Molong Show Key regional returns projects rocked by funding cut - Gee
Several major infrastructure projects in the Central West are now in a state of flux following the axing of two regional funding programs by the new government. On the eve of the October Budget, the new government binned the Building Better Regions Fund (BBRF) and the Community Development Grants program, leaving many local councils and community groups with live applications in the lurch. Shadow Minister for Regional Development and Member for Calare, Andrew Gee, said the decision will mean some key regional projects may never see the light of day. “The new government has sent shockwaves through country communities,” said Mr Gee. “The decision by the new government to bump off the BBRF and cull the Community Development Grants program will devastate many projects in the pipeline across regional Australia. “Our country communities, which feed and fuel our nation’s cities and make a crucial contribution to the prosperity of our nation, deserve their fair share of federal funding. “Bathurst Regional Council’s top infrastructure project is a much-needed multi-storey car park linking the Bathurst RSL Club and the proposed new medical centre in the Bathurst CBD. “The current outdoor car park only holds 330 vehicles, while the new five-level car park would cater for almost three times as many, providing critical parking for doctors, nurses, staff and patients at the new medical centre while freeing up spaces for visitors to the RSL and nearby businesses. “The previous Coalition Government secured $15 million for the project in the March 2022 budget through the Community Development Grants program to get it done. “That money had been allocated and was ready to go. It’s now been snatched away to fund projects in government seats.

“In the same way, the previous Coalition Government secured a further $5 million through the Community Development Grants program to start Stage 2 of the Dixons Long Point Crossing project, taking the total support for the gamechanging development to $34.8 million. “The additional $5 million in funding would have gone towards sealing and upgrading roads beyond the immediate approaches to the crossing, creating a safe and smooth journey to and from the bridge. “The additional funding needed for the Dixons Long Point project will now have to come from other programs such as Roads of Strategic Importance. Unfortunately, there is no guarantee that fund will survive the budget either. “The new government’s decision to bin the Community Development Grants program is a heavy blow to critical projects like these, that have significant benefit to our country communities. “For years, the Building Better Regions Fund did exactly as the name says – it backed projects in the bush that created jobs, drove economic growth and helped regions thrive. It has funded everything from domestic violence refuges to community halls, and streetscape upgrades to regional sporting grounds. (Cont. The Building Better Regions Fund (BBRF) is one program which has made a huge range of worthwhile projects possible across our region but its future is in doubt. A few projects funded through the BBRF program in our region include: ● $1.9 million for Blayney CentrePoint Sports and Leisure Facility Upgrade ● $2.15 million to strengthen the postcardappeal of Canowindra and Molong’s main streets ● $1.9 million for The Orchard in Orange – a women and children's domestic and family violence centre ● $308,175 to construct an Information and ONLY Centre $0.75 c Education at the Orange an issue Field Days site. ● $985,000 for Eugowra Community Centre at the showground
