When going to print - the Express was waiting on information to come from NSW Health about other areas still in lockdown who are usually keen visitors to Molong and Cabonne Country towns and villages, (namely, Bathurst, Dubbo, Wellington, Hunter Valley, those travelling on the Mitchell Highway from Brisbane and

North Coast, South Coast to North Coast, and of course Sydney, Blue Mountains and Canberra). We hope to see their return - soon.

Last weekend there was a noticeable feel of Spring ... and new beginnings in Molong as residents came back to Bank Street and Gidley Street to greet and meet ... and spend time back in their friendly, sunny community "meeting place".

Dr Williams lauded

Molong’s Dr Robin Williams was praised last week by Western NSW Local Health District chief, Scott McLachlan, for his efforts during the COVID pandemic.

"There's a fantastic general practice in town and a pharmacy that have been doing a lot of vaccinating," Mr McLachlan said.

“I take my hat off to Dr Robin Williams and all of his team in the general practice that for nearly six months now have been vaccinating a lot of people in the community.”

Statistics published last week showed that 89.6 per cent of 10,765 residents aged 15 and older in Cabonne had received at least one vaccine dose and 67.4 had received both.

Dr Williams was one of the driving forces behind the construction of Molong’s award-winning Waluwin Community Health Centre and the redevelopment of Molong Hospital.

He was named the Molong’s Citizen of the Year in 2019.

Dr Robin Williams is a General Practitioner passionate about rural medicine and encouraging new doctors to practice in country towns.

He was a member of the community working party which worked with Cabonne Council to build the Waluwin Health One Centre, which became one of Australia’s first, fully integrated primary health and community care facilities when it opened in 2010.

Parkes Elvis Festival to be bigger and better

Parkes will again be centre stage when more visitors, Elvis impersonators and music fans flock to enjoy five action-packed days of music, vintage cars, movies, and live performances in April, thanks to $160,000 in funding from the NSW Government.

Parliamentary Secretary to the Deputy Premier Sam Farraway MLC said the NSW Regional Events Acceleration Fund will help next year’s Parkes Elvis Festival deliver a bigger program of events, inspired by the 1968 movie classic Speedway.

“The multi-award-winning Parkes Elvis Festival will run from 20-24 April 2022, attracting huge crowds of locals and visitors wanting to celebrate Elvis’ 87th birthday across five fabulous funfilled days,” Mr Farraway said.

“The Parkes Elvis Festival is considered one of Australia’s most iconic events and with a global media reach of more than 400 million people, this all helps to put a big spotlight on the region and bring welcome tourism dollars to local businesses.

Government’s leadership group to consider climate policy this week, with high stakes for Morrison and Joyce The government’s leadership group is due to consider plans for a revised climate policy this week, as Scott Morrison goes all out to land a deal the Nationals will accept.

The stakes are very high for both Morrison and Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce.

Morrison needs to be able to commit to net zero emissions by 2050 and to improve the government’s medium term ambition, if he is to keep faith with the expectations of Australia’s allies, the United States and Britain.

Joyce has to get a package that is sufficiently acceptable to a majority of the Nationals so that his party room doesn’t feel their restored leader has sold them out.

Morrison and Joyce have been in discussions for some time but with the Glasgow climate conference looming early next month, reaching finality is now becoming urgent.

The leadership group includes, besides the PM and Joyce, treasurer Josh Frydenberg, finance minister Simon Birmingham, attorney-general Michaelia Cash, defence minister Peter Dutton, deputy Nationals leader and agriculture minister David Littleproud, Nationals Senate leader and regionalisation minister Bridget McKenzie, and health minister Greg Hunt.

After the leadership group considers it, the policy will go to the wider cabinet.

The Nationals will meet Monday virtually, but will not have a substantive policy to discuss. They have indicated they want to consider the plan in a face-to-face meeting.

The first opportunity for that is when parliament meets next week. The policy would also go to the joint parties room.

Morrison will announce the policy before the Glasgow meeting.

Assuming he lands a satisfactory deal, he is still unclear about whether he will go to Glasgow, and has not sounded enthusiastic. He has pointed to onerous quarantine requirements as a disincentive but the new NSW treasurer Matt Kean indicated to Sky NSW would smooth that problem if need be.

There are other disincentives to the PM’s trip, which would also include the G20 meeting. One is his need to concentrate on domestic politics in the final part of the year.

Another is the prospect of awkward moments on the

trip. French president Emmanuel Macron will be at the G20, and it is not certain how an encounter would go, given the tension between the two countries over the cancelled submarines contract. Former PM Malcolm Turnbull will be at Glasgow, which could make for another difficult encounter.

On the other hand, the Glasgow conference is a major international occasion and Morrison would be criticised for not attending.

The Business Council of Australia bought into the climate debate at the weekend, backing net zero for 2050 and a big lift in the 2030 target – to a 46-50% economywide range against 2005 levels. The present target is for a reduction of 26-28%.

However the BCA – which represents Australia’s largest companies – immediately came in for some flak.

Some critics homed in on its change of position, because it had derided Labor’s proposal for a 45% reduction target before the last election. The BCA said this would be economy wrecking.

Energy minister Angus Taylor was somewhat dismissive of the BCA report saying it made “a number of recommendations that have concerning impacts for households and businesses”.

For instance, “the BCA’s recommendation to expand the Safeguard Mechanism and bring down baselines would force companies to reduce their emissions, regardless of whether economically viable technologies are available, risking competitiveness and jobs – this is a carbon tax”.

Joyce, speaking to the Western Australian Nationals conference, said: “BCA and those

who you represent — you are now on the hook for what you state, the cost is now yours. " F u t u r e governments will say that you asked for this, and if it’s a flop, if it’s a disaster, as the energy crisis now is in the UK, Europe and China, you have to pay to fix it.”

Emerging from quarantine at The Lodge, Morrison on Monday declared that as PM it was his job “to bring people together” on dealing with the challenge of climate change.

“The world is moving into a new Mick Tsikas/AAP energy economy. We all know that. It is now a question of how not if, and how is how we can ensure that those communities right across rural and regional Australia can look at this change and understand that there are big opportunities and there is a way through,” Morrison said.

“My government is committed to ensuring that rural and regional Australia transitions to this new energy economy in the future stronger, with their jobs and their communities intact,” he said.

“We’ve got to come together on this issue. My government will come together on this issue. The country will come together on this issue.” (theconversation.com.au)

NSW electricity and gas customers can save by switching energy plans - IPART

The NSW Independant Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) has released its draft report finding that customers that remain on ‘standing’ offers are paying too much when they stay with their retailers’ standard offer.

“A typical customer could save more than $300 a year for electricity and $350 for gas by moving from their retailers’ standing offer to a better plan,” said IPART Tribunal member Ms Sandra Gamble.

“Customers should compare offers on the government run EnergyMadeEasy website to get a better deal.”

IPART’s draft report on the performance and competitiveness of the retail energy market in NSW in 2020-21 found that COVID-19 lockdown restrictions have meant that residential customers staying at home are using more energy so bills have increased. However, it also found that the underlying retail electricity prices have fallen to their lowest levels since 2015-16.

The latest price reductions have been brought about by falling wholesale prices with the influx of rooftop solar systems.

“Over the past few years, solar has benefitted all customers by bringing down prices in the market,” Ms Gamble said.

“Solar is also driving innovation in the market.

In the same way that data and smart phones has

changed how telecommunications services are offered to customers, retailers are providing new bundling and pricing structures for solar and batteries as the costs of these technologies fall” Ms Gamble said.

These new opportunities are leading to increased entry in the market.Sixteen new retailers entered the electricity retail market over the last 2 years, bringing the total number of retailers to 40.

Ms Gamble said that as competition increases, products and services should continue to improve to deliver better outcomes for consumers.

In 2020-21, energy consumers reported increased levels of satisfaction and the number of complaints to the Energy Ombudsman has fallen.

IPART is taking submissions on its draft report until 5 November 2021. IPART will provide a final report to the NSW Minister for Energy and Environment by 30 November 2021.

Rotary Club back in business

Molong’s Rotary Club, over 50 years old, has been quietly going about its service work in spite of the Covid restrictions.

The respected Club, with,membership increasing, inducted Margaret Dean as 2021/22 President at its meeting at the RSL Club last week.

At the meeting past President Janis Glasson tabled a summary of the Club’s activities over the past two years.

Overview of the Rotary Club of Molong Projects and Strategies from September 2019 to April 2021 The last 2 years saw the Rotary Club of Molong navigate the interruptions caused the Covid-19 pandemic with restrictions and a few meetings cancelled. However, we are pleased to recount below the active, thoughtful and worthwhile projects and events which have occurred!

Drought support for the local Community of Molong This commenced in December 2019. Molong and the surrounding district had undergone 4 years of drought resulting in immense anxiety and concern for local farmers, businesses, families and schools about individual’s wellbeing, financial concerns and the future of the land and the town.

The Rotary Club of Molong held a Drought Information Night in December 2019 for the local community (Grant Availability through Government and State Support was detailed) and was attended by many local community members and a visiting group from the North Sydney Sunrise Rotary Club. Local speakers representing the farming community, local business, local government councillors and local health professionals spoke on how the drought and the effects of a changing climate were having debilitating consequences on the community, the environment and local work availability.

From this evening, a very genuine partnership was forged between the Rotary Club of Molong and the Rotary Club of North Sydney Sunrise Club and this partnership continued, even as the Covid-19 situation developed. Molong Rotary

All welcome to come along. and the North Sydney Rotary Club secured two grants through the “double your money schemes” - Cabonne Council Community Grant Scheme and the Rotary Australia World Community Services Grant Scheme. In all, both the clubs raised $18,000 - $2,000 went to 13 local families who were suffering hardship because of the drought and $16,000 was given to the local schools to assist with school excursion costs, as many parents were struggling to pay for the necessary excursions.

There was a celebratory dinner in July 2020 in Molong attended by members of both clubs and brought city and regional thinking together about the reality of living with the drought and the need to consider the effects of climate on our region, NSW and Australia.

Community Support The Rotary Club of Molong supported the local community through assistance with the following events (though a number were cancelled because of the Covid-19 situation) • Molong Advancement Group Market Days (organising a bookstall at the market for the local Historical society and raising money for their coffers) – Easter 2021.

• Spring Molong Arts Event (SMARTS) 2019 (assisting with the door entry, People’s prize etc).

• Inaugural Molong Poetry Brawl Event (in which two members introduced the Brawl (reflecting Banjo Paterson’s poetry) with a poem about the rules of Covid-19).

• Helping with the sheep dogs and in the kitchen of the NSW Sheep Dog Trial which are held in Molong annually.

2021 Central West Is Best Photography Competition Winners

Regional Development Australia Central West (RDA Central West) received close to 400 entries in this year’s Central West is Best Photography Competition.

‘There’s no place like home’ was the theme for 2021, with applicants encouraged to capture the essence of their hometown.

RDA Central West Chair, Ruth Fagan, said the competition, now in its third year, continues to grow and celebrate the region.

“We had an overwhelming response to the competition this year, receiving a total of 392 entries across the Junior and Open categories,” said Mrs. Fagan.

"This year we wanted to focus on why the Central West is a great place to live - after all, it's home to 180,000 people and is made up of some terrific towns and villages and beautiful landscapes.

“We would like to extend our thanks to everyone who entered the competition – the judges certainly had a tough decision but we are thrilled to announce this year’s prize winners.”

Microscopic plastic particles from our laundry are threatening the planet's rivers, oceans, wildlife and, ultimately, us. So what can we do about it?

Most people wear synthetic fibres such as polyester, acrylic, nylon or Lycra in some form every day. But these man-made fabrics, from which more than 60 percent of all the world's clothing is made, have a nasty surprise up their sleeves: when they're washed, they release tiny plastic particles - microfibres - that flow by the billions with waste-water down the drain, then through water-treatment plants and out into the world's rivers, lakes, and oceans.

'Different fabrics can have varying levels of emissions,' says Richard Thompson, professor of marine biology and leader of the lnternational Marine Litter Research Unit, whose team conducted a 12-month investigation into what happens when synthetic materials are washed in a machine. Using different combinations of water temperature and detergents, they found acrylics shed the most synthetic particles - a staggering 730,000 microfibres per wash, five times more than polyester-cotton-blend fabrics and nearly one and a half times as many as polyester.

While much more research needs to be done, scientists have already proven that the problem is widespread. ‘Clothing fibres are the most abundant form of waste material found in habitats worldwide and the problem is worsening,’ says Mark Anthony Browne, a senior research associate with the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of New South Wales, Australia. ln a groundbreaking paper, Mark revealed that microfibres made up 85 percent of man-made debris on shorelines around the world: ‘ln estuarine habitats, the quantity of microplastics can be nearly twice that of larger debris, yet it’s a contaminant that’s been largely ignored.’

Unlike a plastic bag, which can be photographed enticing a turtle that mistakenly thinks it’s eating a jellyfish, or discarded fishing gear seen ensnaring a seal, the danger lurking in laundry is invisible. lt’s also largely a case of “out of sight, out of mind”. (extract from Breathe Magazine 29)

When the NSW - Victoria border was first closed last year, radio news bulletins repeatedly said that it is the first time in a century (since the Spanish Flu outbreak).

Not quite right - the border was closed to children in 1937 during the infantile paralysis (Polio) outbreak as this clipping from the Sydney Morning Herald of 26 August 1937 reports.

And a lot of us will remember that it was not until the 1950's that a vaccine was developed.

In Australia, the last two epidemics were in 1956 and 1961 to 1962. Following the introduction of polio vaccine in the 1950s, the last case of locally acquired polio in Australia was in 1972. Australia was declared polio free in 2000.

Polio is caused by the poliovirus. It is a serious disease that can lead to long-term disability, paralysis and death. Most people recover completely, but a small number experience muscle and nerve damage that result in lifelong disability.

A polio survivors story

Australia’s last Polio pandemic was from the mid-1930s to 1956. Like during COVID-19 health authorities and communities were seriously challenged due to the lack of knowledge of the cause of Polio and the lack of a vaccinne. That was until a US bacteriologist, Jonas Salk, produced the firstever vaccine in 1955.

Poliomyelitis, was also called Infantile Paralysis because it especially attacked young children.

Families across Australia feared Polio as did those families and health officials across the world.

It could kill you, or paralyse you for life, or leave you permanently crippled. at least able to walk.

In South Australia alone in 1951 there were 1491 cases. Look at this: It sounds familiar, doesn’t it? And this Polio pandemic lasted for more than twenty years.

Summer was the worst time. So some years the state governments ordered schools to start later after the long Christmas vacation. In 1938 this was 15th March, and in 1948, 24th February. Some schools let students stay home and be taught by correspondence. Familiar? All kinds of things were tried, desperately: Ways to Limit the Spread of Polio Crowding of children in rooms, halls, or other enclosed places was suggested to be undesirable (crowding in swimming pools is considered especially likely to spread infection). Operations for removal of tonsils and adenoids, or for extraction of teeth should be postponed unless urgently required.

General hygienic measures, such as control of flies, boiling milk, washing uncooked fruit, and attention to all aspects of personal cleanliness are desirable.

Until 1956, newspapers and radio were full of news about Polio, and frenetic advice about how to avoid it, though without avail.

But what young people have even heard of Polio today?

Bees are not neat freaks away from their hive. They require easy access to a food source. You may be asking yourself “what do I grow”.

One answer is not a mono culture. An example of this is a single species lawn or green space.

Bees aren’t fussed by an immaculate weed free lawn. Some of us may have the memory of a bee sting on a barefoot whilst walking across the lawn.

This lawn would have consisted of maybe clovers and dandelion flowers, (bee flora )which you may normally spray to eradicate.

Take another look and consider redirecting your garden approach to leave the clovers and dandelion flowers to encourage the bees. To poison or to dig out means that the bees will miss out on what has been traditionally important nectar and pollen that compromises the bees health and foraging patterns.

Introducing bees to your environment is less complex than you may think. When making decisions on planning your strategy a good mantra is to say to yourself (‘is this good for the bees or good for just me?’) You need to create the best environment to encourage the bees to use your space.

First, bees forage for their food source - they can gather nectar and pollen from quite a large area flying in some case kilometres if they have to. Like most creatures they would rather have it easy.

One major obstacle that disrupts their habit is chemical contamination. Be aware of what you use around the garden that will affect the bees performance and presence. Avoid using harmful products. When shopping, the mentioned mantra should apply (‘is it good for the bees or good for just me?’)

Rozzi adds .... When in flower, herbs like oregano, dill, chives, rosemary, lavender, basil, dill and parsley will all attract bees to your herb garden or window box. Broad beans, runner beans, rocket, apples and berries also produce flowers that our pollinating pals will think is the bee's knees.

Sue adds ... Attracting bees and other pollinators to your garden is very important as these valuable insects pollinate so many of the fruits and veggies we grow. Without them the veggie patch and orchard would look pretty bare.

Even though honey bees are the best known pollinators there are many other insect pollinators that we can attract including native bees, pollen beetles, adult hoverflies, some moths and more.

Despite their diversity they’re all after one thing and that’s the food found in flowers – pollen and nectar.

So having more flowers in your garden will attract more pollinators.

In the world of flowers though some are more attractive to pollinators than others. This is because they may have more pollen and nectar than other flowers, they may flower at a time when there aren’t many other plants in flower or the flower structure may just be more conducive to landing and feasting.

REG’S BENCH The Navy found they had too many officers and decided to offer an early retirement bonus. They promised any officer who volunteered for Retirement a bonus of $1,000 for every inch measured in a straight line between any Two points in his body.. The officer got to choose what those two points would be.

The first officer who accepted asked that he be measured from the top of his head to the tip of ...his toes. He was measured at six feet and walked out with a bonus of $72,000.

The second officer who accepted was a little smarter and asked to be measured from the tip of his outstretched hands to his toes. He walked Out with $96,000.

The third one was a non-commissioned officer, a grizzly old Chief who, when asked where he would like to be measured replied, 'From the tip of my weenie to my testicles.'

It was suggested by the pension man that he might want to reconsider, explaining about the nice big cheques the previous two Officers had received.

But the old Chief insisted and they decided to go along with him providing the measurement was taken by a Medical Officer. The Medical Officer arrived and instructed the Chief to 'drop 'em,' which he did. The medical officer placed the tape measure on the tip of the Chief's penis and began to work back. "Dear Lord!", he suddenly exclaimed, ''Where are your testicles?''

Sport Molong Golf Sunday We were lucky enough to play a three person eighteen hole ambrose at Royal Molong golf course on Sunday before the rain came although the last group may have got wet playing the last hole. We had twenty one players with the winners being Beau, Matt and Pete and Ged, Al and Matt Earle coming in second place. This week we had Beau playing with us but no sign of his brother Jye although it was suggested Jye may have been “tired” after attending the Rugby presentation the night before also at the golf club.

Maybe next week we might get them both at golf. It was also good to see George Betts having a hit with us again. It’s a few months since he last joined us on a Sunday morning.

I’m not sure how he went.

There were around 260 mixed quality cows yarded. The usual field of buyers were operating along with the return of a couple of southern feeder orders.

Young cattle to the trade were 12c dearer with prime vealers selling to 576c/kg. Prime steer yearlings sold from 470c to 555c while the prime heifer yearlings sold from 460c to 576c/ kg. Feeder steers and heifers were up to 15c dearer with the feeder steers selling from 480c to 583c/kg. Feeder heifers sold from 458c to 552c/kg. Young cattle to the restockers were again dearer with the young steers selling from 620c to 818c while the young heifers sold to 686c/kg.

Grown steers were 2c to 4c dearer while the grown heifers were 4c/kg cheaper. Prime grown steers sold from 440c to 500c while the grown heifers sold from 420c also to 500c/kg.

CTLX SHEEP 6 October It was a mixed yarding with a good selection of trade weight new season lambs in fresh condition along with odd pens of heavier weights.

The quality of old lambs was just fair and there were only a few pens of Merino lambs yarded. Not all the usual buyers attended due to the smaller number.

Trade weight new season lambs were $8/ head cheaper for the lighter weights and close to firm for the heavier trade weights. Trade weight new season lambs sold from $170 to $249/head to average between 880c and 945c/ kg cwt. Trade weight old lambs sold from $152 to $244/head. Heavy weight lambs were up to $15 cheaper with the old lambs over 24kg selling from $243 to $270/head. The few heavy weight new season lambs sold from $250 to $254/head to average 965c/kg cwt. The few Merino lambs were $8 cheaper with the trade weights selling from $150 to $180/head.

Restocker lambs were around firm selling from $156 to $195/head. Hoggets sold to $224/head.

Merino and crossbred ewes made up the majority in a mostly good quality yarding of mutton where most grades were up to $18/ head dearer.

Merino ewes sold from $124 to $178 while crossbred ewes sold from $195 to $241/ head. Merino wethers sold to $179/head. The restockers paid $124 and $154/head for sound mouth shorn Merino ewes.

Importantly, a Rotary Club of Molong Facebook page (and being managed by Jonathan Dean) and Email was set up in 2021.

Additionally, the Working with Children Compliance was updated (with the Office of Guardianship) as well as Insurance Formalities – thanks to Bill Hopper and Janis Glasson.

The important Tourism Project – Self Guided walks commenced in 2020 and has been brilliantly organised by Margaret Dean and assisted by members of the club. Work has continued, despite Covid -19 interruptions in 2021. This project has been extremely well received by the local community and will be realised in this Rotary Year.
