Car torched in Molong INSIDE A family woke in the early hours of Saturday morning to the smell of acrid smoke coming from their vehicle parked in the front yard. "We needed the car" said the local mum who suffers a severe physical disability including a lung condition which was seriously affected by the fire.

"The fire-brigade, police, SES and ambulance arrived quickly" said the women's son who is his mum's fulltime carer. "But the car was already beyond repair".

The Express is waiting on a Police Report to confirm other crime reported in town last Friday night and in the early hours of Saturday morning. In the meantime, the Express has organised a replacement car so that the mother and son can attend medical appointments, shop etc.

Bank St toilets - a quick recovery is a good recovery

Well done to Council staff - responding well to the Express’ and many other entreaties to council about the cleaning of the refurbushed Bank St public toilets.

A new regime has been put in place with noticeable results.

Also, sensor taps and electric hand dryers have been installed and signage.

Council advised that the cleaning budget is not allocated by town, but has an overall allocated budget which has been determined by considering the level of hours required to service each amenities block in Cabonne. The current 19/20 budget is modelled on an average of 5 hours of cleaning of Bank st toilets per week Cabonne Public Conveniences/Amenities 19/20 budget allocated is $324,707. In comparison the 19/20 total spend was $330,350.

In 19/20 more was spent than originally budgeted.

Any increase to level of service of toilet blocks will require an increase to this budget.

A further impact is the reassigning of staff from other duties, this reduces time to undertake other tasks. “Due to feedback from the public, we will be increasing the servicing of Bank St toilets to include an afternoon service, before the afternoon peak. This will not be a complete service, but to be restock toilet paper and clean up any unintended spills or rubbish. This is to begin immediately.”

Pool questions answered

As ever, Dale Jones, Cabonne Council’s Media and Community Engagement Manager promptly responded to your questions about the Molong Pool and the new management arrangements. also included are the Pool Managers’s comments.

Thanks Dale. Here is the reply: 1) Early opening for lap swimmers Lap swimming is to commence from Wednesday 13th November from 6am to 9am. This will continue for a three week trial for three weeks. Dates being, 13th, 15th, 20th, 22nd, 27th and 29th November. During this time we would like feedback from people utilising the service.

We will also be collecting data to show patronage. This will assist us to deliver the service at the times the community will utilise it. Feedback on days of the week requested are appreciated, but the availability of qualified lifeguards has been an issue for the pool manager. With an improvement to staff availability, the pool manager will be able to ensure the early openings are staffed appropriately. This is a great opportunity for a part time job, if any locals are interested, I would encourage them to contact Molong Pool.

The Molong Pool managers are capturing data for our use during next pool season. This will help us to refine the opening hours and ensure peak demand is met and lifeguarding services are appropriate during this time. The ability for the Pool manager to work with Council to undertake this data collection, will prove beneficial in shaping the future direction of Molong Pool.

2) Removing the two lap areas from the middle of the pool so that there is room for recreational swimmers and those who exercise across the pool In previous seasons the community requested on a number of occasions the addition of lane ropes during the day, outside of morning lap swimming. This allows for lap swimming at all hours of the day, especially for those unable to attend the early morning

opening. It is due to these requests, that the council has passed on to the pool manager that lap swimming with lane ropes are to be available for community use at any time of the day. The pool manager has also noted to the council that lane ropes as a safety device have become standard practice in public swimming pools.

Comment provided by the Pool ManagerChief Executive Officer of Lifeguarding Services Australia, Stan Wall Lane ropes are used as a risk mitigation tool to designate different programs in different areas, the use of the lane ropes not only provides a lap swimmer the ability to stay straight it is used in combination with lane markings on the bottom of the pool to ensure people do not clash when swimming in a lane.

The appropriate position to swim in Australia is on the left hand side of a lane so that people have room to overtake and also you do not swim into people coming back in the same lane.

Lane Ropes are also a fundamental use in drowning prevention and provide a rest point for week or not confident swimmers to hold on to, this provides added mitigation when addressing the risk of drowning and is one of the layers including Lifeguards, Parental Supervision and Learn to Swim Programs which mitigate the risk of drowning.

The pool allocation has been implemented to be able to provide for recreational swimming, lap swimming and also programs, simultaneously.

Each of these areas is designated by ropes and also signage which has arrived and will be utilised once the signage bases are delivered.

As you know we are required to have these mitigation strategies in place to address the risk to the public and meet the requirements of the NSW Occupational Health & Safety Act to show due diligence.

The contractor may source external labour or skills to run an activity at the pool and this would influence the charge to the public. Fees and charges this year have been revised due to feedback from the community.

This includes the addition of a child, pensioner and concession card holder discount, reducing daily entry from $4.20 to $3.00 or season ticket reduction from $113 to $81.00. Free spectator/ non swimmer entry has been added, with a reduction from $3.20 last season.

I am unsure of how the figure of $50.00 per person came from. The Aqua aerobics will be conducted while the pool is open to other users, as such we will be utilising the ropes as a way to separate different user groups and provide everyone access simultaneously to this community asset.

As you may have heard Oberon Council have laid down a challenge to see which of our two Councils can raise the most money for Movember.

Mayor Kevin Beatty and other councillors are sporting new moes - and look great too.

Movember raises funds to help improve men’s health across three key areas: Mental Health and Suicide Prevention, Testicular Cancer and Prostate Cancer. Over the years they have raised millions of dollars for these causes.

Everyone is invited to participate.

Movember is not just for men - women and those folliclychallenged can participate by Moving for Movember by walking or running 60km over the month, that’s 60 km for the 60 men lost through suicide every hour

around the world.

More than a third of visitors to regional areas, such as Cabonne, come primarily to visit friends or relatives, however little is known about how much these visitors inject into the local economy.

Now, a survey has been created to capture information on the value friends and relatives offer to regional economies in the Central West of NSW. The survey is part of the WRI Tourism Monitor project being coordinated by the Western Research Institute.

“The many visitors to the Central West who stay in the homes of friends or relatives provide a major contribution to the visitor economy that we haven’t been able to count previously,” Cabonne Mayor Kevin Beatty said.

“When our friends and family come to visit, we spend more in our weekly grocery shopping, or we take them out for a meal, visit an attraction or attend an event.

This extra spending quickly adds up to a significant contribution into our regional economies.”

Cr Beatty said the information gathered through the survey will help to develop a complete picture of the impact those visiting friends and relatives have in Cabonne.

“If you live locally and have out of town friends or relatives who come and stay with you, I urge you to complete the survey.”

The online survey is available at wri.org.au/surveys and anyone who has hosted visiting friends or relatives in 2019 is encouraged to participate.

Help us determine how much your visitors add to our economy

Central West family businesses set to gain from experts’ visit to Parkes Family businesses in and around the Central West region will have the opportunity to receive valuable tools and advice on succession planning from a team of industry experts at a FREE, oneday workshop to be held in Parkes on Thursday 28 November 2019.

Following the success of a similar event held in Narromine earlier this year, the National Association for Loss and Grief’s (NALAG) ‘Our Shout’ program coordinator, Ms.Brenda Baker, is hoping to improve the experiences of succession for a greater number of family businesses. “The workshop in Narromine was attended by over 120 people and the feedback we received was overwhelmingly positive,” she said.

NALAG’s ‘Our Shout’ program promotes positive strategies to improve wellbeing and resilience in rural NSW communities.

“Communication in family-run business is crucial not only for financial success but also the emotional and mental wellbeing of all family members that are involved in the partnership.

Family members that are able to express their needs and concerns in a way that is productive and supportive of other family members often leads to healthy and long term sustainable family partnerships that are able to weather the hardships of not only drought but of the many other challenges that face rural and regional communities,” said Brenda Baker.

The workshop’s expert panel will include Family Succession Advisor, James Hamilton and Succession Law Specialist, Claire Booth.

Ms. Booth says drought conditions should not deter families from succession planning, “The

impact on the drought for some farming families has meant people are stuck in a holding pattern, waiting for things to improve before starting or finishing succession planning. However, what we’re hearing from the banking sector is if a family has been thinking about a succession plan now is actually a good time to sit down and discuss the options.

“Farmers rarely want a hand out, but a hand up – they want to be in charge of their future, and what happens to their land, especially when it comes to handing over assets or management to the next generation,” said Claire Booth.

Regional Development Australia Central West’s CEO Mr. Sam Harma added: “This workshop will ensure attendees from across the Central West are empowered with powerful new communication skills, take home checklists on how to approach the succession plan as well as insights from the banking sector as to how best approach the bank when things are tough, cash flow is low, equity levels are stretched and the impact of drought affects even the most informed plan. Family businesses are the back-bone of our communities and we’re positive that the new skills and tools learnt at this workshop will have positive outcomes across the region.”

The ‘Family Matters: Succession Planning Workshop’ will be held at Parkes Services Club from 9am-4pm on Thursday 28 November and is supported by: Regional Development Australia Central West, Parkes Shire Council, Rural Financial Counselling Service and the Department of Primary Industries’ Rural Resilience Program.

The Molong Express is proud to be a weekly paper for everyone - including town and district Seniors, Retirees, the Disabled, the Aged.

Paul and I feel these ‘gems’ of Cabonne communities hold the ‘wisdom of life’ - yet they can be overlooked in the communities they helped to build and contributed enormously to.

Many have lived in Molong, Manildra, Cumnock, Cudal, Yeoval (where the Express extends to) since

their birth, raising families, helping to build better schools, shops, health facilities, sporting clubs, hobby groups, craft cottages etc. Because they find it difficult to attend night meetings - and have little to no access to today’s social media - their views and thoughts, opinions about the further building of their town and community etc can be overlooked.

Overlooked, but not at the Express where many bring to us their ideas. “Brilliant” we often say - “Worthwhile”

... And, we pass these on to the relevant organisation or Council - or local Member etc. etc.

What about?

“Congratulations to Bruno (Bennett - see last week’s Letter to the Editor) who has courageously come forward with a valid reason for trying to bring the ‘new arrangements’ at the (Molong) swimming pool to the wider community’s attention and hopefully change.

Whilst it can be difficult to put pen to paper and be printed in the Express (or any other media outlet) - Bruno has been prepared to put his case forward, and to represent other users who prefer a daily summer exercise routine walking across the pool - rather than length lap lane swimming.

It should be remembered by the whole community and Cabonne Council No.1. The local pool is a public asset to serve the needs of the whole community.

No.2. Local people have their names on the fundraising ‘bricks’ on the entrance wall. Some years ago, Molong and district residents raised money for the refurbishment of the pool. Bruno and his school mates and friends, like past generations of local kids, probably have their names on that wall.

Molong Pool I am writing to ask if you could publish some information about our Molong Community Swimming Pool in your newspaper. For 'Oldies' like myself who don't use 'electronic social media' it is good to be able to read information in our local newspaper.

As I understand our Community Pool has a new management team this year, it would be interesting to have some information about the team and what to expect in relation to the pool this coming season, such as:1. The background of the Management Team Organisation and its qualifications for the role.

2. Times/days the pool will be available to members of the community.

3. Fees for various activities at the pool.

4. What Services are being offered to children, parents and other users of the pool including users with special needs due to health or physical conditions.

If you are able to provide some or all of the above information it will enable myself and others to assess whether the pool and services will meet our needs and budget this year.

When the man got out to fix it, a cow came along and stopped beside him.

"Your trouble is probably in the carburetor," said the cow.

Startled, the man jumped back and ran down the road until he met a farmer who happened to be Reg. Bennett.

The amazed man told Reg. his story.

"Was it a large red cow with a brown spot over the right eye?" asked Reg. "Yes, yes," the man replied.

Krakatoa Resources Limited via its wholly owned subsidiary Krakatoa Australia Pty Ltd, is the beneficial owner of Exploration Licence 8153 (EL8153) which is currently held by Locksley Holdings Pty Ltd (ACN 083 912 092).

Krakatoa hereby notifies that they have engaged Thomson Aviation to undertake a drone (UAV - unmanned aerial vehicle) based magnetics survey in the Shades Creek area, in the north western portion of EL8153. The UAV Magnetics System is designed to detect changes in the earth’s magnetic field as it flies in a grid like pattern over the land.

The drone will fly at 45m above ground level with the sensor (magnetometer sensor) at 30m above ground level (15m tether from the drone). The drone has no downward facing cameras; however, it does have a forward-facing camera that assists with navigation, particularly where obstacles may be present. No imagery is captured by the drone.

Due to the NSW fires, the planned survey from 11th November 2019 was delayed. The entire survey is now planned to take place over a 3 or 4 day period, beginning the week of the 25th November 2019.

Great stories come to the Express in different ways - most days in fact.

Writers, photographers, historians find stories through observation ... and their curious minds. Some years ago I saw Betts Street resident, the late Peggy Blair, through the eyes of a portrait photographer. “See this Rozzi?”

Every line on Peggy’s face told a story. Of course, the delightful Bett’s Street resident responded with her usual “bulls t” comment.

But the talented former Molong photographer had it right. A laugh line, a frown, a kiss from the sun (freckles) and a lifetime of well, ‘wrinkles’, tells a story about one’s life.

That’s why I am often found sitting in local and city cafes wandering around tiny villages to sitting at Circular Quay ... observing ... imagining ... talking, photographing the lives of those hurrying past.

For example, last week I noticed an interesting blue shirt on a tall chap when I wandered into Michael and Cheryn’s ‘Sweetness’ in Bank Street.

No ordinary working shirt like the ones popular around town.

When his wife sat down to enjoy their coffee, I wandered over and asked “where did you find that fabulous shirt”.

That simple question set off a conversation about the shirt (Columbia brand, ‘Blood & Guts’ style).

Meet Ron and

Sandra Lange retirees travelling with caravan from the coastal town of Ballina to Tambar Springs to volunteer their time to a farmer.

“We came from the land” said Ron “so we have the experience and skills to offer - and we understand the lives, the highs and the lows, of those relying on the land.”

Initially, the Lange’s came across the volunteer organisation, Blaze Aid, an organisation who help to rebuild properties and lives after natural disasters occur e.g. fire, flood.

Ron and Sandra joined and headed off as volunteers to help rebuild fences. And, as the Lange’s added “there is nothing that helps a farmer and their family more than sitting over a cuppa, or a beer - and simply listening and talking”.

“One of our first projects with Blaze Aid was at Tambar Springs where we helped a property owner in a time of need. “We’re now heading back with our caravan to stay in - to help feed-out and other daily farm jobs. We’ve become good friends - so we set up our van at the back of the house - and sit together and listen and talk.”

As retirees, the Lange’s enjoy their caravan travels when they hit the ‘grey nomad’ highway for a few weeks or months at a time. But they don’t forget to stop at Tambar Springs to lend a hand and offer a warm hand of goodwill.

Officiated by Father Ted Evendon (formally of Saint Mathews Cumnock) the Day began with a beautiful sunny start – to then be surprised by 18 mils of rain just as Lucy was to walk down the garden aisle.

This created even more excitement “for those of us in drought”- and the venue was quickly changed into the beautifully decorated shed near the home.

An amazing aisle of family and friends was formed from one end of the shed to the other – and everyone became very much part of the amazing welcome to

The most amazing sunset and rainbow gave an incredible opportunity for photos and we were soon dancing under the stars and fairy lights. An amazing fireworks display put on by the groom’s cousins was magical.

The happy couple will find time for a honeymoon next year. They just wanted to spend time at home at Tenanbung which was just lovely.

Also thanks to the Cumnock Bowling Club Chinese for hosting the guests on Friday night for a banquet dinner. This was a great injection to the community

AGENTS YARDED 11100 LAMBS AND 5450 SHEEP It was a good quality yarding with good numbers of ideal trade lambs along with once again, a very good selection of young lambs to suit the restockers. There were also a few pens of well finished heavy

weights yarded. Most of the regular buyers were in attendance and operating.

Light weight lambs to the processors were $14 to $16 cheaper, with the 12-18kg 2 scores selling from $94 to $148/head. Trade lambs were $10 to $12 cheaper with the trade weight new season lambs selling from $128 to $182/head. Trade weight old lambs sold from $136 to $174/head. Heavy weight lambs were $15 cheaper with the over 24kg 4 score new season lambs selling from $168 to $212/head. AGENTS YARDED 3750 It was a good quality yarding with some top lines of ideal feeder cattle along with some good pens of well finished grown steers and heifers. Once again cows and grown heifers made up a large percentage of the yarding and there were good numbers of bobby calves. All the regular buyers were in attendance along with the return of a couple of feeder orders.

Young cattle to the trade were firm with prime steer yearlings selling from 285c to 297c while the prime heifer yearlings sold

to 290c/kg. Feeder steers were up to 17c dearer while the lightweight feeder heifers were 10/kg cheaper. The medium weight feeder heifers were 6c/kg dearer. The feeder steers sold from 253c to 324c while the feeder heifers sold from 245c to 281c/ kg.

Grown steers were 17c cheaper with the prime medium and heavy weights selling from 288c to 297c/kg. Grown heifers were 15c cheaper with the better types selling from 256c to 290c/kg. Cows were 8c cheaper with the 1 and 2 scores selling from 100c to 227c/kg. The better 3 and 4 score cows sold from 220c to 283c/kg for a C muscle cow Limousin cow. The prime heavy weight cows averaged 257c/kg. Bulls sold to 330c/kg.

Big weekend at flagship event 22 teams from across the region including Dubbo, Forbes, Lithgow, Trangi, Narromine, Cumnock, Gulgong and Orange took to the greens seeking a share of the winnings in the 2019 Bob Wicks Memorial Pairs Tournament one of Molong's major annual bowls events.

Held over two days at the weekend, Major Sponsors this year were Cabonne Council via its events assistance program, the Molong Rural Centre and the bowling club itself.

The greens were in excellent shape thanks to Phil McKenzie and Ian Gosper and helpers and the surrounds were their usual picture thanks especially to the Phantom Gardener.

Dan Smith & Josh Andriske, Dubbo Macquarie won the event followed by Paul & Michael Davis, Molong (2), J Mobbs & R Hamilton (3), M Wright & M Hopper, Molong (4) and T Weeks & L Brown, Molong (5).

Members and Directors were also on hand to cater to the needs of the players with Annabelle looking after the food side of things and Phil Gosper and Bart Sharp performing Umpire

On 26 October we had 9 visitors from Condobolin. We all enjoyed morning tea before taking to the courts.

There were 26 for a delicious lunch of quiche and salad which Annabelle supplied. We finished the day with a few more games and then afternoon tea to sustain them on the trip back.

Last week we took advantage of being lucky to have a 18 hole golf course - so 4 beginners and 7 regulars played the back 9.

5 regulars started on no. 1 hole and 2 regulars and 4 beginners started on the 13th.

At Hunter Caldwell last years grand finalists met for the first time since last seasons decider. Both teams had key players out but nevertheless fielded strong sides. Millthorpe batted first and despite losing an early wicket managed to score at a reasonable pace. Tim Low who was dropped early in his innings made Country pay dearly scoring this seasons first century with a brilliant 128 no. He was supported by James Milner 35 as Millthorpe pilled on the runs to record an impressive 4 for 240 after their 40 overs.

Stu Brisbane as usual was Country's best bowler with the economical figures of 0 for 18 from 10 overs, quite remarkable considering Millthorpe's total.

It was an uncharacteristic poor performance by Country's other bowlers and their fielding in general was poor as they gave away 40 runs in sundries.

The visitors amassed an amazing 6 for 269 batting first all Canowindra's top order fired, C Carpenter (94), Ben Traves (29) C Bloomfield (27), J Austin (54no) and S Austin (23) scoring freely. Lyndhurst added to their own downfall and misery dropping 12 catches.
