Labor is focused on the Bush, not Sydney stadiums: Daley

Labor says the Nationals must dump their $2.2 billion splurge on Sydney stadiums if they are serious about representing regional NSW. “The Nationals have to prove they are not a whollyowned subsidiary of the Liberal Party,” Shadow Treasurer Ryan Park said.

“Actions speak louder than words,and while Nationals Leader John Barilaro talks a big game his actions show he has consistently supported Sydney stadiums over funding for regional NSW. “Unlike the Nationals, who have let the regions down for eight long years, Labor has released a raft of positive policies for country families and businesses.”

Mr Allan Parker partnered with The Land to give his time and help as a facilitator of the individual community revitalisation project meetings.

“We will be equipping the communities to act on what the community can do, not wait for politicians to do,” Mr Parker said.

“It’s about exploring innovation and resulting in new goals and new ways to network together in the community.

“We’re trying to get community conversation to take place, not another community committee meeting,” he said, to articulate the difference in how this process would work compared to other community meeting experiences people are likely to have had.

It would therefore be a gathering, rather than a meeting, run as an informal conversation that also crosses generational boundaries.

Allan Parker is a Behavioural Scientist, and international negotiator. He is the author of the best-selling book Switch on your Brain, and the Negotiator’s Toolkit.

Allan is the recipient of two National Speakers Association of Australia Awards including the Nevin Award, Australia’s highest Professional Speaker’s Award.

New Doppler radar sites soon to head West A NSW Farmers’ proposal to improve real-time weather observation in western NSW is a step closer today, with the NSW Government signing a $24.4 million contract to deliver three new Doppler radar sites.

NSW Farmers highlighted the need for Doppler radar weather stations in June 2017 for areas currently without a service to assist in making critical time sensitive decisions in farm management, particularly regarding when to plant, spray, apply fertiliser or move livestock.

The three new Doppler radars will provide real-time estimated rainfall volume data as well as wind speed and direction observations in radar ‘black holes’ like the Orana region.

NSW Farmers’ President James Jackson said strategic investment into Doppler radar infrastructure will enable farmers to make more informed management decisions, ensuring farm inputs are applied more efficiently and effectively.

“The $24.4m investment in three Doppler radars will enable significantly improved day-to-day on-farm management, and improve farmers’ access to finance and insurance, by reducing risks associated with weather and climate,” Mr Jackson said.

“For the broader community, this technology will also result in improved protection of lives and livelihoods, particularly when confronted with fires, storms and floods,” Mr Jackson said.

Mr Jackson said the contract signing marked a significant step forward for the delivery of the three new radars.

“The NSW agricultural sector contributes over $14.5 billion annually to the economy, and generates over $6 billion in exports. With improved tools, such as these new radars, we can be confident of growing this output and continuing to strengthen rural and regional economies.”

The Molong community is invited to come along to a free public forum on dementia, including what help is available and how to support a person living with dementia or memory loss.

The forum will be held on Monday 11 March from 2:30-4pm at Molong Library (free afternoon tea provided).

Guest speaker is Jenny Roberts from Dementia Australia who will bring the Dementia Australia ‘Memory Van’, a mobile service that aims to increase awareness of dementia in the community and highlight the importance of brain health and dementia risk reduction.

Key topics include Dementia Australia’s services and other supports available in the region, memory changes, what is dementia, and caring for people with dementia.

Researcher Dr Kristina Gottschall from the University of Newcastle’s Centre for Rural and Remote Mental Health (CRRMH) will also share information about The Virtual Dementia Friendly Rural Communities (Verily Connect) project, a $1.7 million project designed by the CRRMH and the John Richards Centre for Rural Ageing at La Trobe University.

Verily Connect is trialling online technologies to support carers of people living with dementia in 12 rural communities across Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia and is looking for carers as well as volunteers to help

the carers use the online technologies.

In addition to Nyngan, communities taking part in the trial include Edenhope, Warracknabeal, Heathcote, Horsham, Robinvale, Kooweerup, Kyneton, and Mansfield in Victoria, Molong in NSW and Victor Harbor and Riverland in SA. Kristina will showcase the main online technologies including a specially designed app and a free, easy to use online face-to-face meeting portal.

“We are really encouraging carers of people living with dementia to have a go at the online technologies, especially if they don’t feel comfortable with computers, iPads or Smart Phones.

“It is critical we get feedback about this technology so we can help support those who are carers and make caring feel less isolated,” Kristina said.

“We hope to get many carers, volunteers and support services in the Nyngan region involved in the trial as possible,” she said.

Federal Drought Communities Program benefits Cabonne to tune of $1 million

Ten projects in the Cabonne Shire will share in $1 million delivered through the Federal Government’s Drought Communities Program.

Federal Member for Calare, Andrew Gee said the Drought Communities Program supports communities in the most drought-affected regions of Australia and builds on more than $7 billion of Federal Government drought support measures.

“The important thing about the Drought Communities Program is that it recognises the severe impact the drought is not only having on the farms, but also in our towns and villages. This major injection of federal funds is designed to assist our farmers, towns and surrounding regions get through what is the worst drought in living memory,” Mr Gee said.

“I’d like to congratulate Cabonne Council and the community on identifying projects which will stimulate local community spending by using local resources, businesses, suppliers and workers. These projects will also provide longlasting benefits to the Cabonne Shire.

“The only drought-breaker is rain, so we need to continue doing all we can to ensure these communities have the support they need to make it through these tough times.”

Mayor of Cabonne Shire, Cr Kevin Beatty thanked the Federal Government for making the drought funding available.

“This will assist our Local Government Area as a whole, stimulating business and employment, particularly for those who have suffered a downturn because of the drought,” Cr

Beatty said.

“Not only will this funding boost local employment and purchases, but it will provide us with new infrastructure and improvements to community facilities that will provide ongoing benefits for years to come.”

The following projects will be funded under the Drought Communities Program in the Cabonne Shire: · Upgrades across recreational facilities including parks, sporting grounds and reserves; · Installation of a new watering system at Jack Huxley Oval in Manildra; · Upgrades to the watering system and perimeter fence of Dean Park Recreation Ground in Cudal; · Upgrades to the power supply at the Dr Andrew Ross Memorial Recreation Ground in Molong; · Construction of water filling stations at Manildra, Eugowra and Canowindra; · Improvements to the Tennis Clubhouse at the Manildra Recreation Ground; · Outdoor improvements to Cumnock Village Preschool; · Upgrade and installation of rabbit-proof fencing at cemeteries in Molong, Toogong, Garra, Cumnock, Canowindra and Cudal; · Implement water sustainability measures at Cumnock Public School; and · Enhance and improve Men’s Sheds across Cabonne.

Chance for Orange voters to hear firsthand from State election hopefuls Voters will be able to hear from candidates first-hand and ask their own questions at a community forum being organised by Orange City Council next week.

Orange Mayor Cr Reg Kidd said the ‘Pizza with the Pollies’ forum is being held in the Civic Centre council chambers at 6pm Friday 1 March, three weeks out from the NSW election.

“Last year the council decided to arrange an opportunity to hear from all candidates in the lead up to the election,” Cr Reg Kidd said. “Now we know who the candidates are, the opportunity to open up the event to any interested community members has been organised.”

“All five of the candidates we know about so far have agreed to be a part of the event, and local community leader Jamie Newman will be there to chair the forum and act as MC. There’ll be a brief opportunity for each candidate to speak before it’s opened up for questions. If there are new candidates announced before Friday 1 March, they’ll be welcome.

“Other central west centres have staged open community forums to hear from candidates,but it’s been a while since this has been tried in Orange.

“Often voters are having to make up their mind based on a

few snippets of media reporting. We want to give people the chance to ask the questions that are important to them, and to get public answers.

“It’s a crucial part of the democratic process for every voter to be as informed as they can.

“In the US, there’s a long-held tradition of events like this called ‘Town Hall meetings’ and they’re a regular part of the electoral cycle, not just during election campaigns. As well as asking questions, events like this can be a good way for candidates to find out what are the important issues for local residents.

“We want to make the event as accessible as we can, so there’ll be free pizza on-offer while we’re listening to the questions and answers. Refreshments will also be available.

Why not start your weekend by coming to ‘Pizza with the Pollies’.

“We’ve been able to live-stream council meetings for a while now, and that’s proving popular, particularly when there’s a major issue up for debate. The YouTube livestream of Tuesday’s meeting attracted 343 views. We’ll be looking to live stream the candidates’ forum on the night so it can be opened up to an even wider audience.”

It will be a ‘no guts - no story’ if the Molong community fails to RSVP to The Land (newspaper) and government combined initiative to next Monday night’s ‘Next Crop’ Forum at the Molong Community Hall (Monday 4 March commencing at 6.00 p.m.

In fact, this could be the end of positive community building and development ‘anything’ in Molong if this amazing opportunity (only made available to Molong, Yass, Glen Innes and Tooraweenah) fails to happen in Molong due to what seems to be community ‘disinterest’.

Today, only 12 people have positively responded to the RSVP and the offer to provide what is a sensational idea and new approach in ‘getting it done’. A poor response given that the workshop is due to happen in 5 days. A poor response from a population of some 2,000 residents.

Understandably, some residents are saying ... we have workshopped, met, contributed ideas, and tried to help ... and nothing happens.

I totally agree with this response and the dreaded thought of “here we go again”.

The very reason I have taken on the role of putting together the base information to move the Molong Railway Station and Molong Silos Art Trail ahead. A new approach which I am leading to provide the ‘freedom’ of a resident being able to work alone, in their own way, to bring results on the ground - quicker - for these two long talked about projects.

The Land ‘Next Crop’ Forum is not about soil, plants, crops, animals. Although these will be factored in as a town of “who we are”.

Rather the forum sets out to unearth good ideas of how rural communities (i.e. these four) could be more successful using their existing resources and capabilities- which Molong has.

Given the number of people in the four towns constantly asking “what’s next?” - The Land looked for ideas around how to step up the concept from simply a discussion platform that unearthed good ideas, to something that could enable communities to drive their own change from the grass roots level.

As creative thinkers, loyal and caring residents, each and everyone of us (of all ages) have good ideas, and we can all contribute as a community capable of driving their own change - from the grass roots level.

It is our local residents - from every house, , townhouse, flat, property, farming area, school, church, orchard, business, sporting club who understand where they live, entertain, play sport, shop ... where they live spirtually ... who understand the opportunities which sit in front of Molong.

Jaded by disappointment, frustration, confusion, annoyance, anger ... and watching the very slow process of getting things done in town and district - has sent residents back into their homes, properties, businesses, schools, churches etc. - to not participate in community development and building. This problem is entirely understandable.

I see next Monday night’s The Land “Next Crop” forum as the best, most achievable opportunity for Molong and district (to date) to finally get things moving.

We cannot rely solely on Cabonne Council, MAG (Molong Advancement Group), growMOLONG, Rotary or Sporting Clubs to brings results to benefit families, seniors, children, youth, the disabled, farmers, property owners, schools etc.

The Land, supported by Governments (who also can’t be relied on solely) at all levels, have come up with what could well be ‘the last chance’ for the Molong and district community to get the runs on the ground.

It is up to us now, as residents - to get it right.

Molong Railway Station “I’m looking for ideas (yours)”

How many rural towns can boast a magnificent 1800’s designed and built railway station located in the town centre above a highway that brings some 2000 - 3,000 vehicles past each day on the busy Mitchell Highway?

Well, Molong can (boast) with the fabulous Molong Railway Station sited in the best possible location - central to everything large empty spaces - with a verandah covered platform (now fenced for community safety).

Overlooking the Parkes/Sydney railway line where the Indian Pacific (Sydney to Perth and return passenger train) - and a growing number of XPT passenger services, good trains - the station, whilst closed in the 1970’s - still sees plenty of track activity.

The platform also overlooks the tree lined Molong Creek - where shady trees of various varieties stand and have stood, majestically, for countless years as part of Molong’s history.

I asked at a recent community meeting for permission if I could work on both the railway station project and the Molong Silos project to get the projects moving faster - and to arrive at feasible and affordable outcomes for us to consider.

No objections - Great!

Being a railway kid from birth - and now resident of the Gatekeeper’s Cottage once again in my lifetime (I grew up there, my mum and dad owned the cottage for some 50 years of its 150 year old history) - I would love to see the railway station open again to the community.

'Always remember to love one other' Saint Mary McKillop (1888)

Many will remember Sister Kath English who spent many years at St Lawrence O'Toole Parish in Molong.

Sr Kath was a much loved and respected member of the congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Sacred Heart.

Sr. Kath passed away at Perthville on 6 February 2019 after giving her life to the care of others and to spiritual teachings.

She will be remembered especially for her contribution to education in the Diocese.

(Above) Sr Kath was a special guest at the Manildra Royal Hotel celebration in December 2015 where she opened the newly restored balcony.

Sr Kath, the daughter of a former publican of the hotel, commented at the time how she and her sisters, Aileen and Maria, as babies and toddlers, 'learnt to crawl and walk on the old verandah' (which had been removed some 39 years before).

Dr Bradfield’s ghost rises once more

It’s election time again and the promises are flying thick and fast.

The NSW Deputy Premier, Hon. John Barilaro, mp (National Party), this week announced that the NSW Coalition Government would push the Federal Government to invest in a new Bradfield Scheme. Apparently the Deputy PM is all for it. So what is the Bradfield Scheme??

The Bradfield Scheme was a 1938 proposal for a water diversion and inland irrigation scheme designed to irrigate and drought-proof a large part of western Queensland, as well as large areas of South Australia.

It was devised by Queenslander Dr John Bradfield (1867–1943), a who also designed the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Brisbane’s Story Bridge Even at the time, some thought the plan lacked scientific justification, was too expensive, and overly optimistic.

Bradfield’s proposal called for large pipes, tunnels, pumps and dams, and involved diverting water from the upper reaches of the Tully, Herbert and Burdekin rivers. Fed by the Wet Season monsoon, these rivers flow east to the Coral Sea. It was proposed that the water would enter the Thomson River on the western side of the Great Dividing Range and eventually flow south west to Lake Eyre. An alternative plan was to divert water into the Flinders River.

There have been no attempts to implement the scheme, but like high-speed rail and the southnorth railway, it has had more resurrections than Australia has had PMs. The water was expected to provide irrigation for more than 7,800km2 of agricultural land in Queensland and reduce the massive natural erosion problems in the central areas of the state.

Proponents of the scheme say it could generate 370MW of electricity and have the potential to double that amount. It has also been claimed that controlling and reducing the flow of northern rivers into the ocean may benefit the Great Barrier Reef as fresh water causes coral bleaching, and the excess nutrients in the rivers from coastal farming and development support algal growth that can harm the reef.

While admitting that nutrient runoff is a problem for the Reef, it has coped with freshwater inundation for millennia, and the

It has been claimed that the extra water and vegetation in the interior may then produce changes to the climate of Australia, however various studies have concluded that this is unlikely.

It is also possible that large-scale clearing for irrigated crops and pasture would negate the cooling effect of both water and crops.

Some argue that it may increase the rainfall in areas of southern Queensland and northern New South Wales, and this increase could perhaps drought-proof eastern Queensland, with resulting higher inflows to the Murray–Darling system.

These claims have not been supported.

Some are of the opinion that a full Lake Eyre would moderate the air temperature in the basin by the absorption of sunlight by the water instead of heat radiation from dry land into the air.

No evidence to support the theory that an inland sea would increase rainfall has ever been produced, nor have any of the other claims been supported.

Evaporation from Lake Eyre would indeed fall as rain, but there is no telling where – or when – that rain might fall – perhaps on the Great Divide or out over the Tasman Sea. Bradfield’s scheme and others like it have been criticised because they are not practical. Bradfield’s scheme has been criticised on the grounds that the high capital- and ongoing running-costs would make the project uneconomic.

Bradfield’s elevation measurements were taken with a barometer, leading to inaccuracies in land heights and mistakes in the proposal.

In most cases, no flow record of the rivers was available to Bradfield, so he used an empirical formula that assumed 33 per cent of the water flow would be lost to evaporation and seepage. The estimated water available for the scheme was 114 cu.m/sec.

The extreme evaporation rate in the interior is another negative factor. No clear evidence has been provided that the amount of water supplied will exceed the evaporation rate.

The reduction in river discharge to the Great Barrier Reef Lagoon would probably affect coastal fisheries by reducing the supply of terrestrial organic matter to the coastal and estuarine environment.

Then there is the danger of introducing unwelcome organisms into new areas. The spectre of

cane toads spreading into Cooper Creek and the Murray–Darling Basin should be enough to give any politician nightmares. As the country warms, they will move ever further south.

In 1947, W.H.R. Nimmo, conducted a critical review of the scheme. He proved that Bradfield’s estimates of the amount of water available from the easterly flowing rivers were about two and half times greater than it actually was.

The error was attributed to the fact that the methodology used to calculate flow estimates was based on German rivers, where the average temperature was much less than in northern Australia.

Another barrier to any such scheme is amply illustrated by the mess that has been made of the socalled management of Australia’s water resources to date – and for that you need look no further than the Murray–Darling Basin.

A grazier along the Darling once wrote: “If there’s any water anywhere, cotton suddenly needs it.” I would argue that even if Bradfield’s idea was practical, it wouldn’t be long before the water was over-allocated and the country would be back where it started – only we’d be a massive amount out of pocket.

Politicians and their backers have seen the crushing of many good intentions. In the early days of railway construction, every politician wanted a line to pass through his electorate and we’re still recovering from that.

If you’ve got this far, you’re probably thinking: “Hang on; last week he was bashing our ears about grand schemes and vision,” and of course you’d be right. But grand schemes need to have some basis in reality.

The Snowy Mountains Scheme was a magnificent thing in its day and in many ways helped lay the foundations for our wonderful, multicultural society, but it had its unforeseen side effects and needed modification.

Grand, politically motivated construction projects need to be more than just castles in the air.

Goyder’s Line

When during the 19th century the US population was rapidly expanding westward, there was a widespread belief that “rain followed the plough” a belief that eventually culminated in the Dust Bowl (see last week’s Express).

In 1865, South Australia’s government surveyor, George Goyder, was asked to map the boundary between areas that experienced good rainfall and the more arid lands.

He covered 3200km on horseback to produce a map showing a line above which drought was more likely and where the land was better suited to grazing. It became known as “Goyder’s Line”.

In that same year, good rains led farmers to ignore the survey and cross the line.

This happened again in the few good years, but the end result was abandoned farms, dashed hopes and the derelict stone houses that still dot the landscape today.

Goyder proved that rain and ploughs have no connection and in December 2015, climate scientist Peter Hayman said that the current climate trend would shift Goyder’s Line further south.

Numbers in the yarding’s are increasing with the effect of the dry conditions over both cattle and sheep. For those how are starting to implement there destocking or number reductions, it might be a good to make a trip to your local sale yards to compare your stock with what’s on offer, this will also give you a fair idea of values in your stock to help make those tuff decisions.

CTLX sheep and lamb report for 20/2/19

Lamb numbers increased with agents yarding 8600 Sheep numbers increased with agents yarding 4900 Numbers increased this week with an extra 5780 lambs and 2120 extra mutton.

It was a good quality yarding with good runs of shorn trade lambs, along with a few pens of heavy weights. There was also a good supply of lambs to suit the restockers.

Light weight lambs to the processors were $5 easier, while trade lambs were firm to cheaper, lambs to restockers were $10 dearer also, and heavy lambs were firm.

Mutton were $4 to $8 cheaper, mutton worked out to be 375 to 430c/kg cwt.

Numbers increased by 760 with agents yarding 2230. A pretty good quality yarded with some good numbers cows along with young cattle to suit feeders and trade buyers. Grown heifers were well supplied, along with a few pens of grown steers.

Young cattle to the trade were 10c cheaper, feeder steers and heifers were 2c to 5c cheaper. Young restocker cattle were cheaper. Grown steers were 5c dearer, gown heifers were firm, and plain

conditioned light cows were 3c dearer, while finished heavy cows were 6c to 9c cheaper.

Royal Molong Golfer receives help from above Now in his golden years, a local golfer decided to fulfil his lifelong ambition to play the 8th hole at the Royal Molong exactly the way he had seen the pros do.

The pros drive the ball out over the course and never seem to lose the ball. It was something the local golfer had tried hundreds of times without success. His ball had always fallen either short or long - lost over the paddocks, fence or amongst the trees never to be found again.

Because of this, the thrifty golfer never used a new ball on this particular hole. He always picked one that had a cut or a nick, as did many other "average" golfers when negotiating very challenging holes.

We hear a few weeks ago the Royal Molong golfer (name suppressed) decided to really take on this hole - but still he teed off with an old, cut ball - and said a silent prayer.

Before he could hit the ball,

a powerful voice from above seemed to boom out from the fluffy white clouds, saying: "Wait! Replace that old ball with a brand new one."

The golfer complied, although with some slight misgivings, despite the fact that this same force seemed to be implying that he was going to finally achieve his lifelong ambition.

As he stepped up to the tee once more, the voice came down again: "Wait. Step back. Take a practice swing."

So he stepped back and took a practice swing, certain now that this heavenly force was going to make his dream come true.

The voice boomed out again: "Take another practice swing."

Dutifully, he did. He stopped expectantly and waited ...

A long silence followed ...

Then the voice again: "Use the old ball"

Cudal and Millthorpe Semi Final Saturday The completion of the Oilsplus regular rounds will see Millthorpe and Cudal play the Major Semi Final @ the Rec this Saturday. The winner of this game will play Minor Premiers Country who will have the week off. Molong Bowlers and Molong Magpies have finished 4th & 5th respectively and miss the finals series.

At the REC on Saturday Magpies last game of the season against Country pretty much reflected their season when they were thrashed by six wickets. Batting first Magpies were all out for an embarrassing 44. Not one of their batsmen reaching double figures. Country passed Magpies total with four wickets down. Not an ideal preparation for Country whose next game will be the Grand Final on 9 March. We might just leave it at that.

The game at Millthorpe with the home team against Molong Bowlers was huge. The winner would claim 2nd place but the loser eliminated from finals contention. The home team Batted first and recorded 7 for 176 after 40 overs. Millthorpe's most consistent batsman Will Oldham, continued on scoring 43, however it was veteran Peter Heller who top scored with 52. other batsmen got starts but failed to build an innings of any note.

Once again sundries caused Bowlers grief with 19 recorded. Luke Miller was the best for Bowlers taking 2 for 42 & Ed Twiss 2 for 20. In reply Bowlers got their run chase off to a reasonable start with top order batsman Andrew Drady (28) and NSW Veteran David Hobbs (44) leading the way looking good at the drinks break at 1/90.

However after these two were dismissed other batsman came and went in quick fashion leaving veteran Rohan Wilson stranded 14no when the were all out for 149 27 short of Millthorpe's total.

The absence of batsman Matt Tink hurting Bowlers significantly.

Congratulations to Milltorpe. 2nd on the ladder in their first season in the Oilsplus Competition.

Even more remarkable considering they lost their first 5 games.

FINAL LADDER: Country 82; Millthorpe 60; Cudal 58; Bowlers 55; Magpies 44 Semi Final Cudal v Millthorpe This should be a great game between two evenly matched teams. They have both recorded wins against each other so it's anyone's guess who will get up in this match.

Millthorpe will rely heavily on Will Oldham who has been their most consistent batsman. If he goes cheaply, pressure will mount on the rest of the top order. James Milner, Tim Low and co will need to bat well against a very strong Cudal attack lead by Steve Fairly, Jock Hough and Scotty Barrett. Cudal have named a strong team, the only weakness appears to be Lee Cornish who offers nothing except the odd sledge.

Luke Wood, Andrew Smith, Chris Douglas, Jock Hough, Steve Fairley & Scott Barrett lead a very strong batting line up. Millthorpe have a good bowling attack and will rely on P Joyce to lead the way as he has all season. Should be beauty, my tip, Cudal's finals experience will see them through to a comfortable win.

GRINSTEAD CUP A strong Molong team traveled to Parkes on Sunday to compete for the Grinstaed Cup. Unfortunately Molong coudln't compete with the very strong Parkes tweam. The home team recording 234 and Molong in reply all out for a disappointing 100.
