Decades of hard work pays off for local families

In the late 1960’s a group of parents came together to explore the idea of setting up a pre-school in Molong. Funding was not readily available for this kind of facility (let alone a childcare centre) in a small rural town like Molong - but children needed that special year before they entered school.

Local parent Essie Sullivan came together with a number of town and district residents to set up Molong’s first early childhood learning centre in the Anglican Hall in Bank Street until the very basic RSL building became vacant in Riddell Street. A number of work parties followed accompanied by grant applications

and fundraisers of all shapes and sizes to fit-out and resource the centre. Wendy Kirby was selected as the first pre-school teacher. Last Sunday Essie returned to help cut the special cake to celebrate the countless decades of hardwork by parents, staff and children in developing the old buildings and grounds into the spectacular Molong Early Learning Centre of today. Coalition scrapes back in as minor parties surge “It’s not a game of SimCity,” NSW treasurer, Dominic Perrottet assured viewers on the ABC’s NSW election night coverage.

“Sydney’s under construction”, he added, acknowledging the Coalition government’s unfinished infrastructure projects are causing grief, but noting, “I don’t sense any baseball bats”. He was right.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian’s Liberal-National government was returned to office on Saturday night, albeit on a slender margin. With the victory came some wreckage, and largely unexpected beneficiaries.

This poll was predicted to be decided in the bush, and that’s where the movement occurred.

The Nationals lost the long held seats of Murray and Barwon on swings of around 27% and 21% respectively. And it was the Shooters, Farmers and Fishers that swept the field, capitalising on internal Nationals strife and pledging to act on the fish kill, water security and the drought.

The Shooters also consolidated the slender claim they had on Orange after the 2017 byelection, securing a 37% swing to make the central west firmly their own. A possible tempering of the Shooters vote in light of events in Christchurch didn’t eventuate, with victorious Orange candidate, Phil Donato, telling Channel Seven, “there wasn’t a real lot of talk about it”, adding, “it’s unfortunate it was politicised by the government.”

NSW Nationals leader John Barilaro remarked that his was “not a party of ideology” but a “party of geography”. He wasn’t wrong.

While they incurred considerable drops in support in parts of the central, southern and outer west of the state, the Nationals actually attracted a swing of, on average, 5.6% across the seats of Clarence, Cootamundra, Monaro, Northern Tablelands and Oxley. Nevertheless, their Coalition partners were clearly concerned at the federal implications. Progressive Liberal Trent Zimmerman reserved particular scorn for Barnaby Joyce, arguing the NSW result confirmed, “he should spend more time in Tamworth and less time on TV”.

Newly-minted independent, Joe McGirr, has made Wagga Wagga his own, retaining the seat he won from the Liberals at last year’s byelection and building his buffer to over 15%. Long-standing Lake Macquarie independent, Greg Piper has put the one-time Labor stronghold squarely out of reach, picking up a 12% swing in the process. Depending on the flow of votes in the lower house, there is talk Piper will be approached for the speakership.

Affirming this election’s broad trend away from the major parties, Alex Greenwich retained Sydney with a roughly 3% swing in his favour. While still in doubt, independent Mathew Dickerson is making a very close run affair of Dubbo, nudging the high profile Nationals’ candidate, Dugald Saunders, a former ABC radio host.

Unlike the independents and the Shooters, One Nation was never going to secure lower house representation. But it did make

notable inroads in urban areas. At last count, the NSW arm of Pauline Hanson’s party was odds on to usurp the Greens as the third force in Sydney metropolitan seats like Camden, Holsworthy, Penrith and Wollondilly.

Despite their recent internal turmoil, the Greens made a strong showing in lower house voting.

Jamie Parker (Balmain) and Jenny Leong (Newtown) substantially grew their base, securing swings of 6.4 and 5.1% respectively. While in the north, Tamara Smith expanded her two-party preferred vote to over 57%.

The struggle to take neighbouring Lismore is going down to the wire, with former federal Labor MP, Janelle Saffin a chance to pull ahead of the Greens and Nationals in a complex three-way preference contest.

The outcome for the Greens and the Coalition in the upper house won’t be determined for some time.

The trend towards minor parties and independents in the lower house, however, suggests that they will feature substantially in the 21 Legislative Council spots in play.

One Nation’s Mark Latham looks to have secured the required 4.55% vote share, with his party a chance for a second. At last count, the Coalition had just over seven spots, Labor six the Greens two and the Shooters one. The eventual upper house composition will almost certainly see the Coalition required to deal with a significantly expanded and unwieldy crossbench; a change from their current, more predictable arrangements, usually with the Christian Democrats.

This election will be remembered as a contest of clear delineations for the Coalition. While their partners, the Nationals, took substantial hits in the bush, the Liberals managed to hold the line in the city, losing Coogee, but retaining marginal East Hills, against the odds.

Labor leader Michael Daley’s “schools and hospitals before stadiums” message may have found traction in pre-election polling and with parts of the electorate, but it wasn’t sufficient for a relatively untested leader to take down a government pledging to “get it done” on infrastructure programs worth over A$80 billion.

Getting it done is the task now for the Berejiklian government, who will be looking to deliver on the large scale but delay-plagued infrastructure projects it has undertaken. Pressing ahead with that agenda won’t be easy for a government skirting a possible minority in the lower house and an unknown quantity in the upper house.

As for Labor, Daley is seeking to stick it out. Barring the stumbles of the last week of his campaign, he has performed remarkably well for a leader in the job only four months, fronting a party that only eight years ago suffered one of the worst electoral defeats in Australian political history. That might not matter to those seeking a new leadership direction after Saturday’s result.

Donato holds Orange easily Member for Orange Phil Donato won twice as many votes in Saturday’s election as he did in the 2016 by-election.

Mr Donato, the Shooters Fishers and Farmers party candidate, won 49.99 per cent of the vote over main opponent Kate Hazelton (Nationals), 25.94%.

"I was being realistic and being a bit conservative. To basically double that in two years, it exceeded my expectations," Mr Donato said.

Mr Donato can treat the win as a personal victory.

Since winning the 2016 by-election by a mere 50 votes in

2016 (chiefly over the Greyhounds & Council amalgamations backlash) Mr Donato has established himself well throughout the community.

“I’ve been accessible and available,” he said.

A Show without Pavilions?

What kind of Show is that?

"The demolition and rebuilding of the two iconic buildings at the Molong Showgrounds will take a huge community effort" said Show Society President, Colin Woodhouse.

"The 2019 show will go on in September as planned" said Col. "However, after that we're not sure what will happen.

But we're (committee) working on it. At the moment we're waiting on Cabonne Council to work out how they may be able to assist."

Vinnies hit by storm damage

(Above) Molong's popular Vinnies store is closed, indefinitely, due to damage caused by strong winds during last Saturday's storm. A number of trees were also hit with a power blackout following in some areas of town.

The SES were kept busy last Saturday afternoon when a wild storm lashed parts of Molong including Bank Street where a brick chimney fell from a neighbouring

building through the roof of St. Vincent de Paul shop.

With extensive damage to mainly the office and storage area - Vinnies has had to close temporarily.

One of Bank Street's shady trees was also lost as a result of Saturday's storm.

This tree had been struggling since first planted and may have snapped due to its ongoing condition.

Other trees around town fell including at the East Molong Tennis Club where a large tree fell on the 'roller' equipment.

2019 local footy season returns - let’s cheer them on The 2019 Molong and Manildra footy season promises to be an outstanding one and great way to spend the coming weekends.

This weekend Molong Rugby League returns with the Bulls heading to Condobolin for their first match on Sunday (31 March). It’s great to see RL return to town after a number of year’s absence. There’s more ...

Molong Rugby Union will be fielding games for juniors via the Walla competition and Magpies Seniors matches which may well bring another Grand Final thriller. See Trial Match on P.10.

The Junior Roos Rugby League sides are set for another outstanding season.

We hear the ladies teams are also training hard.

NOT FORGETTING the Mighty Manildra Rhinos who last year almost brought home the Woodbridge Cup in a thrilling match. Maybe this year.

One of our local football talents, Cody Ramsey, continues in the 2019 season after gaining a place with St George in the Jersey Flegg competition. Take a drive to the big smoke and cheer for Cody.

Throughout the season the Express will be interviewing the coaches and team members of local footy teams. We’re looking forward to getting to know them ... we hope our readers and supporters will too.

Kicking off ... Meet Matt Steventon, the new President of Molong Rugby Union Club.

Matt and his family - the lovely Tamsin, Will (12) and Jack (10) moved to town 6 years ago and have become popular community members.

A builder by trade, Matt owns Cabonne Constructions who completed the Prunus Lodge refurbishment, and the more recent Molong Early Learning Centre development.

Matt’s Rugby started as a 7 year old in Sydney and continued with the Molong Magpies when he

played in the backs in 2013 and 2014.

This year, with the retirement of long-time Magpies President Greg Traves, Matt put his hand up to help lead the club into its 65th year. “I’m very proud to be the President” said Matt. “The Magpies are a long-standing club in the community with passionate players representing town and district each year.

“We head into the 2019 season with three fantastic and motivated coaches in the seniors - Graham Hobbs, Dean Buttler and Kyle Traves. “ “Brett Murdoch, who has returned to Molong, will be co-ordinating the Wallas and Junior Rugby. His leadership/training experience in the Army will be valuable for local kids to benefit from”.

Molong Probus Club News The Molong Probus Club met for its Annual General Meeting last month, and Helen Balcomb was elected as the new President.

Barbara Strong has taken on the position of Secretary, and David Bloomfield has remained as Treasurer. Congratulations to all Office Bearers.

Barry King was our guest speaker and told us about his life and time in the Military Police, where he served in Singapore for 2 years, and in Malaysia. His job was to look after Servicemen serving oversees.

On his retirement from the army

in 1985 he entered the Banking industry. He and his wife moved to Molong some years ago and are enjoying life in the Country.

Our next meeting is on Tuesday 9th April at the Molong Bowling Club commencing at 10.00am, followed by a quick cuppa and then we will be heading off on our Mystery Car Trial.

Letters Funeral courtesy What has happened to common decency and respect? I recently attended a local funeral and was appalled at the lack of both.

Have we really become so self centred that we no longer find it necessary to follow the traditional etiquette that was shown at funerals?

In the past it was common practice, if a funeral procession was approaching, and you were travelling along the road, you pulled over and waited for the cortege to pass, before going on your way. That is why vehicles in the procession have their headlights on. It alerts oncoming traffic that you are part of the cortege.

By the same token, pedestrians also stood quietly until the procession had passed.

Gentlemen wearing hats, took them off.

At the funeral in question, the hearse pulled out on the road and stopped to wait for the family to fall in behind it, but two cars had the insensitivity to pull out and stop right behind it and the undertaker was forced to approach the first car and tell them to stay where they were until the family fell in behind and the hearse moved one car length forward to allow space for the family's car.

Pedestrians, not attending the funeral, meandered past, and crossed the road through the cortage. Some crossing the street as the procession was going around the corner near the Village Green, forcing some cars to stop.

As the procession was going around the corner near the service station, traffic, which normally would have right of way failed to show any courtesy and forced the cortege to stop and allow them in. One of several vehicles was a white tradesmans ute loaded with pipes. Numerous vehicles travelling in the opposite direction just kept on driving past.

As the hearse reached the corner leading to the cemetery, a vehicle coming from the direction of Cummnock drove straight in front of it.

For heavens sake people, show some consideration for the loved ones of the deceased, who don’t deserve such callous disrespect, and show some respect for the Departed. One day it will be one of your loved ones, and how will you feel if this is done to you.

“It’s going to be a fun filled family oriented weekend starting on Saturday morning where the fishing competition rules will be handed out - before lines are thrown into the Molong Creek and Bell River - and other locations.”

“There will be a BBQ on Saturday from lunchtime - through to the evening when a band will perform in the beer garden of the Telegraph Hotel. Prizes and give-aways will happen all through the day and night with plenty of activity and games for young and old to enjoy.”

“Sunday will see the continuation of the family fun weekend - and the prize-giving for the fishing competition.”

“All money raised will support the Molong Hospital Auxiliary Palliative Care rooms refurbishment and the Molong Show Society”.

The way we were?

Anne Neil (see Letter to the Editor opposite) has lived in rural Australia all of her life - as a farmer, wife, mother, grandmother and neighbour to other landholders. Like other long-time rural residents, Anne has been raised understanding ‘how it works’ in rural Australia. Particularly, the traditions, the values, the often unstated ‘bush protocols’ that rural families have lived with for generations.

Anne’s ‘funeral courtesy’ is one of those traditions and values that have been now handed on to the children of the 1940’s and 50’s - the baby boomers of rural Australia.

Now the ‘holders of the baton representing rural values’ it is our turn as parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, senior community members to lead by example and keep such traditions alive.

Like the traditional Sunday baked roast served to the extended family on the best tablecloth covered table - some of these ‘bush protocols’ are worth keeping. Particularly in this 21st century of busy, busy lives ... social media, stress and anxiety and the mainstream media ‘kings of the radio waves beating “all things wrong with this country and the world” negativity into our daily lives.”

Like the paddocks and soils that surround us - the stability of family life in rural Australia is worth holding onto - with generational traditions like ‘funeral courtesy’ being held onto - tightly.

For it is these traditions that provide us with a stability - a strength of values - which will keep us together as family, community - whilst the world around us remains confused.

Consider? The purpose of the traditional rural hand-shake, a warm greeting, a gentle enquiry about each other which in today’s life is referred to as R.U.O.K., an offer of help to a struggling neighbour, community member, a warm cake, a bunch of home-grown flowers, vegies, fruits, a visit to residents now living in nursing care, community volunteering, a cuppa, a warm smile, a friendly face.

The Molong Community garden which is in the grounds of St. Johns on the corner of Bank and Edward Streets is starting a new time for getting together and doing some gardening, followed by morning tea.

We will be meeting at 9.30 am on the 1st Thursday of each month.

Buicks gather in Molong The Buick Car Club gathered in Molong on 15/16 and 17 March with local Buick enthusiasts introducing members from different parts of NSW to local tourist attractions, entertainment ... and local residents keen to reminisce about these great cars which were once sold in Bank Street from the former garage building which still stands today between Kay and Philip’s Chinese Restaurant and Barnseys.

A highlight of the three day event of car rallies and visits to experience local attractions - was the visit to John Lee’s property, Gamboola Cabonne. With the perfect setting of the Buick era - club members enjoyed a sheep shearing demonstration (using ‘click’ hand shears from times past) and time to walk around the historic buildings of one of Molong’s finest homesteads. (Above l to r) Proud Buick owners, Keith Packham (centre) and John Lee (right with Janine and John’s Buick.

John and Maggie Saddington of the Central Coast with their 1966 Buick Skylark - a stately model which they imported from the USA. “I had fond memories of the Buick Skylark my aunty drove. I loved the style so the Skylark was the car of my choice” said John. Maggie is a keen Buick Car Club member with John - who likes to knit as they travel”.

Thank you to former Molong resident Ron Barrett who sent the Express this family story about the above Buick which the late Bill Langdon used to deliver the Peabody/Sandy Creek Road mail.

“Bill (photographed above) used the Buick because it had good ground clearance and was durable - able to deal with the demands of rough roads and challenging terrain” said Ron Barrett. “The vehicle had a canvas hood. My mother (Ivy Barrett nee Bennett) recalls that some offroad driving across paddocks was part of the deal.”

“In those days bread was delivered with the mail - and ‘the postie’ also filled ‘special orders’ for all and sundry.

“When Bill signed up for WWII - his sister Ada took over the run using a horse and sulky as she had no licence at the time. “The next responsibility for the Peabody mail run passed to a nephew of Bill, Fred Bennett, (Ivy Barrett’s brother) who, ironically used another Buick 005 “.

“My mum purchased a beautiful 1936 Buick - like this one - from Mr and Mrs Finch for 4,000 pounds” said Rita Fisher (nee Smith) to visiting Wyong Buick Club Members, Ursula, Paul and Ciara White (with Rita standing third left). (Read Rita’s family memory below).

“Molong was flooded in 1955 then again, the following March 1956 - we were unfortunate to have been in those devastating waters. With a six-month-old baby my parents had no choice but to sell their home and move.

“Living rural was a new challenge for the whole family. More challenging was relying on friends to drive us into town and to school.

Mum’s great friend Eunice Chrystall of Larras Lee always rang to offer her help, and also to pick mum up to play tennis. George Lamb had the mail run and was also of great help.

“Dad had to finally go back to work as he had an 8-week shearing contract.

With a heavy heart he left his family to go shearing way out west, out as far as Roto and Ivanhoe. Dad always sent the pay cheque back home before going onto the next shed.

“Whilst dad was away working mum would say “well girls, I am going to learn to drive”.

Around and around mum drove on the property and had soon made a worn track.

“When dad had finally cut out and returned home from out West, he was astonished to find that his truck had been moved.

“Oh!! My God Maude, who has moved the truck?” “I did! Why?” asked mum.

“I think you had better show me, dad had said.

Both sitting up proudly in the truck, Mum was smiling as she thought of her secret achievement.

Dad was pleasantly surprised and said OK, you will now have to get a car, “L’s” and then your license - which mum proudly achieved.

“Mum purchased a beautiful 1936 Buick, which was brought from Mr & Mrs Finch for $4000 pounds. Constable Peter Lew was the Police officer at the time and he had passed mum for her License. “WOW”.

“Cruising in the Buick which had pure leather upholstery, and gears on the floor, not much different to the truck she first learnt to drive, well, that was proper flash for “Smithy”.

“The Buick was sold six years later for $5000 a nice little interest on the original outlay. The profit was well spent to purchase her new home in King Street.

“Smithy” held her drivers license right up to the age of 76. When she had 1 leg amputated.

“Seeing the 1936 Buick again at Gamboola Cabonne a few weekends ago holds so many memories for me and our family.”

Magpies Saturday Rugby Molong Magpies played a trial match in Millthorpe last Saturday against Blayney. The Magpies played great footy against a much bigger pack with a few of the ‘old boys’ making up the Maggy’s numbers in what was a day of 30 degree heat.

Whilst the boys lost 3-1 they definitely ‘gave it’ to the Blayney boys. Pre-match the boys stood for one minute silence to remember former Magpie team member, Ian Hanrahan, who passed away recently in an accident.

MOLONG GOLF Unfortunately for the golfers the Vets day had to be cancelled on Monday due to the beautiful rain.

Last Wednesday we traveled to Yeoval for our inter town game, there were 14 players who hit off in an 9 hole Ambrose which was a lot of fun, Helen Balcomb, June Stanbrook, and Virginia Craig were drawn out as the winners.

On Wednesday 3rd April we will play an 18hole Flag, 8.30 for 9.00 am hit off, and a reminder that the Ladies Tournament will be played on Thursday 11th April. *********************** Cumnock had their opening day on Saturday. Representatives from Molong were Roger and Ann Wood, Alan Evans and Margaret Philipson, Mark Oates and Helen Balcomb. Had a wonderful day plenty of fun finishing up with a great meal by the Cumnock lady members.

MOLONG CROQUET

Sunday the Ghost Walker and Jack braved the elements to play in the Monthly Mug at Royal Molong - but had to abandon ship as the rain suddenly came down in form.

Both ended up on the same amount of strokes - therefore there was no winner.

So, we shook hands and said "better luck next time".

Unfortunately on Monday the Veterans had to be called off as it was still raining at 7.30 a.m.

The Veterans won't play again this year.

Sunday 31st will be a 2 person Ambrose so golfers grab your partner and come out and have a bit of fun with your learner.

LANDMARK TABLELANDS LIVESTOCK CTLX Cattle Report Cows and young cattle made up a large percentage of the yarding. There was also a good selection of well finished trade cattle along with good numbers of ideal feeders. There was a limited supply of grown steers and heifers.

Young cattle to the trade were up to 15c dearer with prime vealers selling to 316c while the prime steer yearlings sold from 268c to 301c/kg. The prime heifer yearlings sold from 250c to 293c/kg.

Feeder steers were 15c to 20c/kg dearer.

The lightweight feeder heifers were 5c/ kg dearer while the heavier weights were close to firm. The feeder steers sold from 234c to 304c while the feeder heifers sold from 210c to 257c/kg. Young cattle to the restockers were 15c to 20c dearer with the young steers selling from 228c to 263c while the young restocker heifers sold from 150c to 231c/kg.

Grown steers were 5c cheaper with the prime medium weights selling from 250c to 270c/kg. Grown heifers were firm with the prime heavy weights selling from 215c to 252c/kg. Cows were 30c dearer with the 2 scores selling from 110c to 177c while the better 3 and 4 score cows sold from 169c to 220c with the prime heavy weights averaging 208c/kg. Bulls sold to 230c/kg.

Sale where in excess of 10,000 top quality cattle go under the hammer commencing at 10.00 am.

CTLX Sheep Report It was only a fair quality yarding, with a limited selection of trade weight lambs and odd only pens of heavy weights.

There was a good percentage of light weight lambs lacking finish.

Light weight lambs to the processors were $7 dearer, with the 12-18kg 2 scores making from $75 to $120/head. Trade lambs were $14 to $18 dearer, with the 18-23kg 3 score old lambs receiving from $120 to $171/head to average from 675c to 705c/kg cwt. Heavy weight lambs were $14 dearer, with the over 23kg 4 scores making from $150 to $180/head. Light trade weight Merino lambs sold to $125/ head. Lambs to the restockers were $6 to $12 dearer, with the better types making from $130 to $155, while light young lambs sold from $35 to $120/head. Hoggets sold to $155/head.

It was a mainly good quality mutton yarding where the light and medium weight sheep were $10 to $15 dearer, while the heavy weight crossbreds were up to $25/head dearer. 2 score ewes sold from $30 to $84, while the better 3 and 4 scores made from $85 to $133 for Merinos and $178.50/head for crossbreds. Merino wethers sold to $138/head.
