Molong Real Estate: A friendly farewell, and a warm welcome.
By Emily Gobourg Though well-earned, as of next Monday, Andrew and Kerry Hicks will spend their day with hearts a little heavier, as they say farewell to being the joint business owners and operators of Molong Real Estate. After the pandemic saw isolation phases introduced and interstate borders closing, the couple made the decision for 2020 to be their official year of retirement. Inevitably, these restrictions placed some of their adult children and grandchildren in inaccessible locations, emphasising the importance of family at this stage of the couple’s lives. “Andrew and I will remain in Molong; however, we look forward to spending more time with precious grandchildren and family,” Kerry explained. With these deeper shifts in motion, Andrew and Kerry discussed their options with a broker, and it didn’t take too long until a potential purchaser approached the business. Hesitant about the future of Molong RE, with a heartfelt consideration for what the business would look like for the town moving forward, the couple were thankful to learn that the buyers were blasts from the past, Stephen and Kathy Townsend. “The strength and resilience of this town (along with the district) is a major factor that appealed and enticed the return to Molong,” noted Stephen. Current owners and operators of Townsend Real Estate in Orange, they bring a pre-existing connection to Molong that stretches back to the late eighties – when Ellco Farm Supplies had a depot in Bank Street at Mike and Jenny Clifton’s office. “Getting belted by the Molong Magpies on a Saturday afternoon in winter is [also] a memory that will take a long while to be forgotten, however, the post-game festivities will be long

remembered,” Stephen added. While Molong Real Estate will soon become the merger and unification of the two real estate businesses, the Townsend’s have re-enforced that there will be no apparent changes made to either firm. “Molong Real Estate will continue to operate as [is], with Julie Kent continuing to greet our customers at the front desk or on the phone.” Andrew and Kerry have sought immense comfort in knowing that the future of MRE will be in safe hands, particularly given the building of the business itself has long been the home of real estate firms since 1916. “We would encourage people to support the new owners,” said the Hicks couple. “Stephen and Kathy Townsend have insisted on retaining the name ‘Molong Real Estate’ from the outset, keeping the business local, and employing local people. They will continue to serve Molong and all the villages of Cabonne with the same professional, and genuine service.” With the importance of family making an even deeper shift, understandably, Kerry said she is nostalgic about retiring. Since returning home 11 years ago to Molong – after being born and spending her first 30 years of life here – she said it was “great to come back and be loved again.” “Andrew and I would like to sincerely thank everyone who has supported Molong Real Estate over the past six years, including the various tradespeople who have been [readily] available to look after our clients,” said Kerry. “We’re proud of Molong RE, and what it has provided to cater for the real estate needs of the town. Once again, thank you from the bottom of our hearts.” A warm farewell and best wishes to Andy and Kerry. May the future be rife with school concerts, the occasional sleep-in, and the immeasurable abundance of love from family.
