Fairbridge another chapter written

Another chapter of the Fairbridge Farm School was written last Saturday with the opening and dedication of the Fairbridge Military Memorial on the Fairbridge Children's Park site near Molong.

Ninety-five children, almost ten percent of those who were at Fairbridge, later served in the Australian armed forces in both war and peace operations.

Fifty-nine of them served overseas during World War II, the Korean War, the Malayan ‘Emergency’ and the Vietnam War. Three were killed while in serviceCharlie Brown, Mickey Mitchell and Christopher Redfern. Very few farms in Australia have made such a significant contribution to the defence and security of the nation.

More than 900 British children were sent to Australia without their parents from 1938-1974 to live and work at Fairbridge.

A warm "welcome to country" was given by Brad Bliss and Elder Aunty Josephine, followed by addresses

by Derek Moriarty (President Old Fairbridgians Association), Jamie Jones, Cabonne Deputy Mayor, RSL Representatives and Federal Member for Calare Mr Andrew Gee.

During his address Mr Gee noted: “My grandmother was a Bernados child and my family knows only too well that the story of child migration to Australia is often one of tragedy, heartbreak, violence, cruelty and an abrogation of state responsibility towards vulnerable children.

But through all of that, there are also stories of personal triumph; stories of how children who came to Australia with absolutely nothing, were sent to places like Fairbridge, and went on to build lives and Derek Moriarty, veterans Sydney Lee, John Barron, Ian 'Smiley' Bayliff ,Tony Stepney and futures and make an enormous Graham Lee officially opened the memorial. contribution to local communities and to our nation.

A part of this story is how 95 Fairbridge boys went on to serve their country in the armed forces, three of whom made the ultimate sacrifice. This service and sacrifice is part of the Fairbridge story. It is therefore very fitting that the names of those former students appear on this memorial, so that future generations will always remember where they came from and what they did in our country’s name. We must never forget them.”

Minister inspects Molong flood Council to lobby for fix to run-down Manildra police mitigation proposals

Minister for Regional Transport and Roads, the Hon. Paul Toole MP visited Molong last week to discuss flood mitigation in the town.

The Molong Floodplain Risk Management Committee, re-formed late last year has reviewed past consultant reports and will commission an updated Urban Drainage Strategy which has identified larger problems including localised flooding due to drainage.

A proposal will go to the the Deputy Premier seeking funding to include the urban drainage design/strategy, Floodplain and Levee design.

A Vegetation Management Plan has been prepared and exotic species removed. A proactive plan will be developed for council to fund the maintenance of the creek.

A drone has been purchased which will allow for aerial imagery and gaining dimensions of the creek flow Minister Toole was joined by NSW Nationals Upper House MLC Sam Farraway and Cabonne Mayor Kevin Beatty in his inspection of problem areas for flooding in Molong. Particular attention was paid to the railway bridges at Euchareena

Road and on the floodplain below the Cumnock Road intersection “We look forward to continuing to work with the NSW Government into the future to mitigate flooding in the Molong area,” Mayor Kevin Beatty said.

“Flooding has been a long-term issue for the Molong community and, with flooding once again at the forefront of everyone’s mind, the time is right to look into options to prepare for the future,” he said.

“Dine and Discover” vouchers now here

The Berejiklian government’s $500 million voucher program to stimulate the economy out of the COVID-19 crisis will be available to every citizen in NSW by the end of March.

The voucher scheme, which is built into the Service NSW app, is being rolled out to another 67 council areas after successful pilot programs in areas such as the CBD and the northern beaches.

Cabonne is now eligible under the program.

The “Dine and Discover” program every adult four $25 vouchers to spend on dining and entertainment.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said “It’s a win for all our citizens because it takes the cost of living pressure off of us, but also for businesses as it increases their ability to receive people again, as we move through COVID,” she said.

Two of the vouchers can be redeemed in restaurants, cafes and clubs and two vouchers can be used for entertainment such as cultural institutions, performing arts, cinemas and

amusement parks.

It is hoped people would spend more than $25 in a transaction in which they used a voucher, “because we want a co-contribution. And that’s the beauty of the design of this.”

So far, the average spend by a consumer is about $40, including the $25 voucher.

Consumers can access the vouchers online through the Service NSW app or in paper form at a branch for those who do not have a smartphone or compatible device. They will be valid until June 30.

Cabonne Mayor, Kevin Beatty told Cabonne Council on Tuesday that he had been advised by the Manildra & District Progress Association that the local Police Station is at present unmanned with little hope of attracting any permanent placement due to poor, run-down and unsafe condition of police station and residence.

“Councillors will be aware of the benefit of having a police presence and visibility in our communities.

Part of the attraction of policing in country communities is the interaction and the ability to blend with the community. The provision of good residential facilities that are suitable for families goes a long way to attracting police officers to country towns.” Mayor Beatty said.

It is intended that Council lobby through our State Member, Phil Donato, to have the condition of the police station and residence bought up to standard.

While they are about it, Manildra isn’t the only run-down station. While not preventing Molong from having a police presence Molong Police are in temporary accommodation following the closure of the Police Station in Edward street.

The Express enquired (a number of times) about this fantastic historical building located across the road from the Rec, grounds and the brilliant sporting and youth facilities and activities. Surely there is a use for this building?

“The fantastic stone building is quite roomy inside with spacious

areas on the outside” said Rozzi Smith.

“The lock up outside is in itself worthy of saving as well - as is the spacious court house adjoining the police station which has not been used for decades. I’ve always been given the same old argument (by both the Dept and Council) about asbestos blah, blah, blah.

Same old story. We can’t afford to lose this historical building - can anyone help me??” said Rozzi.

Cabonne Sponsorship Program approves first applications

The first applications under a revamped events assistance program were approved by Cabonne Council on Tuesday.

The new Cabonne Sponsorship Program aims to deliver benefit to the Cabonne community and economy through a range of strong and engaging events. The events must establish a mutually beneficial partnership between Council and the community, whilst being able to identify economic, social and cultural benefits to the Cabonne area.

Current grants include: Molong Village Markets Three markets annually: $15,000 ($5,000 per event).

The Molong Markets are held three times a year with a large variety of market stallholder. Their projected number of attendees are up to 5,000 people. Funds that are raised by Molong Advancement Group from the market days go

straight back to the community.

Australian National Field Days 2021 : $15,000.

There are 500 exhibitors which bring an average of 4.2 supporters with them, total of 2891 with an estimated 18,000 visitors.

Canowindra International Balloon Challenge 2021: $10,000.

Canowindra International Balloon Challenge is one of Australia’s largest gathering of hot air balloons and primary training event for Australians competitive balloon pilots. The event is held over 9 days and is free for spectators on all but one event. The signature event is a night glow which includes night stalls, live music, food and beverage vendors, local community groups and the hot air balloons that light up to choreographed music.

Their projected number of attendees are between 4000-8000 people.

It is going to take a mighty effort of 'people power' to get the Board of Directors and Management of the Commonweath Bank to keep the 'people's bank' in Molong.

Whilst there is talk of petitions being circulated in Molong and both Federal, State and Local Government members making approaches to the decisionmakers - nothing is more effective than local community people writing letters to each of the Commonweath Board Chairman and Directors (the final decision-makers of the Molong closure) - to voice theirs and their families disappointments. And, to hold each of these decision-makers responsible for what is an unnecessary closure.

So the Molong branch of the Commonwealth Bank is closing down!

Virtually every business in our town - the lifeblood of the shoppers, the drinkers, the out-to-dinner people and the householders is put in the position where they will have to organise their banking in another town or by computer.

But what of the pensioners who do not use cards and do not have computer access?

These people who go to the bank to get cash so they can pay ther bills, get their groceries or have a beer and use real money to absorb their debts.

S0me of them don't even have cars and a mobilty scooter on the highway to Orange is not a great idea!

So the 'Powers That Be' with the 'Biggest Bank' - you know the one that school children going back 80 years and longer were totally encouraged to bank Commonwealth - today, could not give a 'Tinker's Cuss' about a thriving small town nor about the people in it.

Well done - you have killed an Australian legend - you b..t..ds!

Remember when ... families were able to trust the Commonwealth Bank?

Remember when we could buy a Commonwealth Bank money box for 6 pence? When we used simple Passbooks? When we could bank at school?

When the Commonweath Bank was as loyal to its customers as we have been to them?

Not so these days in a world taken over by corporate greed, plus increasing shareholder demands - when $8+billion half year profit is not enough, and good governance means the slashing of the legendary "family bank/ small business bank". Not enough for today's egotistical corporates who command $3++ million salaries (plus millions more in bonuses) who have their own underlying need to rise above all to reflect their own worth.

Kids of the bush lining up to add to their savings book/pass-book at school. Back then the Commonweath Bank was the 'people's bank' loved and trusted by local communities.

Cabonne Acquisitive Art Prize exhibition opening this Saturday

The Cabonne Acquisitive Art Prize is taking up residence at the Molong RSL from Saturday 27 March for its annual exhibition and judging of the artworks.

The art prize, currently in its second year, aims to foster a sense of identity, pride and place in Cabonne whilst encouraging and showcasing the high calibre of creative talent in the region.

Council has received in excess of 20 artworks for the Acquisitive Art Prize and over 50 artworks for the Primary and Secondary School sections.

The artworks will be displayed at the Molong RSL from Saturday 27 March to Thursday 8 April, with opening times displayed below for general public viewing.

Council is fortunate to be joined by two fantastic judges; Robert Stephens, the Director of the Aarwun Gallery in Canberra, will be judging the Cabonne Acquisitive Art Prize, and local Orange artist, Joy Engelman will be judging the Primary and Secondary Cabonne Art Prizes.

People’s Choice voting will be open via in-person submission at the exhibition or online submission through the Cabonne Council website from 11am Saturday 27 March. There is a cost of $2 per vote. The winner of the People’s Choice award will win $1000.

The winner of each category will be announced at an awards evening to be held on Thursday 8 April. Due to COVID, this will be an invite only event. The award recipients will also be announced on Council’s website and social media channels on Friday 9 April.

An Exhibition Catalogue will be available online on Council’s Molong artist, Michael Carroll’s 2020 prize winning website from 5pm painting of ‘Gordon’s Garden’.

“The Big Vegie Crunch” for 2021: NSW primary school children simultaneously crunch down

By Emily Gobourg It was “Vegetable Week 2021” last week, where “The Big Vegie Crunch” was held in schools across NSW at 10:00am on Thursday 18th March.

Funded by NSW Health, the school-based event for NSW Primary Schools is funded has a two-pronged approached which aims to a) get kids excited about eating more veggies in their day-today lives, and to b) break the record for the highest number of children

eating vegetables simultaneously.

The numbers are in: While the record still stands at over 50 thousand, the Healthy Kids Association recorded 41,003 NSW primary school students for 2021 all crunching down on veggies at the exact same time last week - a spectacular number for 2021 nonetheless!

A big congratulations to all of the students involved.

by Penseuse The beautiful ancient Greek Goddess still stands today for love, beauty, pleasure, passion and procreation. The essences of a woman as portrayed throughout time.

Women who once stood as sculptures made by artisans who worshipped the curves, rounds, mounds which melted in their hands from slabs of rock cut from mystical places. \ Have today’s women representing the fast lanes of life and careers today - actually achieving a better place than the goddesses and women after Eve? Has life itself throughout the ages to today taken women too far away from love beauty, pleasure, passion ... and what may well have been the original role given to us - exclusvely to women - i.e. procreation?

The women who marched in Canberra last week ask that “the conversation needs to be had”.

My puzzle (I kid you not) is “what is the conversation” we women of today need to have With each other? With men? With the Prime Minister? With politicians accused of ‘sexism’, ‘rape’. With religions/the Bible? Women’s Groups. Men’s Groups? Schools? Within the Home?

How many women across Australia are we talking about who actually want the conversation that we are told by our sisterhood needs to be had.

Then again, are we all part of the ‘sisterhood’ of today - or of yesterday. Probably not.

Women of today have come a long way - we have gained choices, freedom, opportunities to equal the balance with our men. We no longer have to give birth like the women before us who had their lives burdened giving birth and raising up to 12 children.

But are we to be led to a conversation that needs to be had by the female politicians of today?

In my time, we raised many conversations to benefit us back then - and the women of today and to help the women of tomorrow.

We rolled up our sleeves and conducted sensible and well versed communication to ask both male and female politicians for change.

We asked for ‘a voice’ - we asked to be heard we asked to be listened to - we asked to not be ignored - we asked for the needs of not only ourselves but also that of our children (both female and male) to be heard- we asked for the needs of families of all walks of lives (regardless of socio-economic situations, or colour, religion physical and mental capabiities) to be identified, heard and suggested the important outcomes to be achieved in order to provide freedom of choices, voices, rights, needs, balance and equality.

We had many a conversation with the right people to achieve the above - what was possible, what was fair and equal - for equal pay, for superannuation for women, for more access to education and higher education, for money to help families in need, child care etc.

Whilst most women will be ready to support the conversation that women in Canberra are asking to be had today - first, they have to figure out what is the conversation? What is the question? I’m confused!

Some of this behaviour, blame game, not taking responsibiity for self - to the detriment of men - is not where most of us, as women, want to be - nor choose to be.

The women of today have to figure it out - just like we women of yesterday had to - and did so that the women of today and tomorrow could positively pass on the banner to the women of tomorrow.

What might the goddess of love, beauty pleasure, passion and procreation suggest?

Travis Collins: Hometown Called for Talented Country Music Artist

By Emily Gobourg Multiple CMAA Male Artist of the Year and CMA Global Artist Awardwinner, Travis Collins, felt his “Hometown Calling” last weekend at the Freemasons Hotel; where he performed two shows with songs from his latest “Acoustics Sessions” album as part of his recent music tour, “Weekend Throw Down.”

With Molong being the very place that inspired the song “Hometown Calling”, last Saturday’s gigs at the Freemasons were a near and dear appearance for Collins.

“Dad met my mum in Molong going through here as a travelling musician,” said Travis.

“So it’s really special to be playing [Hometown Calling] here.”

Though original plans would see Collins booked to perform the one Molong show, tickets to the nighttime gig sold out early on. Eager to make it work, a second afternoon show was then announced soon after the sellout.

“It’s always really nice performing in the smaller country towns,” Travis said.

“So you always want to be able to get out amongst that sense of community.”

A VIP meet-and-greet took place at the Freemasons just before the daytime session kicked off, where Collins – with close mate and fellow guitarist, Mickey Pye – saw a lucky dozen fans get to enjoy casual chats and banter with the pair, and have signed Polaroid photos taken with the country music star.

Fans also had song requests for Collins at the ready, with “Boots On” and “I Wouldn’t Be Me” taking the on-demand wins, where the acoustics of the old Freemasons building bounced off the walls with a real, melodic ban.

Collins and his crew hit the road the following day to play in Bathurst at Perthville’s Bridge Hotel, for a “sunday sesh” afternoon of acoustics in the beer garden at another well-loved-by-locals country pub.

Let’s Do Yum Cha: Sydneybased Food Truck Collided With Molong Bellies

Sydney-based food truck business “Let’s Do Yum Cha” hit the road for rural Central West towns last weekend, with their Molong appearance a first for the town.

Owners of “Let’s Do Yum Cha”, couple Rowan and Katie, travelled to Molong’s CRT from their Sydneybased commercial kitchen to serve up the mobile “pop up eats” cuisine, cooked by their dim sum chef back home in Carlton.

“We took over the kitchen during COVID last year, and we’re looking to move into wholesale now,” said Rowan.

The popular food truck boasts a simplistic yet hard-to-choose-from menu, starring prawn and chive

dumplings, pork buns, and spring rolls, to name but a few. The menu also offers vegetarian and vegan options, catering to varying crews of food preference across the board.

With busy weeks and even busier weekends on the road, owner Rowan Bates didn’t seem shy of the work involved.

“No pain, no gain.”

The couple will continue to spread the good word of Yum Cha via truck wheels, perseverance, and eager bellies.

Popular Cumnock couple, Maureen and Jim Murray celebrated their 70th Wedding Anniversary with family and friends at Molong’s Freemasons Hotel on Sunday 14 March.

Jim and Maureen photographed right with their sons Paul and Phillp and daughter Barbara, remembered their wedding day on 14 March 1951 at the Cumnock Presbyterian Church - “I was very nervous” Maureen remembered.

Patty Austin (now Burrell) of Cumnock was Maureen’s bridesmaid and little 5 years old sister, Shirley Barnes (now Downey) was flowergirl. Jim’s best man was his brother Keith (now deceased).

“We met at the local footy” said Maureen with the couple sharing their lives together ever since - farming together on the Murray family property - raising their twin sons and daughter - looking after their parents, and working as committed community volunteers.

Locals can vouch for the endless number of delicious cakes and biscuits Maureen has made and donated to support Cumnock community building and charity events.

Congratulations to Maureen and Jim.

MOLONG BANK CLOSURE As most of you will know by now, the Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) announced last week that it will be closing it’s branches in Molong and Blayney on 4 June.

This is bitterly disappointing for our local communities.

This news will be particularly devastating for older Australians, many of whom do not use internet or phone banking. Many of them have given the bank a lifetime of loyalty and this is a shocking way for the bank to repay them for it.

There are also many businesses in and around Molong and Blayney

It was a privilege to be a part of the dedication on Saturday of the new Fairbridge War Memorial which honours the 95 men from Fairbridge farm near Molong who served Australia in the armed forces.

Three made the ultimate sacrifice.

The Australian Government contributed $150,000 to this stunning memorial which ensures future generations will never forget what they did for our nation.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to its construction.

The children of Fairbridge went on to make an enormous contribution to Australia - including in out armed services. This memorial is a beautiful and fitting tribute.

I have personally contacted the CBA’s CEO, Mr Matt Comyn, and asked that these decisions be reversed.

I have also requested a meeting with Mr Comyn and the mayors of both Cabonne and Blayney.

There are very strong and valid arguments for keeping these branches open and that is what I will be seeking.

I will keep our communities updated on any response.

JobTrainer Extended!

Great news for employers looking to take on apprentices - the Australian Government has extended its popular apprentice wage subsidy program for eligible employers and Group Training Organisations.

It is estimated that this demand driven expansion will generate around 70,000 new apprentice and trainee places, with the Government investing around $1.2 billion. Currently 768 apprentices in Calare are registered with the program.

The new initiative called the Boosting Apprenticeships Commencements scheme has removed the cap on the number of contracts eligible and continues to offer a wage subsidy of 50% of an apprentice’s gross wage for employers who take on an apprentice between 5 October 2020 and 30 September 2021. The subsidy is available for a maximum of $7,000 per quarter per eligible apprentice.

UPDATE ON THE VACCINE ROLLOUT Healthcare workers across the region have begun to receive their first COVID vaccine shot.

For our healthcare workers, I am advised that there will be a fixed clinic in Orange taking bookings from Monday, 22 March.

Mobile clinics will also be in operation from Monday, 22 March, visiting smaller health facilities across the health district over coming weeks.

Community members can also start to make bookings at select GP practices from 22 March 2021.

I would like to emphasise that all available vaccines, including both the Pfizer vaccine and the Astra Zeneca vaccine, have been approved as safe, after a stringent assessment by Australia’s renowned Therapeutic Goods Administration.

The COVID vaccines are voluntary. They are not a government conspiracy! I will certainly be getting my jab when my time comes.

In the meantime, please keep in mind that this is one of the biggest peace time exercises in our history and so we will all

Easter orienteering carnival hits Molong & Central West

More than 800 orienteers from across Australia will converge on the Central West over Easter for a major national carnival.

To be based around Orange and Molong, the carnival runs from April 2-5 and will deliver a significant economic boost to the region.

Orienteering is a sport using a map and a compass to run courses in bush, parkland, or built-up areas such as university campuses. The highlight for regular orienteers will be the awesome granite terrain maps at Gumble – used previously

only at state level but now hosting a national event for the first time.

Orange’s location and terrific orienteering terrain made it an ideal choice to host this prestigious carnival - which also acts as an Australian selection trial for the annual junior and senior world championships.

With some of the best orienteering land in Australia, and lots of local attractions, the athletes – who will range in age from eight to 90 – have plenty to look forward to.

On any commonsense interpretation of language, Scott Morrison’s comments in parliament last Thursday deliberately concealed the full truth.

The harsher view is they were downright misleading.

Moreover, the prime minister then resorted to a tactical ploy that flies in the face of any claim the government is dealing with the Brittany Higgins matter with respect.

The cynicism displayed is appalling. Surely when the political workshopping was going on in the Prime Minister’s Office – assuming it happened – someone asked, “Is this a good idea”?

Or have they all lost any compass for what is appropriate parliamentary behaviour? Or any notion the public deserve some frankness?

Consider the sequence of words and actions concerning the inquiry into who knew what when in the Morrison office about the allegation

by Higgins she was raped by a colleague in a ministerial office in 2019.

This inquiry was being undertaken by the Secretary of the Prime Minister’s department, Phil Gaetjens.

Asked last Thursday why the report was taking so long, Morrison told the House: “this work is being done by the secretary of my department.

It’s being done at arm’s length from me. […]

“He has not provided me with a further update about when I might expect that report, but I have no doubt the opposition will be able to ask questions of him in Senate estimates next week.”

Fast forward to Monday’s Senate estimates.

Gaetjens revealed the work is no longer “being undertaken”. He had in fact “paused” his inquiry nearly a fortnight ago, and had immediately told the Prime Minister.

Gaetjens said that on March 9 the Australian Federal Police Commissioner, Reece Kershaw, had told him “it would be strongly advisable to hold off finalising the records of interviews with staff until the AFP could clarify whether the criminal investigation into Ms Higgins’ sexual

assault allegations may traverse any issues covered by the administrative process I was undertaking”.

That same day Gaetjens emailed the Prime Minister’s Office staff “to tell them that I would be not completing the documentation.”

“At that same time, I also told the Prime Minister of that, just in case his staff asked him any questions as to what was going on.”

This was all very cosy.

Morrison did not have the same regard for parliament as Gaetjens had for the PM’s staff.

He did not tell the House or the public “what was going on”.

Indeed, he had Gaetjens appear before Senate estimates – which is highly unusual for a secretary of the prime minister’s department - to deliver, in effect, an “up yours” to the senators.

Gaetjens stonewalled about the inquiry – for which there is now no end date – although he did say he had not interviewed Higgins. His explanation – he was respecting her request for privacy – doesn’t wash.

We don’t know how far Gaetjens got with his investigation before he paused it. We do know he had quite a while prior to March 9 to make progress, because the inquiry was announced mid-February.

On any reasonable work speed, it should have been done and dusted by March 9. Why was it taking so long?

Of course Morrison, under fire at question time, denied being misleading.

He then challenged Anthony Albanese to use “other forms of the House” – in other words, try to move a motion.

Albanese did, twice, and was immediately gagged by the government – twice.

By the end of it all, Morrison had trashed his own credibility and left Gaetjens, who is repeatedly depicted by the opposition as being used as Morrison’s political tool – hung out to dry. (theconversation.com.au)

Applications are open for the second round of Cabonne Council’s 2020-21 Community Assistance Program (CAP) grants, which are designed to provide an ongoing or sustainable benefit to local communities.

Applicants must be a not-for-profit organisation in the Cabonne Local Government Area and be undertaking a project on non-commercial facilities within the Shire.

Grants are provided on a 50:50 basis, but communities can provide their half of the funding through voluntary labour or in-kind contributions.

Applications for CAP funding close at 5pm on Thursday 1 April 2021.

Molong Women’s Bowls Ladies Pennants Tuesday 16/3/21 Tuesday’s Pennants team consisted of Narelle McKenzie, Marianne Riley, Hazel Hamilton and Bron Trethowan. Tuesday’s team was scheduled to compete against Orange Country Club Ladies Bowling Club at Manildra Bowling Club.

The Orange ladies unfortunately took the lead towards the middle of the game and held on to take the win. In spite of encountering a loss the Molong team enjoyed the comradery and competition.

Ladies Pennants Thursday 18/3/21 Thursday’s Pennants team consisted of Sarah Fessey, Hazel Hamilton, Margo Brown and

Denise Lyons .Thursday’s team was scheduled to compete against Parkes Ladies Bowling Club also at Manildra Bowling Club.

The Molong Ladies battled it out to win 1 of 3 games and ended up in front on the overall score board to take our first Pennants win. Well done ladies and we look forward to continuing on our winning way.

Also, a big thankyou to all the ladies at Manildra for their hospitality and providing competitive greens.

Ladies Last Wednesday there were 17 ladies at Cumnock for the combined clubs monthly get together, their course was looking superb, and it was another great day of friendship.

Next Wednesday 31st we will be playing an 18 hole par, hope to see you all there and even some new players.

Sunday Mixed Firstly a shoutout to Royal Molong Golf Club’s great El Presidente and Molong’s answer to Norman Gunston who has injured himself and is in hospital recovering. All the best Bro and we miss you already.

Sunday March 14 saw 7 players turn up under threatening skies and we managed to finish nine holes before a shower of rain. Scott Oates was the winner with the other players close behind.

Manildra Bowling Club have two Pennant Teams - the 4’s and the 7’s with both through to the zone playoffs. Well done to the players and supporters.

The club, like many had a set back with the virus but have hit back with a vengance. We’re open again on Wednesdays as well as Friday Saturday, Sunday. A lot of volunteering from the committee - particularly on on Wednesdays.

Thank you to all involved.

I take my hat off to President Ben and his committee for keeping this wonderful club alive.

Adding to the Club’s sucess is the wonderful Chinese Restauant still arguably prvoviding the best food around. Add the friendly and welcoming atmosphere of the club and members - the TAB and KENO facilities available - I would have to

escapades in Stubba, Bell, Quinney and Bruno.

Unfortunately Bruno didn’t play as he was still recovering from the shock of St George winning the rugby league the night before. Again under threatening skies we played 9 holes with nine players participating and got a Iittle wet playing the Iast couple of holes. The winner was Balley with Quinney as runner up.

Much to the winners displeasure the handicapper has mentioned a smaller handicap next time. Unfortunately Darren found out that you can hit a two acre fairway ten percent of the time but hit a two inch branch ninety percent of the time.

This Saturday March 27 is Cumnock Open Day followed by golf at Royal Molong on Sunday, 8.30am for 9am tee off Everyone is welcome - its a fun game with no one being too serious.

Due to the weather being a bit changeable there were only 6 players last Saturday. We will be there again this Saturday 27th at 5 o’clock.

We will need to decide if we will play on Easter Saturday- and with daylight saving finishing we also need to decide whether we will move the starting time forward.See you soon.

It was a good quality yarding with good numbers of prime yearlings throughout. There were no grown steers yarded, and just limited numbers of grown heifers and cows. It was a typical wet weather market with most of the usual buyers competing for a share of the small numbers.

Young cattle to the trade were 10c to 15c dearer, with prime vealers selling to 486c/kg.

Prime steer yearlings sold from 390c to 440c, while the prime heifer yearlings sold from 388c to 470c/kg. Feeder cattle were 10c to 20c dearer, with the feeder steers selling from 400c to 474c/ kg. Feeder heifers sold from 390c to 448c/kg.

There were no grown steers to quote. The prime grown heifers were 10c dearer selling from 340c to 390c/kg. Cows were 5c dearer with the 2 and 3 scores selling from 250c to 292c/

kg. Prime heavy weight cows sold from 298c to 317c to average 312c/kg. Heavy weight bulls sold to 290c/kg.

SHEEP 17 March 2021

It was a good quality yarding with some outstanding heavy weight lambs along with only odd pens of ideal trade weights. Included in the yarding was a consignment of White Dorper lambs in from the west. Not all the regular buyers were operating in a mostly cheaper market.

Trade lambs were $6 to $8 cheaper with the new season lambs selling from $145 to $196/head.

Trade weight shorn lambs sold from $148 to $202/ head to average between 820c and 860c/kg cwt.

Heavy weight lambs were $12 to $16 cheaper with the shorn lambs weighing 24kg to 30kg selling from $196 to $220 to average between 760c and 780c/kg cwt while the lambs over 30kg sold from $222 to $243 to average 710c/kg cwt. Lambs to the restockers were firm selling from $116 to $181/ head. Hoggets sold to $210/head.

It was a mostly good quality yarding of mutton with crossbred ewes making up the majority.

Merino sheep were around firm while the crossbred ewes were up to $10/head cheaper. Merino ewes sold from $112 to $199 while crossbred ewes sold from $80 to $215/head. Crossbred wethers sold to $230/head. Carcass prices for the better sheep ranged from 600c to 650c/kg cwt.
