Molong turning pink next week See page 4 Molong Show Cabonne Jessica is 2019 Showgirl Mayor returned unopposed but new Deputy elected Cabonne Mayor Kevin Beatty was re-elected unopposed today, but the Council has a new Deputy Mayor.

Cr Jamie Jones was elected the Deputy after defeating the incumbent Cr Anthony Durkin in a ballot.

Cr Beatty thanked Cr Durkin for the work he did as Deputy Mayor and said that with the support of Cr Durkin and his fellow councillors, Cabonne Council had achieved “a hell of a lot” during the past two years.

“We’ve worked together well and have developed into a very good Council that that can be proud of what we have done and what it is to come,” he said.

Cr Beatty said he was particularly satisfied that Council had achieved NSW Government funding to complete the Puzzle Flat Creek flood levee at Eugowra and had allocated money from its own budget to the project.

“We’ve also secured State Government funding to build a new library and community centre at Molong, which will be one of the most exciting projects we’ve undertaken.”

Dubbo slapped with harsher water restrictions

Dubbo will move to level-three water restrictions next week as shortages bite hard in the western NSW town.

Last night the council voted to tighten limits, as leveltwo restrictions have done little to curb water use, with data showing residents exceeded the stipulated levels.

Under level three, all use of sprinklers and washdown of hard surfaces is banned. Handheld hoses can only be used for 15 minutes per property for a two-hour block in the evening.

Council has called on residents to comply or face onthe-spot penalties.

Level-four restrictions will be imposed in Dubbo from November if there is no rain.

Water crisis; Dubbo Regional Council CEO pushes for pipeline to Wellington

The development of a “shovel-ready” plan for a water pipeline running from Dubbo to Wellington is being recommended to Dubbo Regional Council (DRC) by its chief executive officer (CEO) Michael McMahon.

He also suggests the council ask the state government to help pay for it.

In a water security strategy report to Monday night’s council meeting, Mr McMahon tells of Wellington’s “full reliance” on river water in the worst drought on record.

Mr McMahon said a proposal to construct a pipeline between Wellington and Burrendong Dam was being assessed to meet the town’s immediate water supply needs, subject to talks with WaterNSW. At the same time he is promoting the extension of the water pipeline now running from Dubbo to Wongarbon.

Crash closed Mitchell Highway in both directions A serious two car crash forced the closure of the Mitchell Highway in both directions at Bakers Swamp 30 kilometres south of Wellington for three hours on Sunday.

“The Mitchell Highway has reopened in both directions at Bakers Swamp following a serious two car crash,” a Transport Management Centre spokesperson said.

It’s showtime in Canowindra once again

Get ready for cotton candy and dagwood dogs as the Canowindra Show gets underway this Friday from 9am.

While all the regular show sections will be on display, Canowindra Show President, Stewart Gavin, was pleased to highlight the new events in this year’s line up.

“We have some new events going on this year with the ute competition, a dog high jump and a motorised esky race,” he said.

“We’ll have a mechanical bull with the money raised going back to the show and our fireworks will be back with a fresh new display.

“These are events our members have seen around, I know a fair few shows have dog high jumps now.

“There’s been a fair bit of interest in them and decent number of entries in them already, but we’ll still have our regular sections like prime lamb and sports shearing.

“The entry numbers have been good in those sections as well, the lambs have a fair bit of interest and the horse events are going to have a number of participants,” he said.

Attendees can check out the ute competition on Friday night at 6.30pm and the dog high jump 10.30am on Saturday.

NSW drought: Pools will be open and filled during the drought

WATER conservation might be at a critical level, but Central West councils say committing millions of litres of the precious resource to town swimming pools is vital.

Tough water restrictions are in place across much of the region and in some towns council-owned pools have been emptied and refilled.

A Cabonne Council spokesman said the water from seven town pools would be drained during spring and then refilled prior to re-opening later this season.

“Council needs to balance the responsible use of water with the fact that these swimming pools are an important part of the social fabric of

our towns and villages and a sanctuary for many people feeling the effects of this terrible drought,” he said.

The spokesman said water drained from the pools was used for road building works across the local government area.

ARG promises to bring international flavour to Mount’s new event

A slew of international drivers have signaled their interest in racing at Mount Panorama’s newest event.

It was announced last week that the Australian Racing Group (ARG) was successful in its bid to host the fifth major motor sport event at the iconic circuit.

The inaugural event is set to be held in December, 2020 and ARG’s executive director, Matt Braid, said planning was already under way.

The event will run for at least three days, but possibly four or more.

It will feature five different categories of racing, some of which have never been seen at Mount Panorama before.

It also signals the return of open-wheel racing to the Mountain with the inclusion of the S5000 series.

“They’ll be very spectacular. It is the first time highpowered open-wheelers have been racing at Bathurst for many years,” Mr Braid said.

Prisons to close: Jails in Central West could have an increase in inmates

FOUR jails across the state might be shutting down, but Corrective Services NSW will not confirm how many of the 157 impacted inmates could be coming to the Central West.

Jails in Brewarrina, Ivanhoe, Illawarra and Berrima will close within 12 months, Corrective Services NSW confirmed this week.

The closures will impact 157 inmates and 114 staff.’

Corrective Services NSW, however, would not confirm if any of these inmates would be moved to the region’s jails in Bathurst, Kirkconnell, Lithgow, Shooters Hill and Wellington.

“Inmates will be transferred to other prisons across the state,” a spokeswoman said.

The union for corrections staff, the Public Services Association (PSA), will soon be visiting affected staff in the jails set to close.

Small Town Harmonies

A new social group - with a difference - has been going from strength to strength.

Pete Jones reports..........

Small Town Harmonies is a recently formed pop choir based in Molong. We invite people from the Cabonne area to come join us. Our members range in age from 15 to 70+ and are made up of people who love to sing for the joy of singing. The group also provides a social outlet for people to make new friends and connections.

You don’t have to be a great singer. There are NO auditions. We welcome people of all singing abilities. We are looking for people who love to sing in the shower, the car, at work or while doing the housework. It is all about loving to sing and not necessarily being a fantastic singer. We cover songs from all genres and eras and choir members are encouraged to suggest the songs

they would like to sing.

The choir is directed by Pete Jones who studied music at City University, London, He enjoys rehearsing the group and seeing the confidence of the singers grow each week.

“Our progress since the first rather chaotic rehearsal has been fantastic. We are always trying new songs and different ways of rehearsing - it’s a great feeling when it all comes together.”

The choir is on break for the school holidays but we will be starting again on Thursday 17th October.

New teams as bumper cricket season awaits The Molong Oilsplus Senior Cricket season kicks off soon.

Remarkably the upcoming season will have seven teams competing. In addition to newcomers Milthorpe who came on board last season we have Lyndhurst and Canowindra joining the Molong Cricket Association.

After many years Canowindra will leave the very strong Cowra Competition and join the Molong Association. Wonderful news for Molong Cricket as our competition now boasts more teams than nearby Orange.

This is a wonderful turnaround for cricket in Cabbone as it was only two years ago that the competition was on the verge of folding due to lack of teams and players.

Many hours of negotiating and meetings have lead to the new teams coming on board.

They will join stalwart teams Country, Cudal, Molong Magpies and Molong All Stars (formerly Bowlers).

Milthorpe will look to go one better than last season when they were runners up in the Grand Final. The new look Allstars have recruited well but will need David Hobbs to give up playing for NSW and come home if they are to be any chance.

Cudal are always competitive and Magpies will be looking to emulate the wonderful efforts of the Magpies Hockey teams and win when no one gave them a chance.

Magpies have been spotted training in the winter months and have allrounder superstar Brett Johnson on a strict nicotine and sugar diet.

Brett's amazing transition has him down to just a dozen cigars and half a keg of coke a day.

Watch for Brett to have a big season.

The double white continuous line markings in Bank street are seet to remain for the time being following the Cabonne Local Traffic Committee’s review and decision to leave the status quo.

The Committee has however recommended that Cabonne council conduct community consultation to install 40km High Pedestrian Activity signs in Bank street Molong, prior to writing to Roads and Maritime Services for speed review.

The Traffic Committee (comprising representatives from RMS, Police and Council) reviewed the matter following representation from the local growMolong association which said: “Our members questioned the unexplainable need for double unbroken centre road lines in our business block. The appearance of this new traffic feature was a surprise to local citizens and business people. Concern was expressed over the negative impact it has had on businesses in the CBD. Also the introduction of this traffic restriction has created more risk to the public than it achieves.

“Elderly drivers have to either enter or leave the business block via the busy highway, increasing the risk of having an accident with highway traffic travelling at higher speeds.

“Many tourists turn into Bank Street from the Highway and start looking for a parking spot. If they

cannot get one on that side of the road, they are back at the highway and turn to continue their journey and Molong misses out on their business.

The lines have long been a bone of contention.

Last year local police told the Express that they were always asked about the double white lines down Bank Street. Police advised that “these lines were put in for two reasons. First, to stop people driving on to the wrong side of the road to overtake a parking vehicle.

Second, they were put there to stop people crossing over both lanes of traffic to exit a parking space. There is always a high amount of vehicular and pedestrian traffic along this stretch of road. The lines were put there to make it safer for everyone.”

As both sides of Bank Street has continued to thrive, particularly following the 2005 flood, the street is certainly showing the signs of a busy “working town”.

One of the key drivers for the white lines was the need for a traffic calming measure - however the installation of a raised pedestrian crossing, which would have greatly ameliorated the problem was rejected by locals in a survey conducted in 2012 (well, at least by the majority of those who spoke up).

A 40k pedestrian high activity limit combined with a calming crossing might help the case.

Otherwise the lines will stay.

Master Plans for Molong Rec Ground, Showround/ Golf Course and Hunter Caldwell Reserve to be prepared Cabonne Council has agreed to contribute funds to engage suitably qualified consultants to develop three master plans, incorporating Molong Recreation Ground, Molong Showground/Golf Course and Hunter Caldwell Park.

The consultants will actively engage the community in development of the plans at public meetings expected to be held in November.

The Molong Advancement Group is to carry the preparation of the plans forward with a $5,500 cash contribution of its own, supported by a $1,981 contribution from Cabonnes Councils Community Facilitation Fund.

The driving force behind development of the plans is the need for communities and Councils applying for the multitude of Federal and State Government grants for projects to be on the front foot - being able to demonstrate community support for grant projects and advanced planning and specifications (i.e. “shovel ready”) Local associations and sporting groups paarticularly will need to

be involved in the consultation exercise.

Cabonne Council has also approved other Community Facilitation Fund allocations for: Cumnock Progress Association.

Community Lending Library House - $600.

All Saints Anglican Church Canowindra. Replacement of water service delivery line to All Saints buildings - $1,750.

Manildra MADIA. Water tank and sprinkler system in Montana Park - $5,033 Molong Historical Society Inc. Repairs & Maintenance to Front Veranda - $15,000.

Council will conduct a further round of Community Assistance Program funding in the second half of the 2019-2020 financial year.

Grants are allocated on a 50:50 basis, but communities can provide their half of the funding through voluntary labour or in-kind contributions.

Nominations sought for Cabonne Australia Day awards

Nominations are being sought for Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year and Community Group of the Year awards in the various towns and villages within Cabonne Shire, with the winners to be announced on Australia Day next year.

Mayor Kevin Beatty said this was a perfect opportunity to recognise the work of worthy volunteers within the community and he urged as many people as possible to nominate someone who should be honoured.

In addition to the Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year and Community Group of the Year, there will be two shire-wide awards for the Environmental Champion of Year, which can be a group or individual, and Sportsperson of the Year.

Nominations close on Friday 4 October 2019, with the winners to be announced at Australia Day celebrations throughout the Shire on 26 January 2019.

Cabonne’s Australia Day ambassador and official party will attend celebrations at Mullion Creek, Cargo and Canowindra.

Council representatives will also attend award presentations at Borenore/Nashdale, Cudal, Cumnock, Eugowra, Manildra, Molong and Yeoval.

An event that started as a way for the Spring Hill Activities Group to raise the profile of the Village, this event will be held at the Recreation Ground on Whiley Road. Gold coin donation at the gate.

A day orienteered for all car, truck and bike enthusiast - from vintage to current model vehicles along with a family feel with lots of areas to run around, jumping castles and face-painting in Spring Hill Recreation Ground.

A coffee van, barbeque and bar will be available at the Recreation Ground. Please note only cash, no EFTPOS facilities will be available on the day.

Trophies will be voted by public for best car, best bike and best truck. A $5 entry per vehicle on the day.

Remembering William Thomas Hoswell ( Tom ).

Ross sent us this memory of Tom, late of Molong & Orange.

Tom was born on the 4th December, 1966 to parents William Young and Betty Jane ( Moriarty ) Hoswell and passed away on the 7th September, 2019 at the Intensive Care Unit of Orange Health Service at the age of 52.

Tom was joined by 2 Sisters Mary Moore and Ann Milne. He did part of his Education at Eugowra Central School and completed this at Forbes High School where at both Schools he made many lifelong friends. In 1992 he undertook and completed his Nurse Training at the old Prince Henry Hospital at Little Bay in Sydney. Following the closure of Prince Henry, he then worked in the Renal Unit of Prince of Wales Hospital at Randwick also in Sydney. He enjoyed his work and sharing digs at Maroubra Junction with Dawn Barclay for 17 years who he thought the world of up until his passing. Poor Dawn copped many bad jokes and tormenting in good humour because as all of us who knew him no bad intensions were ever meant.

In April, 2010 he had decided to leave Sydney and move back to work as a Area Relief Nurse for Great Western Area Health Service to be near his parents and his beloved town of Eugowra. In June, 2012 following a short period of relief work at Lake Cargelligo Multi Purpose Centre, he decided to settle at the Lake with Ross Beattie who became a big part of his life and still is. Tom worked at the Multi Purpose centre until August, 2017 where in the months leading up

to his move with Ross to Molong, worked in the Day Care Unit again making many friends.

Tom survived 2 Male Cancer episodes and lost all his manly bits to stay alive only to be taken out by a stinking lung disease ( His words ).

Tom had 5 Nephews, Matthew and Mitchell Moore, Little Peter, Nicholas and Justin Milne together with 2 Nieces Ashlee and Caitlyn Moore and their partners together with Brothers in law Michael Moore and Peter Milne. In recent years a great nephew Levi and great niece Isabel Milne also joined the family. He loved all of them equally.

It took him a long time to gain the confidence of Isabel only to leave her now. He really enjoyed the weekend cake and coffee visits to her and was teaching her to shake hands and say how do you do. She is now confident to do this.

Tom’s biggest regret was not achieving his major goal which everyone who knew him would know what that was.

Tom was a very unique person, caring, loving & sharing. He had his disappointments like all of us but coped with this and got on with life.

He will be missed in a big way by his family and many friends.

Taronga Western Plains Zoo

Molong Online’s JOHN ROZENTALS loves ‘camping’ at Taronga Western Plains Zoo and rates a couple of the exclusive experiences among the privileges of his life.

While we wait for Government to come to its senses, there are little things we can all do I’m the first to admit that a lot of what I’ve written lately can be viewed as leaning more than a little towards the gloomy end of the spectrum, but it is not all so – last Friday’s turn-out for the planet shows that there is light on the horizon.

“Either we limit our population growth,” the famous naturalist said, “or the natural world will do it for us, and the natural world is doing it for us right now.”

A recent study showed that having one less child is among the most effective things a family can do to shrink its carbon footprint.

Doing so would save 58.6 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions every year as against the 2.4 tonnes saved by living without a car.

Eating less meat would help in some places, but there are better ways It is acknowledged that intensive farming of livestock is not good for the environment. However, the

There is no conclusive evidence that organically grown foods are better for us, but it is acknowledged that its growing methods involving crop rotation and mixed plantings are better for soil health.

Many farmers are implementing regenerative farming techniques, mass tree plantings and other methods aimed at helping restore the environment. Let them know you support them.

Think about your shower The average Aussie showers for approximately seven minutes, using 55 litres of water. Then there’s the electricity or gas used to heat that water. Though we are more waterconscious than many nations, we could still do a little better.

Many people shower more than once a day, and while there are no health statistics on how much bathing is too much, it can strip natural moisturisers from our skin.

We can be forgiven for thinking that no matter how many reusable shopping bags we use, our actions are neutralised by the actions of big industries and government policies.

In some ways that’s true – just 100 companies are responsible for 71 percent of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. There are also known risks associated with being too clean, so it may not be such a bad thing to skip the odd shower. But don’t tell Mum I said that.

Enough with the bottled water already!

In 2015, Australians purchased more 726 millions litres of water, coughing up an average $2.75 per litre for the most popular brand.

In that same year, a total $2 billion dollars was spent on bottled water.

That water has to be pumped out of the ground, packaged, transported and chilled before we buy it, creating 60,000 tonnes of greenhouses gases a year in Australia alone.

We import water from Fiji and from as far away as Italy and France, while the manufacture and transport of the plastic bottles for all this water sucks up more than 460,000 barrels of oil. To produce just one litre of bottled water requires one litre of oil and nearly four litres of water.

And despite what the commercials try to tell us, this water rarely comes from bubbling springs or rushing mountain streams. It’s mostly pumped from underground aquifers at a cost of next next to nothing.

Less than 40 per cent of these water bottles are recycled; the rest end up in landfill or in our waterways.

We should recycle our bottles of course – recycling 41 of them saves enough energy to run a fridge for an hour or a computer for 17 hours – but it would be even better if we stopped buying water in the first place.

In Australia, town and city tap water has to meet rigid standards and is perfectly safe to drink.

However, if you are worried about what might be in it, or need to take water with you when you go out, there are affordable solutions.

The market is awash with waterfiltering devices – pardon the terrible pun – including jugs with a simple, replacable filter. Fill it with water and use it to fill your container.

The planet will thank you.

Fun thing to do: Become a citizen scientist Thanks to cuts by blinkered governments, Australian scientists are seriously underfunded. You can help them by becoming a citizen scientist.

Put simply, Citizen Scientists collect data which they forward to

various organisations to aid them in their research.

The choice of projects is wide and varied and you’re sure to find something to interest you.

Citizen Scientists monitor cloud cover, track the spread of the white cabbage butterfly (climate change is influencing this), collect data on road kill and everything in between.

Okay, so you won’t save the world on your own, but you will be part of the army that is helping do so.

Brewing your own is a better option than grabbing a takeaway cup, most of which aren’t recyclable – an estimated 1 billion of them end up in Australian landfills each year – but if you’re replacing takeaways with single-use coffee pods, think again.

It’s claimed that if you collected all the single-use coffee pods sold by the biggest manufacturer in a year and lined them up end-to-end, you’d have enough to circle the earth ten -and-a-half times.

Those little cups are made from a mixture of plastic and aluminium, and most of the world’s recycling plants don’t yet have the facilities to recycle them.

AGENTS YARDED 2630 LAMBS AND 1380 SHEEP It was a fair quality yarding with a good selection of trade weight new season lambs, along with a few pens of heavy weights. There were also fair numbers of new season lambs to suit the feeders and restockers. There were limited numbers of well finished old lambs.

Light weight lambs to the processors were firm with the 12-18kg 2 scores selling from $98 to $147/head. Trade lambs were firm

to $4 dearer, with the 18-23kg new season lambs selling from $160 to $198/head, to average between 800c and 840c/kg cwt.

Trade weight old lambs sold from $145 to $200/head.

Heavy weight lambs were $5 dearer, while a pen of heavy weight new season lambs sold for $225/head. Trade weight Merino lambs sold from $140 to $173/ head. Young lambs to the feeders and restockers were $6 dearer, Hoggets sold up to $160/head.

It was a very mixed yarding of mutton where most grades were $12 to $22/head cheaper. The bulk of the wethers in the yarding were in store condition and sold to the restockers from $77 to $102/head.

CTLX cattle market report 24/9/19

AGENTS YARDED 1460 It was a good quality yarding with good numbers of well finished yearlings to suit the trade and feeder buyers. There was also a good selection of well finished grown steers and heifers, though cow numbers were back. Most of the regular buyers attended along with a couple of extra restocker orders.

Young cattle to the trade were 10c dearer with prime steer yearlings selling from 265c to 331c, while the prime heifer yearlings sold from 260c to 318c/kg. Feeder steers were firm, while the feeder heifers were 4c to 7c/kg dearer. The feeder steers sold from 220c to 300c, while the feeder heifers sold from 240c to 290c/kg. Young cattle to the restockers were dearer with the young steers selling from 200c to 298c, while the young heifers sold from 140c to 258c/kg.

Grown steers were 9c to 12c dearer with the prime medium and heavy weights selling from 280c to 330c/kg. Grown heifers were 5c dearer with the better types selling from 260c to 314c/kg. Cows were 3c to 7c cheaper with the 2 scores selling from 150c to 199c/kg. The better 3

and 4 scores sold from 200c to 252c with the prime heavy weights averaging 244c/ kg. A very high yielding bull sold for 283c/ kg.

It was a big weekend with both Molong Men's and woman's hockey teams wining their respective Grand finals.

To the Molong community,

A very special thank you to all the supporters who braved the cold and drizzle to support the mens and womens hockey teams that were playing in the hockey grand finals on the weekend.

The support was brilliant and to have a grandstand packed only with supporters from Molong is a credit to the community itself. It was a fantastic day result wise with the men and women both winning and for some players it was their first grand final experience ever.

The women were all class and easily accounted their opposition for a dominant result.

The feedback from players is they thoroughly enjoyed the experience and particularly the atmosphere.

The men's game was a lot closer and fiery in parts and I can say the support provided by the fans, community and shops in town got us over the line.

The reason why we live in a rural community is that no matter what we support each other when times are great and not so.

On behalf of the hockey community we thank the larger community and the role they played in providing a memory that will last forever, even though some players will have a little memory loss on the Sunday morning.

Hayley Lyons reports on a great season

The 2019 Molong Junior Hockey held their presentation day on Saturday 14th September and a successful season it was. Molong had 2 half field teams, the Zebras and Penguins and 4 full field teams, Magpies, Dalmatians, Collies and Pandas in the Open Primary and a mixed under 14’s team, the Skunks, who all played in the Orange competition. There were approximately 60 kids in these teams which is a massive achievement by the people of Molong.

The Skunks played well above their own expectations and the skill progression, team work and game sense improved dramatically over the course of the year. The team finished the competition in 4th place. It was great to see that some of the kids were asked to play in the senior grades and stepped up to the challenge. Thanks to Rolf and Sally Lapins for all their managerial efforts. Well done to Olivia Philpott (Coaches Award), Lucy Haydon (Most Consistent), Tully Philpott (Most Improved) and Zoe Tattersal (Best and Fairest) on being awarded the trophies for their team. MOLONG BOWLS

The Dalmatians were lead by Jo-Anne Lyons and managed by Bianca Grayson. The team had a few new comers to hockey and improved as the season progressed. They lost a couple of close games and finished the season in 9th place. The team awards were presented to Abbie Lyons (Best and Fairest), Solomen Shiner (Most Consistent), Laura Lapins (Most Consistent), The Annual General Meeting was held last Sunday and will be resumed on Sunday 20 October.

President Toby Lyons outlined a reasonably successful year for the club but, like many other clubs and businesses, lacking in patronage and associated trading. Nevertheless the club is debt free and in a reasonable financial position.

Due to insufficient numbers nominating for board positions it was decided to recall nominations and resume the meeting on 20 October.

Further advice will be forthcoming next week.

Changes to the club's constitition last year mean that social members can fill board positions and this needs to be publicised more.

The club operates as a business entity, as a local social and recreation club - not only as a bowls club. There is the opportunity for other sporting and social associations to participate

and utilise the club's facilities for their members.

Teams of 3 play, or attempt to play, around 10 ends of bowls commencing at 6 pm at the Molong Bowling Club - followed by a sausage sizzle. Cost is $10 per head which covers green fees and sausage sizzle. No team nomination fees this year.

Anyone and everyone is invited to enter - no experience or skill necessary. The comp will run for about 8 weeks before returning in the new year.

MOLONG GOLF Last Wednesday 6 of our lady players travelled out to Cumnock for our monthly friendly game.

There were 16 players from the four clubs. The winners on the day were Barbara Wright and Stacey Kramer and the runners up were Ann Wood and Lisa Cobb, well done girls.

Next Wednesday 2nd October we will be playing an 18 hole stroke plus putting 8.30 for 9.00 tee off. We will also be getting ready to host the NSW Disc Golf Championships. ********************** Sunday 29th September is the BIG one, Top Pub vs Bottom Pub 9 holes event (any gender, no problems).
