Let’s get together on Australia Day Inside your
Express this week…
Cabonne’s ‘Hidden Treasures’ Australia Day celebrations in Molong, Cumnock, Manildra and each village across Cabonne Country have become special community gathering days of picnics, food, awards, competitions, games ... This year, for the first time, Citizenship Ceremonies will be held at the Cabonne Australia Day celebrations where residents will be able to meet, greet, welcome and congratulate new citizens over a cuppa. A feature of the Molong celebrations will be the announcement of the 2019 Best Damper Award - a hotly contested competition between the traditional camp-oven experts (like Jim Nesbitt, John Hale, Cameron Wild, Jack Mann, Terry Bennett) and the non-traditional gourmets (like Kath Boyan, Kerry Nicholls and those newcomers willing to have a crack at Paul Mullins recipe on P.8 of last week’s Express). There will be breakfast, music, morning tea, lunch, a hotly contested cricket match and plenty of cool activities for the kids. Check it out ... it’s a great dcommunity day out. (See P 6)
“Heritage” rules in Molong : Necessary or Stifling?
IN CABONNE
What’s on in your town P.9
Restoration of the historic Waterview Wharf Workshops at Balmain, Sydney by Rozzi Smith
We hear it often - “why is it sometimes hard to progress through Cabonne Council’s DA process when “Heritage” is involved. If this question is still being asked today by the Molong community - when in front of this progressive rural town lie many opportunities to advance us to an interesting and exciting future - I have to ask the people elected Cabonne Councillors “what are you doing about it?” Somehow in Balmain - vibrant colours are able to be used on heritage buildings (see above). Further examples exist in most rural towns, cities, regional areas of NSW/Australia. Except, it seems ‘not in Molong’ where we seem to be
stuck with a very boring heritage colour palette, streetscape and several heritage buildings that remain looking lost and dilapidated. We do not encourage owners and landlords to take some pride and invest in their properties (often the very reason they become non productive). Should Council allow them to do this? Witness the story of the “Blue” bank building (see page 8). Council appears to be deferring to their advisors. So, I ask Cabonne Councillors - use your decision-making/ leadership qualities to urge Council management, advisors, and committees to bring to an end at least one of the constraints holding Molong back from the future it wants ... and deserves.
