Pony Club to feature Tom Curtain’s show

Golden Guitar winner Tom Curtain is on the road with his award winning Katherine Outback Experience team of working dogs and horses and his music from the release of his new album titled “We’re Still Here”.

Tom will be performing in Molong on Friday 31 January at the Campdraft grounds from 6 pm.

The Molong Pony Club is providing a bar and catering at the event as their major fundraiser.

The show is a combination of horsemanship, horse liberty, hilarious working dog demonstration and live country music.

Presented by the Rural Adversity Mental Health Program where you will learn how to recognize signs that a person may be struggling with their mental health, how to talk to them and provide help and support.

This is part of a new initiative called Molong Cares, supported by

the Molong Advancement Group.

The aim is to create a space to share information, start conversations, make connections and support the community in learning to recognise and help family and friends who are struggling with their mental health.

Lucy Watt graduates

Dr Lucy Watt was awarded her PhD at a graduation ceremony at Charles Sturt University in Wagga Wagga on Monday 16 December.

Lucy, Cumnock born and raised is the daughter of Rhonda and Andrew Watt of Cumnock and graduated from Molong Central School in 2010.

Her doctoral research informs sheep producers about the use of drought tolerant pastures for grazing and forage production and has shown the potential for hardseeded annual legumes to fill the feed gap for southern NSW sheep producers.

Her research through the Graham Centre for Agricultural Innovation has focused on biserrula, bladder clover, arrowleaf clover and French serradella.

A blonde woman was speeding down the road in her little red sports car and was pulled over by a woman police officer, who was also a blonde.

The blonde cop asked to see the blonde driver’s license. She dug through her purse and was getting progressively more agitated.

‘What does it look like?’ she finally asked.

The policewoman replied, Its square and it has your picture on It.’ The driver finally found a square mirror in her purse, looked at it and handed it to the policewoman. ‘Here it is,’ she said.

The blonde officer looked at the mirror, then handed it back saying, ‘’OK, you can go. I didn’t realize you were a cop...”

Letters Keeping image up to date Ongoing discussion over what needs or doesn’t need to be done to bolster Molong in both business and image has been nothing if not interesting.

However, if the recent experience of visiting relatives, one middle-aged, the other elderly, is anything to go by, there are one or two things around town that might warrant fairly prompt attention, one being inaccurate signage on businesses and FaceBook pages hopelessly out of date.

Having looked on-line for accommodation, they chose a local motel as it seemed to offer a restaurant. Arriving after a long flight from WA and same-day drive from Sydney, signs on the building backed up the on-line claims.

Enquiring, they were told that meals were available at the hotels and were given directions how to get there. One was closed.

Walking back along Bank Street, they noticed the prominent “Cafe and Gallery” sign in Gidley Street, only to find that this business was no longer operating.

I’m aware that these are not faults unique to Molong, but if the town is looking to go forward, even a simple thing like updating online information is a good start. There is nothing more annoying than arriving somewhere only to find things are “not as advertised” and, on checking your search, finding statements such as “page last updated January 2001”.

Competition is at the heart of good retail, but in small towns our competitors are also our neighbours and we may just need their help one day.

Oh yes, and my sisters also said they would like to have been spared the lecture on “How wonderful is our Prime Minister.”

Nor does the Driver Reviver facility reflect well on the town at times. I have been told that its location is dictated by Roads and Maritime and have no reason to doubt this, but who is responsible for altering the indicator panel that lets travellers know if the van is open or closed?

It must be a source of frustration for more than a few travellers who, anticipating a leg stretch and and a cuppa, pull up at what is a none too attractive site, only to find no-one has bothered to put up the “CLOSED” sign.

Regional tourism set to boom thanks to new heritage programs New heritage tourism trails and a study of rural sheds across the Orange, Blayney and Cabonne Shires will come to life thanks to a joint partnership between the three Councils and an $80,000 funding boost from Create NSW. A ‘bushranger’ tourist trail that runs right through each shire will lead visitors to historic sites such as the old Canowindra bank that was held up for 3 days or to the location near Eugowra where the Escort Rock robbery took place.

The second proposed trail is an Aboriginal heritage trail which will take tourists to places such as Mount Canobolas and Yuranigh’s Grave near Molong. Aboriginal elders, their families and communities will work with Orange 360 and Orange City Council to design the trail. The trail could be self-guided or could one day be used by tourist operators as guided tours.

Ten community museums across the Orange, Blayney and Cabonne Shires will assist with gathering information and images.

The final project will see community members and local museums work together to document and interpret construction methods. The aim is to record historic farm and community buildings, document their history and stories.

Local Hidden Treasures recognised

Member for Orange, Phil Donato, presented this years local Hidden Treasures, at a function in Forbes last Friday.

An initiative of the Department of Primary Industries Rural Women’s Network, the awards honour contributions rural women have made through volunteering.

“It was an honour and a privilege to recognise the 2019 Hidden Treasures of the Orange electorate whose names will be inscribed on the honour roll, along with 71 other ladies recognised from across NSW” Phil said.

“These ladies are the backbone of our communities and have volunteered themselves and their time to benefit others without seeking credit nor wanting any accolade.”

The seven Orange electorate nominees included Betty Newstead of Molong, and Rhonda Watt of Cumnock.

Orange City Mayor Cr Reg Kidd said it is great to see these projects start to come to life.

“These projects will be a major boost for tourism once they are up and running, bringing with them a number of economic benefits,” Cr Reg Kidd said.

“When it comes to the sheds, it’s important to discover how long they have been there and how old they are. There’s potential too to stage a photographic exhibition of the sheds once these records are finalised.”

Orange City Council’s Employment and Economic Development Committee chair Cr Tony Mileto believes the trails will give people another reason to come and visit the area.

“Studies have shown that tourists want to dig deeper into a town’s heritage and culture.” Cr Tony Mileto said. “When they’re staying at any of these towns in Orange, Blayney or Cabonne shires, they will be able to explore these heritage trails that will be easily accessible and free of charge.”

The grant program will run for two years. Research and development will happen over the next two or three months, as consultants work with local community groups and Betty Newstead was born on the 7th May museums. All projects are set to be 1936 at Menindee and grew up in a large family finalised by the end of 2021. home on the river bank with 7 siblings. She has strong family ties and always helps others.

• Become a member of St John Ambulance, Broken Hill a 1.5 hour drive one way to attend training meetings and teach First Aid at schools.

• Enter First Aid Competitions at the mines, being very successful.

• Attend Sporting and community events where she provided First Aid Services eg football, • Join Molong Cadet Division 1998 and become an Officer • Volunteer 40 years of service, Awarded the Service Medal • Be awarded the Member of “The Order of St John” medal presented by the Governor of NSW in 2011 • Be an active member of the Molong SES for 15 years, awarded the National Medal.

I commend Betty for the Hidden Treasures Honour roll for 2019, as she has given extended volunteer service in many local communities and has been an exemplary role model for rural women and youth. Her exuberant personality lights up any place and makes people feel welcomed and cared for in any environment.

Rhonda Watt married a local farmer 34 years ago and ever since has been involved with the Cumnock community.

She works tirelessly with her husband in a grazing operation and an off- farm enterprise but she is forever helping in town. She actively supported her children’s local school eventually becoming P&C president for several years.

She has coordinated the Show Society luncheon for 20 years (a meal recognised far and wide not to be missed!). Her cheerful nature, organising skills and preparedness to work encourages the community to get involved.

She was a key member of the village beautification committee and instigator of the Painting of the Power Poles in the main street. She became secretary of the Progress Association 10 years ago and has since spearheaded numerous projects including Australia Day celebrations, Daroo Award dinners, Molong Players’ suppers, Zoo 2 Zoo breakfasts and upgrading the showground facilities.

Rhonda is deeply involved with a massive refurbishment of the recreation area in the town centre spending many hours working with contractors. She has developed a close working relationship with our local council; her ability to access and write grant applications to benefit the community is outstanding.

Her last application has been adopted by council as a template for other communities.

She’s an active member of the Fire Brigade and recently printed and distributed names and contact details of all residents in case of an emergency.

She has also found time to help coordinate fodder drops and distribute vouchers to needy farmers suffering from the drought. Rhonda is a wonderful, passionate volunteer who cares deeply for our village’s sustainability.

The View from the Hill

Morrison should control that temper in Liberal climate debate Scott Morrison’s Monday salvo against the NSW environment minister, Matt Kean, one of the Liberal progressives on climate change, was gratuitous and inept.

Quizzed about Kean’s claim that there’s pressure from senior Liberals for strong climate policies, Morrison let fly on the ABC. “Matt Kean doesn’t know what he’s talking about. He doesn’t know what’s going on in the federal cabinet. Most of the federal cabinet wouldn’t even know who Matt Kean was.”

The put down came across as arrogant and rude. As for saying “most” of the federal cabinet wouldn’t know who Kean was … really? Given the centrality of energy and environmental issues, and the fact Kean has hardly been low profile, such alleged ignorance is not something to use as a political weapon.

On Nine Morrison said: “I think Matt should focus on hazard reduction and I’ll focus on emissions reduction”.

The attack on Kean – who had cast his remarks on Sky quite respectfully - can do little for relations with a sister Coalition government charged with the major heavy lifting in the state’s fire crisis. (It also fuelled tensions within that government - deputy premier John Barilaro is a critic of Kean.)

It was a flash of the Morrison temper - another example of the Prime Minister having trouble striking the right tone in responding to these devastating events.

In his Monday round of interviews to spruik the government’s announcement of a package for fire-hit small businesses, Morrison seemed to dig in against any change on emissions policy, putting the emphasis on adaptation and response.

Some Liberal sources believe (or hope) this isn’t so much indicating Morrison will do nothing, as showing he wants anything he does to be on his own terms – a reflection of his personality, as well as the debilitating sensitivity of the climate issue within the Liberal party.

No one thinks there’s any chance of the government toughening its emissions reduction target. But it is likely there will be measures over time to try to speed the achievement of the target. (Electric cars will no longer be a threat to the Australian weekend!)

Whether additional measures collectively will be significant or just at the margin is another matter.

Anything extra done on climate policy (as distinct from changes to bushfire response arrangements, such as for mobilising the army) will be, as far as Morrison is concerned, driven substantially by politics.

The prime minister is not galvanised by the importance of the climate issue itself.

For example when pressed on Monday about whether zero net emissions would be achievable by 2050 – widely recognised as imperative in the battle to contain global warming – Morrison’s emphasis was on the downside.

“We undertook to look at that through the Pacific Islands Forum,” he told 3AW: “But what does that mean for jobs? I can’t answer that question right now about what that would mean for jobs. But I’m concerned that it wouldn’t be a good thing and so I think people who make these commitments need to be able to tell people what that will cost them.”

Morrison is focusing on unattainable precision. We are talking about three decades on. Decarbonising will create new jobs as well as costing some old ones. Anyway, the jobs outlook so far ahead will be affected by many factors, including some not on the radar now.

Meanwhile, the government is under increasing pressure on its earlier near-religious commitment to a surplus this financial year – a commitment it is being forced to retreat from or hedge.

In the pre-Christmas budget update the projected surplus was revised from about $7 billion to $5 billion. Where the budget bottom line will now land is anybody’s guess.

At the PM’s joint news conference on Monday, treasurer Josh Frydenberg acknowledged the cost to the budget this financial year of the fire relief can be expected to be above the $500 million figure the government has been using.

He refused to be pinned down on the status of the projected surplus.

Asked “do you think it’s likely you will deliver a surplus or you won’t?”, Frydenberg said: “Look, I’m not in a position to give a firm answer to that question because the full economic impact is still uncertain”.

On the other side of politics, Anthony Albanese finds himself in an awkward spot by again declining to be specific about Labor’s future climate policy in his Sunday remarks on the subject.

While this has left him open to criticism when the climate debate is intensifying, it is a sensible strategy for the long game.

To spell out detail now would turn the focus sharply onto Labor, when Albanese wants maximum attention on the government.

Elements in this debate can change over the next year and beyond. Although some will believe Labor should be more decisive, it make political sense for Albanese to retain flexibility until closer to the election. (from theconversation.com.au)

Baked entries - can either be campoven cooked or oven cooked prior to the judging must be in at the Rec. by 9 a.m. on Australia Day for judging.

BUSH DAMPER (Feeds 15 people or 3 hungry campers).

4 cups (500g) self-raising flour 1 teaspoon salt 20g butter, softened 1 cup (250ml) milk 1/2 cup (125ml) water Preheat oven to 220 degrees C. Grease a baking tray.

In a large bowl, stir together the flour and the salt. With your hands, rub in butter.

Make a well in the centre of the flour mixture and pour in the milk and water. Stir until the dough comes together. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and form into a round loaf 20cm across. Place the loaf onto the prepared tray and, using a sharp knife, cut a cross in the top.

Bake for 25 minutes in the preheated oven, then lower the temperature to 180 degrees C and continue to bake for an additional 5 to 10 minutes. The loaf should be golden brown and the bottom should sound hollow when tapped.

LANDMARK TABLELANDS LIVESTOCK CTLX Sheep & Lamb report 15 January

It was a pretty good quality yarding with a good selection of trade lambs along with some outstanding heavy weights. There was also good numbers of ideal store lambs along with good numbers of very light lambs all being sold prematurely due to the drought.

Light weight lambs to the processors were firm to $3 dearer with the 12kg to 18kg 2 scores selling from $80 to $140/ head. Trade lambs were firm to $4 dearer with the new season lambs selling from $138 to $180/head. Trade weight old lambs sold from $138 to $193/head to average between 750c and 785c/kg cwt. Heavy weight lambs were $4 to $6 cheaper with the over 24kg old lambs selling from $183 to $228 while heavy new season lambs sold to $215/head.

Trade weight Merino lambs sold from $128 to $166/head. Restocker lambs were $6 to $8 dearer with the better lambs

selling from $125 to $165 while lambs to the feeders sold from $115 to $166/head.

Very young lambs to the restockers sold from $40 to $95/head. Hoggets sold to $170/head.

There were some outstanding sheep yarded along with the expected plainer types in a mixed yarding of mutton where most grades were firm to $3/head dearer.

Merino ewes sold from $36 to $185 while crossbred ewes sold from $52 to $212 and Dorpers sold to $164/head. Merino wethers sold to $164/head. Carcass prices for the prime sheep ranged from 585c to 645c/kg cwt. The restockers were active on some lines of outstanding quality four and a half year old Merino ewes off shears which sold from $150 to $178/head.

Angus units. There were a few pens of PTIC heifers along with four pens of cows.

There was a good crowd on hand with solid support coming from southern NSW and Victorian buyers along with some buyers down from the New England.

There was also solid support from local districts. With falls of up to 90mm of rain, the market was solid in all sections.

The steer and heifer market were $100/ head dearer and more in places. The steers sold from $190 for young bobby calves to $1,080/head for top quality Angus steers. The steer weaners sold up to 438c with the 400c/kg barrier broken on many occasions. The heifers sold from $240 for plain crossbreds to $990/head for top Angus heifers. The 400c/kg barrier was broken on one occasion while the bulk of the better heifer calves sold from 250c to 300c/kg with odd sales higher.

Four pens of PTIC heifers sold from $800 for Red Angus heifers to $1,020/head for Black Angus heifers.

Cows and calves were $200/unit dearer. The best of the cows and calves were a line of top-quality. Angus cows with their 2nd to 4th calf at foot. They sold for $1,510 while the balance of the cows and calves sold from $700 for plain crossbreds to $1,450/unit for 3rd calf Angus units. Two pens of PTIC cows sold for $980 and $1,370 while two pens of dry cows sold for $855 and $890/head.

Jack wasn't there last week - but I believe that the half dozen golfers who were there had a good day and enjoyed themselves.

Don't know whether they had a BBQ after.

Apparently Drew and Jed played well - Jed must need the exercise - from what I heard he was the only one walking. Next Sunday: Fancy an early morning hit of golf on Australia DayT-Off 8.00 to 8.30 a.m. ... there will be 'antique' prizes for NTP for women and men and longest drive as well.

Sausage and Steak sizzle after and refreshments as always.

Disc Golfers will be celebrating Australia Day as well. I do not have the 'tools' (technically disadvantaged) to text Kevin Costa or Kerry Oates but interested disc golfers can.

Sunday Morning Social Golf is...well ... very social when the team from Molong's legendary Telegraph Hotel hit the course for what is a regular Sunday exercise and skills building routine. (Other players/teams hit the course as well - and new teams - new players are always welcome).

The Express has heard many an 'after game' story (maybe a 'slight' stretching of the truth?) when this team (See P.4 and P.11) return to the Telegraph Hotel. Whilst many good balls are driven down the fairways and tapped into the elusive (could that be 'moving' hole) of the sand-greens ... it could be said that often (well, occasionally!) a cheer goes up for NTP achievement. As we say in journalism - never let the truth stand in the way of a good story!

We decided to check it out ... so...

Last Sunday the Express with little R2 (truth sniffing dog) in tow headed out to the Mighty Molong Golf Course to check out these 'amazing stories'.

We instructed R2 (the Express super powered 'truth' finder) to bring back his opinion.

Unfortunately, we failed to foresee that 'buggies' were being used ... with of course, 'wheels'.

Failing to do his 'paid' job - R2's attention to detail and fact finding was diverted to peeing on the wheels instead.

Nevertheless, the Express continued ... but we also failed to complete our fact finding Sunday mission because we were kept laughing with what these 'local comedians' said ... and what we saw. Big Wins In Oilsplus Cricket The resumption of the Oilsplus Senior Cricket after the Christmas New Year break has some teams licking their wounds whilst others firmed as competition heavyweights.

At the REC Magpies hosted Millthorpe and went into the match confident after easily accounting for Millthorpe when the teams met in round one. However the tables were turned when the visitors recorded a 79 run win in a very low scoring game. A dampish wicket and a rare toss win saw Magpies captain Jake Evans send the visitors in.

The going was tough for Millthorpe as the pitch was indeed difficult to bat on and they struggled to score runs. Tim Low (44) batted with great patience top scoring for the visitors. Other batsmen came and went as wickets fell at a consistent rate and Millthorpe looked like they would struggle to reach triple figures however a late cameo by Darren Yates (15) got them there. However Millthorpe were all out in the 37th over for just 114. Jake Evans and Ben Brown both took 3 wickets each for Magpies.

In reply Magpies were embarrassing, a

shambles and self imploded. There's no other way to describe it really as they were all out for 35! If you were into bird watching and looking for waterfowl on Saturday you didn't have to go to the Molong Creek you just had to take a seat at the REC and you would see five yes five of their batsmen recording ducks and two scoring just 1. Pat Tree 4 for 16 and Adam Clarke 4 for 11 destroyed the Magpies feeble attempt at batting. One to forget for Magpies who now have two losses on the trot and a slide down the ladder whilst the win consolidated second place for Millthorpe.

Country travelled to Canowindra in what was expected to be a tight game as 1st played third. However it ended up a cakewalk for the reigning premiers.

Batting first Country recorded a big total with the regular culprit Trent Frazer (96) top scoring as they recorded 6 for 215 after 40 overs. Mark Frazer (27) John Mulhall (21) and Dan Toynton (19) also getting amongst the runs. With captain Nigel Brazier away holidaying at the exclusive Burrendong Dam Heights caravan park Joe Clayton was allowed

to bat and scored a useful 18 not out.

The consistent Jamie Austin with 3 for 56 and D Schaefer with 2 for 43 were Canowindra's best bowlers. In reply the home team offered very little surrendering meekly to be all out for 78 in the 22nd over. Jamie Austin (20), B Schaefer (22) & S Austin (20) the only batsmen to make an impression. Jock Haynes bowled superbly taking 4 for 7 from his 4 overs and John Mullhall capped of a fine game with 2 for 0.

In the final game at Cudal the home team recorded a comfortable 4 wicket win against Molong All Stars. At the time of writing scoresheets have not been provided.

There will be a general bye this weekend for the Australia Day long weekend with the competition resuming on 1 February.
