very much.

Holgate – who attracted sympathy from many CEOs and support among Australia Post small businesses – has yet to be replaced, a long and expensive process.

Morrison obviously thought the name “Cartier” would resonate (negatively) with his “quiet Australians”. If the employees had each been given cash bonuses of $5000 would he have reacted in the same way? The answer seems clear.

A harder question is, if the CEO had been male, would the PM’s temper tantrum have been as unrestrained?

Impossible to say, of course. But many people, especially women in this current climate of heightened sensitivity, would believe he’d have been more measured.

Grace Tame – whose passionate words when awarded Australian of the Year were an influence on Brittany Higgins to go public with her rape allegation – is potentially an ongoing thorn in the side of a PM trying to assure women he “gets it”.

She’s a strong woman who finds herself, suddenly and unexpectedly, with a megaphone and she will use it all year.

In nominating Stoker, who is socially conservative and can be combative, as assistant minister for women, Morrison was inviting trouble.

Apart from dealing with the problems posed by Christian Porter and Linda Reynolds, the PM’s reshuffle was an effort to improve his and his government’s credentials on women’s issues.

It promoted female ministers and inserted references to “women” in various ministerial titles.

Yet he put Stoker into a position that would inevitably spark an adverse reaction among some women’s advocates.

Tame claimed Stoker had “supported a fake rape crisis tour aimed at falsifying all counts of sexual abuse on campuses across the nation”.

She said Stoker had also “supported” men’s rights advocate Bettina Arndt “who gave a platform [in an interview] to the pedophile who abused me”.

Stoker returned fire, defending her record promoting justice for women, and saying, “I did not attend Ms Arndt’s campus tour. I raised it in Senate estimates to highlight the universities’ inconsistent approaches to free speech and deplatforming.”

This week she dismissed Tame’s claims about falsifying accounts of abuse on campuses as “utter nonsense”.

Leaving aside the nitty gritty of their dispute, in the circumstances Morrison made a provocative choice, when he could have allocated the post to a less controversial frontbencher.

On Thursday Morrison and his new attorney-general Michaelia Cash unveiled the government’s full response to the Sex Discrimination Commissioner’s Respect@ Work report.

The measures will strengthen protection for people in workplaces against sexual harassment and remove the exemption from the sex discrimination legislation that members of parliament and judges now enjoy – although Morrison could not say how this would be applied in relation to MPs. On Wednesday the government announced a two-day National Women’s Safety Summit to be held in late July.

The budget will have the stamp “women” on parts of it.

But the Prime Minister is not keen on the call, put forward for Friday’s national cabinet by Queensland premier Annastacia Palaszczuk, for a summit to address the “economic and social inequality facing Australian women”.

Palaszczuk, seizing the moment, wants national cabinet to host such a summit, which would have state and territory and stakeholder representatives. It would canvass issues including the pay and superannuation gender gaps and affordable child care.

“It’s the perfect time to have it,” she says. “Everyone is having conversations – in workplaces, around kitchen tables, on social media.”

A combination of such a broad agenda and so many strong women would make that a formidable political challenge for Morrison. (theconversation.com.au)

Des Sullivan celebrates his 90th Birthday - at ‘home’

Des with the love of his life, Nea. When Nea Jordan and her family moved to Molong - Des was smitten by the lovely Nea. The proposal came - the popular young couple married, raised their daughters Lorrae and Ngaretta, ran their shearing contractor business, worked positively as community volunteers and contributed enormously to the building and development of Molong of the future, for the future.

Asking Des to take part in, or lead community volunteering initiatives hardly ever received a negative response from the energetic shearing contractor, ambulance driver, member of APEX, the Molong Historical Museum, medical centre advocate ... etc. etc. Such was the love Des has always had for his town and the people.

Now living in Bathurst and closer to family - the cheerful Molong ‘boy’ often returns ‘home’ accompanied by the loves of his life, wife Nea and daughters Lorrae and Ngaretta, sons-in-law, grandchildren, etc.

When his 90th birthday rolled around - Des wanted to celebrate his special event back in Molong, back ‘home’ and with long-time friends.

Still with his wicked smile, cheery personality, gifted humour (not forgetting his good looks) intact - Des was delighted to be back ‘home’ where he had time to sit for awhile and reminisce over a delicious lunch prepared by Mario at the Molong RSL Club.

Last week, children and the staff team, parents, carers from the Molong Early Learning Centre ...walked hand-in-hand together wearing their little orange safety vests to the Cenotaph to place their wreath. Well done to Sharni and her team.

I remember the time when a man’s status was based on the quality of his horse and the price of his buggy. The well­bred horse bestowed upon its owner those qualities of breeding which set it apart and stamped it as an aristocrat amongst its kind. Men of lowly birth were lifted by the ownership of such horses to altitudes of importance they would never otherwise have attained. In keeping with the breeding of their horses they were regarded as well-bred men and could speak to squatters in terms of equality.

Which brings me to Mrs Jane BryceForbes.

She was the wife of the local baker but had the formation of a woman of breeding.

She walked with an S-bend, the result, so my father said, of whalebone corsets so tightly laced that Sandow himself couldn’t have got another hitch in them. My sister informed me, speaking in whispers, that her underclothes were of the finest calico but heaven forbid that I should ever show an interest in the mysterious back country of Mrs Jane Bryce-Forbes.

To me she existed as a dignified exterior and only darkness lay beneath her floorlength, pleated skirt of tweed. The coat of her tailored costume was lined with silk and trimmed with oriental braid and cream lace. Fountains of lace burst beneath the cuffs and partly concealed her white-gloved hands. A lace collar reinforced with whalebone held her head in a permanent position of disdain.

But it was her hat that impressed me. It featured a stuffed bird - eyes, beak, legs the whole bloody lot. I spent an hour with old Mick O’Shaughnessy who had a set of Gould’s bird books but I’m damned if we could track it down. Mick concluded, and I agree with him, that it must have been a bird from some foreign country where birds with red heads and yellow bodies

were as common as sparrows are here.

That was Mick’s opinion anyway and he knew more about birds than anyone I’ve ever met. Mrs Jane Bryce-Forbes’ hat, though evidence of impeccable taste, would never have convinced me of her· high breeding unless I had not heard her described in these terms by men whose breeding was undeniable.

Mr Charles F. Robinson, the owner of the district flour mill, who frequently visited Mr Bryce-Forbes carrying an order book, was once talking to him in my presence. I was standing a few yards away eating a licorice strap and I heard him with my own ears.

He said, ‘You have a remarkably wellbred wife, Arthur.’ That’s what he said.

Arthur, who was badly bred, gave him a look like a crow looking up a hollow log.

He was a bit touchy about cracks that suggested his bread was crook. But Mr Robinson didn’t mean anything, I could see that.

He had confirmed what I had already felt about Mrs Jane Bryce-Forbes and I told father about it to show him how I understood women.

He was straightening a stanchion of the wagon at the time and I didn’t quite catch what he said but I think he said, ‘S’help me God!’ Anyway I was disappointed in what he said.

There was another well-bred man who drove up with an Abbott buggy and pair. He talked to Arthur about land or something. He gave me a penny to sit in the buggy and hold his horses and when he came out he said to me, ‘That’s a fine, stylish-looking woman in there. What’s her name?’

Mrs Jane Bryce-Forbes.’ ‘Shit!’ he exclaimed.

Molong Children of William Street:

Poppies Handcrafted to Remember Veteran Ancestors on Anzac Day 2021

By Emily Gobourg Several Molong residents of William Street stood at the end of their driveways to light up the dawn on Anzac Day, surrounded by a stunning, display of handcrafted poppies.

On otherwise barren battlefields, the poppy was said to be a common sighting on the Western Front during the First World War, when the conflict of battle had finally ceased. Thus, the poppy flower became a lasting memorial, symbolising remembrance for those who had fought for their countries, and for those who had sadly died during their fight.

In the days leading up to Anzac Day this year, the great – and great-great – grandchildren of unforgotten World War II veterans, spent several hours to creatively express their remembrance of those who shall not be forgotten.

These William Street children formed templates from red poster board to create the shape of the significant poppy flower, before outlining finer details with a black marker, and then securing them to fit into the ground with bamboo skewers.

Amidst the remembrance display, William Street resident, Graham “Rabbit” Wilson, stood with his children before daybreak, with a picture of his great grandfather – and former Mayor of Molong (dating back to the late 1920’s), Francis “Frank” Henry Myors – who served in the army during WWII, where he was based in Darwin during the time of war where the city was attacked by bombing, during a Japanese air raid.

William Street neighbour to “Rabbit”, Brad Webb, also stood at dawn alongside his daughter – the great grandchild (on her maternal side of the family) to WWII veteran Private Kenneth Wilfred Morgan – a man who also bravely served in the army during the Second World War, who was based in Papua New Guinea.

Illuminated by a myriad of red, tea light candles, the children and their family members – of proud-serving ancestors who will not be forgotten – stood together at the end of their driveways to light up the dawn. Their posterboard remembrance poppies stood proud and Proud “Light Up the Dawn” residents of Molong’s William Street tall, with the wings of the “Lest We Forget” flag (from L to R): Hannah, Elanore, Emma, Jacynta, Brad Webb, Chris, moving gracefully with the wind behind them.

Western NSW Primary Centrelink call centre: real people, Health Network Welcomes please, not robots new CEO

Western Health Alliance Limited (WHAL), which operates as the Western NSW Primary Health Network (WNSW PHN), is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr Andrew Coe as its new Chief Executive Officer.

The Combined Pensioners & Superannuants Association (CPSA) reports receiving a call from a man in his nineties who said he had run out of savings and could he please have the pension.

We explained to him he needed to apply to Centrelink online. He could also ring them up, or he could go to a Centrelink office in person.

However, he was not online.

His eyesight had deteriorated to the point where he could no longer drive to get him to the nearest Centrelink office. He lived alone. He did not have home care. No one to drive him or help him.

We gave him the number for Centrelink, 13 23 00. This number is described on the Centrelink website as the “Centrelink Older Australians Line”.

If you ring it, an automated, speech recognition-enabled answering service asks you for your Customer Access Number.

CPSA gave it try to see what this man in his nineties would encounter when he rang the role of WNSW PHN CEO in July Centrelink Older Australians Line.

Banks take one step forward and two steps back ON 4 April 2021, The Australian Banking Association (ABA) said in a media release that Australian banks are launching updated guidelines on financial abuse focusing on reducing the impacts of family violence and elder abuse.

Although it’s good that banks are taking these issues seriously, with more and more bank branches closing its hard to see how these guidelines will effectively support older people who are forced to bank in ways that they are not familiar with which further exposes them to financial risk.

The ABA says it has worked with banks and community advocates to provide specialised training to ensure bank staff can recognise signs of financial abuse.

ABA CEO Anna Bligh said in the same media release “Anyone experiencing financial abuse should talk to their bank. They are ready to help”.

However, you probably won’t be able to talk to someone from your bank in person as bank branches continue to close, rapidly.

Channel Nine News reported on 8 April 2021 that a shift to electronic banking during the COVID-19

pandemic has seen banks close hundreds of branches over the last 18 months.

The Financial Services Union (FSU) closely monitors bank branch closures in Australia. On the FSU website they say that 640 bank branches across Australia have closed since 2017, most occurring in regional Australia.

What’s the reason for closing branches? Banks suggest that their customers are flocking to online services and aren’t going into branches anymore. However, online or even phone banking services won’t be much use for people living in the country with poor internet services and bad phone lines.

Financial services can be complex and confusing, so it is good to see banks addressing the risk of financial abuse that affects so many older people.

However, have banks stopped to think that by phasing out passbooks, closing bank branches, and forcing people to change the way they have banked for decades might expose people to further financial abuse?

Banks can’t claim to be putting a stop to financial abuse but at the same time alter their services in a way that creates uncertainty and

correct?”

“Yes”, we said.

“You’ll find your Customer Access Number on any piece of correspondence we have sent you.

So, let’s try that again. What is your Customer Access Number?”

This went around a few more times before we decided to hang up.

We tried a second time. This time the system did interpret our “Don’t have one” correctly and after a few more questions we got onto a live operator.

The question is how our caller, the man in his nineties would have gone.

When CPSA Head Office closed down at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, our phones went on automatic answering with options to get through to the right person.

Calls to CPSA dropped dramatically. It is the reason two members of staff returned to the office after only three months working from home. After that, calls returned to their previous levels very quickly.

It goes to show that people, particularly older people, and particularly when they are trying to access an essential service like the Age Pension, need to be answered by a real live person, not a robot.

Obley remembers those who served (from page 2)

Warming up around the fire after the Obley ANZAC Dawn Service is one of the local traditions - and enjoyable!

Another tradition at Obley is the delicious egg and bacon breakfast with hot drinks provided from the local coffee van.

A delightful boy - Nate waited for the service completion - then he was off to play with his friends. “I love this photo” said ANZAC Day Express photographer. “Nate epitomises country with a smile that warms many hearts.”

Munching on his bread roll - the Express photographer eventually (with the help of Darcy’s mum) was given a very short smile from this little guy!

It was a horse that convinced me of Mrs Jane Bryce­Forbes’ breeding.

He was a six-year-old gelding though father, after examining his mouth, said to me, ‘He’ll never see eight again.’ He also claimed that he’d been down and told me to look at his knees where the hair had grown awry. But they looked all right to me. She drove him in an expensive rubber-tyred jinker with long hickory shafts. It was exciting to see him in action with his free stride.

He was by Warrior out of Gay Girl and had inherited some of his sire’s spirit.

His mane was clipped and his tail was docked and he had a high lifting gait that suggested pride in movement. A martingale held his neck in a dignified arch and he often reefed at the bit and snorted when under restraint. Under the whip he could do a mile in three minutes.

This was all evidence of his aristocratic lineage and it lifted Mrs Jane Bryce-Forbes and set her apart so that one imagined she must have been by Warrior out of Gay Girl herself.

She always recognised me even when she was driving her horse, and though this was little enough it did succeed in increasing my importance. In fact several people saw her talking to me from -the gig. She might only say, ‘Hello’ or something like that, but it put me on the map, so to speak. That was until I started riding Hairy. Legs.

Hairy Legs was lent to me by a farmer who wanted her exercised. She was in foal and trotting would do her good, he said. But I wasn’t to gallop her. I could understand that. She would have galloped badly even if she wasn’t in foal, but in foal she moved like a sailing ship in a rough sea. But trotting! There was never a trotter like her. She had won a trotting race down at South Ecklin, the farmer told me, and though this was only a bush settlement it lifted her from obscurity to a position of respect.

However, no one believed this story except me. I think it was her appearance that made people discredit such a claim.’She was what was known as a ‘light delivery’ type, a horse by a halfdraught out of a bush hack and gave the impression of being humiliated by her breeding. Her legs were feathered like a draught and swung beneath her as if they were weighted. The straight line of her back continued along her neck to her ears. Her eyes were heavylidded, undisturbed by the promises of her condition. She stood perfectly still when being mounted and only returned to reality when the rider, after settling himself comfortably in the saddle, brought his heel against her side.

According to the urgency of the heel she either set off at a walk, a trot or a canter.

Hairy Legs had one peculiarity, the discovery of which came as a great shock to me. I was trotting her at a moderate speed when, to catch up with a school mate riding ahead, I urged her with heels and voice to a faster pace.

She suddenly sank lower in height and broke into a pace and I found myself travelling at a speed of which I had never imagined her capable.

Hairy Legs was not a natural pacer.

She always walked, never ambled. A pace was a gait she had discovered she could do when the speed demanded of her was greater than a trot. It explained how she won the trot at South Ecklin. It was a delightful gait for the rider. One did not have to rise to the trot but just sat there moving swiftly while looking

down at her speeding legs describing sweeps each side of her, first to the right and then to the left, that gave the impression of swaying to those who watched her. One day in early summer I was riding her home from school. She was walking with her head down and the reins slack on her neck. I concluded as I sat there that life was indeed hard on boys who rode disreputable horses.

The drivers of the buggies and gigs that passed me with their spanking horses tossing contemptuous heads, hardly noticed me as I plodded along in the dust by the side of the road. I decided that some day I would own a horse like that of Mrs Jane Bryce-Forbes and I would drive it in a rubber-tyred gig with gleaming harness just as she did.

I was considering how low you can get when burdened with a horse like Hairy Legs when I became conscious that a horse and gig were slowing up behind me. The vehicle drew level with me then the horse dropped to a walk. It was Mrs Jane Bryce-Forbes, stuffed bird and all. The bird was partly obscured by a white gossamer that went round the hat and was fastened in a loose knot beneath her chin. She looked better bred than I’d ever seen her. I tightened my reins to lift the head of Hairy Legs into a position that would suggest she still had some interest in life, but she quickly dropped it again.

Hairy Legs had no quality whatsoever.

She liked her head down ‘How are you, Alan?’ said Mrs Jane Bryce-Forbes as her horse pranced beside me on the metal. And although I say it myself, no woman could have been more gracious.

‘I am well, Mrs Bryce-Forbes,’ I said.

I never forget my manners when speaking to a well-bred woman even though I was in a highly nervous state owing to her having spoken to me.

‘That’s a funny old horse you’re riding,’ she said. ‘What’s its name?’

‘Hairy Legs,’ I answered, and I can tell you it cost me an effort to get the words out.

‘Dear me!’ she exclaimed. ‘It certainly suits the horse doesn’t it. But I can see he’s quiet, that’s the main thing isn’t it.

Ride carefully won’t you.’

‘Oh, I’ll do that Mrs Bryce-Forbes,’ I said, but I was getting fed up with this ‘Ride carefully’ business. What in the hell did she take me for? I was eleven years old and had ridden for years.

‘Well, I’m in a hurry and must be going,’ she said. ‘Look after yourself.’

There she went again.

I’m in a hurry myself,’ I said. ‘Goodbye, Mrs Bryce­Forbes.’

I kicked Hairy Legs into a trot. She flicked her bay with a whip and we trotted side by side. She smiled sweetly down at me. ‘My, you are riding well,’ she said.

Hell!!

She touched her bay with a whip and he really got down to it. I shoved the boots into Hairy Legs and she suddenly flattened into a pace. I didn’t give a damn whether she foaled on the road. I left Mrs Bryce-Forbes for dead.

I covered her stuffed bird with dust and went down that road like a bat out of hell.

Behind me I could hear the swish of her whip and the pounding feet of her bay. Then I was speeding on in silence and she was far behind me.

She never spoke to me after that.

Anyway, bugger Mrs Bryce-Forbes.

The son of a Larras Lee early settler farming family - Ron served this area and the farming community well. He will be missed and remembered.

“Inspirational” Guerie - Molong Game doesn’t dissappoint

Matt Steventon Last Saturday at 1:00pm, Molong went up against fierce rivals – the Geurie Goats – for Round 3 of the Oils Plus competition.

It was a beautiful day down at the Rec, where a sensational game of rugby was played, with the game going down to the wire.

The Molong Magpies have a fairly young team this year – led by club stalwarts Zac White, Joe Reid, and Kyle Travis – but this was no deterrent when it came to confronting the age, size, and experience of the Guerie team, fielding 21 Fijian men from the full bench that arrived.

From the kick-off, Molong applied the pressure that the black and white are renowned for – shocking the visitors by retaining the ball with well-executed phases.

Molong's forwards barraged the Geurie line over and over again, and though Geurie's defence held strong – it was pierced twice by Kyle Travis – bringing the score to 10-0. Geurie sent the ball wide to score in return before the half-time break, converting to bring the score to 10-7.

The second half produced an action-packed performance from both sides, with strong runs by Lachie Wells, and Jai Wilcox.

Brothers Max and Harry Pierce were a formidable combination at half back and five eighth, giving great ball to the centres, and placing the ball deep into the Geurie territory at any opportunity.

Ross Cary put another five points on the board for Molong, with Geurie returning fire with a few tries in quick succession, bringing the score to 15-26.

Rugby League Manildra had a bye while Molong 50 d Cargo 26 in a high scoring win against old foes, In League Tag Cargo d Molong 20-0 but only after our improving side held them to 6 nil at half time.

Paul Glynn (Molong & surrounding districts) – 0428 168 638 CATTLE 27 APRIL 2021 It was a good quality yarding with good numbers of ideal feeder cattle along with good numbers to suit the processors. There were limited numbers of grown steers and heifers and there were 400 cows penned which were mostly in prime condition. There were also fair numbers of weaners yarded to suit the restockers.

Young cattle to the trade were firm to 3c cheaper with prime vealers selling from 460c to 498c/kg. Prime steer yearlings sold from 385c to 485c while the prime heifer yearlings sold from 370c to 469c/kg. Feeder steers and heifers were 11c dearer with the feeder steers selling from 400c to 486c while the feeder heifers sold from 380c to 446c/kg. Young cattle to the restockers were considerably cheaper with the young steers selling from 400c to 592c while the young heifers sold to 490c/kg.

The few grown steer and heifers were 3c to 7c cheaper with the prime steers selling from 320c to 400c/kg. Prime grown heifers sold from 330c to 390c/kg. Cows were 7c cheaper with the 2 and 3 scores selling from 230c to 285c to the

head steered the Magpies back into controlling the ball, and after a number of structured plays, the patience paid off – which saw Charlie Cooper going over the line, with a conversion by Zac White. The Magpies were brought within striking distance – with five to go on the Bullet Dean score board, reading 22-26.

Both teams knew what was on the line – and with only one minute to go – Geurie found a gap, sealing the win at a final score of 31-22.

The spirit of the game was stunning to say the least.

Andrew Gray refereed the game, holding both teams to account while play was on. The respect displayed by both teams (both on and off the field) was easily recognised by all attending. The formalities followed with on-field speeches, led by Molong Magpie team captain Max Pierce, and the Geurie Goats club president, Matt Dowel.

Molong Magpies’ points for the day saw three points go to Charlie "Chubby" Cooper (Hooker), two points to Ross Cary (Second Row), and one point to Zac White (Centre). Player’s Player was split equally between Josh Raines, and Charlie Cooper.

The afternoon was wrapped up with an extremely impressive and inspirational hymn performed by the Geurie Goats team, followed by a group photo of both the Molong and Guerie clubs combined.

Molong will play Trangie (Tigers) in Trangie next weekend at 2:00pm, which will be followed by another home game hosted by Molong on the 8th May, in Round 5 against Canowindra (Pythons) for the Ian Hanrahan Shield at 2:00pm.

We hope to see everyone down at the Rec for the Round 5 hitout.

League Tag 1:15pm; First Grade 2:30pm processors and 300c/kg to the feeders. Prime heavy weight cows sold from 280c to 313c to average 303c/kg. Heavy bulls were cheaper selling to 303c/kg.

SHEEP 21 April 2021 It was another top quality yarding with some outstanding heavy weight lambs along with odd pens of neat trade weights. There was also a couple of runs of exotic lambs and Merinos as well as some good pens of Merino hoggets. Not all the usual buyers were operating in a mostly cheaper market.

Trade lambs were $6 cheaper selling from $162 to $203 to average between 800c and 835c/kg cwt. Heavy weight lambs were firm to $5/head cheaper with the 24kg to 30kg lambs selling from $192 to $235 to average 785c/kg cwt. The lambs over 30kg sold from $235 to $270 to average 745c/kg cwt. Merino lambs were $4 cheaper with the trade weights selling from $145 to $182/head. Restocker lambs were firm to $3 cheaper selling from $130 to $202/ head. Merino lambs to the restockers sold for $108/head. Crossbred hoggets sold to $210 and Merino hoggets sold to $190/head.

It was a plainer quality yarding of mutton with larger numbers of secondary sheep lacking finish penned. Merino sheep were up to $20 cheaper while the crossbreds were up to $30/ head cheaper. Merino ewes sold from $108 to $176 while crossbred ewes sold from $80 to $191/head. Merino wethers sold from $122 to $198/head. The restockers paid from $149 to $167 for Merino ewes and $248/head for a pen of crossbred ewes. A pen of White Dorper ewes sold to the restockers for $210/head.

Ladies There were 12 lady golfers at Yeoval last Wednesday and all enjoyed their 9 holes of golf.

The winners on the day were Helen Balcomb and Sue Stanford runner up.

Our Molong Ladies Tournament is on this Thursday 29th so hope to see as many as possible there as there are some great prizes.

On Wednesday 5th we will be playing an 18 hole stroke plus Putting.

Sunday Mixed A cool sunny Sunday morning greeted eleven players for golf with Scott being the winner and Mac coming all the way from Perth to play Royal N/olong coming in second, although most scores were close.

Several balls were lost over the fence or in the rough and those that lost them discovered that golf balls are like eggs. They’ve white, they are sold by the dozen, and a week later you have to buy more.

Darren must play what could be described as an expansive game.

I noticed when he played the 10th he was hitting his second shot from the adjacent fairway and when playing the 17th he was across the road playing his second shot from the adjacent 18th fairway. No wonder his buggy broke down.

As for Stubba, on the 10th he was wider than the adjacent 11th and in “no man’s land” although he recovered well.
