FOR THOSE who may have missed the front page story in the Express of October 11th, we’d like to remind you that Cabonne is one of 6o regional councils to receive $1 million in grants under the Commonwealth Government’s Drought Communities Program.

The minimum grant amount is $25,000 per application, and applications can include several unrelated activities up to the total funding amount of $1 million.

The government has stated that the program will provide an additional 60 councils with $1m each to support regional communities through the drought.

The guidelines have been broadened to allow for a range of additional drought-relief activities to be funded including drought-relief events and other related activities.

This will give councils the exibility to choose activities that will have the biggest impact in their community.

It is expected that projects will lead to local employment and contribute to the economic activity within communities which will in turn foster the retention of local businesses and services and utilise local resources and suppliers.

Eligible activities can include repairs to, maintenance and upgrading or building of new community facilities; fitting out of community spaces; employing local contractors to undertake these activities; and holding events and other drought-relief activities.

Cabonne Council is now in possession of grant application guidelines, and in consultation with the community and groups within it – including asssociations, sporting clubs and other community groups, will coordinate grant applications.

The Express has joined with the Molong Yarn Market, Molong Rotary and the CWA to look at ways to help local farming families through the drought.

With the lack of water for home/family use being a critical problem - the Express has approached Cabonne Council to ask if the showers at the Rec. kiosk may be accessed by local farming families. This is the sort of helpful initiative which could be duplicated throughout the villages and towns of Cabonne.

The CWA has a project in place to help orphaned lambs survive. 'Woolly Jumpers for Lambs' is a colourful project which knitters (women, men and families) can contribute to.

Most local knitters have odd bits of wool that could be used to make a jumper or two for lambs challenged by the cold, loss of mum, and the drought.

Barb Strong of the Molong Yarn Market has

some balls of wool at the Craft Cottage she is happy to pass on to willing knitters. See pattern for 'Woolly Jumpers for Lambs' P.15. The pattern is also available from the Express office or Molong Yarn Market. Finished jumpers and/ or wool yarns can be left at the Express office for collection by farmers and/or for distribution to other areas.

With Molong being a close and caring 'extended family' we have the opportunity to personally hold out a warn hand to farming friends/neighbours. A visit (perhaps take a homemade cake, casserole or a small handmade gift - sit with a cuppa, or a beer and ask R.U.OK. Keep in touch via phone, email or visits. Could there be a more caring gift than that of 'time'?

Whilst there is so much going on at the moment with drought relief projects and programs - the strength of our small communities is to do what we have always done in these times. Stay close, talk, offer a warm hand and show that we care about each other.

Last Friday one of the Euchareena Rd Waste Processing trucks from Orange turned over going around the bend at the top of the hill opposite the Golf Course. Nothing really spectacular, the driver was fortunately unhurt. The waste trucks are tall and top heavy.

The incident however prompted farmers and residents along the route to again express concerns about safety and adequacy of the route to what has always been considered an inappropriate site for a waste dump.

Hopefully a review of the incident will look at the condition of the road including its width and lead to corner improvements.

Meanwhile Orange City Council have applied to make changes to the strict conditions imposed in 2012 by Planning NSW on the use of the site.

While in the main they reflect current conditions - submissions to Planning NSW have been made reminding both Planning NSW and Orange City Council that there is no justification for changing any condition that was imposed to

manage risks to the Apiary industry.

The Council was reminded that it should not be assumed that there are no bees within 5 kms of the site.

While the address of an apiarist’s registered business may be located outside the 5km zone, this has no correlation to where hives are located. A substantial number of hives continue to be consistently located in close proximity to the Euchareena site because of the natural attributes of the locality.

Fires on the site have also caused concern. At a fire in January this year it was necessary to source water off site - the Boomey Fire Brigade truck sourced water from the Molong Creek which was used to help extinguish the fire.

Whether this was necessary, or not, is unclear and submissions have called for Orange City Council to meet with members of the local fire brigades (Boomey and Molong and possibly Canobolas Zone) to ensure these matters are more appropriately coordinated and can be responded to far more efficiently than the January incident.

“Pop into Blayney and other parts of the Central West and get to enjoy what this wonderful part of Australia has to offer,” Mr Morrison said.

“The government can’t make it rain, but what we can do is invest and bring forward investment in projects and services and other things that keep the money churning around in the towns.

“It keeps the hairdresser open, the mechanic open,

places like this farm supply shop, and it will help us get from where we are now, to where we want to be when it’s raining again.”

The Government has stated that the program will provide an initial 60 Councils with up to $1 million each to support regional communities through the drought.

See P.6 Please take a look - join in the fun, donate to Little Wings who help rural children in need of travel assistance to medical care - and the Black Dog Institute for research and services for men suffering depression and tough times in their lives.

Betty Watcham will be outside SPAR Molong on Friday (tomorrow 9 am to 4 pm) with an empty shopping trolly where locals and business owners are invited to place non-perishable food donations to help former Molong resident and Tottenham farmer, Katie O'Brien (nee Mulcahey) farmer husband, Justin O'Brien and their young sons (story in last week's Express).

"My daughter will be delivering the donated food to the O'Brien's this weekend. Anything at all will help - flour, pasta, rice, cleaning products, toilet paper, tissues and personal hygiene products, dog food etc. etc. food for the boys etc.

Molong Baptist Church with the support of Molong Central School is holding its inaugural ‘Chill’n & Grill’n’ afternoon on Friday 2 November 2018 between 4pm-6pm on the sports oval at the school.

All members of the community are invited to enjoy the Chill’n & Grill’n afternoon which includes a free BBQ, jumping castles, games and prizes including $2,000 worth of vouchers from local businesses to be won.

“The drought has had a significant impact throughout our region and has resulted in many people experiencing anxiety and stress.

WITH ONLY a handful of serious incidents, NSW Police have been able to praise most racegoers for their behaviour over the Bathurst 1000 event.

Operation Hoist targeted anti-social behaviour and ensuring the safety of competitors, officials and more than 200,000 racegoers.

Acting Western Region Commander, Assistant Commissioner Greg Moore said police were pleased with the overall crowd behaviour.

“The event is becoming more family-friendly each year, and it is great to see such a positive change in behaviour around the mountain,” he said.

“NSW Police have and will continue to work closely with Supercars to not only ensure the event is safe, but it is enjoyable for everyone who attends.”

In one of several incidents, police arrested a 36-year-old man at about 10.30am on Sunday after he allegedly yelled offensive language at a politician.

Dubbo

THE NSW Government has committed $1.2 million to a business case for a new regulator, which will allow better management of water on the Macquarie River.

Minister for Regional Water Niall Blair visited Gin Gin weir recently and said the project will form part of a future water strategy for the Macquarie, which will identify infrastructure and policy solutions for water use in the region.

“Water is fundamental to life in our regions and as we are currently seeing, water security in the Macquarie is vulnerable in times of drought,” Mr Blair said.

Member for Dubbo, Troy Grant said previous studies have shown that a mid-system water storage located in the vicinity of Gin Gin weir, and between Narromine and Warren, could provide the flexibility the river operators need to limit the water lost through evaporation and increase the capacity of the Macquarie River to deliver water needed for both productive and environmental purposes.

“The purpose of any new regulator will be to create consistency of water supply for agriculture and other industries during both wet and dry periods and to improve water efficiency throughout the Macquarie system,” Mr Grant said.

A river regulator is a barrage constructed across a river to raise its level and control its flow.

WaterNSW will develop the business case for this project, which will explore the engineering feasibility, environmental considerations and costs of the proposed storage.

Nationals candidate for Dubbo, Dugald Saunders said he was pleased to see the Government focusing on the future of water security for the regions.

Mudgee

SCULPTURES in the Garden, was held at Rosby winery in Mudgee over the weekend with over 3,500 people attending, an increase of one thousand people from last year.

Special guest and revered patron of Australian art, Wendy Whiteley opened the exhibition, which showcased the largest ever collection of works for the event.

With three major acquisition prizes up for grabs, winners included; Hui Selwood from Hill End who took out the major $25,000 Sculptures in the Garden and Mid-Western Regional Council prize with his work, ‘Pentad’.

Matt Hill from Melbourne who won the $10,000 Friends of Sculptures in the Garden prize for his work ‘Jack Thompson (Cleo Centrefold circa 1973)’ and Richard Nagel, a Mudgee local was awarded the $5,000 Moolarben prize for his work, ‘Flame Within’.

These acquired works will be included in Mudgee’s sculpture walk in Lawson Park joining the 14 sculptures already featured.

Forbes

LAST week Forbes received it’s best rain since November last year but not enough to break the drought after months of below average rainfall.

The 24 hour period up until 9am on Friday was Forbes’ wettest day (26mm) so far this year, but total falls are still well below the same time last year.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology Forbes has received 154.8mm between January and now, compared with 298.2mm in the same period last year.

Forbes’ October’s rainfall stands at 31.6mm and with further rain forecast, farmers are hopeful of reaching the long term average for the month of 39mm.

Last week’s rain was more than September (6.8), August 912.2) and July (0.8) combined.

No more food for thoughts CENTROC says “just get on with it!”

The Chair of Centroc is urging the State Government to action the recommendation by the Legislative Council Portfolio Committee Number 1, Fresh Food Pricing Report.

The fourth recommendation reads, that Transport for NSW convene a taskforce to expedite the development of a plan to improve rail and road corridors for industry across the Great Dividing Range. “We are the transport planning capital of NSW, we have Taskforces, medium and long term strategies coming out of our ears. We need to see some action,” Cr Medcalf said.

“Everyone in NSW can see the problem. What we want to see is work on a solution – right now!

How is it possible that Queensland can build two safe swift links west to east into Brisbane, and NSW can’t even secure a corridor for a future upgrade?” Cr Medcalf said.

“We welcome recognition of the NSW Farmer’s submission calling for a reliable sub three hour journey between Western Sydney and Central

NSW by the Committee,” Cr Medcalf said.

“Addressing the current inefficiencies in transporting goods over the Blue Mountains will assist Central NSW to grow and prosper while providing fresh, great food to the communities of Western Sydney,” Cr Medcalf said.

Challenged: Molong Creek and its tributaries

By ROB BURGESS One would have to agree with Jim Neil’s article on the decline of our rivers.

To see the damage done by overextraction of water, you have only to look at our own creek The stream and its tributaries are now dammed beyond the point where water extraction is sustainable.

In the first 11 kilometres of its course, it is dammed to to form Lake Canobolas and water is pumped from the store to fill the many holding dams used to provide water for irrigation.

In this area, the tributaries are straddled by 37 dams exceeding 15 megalitres, 60 other major dams and in excess of 150 minor dams.

The number of bores, wells and tapped springs is enormous and still to be fully listed.* At the end of the 1980s drought, a dam-sinkingAfter frenzy took place and all tributaries are now barricaded by many dams, only feeding water into the creek after extended periods of excessive rainfall.* After clearing the first 11km of “water grab”, the creek is again assaulted by the new dam for the Molong Town Water Supply and the Pipe-head weir below the dam.

The Borenore Creek, a major tributary of the Molong, is blocked by the old Molong supply dam, which has been retained as a backup.

Again, all tributaries, gullies or any other depression that could possibly hold water have fallen to the same frenzy of dam building that has impounded the upper reaches.

The flood levels that were once regular occurrences, scoured the creek bed to form the patchwork of both deep and shallow holes necessary for the health of aquatic life. Now the freshest are small and carry heavy sediment loads that fill even the deeper holes.

The Molong Creek Catchment will never get any better but it won’t get much worse.* Little did they know the Molong Water Supply Dam would be tapped to supply water to North Orange and water would be piped from Molong to supply Cumnock and Yeoval.

The sad part of this saga is that it is not an isolated case. The Molong Creek is merely one of the many streams destroyed by the overcommittal of available water.

Successive governments have not had the backbone to say “No” to the irrigators and to local government – obviously streams don’t vote!

Flowers etched in Maddie’s memory Growing up on the family farm at Garra has introduced Maddison Burgess to the colour of the sunsets, sunrises and the vast landscape that is still able to produce beauty even when challenged by the elements of the four seasons.

“From as long back as I can remember I have wandered through the paddocks and gullies of our farm discovering and collecting wildflowers and native grasses” said Maddison. “My family and my Nan (Carol Burgess) love the floral pieces I make for them and have always encouraged me to keep creating in whatever I do, or make.”

The Molong Central School art rooms with the remarkable skills of art teacher, Claire Ryan, have combined with Maddie’s rural living experience encouraging her to add drawing, printmaking, etching, photography to her creativity.

Now moving into Year 12 HSC Art - Claire Ryan and Maddy’s family encouraged her to apply for

a specialist school holiday art program in Sydney - right in the heart of Oxford Street within the walls of the dynamic Sydney National Art School.

A place where the modest, softly spoken woman from Cabonne Country was surrounded by aspiring artists focussed on creativity.

From the experience - Maddison’s work has moved to a mature beginning where she has been able to take her natural landscape experiences into her drawings, etchings, printmaking ...

This is noticeably the start of much more to come from this interesting born and bred Cabonne Country resident and developing artist.

Hotel History: a pub crawl with a difference It’s going to be a pub crawl with a difference on Saturday 10 November when curious people are invited to join the Orange Regional Museum and Orange and District Historical Society members on a walking tour of Orange’s historical drinking houses.

Orange Mayor and keen historian, Reg Kidd said people would find out how The Wellington became The Royal and when the Prince of Wales became the Kmart car park.

“There’s a lot of history and great yarns surrounding Orange pubs,” Cr Kidd said. “Many of these buildings were erected over 100 years ago, and I like to think what the walls would say if they could talk today!

“The museum staff and the Historical Society members will help fill in those gaps and recreate those stories.”

The Tractor Trek

Molong was the venue for this year's Central West Tractor Trek charity drive with the main base being the Showgrounds. Local hospitality and services came together to make the 3 day event one to be remembered with some $120,000 raised for the Little Wings charity group.

(Mary Mulhall, assisted by Julie Dean (above left) and the Molong St. John Cadets, catered for the main dinner on Saturday night with 200 drivers, their families and locals attending what was yet another fine example of how the town draws positively together to 'make it happen'.

The Molong Rapid Relief Team provided dinner on Friday night to the Tractor Trek crowd. This new group in town of young Brethrens support charity events (at no cost for food or service) and in times of emergency to support other volunteer groups.

The 3 Molong Grannies have been raising significant money through street stalls, catering functions etc for the Little Wings Charity which assists rural families to access specialist hospital and medical services in major cities.

Heather, Margaret and Lesley and their team are amongst the most active volunteers and charity supporters in this town and area.

In fact, they hardly ever stop looking after Molong and district communities. All three have devoted their lives to this role.

Somehow they have found the time to hop on their vintage tractor and drive 1,000 kms each year to raise $$'s for charity (then again, it is probably the only time they sit for awhile!)_ The grannies are also very tough farming women - they were one of only two tractor trekkers who drove 'open' machines. No warm cabins for these local farming women on what was a very cold Molong weekend!

Note: The 3 Molong Grannies have raised in excess of $15,000 since they started fundraising for Little Wings. A great achievement.

Socialism and public health: a tribute to Jock and Edie Our family was pretty nomadic.

The Old Man always thought that if he upped stumps and moved somewhere else, life would improve for him. Maybe he never discovered that we take our demons with us until we manage to shake them off – or perhaps he preferred to live with those he knew rather than risk being overtaken by the unknown.

Whatever, between moves we’d often stay with Nana, my maternal grandmother Maude Louise, a remarkable woman to whom I owe my stubbornness and much else besides.

At the time I want to tell you of, Maude was living in a ramshackle house – best described as a dump, though we did our best to keep it and ourselves clean and tidy – in Hay Street, Subiaco, an inner Perth suburb now mostly the preserve of architects’ studios, advertising agencies and gentrified town houses.

The house was set below street level and boasted an outside brick dunny; the laundry and bathroom, with its wood-fired copper for the clothes and a cast-iron bath for us, occupied a lean-to at the rear of the house. You could see the sky through the old nail-holes in the kitchen’s iron roof – the other rooms had ceilings – and the floors had more bumps than a bellydancers’ picnic.

The street was a kids’ paradise.

Electric trams clanked and rattled up and down; there was a medley of bakers’ carts and the carts of

clips. Edie favoured print dresses, cardigans, and white cotton socks rolled down to the tops of her court shoes.

When first I read The Nargun and the Stars, Patricia Wrightson’s classic novel for kids and one of the scariest books ever, I instantly saw Jock and Edie in the siblings who take in the hero after his parents are killed. Brave, and warm with a sympathetic ear, the woman, too, is named Edie.* Jock and Edie were constantly in and out of our house to collect one or all of us kids to take us for a walk or over to their place for biscuits and lolly water and a stickybeak at the mementoes of Jock’s seafaring days, or to just sit in Nana’s kitchen with its already ancient gas stove – a Metters Early Kooka with its nowcollectable buff enamelled door emblazoned with a worm-eating kookaburra and gumleaves – and have a yarn and a cup of tea with the adults. hawkers, mongers and marine collectors; Bunnings timberyard was a rich source of sometimes purloined wood for the laundry copper and the West Australian Museum and Art Gallery was just a 45-minute walk away if you knew the shortcuts. Edie brought food: stews and baked rabbit – the ubiquitous ‘underground mutton’ of the working poor of the time – and cake for us and soup for Mum, and she and Jock had us kids over at their place as much as they could, Edie fussing over Kez and Jock rough-housing it with Dan and me, allowing us to let off steam.

I can’t remember what the official arrangements to get food to us were, but it was Jock and Edie who showed how it should be done. Their kindness allowed Nana to concentrate on housework and Peg. I asked them once if they weren’t scared they’d catch the disease. “Any old germ gets in me it’d die of fright,� said Jock, who always smelled of the carbolic soap much favoured by seamen. “And Edie’s too much of an old boiler for any germ to want to go near.�

Edie was often a target for his goodnatured chiaking, then he’d duck as she – a head and shoulders taller and a few years older – would swing at his ear with whatever she had in her hand, usually a tea towel or wooden spoon and once, a ball of wool that unravelled her knitting as it flew.

Grampa Frank, the crocodile trapper, had a few years before given me a young sulphur-crested cockatoo with the dreadful beak-and-feather disease, poorly understood at the time. We brushed him with water in which quassia chips had been soaked, but it did no good – the disease is cause by a mite; feather plucking, brought on by neurosis, is sometimes halted with quassia but of course it doesn’t alleviate the cause – so we let him be.

Jock, an avid reader of Westerns or “Outdoor Novels� as they were sometimes called, named him Maverick. Seeing him shivering one cold morning, Edie had knitted him a striped jumper and

Maverick loved it. He would let you know when he was too warm and wanted it off or when he was cold enough to need it on.

That cockatoo had the run of the house but his favorite possie was on the spreaders of the kitchen chairs, which he reduced to matchstick dimensions in places as he perched on them waiting for scraps to “fall� from the table. With us kids in terror of his raucous voice killing Mum, Jock and Edie took him to live at their place, where he stayed for years, moving with them when they were forced out by the encroachment of commercial expansion. Over the years their regular letters kept us informed of his doings until the day he died – and we could tell by the letter that the heroic couple were heartbroken. The letters continued, however, and they were still writing to Mum when I left home.

Peg eventually recovered, the quarantine was lifted. Us kids went to the free but compulsory swimming lessons at Crawley Baths†, Grampa Frank, in his persona as “Mr Crocodile�, gave annual demonstrations in Boan’s departmentstore window and persons in the form of friends and relatives came and went, while Dad stayed went, working away.

Jock and Edie, if I get to the same place that you’ve gone, you’ll be among the first person or persons I hug. I swear it. †Crawley was one of several “swimming baths� in the Swan River. Despite the grandiose name, they were nothing more than enclosures of wooden poles and pickets where the public could, for a small admission fee, swim unmolested by the bull sharks and (allegedly) bronze whalers that made a good living in a river that still was rich in fish and crustaceans, and by the hordes of jellyfish that were beginning to warn of the river’s degradation. Unfortunately only a few people listened to the jellyfish in a State where anything unaltered and in its natural state is seen as an affront to the establishment in general and [these days] to Charlie Court in particular. Crawley Baths was the venue for the swimming lessons that were free and compulsory for all primary school kids in those areas with access to safe water – a regime that should be reinstated. When they were demolished, hordes of kids scoured the mud for pennies and threepences dropped over the years.

Not long after the events described here, Mum made an announcement about a forthcoming event that would forever change my life and reinforce the attitudes and ideals that had already begun to form themselves in my young mind: we were going to fly – yes fly; by plane – up north, then take a boat to join the Old Man on Cockatoo Island in the Buccaneer Archipelago.

I’m just wonderin’ that’s all Making enquiries about the price of water tanks the other day, we learned that regulations limit the size of household water tanks to 10,000 litres.

Thinking it was a purely local restriction, I did a bit of research and found it to be one of those “model regulations� – one among many – instituted by the State government.

Why would this be? A Twitter friend of a Twitter friend thought that if a bigger tank burst or collapsed, water damage to foundations of nearby buildings could be substantial, and that might be a point.

But by the same token, if a B-double lost it coming down the Cumnock road in front of my place, the damage to foundations and other sections of the house would be equally substantial, and I can’t see Our Glad banning B-doubles on the Cumnock road, can you?

I know we have to have rules and regulations, the world would be an even bigger mess without them, but some of the model regulations covering the million and one activities that we engage in as hobbies or by which we seek to enhance our surroundings don’t seem to make much sense.

I don’t think we’ve yet succumbed to the

“American disease�, whereby lobby groups of all sorts seek to influence local and state governments to pass legislation in the interests of their particular business, and I hope we never do.

This disease has become so entrenched in the US that lobbyists have been accused of actually drawing up the legislation for government representatives to present to their legislatures.

As an example, friends of mine – fellow pigeon enthusiasts – have been living for many, many years on a small, semi-rural subdivision of 3-acre lots. A couple of years ago, the subdivision was enlarged and on behalf of the developers the county enacted new “model regulations�.

Among them were restrictions on the number of chooks and pigeons that could be kept, but no limits on the number of horses or dogs – the new development was advertised as “ideal for horse and/or dog-lovers�.

I’m not saying that we’re this bad – though Alan Jones recent Opera House dummy spit was a bit of a worry – but I would like to know why in this, The Land of the Long Dry Spells, a 10,000L limit has been set for household tanks.

Just wonderin’ that’s all.

Wednesday Bowls The last few Wednesday bowls have been interrupted by an outburst of thunder, hail and heavy rain.

Thank goodness for Wednesday Bowls.

More rain is needed in the area and we can recover with bowls so send it down.

David Wicks Tournament The David Wicks Men’s Open Pairs Tournament is getting close and there will

be Bowlers from all over the state, with teams travelling long distances.

17 and 18 November 18. The Bowls played will be of high quality so come along and enjoy the weekend.

Annabelle’s Kitchen is open on Friday and Saturday with a great array of meals, with a coverage of many choices.

Book early to secure a table, book early by calling the Club after 4.30pm Mon, Tues, Wed, Thurs, Fri and 12.00 noon Sat. The badge draw on Sat was not won and the badge draw next week the draw will be for over $400.00.

MOLONG WOMEN'S BOWLS Well, it has been a busy couple of weeks for our ladies representing our club in Gala Days, President's Days, Charity Days and district events. Our fellow members have been to the following places Majellan, Millthorpe, Parkes, Newstead and Canowindra. All of the ladies enjoyed the days, played good bowls and had fun (that's what its really about). A big congrats goes out to Di and Melissa Wilson who were picked to play in the Jess Knight - a

district event which was held at Mudgee.

Both ladies bowled well and to top that off Canobolas district won the whole event.

Well doen again ladies.

A big congrats goes to Sarah Fessey on her selection in the under 25's state side.

Washout and big win for Magpies

Magpies had a crushing win over Millthorpe whilst Cudal and Country were washed out in round two of the Oilsplus Cricket Competition.

Travelling to Milltorpe by bus the Magpies team were keen after having the bye in round one. Most of the Magpies players were in prime condition after a strict off season regime of beer, chips, spring rolls and dagwood dogs. Jacob Evans the luckless Magpies captain lost his 56th toss in a row and was booed by his own players. The home side elected to bat and got off to a good start with opening batsman Will Oldham (41) laying the platform for what should have been a good total. However he didn’t have much support from his team mates with only P Joyce (21) offering any real backup. At the drinks break Millthorpe were on target for another 200 score being 3 for 79.

However after drinks they lost 7 wickets in four overs for just 11 runs to be dismissed for 91. Magpies fielded brilliantly taking 9 catches in the innings. This have never occurred before and an investigation has commenced after tubes of super glue were found in the bins. Players Dylon Wilson, Jacob Evans, Mitch Christie, Les Hoppa

and Rod Jones who are normally about as handy as an ash tray on a motor bike in the field, took miraculous catches. Kyle Worner 4 for 5 and Luke Osborn 3 for 7 completely destroyed the home teams batting with some superb bowling. With storm clouds fast approaching Magpies captain Evans took a gamble and sent his swashbuckling batter Dylon Wilson up the order for quick runs to beat the rain.

For once in his life Jacob got it right and Wilson plundered the luckless Millthorpe attack all over the ground scoring a quick fire 63 to allow Magpies to cruise to victory by 6 wickets. No sooner had the game ended and the heavens opened. A lucky win for Magpies in some respects.

Millthorpe are left ruing a poor start to the season with two losses, particularly at home. They will need to record a win soon or will be left behind. The second game at Hunter Caldwell was washed out part way through with Cudal scoring 176 and Country in reply 0 for 18.

This Saturday sees Cudal and Magpies clash at Cudal and Country playing Molong Bowlers at Hunter Caldwell. Millthorpe are left licking their wounds with the bye.

MOLONG GOLF Last Sunday we had our annual Molong Open Tournament. Everybody had a really good day. The course played good as well.

No snakes or crows sighted.

Light weight lambs held firm while heavy trade lambs were up $12 to $16, light weight mutton were up to $10 dearer while heavy mutton held firm.

CTLX cattle market report 23/10/18

This week’s yarding saw an increase in numbers by 240 cattle of last weeks, with 1150 cattle yarded. Again we saw a supply of good finished cows with only a few pens off lighter cows on offer, along with some good lines feeder steers and heifers, young cattle and calves made up

the remainder.

Young cattle to the trade were firm, feeder cattle were 15 to 20c dearer, young cattle to restockers and calves were 20c dearer.

Most grades of cows were again 12 to 20c dearer on the back off last weeks sale, the cow market at the moment is continually on the rise again with better finished types making between 260c to 276c kg.
