The Australian Government will pour just over one million dollars into Molong’s Bank and Gidley Streets through Round 5 of the Building Better Regions Fund (BBRF).

Thanks to $1,090,425 in funding, street trees will be planted on the centre line of road and in complimentary locations, with solar-powered fairy lights to line the main street.

Existing planters and benches will be removed to make way for new seating, and ageing garbage bins will be replaced.

Cabonne Council will oversee the rejuvenation project which aims to enhance the rich heritage of the township of Molong, improve accessibility on the main street, and create more opportunities for local businesses.

Federal Member for Calare and Minister for Veterans’ Affairs and Defence Personnel, Andrew Gee, said the project will build on the character of Molong’s town centre.

“It doesn’t take much imagination to picture Molong’s Bank street back in the 1850’s, when many of the heritage buildings were constructed,” said Minister Gee. “Bursting with charm, Bank Street is a source of pride for locals, and attracts (in Covid-friendlier times) many tourists keen to visit the town and drop-by the many small businesses and cafes which have set up shop.

“That’s why I’m pleased to announce $1,090,425 in funding to further the picture-postcard appeal of the main street.

“While the planting of trees will enhance the streetscape, and help to keep the area cool in the warmer months, the fairy lights will brighten up the evenings, improving safety on the street.

“This project will help drive COVID-19 recovery by encouraging people considering a move to the country to put the town on their list, and by making Molong even more inviting to tourists road tripping around the Central West,” said Mr Gee.

Following community consultation sessions held in 2020, Urban Design experts Sala4D and King+Campbell displayed their findings and suggestions for a revitalised town centre.

This followed the Molong and Canowindra communities being invited to explore and shape ideas regarding ways to create more attractive and stylish town centres.

The key messages to come out of the consultations for Molong were that the community impression of the town centre is tired and in need of modernisation.

Proposals for Molong's Bank Street include: • Creating a median which separates traffic and allows pedestrians to cross and seek safe relief in the centre • Rids the street of the dreaded double white lines.

• Replaces the current Liquidamba trees at the edges with potted suitable varieties.

• Provides modern and stylish seating and street furniture.

• Proposes a "safe crossing point" halfway up the street.

• Seeks to connect Bank Street to the pool via the laneway to a carpark and the old gasworks site.

Ego is nothing new ... speeding around towns and on country roads is nothing new.

The message from your community is - “what you are doing with your speed, donuts in the rain, whirlies, whatever ... has been done by generations before you. Bringing attention to self via utes, work utes, noisy cars, 4WD’s, flash cars, old cars vehicles, motorbikes, motorcycles has happened throughout time in Molong.

Generations have gone through the same stage of age, ego and growth. Nothing like ego and attention seeking when young. Well, some ‘kids’ never grow up and drive the same as youth!”

But when one gets older - frailer - slower we don’t have the fast reaction we used to have when your age. Your life - our safety is at risk.

So are the lives of little kids, toddlers who might just happen to suddenly appear in front of you.

Not forgetting loved dogs, cats, birds.

Whilst you practice your ego around town whether in a car, work ute, motorcycle, or as a kid zooming along the sidewalks past shop doors on bikes, scooters etc ... your choices are actually placing your community at RISK OF SERIOUS INJURY ... EVEN DEATH. Question: Can your ego cope with this outcome?

It’s thumbs down to attention seeking fast, noisy drivers/motorcycle/motorbike riders in and around Molong and Cabonne towns and villages.

NOTE: Not only youth and youg adults and kids are a problem. Some ‘KIDS’ never grow up.

Just when the second planting of 120 coastal rosemary (Westringia Mundi) plants were settling into the soil of Fairbridge Children’s Park - they disappeared again last week.

The delightful park, a Memorial to the children who lived at Fairbridge Farm and to the 100 who later in life served in one of the wars to protect Australia - is located on the highway between Molong and Orange.

Professionally designed and built, the park, located beside the Molong Creek - was officially opened last year.

Recently (on the same day the plants were stolen) - the park won the 2021 National Landscape Architecture Award.

David Hill said “it is like stealing flowers from a grave” and suggested that it looked like it may be a commercial operator involved to have taken so many plants.

New roof for old Post Office

The scaffolding goes up again in Bank Street.

This time on Michael and Kathryn’s Frew’s Post Office building.

“We’re replacing the entire slate roof” said Michael who with Kathryn are keen to retain the historical features of this important Molong icon.

“It’s taken us a good twelve months to find a

slate tiler who can do the job” said Michael who with Kathryn will be keeping a close eye on the project in order to retain the heritage features of the building.

Workers wanted for local council elections

The NSW Electoral Commission is recruiting more than 30,000 people across NSW to deliver Local Government elections in December, with thousands of jobs still available across the state.

While more than 20,000 people have expressed their interest so far, Wayne Morgan, Director of Election Support Services, says more applicants are needed than ever before.

“We’re hiring additional staff in line with our COVID-19 Safety Plan . Extra staff will support people in checking-in and out of polling places, maintaining physical distancing and additional cleaning measures,” Mr Morgan said.

“There are a range of opportunities available across the state. If you’re enthusiastic about working with your community, it’s an excellent way to earn some extra money and learn new skills.

“There are jobs available just on election day, of course, but there’s also a range of positions to be filled over the next 10 weeks. Pay rates are very competitive and we provide training to staff who’ll join a huge team working together to deliver the election.

“To keep our staff and voters safe, we will also be working in line with COVID-19 safety guidance and any public health orders,” he said.

A small step for everyone else is a big leap for the Nationals The Nationals appear to be inching towards accepting the net zero 2050 climate target, wrapped in a protective layer of cotton wool and of course accompanied by expensive sweeteners.

After all they’ve said over the years, the step is a huge one for them. But apart from the symbolism, for everyone else it’s a very small one, moving from the government’s present policy of reaching net zero “preferably” by 2050.

Scott Morrison, addressing the Liberal parliamentary party on Monday, spelled out what he intends to take to Glasgow and what he has no intention of taking.

He’s determined to present a firm 2050 commitment. He knows that if he doesn’t, Australia will be a pariah.

He’s now far enough down the 2050 target road that he can’t afford not to get his way, even if he has to add some strong-arming to the largesse on the table for the Nationals.

In his speech to the Liberals he indicated the policy decision was one for cabinet, not the party rooms (though the Nationals would contest that, and Barnaby Joyce has flagged he needs the consent of a majority of his colleagues, accepting he won’t get them all).

In question time later, Morrison reiterated who’s in charge. “The government decision on the government’s commitments for Australia in relation to Cop26 will be made by the government in cabinet.”

In urging his position in the Liberal party meeting, Morrison said that on the climate issue the world had moved on, highlighting the change in the United States. take He referenced Australia’s place in the western alliance and warned that if it decided to be out of lockstep with its friends it would draw down very seriously on the capital it had built up over decades.

Morrison also made clear the government won’t lift Australia’s 2030 target of a 26-28% reduction in emissions on 2005 levels.

This leaves the Coalition agonising over 2050 when the focus of other countries is on 2030. It would be easier to understand if the agonising were over a new 2030 target.

Morrison says the current 2030 target was an election

commitment – that gives him a rationale for sticking with it. Regardless, the Nationals, who are having enough trouble worrying about nearly three decades away, would never buy pledging more by 2030. So their party room was not even asked to consider it.

Instead, Morrison will be armed with “projections” of what emissions reductions Australia expects to reach. The numbers aren’t yet known but it is speculated emissions could decrease by 32-36% by 2030.

The matters to be resolved to get the Nationals in the 2050 tent are said to be about money, messaging, the protections for the regions, and the practicalities of the government’s plan. The timeline is unclear.

Nationals deputy leader David Littleproud on Monday was sounding encouraging. “We’re working through this issue pragmatically, understanding what the prime minister is trying to achieve.

"There could be winners and losers in this, but we’ve got to understand where they are and who they are and how do we address that. But if you’re a coal miner in central Queensland, you shouldn’t be shuddering in your boots today. Coal mining will continue for well beyond 2040.”

What was needed, Littleproud said, was “a calm environment” for consideration of the climate plan.

“There’s a lot of religion in this. But the religious zealots from both sides need to bugger off and let the adults in the room work through the issues.”

He’s right of course, although the observation is more than a bit rich when Nationals’ “zealotry” has held back

progress on the climate issue for more than a decade.

As he nails down his own policy, Morrison is already ramping up his attacks against Labor’s yet-to-be released one.

He declares the opposition has “no plan” and offers a “blank cheque” (as distinct, presumably, from the government’s very large cheque now being written for the regions).

And, “every time you hear Labor talking about cutting emissions, they are putting up your taxes”. No mention of the fact “your taxes” would be paying quite a lot for the government’s policy too. (theconversation.com.au)

A conversation with Megan Peffer The Molong Branch of the Country Women’s Association has been part of the Molong community since 1926.

We talked to Megan Peffer, current President, to find out why local Women of all ages and interests will find the CWA a great experience.

Molong’s historic Telegraph Hotel recently completed an extensive refurbishment adding a brand new dining area, extension to the bar area and creation of a new outside courtyard/beer garden where the old drivethrough used to be.

Quite a modern makeover adding to the growing list of attractive venues for locals and visitors - who seem to be coming in increasing numbers given the great choice to be found here.

Question: Let’s start at the very beginning, Can you tell the readers about CWA? Answer: CWA stands for Country Women’s Association. The association was formed in 1922 when country women saw that there was a need to improve the conditions of women and children on the land. Members set up baby health care centres, funded bush nurses, built and staffed maternity ward and hospitals, schools and rest homes…and so much more. CWA is the largest women’s organisation in Australia aiming to improve conditions for country women, their families and communities.

Question: Why did you join CWA? Answer: I wanted to join a local community group. I think being part of a community group is really important in country areas, because they can become your support and network in your life.

I found out that Molong has a CWA Branch and joined. I soon discovered that is so much more to CWA then baking cakes.

I have met some wonderful local ladies and have had some fun times together. I also have met ladies from all over NSW and have learnt some amazing facts about Australia and the world.

Q: You said that CWA is more than baking cakes, what do you mean?

A: Well I had this image in my mind that CWA was a group of ladies baking cakes and drinking tea….but that is just not true. CWA has many levels from local branches supporting their community right up to State Level where NSW CWA is the voice in government and media for all members from the local branches.

Q: What do you love about CWA? A: I love that CWA is for any woman who wants to be in a community group, who wants to support their community in different ways.

A: The members of Molong branch would love to see the branch continue for generations to come after all it has been part of the community for over 90 years. Stamps honour RSPCA

Australia Post has issued a variety of lovely stamps to honour the RSPCA in australia.

Australia’s first Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was formed following a public meeting, on 4 July 1871, at the Mechanics’ Institute, Melbourne, to discuss the ill treatment of working horses in Victoria and the need for a society to prevent animal cruelty.

Following its establishment in Victoria, other Australian colonies quickly followed suit with their own societies, with the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) and Northern Territory forming theirs in the mid-20th century. A royal warrant was received in 1923, when the various societies became known as the Royal Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA).

In 1980, it was agreed that the RSPCA had to become a national

organisation, to speak with one voice on policy matters and to offer advice to the federal government on national animal welfare issues.

The new organisation was named RSPCA Australia.

While the national organisation was technically formed in 1980, this stamp issue commemorates the founding of the movement for the prevention of cruelty to animals, recognising 150 years of caring for and protecting animals in Australia. The stamps represent five key aspects of the RSPCA’s mission and practice: research, shelter, protection, certification and advocacy. Together, the five stamp designs indicate the breadth of the RSPCA’s work across the domains of companion animals, livestock, animals in sport, recreation and industry, and wildlife.

Shelter Every year, unwanted and neglected pets enter the care of the RSPCA’s state- and territory-based member societies, as do injured wild animals. Some animals are reclaimed and, sadly, some euthanised, although a great number are also sheltered and rehabilitated before being rehomed with new carers through fostering and adoption programs. While neglect numbers are thankfully trending downwards, an essential part of this care work is to educate individuals on responsible pet ownership and to promote the principles of good pet care, fundamental strategies that support this downward trend.

Protection

Perhaps the most high-profile aspect of the RSPCA’s mission is protection of animals through the inspectorate arm of each member society, which enforces state and territory legislation against animal cruelty. Depending on the state or territory, inspectors have the power to enter property to investigate claims of cruelty (physical and psychological violence, neglect and lack of welfare), to seize evidence of cruelty, including the animals, to issue directions/notices and on-the-spot fines, and to initiate prosecutions against perpetrators of cruelty.

The majority of cases are addressed through less punitive measures, with education and advice being the preferred tools for resolving allegations and fostering a culture of responsible animal ownership.

“We’ve been to big school today” said both Josephine (left) and Jazma (right). Excited to come across each other again in Lime & Stone in Bank Street the two girls were happy to share their excitement. “I counted fishies” said Jazma “And played in the playground”. Josephine said she was “happy to draw and play with the other kids. Both said they were looking forward to going back to big school again. Well done to the Molong Central School, the new starters for 2022 - and their mums who will be seeing their youngest children head to school.

RESTRICTIONS EASING AS VACCINATION RATES CONTINUE TO IMPROVE It is fantastic that all of NSW is now experiencing eased COVID-19 restrictions!

I’d like to thank every member of our community for doing the right thing to help get us to this point: following health orders, getting tested, wearing masks and rolling up our sleeves for vaccination.

Our electorate has some of the highest vaccination rates in the country, which is incredible, and in large part due to the hugely successful ADF vaccination clinics that have been held recently in more than 33 regional NSW locations.

I popped into the first Molong ADF vaccination clinic (pictured) and was so impressed by the professionalism and dedication shown by our ADF personnel, our healthcare workers and the clinic volunteers. I thanked them for their wonderful work. It’s invaluable.

Now that we have a little more freedom, please support local where you can and enjoy catching up with family and friends in a safe way.

LAUGHING ALL THE WAY TO THE BANK STREET! Last week I was pleased to visit Molong to announce that the Australian Government will pour more than one million dollars into Molong’s Bank and Gidley Streets through Round 5 of the Building Better Regions Fund (BBRF).

Thanks to $1,090,425 in funding, street trees will be planted in the centreline of the roads, and in complementary locations, and solar-powered fairy lights will be installed too. Canowindra has also received $1,059,250 for improvements to it's CBD streetscapes.

This $2.1 million investment in the Canowindra and Molong CBD upgrades will help drive tourism in our region and also the recovery from the drought and COVID-19.

$25 MILLION - THE AG SHOWS MUST GO ON!

Country Shows and Field Days are a vital part of our community, and a trip to the Molong Show is always a wonderful day out!

That is why I am thrilled to announce that Round 2 of the Supporting Agricultural Shows and Field Days Program will open soon and the Supporting Showmen and Women Program will be extended for an additional year! This brings the Australian Government's total support of Agricultural Shows and Field Days through these programs to almost $83 million.

NET ZERO UPDATE The Australian Government will settle its position on net zero in the next couple of weeks. I believe the National Party and the Government need to be constructively and positively engaged on the issue and approach the discussion in good faith to see where we can land. Sticking your fingers in your ears and refusing to have the conversation is not the way to go.

In doing that we need to make sure that jobs in country Australia are protected and that country people aren’t being dudded and carrying the can for city people.

I think there are opportunities here for country Australia that we should have a good look at, and I like the idea of technology getting us there rather than taxes.

Let’s be open to the conversation and see if we can find solutions that work for our country communities and the environment, so that we hand down the best possible Australia to our children and grandchildren.

It’s Vegie Planting Time

A weekly column by Sue and Rozzi

Healthy, delicious and fun! That’s how we describe this time of the year when we shake off the winter ‘blues’ and start planting seeds and seedlings in our gardens, pots, or on makeshift anything - old wheelbarrows, buckets, old chookyards or sheep pens.

Growing happy vegies is not hard - and perfecto vegie gardens are fantastic ... but if you don’t have one it’s easy to improvise. Vegies are so happy - they will grow anywhere.

Planting them - watching them grow, picking them, cooking them or eating raw gives one so much pleasure.

You don’t like vegies? My kids won’t eat vegies? Well, get the kids to plant with you, water, grow their own ... watch the vegies grow, pick them and cook them into exciting recipes. Or better still, eat raw. Watch them change their minds.

Grow ‘dem’ beans!

Never grown or eaten broad beans? How much longer do you want to wait before arousing your tastebuds to the heights of life?

Easy to grow - delicious to eat ... the humble broad bean grows (large) with a velvety texture inside the skin that protects the good source of protein and carbs inside. I love eating broadies straight off the vine - no cooking.

Although cooked with asparagus, chives, rocket and wasabi leaves - covered in real butter when served, with a dash of salt and pepper - comes with a mesmerising thought ..’YUM have I arrived in heaven!’

Companion Planting: Broadies are good companions and love the company of carrots, lettuce, marigolds, celery, peas, potaties parsnip, cabbage, parsley, eggplant. Each protects each other from annoying bugs.

Best not to grow near beetroot, onions and garlic, kohl-rabi sunflowers and Jerusalem Artichokes. They don’t like each other very much.

This week’s gardening tips I learn so much from local people about what grows well, locally ... and plenty of ideas, tried and tested (often passed from generation to generation) of plant survival.

For example, long-time resident, Lynn Townsend lives by the Molong Creek. She has her tomato plants in - and is not phased by the huge frosts over her side of town Lyn’s Tip: “I plant the seedlings - then take a 2-3 litre plastic milk or juice bottles. Cut off the bottom of the bottle and simply place over the plant. Leave the lid on except when watering.

“My tomatoes are looking good and growing” said a proud Lyn. Give it a try?

Snails and Slugs: Pests? No, they have an important purpose in your garden by providing food for all sorts of mammals, birds, slow worms, earthworms, insects. These little critters are an important part of your garden’s natural balance. Upset that balance by removing them, permanently, and we can do a lot of harm.

However, with the recent rains - these little critters are also growing in numbers in some gardens - and munching their way through vegie seedlings and flower seedlings.

Simple remedy? Pick them up and move them to another part of your garden or better still, your compost area.

Remember snail pace - it will take them a long time to find their way back!

‘A heavenly dish’ ...fresh broad beans, asparagus, chives, wasabi and rocket leaves - served with butter and a dash of pepper and salt. A stunning healthy dish - best served simple and light so that the full flavours of ‘fresh’ can be enjoyed. Goes well with pan fried salmon or white fish ...or chicken ... and a bottle of chilled white wine (not sweet in flavour).

Companion Planting: Snails and Slugs will keep away from any of these plants Ferns, Hydrangeas, Euphorbias, Lavender, Rosemary Geraniums, Japanese Anemone.

Plant these around your vegie and pretty gardens to encourage these little munchers to choose their food elsewhere.

Protecting Pets, Birds, Animals: The team at H Hardware in Bank Street have a product that deters snails & slugs and will not affect dogs, cats, birds, fauna and earth worms in your garden. “As high as an elephant’s eye”

We oldies remember the days of the Molong Picture Theatre and the musicals like Oklahama when Gordon MacRae sang about corn growing in the paddocks that was “as high as an elephant’s eyes.

Well, I have never grown corn this high ... but in Aussie land and this area - corn is a treat of summer that starts from a seed or seedling growing and then seemingly finding its way to be the highest vegie growing point in the garden. Any garden! Brilliant!

Like most vegies, I don’t bother to cook corn - I love the sweet raw taste as my teeth glide up and down the golden cob. Delicious!

Nutritional value: In one ear of sweet corn, you get these nutrients per serving: Calories: 90. Protein: 3 grams (g) Fat: 1 g.

Corn is nutritious, providing fiber, which aids in digestion, plus folate, thiamin, phosphorus, vitamin C, and magnesium (about 10% of the daily value for each).

Companion Planting: Corn loves to gow with beans, cucumber, peas, potatoes, pumpkin, squash, melons, parsnip, zucchini

Why are the cobs called ‘ears’?

“Ear” comes from the ancient word “ahs,” which meant “husk of corn.”

“Aunt Karen drank the whiskey on the way down to prepare herself. Then she landed right in the middle of a hundred enemy soldiers. She killed seventy of them with the machine gun until she ran out of bullets. Then she killed twenty more with the machete till the blade broke. And then she killed the last ten with her bare hands.” “Good heavens,” said the horrified teacher, “What did your father say was the moral of that frightening Story?”

The child said: “Stay away from Aunt Karen when she’s been drinking.”

A doctor made it his regular habit to stop off at a bar for a hazelnut daiquiri on his way home. The bartender knew of his habit, and would always have the drink waiting at precisely 5:03 p.m.

One afternoon, as the end of the work day approached, the bartender was dismayed to find that he was out of hazelnut extract. Thinking quickly, he threw together a daiquiri made with hickory nuts and set it on the bar. Our Business Manager oversees daily operations, WHS and salaries.

Role criteria 1.

Demonstrated high-level ability to oversee, coordinate and maintain school financial systems, including providing accurate advice and reports for the principal and school staff, and managing the annual budget.

Experience in supporting the management of the school’s procurement of goods and services in accordance with the Department’s procurement policy and procedures to optimise school resources.

3. Proven capacity to mentor, supervise and work with the school administrative team to effectively manage business functions including the development of efficient systems and processes.

4. Capacity to or experience in managing Work, Health and Safety (WHS), including the risk assessment and management processes.

Paul Glynn (Molong & surrounding districts) – 0428 168 638 CTLX CATTLE Tues 19 October It was a good quality yarding with a fair selection of young cattle to suit the feeders and trade buyers along with some outstanding grown steers and heifers in prime condition.

There were 170 cows yarded which were mostly prime heavy weights, and there were odd pens of weaners to suit the restockers. Most of the usual buyers were in attendance and operating.

Young cattle to the trade were firm to 4c dearer with prime vealers selling to 589c/kg.

Prime steer yearlings sold from 490c to 540c, while the prime heifer yearlings sold from 465c to 559c/kg. Feeder steers and heifers were 5c dearer with the feeder steers selling from 470c to 585c/kg. Feeder heifers sold from 470c to 572c/kg. Young cattle to the restockers remain strong with the young steers selling from 638c to 766c, while the young heifers going back to the paddock sold from 600c to 668c/kg.

Grown steers were up to 10c dearer, while the grown heifers were 5c/kg dearer. The prime grown steers sold from 420c to 520c, while the grown heifers sold from 415c to 490c/kg. Cows were 5c cheaper with the 2 and 3 scores selling

from 283c to 385c/kg. Prime heavy weight cows sold from 390c to 413c to average 404c/kg.

Heavy bulls sold to 347c/kg.

CTLX SHEEP 13 October Lambs remain hard to find at Carcoar with a very small yarding. It was a pretty good quality yarding with some pens of well finished trade weight new season lambs along with a few pens of heavier weights and lighter weights to suit the restockers. Old crossbred lambs were in limited supply and there were a few pens of trade weight Merino lambs yarded. Not all the usual buyers attended due to the small number available.

Trade weight new season lambs were $4 to $9 cheaper selling from $166 to $238/head to average between 885c and 940c/kg cwt.

Trade weight old lambs were $6 to $9 cheaper selling from $153 to $232/head. Heavy lambs were $6 cheaper with new season lambs over 24kg selling from $243 to $256 while a couple of heavy weight old lambs sold to $290/ head. Merino lambs were close to firm with trade weights selling from $144 to $207/head.

Restocker lambs were $3 cheaper with the young lambs selling from $124 to $192/head.

Hoggets sold to $210/head.

Most grades were represented in a mixed yarding of mutton where all grades were $25 to $35/head cheaper. Merino ewes to the processors sold from $50 to $177 while crossbred ewes sold from $40 to $208/head.

The restockers paid from $50 to $170 for Merino ewes and from $97 to $194/head for crossbred ewes.

Sunday Golf Sunday saw fourteen players playing golf at Royal Molong and four players travelling to Manildra for the Manildra Closing Day tournament. At Molong there was an eighteen hole two person ambrose played with the winners being Stubba and Quinney and Troy and Kyle as runners up.

Thanks to Al for running the event in Bro’s absence.

Bro, Beau, Jye and the Ghost Walker travelled to Manildra for an eighteen hole individual stableford tournament where the Ghost Walker blitzed the field with forty points to win the event. Thanks to Manildra golf club for a great day.

The Manildra Golf Club are also holding their Manildra Open Tournament on Sunday November 14th with a 10am tee off for those who are interested in playing this event.

Have you noticed that when you’re around age twenty five you might be playing some type of football, soccer or basketball. When you’re around forty years old you might be playing tennis. At sixty years of age you may be playing golf. Have you noticed the older you get the balls get smaller.

And then at sixty and older on some days you amaze yourself while on other days you look for your mobile phone whilst talking on it. You may also spend fifteen minutes searching for your phone in the car while using the phone as a flashlight. But then again one day you’re young and fun and next thing you’re turning down the car stereo to see better.
