... and the whole town turned up
by Paul Mullins
Every town either has, or certainly needs, a person like Yeoval's Alf Cantrell - and his wife Sharon. Last Wednesday they turned up in their hundreds to see Alf unveil his latest "Big Thing", a three-metre-high bronze statue of Banjo Paterson. Standing in front of Alf and Sharon's landmark "Banjo Patterson - more than a Poet" Museum in Yeoval, the statue balances the "Big Banjo Patterson Hat" in the park across the road. The hat itself sits near the large abstract bronze sculpture of famed english sculptor Henry Moore. Alf orchestrated the acquisition of this sculpture back in 2010. Last Wednesday, in front of around 500 people, the bronze Banjo was unveiled (unwrapped more like it) with pomp and ceremony by Ian "Macca" McNamara, legendary ABC Sunday morning "Australia All Over" broadcaster. It would have been the poet's 157th birthday. Alf raised funds for the sculpture including gaining a $7,500 grant under the Australian Government’s Stronger Communities Program. Banjo is depicted in his uniform of Major of the Allied Remount Station in Egypt during the First World War. The statue stands between two centuryold flag poles.
