The Express was advised (Tuesday) just before going to press - that a Molong resident has tested positive for COVID-19.

Unknowing that they were positive, the resident had been active in Molong, Orange and Blayney over three days

this week.

Covid-19 testing clinics were reinstated at the Molong Railway Station on Tuesday and will remain for the rest of the week.

Molong might have dodged a Covid bullet last week.

That goes for Orange and our local villages too - where we go quite often.

Four removalists, making a delivery to a house in Speedy Street were apprehended by police last Friday.

The Police had been tipped off that one of the men had been tested positive for Covid-19.

The removalists allegedly knew this, had been told to stay home and isolate, but came here anyway They may face 6 months jail time said the NSW Police Minister David Elliott.

Police say they established that the men had travelled from West Hoxton to Figtree, before travelling to Molong, stopping in regional areas including South Bowenfels and Orange along the way - including the North Orange MacDonalds' drive-through.

Police escorted the men and their vehicles back to Sydney.

While it appears that the men did not visit any other Molong locations or businesses local Health authorities reacted quickly and immediately set up Covid-19 testing clinics at the Molong Rec. on Saturday and at the Railway Station on Sunday - with a gratifying response from locals and visitors.

NSW Minister for Police and Emergency Services David Elliott said he was troubled by this significant breach of the Public Health Orders.

“This thoughtless act has now placed our regional communities in NSW at the greatest risk so far with this pandemic,” Elliott said.

Moreover, the mother of two of the removalists was found dead on Monday morning and was later confirmed as a COVID-19 case.

On top of this a confirmed COVID-19 case that travelled to Blayney and Parkes last week to deliver pet food supplies.

Blayney residents were told to travel to Orange and Bathurst to get tested for COVID-19.

The Molong removalist visitors have been charged and are expected to appear in Orange District Court on August 30.

'Jab' receivers had no complaints aboutthe service with one townie commenting "Like others in the community - I wasn't that keen to have the vaccination - but I'm glad I did. I think we all have a responsibility to protect our own health and that of others.

Molong back to “normal” after COVID scare A week of national attention

Still, Eric and Stan continue to walk their prams and trollies around town.

Seriously, Molong’s shops, businesses, servo, hotels and clubs continue to be challenged by the effects of COVID-19.

Loss of travellers, tourists and local shoppers plus the dreadful weather conditions has created a visible downturn. How we miss the Sydney and Melbournesiders discovering these parts.

Maybe it was bound to happen - and it did last Friday when an unremarkable, so called “removalist” vehicle drove into Speedy Street just after 2.30 p.m.

Driving through Orange, stopping over at a Macca’s drive-through the vehicles with four men on board was anything but ‘unremarkable’ with confirmed COVID cases on board.

Thankfully, through the quick action of NSW Govt health professionals and the NSW Police - the truck and the men were intercepted and escorted back to Sydney and isolation apparently before they had a chance to come to downtown Molong.

The TV media got on board quickly too.

I’ll bet lots of you have had calls from far flung family and friends.

Channel 10 went national on Sunday night’s news with the story, including a “vox pop” by myself.

Just for the record I wasn’t attention seeking - just happened to be at the Railway Station getting tested on Sunday when the cameras turned up.

Local social media (sometimes antisocial media) also lit up. One memorable post seemed to suggest that everyone, including the real estate agent should be held accountable.

Why not throw in the builder and the truck manufacturer too?

Reg has someting to say about antisocial media generally on Page 11 It is reported that two of the travellers had been tested for COVID-19 with both testing positive and also reported on the city media that a languge barrier and a misunderstanding of the lock-down rules was the apparent cause of the four not complying with the isolation requirements. Incredibly, the mother of two of the men died from COVID while all this was going on.

The new residents to Molong are now in lockdown. With the fear and anxiety which accompanies this health crisis - we hope that locals will warmly welcome and accept the family as is the tradition in the town.

The alleged culprits will appear in Orange District Court in August.

It will be interesting.

As they say in this business “this story has legs” Nine News reported on Monday afternoon that family members, including the twins (photographed) were removed from the home and isolated in cars on the street, which was cordoned off as emergency services responded to the death of their mother.

In a statement released on Monday afternoon, a spokesperson for NSW Health confirmed the woman was a close contact of another COVID-19 case.

Monday 19 July "On Friday 16 July 2021, Cabonne Council was made aware of a breach of the Public Health Order.

Removalists travelling from metropolitan Sydney made a number of stops across the Central West, with a final stop in Molong.

The behaviour of these removalists was reckless and irresponsible, and action has been taken accordingly, with Court Attendance Notices issued. A COVID-19 drive through testing facility was set up in Molong over the weekend and Council thanks those community members who utilised this service.

A big thank you also to the NSW Health and emergency services staff for their quick response to the situation, and for conducting COVID-19 tests - particularly with the terrible weather. It appears

that there have been no new cases of COVID recorded in the Central West, but this incident serves as a reminder that we must continue to be vigilant in our responses to this virus.

There is a lot of misinformation in relation to COVID-19 at the moment. It is important that people follow the official advice from NSW Health.

I urge anyone who is experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, no matter how mild, to get tested and selfisolate until you know your results.

Continue to remain socially distanced, wear your mask and follow check-in procedures to reduce the chance of spreading the virus.

Cabonne Swimming Pools “Grab your cozzies and head to the pool”

Question: Do the people of Molong want to be Olympic aspirants ... or want their pool to simply ‘take a dip’?

The Molong Swimming Pool is currently under consideration by Cabonne Council’s “Cabonne Swimming Pools Master Plan” - along with the other public swimming pools across Cabonne.

Comments on the Master Plan have been called for with the deadline being Wednesday of this week. Hopefully pool users and their families will have provided feedback to concerns they have about the pool operations. Here are a few thoughts based on comments the Express has verbally received from the ‘silent majority’.

by Rozzi Smith The photo above taken a few decades ago (maybe 1960’s) shows local ‘kids’ (could that be Barry Thomas in the front with Terry Brown following) in what was a simple setting with dressing sheds made of tin at the back and a timber building (to the right) which was a delightful entrance/kiosk/operator’s ‘office’. The little kid’s pool can be seen (back, right) and the group of willow’s and other giant trees (to the left and back) which were once a feature of the Molong Pool. Nowdays no trees - manufactured sails instead!

People from Orange and other places often came to Molong to enjoy the pool and a picnic on the green grass shaded by the trees. Yes, the Molong Pool was simple, popular, affordable for families, and wait for it ... filled with the colour ‘brown’ water. In earlier days - the water in the pool was no different than taking a dip in the Molong Creek or a farm dam. But no-one really cared!

Back then - kids could jump and dive into the pool - bomb, splash ... throw balls and generally have fun. Simple fun. If the days were hot - the manager of the pool would keep the gates open for night swimming. It gave the kids of the town not only a break from the summer heat - but something to do - day or night. It was called ‘entertainment’! The pool during the long summer holidays - weekends, after school served our small rural town incredibly well. The word ‘simplicity’ - being together as a community - are the words that come to mind. Fast forward to the past 10 years and the lead up years ...

In these current times of OH&S and liability insurance focus, costs, considertion of residents changing needs - the Molong Pool has become far from the days of simply ‘going for a dip’.

Today’s community seeks lap swimming facilities, water aerobics, hot water showers, artificial shade ... and if possible water features like in other places for the kids to play.

Today’s Molong Pool has many ‘do not’ and ‘no’ signs around the fences, entry, sitting areas.

A place encouraging enjoyment?? No. This is one of the reasons why kids and families still head to the natural water holes of the Weir on the Molong Creek.

However, the Royal Life-Saving Australia audit (2018) identified that across Cabonne’ swimming pools - 40 infrastructure recommendations were found which will require Cabonne Council to fix - @ around a $3m investment. The highest priority recommendation being for an upgrade to the plant rooms at the Molong, Cumnok and Yeoval facilities. “The intention of these recommendations is to allow Cabonne Council to continue to provide safe and modern facilities to the community”. Sounds about right given the age of each of these pools. Council engaged consultants Otium in November 2020 to undertake a review of pools in Cabonne in order

to seek improvements and to devise a long-term plan for the ageing facilities to be brought up to today’s OH&S standards. This is a necessary requirement - critical in fact. It is good to see that the current Cabonne Council has ensured that this review be undertaken and to encourage ways to address the situation.

What I find scary is “Stage two of the review was largely focussed on the S355 pool committees. In consultation with the swimming pool committees it has been decided to abandon the current s355 committees at each pool and transition to a single advisory committee and go to the market for a management lease of ALL aquatic facilities in Cabonne.” Q: Will the indiviual towns and villages be happy about what appears to be Council’s desire to implement a centralised “one cap fits all - one set of rules” management and operational approach to Cabonne’s swimming pools?

Whilst local ratepayers may agree that this is the way of the future in order to achieve affordable swimming pool facilities across Cabonne Country - this will also mean that the long standing tradition of employing locally based operators is likely to increase the ‘gaps’ that Molong swimmers have already been experiencing with the current operator/ management system. We need: • Flexible operators who will extend the operating hours to enable early morning lap/ exercise swimmers - swimming club members and workers access to the pool before and after office hours/school hours. - 5 to 7 days a week.

• Operators who will be prepared to extend the operating hours to night swimming on the hot days.

• Operators who will be prepared to reinstate activities for kids and local families e.g. Pizza and Movie nights. School Holiday activity days/ nights. Family days. Specific days to encourage seniors, the wider community to put on their cozzies and head to the pool.

Whilst I take the point of the high cost of running e.g. the Molong Pool - and the lower cost of running Canowindra Pool (relating to paying customers - numbers through the gates) is obviously because the not so long ago refurbed Canowindra Pool(s) offers water play features, family areas, lap swimming, pools for the kids of varying depths and I understand has a local operator willing to extend services and hours.

All of the above brings families from throughout Cabonne. Cowra and Orange to Canowindra more bodies through the gates - more income - thus helping to reduce per swimmer costs.

Extend the hours at the Molong Pool, provide activities to meet the needs of the users (e.g. water aerobics, exercise activities, re-introduce longer opening hours) and see the higher usage outcomes. On another note advertise that the Molong Pool is open (it’s hard to know) PLUS reduce the entrance fee for kids and families.

One of Molong’s favourite young women is the lovely, helpful Steph. who has worked for some years now with Michael and Cheryn Johnson at Sweetness in Bank Street.

A small gathering was held at Sweetness on Sunday night to help Steph. celebrate her important birthday.

Molong resident, Carol Whiley has been burning the midnight oil sewing over 100 face masks for local residents.

“I’ve still got orders coming in” said Carol who has made masks of all shapes and sizes, colours and fabric designs.

Including for children which her grandson Ashton is happily modelling for his gran.

Selling for a mere $10 each - Carol’s handmade masks are available at the NRMA/Credit Union shop at the top end of Bank Street (next to Vinnies).

Bulky waste clean-up to take place in August

Cabonne Council is providing a bulky waste clean-up. This will allow collection of larger items and will enable items suitable for recycling to be diverted from landfill, thereby maximising the life of this valuable resource.

The collection will commence on Monday 9 August and go through to Friday 20 August. Council asks that all bulky waste be put out for collection the weekend before. All items are to be placed neatly next to the edge of the kerb, not blocking the footpath, at your normal weekly collection point.

Acceptable items for the clean-up include fridges, washing machines, wheelbarrows, barbeques, empty

paint tins, mattresses, small appliances, floor coverings and batteries. For a full list of items, please visit Council’s website.

Asbestos, fibro, insulation batts, cement bags, sawdust, tyres, paints, chemicals, cleaners, and unwanted medicines are among items that will not be collected.

Letters Farmers & Climate Action RE: 15th July story “Farmers need support, not dress-ups, to reap benefits of climate action.”

Your Thursday 15th July edition reported the calls from Farmers for Climate Action CEO, Fiona Davis, to the new leader of The Nationals. She called for The Nationals, which claim to represent regional Australia and farmers, to put aside party differences and urgently back a transition to a low carbon economy.

Here is the problem: there is a proportion of regional Australia and farmers that remain unconvinced that CO2 and man made greenhouse gases are driving climate change. Therefore some of The Nationals MPs represent their views.

Perhaps they consider that the climate was never static – after all the world has been shaped by ice ages and warm periods well before industrial activity. Or perhaps they consider that there are variations in the sun’s radiation. Or maybe they are sceptical that calls for carbon trading will open another avenue for greedy traders to fleece the rest of the community. In today’s environment of hyper (excessive, over-the-top) capitalism such an outcome is most likely.

Whatever the reason, some remain unconvinced. While ever today’s journalists ridicule such non conformists as irrational we will never know how much of the community is in the non-conformist camp. And therefore we will never understand the reluctance to embrace the low carbon economy.

The battles Australians must never forget

This month marks the 105th anniversary of very two significant and devastatingly costly battles fought by Australians on the Western Front during the First World War - the Battle of Fromelles and the Battle of Pozières.

On 19 July we remember the Battle of Fromelles, a battle that lasted 24 hours but tragically resulted in 5,533 Australian casualties, making it the single bloodiest day in our military history.

Just a few days later, on 23 July, the Battle of Pozières commenced and lasted six weeks.

In the Battle of Pozières Australian soldiers achieved success, capturing and holding the village of Pozières, gradually pushing the Germans back. However it was another extraordinarily brutal and costly battle for Australia, with over 23,000 casualties.

Tragically, of the almost 300,000 Australians who served on the Western Front, 45,000 lost their lives.

We must never forget the selfless service, courage and sacrifice of those men and women who served our nation in the First World War. It was a conflict which devastated a generation of Australians. That enormous loss, suffering and pain has echoed through the years and is still felt to this day.

Morrison and Coalition sink in Newspoll on the back of rollout shambles

Support for Scott Morrison and the government have slumped in Newspoll, in a major backlash against the botched vaccine rollout.

Labor has surged to a two-party lead of 5347%, compared with 5149% in the previous poll in late June.

The Australian reports the latest result is the worse for the Coalition this term, and if replicated at an election would deliver the government a clear loss.

Satisfaction with Morrison’s handling of the pandemic – which now sees lockdowns in the nation’s two largest states – plunged nine points in the last three weeks to 52%.

As the brought-forward Pfizer supplies start to arrive, confidence in the government’s management of the rollout is negative for the first time, with only 40% believing it being handled satisfactorily.

Morrison’s net approval in Newspoll – plus 6 – is at its lowest since the bushfire crisis, with an eight point overall shift. Anthony Albanese’s position worsened a little – he is on net minus 8. Despite a small drop, Morrison retains a solid lead over Albanese as better PM – 51-33% Both Labor and the Coalition are polling 39% on primary votes – a two point fall for the Coalition and an equal rise for Labor.

The poll saw an 18 point drop in satisfaction with the handling of COVID since April.

Satisfaction with the government’s handling of the rollout was 53% in April and 50% in late June - in this poll 40% are satisfied with the handling and 57% are not.

Sky News at the weekend reported Morrison had urged NSW premier Gladys Berejiklian to strengthen the Sydney lockdown. She did so soon after.

The prime ministerial intervention was likely superfluous because it was already clear harsher measures were needed.

But it was notable on a couple of grounds.

In the past Morrison strongly leaned to lockdown scepticism, praising Berejiklian as a woman after his own heart and pointing to the NSW gold standard of limiting

restrictions.

The much more infectious Delta variant has forced a change in the positions of both leaders.

Also, the Morrison intervention looked like the prime minister playing himself into the sharp end of the current COVID action, which is concentrated at the Mick Tsikas/AAP state level.

As both the NSW and Victorian governments struggle with serious outbreaks and the detail of their lockdowns, Morrison must be frustrated with his lack of direct power – apart from repeatedly restocking the ATM. That’s of course leaving aside the vaccine rollout, a federal responsibility, the mishandling of which Newspoll shows is dramatically burning the PM’s voter support.

Late last week, Morrison finally spoke with Pfizer chairman and CEO Albert Bouria. This call, federal sources say, had been scheduled some while ago. It is not clear whether that was before or after the PM heard of Kevin Rudd’s contact with Bouria.

The federal government insists the Pfizer bring-forward was entirely due to its efforts and nothing to do with Rudd.

Even so, it was a bad look to be talking direct to Bouria so late in the piece, and after Rudd. It had all the appearance of catch up.

As things stand, Berejiklian, Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews and Morrison are simultaneously under a great deal of heat.

In dealing with COVID, as Berejiklian will attest, you can go from hero to villain very rapidly; hailed in May as “the woman who saved Australia”, she’s pilloried in July for stuffing things up.

Morrison is suffering the same shift in public judgement.

And things are not likely to change in the near future – despite the brought-forward Pfizer supplies, there will be shortages for some time yet.

Remembering Ian Hanrahan - Memorial Shield Ian Hanrahan (photographed left with his little girl, Sienna) lost his life some 2 years ago in an unfortunate vehicle accident.

The son of popular local couple, Rosie and Gerard Hanrahan - Ian was a very much liked and respected member of the Molong and Grenfell communities.

Playing footy (Rugby League) with both the Molong Bulls and Grenfell Goannas at different times - as well as the Molong Magpies Rugby team - Ian was happy on the footy fields participating as a valued team member.

His other love was heading off with ‘the boys’ on hunting and fishing trips.

Ian’s great love came with the birth of his gorgeous little girl, Sienna who loved her dad dearly and the time they had together. Although their time as father and daughter was sadly cut short - Sienna remembers the love and happiness she found with her dad.

Ian is missed by team members of the many games he played throughout his life.

At last Sunday’s presentation at Grenfell - the Molong Bulls President, Jenny Barrow said “Today we had the priviledge of playing our First Grade game in loving memory of the late Ian Hanrahan.

Thank you to Rosie, Gerard, Sienna and the Hanrahan extended family for allowing this honour.

On this occasion the Molong Bulls were victorious - but full credit to Grenfell for hosting today and also for a very close and tough match, right down to the last quarter.

The game was a fitting tribute to a great young man, remembered lovingly by both clubs.”

Federal funding for Millthorpe to honour Australia's servicemen and women

To honour the local wartime history and service personnel of Millthorpe, two community groups in the village are undertaking commemorative projects thanks to federal government support.

The Australian Government’s Saluting Their Service Commemorative Grants Program funds projects which highlight the service and sacrifice of Australia's servicemen and women.

Member for Calare and Minister for Veterans’ Affairs and Defence Personnel Andrew Gee thanked the Millthorpe & District Historical Society and the Millthorpe Village Committee Inc for their dedication to preserve the memory of those from the area who have served.

Government backs local ideas from Calare to enhance inland rail

Three options to upgrade mechanical rail turnouts, reorganise local infrastructure and construct new passing loops in Calare are being investigated with support of the Australian Government’s Inland Rail Interface Improvement Program (II Program).

Proposals to progress under the second round of the II Program in Calare will investigate: · The impacts of constructing a greenfield line between Maryvale and Gulgong, including the construction of passing loops at Castlereagh Loop, Goolma Loop and Bodangora Loop, that could enhance the connection to Inland Rail. · The upgrade of mechanical turnouts with motorised turnouts and associated signalling infrastructure at key locations on the Country Regional Network. · Options to re-position or reorganise local infrastructure and supply chains in Central West NSW. The II Program is helping regions along the Inland Rail alignment to prepare for and maximise the benefits of operation.

With the first section of Inland Rail already operating between Parkes to Narromine and construction well underway north of Narrabri, communities and business are looking to gain access to Inland Rail’s fast and reliable freight transport.

Construction is already providing a significant jobs and economic boost to regional Australia, and now with the Interface Improvement Program we are helping local government, industry and regional communities to prepare for operation by investigating ways to enhance their connection to the Inland Rail spine.

There are 38 proposals from regional Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland working with technical specialists, funded through the II Program, helping people to develop business cases and undertake studies that test the merits and feasibility of their proposals.

Federal Member for Calare Andrew Gee said that Inland Rail was delivering for the Central West.

“This massive project will create jobs allowing businesses in the Central West to employ locals and stimulate the local economy,” Mr Gee said.

“The Government has committed $44 million to the II Program to assist in the development of project ideas which can boost the economic benefits that flow from Inland Rail.

“Our primary producers and businesses in the Central West will benefit from the construction of Inland Rail, making it easier to get our exports to market.”

“That’s why I’m proud to present the Millthorpe Village Committee Inc with $1535 to develop the Millthorpe Memorial Wall. The Committee will place a new plaque on the Millthorpe and District Roll of Honour listing the names of local service personnel presently omitted from the roll. They will also add an additional flagpole at the Memorial Wall.

“The Millthorpe & District Historical Society will receive $5099 to grow their collection of war memorabilia on display at the Golden Memories Millthorpe Museum.

The funds will help purchase a mannequin, Light Horse Trooper uniform and a replica gun that will help tell the stories of our veterans for generations to come,” said Minister Gee. In its 25th year, the Saluting Their Service Grant Program has supported thousands of projects and activities nationally. There are 2 categories of grants

available under the rolling grants program:

- Community Grants (STS-CG) - Grants to a maximum of $10,000 are available for local, community-based projects and activities.

- Major Grants (STS-MG) - Grants between $10,001 and $150,000 are available for major commemorative projects and activities that are significant from a national, state, territory and/or regional perspective.

Up to $3.5 million (GST exclusive) is available for the 2021-22 financial year.

New life for historic Molong Landmark “Molong Stores, Artisan Wares, Music Studio, Dance Studio, Creative Residencies, Live Showcases coming to 40 Bank Street

40 Bank St A brief history The building is one of the early (circa 1876) place-defining constructions of the Molong townscape and retains ongoing historical relevance as a living example of NSW country architecture and streetscape.

Built by William Tanner Jnr. (Molong’s first mayor) who conducted business there as a general store.i The store was sold to J. R. Clerke, who ran the business until a fire gutted the structure in 1891. Thereafter it was occupied in 1894 by John Neilson, a Scotsman, and became the home of his Glasgow Stores ii which remained active in Molong from the reconstruction until closure in 1918, two years before Neilson’s death at the age of 73.

Following the closure of the Glasgow Stores, it served various retail commercial purposes before it was acquired for use by the Molong Express in 1929.

The newspaper was founded by Henry Vale Leathem 1876, just three years before his untimely death at the age of 35. Thereafter the newspaper was operated by his widow Marion and subsequently his sons, who must have seen the transition into the building.

The paper was sold to Walter Pollard Stanger in 1933 and then to Norman Bloomfield in 1955, who ran the paper until his death in 2005.

The paper left the premises in 1979 coinciding with technological transitions in printing that rendered the printing press at 40 Bank street unviable.

In 1991 the building became the shop and café ‘Upstairs Downstairs’, operated by owners Peter and Janine Thomas, who in semi-retirement, transitioned (2006) it to a centre for furniture restoration and sales, as well as music (piano) lessons with a residence upstairs.

In 2016 the Current owners Lian Loke and Peter Manwaring began making plans for the development of a hybrid shop and arts facility called LongMo’s planned to open in 2022.

It was a lucky day for Molong when number 40 Bank Street caught the eye of Sydney couple, Pete Manwaring and Lian Loke (photographed left).

A few years back when the then owners of number 40 (Peter and Janine Thomas) met Pete and Lian and talked about the creative ideas the young couple planned for both the building and town - the Thomas’ realised they had found the right people to take over the building they had lovingly restored some years before.

Pete, Lian and their friends Robert Carroll, Maya, Jacomon and Kerry have now chosen Molong as their new home and love it here - likewise the people of Molong love these wonderful creatives living here with us. Already the safety fence is around the front of number 40 with tradesmen preparing the downstairs area to accommodate Robert Carroll’s new business ‘The Molong Stores’ (opening sometime in August) and the space planned for the inclusion of a music studio, dance studio as well as creative residences. Pete has a passion for establishing creative spaces and vibrant communities. The popular inner Sydney enterprise ‘The Bearded Tit’ a bar and creative space (voted ‘Time-Outs’ Best Neighbourhood Bar 2016) is an example

of Pete’s skills - and Medium Rare Gallery and creative space another example which operated between 2003 to 2013.

“My passion is to bring people together to help them bring out the best in their creative communities” said Pete who has 15 years experience in the production of large scale events at art and music festivals (Opera House, Peats Ridge Sustainable Art and Music Festival, The Great Escape and many more).

Associate Professor Lian Loke is an artist and Head of Design at the Architecture Faculty of The University of Sydney, with strong connections to the independent art and dance communities. She has curated events and exhibitions in galleries and festivals, showcasing the intersection of art, design and technology and creating opportunities for emerging artists.

She is a member of the Inner West Council’s Arts and Cultural Advisory Committee to help inform and advocate for greater art and creativity in the local precinct. Additionally, she has been performing for over 20 years locally and internationally, on stage and film.

“LongMo’s is a platform for supporting creatives from across Australia and contributing to the success of the local town. Based in and around an amazing property built in 1876 set in the heart of the picturesque Central West town of Molong. It is comprised of a diverse collection of not-for-profit activities and micro businesses, with a shared ethos of the value of art and creativity for community well-being.

Launching with a premium shop befitting arguably the best retail space in the main street, ‘Molong Stores’ reinstates the original name from 1877. Owned and operated by Robert Carroll who ran the world-famous Strand Hatters in Sydney for over 20 years. Molong Stores will showcase a range of artisan wares from creative makers and suppliers sourced locally and internationally.

In the medium term, a week or longer creative residency program for musicians and artists will provide much needed time and space for their creative process. A music studio space and production facility shall enable intensive songwriting and rehearsing, pre-production, demo recording, filming music videos, and even an occasional live showcase. A separate more flexible studio space shall enable creatives in dance, fine art, theatre and other artists to escape their daily distractions, connect to a different community and environment, and

focus intensively on making their works.

The unique environment of Molong and surrounding areas is inspirational material for many types of artists and musicians. Already we have informally hosted a sound artist-inresidence, who has produced a beautiful, mesmerising audiovisual meditation inspired by the surrounding landscape using the house piano in a deconstructed manner (originally from the local primary school).

Additionally, intensive workshops and school holiday programs for locals and visitors are planned to be run by experts in songwriting, dance, and other creative skills.

In the longer term the beautiful backyard and sculpture garden may house various creative events, including ‘alternative’ markets, live music showcases, an outdoor cinema and maybe even a wedding or two.

LongMo’s place-making aims to differentiate, create jobs and promote the town of Molong.

Bringing day visitors from across the Central West, tempting passing travellers to stop, and ensuring a constant stream of creatives and their supporters from around Australia stay and spend locally, and promote Molong widely.”

Calare farmers encouraged to apply for second round of emergency water infrastructure rebate scheme

Rock ‘n rollout of live music funding in Calare

The second round of the Emergency Water Infrastructure Scheme has opened to Calare farmers and local MPs are urging farmers to access these funds to improve their drought infrastructure.

Minister Pitt said the first round of the scheme had been hugely popular and provided droughtaffected primary producers and horticulture farmers the opportunity to get a rebate to buy and install on-farm water infrastructure to water livestock and permanent plantings.

“In Calare, rebates worth about $1 million, have been paid to 180 successful applicants through Round 1 – making sure farmers have real support to withstand current and future droughts,” Minister Pitt said.

“The Coalition Government is about delivering this sort of practical support so that farmers can get on and do what they do best – feed and clothe people in Australia and around the world.

“The Calare region is famous for its mixed farming, fruit, vineyards, meat and wool processing and this rebate scheme can deliver for those farmers when they’re impacted by drought.”

Member for Calare and Minister for Veterans’ Affairs and Defence Personnel Andrew Gee said the Coalition Government’s decision to extend the program until 30 June 2022 meant more of the region’s farmers could benefit.

“Our primary producers across Calare have done it tough, battling the big dry for more than three years, and then there were local bushfires, floods and mouse plagues. Throughout the devastation, farmers in our region showed incredible resilience – and continue to do so as they press on with drought recovery efforts,” Minister Gee said.

“This vital assistance to our farmers – to cover 25 per cent of the cost of new water infrastructure up to a maximum of $25,000 – helps producers get on with the job and prepare for future drought conditions.

“We know that dry times will come again, and I encourage all our farmers to start preparing now and to consider applying.”

Round 2 of the rebate scheme opened on 1 July 2021, with $30 million in eligible funding.

She and Andrews took different approaches: Andrews locking down immediately and Berejiklian starting with a soft lockdown that had to be toughened (then going further on shutting construction than Andrews ever has).

Even if the five-day Victorian lockdown has to be extended, the situation there appears more manageable than in NSW. On Sunday, Victoria reported 16 locally acquired new cases, while in NSW there were 105.

Berejiklian is under siege simultaneously for not acting fast and strongly enough, and for abandoning her basic less restrictive approach.

The concentration of the NSW infection in south west Sydney has also complicated the situation, because (as Victoria knows) a heavily multicultural area needs particularly good communications and sensitive handling.

Morrison and Coalition sink in Newspoll on the back of rollout shambles

This new COVID crisis has seen another round of inter-governmental bickering.

Victoria seethes with retrospective resentment about how Coalition figures (federal and NSW) blamed it last year over its second wave that resulted in hundreds of deaths, mostly aged care residents.

Melbourne then and Sydney currently both had their crises triggered by lapses in quarantine arrangements. NSW is in a much better position to cope than Victoria was – but now the virus is more virulent, and there’s little confidence the Sydney lockdown won’t extend into August.

Last week the Andrews government labelled Morrison the “prime minister of NSW”, declaring that state had been treated more generously than Victoria was in its earlier lockdown this year. Treasurer Josh Frydenberg accused Andrews of “whingeing”. Andrews had a dig at NSW. Andrews is always a tough operator – probably why he and Morrison have a grudging mutual respect. The Government is helping more musicians get back on stage, with two recipients in Calare sharing in more than $608,000, as part of round two of the Live Music Australia Program.

Minister for Communications, Urban Infrastructure, Cities and the Arts, the Hon Paul Fletcher MP, said the grants would provide critical support for the Australian live music industry.

“This program is assisting live music venues across the country to re-open and rebuild their capacity for programming activity once restrictions on public gatherings are lifted,” Minister Fletcher said.

“The Morrison Government is pleased to continue to support local venues to increase performance opportunities and showcase Australian talent,” Minister Fletcher said.

Federal Member for Calare and Minister for Veterans’ Affairs and Defence Personnel Andrew Gee said the funding will provide support for local musicians, and the live music scene, across the Central West.

“Calare is home to some incredible artists whose talent has been honed on live music stages in the Central West. Whether playing large ticketed venues or jamming at

federal financial help, even though, if the lockdown were only five days, they’d fall short of fully meeting the federal conditions. Morrison complied.

The latest lockdowns come as polling just released by the Australia Institute, a progressive think tank, shows people’s faith in state governments’ handling of COVID at an all-time high.

The Australia Institute has been regularly polling the question “which level of government do you think is doing a better job of handling the COVID-19 crisis?”. Respondents were asked to choose between their state or territory, the federal government, both equally, or say they didn’t know.

In August last year, 31% chose their state/ territory, 25% the federal government, and 32% rated the performances of both levels of government equally.

By April, 39% nominated their state or territory; 18% the federal government; 28% both.

Early this month (just as the NSW

lockdown was starting) 42% rated their state or territory as the government doing better, 16% the federal government, and 24% both equally.

In NSW in July, 39% said the state government was doing the better job, 13% nominated the federal government; and 28% put both equally. The Victorian figures were 34%, 25% and 21%.

The Australia Institute interprets the response to COVID representing “a potential realignment of state-federal relations”.

Certainly the second year of the pandemic, like the first, is seeing the states showing little deference to the federal government when they perceive their core interests are at stake. They determine the lockdowns and, now JobKeeper has gone, NSW and Victoria have shown they are willing to play hardball to extract the best financial support for their citizens.

Bulls over Grenfell prior to Manildra clash this Sunday

by Jack Mann It will be a BIG day of footy this coming Sunday (25 July) at the Molong Rec. when the Molong Bulls Football Club hold their 2021 Sponsor Appreciation Day - and Local Derby against the Manildra Rhinos.

10 a.m. Youth League Cargo vs Grenfell; Molong vs Manildra 11.20 a.m. Youth League 12.40 Ladies League Tag 2.00 p.m. First Grade Goanna’s hosted a revamped Bulls outfit with the Bulls getting back to a more stable outfit with injured players starting to return. The injured players, still to come back are Coach Tod Barrow (hamstring), Oatesy (a bad ankle sprain).

I could not make the game but by gathering information from others - it (the game) went something like this.

Both sides running and hitting hard from the start.

Memberships are due by 31 of July.

Gersbach, Maguire, Gallagher, Packham combining better every match played in defence and attack. Our backs Molong Golf were numbering up in defence also. Half time score showed this with the scoreline locked at 12-10 Bulls. Second half opened up again with is ranked the second hardest hole Ladies both sides showing plenty of spark. Paul Glynn (Molong & surrounding districts) – 0428 168 638 CTLX CATTLE 20 July It was a quality yarding with a good selection of young cattle to suit the feeders along with odd pens to suit the processors. There were limited grown steers and heifers available and 140 mostly prime heavy weight cows yarded. There were very limited numbers of young cattle suitable for the restockers. Most of the usual buyers were operating except for a major feeder operator.

Young cattle to the trade were 8c dearer with steer vealers selling to 548c while the heifer vealers sold to 534c/kg. Prime yearling steers sold from 410c to 480c while the heifer portion sold from 464c to 515c/kg. Feeder steers were 10c/kg cheaper while the feeder heifers were around firm. Feeder steers sold from 443c to 560c while the feeder heifers sold from 414c to 532c/kg. Young restocker cattle remain strong with young steers selling from 533c to 601c/kg.

Grown steers and heifers were 8c dearer with prime grown steers selling from 406c to 450c while the prime grown heifers sold from 405c to

439c/kg. Cows were 20c dearer with the score 2 and 3 cows selling from 230c to 342c/ kg. Prime heavy weight cows sold from 355c to 387c to average 378c/kg. Heavy bulls were cheaper on quality selling to 290c/kg.

CTLX SHEEP 14 JULY An increased offering of 10,560 lambs and 1,260 grown sheep produced a very good penning of heavy lambs as well as a good presentation of trade types. Conversely, there was also a number of plainer conditioned lambs throughout the offering. The grown sheep penning was mixed again with a selection of the plainer types on offer. The regular buying panel attended and operated in a dearer market.

There was no change through the limited offering of new season lambs. Very light trades saw a slight negative change, quality affected.

Light trades sold firm to slightly dearer trends, while trade lambs sold $6 to $13/head dearer overall. The heavier trade drafts also sold better, up to $9 and heavy lambs averaged up $7/ head. Extra heavy lambs trended firm, selling dearer at the top end to reach $275/head. Ram lambs saw little change, while heavier drafts of hoggets sold to a dearer trend of $19/head.

Medium weight ewes were firm to cheaper for both for Merinos and crossbreds. Heavy crossbred ewes saw a slight rise, up $7/head.

Heavy rams also sold to dearer trends.
