Fabulous Art in Bank Street Molong artist, Kerri Ambler, held the first of a series of photographic exhibitions at the new Bank Street Pop-Up Gallery last Friday night.

The exhibition includes portraits of local residents - together with their thoughts on the art of ageing and the contribution older people bring to their communities.

"Just because they are older, and live in a small town, does not in any way mean they have small stories" said Kerri who was chosen for the NSW Government funded program from a strong field of professional applicants.

"The exhibition can be viewed in the delightful front windows of one of Molong's iconic buildings traditionally known as the Express building" said Kerri.

Featuring in the current group of photographs are Stewart Caldwell, Jim Walker, Stewart Lee, Tim Middleton, Ann Wright and Margaret Adams, Arthur Stanley, Helen Armstrong and Michelle Davies.

Take a look at the exhibition, the accompanying slide show with other local residents photographs and thoughts on ageing ... including Cobber Webb, Carmen Neill and others. These exhibits are still on tour. See P8 & 9.

2021? Where’s the crystal ball?

Finding a spiritual woman in a mystical room staring into a crystal ball may be the only option to discover what the year 2021 will bring. Particularly, for comunities where the meaning of the word ‘change’ has throughout time, for some, brought forward a fear factor which generally accompanies the ‘unknown’. The same fear factor (fear of change) that for decades has managed to stop the progress of the towns and villages of Cabonne Country.

Today, that fear has been overcome due to the pandemic of 2020. A time which will undoubtedly be written into the local history books where ‘change’ and fear of the unknown was forced onto our everyday lives to accept, work with, solve and move ahead.

Congratulations! We did it ... And, we can do it again ... We survived 2020 and the challenges thrown at us - and we can survive the continuation of some of these challenges in the year 2021 and beyond.

2020 in Cabonne Country saw small business having to close their doors, social distancing enforced, schools closed, churches closed, births-deaths-marriages conducted in a different way, and lockdowns to protect our senior residents living at home, nursing homes and hospitals. Local sporting and entertainment events were cancelled. There were many changes we had to live with. We did it!

What Changed? Busy lives became less tiring - with more time at home and in our gardens, more time to think, more time with family, reading, relaxing ... more time to consider our own lives, those around us, and ideas for our communities to advance to a better future.

Handwashing alone, hand sanitising, social distancing, writing our names in cafe, shop, business etc is still a requirement.

Through this kind of change to our everyday health and hygiene most of us discovered that our annual winter cold and flu did not

MPS (Molong Hospital) Manager, Deb. Kenna, a loyal fan of Elvis, decorated her office wall for Christmas (and the King’s birthday) with Elvis, Elvis ... and more Elvis ... Much to the delight of her team, patients and their families. The Hospital Auxiliary added a special feature to one of the newly refurbed Palliative Care rooms in recognition of one of Deb’s passions ... an Elvis box seat.

“Whatever the patient wants in their special palliative care room we can provide” said Deb. If they don’t like Elvis - we can add whatever it is they like to be surrounded by.

Maybe photos or paintings of horses, dogs,

happen. Adding extra walking to our gym free days and being forced to shop less, rely on what is in the pantry more, and using our home ovens more did not hurt us a bit.

Making sure that our food outlets survived during the 2020 shutdown via take-away sales became important to the majority of residents. We demonstrated our loyalty to our town and villages.

2021 - we might not be able to plan for the future whilst we await the vaccine - and latest health research and government decision making on how to manage COVID-19. But as a community we have learnt that we can change to whatever is needed of us - e.g. ...

1. Resilience - We are now more open to change and in knowing that the virus may force further changes in 2021 on how we live in our communities. The rural tradition that we have grown with has emerged again.

We remember the Aussie saying “when the going gets tough ... the tough get going”.

Yes, we did and became a region of stronger communities.

2. We are spending more money ‘local’ because COVID has encouraged us to better value and respect our local small businesses and their survival.

3. Whilst we are missing family and friends who live in other locations - we are seeing to each other better - checking on each other supporting each other better.

4. Change. Whilst we have been forced into ‘change’ in the way we live in our communities, shop, entertain, work and operate our businesses - we have learnt more about taking responsibility for self, respecting what we have more, living together better as a community, and becoming more mindful and accepting of the word ‘change’.

We are now ready to take what comes in 2021 and realise that as a community that once dreaded word ‘change’ is not to be feared ... but to be worked with to buid stronger communities.

Thank-You To all those who cared for and made ELSPETH comfortable during her time of sickness.

Please accept this as my personal thank-you and sincere gratitude for all that was done for her.

Molong Hospital (MPS)

It’s all about patient quality care and family sharing time together in a home environment

by Rozzi Smith “Whatever the patient needs are ... we do our best to provide” said Deb. Kenna, the dynamic Hospital Manager of the Molong Hospital (MPS) who with the Hospital Auxiliary members recently provided the Express with a tour of the newly refurbished palliative care suites.

“Exceptional” we said as we toured bright, happy and stylish suites with modern bathrooms.

With an enormous amount of fundraising by the Molong Hospital Auxiliary members (past and present) and donations from local business and patient/family members - the MPS now has two of the most stunning suites to meet the important clinical, social and care needs of palliative care patients and their families.

Bright, colourful, modern - these once very tired and rather depressing rooms now provide a new style of decor to provide a welcoming and warm feeling, home-style environment for the patients and their families.

“Whilst a number of former and present hospital auxiliary members and MPS team members have contributed to the fantastic improvements, additions/renovations and restyling of this town’s iconic ‘care building on the hill’ - praise must also go to one of the longtime MPS team members - the inspirational Julie James - a modest woman who claims ‘no fame’.

A chirpy, hard-working, multi-skilled delightful woman, Julie appears in various roles at the MPS - and makes a difference as a member of the team - with patients - their families and care delivery.

Julie supports the amazing initiatives of the management team - Deb Kenna, Shelley Moore, the MPS team, the Hospital Auxiliary ... not MPS Manager, Deborah forgetting long-time nursing manager Rosie Kenna writes Blowes!

“During the redevelopment of the The MPS keeps getting better ... and better! hospital in 2016/17 the Palliative Care rooms were given a coat of paint only.

This is where the project for the Auxiliary began - a small group of wonderful people with big hearts.

Along with donations received they sold raffle tickets in all kinds of weather, held a trivia night and catered for functions to achieve the end goal.

The aim of the refurbishment is to provide a comfortable home like environment for Palliative patients rather than only a clinical setting. A special place where family members and carers can spend time and/ or stay overnight together. Family members have easy access to overnight accommodtion, a carers room for tea, coffee etc. or just to have a break for a few minutes.

These rooms are multi use and not restricted in use. They are for all patients and at some point we will all need our hospital.

We have been fortunate to have (Above) Proud of their achievements in redesigning/refurbing the Palliative Care Suites at the support and donations provided the MPS (l to r) Nic. Christine Weston completes three years as Chairman of Regional Development Australia (RDA) Central West

The dynamic Christine Weston of Cumnock has announced that she will be standing down after three years of chairing the Regional Development Australia (RDA) Central West team.

During Christine's term a number of new initiatives have been created by the Central West RDA team - including Ten4Ten Leadership Dialogue; STEM Industry School Partnership (SISP); Business Leaders Breakfast Series; Backing Business Forum; and work in the Skilled Migration space as well as numerous capacity building events and workshops, RDA has demonstrated its ability to deliver on some great outcomes for the Central West.

Ruth Fagan, has been appointed as the organisation’s new Chair which was recently announced by the Assistant Minister for Regional Development and Territories, Hon. Nola Marino MP. , welcomed the new appointment.

“I am pleased to announce the

appointment of Ruth Fagan to 30 June 2025,” said Minister Marino.

“Mrs Fagan will lead RDA Central West under a refreshed Charter that focuses the role on driving investment and local procurement opportunities and through this, creating jobs and economic growth for our regions.

“I look forward to working with Mrs Fagan and the RDA Central West members and staff over the coming years and encourage the community to reach out to their RDA to discuss how it can help business succeed.”

“Ms Weston has provided strong leadership for RDA Central West during her time as Chair, and successfully steered the organisation through the challenges of 2020,” said Mrs Fagan.

“She has provided great support for the local business community and future economic development and I am pleased to be continuing this important work for our region.

“RDA Central West covers the 11 local government areas (LGA’s) of Bathurst, Blayney, Cabonne, Cowra, Forbes, Lachlan, Lithgow, Oberon, Orange, Parkes and Weddin and represents more than 180,000 people.

Mrs Fagan has been a resident of Cowra for 37 years, and has served on the Cowra Shire as a Councillor since 2004.

Mrs Fagan, who trained as journalist, has also been involved in a range of industries including tourism, agriculture, small business and cultural planning.

She is a member of various local committees, holds a Bachelor of Business Studies from Charles Sturt University, is the Director of a marketing business and the Business Development Manager and partner of a real estate agency in Cowra.

A fun-filled day is on the cards for Australia Day 2021

Aussie barbecues, family fun and award presentations will be the feature of Australia Day in Cabonne Shire on 26 January 2021.

A full day of COVID-safe celebrations is planned for Tuesday 26 January, starting at 8am with breakfasts in several villages and wrapping up with pool parties and dinner in the evening.

Cabonne’s Australia Day ambassador Susie Elelman, an accomplished multimedia broadcaster, will participate in ceremonies at Borenore, Cudal, Manildra and Yeoval, where Citizens of the Year, Young Citizens of the Year and Community Groups of the Year will be announced.

Ms Elelman will begin a busy Australia Day at 10am in Borenore, where there will be a sausage sizzle and awards ceremony, before heading to Cudal for their award presentation and village gatherings. Ms Elelman will then have an afternoon in

Manildra at their pool party, awards and Sutton relay before finishing the day in Yeoval with an evening meal and awards.

Ms Elelman will be accompanied

by Cabonne’s Australia Day Youth Ambassador Beau McKenzie, and Mayor Kevin Beatty.

Australia Day will also be celebrated in Canowindra, Cargo, Cumnock, Eugowra, Molong and Mullion Creek, where an assortment of guest speakers, award presentations, competitions and barbecues will showcase the vibrance of the Cabonne shire.

These celebrations across the shire will strive to create the same community atmosphere as previous years, while following government guidelines and maintaining a high level of safety.

2021 Australian of the Year Who’s in the running for National Awards?

Awards to be announced 25 January 2021

Health leaders, bushfire heroes, pandemic helpers, scientists, environmental guardians, human rights advocates and Indigenous leaders are among the inspiring Australians now in the running for the 2021 Australian of the Year Awards to be announced on the evening of 25 January 2021.

Public nominations for the 2021 Australian of the Year Awards closed in July 2020. State and territory nominees were selected from these public submissions and recipients then announced during October and November 2020. These state and territory award recipients are now the national finalists.

There are 33 finalists across four award categories: • 2021 Australian of the Year • 2021 Senior Australian of the Year • 2021 Young Australian of the Year • 2021 Australia’s Local Hero National Australia Day Council CEO, Ms Karlie Brand, said the national finalists reflected the many faces of Australian society and the many ways in which many Australians contributed in times of crisis.

“The past year has been particularly challenging and many of the finalists have shown incredible leadership or stepped up to help in extraordinary ways,” said Ms Brand.

“At the same time, ongoing social issues and challenges continue. Many of the award finalists are champions of causes and issues which require longterm dedication and passion.

“These are the people who make our nation and our communities great – real people doing important work and showing leadership when it’s needed most.”

Councils and community organisations in Calare called on to apply for $200 million in regional grants

Cabonne Council will be ready for the latest round of the Australian Government’s Building Better Regions Fund now open for applications.

Federal Member for Calare, Andrew Gee, said there is total of $200 million in Round 5, including $100 million for community infrastructure projects, and $100 million specifically for tourism related infrastructure, in an aim to provide targeted support for this sector in the context of COVID-19.

“This funding will create jobs and drive economic growth in our regional communities particularly as we get back on our feet after drought, bushfires and COVID-19”, Mr Gee said.

Mr Gee welcomed the release of guidelines for Round 5 of the Building Better Regions Fund (BBRF) and urged communities and local government to take advantage of the fund and get local projects off the ground.

At its meeting in December 2020 Cabonne Council authorised preparation of submissions for i. Canowindra Town Centre Improvement Project valued at approximately $2m ii. Molong Main Street Improvement Project valued at approximately $2m Development of a detailed design for the Molong Main Street project will proceed during the funding assessment period be ready to commence within 12 weeks of execution of a funding deed (if successful).

Funding under the Infrastructure Projects Stream provides grants from $20,000 to $10 million on a dollar-for-dollar basis, with the applicant to provide 50 per cent or more of the project costs.

These projects are considered ready to be progressed toward submission because: • significant community consultation has

been undertaken through the enquiry-by-design process • Projects have been publicly displayed and open to community feedback several times • Concept design has been completed • Preliminary costs have been estimated • Public support has been established • Funding has been secured for the procurement of business cases to support these projects The estimated cost of all works proposed under the town centre improvement initiative is almost $11m. In the interests of deliverability, it is proposed to extract a package of works for each town valued at approximately $2m, focusing primarily on the Main Street portion of the plans.

Recently Mr Gee visited the Education & Information Centre at the Australian National Field Days site at Borenore. The Orange Field Days Co-op secured a $308,175 grant through Round 3 of Building Better Regions Fund to help build the centre. The project is 10 years in the making and weather permitting, is on track to finish at the end of April this year.

“The construction of this education centre will not only support agriculture but ensure more groups use the Australian National Field Days site, which in turn helps secure the long term sustainability of the much-loved and iconic Field Days. It’s a great example of the power of this grants program,” Mr Gee said.

The site will be able to host online auctions, national conferences and school events. The Centre includes kitchen facilities, a conference room and a media room. The total project cost was approximately $650,000. The Orange Field Days Co-op matched the Australian Government funding of $308,175, and the State Government contributed the balance.

Driver Reviver Rest Stops to Receive $7.3 Million in Grants

$7.3 million in grant funding is now available under Round 2 of the Driver Reviver Upgrade Program. The funding will allow existing Driver Reviver locations nationwide to upgrade amenities and install new equipment.

The National Road Transport Association (NatRoad) CEO Warren Clark said: “This is a welcome investment in rest stops across the country. In one of our latest submissions to the review of the Heavy Vehicle National Law, we emphasised that the basic issue of the provision of proper rest areas had been given insufficient priority as a vital component of fatigue management. This financial commitment to upgrading current Driver Reviver rest stops is a step in the right direction.

A US study showing that fatigue related crashes dramatically increase when rest stops are more than 32km away from the vehicle at the time of the accident shows the importance of rest areas as part of a road safety strategy directed at fatigue management. In Round 2 of funding Driver Reviver, owners can apply for grants to make improvements to shelters, picnic tables, power and water facilities, barbecues, parking, lighting and equipment. Priority will be given to restoring Driver Reviver sites affected by the horrific bushfires of 2019 and 2020. Facilities at rest stops are of vital importance.

A pleasant summer’s night welcomed local art enthusiasts to the new Pop-Up Gallery in Bank Street to view Molong artist, Kerrie Ambler’s photographic exhibition.

The Art of Ageing

Initiated by the Department for Communities and Justice (formerly FACS) in 2017, The Art of Ageing is a photographic exhibition that celebrates the value, experience and contribution older people bring to their communities. The stories of these accomplished and unconventional lives, set out to challenge the out-dated perceptions and negative stereotyping of ageing.

Each photograph is accompanied by a short story highlighting the subject's experiences and reflections on ageing.

The many diverse individuals interviewed for this exhibition have carved out an interesting life for themselves. Just because they are older, and live in a small town, does not in any way mean they have small stories. Most of them continue to contribute to their community, as creative, active, interested, vibrant, passionate parties.

These images (the first round of the exhibition) have been on tour for the

past 2 years, visiting regional galleries across NSW. Kerri Amblerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s images of people from Molong, have been gifted back to the community and will finally be displayed at home for the first time at 40 Bank Street Pop Up Gallery. Opening Friday 15th January, 5pm, the exhibition will run for 6 weeks.

Featured individuals: Stewart Caldwell, Jim Walker, Stewart Lee, Tim (The Butcher) Middleton, Ann Wright and Margaret Adams (sadly, now passed), Arthur Stanley, Helen Armstrong and Michelle Davies.

The second round are currently touring and will, with luck, also come back to Molong end of 2022.

FANCY DAMPER (Above) Ingredients: (Damper mix) 3 cups self raising flour 3/4 cup water or milk 80g butter Salt and pepper (Damper extras) 2 rashes bacon 1 onion Crushed garlic Salt and pepper Rosemary Oregano Dash of worcestershire sauce

(Damper filling) Mozzarella cheese Instructions Prepare damper mix with the self raising flour, water/milk, butter, and salt and pepper.

In pan, fry up ingredients in damper extras list, lightly cooked through. Mix what is in the fry pan in with the damper dough mix.

Knead the dough.

Put the mozzarella cheese in the centre and mold the dough around. Put in aluminium foil over campfire or in oven (180⁰C) for approximately 45 minutes.

TRADITIONAL BUSH DAMPER (Feeds 15 people or 3 hungry campers).

4 cups (500g) self-raising flour 1 teaspoon salt 20g butter, softened 1 cup (250ml) milk 1/2 cup (125ml) water Preheat oven to 220 degrees C. Grease a baking tray.

In a large bowl, stir together the flour and the salt. With your hands, rub in butter.

Make a well in the centre of the flour mixture and pour in the milk and water. Stir until the dough comes together. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and form into a round loaf 20cm across. Place the loaf onto the prepared tray and, using a sharp knife, cut a cross in the top.

Bake for 25 minutes in the preheated oven, then lower the temperature to 180 degrees C and continue to bake for an additional 5 to 10 minutes.

The loaf should be golden brown and the bottom should sound hollow when tapped.

We will be providing post game eats (Gravy beef roll with chips or Savoury mince pie with chips). $10 per head + $3 including the meal.

Molong Golf Happy New Year to all golfers and readers and welcome back to the Molong Express.

On Sunday 3rd we had 16 play in the comp. and in a group out for a hit. Confusing start with latecomers. Speed limit on carts may be enforced because of the late starters. Late finisherss nearly missed out on a BBQ. Winners were Ged with a four over par and runner-up was Bob. Sunday 10th: We had 18 players out for a hit on a lovely morning for golf. Winners were Paul, runner-up was Ged. Thanks Drew for doing all the mowing and Mark for raking the greens.

Sunday 17th: We had 16 players

for a hit at Royal Molong. We played a 3 Person Ambrose. The course is in great shape to play on thanks to our volunteers and Dave.

Winners were Troy, Kyle, Darren and Mark. Congratulations to Kyle for some great drives.

Next Sunday a stroke event teeoff 8.30 for 9.00 a.m. The course will be open for any golfers on Tuesday, Australia Day if interested in a game.

The Top Pub Fishing Club had a great family weekend catching fish from the Lachlan River at Forbes. (Above) Well done to Nicola Hanrahan, Marlee Mills and Larson Harvey who caught these good size fish. All three and other members are preparing for the forthcoming annual family event ... Jake’s Carp Muster Competition held in memory of Jake Whiting - a delightful young Molong resident who lost his young life in a tragic accident. Date/details to be advised in the Express.
