Molong Show buildings condemned ... but the Show will go on

Two iconic buildings at the Molong Showground, the Luncheon and Exhibition pavilions have both been condemned due to termite damage ... and age.

As happens with termites they remain well hidden until its usually too late to do much. Especially the case with buildings decades old.

However, Molong Show Society President, Colin Woodhouse and his loyal team of volunteers have decided that the 2019 Molong Annual Show (Sunday 22 September) will be held as planned.

The Show Society is in discussions with Cabonne Council on both short and long term options to accommodate show activities normally undertaken in the two pavilions

Don’t they want to keep us informed – or even vote?

APPARENTLY the NSW Electoral Commission, a statutory body, “has no budget” to advertise in the Molong Express or any other local paper from here to Gilgandra and Bourke and back to inform voters about the location of polling booths for the NSW State Election this Saturday, 23 March.

When independent country papers pointed out to the Commission that there are probably thousands of new voters who have either moved into a district or turned 18 in the past three years -– let alone existing voters who have to assume the polling places are where they were last time – they were advised that their papers should direct people to the commission’s website or reprint the information contained therein.

At a recent conference the

newly revitalised Country Press Association (CPA) of largely independent papers took the Deputy Prime Minister to task, reminding him that governments – and statutory organisations – now expect the independent newspapers, which are mostly country based, to print information sent as press releases, rather than pay for advertisements, as had been the practice in the past.

“This makes a mockery of their claim that they are supporting small business in the regions,” a spokeswoman for the CPA said.

With the millions being spent on pending State and Federal elections, one could be forgiven for thinking that a few thousand dollars of advertising in widely read local papers would be almost an obligation in a democracy.

Wellington

A FIVE KILOMETRE walking track will be developed in the Wellington CBD. Dubbo Regional Council has $321,000 for the track to run between Cameron, Bell, and Pioneer parks and past the Wellington Showground to Brennan’s Way. Council will spend $150,000 to extend the current path network from Cameron to Bell Park, while another $171,000 will go to start the work from Pioneer Park to the Brennan’s Way section. More funding will be needed to complete the loop.

The new path will eventually include the renewal of the Cameron Park pedestrian bridge; however at this stage Dubbo Regional Council hasn’t finalised the design or the cost.

Dubbo Regional mayor Ben Shields said he had received a lot of feedback about the pedestrian bridge.

As part of the redevelopment of the walking track, about 20 trees that are under powerlines will need to be removed between Pioneer Park and Brennan’s Way. They will be replaced with other trees.

Excluding the bridge, the work could be finished in September. —Wellington Times

NARROMINE POLICE are on the hunt to return a missing watch to its rightful owner.

Police said the watch was located at a recreational facility in the Narromine shire within the last nine months.

The blue Casio watch has the words ‘Michael love Mum & Dad 2.11.99’ engraved on the inside face.

Narromine Police Sergeant Michael Smith said they are hoping they can return the sentimentallooking item to its rightful owner.

“This item appears to have been a gift and as such would hold some sentimental value to its owner and their parents,” Sergeant Smith said.

“For those reasons alone, I would like to do all we can to get it back to its rightful owner.”

WITH A FOCUS on women’s personal and professional development, the Boss Babes Project will make a return to Mudgee this month.

This year, the Boss Babes Project will host another workshop at The Inside Shop with the aim of creating an inviting and supportive environment for the region’s business women.

“The purpose of the project is to give women

a space or opportunity to feel like they’re not alone,” Boss Babes Project owner Jess Inder said.

One of the main factors that attribute to the success of a business in the eyes of Ms Inder is self love which is a key part of the workshop.

As a Goolma local, Jess is no stranger to the popularity of careers in mining and farming, but says retail is what makes Mudgee a top destination.

If every shop can support each other, it’s only better for the town.

“Everyone’s a farmer or everyone works in the mines, there’s all these different things, and I understand they’re really important, my family works in those industries, but at the same time, it’s the shops in town that bring all the tourism in,” she said.

“Tourism and retail is very high up there with what keeps the town going, and unless you look after those businesses, people miss out.

“It’s really important that every woman knows whether she’s got the biggest business or the smallest business that she can give value to other businesses.

“You don’t have to promote that your business is the best in town, you can actually sit down and say what you’re struggling with and what you’re trying to achieve and saying ‘I just need some help with it’.”

COWRA ROTARY will be hosting the “Groovy Booby Bus” founder Donna Falconer at their weekly meeting on Thursday, March 21 at Cowra Bowling Club.

Donna was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009 at 44 years of age.

“I have now been 10 years clear, and have devoted much of my life since that diagnosis with helping raise awareness and offering support for others, most notably through my work in establishing a local support charity Pink Angels Inc,” she said.

Three years ago she made the decision to quit her job and travel around regional Australia spreading the message about the importance of early detection.

“I quit my job, sold my house, bought a Winnebago and hit the road around regional Australia, at my own expense, to share the message of the importance of early detection of breast cancer,” Ms Falconer said.

Molong gets New Library and Community Centre Residents in Molong will soon be able to benefit from a modern and recently refurbished Molong Library & Community Learning Centre, thanks to funding provided by the NSW Liberals and Nationals Government.

National’s candidate for Orange Kate Hazelton and Parliamentary Secretary for Western NSW Rick Colless came to Molong last Friday to meet with Cabonne Shire Council to announce $5 million for this project.

“The community has been asking for this funding – and I’m proud to announce that the NSW Liberals and Nationals were able to deliver it,” Mr Colless said.

“The current community hall in Cabonne is more than 130 years old. It is deteriorated and is in need of an upgrade. It’s a project that the community has been calling for,” Mrs Hazelton said.

“The hall will be transformed into a new library and community learning centre. It will be a community hub for all residents to enjoy.

“The expected location will be right across from council chambers – and will mean residents will not have to navigate what currently is an unsafe crossing along the Mitchell Highway to access the library.

“Local schools students will also benefit greatly from this facility and will be encouraged to utilise the study areas provided and the centre will have a space to allow them to participate in programmed activities.

“The centre will not only cater for the Molong community but also for surrounding districts, including towns such as Manildra and Cudal.

Work on the library and community hall will complement each other – and bring our country communities together.

“The project will include; an expanded, accessible and modern community building adjacent to the existing community hall, new indoor and outdoor areas with capacity for meetings, and a new exhibition,” she said.

A bit of history

Heather Nicholls penned a few snippets on the history of the Community Hall site • The land for the proposed Molong school of arts building (aka the community hall) was acquired in March 1877 for £62. Even at that time the committee had a nucleus of donated books for the planned library.

• Foundation stone laid by Ald Hughes on 23 April 1879. The prediction was three months to construct the building. A time capsule including a copy of the Molong newspaper was set into the south west wall.

• A banquet was held at the school of arts in 1887 for Premier Sir Henry Parkes after he laid the foundation stone for the Queens Hospital (aka Molong cottage hospital).

• The school of arts library operated from the site for over 70 years.

By late 1949 there was rumblings that the new way of running modern libraries was to hand them over to the local council. At that time the school of arts library held 2,500 books.

• The building was used as a library, meeting rooms, council office, venue for balls and debates and fund raisers. It featured a billard room early in the 1900s.

• Anzac Day services were held there. Politicians campaigned from there.

More at stake than a new library At its meeting in June 2016 Cabonne Council endorsed a report on a proposal that would see the Molong Library relocated from the Railway Station to a new location adjacent to the Molong Community Hall in Bank Street.

Previously it had been proposed to relocate the Library to a refurbished "Connelly’s store" building next to the Council Chambers.

The preferred location was the Mitchell Room and council acquired a neighbouring dwelling to give a more substantial space for a library.

In January 2017 tendered prices for the new library complex came in at more than double what Cabonne Council had budgeted for.

The proposal has languished ever since - until now.

There is more at stake than a new library / learining centre and hall with the announced proposal.

The current location of the small library at the railway station has hindered development of modern library facilities, especially for students and youth and indeed the railway station itself.

There are some downstream effects that we need to consider: Freeing the Railway Station for tourist development.

Few towns have an historic railway station smack bang in the middle of their CBD. Even then they still manage to make worthwhile use of them.

The housing of the library in the middle of the station building has long paralysed its use for other purposes.

Previous attempts have been thwarted by the library occupying the prime space.

A tourist point / cellar door or other traveller related outlet would act as a tourist tripwire across the Mitchell highway - to the benefit of the whole town.

This idea has been around for generations.

Now is the time to finally act.

Providing community function/meeting rooms.

Since the closure of the condemned Mitchell Room ages ago there has been no facility for

community and charity groups to meet or conduct their activities.

The UPA and HealthOne have generously assisted but not all activities are compatible and there is limited access to HealthOne after hours.

Community Hall upgrades.

The Community Hall is, well, pretty sad.

The entrance is inaccessible and looks like a public toilet.

One of the hall's major users, the annual month long Molong Players theatre production, was postponed in 2017.

The show brings up to 2000 visitors and local school and sporting groups miss out on funds from catering for the shows.

But equally, if not more important, is the need for a modern multi-purpose hall with catering facilities that tourism and other event managers have assured us will attract regional conferences, weddings, Association dinners, entertainment events - you name it.

When Langdon's on Peabody closed some years ago it was booking nearly a wedding or function every fortnight.

All of which brings economic benefit to the district.

Everything seems to take so long - hopefully this time a significant project can go ahead.

Letters The revolution from the bush The major parties have always told us that a vote for the minor parties or independents is a wasted vote but really I don’t see the logic behind the claim it’s just a tactic to keep votes but this election it is prediction that there will be a backlash against the major parties at the polls and this backlash will come from the bush.

For a long time now residents of regional New South Wales have felt neglected by Labor and the Liberal/National parties who seem to put Sydney’s interests above everything else and as far they are concerned if you live on the other side of the mountain they want nothing to do with you but they still want your vote.

The major parties fail to realise that rural communities and farmers are the engine room of New South Wales and Australia and if the engine is neglected there is a possibility it will break down and when the engine goes the whole machinery will shut down. To put it in plain terms if the regional communities and industries go down the country will go with it.

It’s particularly disgraceful that the Nationals, the self proclaimed party of the farmer are pretty to leave the very people they claim that only they are capable of looking after hung and dry, literally and what little assistance they offer is a slap in the face to the farming communities and from what polls tell us and given recent events it looks as if the Nationals will be facing a similar fate to NSW Labor when they were defeated eight years ago they faced almost total obliteration. They needn’t blame the media, The SFFP or Labor

for this they need to point the blame squarely at their own arrogance and hubris as the reason for their undoing.

This is why rural voters are turning to the minor parties like The Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party because they want an alternative who will look out for the interests of their constituents and not how much power they hold.

It has been said that this election’s battlefront will be the bush, that is where the war will be won or lost.

The only way we can get rural New South Wales up and running again is to rebel against the major parties and vote for rural based minor party and/or independent candidate hence the result in a hung parliament these people will hold the balance of power and whoever they agree will be the minority government would impose strict conditions of legislative support and I hope these people drive a hard bargain with Labor and the coalition to put the bush first and Sydney second for once.

For years we have poured so much money into Sydney and we have received very little back for our infrastructure.

Sydney has enjoyed a feast whilst we are lucky to be thrown the scraps.

The March 23 revolution is drawing closer and that revolution will come from the bush ready to turn the traditional political status quo in this state on its collective ear.

Lifetime resident of Molong Maureen Kirkwood, now living at Gosling Creek, caught up with old friends on a recent visit.

School Funding Michael Daley, leader of the State Labor Party, has made a commitment to make available $2.7 billion in recurrent funding to public schools if Labor wins the upcoming State Election.

This commitment has not been matched by the State Coalition Parties. This commitment does match the proposed and agreed Gonski funding since cut by the Federal Coalition governments from 2013 onwards. NSW Labor has also announced that, if it forms government, it will work with a change in government at a federal level to become the first state committed to fully funding our public schools. What does this mean for Molong Central School?

According to the Gonski, and

then the Fair Funding modelling, the school was allocated an extra $1 million above what it currently receives from our governments.

That’s how much the Federal Coalition Government took from our community and gave instead to private schools, at least in part.

This means that if NSW Labor under Michael Daley win office Molong Central School should receive an extra million dollars in recurrent funding. Think what a positive difference that could make to the lives and futures of our children.

Farewell Cath & Grahame

My I through your pages publically thank Cathy & Grahame Jeffries for the fabulous job they have done over the past few years of running the Molong pool. The water was always sparkling and the surrounds and change rooms immaculate.

And let’s not forget the wonderful aqua aerobics sessions Cath has run for many years, an activity enjoyed by so many. A great way to exercise with the side benefit of many an enjoyable morning tea afterwards and many new friendships formed.

It should also be remembered that we now have a gym in Molong thanks Cath & Grahame Jeffries were farewelled at Ben Henry’s Hunky Chunky to Cathy. She started by training 4 Bakehouse last Friday women beside the pool and from there moved into a room at the Freemasons before moving into a bigger space in the Western Stores building.

So Cath has played a major part in the fitness of our community.

I wish them all the best as the pool closes on Saturday and they set off as full time ‘grey nomads’, we know they will be back occasionally to visit their children & grandchildren, but not, unfortunately, to the pool.

They will be missed.

Meet Annalise Livermore Cabonne’s Youth of the Month One of Molong’s high achievers is Annalise Livermore who from an early age has participated in sport, community volunteering ... and has achieved excellence throughout her primary/secondary school years ... and now in her chosen career roles.

Annalise recently added another achievement to her growing resume when she was awarded Cabonne Council’s Youth of the Month.

The daughter of Melissa and Neal Livermore (Molong), grandaughter of Eddie and Margaret Livermore (Manildra) Annalise and her siblings, Tom and Rebekkah, demonstrate the positive growth and belief in self, self-worth, and confidence that can be achieved when an extended family comes together to help ‘build’ their young ones.

Annalise has also had the benefit of a positive community surrounding and supporting her - the country saying “it takes a community to raise a child” this young woman truly understands.

In return, Annalise has helped to build the community she calls ‘home’.

Her Molong committment started at school at St. Joseph’s Primary School where she gained excellence in a number of subject and sporting areas.

At St. Joseph’s, Molong, there is a christian base where the older children mentor and support the younger children with each focussed on learning from each other. Such is the strength of the safe surrounds Annalise was able to achieve in - and grow within the benefits offered by a small christian school.

Again, Annalise was surrounded by “it takes a community to raise a child”.

From there - a new world opened for this young achiever when she walked through the doors of James Sheahan Catholic High School in Orange.

Once again, academic, music, sporting and participation achievements filled

followed.

But, now it is time to add a more specific career choice as an Apprentice Chef at one of the most notable restaurants in Orange.

With a busy life, Annalise has continued as a leader of St. John Cadets in Molong where she now supports the work of those who gave - and still give their time to raising many a community child i.e. Julie Dean, Les Dean, Kerry and John Burchett, Betty Newstead all long-time leaders of St. John Cadets Molong.

How to bring a rural town community together, like Molong, has only one answer - by residents wanting to give their time, ideas and wanting to belong, share information and work together. It’s not ‘rocket science’.

This week we have one of the town’s oldest events happening at the Rec. grounds. The NSW State Working Dog Championships. This is a key event for Molong and district - and one, as a whole community we should be able to celebrate and build onto. Problem is “who knows that it is on - and how does the town get involved?”.

This event brings people to town for 5 days.

It could bring even more visitors and tourists to Molong if we, as residents could come together and spread the major event throughout the town by adding additional interest. Example: Traders/ business owners/shops getting behind the event with window displays, locals taking the time to welcome the visitors to town, linking the event at the Rec. to the rest of the town. Ideas abound?

It just seemed like the thing to do.” The next day grandpa died. Father thought it was a strange coincidence.

Couldn’t sleep all night and got up at others, ... gorgeous. the crack of dawn to go to his office. He was nervous as a cat all day, had lunch sent in and watched the clock. He figured if he could get by until midnight he would be OK. He felt safe in the office, so instead of going home at the end of the day he stayed there, drinking coffee, looking at his watch and jumping at every sound.

Finally midnight arrived. He breathed a sigh of relief and went home. When he got home, his wife said, “I’ve never seen you work so late.

What’s the matter?” He said, “I don’t want to talk about it. I’ve just spent the worst day of my life.”

She said, “You think you had a bad day.

You’ll never believe what happened to me. This morning the mailman dropped dead on our porch.”

Of course, every step of the way, Melissa and Neal were there, Margaret and Eddie were also there - and Tom and Rebekkah.

After a school trek to Nepal and volunteering in a Himalayan School (fundraising and working to pay for her own expenses, and to take extra $$’s and resources to help families in the underprivileged areas) Annaliese decided to finish her HSC year and then look for a career opportunity.

19 Years of ‘Necessity’

What gets Graham Johns out of bed in the dark of the morning?N Coffee? Bacon & Egg Rolls?

“Necessity” he will say. Could that be ‘necessity’ for creating new ideas? Maybe.

Next month on 2 April Graham and his wife Cathy will celebrate 19 years as the entrepreneurial owners of the Molong Servo/Cafe. Molong has benefited and proud of the Johns’ achievements.

“Running a business is about being able to step up or step out’” said the dynamic ‘builder’ of the servo/cafe corner (Hill Street/Gidley Street).

Graham Johns and his wife Cathy started out in Molong 19 years ago when they purchased what was a small traditional country service station and mechanical works sited on the growing Mitchell Highway. In those days there would have been a small selection of chocolates, lollies and drinks available to customers.

Today, the site offers much more with food replacing the mechanical works - and good coffee replacing grease guns and oils.

Being an entrepreneur - and having the ‘guts’ to follow market demands and national trends for the service station sector - Graham and Cathy have not sat idle - nor failed to wisely plan ahead and invest $$’s in growth and innovation to remain in the ever-changing marketplace.

These two are innovators are not afraid of hardwork, long hours and committment. Graham’s story started as what he describes as a “counter jumper” in an auto wrecker business. As he gained new skills - he moved on to new experiences. He had his eye on the Molong servo and mechanical works with a vision in mind. He knew

that the service station sector was changing, rapidly, as owners saw the opportunity to meet more of the travelling customer’s needs. Coffee from a machine (not a dispenser), warm and cold foods served from a counter (not a dispenser), toilets modern, new and ultra clean (not one or two tucked away behind the buildings) - and petrol bowsers accessible, under cover, and easy to use.

Today, Graham has continued building on the corner to now include a baker, new counters, state of the art fast food machines capable of cooking delicious fish and chips in minutes - a counter full of the best in toasties, sandwiches, rolls, cakes, fruits.

New ideas continue to flow including the addition of an eat-in area where travellers can eat their take-aways and sit for awhile and take a break. New toilets follow on - signage has improved. One can see that Graham and Cathy make sure that the word “quality” is respected throughout their business.

The old saying in small business - “do your research, make a plan ... and go for it” must be the ‘mind food’ son-in-law Dave feeds Graham each morning when he arrives at the servo/cafe - no doubt with a new idea in his mind that came in the middle of the night. Surrounding

the business with a building/signage designer, an accountant, solicitor, a servo product/service designer helps to further form Graham’s ideas and to implement them. “It takes a team of the right people”. “Once the idea is put into place and investment $$’s committed - it takes the owner to ‘necessity’ to work longer hours and make things work” said Graham. At one time, Graham worked 14 hour days/7 days a week over 11 months to kick start some of his plans. It was “necessity” and “to keep our heads above water” said the gentle giant who has a love of farming and vintage cars (in his spare time).

This local entrepreneur has not stopped yet - he now owns surrounding buildings to the servo/cafe site - and holds a firm belief that the future of Molong is strong. It will be interesting to ‘watch this space’ as Graham Johns continues to create.

Perhaps it is not “necessity’ that gets this man of ideas out of bed in the early morning because he now has a very efficient and likeable team of loyal staff members in place working various shifts. He could retire!

Hardly possible for Graham Johns. Maybe “necessity” is about feeding the creative mind and the thrill that comes with ‘achievement’?

Betros boys pass through town

“Home” for a visit ... the Betros boys - Donny, Mick and Nick with local friend Keith Packham - who caught up over a steak and beer at the Freemasons last week. “Molong will always be my “home” said Donny who now lives in Brisbane.

Donny migrated to Australia from Lebanon in the late 1940’s with his parents who came to live and work in “the land of opportunity”.

Finding their way to Molong, the Betros family worked hard with Mr Betros working on the railways as a fettler and Mrs Betros raising the family and working their vegie and fruit shop.

On weekends the family worked their land (at Copper Hill) growing the vegies and fruits for their shop.

Some years ago, the Express interviewed Mrs Betros who proudly remembered when Donny started work. “My husband took Donny to the Rural Bank (once located on the corner of Bank

and Gidley Streets) to get a loan to buy property.

Working various jobs - Donny bought the old Cobb & Co. stables and what is now the land the Village Green stands on. He also bought the Salvation Army Hall which once stood in Gidley Street.

The Betros family then moved to Orange for a time before Donny returned from Bouganville where he worked in the building trade. He bought a service station in Sydney for the family to work and invested well in family owned and operated enterprises.

The Betros family still remember Molong and the people who helped them.

Molong women Carol and Melissa talk about living with Epilepsy

Carol Bourke and Melissa Wilson (both of Molong) have courageously come forward to promote 'Go Purple Epilepsy Awareness Day' on (Tuesday 26 March) to join in the effort to get people talking about the condition and to let those impacted by seizures know that they are not alone.

Carol Bourke's awareness of Epilepsy came in 2004 after she suffered a brain injury from a horse riding accident. "I had three seizures in hospital and then I was fine. 12 months after my accident I had another seizure. After a change in medication by my GP I have not had any seizures since.

However, I will be on medication for the rest of my life."

Melissa Wilson was diagnosed with the condition in 2005. "I had my first seizure when I was at work. I was cleaning at the time and just started shaking". Like Carol, Melissa has no memory of her seizures. "I've had several (seizures) since" said Melissa who, unlike Carol, has not been able to get her condition under control as yet. "I'm at the trial and error stage figuring out with my GP

which medicine is the right one for my condition."

Both Carol and Melissa have not been able to find full-time employment since their conditions were diagnosed. "It changes ones lifestyle" said Melissa who is respectful that employers are concerned about the OH&S implications if they give a job to someone who suffers the condition." Although both women would, understandably, like to return to the workforce and a career path and be treated in the same way as others.

"I lost my job because of my condition" said Carol. "I understand that having the condition places an OH&S risk for the employer - but there are ways we can be gainfully employed."

Governments giveth, then governments taketh away The world’s largest and deepest artesian basin, Australia’s Great Artesian Basin (GAB) lies under 1,700,000squ.km or nearly 22 per cent of the continent. Lying beneath most of Queensland and parts of the NT, SA and NSW, it is the only source of fresh water throughout much of inland Australia.

In places 3000 metres deep, it is estimated to contain 64,900 cubic kilometres of water.

It is fed largely from relatively high ground near the eastern edge of the basin in Qld and NSW and very gradually flows toward the south and west. A much smaller amount enters along the western margin in arid central Australia, flowing to the south and east.

Because sandstone is permeable, water gradually makes its way through the pores between the sand grains.

Calculations of the speed of recharge varies so I will not quote any figures here.

However, one eminent scientist quoted by the “Lock The Gate” movement, believes that the water does not come from the sediments of the basin itself but from the original rock below.

His theory holds that the water coming up the bores is not rainwater that has trickled beneath the plains, but ancient water that has “for eons laid quietly within the fractures and joints of the original crustal formations with which it came into being” – a closed system that can not be replenished.

The National Perspective Prior to European occupation, waters of the GAB discharged through mound springs, many in arid South Australia. These springs supported a variety of land and water creatures as well as Aboriginal communities and their trade routes.

After the arrival of Europeans, they enabled early exploration and faster communications between southeastern Australia and Europe via the Australian Overland Telegraph Line.

The GAB became an important water supply for cattle stations, irrigation, and livestock and domestic usage, and is still vital for rural Australia. To tap it, bores are sunk down to a suitable rock layer, where up, mostly without pumping.

The discovery and use of this water allowed vast areas of land to be opened up away from rivers in inland New South Wales, Queensland, and South Australia, making it available for pastoral use.

Sadly, water extraction from the GAB became a mining operation, with recharge rates now much lower than the current rate of extraction rates. In 1915, 1500 bores provided 2000 megalitres of water per day, but by 2010 the total output had dropped to 1500ML per day.

than 9000 that required pumps to lift the water. Many bores were unregulated or abandoned, resulting in considerable waste.

Beginning in the 1950s, government regulation required that all new bores be fitted with headworks to control flows, and each of the states began upgrades to control bores and convert drains to piped delivery systems.

Even so, By the late 1990s more than 1,500 artesian bores continued to flow into more than 34,000km of open bore drains as a result of inadequate technology.

Although these programs resulted in 650 flowing bores being controlled and a 126,000 Ml/yr saving of water, the Basin-wide stakeholder perspective was that these rehabilitation programs were uncoordinated and underinvested.

A basin-wide coordinated approach to bore rehabilitation was proposed as part of the Great Artesian Basin Strategic Management Plan 2000, and resulted in the development of the Great Artesian Basin Sustainability Initiative (GABSI), delivered in partnership by the Federal and relevant State governments to provide funding support to repair uncontrolled bores.

GABSI has been fundamental in the restoration and repair of the uncontrolled bores and bore drains since 1999 and has made a successful contribution toward the improvement in pressure within Great Artesian Basin springs and the sustainable management of water resources within the Basin.

GABSI came to an end on 30 June 2017 after 17 years with over $124 million invested by the Australian Government, resulting in more than 750 bores being upgraded; 21,390 km of bore drains being decommissioned; 31,552 km of efficient pipe drains being installed; and more than 250 GL of water savings per year.

NSW participation In a recent press release, Member for Barwon Kevin Humphries, MP, announced the NSW Government would allocate $13 million to continue with GABSI. Mr Humphries said there are still 1400 free flowing bores across NSW which need to be rehabilitated in order to restore pressure.

“Restoring pressure to the GAB is vital to ensuring we have a healthy environment and our farmers have access to water,” he said.

The money will go towards capping free-flowing bores and installing efficient water supply

infrastructure such as pipes, tanks and troughs in partnership with water users for an additional four years.

“Over the next four years rehabilitating groundwater pressure will increase drought resilience as well as feed natural springs which support ecosystems,” Mr Humphries said.

Minister for Regional Water, Niall Blair, MP, said: “Over the next four years rehabilitating groundwater pressure will increase drought resilience. As surface water availability declines, town water supply and industry will increasingly rely upon groundwater resources,” Mr Blair said.

So where is all this leading?

The Australian Government had, up until June last year, invested almost $125m in this worthwhile and commendable project, with proven savings in water and improvements in efficiency. We can only hope that the work goes on, even if at a slower pace. $125 million – keep that in mind.

But it has been too late for many of the mound springs, many of which have dried up due to the drop in water pressure, probably resulting in the extinction of several species.

That’s bad enough in itself, but lets look at it purely from the same perspective that governments these days do – cost effectiveness, that famous bottom line they’re so fond of mentioning whenever they want to give some program the chop.

Under the Roxby Downs (Indenture Ratification) Act 1982, SA’s Olympic Dam mine is allowed to take up to 42,000,000 litres of

water from the GAB every day.

The mine commenced operations in 1988 and is expected to continue until about 2060.

Then there’s the proposed Adani Mine in Qld. Figures given by both sides in the for and against arguments are so rubbery that it is hard to get any definite sense of water use.

However, Adani has applied for a 12.5 GL a year licence (12.5 billion litres) to pump from the Balyano River and that licence will apparently stand for a minimum 60 years on the current – but still uncertain – proposed life of the mine.

This must have a drastic affect on the water table for many kilometres around. To add to that will be the huge amount of water taken when the pits and underground shafts are dewatered.

The effect on the GAB has been little studied and is probably unknown, if all the truth be told.

The increase in mining activity – and that of fracking/CSG operations – has added enormously to the uptake of water from the GAB as has the drilling of new bores to supplement town water supplies throughout the Murray Darling Basin and elsewhere as climate change begins to bite.

Taking all this into account, it seems a little odd that a commendable scheme funded by governments with public moneys and aimed at preserving the priceless resource that is the GAB is being undermined by those same governments throwing it away elsewhere.

I was literally in tears last week as I watched the unfolding of those terrible events in Christchurch. I love New Zealand – I lived there for 10 years in my younger days – and still have many dear friends there including in Christchurch. I got to chatting about it to Ruby and Doreen and we remembered a trip we made to Singapore a few years back.

We were there during the Moon Festival when the city is festooned with decorations and bursting with revellers of the many ethnicities and faiths that are packed tightly together in that tiny country.

What struck us were the signs you saw everywhere – on buses, in trains and on walls – with a sponsor’s name and a message: The Indian Chamber of Commerce supports racial harmony. The Kwai Pak Tong says let’s work together in peace. I made the names up of course, but you get the drift.

Surely we could do something like that here?

MOLONG BOWLS Congratulations to this years Club Champion Kevin Beatty and to runner up Ian Gosper.

The new mayor played the old mayor to a packed house last Saturday with Kevin running out the winner 31 to something.

The Under 7's Molong Walla Rugby team training with Coach Brett Murdoch at the Rec. last week. Keen and willing to learn these young ones are as 'keen as mustard'. Coach, Brett Murdoch, was raised and schooled in Molong - played with the Molong Rugby Union teams (1989-91 and 1995). Following a very successful career in the Army - Brett has returned to Molong, bought a home and is now putting something back into the town who helped to raise him. Whilst Brett does not own any of the children in the U7's he said to the Express "it is my turn to put something back in (to the town)". Welcome Home Brett.

MOLONG GOLF Next Wednesday golf will be a 9 hole Par 8.00am for an 8.30 tee off followed by lunch at 12.30.

Two reminders, one it is Cumnock's Open Day this Saturday 23rd. and the other is there is a Vet's day on Monday 25th, where we will be providing Morning Tea and Lunch. ************************ Manildra Sand Green Championships were held last Saturday and Sunday.

Play was discontinued for about 2 hours on Saturday afternoon due to lightning strikes (not good if you have a golf stick in your hand).

The shotgun was fired at 3.15 p.m. to start again.

We got through the 16 holes by 7.30 p.m.

Molong was represented by 5 players

John Wright, Mark Oates, the Phantom Walker (who got on the card quite frequently), Jed Fulwood (got an eagle), and Scott Wright. All players played well with a couple of players getting some really big points for birdies or eagles.

Didn't finish in the top 10 but we were heading that way. Congratulations to those players and to Manildra for hosting a great event.

This Saturday is the Cumnock Opening Day - T-off 12.30 to 1.00 p.m.

Following Day - Molong Monthly Mug and on Monday T-Off 8.30 a.m. to 9 will be the Veterans 18 hole event with a light luncheon after.

Numbers in the yarding’s are increasing with the effect of the dry conditions over both cattle and sheep. For those how are starting to implement there destocking or number reductions, it might be a good time to make a trip to your local sale yards to compare your stock with what’s on offer, this will also give you a fair idea of values in your stock to help make those tuff decisions.

Lamb numbers increased with agents yarding 8200 Sheep numbers increased with agents yarding 4450 The larger offering produced a fair quality yarding, with a good selection of trade lambs along with good numbers to suit the restocker. Heavy weight lambs were in a limited supply, crossbred ewes made up the bulk of the mutton with only a few merinos.

Light weight lambs to the processors were $3 cheaper, while trade lambs were firm to $4 dearer, lambs to restockers were firm, and heavy lambs were $2 cheaper.

Mutton were $3 to $5 dearer, mutton worked out to be 340 to 405c/kg cwt.

Numbers decreased by 590 with agents yarding 1910. Cows made up the bulk of the yarding as the offload continues, along with well finished trade cattle and grown steers. Ideal feeder cattle were also well supplied, as were young cattle for restockers.

Young cattle to the trade were 20c dearer, feeder steers and heifers were 35c to 40c cheaper. Young restocker cattle were 60c dearer, and grown steers & heifers 20c dearer. Cows were 25c to 45c dearer.
