There's a new 'girl' in town!

Meet 'Sally' the Scarecrow created by Harriet, Annabelle and Franklin and their mum, Megan.

Standing proudly in a paddock somewhere along the Euchareena Road, 'Sally' is the first entry in the 2020 Molong Show Society's Scarecrow Competition. "We love Sally" said an excited Annabelle - who helped mum Megan make the beautiful hair. "Our scarecrow is the first entry in the Molong Show's Scarecrow competition" reported Annabelle.

Harriett was wondering how 'Sally' would be able to walk. "I think my dad's gumboots are a bit big ... and, her legs are made of straw ... how can Sally walk?".

"No need to worry Harriett" said 'Sally' "when the cows are sleeping and the sun has gone to bed ... scarecrows jump up and dance - it's magic."

Franklin was happy to help his family make 'Sally' - but more interested in helping Dad on the farm "I love trucks" he said.

Why are NSW towns looking the same?

This is a question I asked myself - yet again, whilst visiting Katoomba in the Blue Mountains last weekend. I ask the same question when visiting other towns in NSW ... and when I walk along Bank Street. Why are the buildings in NSW town centres looking the same?

The answer has a lot to do with the so called ‘heritage colours’ that NSW local government planners/DA approvers/heritage advisors/ are apparently forcing onto today’s building owners who own heritage buildings.

Same heritage colours used in towns built in different eras, history, social history, cultural history??? What happened to individuality, uniqueness - the colours associated with town stories, heritage, the reason for being there?

Take for example Katoomba. Once a beautiful town that early photographs and stories refer to as a mountain town where city and country residents would head to in order to escape the stifling heat and

humidity of Sydney summers. And, the high summer temperatures and the intense heat of regional farming areas?

The same early photos representing colour, fun, horses and buggies, early motorised vehicles filled to the brim with cane picnic baskets, children in their best clothing, women in pretty white dresses and decorated straw hats, men in white suits wearing the latest straw boaters. Images of - particularly - the 1910’s to the swinging and colourful times of the 1920’s/30’s/40’s. Early buildings in Katoomba represented stylish architecture, decorative features and colours representing the respective eras. With colours enhancing the mountain environment, the colours of the landscape, the lifestyle ... the cool mountain pools and waterfalls. The bling and glamour of the local dance halls, the theatres.

Today? The shades of cream, browns, ‘heritage’ greens do nothing to show Katoomba’s history - or story. Molong? Same!

Town Centre plans display times

(From page 1) In August, the Molong and Canowindra communities were invited to explore and shape ideas regarding ways to create more attractive and functional spaces.

Consultation sessions identified the values of the community to ensure the project effectively adds value for the community.

The key messages to come out of these consultations for Molong were that the community impression of the town centre is tired and in need of modernisation. The Molong community would like to see their town centre as sophisticated and stylish.

The Canowindra community’s impression of their town centre was that it is part of a historic village and they would like to maintain the nostalgic feeling of the main street.

They also wish to feel welcome, safe and comfortable when they are using the space.

The papers outlining the suggested changes to achieve these visions will go to the

Council meeting of 27 October with the intention to be displayed publicly on Council’s website from Wednesday 28 October for a period of 21 days. Representatives from Sala4D and King+Campbell will be in both towns next week to answer any questions you may have about the findings of their consultations.

Covid-19 restrictions eased

Gatherings in outdoor public spaces and group bookings at restaurants will be increased to 30 people under a relaxation of COVID-19 rules.

From this Friday, 23 October: · 30 people can gather outdoors in public spaces (previously this was 20); · 30 customers per booking, and 30 customers per table at hospitality venues (previously the rule was a maximum of 10); · In addition, as of last Friday

16 October, corporate functions of up to 300 people can now be held at any appropriate premises, including at restaurants, subject to a COVID-Safe plan (previously just function centres).

Additionally, from 1 December, the number of people who can attend weddings will be lifted to 300 people subject to the four square metre rule indoors and two square metre rule outdoors.

The forum provided the opportunity for local growers, producers and leading representatives from the export sector to discuss the opportunities and support that is available.

RDA Central West CEO, Sam Harma said the forum was a great success and feedback has been positive.

"Some of the best produce in New South Wales is grown right here in the Central West so it was wonderful to hear that some of our local farmers are now considering expanding their operations and seeking other avenues for their produce," said Mr Harma.

October’s Cumnock Markets

Though a windy market day, the rain held off to see some local Cumnock residents proudly showcasing their homemade goods last Saturday, 17th October.

Pinning tablecloths down while holding their hair back – the wind certainly didn’t stop anyone from having a laugh and enjoying the spirit of community.

Among the smiling faces behind each stall was one Mrs Margery “Marge” Sparkes – described by many as “one of the queens of Cumnock” – who also celebrated an incredible 90th birthday milestone last week.

“I don’t look 90 – and I don’t feel it either!” said a very bubbly, and friendly Mrs Sparkes.

Marge’s beautifully handmade sock covers and tea towels were among many other creative crafts, treats, and homewares tables: from relishes, jams, and delicious home-baked goods, to more tables lined with an array of natural products, trendy giftwares, handcrafted jewellery, talented crochet and knitted items – and some fresh produce for good measure.

Though the Cumnock Markets have largely been organised by Marge Sparkes’ involvement in previous years, it will always “take a village to get things done”, she said with a confident smile.

Local ladies, Carol Kerr and Pat Gilmore have now stepped in as the ‘go-to girls’ for the last

couple of market days in Cumnock, with hopes to see more and more foot traffic with each event.

“It’s really great for the community,” said Carol. “The more people we can get out here to support our locals – the better.”

With the markets running on the third Saturday of each month - the next Cumnock Market day will be scheduled for the 21 November.

Let’s rally together to support our local Cabonne people and spend some time in Cumnock next month.

Hopefully there will be another mouthwatering lemon slice up for grabs!

It is a sad fact of life that many of us remain indifferent to the issue of safe and careful driving.

The number of deaths on our roads confirms how suddenly and unexpectedly life can be shattered by the impact of road accidents.

We need to pay careful attention to advice offered about driving and using our roads. Major injury and death can instantly turn worlds upside down – and so often for the want of following rules based on common sense.

No one is immune to the possibility of senseless and avoidable tragedy.

Advocate. Orange Travellers from New Zealand now able to fly into NSW and the NT without being subject to quarantine.

But it’s what happens after that which has created a faux pas situation. Kiwis and those coming from New Zealand are catching flights to states not party to this arrangement.

While having to quarantine in Victoria, SA, WA and Tasmania, they cannot be excluded from those states – nor stopped it seems from catching connecting flights from Sydney to Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth and Hobart.

Molong The way in which US President Donald Trump has trivialised and made light of his COVID-19 infection, has potential for Americans and indeed for people around the world to regard the coronavirus less seriously than should be the case. Trump’s treatment was extraordinary; the care he was offered and the drugs he was given are not available to others. This makes his ‘recovery’ abnormal and the world should view his situation with caution. To copycat his cavalier attitude could be disastrous.

MCS raise $17,000 for Heart Foundation

Recently Molong Central School students from Kinder to Year 6 raised an amazing $17,239.95 for the Heart Foundation in the 'Jump Rope for Heart' program. Here is their report of their proud efforts...

During Term 3 at Molong Central School our students from Kindergarten to Year 6 have been involved in the Jump Rope for Heart Program - a fantastic physical activity and fundraising program by the Heart Foundation that has been running for 36 years. Jump Rope for Heart encourages children to have a positive mindset towards exercise, healthy eating and heart health while also raising vital funds to assist those who are suffering from heart disease. As heart disease kills thousands of Australians every year, our school really wanted to strive to raise lifesaving funds.

During the term our students have been very active during physical education lessons, learning new skipping skills and setting themselves small goals to achieve throughout the term. The program will culminate with a ‘Jump Off Day’ on Friday 25th September where the students will involved in rotational skipping activities allowing them to show off the skills they have learnt and to have some fun with their friends.

We are so proud to say that our school community has raised an amazing $ 17,239.95 for the Heart Foundation. This amount definitely surpassed our goals and made us so proud

that we have done something very special that will make a difference to so many lives.

Early CPR and Defibrillation saw Manildra man, Stephen Dickie, survive “Sudden Death”

With an average of 1 in 10 people said to survive out-ofhospital cardiac arrests (OHCA), it is estimated around 30,000 people across Australia and New Zealand experience this urgent life or death situation each year – which highlights a pivotal need for increased community first-aid training, and education.

The chance of OHCA survival reduces by 10% with every minute that passes – meaning sufferers have a frightening total of up to 10 minutes to receive immediate help before results become fatal – this means, every second counts.

For 38-year-old Manildra man Stephen Dickie - quick action by his partner, Guin in administering CPR - Defibrillation administered by local VOA (Volunteer Ambulance Officers) and Molong based paramedics helped the father-of-two to narrowly escape probable death just months ago, in June of this year.

Waking suddenly in the early hours of a June morning it only took a moment for quick thinking Guin Missingham to come to the realisation that her partner Steve Dickie was having some kind of a seizure. “(Initially), I didn’t know what was going on,” said Guin. “I turned on the bedroom lights, and from there – I could see that (Steve) was having a seizure.”

With Steve entering a critical state of nonresponsiveness - Guen frantically phoned triple 000 for help. She then remembered the CPR training from school days which she applied to Steve until two local Volunteer Ambulance Officers (VAO) arrived.

Waking to sounds of hysteria, 7-year-old Ripley Williamson followed Guin’s instructions in a desperate attempt to keep her busy, and away from the bedroom where she was performing CPR. Ripley unlocked and opened doors while they waited for emergency crews to arrive - and switched every house light on so help services could locate them quickly.

“We live half an hour from Orange, and I thought, I can’t do CPR (alone) on my partner for 40 minutes – then I had Dave and Simone come in the door – and just take over to perform a miracle.”

Arriving quickly at the traumatic scene, VAO’s Dave and Simone rushed inside the house to see a frantic Guin kneeling over an unconscious Steve - performing CPR. With both hands firmly pushing down on Steve’s chest Guin had commenced CPR after he had suddenly woken her when he had sat up in bed before collapsing from cardiac arrest.

“To see Guin actually on (Steve’s) chest when we walked into that bedroom – it was just a shock,” Dave recounted.

The VAO’s persevered against the clock to continue CPR before delivering Steve a first shock to his heart via an Automated External Defibrillation (AED) machine. It was unsuccessful.

“I was sitting in the lounge room (where) I had both of the girls on my lap” said Guin. “We could hear the defibrillator talking – we could hear when (the AED) delivered the first shock saying that it was unsuccessful – and I could hear (Dave and Simone) continuing with chest compressions.”

Steve continued to lay motionless. With no signs of breathing Guin and the VAO’s traumatic experience with Steve’s “sudden death” experience continued. This is a serious state of unconsciousness requiring immediate cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Cardiac arrest stops the heart suddenly with the person generally collapsing and breathing abnormally. A result of blood cessation through the veins which then leads to the brain no longer receiving oxygen.

The VAO’s continued with chest compressions. The AED machine gave another “shock advised” prompt with the word “CLEAR” filling the air again. Steve was then delivered a second shock.

Miraculously – a pulse was suddenly identified.

The recent global initiative ‘Restart a Heart’ reminds residents of Cabonne’s communities about the importance of CPR training and the need for quick access to Defibrillators and training.

Guin Missingham and Steve Dickie survived the Cardiac Arrest nightmare that could have taken Steve’s life and changed their children’s lives forever. “CPR training can be the difference between whether or not a person survives cardiac arrest” said Guin.

“You can do a course that doesn’t cost that much, and that takes less than a day to learn how to deliver CPR. For less than a day’s-worth of effort, and a couple hundred dollars – you might be able to save someone you love, or even a stranger – so it’s worth so much more than that.” See Page 7 CPR Training

“When Steve started breathing again, I remember thinking ‘oh my god Dave - he’s breathing’” said Simone, her head shaking in disbelief. “He had a pulse, I could feel a pulse – and I could feel Steve’s breath coming onto my hand. I remember looking at Dave and thinking ‘wow... we did it!’

Though a message Guin never thought she’d have to receive – the words of an AET machine communicating her partner’s life status – they became the only word she held onto.

Molong Paramedics, Sally Lapins and Maritsa Karamina rushed out of their doors when they received the NSW Ambulance Service message at around 2.20 a.m. Driving to the Manildra area - 20 kms away - and an estimated 20 minutes drive - both Sally and Maritsa were relieved to know that the local VAO’s were already in attendance and had managed to stabilise Steve’s condition.

People who suffer Cardiac Arrest do not always survive.

“I’ve been in this job for almost 20 years” said Sally.

“Steve is the first survivor I’ve (personally) ever seen.”

“Our volunteers did all of the hard work before we got there. We confirmed that he (Steve) was breathing spontaneously – he was still unconscious – but breathing spontaneously.”

Emergency services continued to pour into the family home - delivering incredible levels of support to Steve and his family in any way they possibly could. Such is the strength and response from a village community like Manildra.

Steve saw his luck in being on the favourable side of the 1 in 10 statistic –saying he “literally owes his life” to both his partner, Guinevere Missingham, and to two incredible Volunteer Ambulance Officers (VAO).

“I’m infinitely thankful,” said an emotional Steve.

“There’s not even a word or words that can describe it – it goes beyond that completely.”

Under the impression that emergency crews would be dispatched from Orange – the nearest main town to Manildra, and 45 kilometres away – Guin remembered the feeling of losing hope.

“I’d been there (already) doing CPR for 10 minutes, thinking that there was no chance.”

Guin needed help, and grew increasingly doubtful she could continue CPR – a skill she’d picked up many years before in her high school days.

“During the ordeal our house was just full of calm, compassionate people that were giving me hugs – making sure I was okay, offering me a cup of tea,” said Guin.

“They kept the girls distracted so we could go through what we needed to go through with our information and paperwork... it was an unbelievable time.”

VAO Dave phoned his daughter at 3:00am, the family’s occasional babysitter, who got out of bed ready to take over care of the children so Guin could make the commute to hospital in the ambulance with Steve.

“Even though we’re only a small community in

With October 16th marking ‘Restart a Heart’ day - emergency services are urging people to understand the importance of early intervention with OHCA cases as knowing how to perform CPR can achieve the best possible outcome for those people – it saves lives.

“Guin doing what she did – starting that compression straight away because she knew there was trouble – the quicker you can do CPR and (start) early defibrillation – the better the outcome” added Dave.

“So, if anybody is out there that suspects someone’s had a heart attack – or is in cardiac arrest – compressions and early defibrillation are critical. I can’t stress that more than anything.”

VAO Simone described the feeling of pride in being able to provide relief to Steve and his family that night - with the scene marking an extremely close-to-home subject from Simone’s past – and the underpinning factor for why she decided to join the First Responders volunteer crew.

“My partner had melanoma cancer and died 20 years ago – he used to have epileptic fits” said Simone with her voice breaking as she remembered her own family’s trauma. .

“I had two young children myself – I remember being scared, doing CPR, and waiting for an ambulance to arrive. That feeling… I don’t want anyone to have to go through that. If we can be there in three minutes instead of 20 minutes, well – that’s why I do what I do. I do it for the community – and it makes me proud of what we do.”

If it weren’t for Guin’s early delivery of CPR, and the VAO’s early intervention with a defibrillator – it would have been a very different outcome for Steve that night.

“It’s an honour...” said Dave. “To actually walk into a house and see someone in that position – where you see a loved one doing CPR on them – and (then) following it through with the two shocks to get them back breathing, (to get them) literally back to life… is the biggest reward I’ve ever had in the service.”

While Dave talked about the handfuls of positive comments they’d received as VAO’s over the years, he described how nothing had come close to what that night meant to him.

“Nothing beats this (particular) job – this job tops everything I’ve ever done in the nine years that I’ve been with the service.”

For Simone, she talked about how a ‘just get the job done’ adrenaline kicked in, and what it was going to mean for Guin and the kids to have Steve “come back to his family where he belonged.” She also spoke of the invaluable training they’d received for these exact types of critical situations. “(And) I really would like to say thank you to our trainers – Sally Lapins, and Graham Turner – they put in endless hours. If it wasn’t for them, we couldn’t do what we do… these guys prepare us (for these circumstances) – and they deserve as much credit as anyone does.”

For Guin, the first-aid course she completed from her high-school years – where her mother urged her to obtain her certificate in CPR administration – was her personal catalyst for Steve’s survival today.

For someone that certainly knows how much it’s worth, young Steve is well and truly ‘back with his family’ now – viewing the value of life through a completely different lens.

“It puts a new light on everything – on every single thing,” he said, as he watched his two bubbly daughters running and giggling around the ambulance station.

Though he now has a mobile defibrillator in his chest monitoring his heart rhythms for the next decade – Steve remains in disbelief that he’s here today, and still struggles to put his overwhelming level of gratitude into words.

“I’ll never be able to describe how thankful I am. Grateful... ever grateful.”

Life was not easy for the Gryllis family and their neighbours and surrounding communities on Patmos. “I was only around 10 years old when the Civil War in Greece followed World War II. “My family decided to leave our home and move to Patmos after the rebels walked into our home and took everything. Our food, furniture, animals ... everything”.

Deciding that Patmos would be safer ... the Gryllis family moved to the island where they grew food, traded with communities on other islands from their small timber boat until Michael decided to move to Australia”.

My love of fresh foods started in Molong with the sensational flavours from my dad’s vast vegie garden, fresh creamy milk from our house-cow, fresh chicken, duck, eggs, meats enhanced by mum’s slow cooking skills - and annual coastal holidays enjoying fresh fish.

Add the fresh foods of Molong produced by the Greek owned Cassimaty’s Pantheon Cafe - fresh ‘real’ white bread baked locally ... grapes and other fruits from Jean and David Bennett’s orchard ... All formed the beginning of my food adventure.

Michael Gryllis recently celebrated his 85th birthday - a time in his life that one would think means retirement, slowing down, time to stop and smell the beautiful roses and flowers Thea grows in their (award-winning) home garden.

Visting the Gryllis home on their one day a week ‘day-off’ the lovely couple were still working. Michael tending their bountiful vegie garden and grapevines - and Thea mixing delicious cakes using her favourite Greek recipes.

“I retired a few years ago” said Michael. “But I missed my customers at Patmos” - most who have become life-long friends since Michael Gryllis arrived in Australia in 1956 eventually settling in Orange where he worked with his older brother Theo building their first cafe in Summer Street. Eventually, younger brother, Chris joined his brothers. Together they watched their collective and individual enterprises grow in their new hometown. Hardwork, long hours, long weeks, months and years of committment and loyalty was what they knew from their upbringing.

Returning to Patmos in 1964,

growing in Gippsland (Victoria) enhanced by the amazing cosmopolitan Greek and Italian cafes/restaurants of Melbourne ... helped me to discover what I call ‘food for the soul’.

In recent years on returning to Molong - my food discovery continued ... therefore, I was very happy to find my way to the good foods produced by Michael and Thea Gryllis at their Patmos Garden Cafe in North Orange.

Patmos Garden Cafe, to me, is a combination of the Greek Goddesses (Demeter Goddess of Agriculture: Herstia Goddess of Feasting; Dionysus Goddess of Wine; and of course, Aphrodite Goddess of Pleasure).

Michael and Thea noticed each other in a local church. Michael clearly remembers the meeting “We met at a quarter past 12 (o’clock) on 15 August 1964 and we married on 20 September (1964)”. Thea joined Michael in Australia - “It was very hard” she recalls. “I did not speak English and it was my first time away from home and my family. “We lived above the first cafe in Summer Street settling into the upstairs flat of 4 bedrooms with Theo and Chris and their families”.

Thea and Michael worked hard in their continuing business life owning cafes, the Tourist Hotel and eventually 20 years building a reception/catering business ‘Allcorn’s All Star Ballroom’ a popular establishment for weddings, celebratory events, dinners, dancing etc. m. “We had 3 weddings every weekend” said Michael - “One on Fridays, one Saturday mornings and another one on Saturday nights. In total we catered for 900 weddings over those 20 years. 35-40 a year”.

In amongst creating and developing their own businesses, Thea and Michael proudly raised their 3 children.

DIXONS POINT LONG CROSSING MOVES AHEAD In a boon for the Cabonne region, the long-awaited Dixons Long Point Crossing is becoming a reality thanks to the Australian Government contributing $9.8 million in the recent 2020-21 Federal Budget.

We anticipate work will commence on the Cabonne side first, to allow access to the bridge site. The bridge itself will be done next and then the approaches on the Mudgee side.

The preliminary costing on the new bridge and approaches for the Dixon Long Point project have come in at $25.2 million.

The project is funded entirely by the Australian Government and any additional funds available will go towards further road improvements on both sides of the river.

The project is now fully funded and can move to the public consultation phase.

The Dixons Long Point Crossing is a project 160 years in the making, so I am very proud to be able to say that it can now become a reality.

The upgraded crossing will deliver a wide range of benefits to the Calare electorate and New South Wales by creating a crucial new link between the Mudgee, Cabonne and Orange areas, as well as the wider Central West, the Hunter and beyond.

The plans are expected to go on public exhibition with Mid Western Regional Council next week, while residents affected by the project will be contacted directly.

Preliminary plans and designs, as well as engineering, geotechnical studies, surveying and a safety audit have now been completed and a new location for the crossing has been identified.

Environmental work and cultural and heritage studies are also in progress.

The Budget includes a desperately-needed $50 million extension of • the Emergency Water Infrastructure Rebate Scheme - something I've fought hard to deliver to local farmers.

More than $33 million will be spent on incentives for young Australians to take up farm work.

An additional $2 billion will be available in concessional loans for • farmers recover from the drought.

Boosting export capabilities and technology including: $222.2 million for digital services to take farmers to market; $10.9 million for building a more competitive export meat industry; $10 million for busting congestion for plant export industries and; $71.1 million for Australian export services critical to ensure our products make it to export markets.

There's $2 billion in new funding for dams, pipelines and weirs.

WHAT'S IN IT FOR WORKERS AND BUSINESS OWNERS •

There are tax cuts for 11 million Aussies. Low and middle income earns will receive a one-off additional tax offset of up to $1,080.

A new JobMaker hiring credit will be available for employers who hire people on JobSeeker, aged 16-35. This will support around 450,000 jobs for young people.

•

A new 50 per cent wage subsidy will support 100,000 new apprentices and traineeships.

•

The $1 billion JobTrainer Fund will create up to 340,000 free or low cost training places for school leavers and job seekers.

•

The $1.5 billion Modern Manufacturing Strategy will make Aussie manufacturers more resilient, competitive and better equipped to compete globally, including strategic Government investments in projects that help manufacturers to scale up and create jobs.

The Australian Government will spend $14 billion in new and accelerated infrastructure projects, supporting 100,000 jobs on worksites across the country. The Budget also includes a $2 billion investment in road safety upgrades to save lives.

•

There is $1 billion for councils to immediately upgrade local roads, footpaths and street lighting.

WHAT'S IN IT FOR LOCAL HOUSEHOLDS AND COMMUNITIES • • •

There’s a record $115.5 billion spending on health including • hospitals, disability services and $1.6 billion for a record 23,000 additional home care packages.

Two $250 cash payments will be given to those who receive a pension or family payment: one in December and • again in March next year.

Education will receive a $51 billion investment, including $10.3 billion for early childhood education and child care; $550.3 million for additional university places and short courses; and $1 billion for university research.

NBN Co has been allocated $300 million to improve internet connectivity, including upgrades to the fixedline network, providing an estimated 950,000 homes and businesses in regional Australia with access to ultra-fast broadband speeds.

There’s also a $250 million Regional Tourism Recovery Package to boost local infrastructure in regional communities, particularly tourism-related infrastructure, and help regional tourism businesses adapt their offerings and marketing to appeal to domestic visitors.

Partnership provides 85 million meals to Australians in need

Australian family-owned agribusinesses, Manildra Group and MSM Milling, have marked a unique partnership with food producers Simplot and Rinoldi, and leading Food relief organization, Foodbank Australia, resulting in 85 million meals donated to Aussies in need.

The Australian businesses have donated flour since 2004 as well as oil and sugar since 2009 to manufacturers Rinoldi and Simplot, as part of Foodbank’s vital collaborative food supply programs.

Manildra Group and MSM Milling source wheat and canola from local farmers, handle the milling and consolidation locally and help people across Australia, including in the Central West of NSW, with finished products distributed via the Foodbank network of front-line charities.

Manildra Group’s flour is donated to Rinoldi which produces pasta specifically for Foodbank to distribute across Australia. MSM Milling’s auzure canola oil and Sunshine Sugar are donated to Simplot to produce Leggo’s Napoletana Pasta Sauce.

The Manager of Manildra Flour Mill, John Brunner, says each year Manildra’s flour donation delivers five million serves of pasta to Australians experiencing all types of hardships. “Now, more than ever the Foodbank Pasta Program is invaluable to those Australians who need it most. Australians who were struggling to get enough food before COVID-19 are now going hungry more often, with 43 per cent going a day a week without eating. As an Australian-owned family business we’re proud to step up and donate 350 tonnes of locally milled flour and 12 tonnes of sugar

also correct that organic matter in the top 150 mm is very dynamic – it is constantly being created and destroyed depending on prevailing seasonal conditions and farm management practices.

Soil organic matter stored below 150 mm down to one metre (ie 850 mm total) is much more stable and while the level will be slow to increase, it will remain there almost indefinitely and be much less impacted by changing seasonal conditions and farm management practices.

So lets examine the amount of soil per hectare in the top 150 mm and calculate how much carbon is in each 1% of soil organic matter, and compare that to the amount of soil and carbon between 150 mm and one metre deep.

Many of the central west soils that I have analysed have organic matter levels around 2% in the top 150 mm. At 9 tonnes of carbon per 1% SOM per hectare that tells us we have about 18 tonnes of carbon per hectare stored in the top 150 mm of the soil profile.

By careful soil management we should be able to raise SOM to about 4% in the top 150 mm, raising the carbon level to 36 tonnes per hectare, an increase of 2% of SOM or 18 tonnes of carbon per hectare, over a five year period.

The actual increase will be subject to many variable factors but certainly an increase of this magnitude is possible and feasible.

One tonne of carbon will make 3.67 tonnes of carbon dioxide, so 18 tonnes of carbon is equivalent to 66 tonnes of CO2.

The way the carbon market operates is to call each tonne of CO2 an Australian Carbon Credit Unit, or ACCU for short.

The recent announcement by the Federal Minister for Energy and Emissions Reduction, Angus Taylor, that soil carbon sequestration is an integral component of the Government’s Low Emissions Technology Statement has the potential to benefit the farming and grazing industries in many ways.

Early in this series of articles we discussed at some length the importance of carbon in relation to soil health and agricultural productivity, and we touched on the issue of soil carbon sequestration and the potential impact on Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions.

I have been a strong advocate for many years that the farming community should be paid for storing carbon in their soil, on the basis that it will encourage farmers to adopt improved farming practices resulting in sustainability, productivity, product yield, moisture infiltration and retention and farm profit improvements.

Most discussions about soil carbon have revolved around the top 150 mm (6 inches) of the soil profile, where the majority of soil nutrients are stored and biological activity happens. This is also where increased organic matter (remember soil organic matter (SOM) contains about 60% carbon) is generally stored, and can range from 0.5% in degraded soils up to about 6-7% in central west soils that have not been over utilised in the past.

If we examine the amount of organic matter stored throughout the soil profile down to one metre in depth, the amount decreases as we go deeper into the soil. It is

Each tonne of soil carbon can store four tonnes of water. hectare for five years with a final payment of $528 per hectare, depending on the actual amount of extra carbon stored in the soil over the five year period.

Below 150 mm there is a greater opportunity to store more carbon and this will depend on further research to determine just how much carbon is there and what the potential to store more is.

Each tonne of carbon in the soil profile can store an additional four tonnes of water, and one tonne of water is equivalent to one millimetre of rainfall per hectare, so an extra 18 tonnes of carbon per hectare will store an additional 72 mm of rain.

We will be hearing more about this program over the next few months as all the protocols are sorted out. It is an exciting opportunity for the farming community, both from a financial perspective and a land management perspective.

Once again it was a very good quality yarding made up of around 8,000 both trade and heavy weight new season lambs. There were a few pens of trade weight Merino lambs and very few old lambs yarded. A full field of buyers were in attendance and operating.

Compared to the previous sales very strong market trade weight new season lambs were $17 cheaper selling from $156 to $201/head to average between 780c and 810c/kg cwt. The few trade weight old lambs sold from $161 to $192/ head. Heavy weight lambs were $7 to $12 cheaper with the new season lambs over 24kg selling from $193 to $237/head to average between 715c and 765c/kg cwt.

Heavy weight old lambs sold from $188 to $250/head. Merino lambs were $10 cheaper with the trade weights selling from $142 to $184/head. The feeders paid $156/head for a pen of young new season lambs. Hoggets sold to $188/head.

There were 990 mixed mutton yarded where most grades were $3 to $5/head cheaper. Merino ewes sold from $82 to $180 while crossbred ewes sold from $150 to $210/head. Merino wethers sold from $143 to $173/head. The restockers

CTLX Cattle 20 October

It was a fair quality yarding with reasonable numbers of prime cows and grown heifers. There was a few pens of ideal feeder cattle and prime grown steers though the quality of the trade cattle was back. Not all the regular buyers were operating with a couple of southern trade processors not buying.

Young cattle to the trade were up to 14c cheaper with prime vealers selling to 420c/ kg. Prime steer yearlings sold from 370c to 431c while the prime heifer yearlings sold from 370c to 429c/kg. Feeder cattle were 10c dearer with the feeder steers selling from 380c to 436c while the feeder heifers sold from 369c to 412c/kg. Young cattle to the restockers were around firm with the young steers selling from 513c to 550c while the young restocker heifers sold from 409c to 455c/kg.

Grown steers were firm while the grown heifers were up to 12c/kg cheaper. Grown steers sold from 320c to 380c while the prime grown heifers sold from 318c also to 380c/kg. Cows were 9c cheaper with the 3 scores selling from 290c to 298c/kg.

The prime heavy weight cows sold from 295c to 317c to average 312c/kg. Bulls sold to 347c/kg.

Molong Bowls The Club hosted the Zone Triples Championships at the weekend and original Molong champ Steve Shannon Jnr (2nd from right) was in town representing Mudgee (where he now lives and works).

Molong Women’s Bowls The Molong Ladies Bowling Club introduced a new format for this year’s singles competition called “Consistency Bowls”. The format departs from the usual scoring methods on a structured points system with the winners being the first to reach 100 points.

Just a reminder, the next round will include 3 games scheduled on 24/10/20 preferred or to be con concluded by 25/10/20. Spectators are welcome, under COVID rules to experience the competitive nature within the new consistency format

Molong Golf Wednesday Golf: There were only 4 ladies at Golf last Wednesday, but we enjoyed a 9 hole Stableford with Helen Balcomb the winner with 15 stableford points.

Next Wednesday 28th we will play 9 holes followed by lunch at Sweetness Cafe. ******************* Sunday Mixed Golf: Last Sunday we saw 12 players come out for a hit before heading home to watch Holden take out its last Bathurst win which was great to see.

We drew partners for a 2 person Ambrose and played 12 holes. Winners were Justin and Mark with Drew and Darren runners up.

Congratulations to Justin who had an Eagle on the 13th hole par 5.

Thank you to the volunteers who were out on Saturday doing jobs around the course.

With forecasts of heavy rain and a number of our regulars unavailable the October Disc Golf League Day in Molong still managed to attract a very impressive 21 players on a day where forecasts suggested that heavy rains and wind were on the way.

Despite the forecasts in the end there was no hint of rain and quite a few sunny periods, although the gusty wind certainly played a part in the day's shooting.

The day saw two players, Jo and Jacqui, take on their first ever League Day, with both Make your own disc golf basket to practise carding very impressive at home - like Marc Mathews did.
