Early 2021 will see the commencement of work on one of the most significant new buildings in the district for decades. The new library and community centre will replace the Molong Community Hall, Mitchell Room and adjacent residence.

This week we provide a fascinating history of the former "School of Arts and Supper Room" as it was once known.

The buildings were the centre of Molong and the district's cultural and social life for over 140 years.

2020 : A year of achievements & challenges

See how your Express saw it on 2020's front pages inside 2020 ended on a high note for grain farmers who had spent the past few years facing the daily challenges of the long drought, lack of crops, lack of water, destocking to suit the climatic conditions. It was a grim time for farming families throughout Cabonne Country - and across the state. It's been a wonderful sight to see the headers working again, day and night, harvesting what did become a much better year for grain farming.

2020 : Cabonne Country’s achievements and challenges

Mayor of Cabonne, Cr Kevin Beatty sends his best wishes to the residents of Cabonne Country ... and reports on the year that was.

“Well I know it’s been said a thousand times and I am sure it will be said many more, but 2020 was a year we are unlikely to forget. The challenges that the world, the nation and our community has faced are definitely ones for history books. As 2020 comes to a close however I think I can also say that the Community of Cabonne has stepped up to these challenges as well as meeting them with the character that we all know makes our place in the world a great place to live.

We started the year dealing with the ongoing and devastating impacts of a sustained and intense drought, the anxiety and physical impacts of the heat and the dry conditions were made even more difficult with the long lasting and unprecedented smoke haze from the black summer bushfires that thankfully did not occur in local areas, however their presence was very much felt. The Molong water supply was under threat and we got to unprecedented low levels with only weeks left of supply. Thankfully Council staff worked hard with neighbouring Orange City Council to establish an emergency supply to get us through until finally we had some very welcome and much needed rains.

Late February to early March saw us all dealing with the first wave of COVID and the community responded well to the health regulations as we all buckled down and adapted to the “new normal”. Council had its challenges but was able to keep on delivering services in this difficult time

with operational staff going about their work day to day as critical workers and support staff adapting to working from home and all the many measures no doubt all of us had to deal with in our work lives.

There has been some significant projects completed and progressing across the shire throughout the year. In particular the Cabonne Community Centre has been fully designed and is now out for tender, due to commence in late March of next year. We received some great results with grants - securing with MAG, Federal funding for new lights at the Molong Rec valued at over $300K. Importantly we also received $1.2M from the NSW Government to secure our water supply with a bore established near our Council Depot in Molong that will be able to see us sustain equivalent to Level 5 restricted supply for over a year if we were to run out of water from the Molong Creek Dam. This will see us in a very much better situation when sadly the drought threat comes back some time - hopefully a fair way down the track.

There have been a number of other good projects completed from the drought stimulus funding around Molong including the cricket nets and starting a refurbishment of the Molong Rec amenities block. Council is also preparing for next year’s grants and has consulted widely with the Molong community with regards to an exciting upgrade to the main street and surrounding precincts.

This was a very thorough process and we got great feedback from the community through out. Whilst this is the Molong Express there are also some great projects being implemented across the Shire and a lot of our local halls and parks are getting

upgrades as well as some key projects announced in federal and state funding for Canowindra and Eugowra. It was great to see Cumnock finish a first rate upgrade to the recreation area there led by the progress association partnering with Council. Things look promising in talking to our State and Federal elected officials - we are well placed to be in the running for some more funding in 2021 to make a range of new plans become projects on the ground.

Roads are always a priority for Cabonne and last financial year Council spent $12.6M on its road network - $37kms of re-seals, 36kms of gravel re-sheeting and 9kms of new seals. We have 2000kms of road equivalent to stretching from here to Cairns so it is a big task maintaining it.

Just as the welcome rains bring weeds to our farmers it also brings pot holes to our road network. I know and hear regularly of these outbreaks on the networks but I want you know our crews are working hard to get on top of them with the welcome increased harvest traffic only adding to the strain on the infrastructure after a long dry period. On a positive there have been some good improvements to Banjo Paterson Way and Escort Way east of Cudal, also 10kms of new seal for Baldry Road and sealing to Rutherford Road to name a few of the more local projects.

Council looked to help Molong and the other villages celebrate Christmas a bit more this year with our Christmas lights competition as well as shop local initiatives and supporting the great initiative by local Molong businesses to have a Christmas shopping night that I had great feedback was a real positive for Molong and some well needed festive

by Peter Batten, Chairperson On behalf of MAG I wpould like to thank the Molong & District community f0r their support in what has been a year of many challenges. However, the members and executive of MAG pressed on - achieving the completion and commencement of many projects.

There is much to look forward to in the Molong community - with many new faces (new residents) to town, new businesses opening up throughout the year, and pleasingly, more to come.

Molong is indeed progressing very well with families, singles, retirees moving to town and district - helping to form an even more wonderful rural community. One that still offers peace, safety, tranquility, a range of community and sporting assets (with more to come), fantastic schools,

pre-school and child care, and a wide and varied range of shops and business activity.

2021 will see the MAG program kick off with a community Australia Day event at the Rec. grounds, the inaugural Banjo Paterson Poetry Brawl on 13 February (see advertisement front page), and the return of the Molong Village Markets (first one planned for the Easter weekend).

Not forgetting MAG’s 20th birthday celebrations ... and the introduction of Business Breakfasts with guest speakers.

MAG would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a safe and joyful festive season.

We look forward to working with each and all in 2021 to further progress Molong into a rural town of the future, for the future.

Our services include helping people in need to pay for their utility bills, food, clothing, school support, drought relief, COVID-19 relief etc.

Our volunteers welcome people who come on in to our Bank Street premises for a coffee and a chat.

Particularly those experiencing a difficult time and for those who live alone who seek company, friendship, a cuppa and a chat.

Our volunteers love to help others and are proud of what they can do to help.

loving place where friendliness and comforting thoughts are willingly given by our volunteers.

All are keen to put something back into the communities they call home.

New Minister for A Christmas Message Susie Elelman - Australia Day Ambassador Anglican Parish

Congregations of the Anglican Parish of Cudal-Molong have welcomed the Rev. David Blackmore who was commissioned for the Ministry in a special service at St. John’s Anglican Church, Molong, last Saturday.

The Bishop of Bathurst, The Rt Mark Calder, introduced David and his wife Sue to the congregation and to the Parish which covers the Cabonne areas of Cudal, Molong, Manildra and Toogong. A vast area representing committed communities covering towns, villages and farming lands.

The Rev. David, who has come to the Parish from Bourke, will be officiating at Christmas Eve and Christmas Day services this coming weekend. See P.14 for service times and locations.

You may be wondering what is going on in this world, are we losing control or are heading for an extinction event. Who will save us putting our trust in “experts” and governments and being disappointed by both?

When we understand that “Each of us is both a pawn and a prize in a cosmic warfare - a hyper-dimensional conflict between good and evil.” quote Chuck Missler.

So this time of the year we celebrate Christmas, what are we celebrating. What happened that is making this and remarkable and exciting time of the year a time to celebrate. What are we celebrating, we are celebrating the birth of the King that rules all Kings and Kingdoms, (Isaiah 40:22) The King that sits enthroned above the circle of the earth, and its people are like grasshoppers.

The King that existed before the creation of the earth.

About 2020 years ago (John 1:14 NIV) God came in the form of a man and lived among us. He was born in a rural village to a peasant girl named Mary. And therein lies the reason to celebrate (Isaiah 9:6) For to us, a child is born, to us, a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

While it is good to celebrate and give gifts and spread as much cheer as you can, it is also a time of the year to take stock of our lives and to ask your self where we are standing in the cosmic war between good and evil. Each and every one of us will get to stand before the King of Kings and give an account of our lives. The important thing is, is your name written in the book of life. To get your name written in the book of life, you need to commit your undying allegiance to The King of Kings to the child born unto us, to Jesus, the son of God.

Cabonne Council has announced that Susie Elelman will be the Australia Day Ambassador in 2021.

Susie Elelman is truly the epitome of a multi-media broadcaster and has been deservedly described as the most versatile, informed and professional person in Australian media today.

Author, TV presenter, radio broadcaster, reporter and producer are just some of the many hats she has worn throughout an impressive media career spanning four decades.

Susie Elelman is a name synonymous with daytime television and most recently voiced her opinion in the Chatroom on Channel 9’s News Now and as a regular panellist on Studio 10 on the Ten and WIN Networks.

Susie’s long list of television credits include more than eight years spent alongside Bert Newton as a presenter and reporter on Good Morning Australia and seven years with Larry Emdur & Kylie Gillies on The Morning Show.

Susie was Host and Executive Producer of her own national, daily, variety and lifestyle TV show SUSIE & then co-hosted & co-produced the national live news & current affairs show DAILY with Susie & Bianca both on the WIN/9 Network.

Susie also went head to head with Stan Zemanek as a longstanding panellist on Network 10 & Foxtel’s Beauty and the Beast.

Some of Susie’s many other roles have included working as a researcher & reporter on HINCH and as a reporter on the national travel show Postcards Australia.

The Water decade

by Paul Mullins Welcome back Express readers and welcome to the 2020's.

As we said in our wrap-up last December, the issue of the 2000's decade was the HUB waste dump proposal at Euchareena Rd. The local consuming issue throughout the 2010's was the fight against forced council amalgamations.

Well, for the 2020's you can bet it's going to be about water.

On page 4 we report on proposals (finally) to prepare the groundwork for augmentation of Central Tablelands Waters' (CTW) Lake Rowlands dam. Note that CTW supplies water to most Cabonne towns, and, through interconnecting pipelines will augment Orange, which itself will back up Molong, Cumnock and Yeoval water security.

But note especially that “CTW has been lobbying continuously for over 20 years for the enlargement of Lake Rowlands."

The cost of almost doubling the capacity of the Lake Rowlands dam is around $10 million.

The new Sydney Football Stadium is going ahead at a cost of $729 million.

Ah yes - it's going to be the water decade.

Hay Yabbies hit the Molong track

A severe storm warning issued for Molong on Australia Day last Sunday actually happened.

Surprising the locals "Nah! Won't happen ...We've heard it all before." ... However, this time luck was on Molong's side with 90 ml (3.5 inches) of torrential rain recorded at the Railway Station in less than an hour.

100+ ml being recorded around the hospital hill and some areas within the township recording not much at all.

It was good to see the Molong Creek receiving a much needed 'flush'.

Unfortunately, as happens during long drought topsoil washed into a number of residences. See P4.

40Km/h speed limit in Molong CBD?

Molong residents are being asked to provide feedback on a request for a 40km/h speed limit in the town’s CBD. The Cabonne Local Traffic Committee is seeking public comments on a request for the implementation of the 40km/h speed limit in the lower section of Bank Street between Gidley and Watson Streets.

Based on the feedback from the community, the traffic committee will request Roads and Maritime Services to conduct a speed limit review of the street, which is currently has a 50km/h limit.

Public comment and submissions may be submitted to the General Manager, PO Box 17 Molong 2866 or via email council@cabonne. nsw.gov.au until 5pm on Friday 28 February 2020. (See ad page 10).

The third test match between Australia and India at the SCG looks to be in extreme doubt. The 3rd test match should be rescheduled and played at Trager Park in Alice Springs.

Water from Orange arrives

First up, to be fair, we should point out that its not strictly Orange's own water.

A pipeline from Central Tablelands Water's Carcoar Dam was completed last year. Orange also draws water from the Macquarie river via a pipeline from Long Point.

Also, mid last year, the NSW Government announced a grant of $5.5 million to upgrade the regional water pipeline from Cowra (Wyangala Dam) to Carcoar.

The Orange - Molong pipeline is but another link in networking water throughout the region - so that water can be distributed in emergencies when needed. Much like electricity.

Orange City and Cabonne Councils are commissioning a new pipeline, which will help to secure Molong’s water supply.

The commissioning of the $16 million pipeline is another major milestone for the Government’s $37 million Central West Water Security Project, which also included the construction of the pipeline from Orange to Blayney and Carcoar.

With no significant inflows into Molong Creek Dam, the commissioning of the pipeline will enable Cabonne Council to buy a small amount of water each day to ensure Molong does not run dry.

Despite Molong residents using below their targeted daily water consumption, Cabonne Mayor Kevin Beatty said the water now was required until other options currently being developed by the Council are put in place.

“We are working with the State Government and neighbouring water authorities on ongoing solutions to the current situation,” Cr Beatty said.

Latest readings showed Molong residents used 133 litres per person per day, well below the 160 litres target for the current Level 5 restrictions.

Cr Beatty thanked Orange City Council for its cooperation in this regional water security measure, saying it demonstrated the strong working relationship and cooperation between the two councils.

As is usual when there is a change of water source, residents may notice some difference in the taste and odour of the water, however there is no cause for concern.

Some coronavirus restrictions could be eased next month - Premier

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian says the state's tough coronavirus social-distancing rules could be relaxed as early as next month.

On Tuesday, she described social distancing as "a way of life" that would remain until a COVID-19 vaccine was found.

When asked yesterday about the chances of the restrictions being eased on May 1, she said that was possible, and that the laws would be assessed on a month-by-month basis, based on health advice.

Tony Lloyd never misses an ANZAC Day service and march. This year was even more special for the Molong grazier and former shearing contractor when grandaughter Isabella invited her special grandfather to stand with her at dawn at the front gate of the family property, Gundawanna. As the sun rose, Isabella played the Last Post and the Reveille on her saxophone with Tony delivering the Ode and both standing together in one minute's silence to remember. "I was very proud of Isabella for organising what was a very special ANZAC Day service for me" said Tony. "She is a wonderful young woman".

olong cannot afford to sit back and miss out on an opportunity created by the NSW Government to restore passenger train services to country areas.

The opportunity? In 2019 the NSW Government's Deputy Premier/ Nationals Leader John Barilaro announced a commitment of $2.8 billion to upgrade and improve the current services provided by the XPT, Xplorer and Endeavour passenger trains on rural NSW tracks.

Last week members of the Orange Rail Action Group (ORAG) visited the Molong Railway Station to discuss with locals the opportunity to reopen the Molong Railway Station for passengers to embark/disembark.

A contract has been signed for the $2.8 billion project to design, build and maintain the new regional rail fleet, including replacements for the XPT service.

It includes the construction of the fleet, which will offer 10 regional intercity trains, nine short regional trains and 10 long regional trains, as well as the establishment of a rail maintenance facility.

Transport and Infrastructure Minister Andrew Constance said the fleet would replace the current XPT, XPLORER and Endeavour trains. Mr Constance said he

Ground Master Plans go public

Following a series of workshops with key stakeholders in the community a final concept design has been produced for the new Library and Community Centre in Molong.

The final concept, titled Option D, has captured the needs and expectations of the community uncovered during the workshop process, then aligned these expectations within the allocated construction budget.

The final concept design provides the layout, elevations and functionality of the building to move the project on to the next phase of detailed design and approvals.

A development application (DA) is required to be lodged with preliminary planning works underway in preparation for submission in June 2020. At the DA submission stage, there will be further opportunity for public viewing and comment

on the detailed design.

Detailed engineering design will commence on structural and service components of the building and is expected to be completed towards the end of the calendar year. Tendering of the project is expected to be undertaken early in 2021 with construction to be completed by May 2022.

Cabonne Council will place the three draft Molong Recreational Ground Master Plans on 28 day exhibition seeking further public feedback.

Council has collaborated with the Molong Advancement Group in the development of three master plans for the key recreational areas in Molong: the Molong Showground – Golf Club Precinct, Hunter Caldwell Precinct and the Doctor Ross Memorial Precinct (known as the Molong Rec).

The planning process, facilitated by Sala4D consultants, included well attended workshops and consultation with key stakeholders, sporting associations and user groups.

The draft plans have subsequently undergone additional consultation in their current forms with representatives from key user groups at workshops held on 9 June 2020 at the Council Chambers and 16 June 2020 at Molong RSL. Sala4D consultants also briefed Council on the draft plans at its last workshop held on 9 June 2020.

Council and the Molong Advancement Group will now seek feedback and submissions from the wider community with regard to the draft master plans and proposes to place them on public exhibition in line with Council’s Community Participation Plan.

Katelan Phipott - achieving her dream

Since she was a young girl, Katelan Philpott of Molong has had a dream - one which she has steadily worked towards since making her future career decision whilst in Year 3 at the Molong Central School. “I’ve always wanted to be a lawyer” said a confident Katelan.

The daughter of Molong Post Office and Newsagency owners, Kaylene and Matthew Philpott (grandaugter of Sue and Mick Philpott) Katelan is now well positioned to achieve her dream after receiving her HSC results last week which she describes as “roughly what I thought I was capable of achieving”.

Already accepted into the University of Newcastle (via First Round offers) the young born, raised and schooled Molong woman is preparing to head to the big lights, great halls, lecture rooms and on-campus accommodation offered by the uni.

This will be Katelan’s first time away from family and home. A daunting thought - but one where this dedicated 18 year old student will undoubtedly settle in well.

“I’ve been accepted into the Bachelor of Business/Law (Hons) - a five and a half year course” at the Uni which Katelan chose via the School’s Recommendation Scheme. Whilst this will be a ‘hard slog’ - the young woman from Molong has a proven track record

when it comes to self motivation and knuckling down to study.

Although Katelan is also aware that even though a model student she has had to work hard to achieve some areas of the HSC curriculum.

Although majoring in English extension II in HSC - creative writing was not always her strength. How did she improve to receive her impressive ATAR score? “I had to work at it - I wrote lots of drafts and I worked hard with Mr and Mrs Eccleston (teachers at MCS). “My non-fiction manifesto on Youth Activism (6,000 words) “helped me to achieve a good ATAR score” said a very proud Katelan of her achievement.

Vice-Captain in Year 12 at the Molong Central School - Katelan has enjoyed an impressive ‘all rounder’ ability with her sporting pursuits including Rep. Hockey at the Orange Regional level, and a member of the Western Representative Debating Team - a team who came second in the NSW State Debating Championships. “I won the Legacy Public Speaking Challenge three years in a row.” No doubt Katelan will find her way to the Uni debating teams to increase her skills - and after graduation in the law courts where she is keen to represent clients in litigation and contract law matters.

Her career goal includes completing

her double degree - then working in a law firm with clients - and returning to study to enter the Bar.

What is it like growing up in a small town like Molong?

“It’s good when everyone knows who you are - especially at school where the teachers know students by their name - not by a number.

“It’s good when everyone knows who you are.”

Does it take a community to raise a child? “I think that’s true” responded Katelan. “I think other people’s thoughts and views provides a perspective on life and is helpful when making my own decisions. I make my own decisions based on taking a look at all sides of the argument/story.

Come February Katelan will be heading off to Newcastle and oncampus living - an adventure about to unfold on her next journey in life.

In the meantime, she is happy working behind the counter in her parent’s newly created Post Office/ Newsagency in Bank Street.

We wish this lovely young Molong woman great success, achievement, and a safe, happy adventure.

After living on the Bogan River in the western regions, Kate Gadsby now resides at ‘Nubrygyn’ with her husband Allan. Born in the Nubrygyn district, she is, along with her family, a fourth-generation owner, farmer and grazier.

It has been a long while since water has spilled over the Molong Dam wall due to the severity of the long drought. But things have changed since the recent heavy rains. Now filled to capacity, this unique Molong water supply, is nestled amongst the hills with excess waters flowing over the dam wall into the Molong Creek.

The above photos were taken on Monday by the Express during an authorised visit. "I had often heard about the Molong Dam" said Rozzi Smith "and keen to take a look after reading in old copies of the Express the debate that happened at the time about whether it be built - or not.

"It was a visionary project which, today's climate proves that it was needed. However, back then - the times were difficult so it is understandable how people felt about what would have been a 'costly project'.

"The water is piped to the Molong Water Supply and when commissioned will provide the villages of Cumnock and Yeoval with a better water supply. "No entry - locked gates, and security cameras are used in and around the Molong Dam site, for obvious reasons" said Rozzi. "It's a definite 'no go' area.The Express is pleased to be able to provide the above photos."

$3.8 m to boost road safety and jobs in Cabonne only improve road safety for locals, but also for those travelling to and from the area.

“As the national economy continues to open up post COVID and remote working arrangements are increasing, it’s never been more important to improve road safety and accessibility for locals and others travelling to and from our regions.

“This is a fantastic partnership between the Australian Government and NSW Government that opens up valuable jobs to our region over the next 12 months as councils get cracking on delivery,” said Mr Gee. The investment will see a total of $382 million in joint funding allocated nationally to shovel-ready projects that are able to start within the next 12 months, driving an estimated 3,500 jobs in regional NSW. Projects will need to be delivered within two years of receiving funding, to ensure that local communities are benefiting sooner.

Round one of the Fixing Local Roads program will see $250 million invested in 258 projects across 83 Local

Government Areas.

The project proposes to seal from 1 to 11 kilometres of the worst sections of the following roads in Cabonne.

Key actions include grading and stabilisation (where required) existing pavement, redefining drains, vegetation removal (where required) and sealing of an existing gravel road.

The roads are: Yuranigh Road, Molong Old Canobolas Road, Borenore Frewin Road, Borenore Baldry Road, Baldry Waldegrave Road, Forest Reefs Belgravia Road, Belgravia Tantallon Road, Belgravia Caves Creek Road, Nashdale Taylors Road, Manildra Rosamel Lane Road, Manildra Rutherford Road, Molong Paling Yards Loop Road, Cudal.

The Australian and NSW Governments will join forces to turbocharge a program which will improve roads in Orange communities while creating local jobs.

The $3,759,419 is comprised of a 50/50 contribution between the Australian Government and NSW Government.

The Australian Government has committed $191 million to build on the NSW Government’s $500 million Fixing Local Roads program, ensuring even more regional communities benefit, faster.

Federal Member for Calare and Minister for Decentralisation and Regional Education, Andrew Gee said the funding injection would have far-reaching benefits for motorists’ safety and local employment.

Following the "Opening" in March of the Fairbridge Children's Park the gate to the Mitchell Highway facility has finally been unlocked.

On the Monday immediately following the Old Fairbridgians opening celebration the Covid-19 lockdown suddenly came into effect and the formal transfer of the roadside park as an asset to Cabonne Council and its designation as a rest stop did not occur until last Tuesday when Cabonne Council formally accepted the transfer of assets from the Old Fairbridgians Association.

The park was opened to the public last Thursday. Deputy Premier Barilaro also visited the park last Thursday week with members of the Association and indicated that the State Government would provide $100,000 to complete the park with a war memorial for Fairbridge veterans.

Banjo to be bronzed

The Banjo Paterson Museum has received a $7,500 grant under Round 5 of the Australian Government’s Stronger Communities Program for the manufacturing of a bronze sculpture of the iconic Australian poet – Andrew Barton ‘Banjo’ Paterson.

The sculpture will be erected in Yeoval Banjo’s childhood home, at the front of the Banjo Paterson Museum to face the main street, serving as a real drawcard for tourism in the area.

Federal Member for Calare and Minister for Decentralisation and Regional Education, Andrew Gee was delighted with the progress that has been made on the construction of the statue when he visited the museum on Friday.

“The Banjo Paterson Museum is a key regional tourism destination and this sculpture is going to provide locals and visitors with another very special attraction,” said Mr Gee. “Banjo was an iconic, Aussie legend – a household name, his poems being taught to our children in schools from an early age.

Following a $60,000 grant from the Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal, growMOLONG held several public meetings and conducted street surveys to gather ideas for painting the drab, but prominent, old railway water tank at Molong's entrance from Orange.

Concept art is contained in growMOLONG's Development Proposal (notified in last weeks Molong Express). Submissions on the proposal are open until Friday 11 September. growMOLONG's proposal states: "The Water Tank is located on the Mitchell Highway as you enter Molong from the East, a great location for an iconic piece of Public Art. of Many Rocks will not be on the tank as it is on the signage to Molong.

The design wraps around the Tank and is easily visible from the Highway.

It starts with colourful examples of a local wattle and Rosella, a common bird in the area, and a Magpie which is the symbol for many Molong sporting teams.

Then we move to the cultural aspects of "The Molong Story".

Major Sir Thomas Mitchell traversed this area and mapped out roads and towns for the new settlers.

During his 4th expedition which eventually took him to Charleville he was guided by Yuranigh a local Wiradjuri man.

When he died Yuranigh was buried according to the local Aboriginal traditions with carved trees around his grave which indicated he was a significant person in his tribe.

Mitchell was impressed with Yuranigh and asked the Governor to organize a suitable grave and headstone for him.

This site is located about 4km east of Molong and is signposted for visitors.

In the image Mitchell would not be wearing a cattleman's coat instead his uniform jacket. These images will be painted with the artistic interpretation of this brief.

Finally we go back to another common bird found in the local area, a Blue Wren, and the Wattle."

The concept art is already garnering wide support locally and on social media.

Local professional artists have been engaged and approvals from relevant authorities (Railway etc) obtained.

Painting of the silos and/or the water tank have been long proposed.

This project will certainly provide a bright welcome to the town.

Great turnout and ideas at town centre consultations

Across four big days last week, Molong and Canowindra residents were given the opportunity to speak with urban design experts Sala4D and King+Campbell to have their say about what they would like to see in their town centres.

The consultations were designed to continue the conversation on from initial meetings where the history, strengths and weaknesses of the two town centres were pulled together to form issues papers on both towns. There was a combination of day time drop in sessions, as well as evening sessions held in Molong and Canowindra, with an excellent local turnout for all events.

Urban design is about creating functional and long-lasting spaces that residents of Cabonne and visitors to the region will want to spend time in.

“It is great to see so many interested groups getting to have their say at events like these,” Mayor Kevin Beatty said, having attended the evening sessions in both Molong and Canowindra.

“Residents of Molong and Canowindra should be proud of their attendance and ideas.”

As with the previous issues paper, the information provided to the consultants will be collated and be available for public exhibition and comment in the coming months.

The Molong School of Arts and the former Supper Room The township of Molong is one of the oldest in the Western Districts, a stockade being in existence in 1822.

Attention was first focussed on the district by the discovery of copper when mining operations were in evidence in 1845. The settlement was fostered by the grazing opportunities. A government stockyard was established at Molong in 1845, and a military guard installed.

Land was reserved for a village and the town was laid out in 1848.

Development was slow and the town was incorporated as a municipal district in 1878. Between 1875 to 1879 land was 'rushed' in the district, when 500 selections were taken up. The rail reached Molong in 1891.

The School of Arts Building (site and foundations only) was officially opened

by Sir Henry Parkes on July 1878. The foundation stone and a time capsule were laid in the following year in April 1879 by Mr. Alderman Hughes. The building was opened in 1879.

Plans for a School of Arts at Molong really began in earnest when the member for Molong, Mr. Smith, promised in December 1876 to ‘endeavour to have £300 placed upon the Estimates’ for 1877 as a Government subsidy towards the erection of the Molong School of Arts.

The following year the School of Arts committee had already raised some money. Many of the leading citizens having given £10 each. The Committee then purchased suitable land in Bank Street, Lot 6 and part of Lot 5, from Mr. Robert Shield at the favourable price of £62. It is possible that Robert Shield had built his first house on this same land in c. 1852.

Beside the land was a rough private laneway, also owned by Shield that led other property of his at the rear. This land was much later taken up by the Molong Council (Now Cabonne Council) when it was then widened, drained, and straightened by them.

Robert Shield was, at about the time of the land sale, a local Council Alderman and for a while, the mayor. He had married Rebecca, who was born at Grantham (England) in 1818 and together they had migrated to Australia, living first in Sydney for a year, but arriving in Molong c. 1851/2. Rebecca was a grandniece of Captain Cook, the famous navigator, and the discoverer of Eastern Australia. (Rebecca was buried at Forbes cemetery in 1902) The 1877 the School of Arts committee had accumulated the nucleus of a library and soon after called tenders for preliminary site work and foundations. In July 1878 Sir Henry Parkes came through Molong. It was said that he then ‘Opened the School of Arts’ but at that stage only the foundations could have been completed. The foundation stone for the building was laid in the following year in April 1879 by Mr. Alderman Hughes. (The mayor was away

at the time). A time capsule containing the Molong newspaper and other documents was duly placed at the south-west corner of the building. The next month the work was under construction by the local contractors Messrs. Gadd & Neville, and James from Orange. They had two other projects at that time in Molong being the Telegraph Offices for £1680, and the Public School at £3300.

They worked fast and by October the School of Arts was opened; the first major function was probably the grand concert held there on the 11 October 1879 to raise funds to alleviate the building debt. More than 300 people attended and £23 was raised.

In July 1888 Robert Shield left Molong for Sydney in order to get treatment for facial cancer but indicating that he may stay away. He had been a well-respected alderman and townsman for Molong. Mr. Robert Shields died in 1890.

One of his sons Thomas Shield followed in his father footsteps also as a local Councillor of many years. By July 1891 the committee for the Hall made a decision to supplement the facilities with a Supper Room, plus facilities for a Ladies Reading Room and community and council meeting rooms. This was ‘referred to a sub-committee for investigation and report’. In July Mr. E. Finch provided specifications for a corrugated iron room to be built, of the same length as the hall, with an entrance to it. However, after discussions the construction material was changed to brick and the specifications revised. Functions were held and funds raised towards the proposed construction.

By May 1893, the Supper Room was up and functioning. A small improvement was then added to create a small space that could be heated for book readers. It was then that the facilities, School of Arts Hall plus Supper Room, really came to the forefront of

the social and educational life in Molong Possibly one of the earliest major social functions was the Molong Social Club Ball. As was the custom at all social gatherings in Molong since then, the Hall and Supper Room were decorated to look very handsome, ‘as well as tempting’ having been decked out by a ‘bevy of ladies’. By 1905 a report (Australian Town and Country) said there were 10 rooms and a hall in the building which included a billiard table and a reading room.2 Through the years many socials followed including Hospital Balls, Juvenile Balls and Engineers Balls.

There was a myriad of occasions to celebrate in the School of Arts Hall and Supper Room. The facilities also served for various sports such as skating, music, exhibitions and memorials and other celebration and as after about 1930, as a movie theatre. During these years, the School of Arts and Supper Room must have been at the very centre of social life in Molong.

Around 1909 the Molong Council took over Shields Lane from the Trustees of Robert Shield. The lane had been a problem for some time with drainage discharging onto Bank Street and causing damage. The Council added additional land owned by Mr Parslow from Lot 4 to the east so that it could be properly aligned and drained. Today it frames the Town Hall building opposite.

In January 1960 drawings for the alterations and additions to the façade of the Supper Room were completed by architects Louis & Roberson & Son. These plans changed the buildings appearance significantly, obscuring the gable end that had tied it visually to the Hall. At the same time the façade of the Hall was rendered and simplified and the sign on the hall gable ‘School of Arts’ was removed or covered over. (Next Page: Who used the Hall)

Iconic "Bakery" to close

With his endearing humour, Perry Trethowan announced, officially, on Tuesday he and Bronnie's long awaited retirement from the popular Bank Street newsagency their family have owned and operated for 36 and a half years. "Yesterday I was 'tired' - today I've added two letters to the front of the word to announce that Bronnie and I have 'retired' said Perry.

Molong has been waiting for news in the hope that this important Jodi Murray, Bron and Perry Trethowan and Kaylene Philpott at the newsagency on Tuesday town business will continue with new operators coming forward - and to give Bron and Perry the opportunity to take a long awaited rest.

Positive town supporters, Kaylene and Matt Philpott - licencees of the Molong Post Office, came forward making a decision to combine their post office business with the newsagency. From 28 September the two businesses will be combined into one in the existing newsagency building. This is a positive outcome for the Trethowans, Philpotts and Molong in keeping the newsagency business open - and in co-locating two important businesses/services in town.

From Monday 14 September the newsagency opening hours will be The Molong Show Committee couldn't let a Mon - Fri 7.30am to 5.30pm, Sat. 7.30am to 12noon, Sun. Closed. year go by without our beloved Show.

Sadly, Paula and Brenden will be closing the front doors of the Molong Bakery tomorrow. This will be a sad day for the whole community.

Particularly when Molong is on a growth curve with a very positive future.

For the Roberts family - this community would have liked to have seen a new long-term lease provided by the building owners as a rural style goodwill gesture which this community stands for.

On behalf of the Molong and District community the Express would like to thank Paula, Brenden and the Roberts family and their dedicated staff for helping to build this town, and in attracting tourists and travellers to town.

We wish them well - and hope they have many long and welldeserved 'sleep-ins'.

Cody Ramsey of Molong has joined the story of the Medieval legend his club is named after.

Last Saturday he joined the other dragon-slayers at the fabulous WIN Wollongong Stadium after his surprise selection for the NRL game between the Dragons and the Canberra Raiders. Whilst the green machine won the match ... Cody Ramsey's first official game in the big league was sensational - fast, super fit, smart, strategic, athletic, the young man from Molong and Manildra Rhinos was able to cross the line twice for his team.

Without a new long-term lease on offer - Paula and Brenden Roberts, their family and loyal staff have no other option but to walk away from the Molong Bakery business they have built over the past five and a half years in the historical main street building.

With the building on the market - it is unknown what the popular cafe/bakery space will become in the future. From tomorrow (Friday) the doors will close - and Molong will have another vacant building.

However, for the Roberts family - given their 5+ years of opening in the dark of the morning to prepare breakfasts, take-aways, packed lunches for tradies, travellers, local business owners and community members - continuing to operate the business without an extended long-term lease does not make good business sense.

"Take it easy ..." (We will!)

We've heard Perry Trethowan say it - well, for years - "take it easy".

The time has finally come for the Trethowans to do just that.

The most important 'meeting place' in Molong has been the local newsagency - lovingly referred to as Perry and Bron's - and since health and retirement started tapping louder on the Trethowan's front door locals added 'Jodi' who, admirably, hopped into the shop to help her parents.

Now it is time for 'take it easy' and for Perry and Bron- more time in their recliners - feet up - a sip or two - and a well earned rest from the long hours they have spent operating the local 'paper shop'. Then again, this business has provided more than newsagency lines, daily papers and a place to grab a ticket in the weekly jackpots.

Trethowan's Molong Newsagency has become 'home' and 'family' to local and district residents. For many a resident living alone - Perry's morning welcome was the first conversation of the new day - happy, jovial, always ready for a laugh or two, a joke that relieved his early morning customers, his mates and friends from the long night of loneliness and wakefulness. Both Perry and Bron have been good friends to the town. They cared, respected, welcomed and took 37 years of interest as important members of the 'town and district family'.

Bron, Perry and Jodi shared tears with many of 'their extended family' members. They shared the good times, the sad times, births, deaths and marriages ... providing warm smiles, love and care ... freely given without prejudice or judgment.

Fascinating History

Some of the many Organisations that used the hall

Apart from the major function of community celebrations, recitals and the library, the facilities of the School of Arts Hall plus Supper Room, were used for by many organisations and commercial interests.

These tenants probably provided an income for the upkeep of the hall. These uses included: Molong Argus Newspaper, Salvation Army; Molong CWA; Molong Pastures Protection Board; Molong RSL and the Royal Ancient Order of Buffalos.

Molong Argus Newspaper: Although there was some early attempt to start an Argus Newspaper in 1876 it seems the Molong Argus did not commence until 1895. The National Advocate in Bathurst reported ‘We have received from Mr. James Anderson, publisher, the first copy of the Molong Argus. The best and worst thing we can say of the paper is, that if the district in which it circulates is as good as the paper, it is very good indeed.’

Salvation Army The presence of the Salvation Army in Molong and their relationship to the School of Arts is recorded in many newspaper articles. November 1888: ‘The Salvation Army is commencing work in this town.

They contemplate renting the new store lately erected

by Mr. Shields next the School of Arts, and it is most probable that before many weeks we shall witness the opening.’

November 1908 a unique ceremony was performed viz., the celebration of a double wedding under the auspices of Salvation Army. For weeks past the members of the local corps—more especially the female portion —have been busy preparing for the great event, and numbers of townspeople waited impatiently to see how a "Hallelujah Wedding" was conducted. As it was anticipated that the local barracks would not hold the number who desired to be present, so the School of Arts Hall was engaged for the occasion.

In September 1916 The Salvationists of Molong held their annual self-denial effort on Saturday and Monday last, in the shape of a Naval Fair in the School of Arts. 5 August 1917 the Salvation Army conducted a spring fair at the School of Arts.

November 1953 The Salvation Army had a visit from

Molong township was hit by a tunnel of wind last Friday afternoon when the clouds gathered, rain fell with hail following. Then a fierce tunnel of wind surprised residents in Phillip Street, Edward Street, Gidley Street and Betts Street.

One residence lost its tin room with others reporting the loss of roof tiles, a carport, the loss of tree limbs, with one giant conifer uprooted from the ground in Phillip Street.

SES and other volunteer organisations helped to place tarpaulin over homes and building soon after the storm to protect the residents.

When in doubt - get some fresh ideas from outside.

Following consultation sessions and drop-in sessions held in August, Urban Design experts Sala4D and King+Campbell returned to Molong to display their findings and suggestions for a revitalised town centre.

In August, the Molong and Canowindra communities were invited to explore and shape ideas regarding ways to create more attractive and stylish town centres.

The key messages to come out of these consultations for Molong were that the community impression of the town centre is tired and in need of modernisation. The Molong community would like to see their town centre as sophisticated and stylish.

The papers outlining the suggested changes to achieve these visions are on public exhibition on Cabonne Councils website and at their offices.

As we leave winter behind and head into the warmer months, it’s time to start thinking about the pool season in Cabonne. She's a wonderful combination of warmth and kindness and laughter and love It's been almost two whole years since we last saw you. I can tell you that the pain isn't any less and the hole in my heart isn't any smaller. Not a day goes by that I don't think of you. lt's funny how when you grieve it doesn't come all at once. lt comes in waves, like while you're driving, or you're shopping or you're staying in bed at night, right when you least expect it, it creeps up. There are no quick fixes and no easy answers.

Something I feel that I learned from you is that no matter how hard something is, you just have to keep pushing through.

I read something once that said "no one ever told me that grief felt so much like fear".

I've never thought of it in that way before, but it makes such sense. It leaves those same butterflies in your tummy, the same restlessness, the tiredness. Sometimes it even feels like a blur. I dread the moments where the house is quiet and I dread the moments where I'm alone, because that's when it feels like fear.

Feel no guilt in laughter, she knows how much you care. Feel no sorrow in a smile that she's not here to share.

You cannot grieve forever, she would not want you to. She'd hoped you can carry on, the way you always do.

So talk about the good times and the way you showed you cared. The days you spent together, all the happiness you shared.

Let memories surround you. A word some one may say. Will suddenly recapture a time, an hour, a day.

That brings her back as clearly as though she was here. And fills you with the feelings that she is always near.

For if you keep these moments, you will never be apart. And she will live forever, locked safe within your heart.

It’s been a long day without you my friend, but I'll tell you all about it when I see you again...

Bring your picnic blankets and set up on the lawn at the Molong Baptist Church for a sausage sizzle (gold coin donation), a service telling the awesome Christmas Story and Christmas Carols.

We will be providing post game eats (Gravy beef roll with chips or Savoury mince pie with chips). $10 per head + $3 including the meal.

This was a hit last year so come along. All welcome.

Annabelles Kitchen Annabelle is back cooking at the club on Saturday evenings from 6 pm.

Molong Golf Sunday Mixed Golf: On Sunday we had over 20 players to enjoy a game of 3 person Ambrose. It was a great day with enjoyable weather. We were playing for hams and turkeys and drew for partners.

Winners were Troy, John and John. We had a “putt off” and enjoyed a great BBQ after.
