Match report - Photos Page 8 The Express caught up with Magpies Grand Final Coach, Peter Evans (Evo) after Saturday's 'nail biting' game against the Coonabarabran Kookas. With a final score of 21-21 the 2022 Oilsplus Cup was awarded to both teams.

With some 1500+ supporters filling the Molong Rec. Grounds - there was a sense of relief throughout the crowd when the GF was finally over. Such was the strength of the game - the dedication of each and every player in both

teams to achieve their best for both their team, and their towns.

The Express would like to congratulate the Molong Magpies, Coach Peter Evans and the coaching team who all played a vital role in bringing the Grand Final home to Molong after 9 years. What a day, what a season, what a fantastic team, whata massive benefits the Grand Final brought home to Molong and District.

Peter Evans talks to the Express: "The support from the community was amazing with a crowd of 1500+cheering from the sidelines made up of both Molong Magpies supporters and Coonabarabran Kookas standing side by side cheering on their teams.

As far as the game ... Maggys were the dominant side but a couple of moments let us down. But I will say that it was a reflection on how the Magpies had the ability and the strength after going down - but then their positive team spirit and minds took over and they were able to come together again to show their determination and club spirit.

What the Molong Magpies benefit from is a good club - they have enjoyed the strong support from the Molong Magpies Rugby Club as hundreds of players have benefited from since the club formed back in the 1950's. At the GF on Saturday there were many former Molong Magpies representing generations/decades of Rugby Union in Molong.

o'clock GF curtin-raiser are a good example of the strength of Rugby Union in Molong and the benefits of a good club strong enough to support each one of them (players) as they progress through Magpies RU teams.

It's hard, almost impossible, to field a good side if their club is not right there with them. In Molong - we have the club that is right there with us. It's a great club.

We (club, coaching team, players, supporters) have been building the 2022 Maggy's team over the last 3 years. We worked on a structure that took the team from 4th place during the season - to a fantastic win at Blayney a few weeks ago which won the opportunity for the Molong Grand Final.

It was a joint win for the Maggies's this year ... but next year will see 70 years of rugby and Molong Magpies. It will be one to really celebrate.

Clergate road problems continue

Orange City Council is looking for ways to deal with widespread delays in the construction industry and major increases in building costs, while still delivering major projects for the community of Orange.

A planned upgrade of Clergate Road is the latest project to fall victim to the problem of supply delays and higher costs that are affecting industry across Australia.

This month’s Orange City Council meeting was due to consider tenders for the proposal to upgrade a one-kilometre section of Clergate Road, from Quartz Street to north of Industry Drive, including the construction of a short section of a new road into the Clergate Road industrial subdivision.

The Council meeting decided not to accept any of the tenders and to invite new tenders on a revised project scope. The meeting also decided to buy the pre-cast concrete pipes needed for the project.

The project included widening and strengthening of the existing Clergate Road pavement, construction of approximately 1.1km of underground stormwater drainage, kerb and gutter, new street lighting and an extension of the existing footpath between Quartz Street and Ralston Drive.

It was envisaged these works would take between 9 and 12 months to complete. Council staff

will start site preparation works on water and other services shortly and roads works will commence later in the year.

The project was to be funded by $3.3 million in state and federal government grants.

Orange Mayor Cr Jason Hamling said it was disappointing that tenders received were significantly more than the budget.

“Anyone who’s tried to build a house in recent months, knows how much prices have gone through the roof and how much longer it takes to get building materials,” Cr Jason Hamling said.

“This is an important piece of local infrastructure for the local community, and we want to find ways to get it done.”

“It’s important for the community to know that while we’re going back to the market, we’re also getting on with the project,” Cr Jack Evans said.

“Whenever the tender does get awarded, there’ll still be delays in the delivery of the pre-cast concrete pipes that are needed for the stormwater channels. What we’ve decided to do, is place the order now for the components we need. That gets us in the queue for delivery in time for awarding of the construction contract.”

Centre of Attention: Council appoints Conference on the future of community the region representatives to new Committees

The Councillors of the Central NSW Joint Organisation and members of peak agencies from across the region are conferencing at Charles Sturt University to focus attention on the future of the region. The region will be hearing from a variety of speakers in health, transport, aging, education, energy, water and the circular economy. The attendees will then voice their thoughts on priorities.

“Councils have four years cycles of planning and implementation. A lot has happened in the last four years and it is important to have our Councillors, who are the democratically elected representatives of our communities, inform the direction of the region’s future,” said Cr Kevin Beatty, Chair of Central NSW Joint Organisation and Mayor of Cabonne Council.

RDA Central West is excited to be involved and partner with Central NSW Joint Organisation at this special event,” said Ruth Fagan, Chair, RDA Central West. “We are keen to listen to the voice of the region and advocate for strong regional plans and projects.”

Cabonne Council, at its meeting on Tuesday 23 August appointed community representatives to various new advisory committees following the calling of expressions of interest in July.

The Cabonne Economy, Tourism and Culture Advisory Committee provides advice and make recommendations on all matters pertaining to Cabonne economy, tourism, and culture in accordance with all applicable plans, policies and strategies.

Council received thirteen expressions of interest for seven positions.

Council considered the suitability of the applicant, the applicants experience and interest in tourism and culture, and the location of each applicant.

Appointed were Tania Lampe, Robert Carroll, Chris May, Alf

Cantrell, Ronald Hay, Claire Romeo, Leanne White.

Sean Haynes and Jan Kerr were appointed alternates.

Gallery calls for Council to support dual Central West artists naming of Mt to submit works for annual exhibition Canobolas

Cabonne Council will provide provides a letter of support on the dual naming of Mt Canobolas to include its name in Wiradjuri language of Gaanha-Bula, should an application be lodged to the Geographical Names Board by the Orange Local Aboriginal Lands Council In a Mayoral Minute tabled at Tuesday’s Council Meeting council was informed that Aboriginal place names are an important part of history which Wiradjuri Elders want to help preserve.

To commence the process to seek dual naming of Mt Canobolas the Orange Local Aboriginal Lands Council would need to lodge an application with the geographical names board to seek the dual naming.

Mt Canobolas is a significant natural and cultural feature totally within the Cabonne Shire. Wiradjuri Elders have approached Council to support the proposed dual naming of Mt Canobolas to include its name in Wiradjuri language of Gaanha-Bula as a step towards reconciliation.

The creation story tells of how Wiradjuri Warrior Gaanha-bula killed his younger brother in a dispute over a migay (young woman).

Wahluu fell to the ground and blood spilled into the ground, making Biame (God) angry. Biame made the volcano erupt and lava spewed over Wahluu’s body which is now the shape it is today (Mt Panorama/Wahluu).

Gaanha-bula, full of fear, then fled the site and travelled back to his home at Mt Canobolas. The spirit ancestors were angry with him, for killing his brother. They struck him and made the ground erupt and lava poured out over his body where he laid, which is a constant reminder of what happened.

After celebrating 102 yers of operation in April this year Bill and Marg Carroll’s Molong “Redbank” Corriedale stud is still beating them all.

Orange Regional Gallery is calling for submissions for its annual Here/Now exhibition, which showcases the work of local artists from across the Central West.

The exhibition will be held from Saturday 15 October to Sunday 13 November, with an official opening event on Friday 14 October.

Orange City Council’s Services Policy Committee Chair, Cr Mel McDonell said the annual community exhibition was a highlight of the gallery’s exhibition calendar and last year featured the work of more than 130 artists.

“This exhibition provides a great opportunity for a diverse range of local artists to have their work shown in the Orange Regional Gallery, in a wide variety of mediums,” Cr McDonell said.

“It’s hugely popular, not just with artists, but art-lovers across the Central West, and offers the chance for emerging artists and firsttime exhibitors to have their works displayed alongside some of the region’s most well-known artistic talents.”

Entry is open to all artists over the age of 16 living in the local government areas of Orange, Bathurst, Blayney, Cabonne, Cowra, Forbes, Lachlan Shire, Lithgow, Oberon, Parkes and Weddin Shire.

The submission process is digital. Artists are encouraged to submit up to two new or recent works that have not been exhibited before, including digital images, via email. Gallery staff will select one work from each artist to be exhibited.

Submissions close on Sunday 11 September.

The Scott Morrison horror show has a way to run yet It’s not breaking news that Scott Morrison has trouble with women. His “woman problem” was one factor in his election defeat.

But really, his treatment this week of Karen Andrews, his former home affairs minister, was particularly gratuitous.

By Tuesday Morrison had contacted Mathias Cormann and Josh Frydenberg (both now out of parliament) to apologise personally for failing to tell them he was wading into their portfolios, unannounced.

It took until Thursday morning, after Andrews had said on TV that she hadn’t heard from him and Peter Dutton had publicly told him to contact her, for Morrison to finally get in touch.

Didn’t he think Andrews, who is shadow home affairs minister, deserved the same courtesy as the former finance minister and former treasurer?

If Morrison had called on Tuesday he certainly could have received an earful.

Andrews was declaring he should quit parliament.

The Morrison affair might be about events in the past, but controversy around him will continue to flare, burning the opposition.

The former PM affirmed at his trainwreck Wednesday news conference that he would remain in parliament as “a quiet Australian […] doing my job as a local member”.

He’ll be a pariah in the party room, and a lightning rod for trouble for the Liberals. Fast forward and another book will be published in December, Bulldozed by journalist Niki Savva, a trenchant critic of Morrison. It will bring more stories and bad publicity.

Coalition members are acutely aware of the harm his continuing presence will do them. While most may be shy of saying publicly that he should leave, their blunt criticisms indicate the mood. Anger has deepened during the week.

But Morrison doesn’t have an alternative job. And there’s the question of a byelection.

Maybe his friends could help with the job search. The byelection is a weighing of downsides. Which would be worse: Morrison remaining in full target range or the hazards and cost of a Cook contest?

If he could be persuaded to go soon – as he is expected to do at some stage in

the term – it would benefit the Dutton opposition.

There was a substantial swing against him in Cook at the election but he ended with a hefty 62.44% of the two-party vote.

We see some huge swings in byelections these days, as when former NSW premier Gladys Berejiklian resigned (although her seat was retained). But Cook would be hard for Labor or a high-profile independent to win, and Liberal sources believe it would be held. The Liberals could benefit if they ran a credible local female candidate. (She could campaign on “Solving the woman problem” – just joking.)

The NSW Liberals, facing a March election, wouldn’t welcome an expensive federal byelection. But they’ve got bigger problems and the horror publicity around Morrison is unhelpful to the Liberal brand generally.

Having enjoyed days of political free kicks, the Albanese government is mulling its next steps as it awaits advice, due on Monday, from the Solicitor-General on the legality of Morrison’s actions.

Separately, Morrison’s failure to inform parliament he’d had himself appointed to multiple ministries could be referred to the privileges committee.

It might also be (though this isn’t clear yet) that the present House of Representatives practice needs clarifying or strengthening on disclosure.

If Morrison’s conduct becomes an issue on the floor of the house, opposition members will have a delicate dance, between defending their former leader and distancing themselves from him.

Albanese has been heavily milking the story. On Thursday he said: “The issue

isn’t whether an apology has been given to Mr Frydenberg or Karen Andrews or others. The issue is that the apology is owed to the Australian people.”

But the government knows it must be careful not to overstep the mark – that it must follow the proper procedures, especially in parliament.

Also, it will want the public’s attention on its own agenda. The next parliamentary sitting comes only a couple of days after the jobs summit.

The government will need focus on the positives out of that gathering. Many voters might be appalled about Morrison, but for most there are more immediate preoccupations, especially the rising cost of living.

Former ministers weren’t the only ones in for a nasty surprise with the revelations that flowed from the publication of Plagued, by Simon Benson and Geoff Chambers. Governor-General David Hurley has taken a degree of pillorying this week that has probably shocked him.

Obviously Hurley knew about the appointments because he formally made them. In doing so, he was acting quite properly, following government advice.

But the issue around him has become, did he do enough? Critics say no – that he should have questioned this unusual course and warned that the appointments should be disclosed.

Hurley is clearly feeling sensitive. He has issued two statements explaining his conduct, the second saying he had “no reason to believe that appointments would not be communicated”.

We don’t know precisely, but quite

likely what happened was that Hurley got the paperwork – the process was administrative, Morrison was not sworn in face to face – and regarded it as routine, not giving it further thought.

Remember also, the process was strung out, with a maximum of two ministries involved at one time.

Hurley said: “It is not uncommon for ministers to be appointed to administer departments other than their portfolio responsibility”. True, but the prime minister is not just any minister. Hurley didn’t twig that he was in fact dealing with something very uncommon.

Governors-general vary in how they operate in the more informal part of their role, which is to question and counsel.

Paul Hasluck, who held the office during 1969-1974, said in his 1972 lecture, “The Office of Governor-General”, that “the personality and qualifications” of the occupant may affect how they do the job.

(Hurley is a former chief of the defence force and a former NSW governor.)

Hasluck went on to say the governorgeneral’s “dominant role is as one who uses his influence to ensure that there is care and deliberation, a close regard both for the requirements of the law and the conventions of the Constitution and for the continuing interests of the whole nation”.

The influence of governors-general will vary according to how they are respected, in terms of wisdom, experience, discretion and the like, Hasluck observed. But the governor-general’s “influence would disappear altogether if he were thought of as one who would do whatever he was told without asking the reasons why”.

Albanese is backing Hurley. As he should, even if Hurley fell short of what he might have done to curb Morrison. But it is clear Hurley’s reputation has been damaged by what he – apparently – didn’t do.

Molong & Coonabarabran Grand Final Tied

Saturday saw a possible record crowd of around 1500+ gather at the Molong Rec. Grounds to witness a thrilling 2022 Grand Final of the OilsPlus Cup. A tied score at the official full-time saw extra time of 10 minutes each way granted to the Molong Magpies and Coonabarabran Kookas. At the final hooter the scoreboard showed 21 all - another tied score - giving the 2022 Grand Final to both Molong Magpies and Coonabarabran Kookas.

The supporters of both sides turned up in force looking forward to a tight and physical contest - they were not disappointed!

From the moment Will Oldham kicked off it was obvious both teams were ready to play with strong running and ferocious tackling.

The game was 8 minutes old when Molong received a penalty from a lineout from which Oldham made no mistake. For the next 20 minutes both siders tested the others defence with the Molong fowards in Cooper, Packham and Travis outstanding. During this time Dean Butler and Jim Gavin came on and made an immediate impact with their strong running.

Both sets of outside backs weren’t seeing much ball - but when they did were making good ground.

Good kicking from Molong fullback Zac. White got the Magpies in to the Kookas 22 from where Will Oldham kicked his second penalty for a 6-0 score line.

The last four minutes of the half saw Molong apply sustained pressure with good ball retention and from a 5 metre lineout penalty Captain, Zac White scored in the corner. With the kick unsuccessful Molong went to the break with a handy 11-0 lead.

Coonabarabran kicked off to start the second half and after a penalty found themselves deep in Molong territory.

From near the line Luke Mitchell scored a good try following a charge down and with the conversion by Nick Willoughby the score was 11-7. During this time Molong suffered 2 significant injuries, firstly to halfback Max Pearce and then Jordy Packham who boh bravely stayed on and continued to play well.

The ground was in surprisingly good condition after all of the rain and both sets of backs were making some penetrating runs.

More long kicks from Will Oldham and Zac White along with relentless tackling pressure resulted in a penalty to Molong.

Oldham was again successful to have Molong in front with 4 minutes to go 14-7.

With only two minutes to go Molong missed a penalty which would have won the game - but Coonabarabran worked their way to the other end of the ground and scored beside the posts with less than a minute to go. The resulting conversion made the full-time score 14-14.

To decide the winner - extra time of 10 minutes each way was to be played.

Coona. started as they had finished in normal time and scored early in extra time with the try converted they lead 21-14. Molong had a chance late when pressing the line and made a charge down only to lose the ball from a scrum.

The final 10 minutes started with winger, Joe Reid crossing in the corner and Will Oldham converting with a magnificent kick from the sideline The score 21-21.

Both sides threw everything into the remaining minutes. But the game finished tied at extra full-time.

This really was a fitting result as neither side deserved to lose.

At the presentation both sides were presented with medals. Both Captains spoke well and were very gracious to their opponents.

Joint best on ground awards were presented to Molong’s Jordy Packham and Coonabarabran’s Brad Pugh.

JUNIOR SOCCER

After having a week off from soccer as the grounds were to wet, the teams played away on the weekend and from all reports the kids all enjoyed the wet and muddy fields.

Under 5 Phoenix played Waratahs Rebel ‘s and we’re down a few players but with some help from the Currawongs who had a bye they were able to run a great team.

Everyone had fun and they won 6-1 with Wyatt Jeffries getting player of the week.

Under 5 Condors played Barnies at a very muddy Jack Brabham Soccer field.

There was lots of great passing with Condors scoring many goals for a good win.

The boys really enjoyed playing in the different conditions. Joey Piggot was awarded player of the week.

Under 8 Budgies played Waratahs Braves and had a win. It was a tight game with lots of big kicks. Gordon Bunting got player of the week.

Under 11 Magpies played Ex-Services Lions it was a very competitive game and Magpie’s were 1 nil down at half time but came back to win 3 -1 at full time. Angus Reid did some great kicks and Harry Lee was Player of the Week We play at home this weekend, please check the ODFA website for any game changes.

Under 6 Vultures The mighty Vultures braved the elements at Jack Brabham and proved that when it comes to dirty play, they’re in a class of their own. They had a convincing win against Panthers Nash Jeffries was Player of the week.

It was a good quality yarding with good numbers of young cattle to suit the processors, feeders, restockers and backgrounders. There were a few lots of well finished grown steers and heifers and there were 165 cows yarded. Most of the usual buyers were operating along with the return of a couple of feeder orders.

Young cattle to the trade were firm to 4c cheaper with prime vealers selling to 557c/kg.

Prime steer yearlings sold from 499c to 550c while the prime heifer yearlings sold from 482c to 530c/kg. Feeder steers were 11c dearer while the feeder heifers were firm to 4c/kg cheaper.

Feeder steers sold from 470c to 577c while the feeder heifers sold from 470c to 524c/kg. Young cattle to the restockers were 12c to 18c dearer with the young steers selling from 488c to 664c while the young restocker heifers sold from 450c to 650c/kg.

Grown steers and heifers were firm with the prime grown steers selling from 420c to 488c while the prime grown heifers sold from 426c to 499c/kg. Cows were 8c to 12c dearer with the

CTLX SHEEP 17 August It was a much better quality yarding with some good runs of well finished shorn lambs both trade and heavy weights. There was also a large consignment of young store lambs suitable for the restockers along with good numbers of hoggets. Most of the usual buyers were operating in a stronger market.

Lightweight lambs to the processors were up to $14 dearer with the 12kg to 18kg 2 scores selling from $80 to $130/head. Trade lambs were $17 dearer selling from $120 to $193 to average between 690c and 765c/kg cwt. Heavy weight lambs were $15 to $18 dearer with the lambs over 24kg selling from $175 to $203/head to average between 730c and 745c/kg cwt. A single pen of light trade weight Merino lambs sold for $125/head. Lambs to the restockers were cheaper selling from $40 to $104/head. A pen of lambs sold to the feeders for $62/head.

Hoggets sold to $175/head.

It was a mixed yarding of mutton where lightweight sheep were $5 cheaper and the better medium and heavy weights were $5 to $7/ head dearer. Merino ewes sold from $60 to $149 while crossbred ewes sold from $130 to $160/ head. A pen of Merino wethers sold for $165 and crossbred wethers sold for $160/head. The restockers paid $120 for a pen of Merino ewes and $133/head for a pen of crossbred ewes.

Molong Golf SUNDAY Another disappointing roll up for golf at the Royal Molong golf course on Sunday with only four players making an appearance.

The course was a bit wet under foot but it was a pleasant morning for golf with a bit of warmth on your back when the sun was out.

We played an individual stroke event where Al was the winner and managed a couple of pars with the others not far behind.

We were a bit late hitting off because Bro decided to show off some of his rodeo skills.

You see Bro has a sore foot and so as not to exacerbate the problem he likes to have the use of a golf buggy. With no golf buggies available he decided to use John Wright’s single seat gofer style buggy. (Below) This buggy has a throttle similar to a motorcycle so being a motorcyclist from way back you’d think he would know how to operate it. But no, even before he got it out of the shed he had it up the wall, goodness knows what he was doing.

When he got it out on the fairway you’d swear he was riding a bucking horse the way it was trying to toss him off. He wouldn’t have made the

He finally managed to tame the beast but not without a few more incidents. It was certainly a good laugh for those of us watching his antics.

His wife, Christine, would have been wondering how he could get so dirty from playing golf. I think he’s talking about using it for the Molong Open tournament on the weekend. I hope he’s got it under control by then. There are a couple of photos on the instagram page “clubsandballs” of Bro on the gofer. [and below].

It was disappointing to notice that someone is driving on and across the wet fairways and leaving quite an indentation from their tyres. If people are exercising their dogs or whatever we ask that you please keep off the fairways especially since it has been so wet.

The Molong Open Golf tournament is on this Sunday with a 9am for 9.30am tee off.

Given good weather indications are there will be a good roll up of players from other clubs, which we hope eventuates. I’m sure President Ged will be on hand to make an opening address and get proceedings under way.
