This changes everything $5m for for “new library, community hall and learning centre” Will Cabonne take an opportunity for the ages?

The confirmation in Tuesdays State Budget that Cabonne will receive $5 million for a new library, community hall and learning centre is a far cry from the original proposal to relocate the Molong Library from the Railway station to a refurbished ex meeting room next to the current Community Hall in Bank Street.

The government has lived up to its election promise, originally fostered by former MLC Ric Colless who retired at the last election. Ric will be proud.

Cabonne Council can now get on with preparing an architectural brief which will describe the new building’s components which can now include a modern library, community meeting rooms and a contemporary multi purpose community hall able to be used for anything from weddings, dances, conferences and entertainment

attractions - not to mention a new home for the venerable Molong Players’ popular annual show.

Planning will no doubt proceed by reference to other similar facilities recently completed. Community consultation will ensue.

All that is needed now is to select a designer who can give the project some architectural flair. We need Australia’s next Harry Seidler.

Molong is justly proud of its Bank St precinct with its sprinkling of lovely heritage buildings.

The opportunity should now be taken by this generation to add its own piece of future heritage. Just any old building will not do.

Warming up the night at the Molong Bowlo Bonfire Children and adults were treated to a special family night at the Molong Bowling Club last Saturday night to celebrate what was once a local tradition - a Bonfire. Whilst pet owners are understandably relieved that loud double banger crackers, mis-directed ‘wooshers’ and sky rockets are no longer an issue - and relieved parents and medicos are no longer concerned about burnt fingers and lost eyes - there still remains the mesmerising effect when a safe fire of fallen tree limbs, melting gum leaves, toasted marshmallows, bodies snuggled up in warm coats, BBQ’d snags ... and community time come together. A perfect meeting place.

Cowra / Canowindra

The very best produce and wine from the Cowra and Canowindra region will be showcased at the Crowne Plaza Terrigal Pacific at the inaugural ‘Cowra on the Coast’ Food and Wine Festival.

The Canowindra News reports the day long event, to be held on Saturday, July 6, will be partnered by Cowra Tourism and the Cowra Wine Region.

The festival has been designed as a free, family-friendly food and wine event during the day.

Almost three months since Big W announced it would close 30 stores nationally, staff in six Central West stores remain in limbo.

The Canowindra News reports the announcement might have come on April 1, but it was far from an April Fool’s joke with the retail giant announcing expected losses of $80-$100 million this financial year.

Big W say these losses will force the closure of 30 stores during the next three years.

There are six Big W stores in the Central West Bathurst, Dubbo, Mudgee, Orange, Parkes and Young and staff at these stores are still yet to be told of their future and that of the store.

PROHIBITED drugs and weapons were among the items seized by police during a raid on Tuesday as part

of their investigations into a spate of break and enters across the Central West.

The Blayney Chronicle reports officers from the Central West Proactive Investigation Team started an investigation in May into break and enters which targeted 13 locations in the Chifley and Central West Police Districts.

On Tuesday, police executed a search warrant on a home in Nyrang Street, Orange where they seized a number of items they will alleged were the proceeds of crime.

Police also seized cannabis, cash, prohibited weapons and ammunition.

A 35-year-old woman is assisting police as investigations continue into the matter.

Bathurst

THE start of Bathurst’s second daily rail service to Sydney has been fast-tracked to the spring after money was made available in the NSW Budget on Tuesday.

The Western Advocate reports the Bullet 2.0, an election promise from Bathurst MP Paul Toole, was due to start in early 2020 but will now be up and running well before the end of the year.

While timetable details are yet to be finalised, Bullet 2.0 will depart Bathurst around 7.30am each weekday and return about 7pm. It will also run on weekends, with stops planned at Tarana and Rydal.

Mr Toole said the new hours would be attractive to many commuters.

SERIOUS discussions about changing the trigger point for level four restrictions are expected to occur within the next four weeks.

Bathurst Regional Council held a working party last week to discuss the current water situation for the local government area.

Councillor Monica Morse said that, at the meeting, she and her colleagues sat through a “very, very good presentation” by director of Engineering Services, Darren Sturgiss, about the state of the dam and Macquarie River.

Mr Sturgiss also presented councillors with forecasts for what levels could look like in a number of situations, such as if there is no significant rain in winter and the effect if higher level restrictions were imposed.

It’s been 50 years since the Parkes Radio Telescope helped send images of man’s first steps on the lunar surface around the world and the CSIRO are planning to celebrate in style.

Open days at the observatory are planned for the weekend of July 20 and 21 and all are invited.

CSIRO Parkes Radio Observatory Operations Scientist John Sarkissian OAM said staff are looking forward to the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing.

What a Team, Pink Markets & Disc Golf Championships for Molong in October Molong to turn “PINK”

Whilst it is only a week since the last Market day in Molong - the team at MAG already have their heads down working on the next one for Labour Day, Monday 7th October.

According to Markets Coordinator Marj Bollinger, “we seem to keep saying it every time that this one was bigger and better than the last and thanks to the many helping hands, support from stallholders and patrons that was surely the case again on 10th June.

That brings us to where to from here to keep the momentum happening for Molong.

The good news from last Thursday’s meeting is that MAG has registered with the McGrath Foundation to ‘Turn Molong Pink’ from about 27 September where we will be hoping that all of Bank Street businesses will come on board and ‘Pink Up Molong’ leading on to a huge Pink long weekend.

MAG has teamed up with Kevin Costa President of Central West Disc Golf which has secured the NSW Disc Golf Championship Titles at Molong Golf course on the long weekend Saturday & Sunday 5th & 6th October 2019. It was mutually agreed to include the Disc Golf Titles and Markets to jointly promote both as Pink events in Molong.

Kevin is seeking sponsorship from locals to help provide the equipment necessary to make the NSW Championships a success and cement Molong as an important venue for Disc Golf in Australia.

We have suggested that Glenn McGrath join us at the Molong Markets to accept the donations from Molong to the McGrath Foundation.” Marj said.

Don’t despair - the toilets are still available in Bank Street but in a temporary and easy to use style whilst contractors are renovating the permanent ones. Safe to use, the two toilets - the one on the left for men - the one on the right for women - will be in place whilst the renovations are being carried out over the next 6 weeks.

Molong and district residents, travellers and tourists are grateful to Cabonne Council for providing the funding for the much needed toilet renovation.

$3,000 Arts Funding Seize the opportunity!

Arts OutWest is encouraging local groups to apply for the 2020 round of Country Arts Support Program funding.

The State Government’s annual Country Arts Support Program (CASP) provides small grants to arts and community organisations in regional NSW to run their own local arts projects.

Applications for 2020 funding close Monday 29 July 2019.

“CASP funds are a valuable way to kick start exciting local, on-theground arts projects,” Arts OutWest executive director Tracey Callinan said, “This funding program is about giving regional people access to a diverse range of arts - activities that are made for and by the local community.”

CASP grants of up to $3000 are available and are primarily to cover professional artist’s fees, travel and accommodation.

Projects could include (but are not limited to) workshops, arts activities as part of community festivals or events, artist-inresidence programs, public art and design projects, performances, community seminars and forums, exhibitions or other local arts initiatives.

The funding is open to all incorporated associations, not just those focused on the arts.

Unincorporated groups or

collectives of artists are allowed to find a local organisation to auspice their funding. Likewise if an individual artist has a project in mind they can team up with a local group.

There were six projects funded in the Central West region through CASP in 2019: a performance by the Allegri Singers; a mural at Bathurst Seymour Centre; a sketchbook library in Forbes; a youth drama program in Condobolin; and creative poetry workshops in schools in Orange. Landcare connecting people and biodiversity habitats in our community Sally Kirby Central Tablelands Landcare

Central Tablelands Landcare Group is a Landcare Network that includes the towns of Orange, Bathurst, Molong, Blayney, and all the surrounding localities.

We are committed to improving our environment by helping communities with natural resource management and sustainable farming practices. Our members have consistently identified revegetation as a high priority since we first began surveying them in 2012. We have been building our expertise and ability to deliver successful reveg projects ever since.

Over the last seven years we have been working with landholders to replace native vegetation in stock excluded areas. This has not only improved the biodiversity on these properties, but has raised community awareness of the need for revegetation, the need to have connections or linkages between old remnant vegetation and newly planted areas, and highlighted the social benefits of being part of a Landcare network.

Our most recent project Stepping Stones through our Endangered Grassy Woodlands has been funded by the NSW Government’s

Environmental Trust and resulted in over 8000 native trees and shrubs revegetating 20 hectares of grassy white box woodland in our region.

We engaged 11 landholders in this project and helped them to identify areas on their property that could benefit from restoring vegetation.

Local famer Rob Lee, fenced five hectares of his property at Larras Lee to enhance biodiversity.

Rob chose this site to subdivide two of his larger paddocks, and provide a wind break to shelter stock from the prevailing westerly winds. The added bonus, according to Rob, is that this Stepping Stones site connects another site completed in 2015 with the Eurimbla Landcare Group. His long term plan is to connect his revegetation areas to a small range that runs through to the Killanbutta Wildlife Corridor.

One of the greatest achievements of Central Tablelands Landcare Group in recent years has been the establishment of our Community Nursery situated at the Ag Research Station, Bathurst. Our nursery manager, Sue Wakefield is able to source seed from our local environment

and grow species suited to our local conditions for our projects. Participants in our Environmental Trust projects have the benefit of Sue’s expertise in species selection, advice in site preparation and ongoing management. We reimburse project participants for fencing materials and provide plants grown in our nursery, along with weed mats, sticks and tree guards.

Central Tablelands Landcare Group has been successful in winning Environmental Trust funding for two more exciting projects. We have 12 landholders already signed up for our Planned Woodlands project, which will see 15 hectares of land returned to native vegetation as part of an overall property biodiversity plan.

Our latest project, Rocky Outcrops, aims to engage 18 landholders in our region who are willing to enhance and protect important habitat for reptiles in our region. We will be holding an information day about Rocky Outcrops and our project on Friday 2nd August in Orange.

“There is no doubt revegetation projects are worthwhile for the biodiversity benefits and the improvement in landscape function and natural amenity,” says Sally Kirby, Landcare Officer with

Central Tablelands Landcare. “However, in my opinion it is the social connections our project participants make, combined with the experience of learning about habitat restoration and actually making a difference on their property that is the biggest benefit. Landcare is about working with people to improve our natural capital.”

Revegetation projects can seem overwhelming in the beginning, especially if the results are not immediately apparent. That is why we encourage all our participants to keep photographic records so they can see the impact they are having.

I have been reading Frank Povah's column with interest and would like to respond to his recent comments on Politics and Religion.

Mr. Leisk made a good effort, last week, but seems to get himself stuck in a rut. However much he wants to sugar coat the 'hell for eternity' theory, I'm not swallowing it anymore. I have been thinking a lot about this lately as I was told many years ago that I am going to hell, and that if my father ends up there too, it will have been my fault. Hence recent posts on social media condemning people to hell if they don't do or say or think the right things about God have actually had quite an effect on me.

Since our youngest child doesn't really appreciate discussions on weighty issues before breakfast, perhaps I could run these thoughts past you ... and join in the debate.

I have a happy memory of holding my father's hand as a little girl.

I must have been tiny, as his little finger filled my grasp.

I thought He loved me ....

Imagine being written out of His Will, and only finding that out at the end. After he had died.

Is God like that? Are we told all our lives God loves us UNCONDITIONALLY, and then discover when we die that he really doesn't after all?

I am sure He is weeping rivers of tears when He hears what people are doing to His children on church grounds.

It is my understanding that whether we love Him or hate Him, Jesus will be there defending us.

Love conquered Hate.

There. That might do. Enough of me, but before I go, my mother had some funny little sayings as we were growing up.

"Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater" was one. I think that applies here.

Just imagine if we could all wake up to a New World. One that is filled with people with a positive, non-judgemental regard for each other ... That would be Heaven.

Whatever you do when you wake up Mr Povah, be sure to "get out of bed on the right side."

And speaking of the right side, the right side did win I say.

A man in Scotland calls his son in London the day before Christmas Eve and says,“I hate to ruin your day but I have to tell you that your mother and I are divorcing; forty-five years of misery is enough.”

'Dad, what are you talking about?' the son screams.

“We can't stand the sight of each other any longer” the father says.

“We're sick of each other and I'm sick of talking about this, so you call your sister in Leeds and tell her.”

Frantically, the son calls his sister, who explodes on the phone. “Like hell they're getting divorced!” she shouts, “I'll take care of this!”

She calls Scotland immediately, and screams at her father “You are NOT getting divorced. Don't do a single thing until I get there. I'm calling my brother back, and we'll both be there tomorrow.Until then, don't do a thing, DO YOU HEAR ME?” and hangs up.

The old man hangs up his phone and turns to his wife. 'Sorted! They're coming for Christmas - and they're paying their own way.'

Bill wakes up at home with a huge hangover.

He forces himself to open his eyes, and the first thing he sees is a couple of aspirins and a glass of water on the side table.

He sits down and sees his clothing in front of him, all clean and pressed.

Bill looks around the room and sees that it is in a perfect order, spotless, clean.

So's the rest of the house.

He takes the aspirins and notices a note on the table "Honey, breakfast is on the stove, I left early to go shopping. Love you."

So he goes to the kitchen and sure enough there is a hot breakfast and the morning newspaper.

His son is also at the table, eating.

Bill asks, "Son, what happened last night?"

His son says, "Well, you came home after 3 A.M., drunk and delirious.

Broke some furniture, puked in the hallway, and gave yourself a black eye when you stumbled into the door."

Confused, Bill asks, "So, why is everything in order and so clean, and breakfast is on the table waiting for me?"

His son replies, "Oh that! Mom dragged you to the bedroom, and when she tried to take your pants off you said, "Lady leave me alone, I'm married'!"

Kristy Bland Discovers Manildra’s Royal Hotel “Good food comes first, then it’s the beer!”

Amen to that Karl, (photographed right) the Royal’s Head Chef slash licensee slash handyman slash slash.

As with every self-respecting Aussie town, Manildra has its corner pub, a place of respite for workers and wayfarers for almost a century. As too with many an Aussie pub, The Royal as we know it today is a reincarnation, reborn after incineration back in 1925. Perhaps there were a few stray ashes in the old bricks when Karl and Naomi took over the site twelve months ago as the smokiness has transferred onto the Specials menu of 2019.

Say hello to Wildfire, Karl’s whiz bang new meat smoker and the tastiest addition to Kiewa Street since Tim the Butcher’s snags. Wildfire has long been a dude dream for Karl and as far as smokers go, this is no cigarillo. Garra resident Jane MacSmith was the first to sample Karl’s inaugural brisket and can really take claim for this article being born.

“It was bloody delish! You should write a story about the chef.” Cheers, Jane.

Since taking over last year, Karl and Naomi have slowly made their mark on the beloved Royal whilst maintaining the local bar team and suppliers that we expect. Meals are now available every day for lunch and dinner and a menu of takeaway options sustains shift workers at the mill across the road. Keeping it local, the Manildra mill also supplies all the oil that crisps our schnitty’s and old mate Tim the butcher brings the meat.

In between firing unrealistic smoked suggestions (cheese, mashed potato, whiskey) Karl’s way, I did learn that it’s just the brisket and a pork loin that have hit the wood chips so far. If our appetites allow, we can expect The Royal 3.0 to dish up new millennium bangers, pork belly and any of our suggestions that can handle the heat.

It’s a smokin’ great feed (and the beer’s a close second).

Important P.S. Karl will be cooking up a storm this Saturday night with beef ribs smoked to perfection.

by Rozzi Had a great win last week for the Molong and District communities, local business owners and traders, tourism, economic development ... and for the future.

Taking on the community role to chase up a long awaited response from (well, anyone) about the future of the Molong Railway Station I received a response to my enquiry to the NSW State Minister for Transport (Paul Toole MP) from a very helpful woman from the relevant department.

Yes, it is available. Yes, it can happen. Yes, it can be used for commercial purposes. Yes, it can be saved. Not only that ... they are sending info about possible grants to check out for the maintenance works that will need to be carried out.

This news from the ‘outside’ is fabulously good - excellent in fact - and exciting for Molong and district.

But what will happen when the ‘inside’ i.e. community, traders, community groups, Cabonne Council become involved? Frankly, this terrifies me as many a good idea, a good project has been lost in Molong because? There are enough people around me, already, saying “it won’t work”, “it will never happen” AND “I’ll vote against it!” Notably, at a stage where no decisions have been made! Ridiculous.

Then there’s “coffee”. For heavens sake when will this town get it that we can’t let “coffee” and “no more coffee machines in Molong” be the ruler of the advancement of this town! And, the stifler, destroyer (even) of fantastic opportunities sitting in front of this community?

The MRS project is about entrepreneurship, a new model of enterprise. It’s about creativity ... and most of all - the opportunity to draw vehicles off the Mitchell Highway to benefit Molong and district.

Anyway, not one to ever give up - I’ll put on my hard hat, best steel armour (front and back) ... and go for it. Why? Born Robert James Lee Hawke, in Bordertown, South Australia, in 1929, “Bob” or “Hawkie” as he was affectionately known, is said to have been a confident child.

Confident or not, “Hawkie” was Australia’s favourite larrikin, but at the same time was a person comfortable among people from all walks of life.

Graduating from the University of Western Australia, he received a Rhodes Scholarship to England’s Oxford University, where he earned a reputation as an enthusiastic beer drinker – even earning an entry in the Guinness Book of Records – a reputation that followed him throughout his life.

Bob Hawke joined the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) as a research Officer, rising to become responsible for wage arbitration. In 1969, he was elected to the presidency of the ACTU, in which role he achieved great public recognition.

Moving into politics, Bob Hawke was elected as Federal Member for Wills, Victoria, in 1980, and just three years later he led the Labor Party to landslide victory, in the process becoming the country’s 23rd Prime Minister.

He led Labor victory again in 1984, 1987 and 1990, making him the most successful Labor leader in Australia’s history.

During his time as prime minister, Hawke recorded the highest popularity rating ever measured by an Australian opinion poll, reaching 75 percent approval in 1984.

Among the achievements of the Hawke Labor Government are the creation of Medicare and Landcare; the brokering of the Prices and Incomes Accord; the establishment of APEC; floating of the Australian dollar, and the deregulation of the financial sector.

Bob’s government introduced the Family Assistance Scheme, established Advance Australia Fair as the official national anthem, initiated superannuation pension schemes for all workers and oversaw passage of the Australia Act that removed all remaining jurisdiction by the United Kingdom from Australia.

There are those today who criticise some of Labor’s reforms – privatisation of the Commonwealth Bank for example – but it cannot be argued that under Hawke, Labor brought Australia into step with the modern world.

During the recent election, Labor’s promise to abolish “franking credits” is said to have contributed to Labor’s defeat.

“…then they came for the journalists; I don’t know what happened next.”

THE QUOTE ABOVE is from a Twitter post that appeared soon after the Australian Federal Police raids on the home of a News Corp journalist and the headquarters of the ABC. It borrows from the 1946 “confession” of a German Lutheran pastor, Martin Niemöller.

Niemöller referred to the cowardice of German intellectuals and certain clergy (including, by his own repeated admissions, himself) following the Nazi party’s rise to power and the subsequent purging of their chosen targets, group by group.

Many variations have been published in English, but perhaps the best-known are those in poetic form which were circulating by the 1950s.

The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum quotes the following text as one of the many poetic versions of the speech: First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

What intrigues me about this version is that “socialist” has replaced “communist”, the word used in most of the versions I have seen.

But having lived in the USA I know that the mere mention of socialism can cause some people to reach for their guns, and I suspect Hitler’s attempts to remove all traces of Communism through mass murder would probably meet with tacit approval in many quarters.

And therein lies the problem Australia is facing, and though we are not alone, there are fewer safeguards of our democracy – or Constitutional Monarchy – than in many other western countries.

Over the past few years, there have been more than 70 new laws passed, further restricting our imagined rights to go about our own business as citizens of a democracy, largely in the name of protecting us from terrorism.

And they have been allowed to pass through Parliament almost unopposed by members who prefer to hang on to their seats rather than do what they are elected to do – hold the Parliament to account.

Which takes me back to my remarks about the USA replacing communist with socialist – humanitarianism it seems must be tempered with political expediency.

When questions are raised – about the incarceration of asylum seekers for example – the minister or MP being confronted immediately raises the spectre of paedophiles, rapists and murderers lurking in these prisons (for

that is what they are) just waiting for a chance to come to Australia.

When questioned about the numbers of boat turn backs or drownings at sea, the stock response is “I can’t comment on on-water matters”.

Secrecy in the so-called “national interest” has now become a powerful political tool – and national interest now includes not broadcasting material that might embarrass politicians.

When interviewed by Annabel Crabb for ABCTV’s “Insiders” of June 16th last, the Minister for Home Affairs, Hon. Peter Dutton, mp, skipped over questions about two Rwandan citizens allowed into Australia as part of the deal that has allowed asylum seekers incarcerated by our government to enter the United States after they pass the appropriate “character checks”.

The two men in question are alleged to have been implicated in the brutal rape and murder of tourists in Uganda and prior to their arrival here had been held in US jails.

Despite strong evidence against them, they had been acquitted on a technicality. A US judge had ruled he considered them to pose a grave public danger, they had become an embarrasment to the government and so became part of the conditions for the US accepting asylum seekers from Australia.

We would never have known about these men had it not been for journalists reporting on them and if they were too dangerous for the USA, why are they in Australia when Dutton worries about us being assailed by rapists and paedophiles if prisoners were brought here for medical attention?

We will never know, for the concerted attacks made over the years on our right to do so have been eroded to the point where journalists may soon be reluctant to write anything but advertising blurb masquerading as news.

Politicians now stamp “Confidential” on every document that comes into their hands, no matter how innocuous.

This effectively brings things such as the time of an appointment with a barber under the blanket of national security.

As a country we have always been plagued by censorship, sometimes reaching the heights of idiocy.

Norman Lindsay’s books were published and read overseas long before Australians were allowed to read them, material that was pretty mild, even by the standards of the day.

In the mid-20th century, customs officers in Victoria seized a consignment of first-day covers addressed to a stamp collector on the grounds that the stamps qualified as pornographic images. They were in fact reproductions of old masters, Botticelli and the like.

particularly diligent censor, even banning Rudyard Kipling’s Barrack Room Ballads.

The poems in this book include such classics as “The Road To Mandalay” and “Gunga Din”. When asked if he had read it, Rylah replied: “No, I haven’t…, but with a title like that it must be dirty.”

Despite Robert Menzies’ failure to ban the Australian Communist Party, its official newspaper Tribune was at various times seized, prohibited from being sold on the streets and its offices regularly raided.

After the Crown’s sacking of the Whitlam government in 1975, the Tribune departed from tradition by publishing daily until the subsequent election.

Its publishers felt that the public wasn’t being fully informed, and the public must have felt the same – the paper’s sales had never been higher.

Falling sales and disillusionment of Australian Communists by the actions of the USSR in Europe saw the “Trib” close its doors in 1991.

I hold no torch for the Tribune or the Communist Party but in its day it reported on aspects of issues that would otherwise never have surfaced, and was persecuted for doing so.

We are still denied permission to see letters that passed between the Palace and Canberra at the time of the dismissal because they have been deemed “personal”. This is nothing short of a disgrace.

One of the major hindrances to our right to know lies in the repealing or watering down of laws designed to protects us from media monopolies.

Australia is in a unique position among democracies in that its major “popular” press and other media outlets are for all intents and purposes controlled by virtually one master.

This has led to a skewing of news to favour one side of politics –the side that best aligns itself with the world view of the owners.

Coinciding with this, the erosion of the print media in favour of digital

platforms – and a decline in reading skills generally – now means that many people read headlines and introductions only, and rarely follow an issue through.

However, the AFP raid on News Corp journalist Annika Smethurst may have backfired.

The organisation for which she works has been strident in its one-eyed barracking for the neoconservative side of politics, and the raid seems to have led some long-term employees to question their loyalty.

There are several “new” digital and print players in the news field and several publish factual, wellresearched in-depth articles dealing with current issues.

If the government – with the craven obsequience of opposing factions – is allowed to continue on the path it is following, then they, too will be silenced, along with the ABC and the “mainstream” players.

It is no secret that the Murdoch empire wants to see the ABC and SBS closed down.

It has already been successful in silencing the ABC’s international arm, a service that was relied on in many third world countries as a reliable source of news from the outside world.

And the government has never told us why Murdoch’s Sky channel was given $30 million, apparently with no paperwork or conditions.

So effective now is the burying of information that governments no longer feel that they are accountable to the public. This in turn has emboldened unscrupulous corporations to flaunt the law, in spirit if not in the letter.

When the media is silenced governments can – and do – get away with murder. It must never happen here.

The events surrounding the rise and fall of the Nugan Hand bank are still shrouded in mystery, as are so many of the issues surrounding the war against Vietnam.

A Royal Commission into the bank found that it was implicated in money-laundering, illegal tax avoidance schemes, and widespread violations of banking laws.

One witness, a former bank director, stated that Michael Hand threatened bank executives: “If we didn’t do what we were told, and things weren’t handled properly, our wives would be cut into pieces and put in boxes and sent back to us”. But the Royal Commission did not find credible evidence of drug-smuggling, arms dealing, and CIA involvement (as is often alleged).

However, on November 9th 2015, the Sydney Morning Herald claimed that Michael Hand was alive and living in the USA where he owned a business manufacturing, among other things, “tactical weapons for US Special Forces”.

A thank you to a critic – and a reply I thank Mr Leisk for his spirited defence of Christianity, of our new Prime Minister and for his critique of my article in the Molong Express of 6th June inst. (“PM or Pentecostal?

Scot Morrison can’t be both” p. 10), and while I’m at it, an apology to the aforementioned politician for misspelling his forename.

I am not going to debate all the statements he makes.

Arguing against the faithful is always futile for, to paraphrase the born-again Christians, I am not saved, so I don’t understand.

However, I must take issue with a few of his points. In his statement at (b), Mr Leisk writes that “Mr Povah has expressed that Mr Morrison is our ‘new’ Prime Minister. Just to clarify, Scott Morrison was sworn in as the 30th Prime Minister of Australia on the 24th August 2018, by the Governor-General.”

I’d answer this by saying that Morrison may have been sworn in by the Governor General, but came to the leadership, figuratively if not literally, by the Ancient Roman Gambit,

as portrayed by William Shakespeare. Et tu, Brute? indeed.

Now, our present GG is fond of saying that he can only act on the advice of the Prime Minister, so on whose advice did he act when he installed Morrison? In any case, Morrison did not become an elected Prime Minister until the polls were called after May 18th.

At (d) Mr Leisk takes me to task for my comments about the visits of Rudd and Costello to Hillsong, likening it to nothing more than a visit to Rotary or a bowling club. To the best of my knowledge, neither Rotary nor the Royal NSW Lawn Bowling Association are religious organisations, not yet anyway, and in Australia we have a convention that “church and state” should be kept apart.

I’ll skip (e) – Mr Leisk needs to take another look at the government’s “priorities” and Morrison’s campaign statements then get back to me if he wishes. Moving on to (f). If, as Mr Leisk claims, Morrison’s church – and the giant corporation with which it is affiliated, were so lavish in

their endowments to the poor and needy outside their own congregations, why are the ranks of the homeless swelling at such an alarming rate? And to be fair, we must all ask that question of every sect and cult within the Christian church: of all this country’s major religious bodies in fact. The combined assets of the Catholic and Protestant churches alone would go a long way to easing the chronic need for social housing – if not ending it.

I may be misreading Mr Leisk, but he seems to have missed the main point in what I wrote. That is, if Morrison is in truth committed to the tenets of Pentecostalism, then that should disqualify him as prime minister. CTLX sheep and lamb report for 5/6/19

Agents yarded Lamb 10100 & Sheep 2760 Numbers were up by 2,200 for a yarding of 10,100 lambs. It was a very good quality

yarding with a top selection of trade lambs throughout.

There were also some very good heavy weights along with some well finished Merinos. There was also the usual runs of ideal lambs to suit the restockers. All the regular buyers competed solidly.

Lightweight lambs to the processors were around firm. Trade lambs were firm to $5 dearer. Heavy weight lambs were firm with few to compare to in the previous sale.

Merino lambs were $8 dearer, restocker lambs were around firm, hoggets sold to $202/head.

There were 2,760 pretty fair quality mutton yarded where most grades were $6/head cheaper. The 2 score ewes sold from $50 to $123 while the better 3 and 4 scores sold from $107 to $240 for crossbreds and $250/ head for very heavy Merinos.

Agent’s yarded 3000 It was a fair quality, yarding with good numbers of cows and young cattle primarily lacking finish. There was only a limited selection of well finished trade cattle and feeders and there were a few pens of well finished grown steers and heifers. Most of the regular buyers were Operating, along with a couple of extra restocker orders.

Young cattle to the trade were firm, Feeder steers were firm for the heavy weights and 8c dearer for the lighter weights, while the feeder heifers were up to 15c/kg dearer.

Young restocker cattle were a little dearer.

Grown steers were 4c cheaper, grown heifers were firm.

Plain conditioned cows were 2c to 3c cheaper, while the properly finished cows were 5c/kg dearer. The restockers and

feeders paid from 60c to 180c for cows in plain condition and from 183c to 200c/kg for cows in forward condition.

PROPOSAL TO RE-ESTABLISH ALCOHOL FREE ZONES AND ALCOHOL PROHIBITED ZONES Cabonne Council is seeking comments or submissions from members of the public on its proposal to re-establish alcohol free zones and alcohol prohibited zones and amendment to the ‘Alcohol Control in Public Places Policy’.

Council in 1999 established a series of alcohol free zones and alcohol prohibited zones at Canowindra and Molong. These areas included: Alcohol Free Zone Molong – Bank Street from Edward Street to the Mitchell Highway Canowindra – Gaskill Street from Ferguson Street to Tilga Street Canowindra – the area from Gaskill Street to, and including, the Swinging Bridge Alcohol Prohibited area Molong – Village Green Canowindra – Morris Park and Memorial Park.

Alcohol free zones as prescribed by the Local Government Act 1993 apply to roads, and public car parks. The zone applies 24 hours, seven per week.

Alcohol prohibited areas may be applied to parks, sporting ovals and public reserves and may be time limited.

It is suggested that the Cabonne Council zones be re-established for a four year period.

AMENDMENT TO THE ALCOHOL CONTROL IN PUBLIC PLACES POLICY To permit licensing of outdoor dining areas within an Alcohol Free Zone the council’s ‘Alcohol Control in Public Places Policy’ would require an amendment by inclusion in part 11 of that policy when addressing Alcohol Free Zones of a statement that reads as follows: ‘Implementation of these zones would not prevent the consumption of alcohol in any footpath dining areas that have a liquor license covering the footpath dining areas.’

The proposal and amended policy is currently on public exhibition until Friday, 19 July 2019 and can be viewed at Cabonne Council’s offices at Molong, Cudal and Canowindra or on Council’s website at www.cabonne.nsw.gov.au.

MOLONG GOLF Last Sunday 6 ladies travelled to Peak Hill for the Sand Greens Tournament with 4 returning home as winners. They were Ann Wood, Kerry Oates, Helen Balcomb and Barbara Wright.

Thank you to all those who supported our raffle on Saturday at the Bank Street Kiosk, and to Peter Evans for donating the wood prize, and the Freemasons for donating the dinner. It is very much appreciated and is a great help in keeping the Club going. Cameron Wild won the load of wood and Michael Johnson won the dinner for two at the Freemasons.
