Memories of August

I can hardly wait for the new library to be built in Molong

On a recent wet, snowy day in Orange I found my way to the Orange City Library. Warm, snug, fantastic customer services, well resourced with computers, internet, copiers, family research centre and a marvellous range of books to borrow. I am hoping that the new Molong Library (to be built in 2020/21 adjoining the new Molong Community Centre in upper Bank Street) will have similar, if not better features. I wandered into the OCL for a proposed half hour ... some 2 hours later I was still sitting snug ... reading and researching.

Australian Screen Movietone Special: Peace: Australia Celebrates (1945)

by Poppy De Souza This dancing man is one of the best-known images of the celebrations at the end of the Second World War. His brief (eight second) appearance, captured on film in George Street, between King Street and Martin Place on 15 August 1945, has been replayed countless times and come to encapsulate the spontaneity of emotion throughout the nation on that day.

In the years since this newsreel was first shown, the mystery surrounding the dancer’s name has compounded the fascination with this audiovisual record. Even now, his identity remains in dispute and a number of men over the years have claimed to be the figure in the newsreel. But whatever the genesis of this scene, it illustrates how resonant icons can make historic news events timeless and, in doing so, embed themselves into the national consciousness.

The courtyard between the Orange City Library and Tourist Info Centre/ Museum/Cafe holds a number of interesting street art features which would give Molong a special feel. Let’s hope our extremely conservative Cabonne Councillors will encourage their equally extremely conservative planners and decision makers to ‘spread their design/approval wings’ to introduce a new approach to Molong’s identity.

Markets off

As expected the October long weekend Molong markets have been cancelled. Marj Bollinger writes...

“It is with regret that I advise, following last night’s meeting, Molong Advancement Group, after adopting a Covid 19 Safety Plan, unanimously supported the motion: ‘That MAG does not conduct the Molong Village Markets on Monday 5 October and continues with planning to conduct the next market on Monday 5 April 2021.’

Whilst it would be legally possible for us to run the Markets

in October as long as we meet all of the requirements stated in the plan, after considering the feedback and information to hand, the meeting indicated that in the best interests of our community, logistically and ethically it is not possible to go ahead as planned in October.

Our thanks to all who provided feedback and information that allowed us to arrive at an informed decision.

Keep happy, well and safe with fingers crossed that 2021 will be kind to us all and we can get back to ‘business’ as usual at Easter.”

Level five water restrictions to be relaxed Orange City Council will ease water restrictions to level four as the combined water storage capacity reaches 40 per cent in the coming days.

The total water storage level is 39 per cent, as of Monday at 10am.

Orange Mayor Reg Kidd said, due to the recent rain, the level had risen 4 per cent in one week.

“That’s phenomenal,” Cr Kidd said. “We can all let out a collective sigh of relief as we have tackled the worst of the drought and we’re coming out the other side. “ “I’d like to congratulate the residents of Orange for being so diligent in their responsible use of water over the last 18 months, and indeed before the drought.

“I’m again asking Orange residents to keep up the good work.

Let’s all work together to get our storage levels to 50 per cent.

“50 per cent will give us the breathing room we need to get us comfortably through summer.

“I’d like to thank Water Minister Melinda Pavey for her enormous help given to Orange and the region in regard to water projects and long-term water sustainability.”

Orange City Council CEO David Waddell said Council would ease restrictions to level four, from level five, as soon as the storage reached the 40 per cent milestone.

“Given the recent rain, we have had a huge increase in the amount of water flowing into Suma Park Dam from natural inflows in Summer Hill Creek. As of Monday morning it was flowing at the rate of 57 megalitres per day,” Mr Waddell said.

“By comparison, earlier in the year, there was a total of 183 mega litres of natural inflows into the dam during the three months between mid-February to Mid-May. “This, combined with our stormwater harvesting schemes and the Macquarie Pipeline means we can realistically strive to reach 50 per cent storage in the next couple of months. But we’ll need residents to continue to be careful with Level 4 restrictions.

“I’d also like to thank the Water Minister for her continued support for water projects in Orange and the region, throughout this really tough time. The contribution of Orange residents and businesses has also been crucial in getting us through the worst drought on record.

“Looking at the forecast, we will likely reach 40 per cent within the next few days. As soon as this milestone is reached Council will announce the easing of restrictions.

Vietnam Veterans Day

A small group of Molong RSL Sub Branch members held a short service at the Cenotaph on Tuesday to commemorate Vietnam Veterans Day. Also known as Long Tan Day, Vietnam Veterans’ Day falls on 18 August each year. The Vietnam War was Australia’s longest military engagement of the 20th century. Almost 60,000 Australians fought in the war and more than 500 lost their lives. Originally known as Long Tan Day, Vietnam Veterans Day is commemorated on 18 August every year.

Minister fails to ensure transparency around NSW Councillor disclosures

Labor has accused the NSW Government of letting councils hide councillors’ declarations about their property, finances and conflicts of interest.

New council governance rules updated last Friday let councils bury disclosures on large and complex websites, without requirements to ensure accessibility.

Labor Shadow Minister for Local Government Greg Warren said: “The rules and regulations around councillors’ disclosure of interests are as transparent as a muddy river. Right now they can be buried in a mountain of paperwork and council minutes that could take you days to find.

“The Minister for Local Government Shelley Hancock should have updated the rules to

increase council accountability and make sure disclosures are easily accessible.”

Labor says members of the public should be able to navigate straight from a council’s homepage to a page with the disclosure logs.

“It’s really important that communities can trust their elected representatives and that those representatives are motivated by what is best for the community, not their own self-interest.

“With the stroke of a pen Shelley Hancock can make the disclosures easy to access online, without having to spend hours scrolling through a council’s website. She should do that immediately.”

Decentralisation delivers jobs to Orange

More jobs are coming to Orange following this week’s opening of the Australian Government’s new Regional Programs branch office in the New South Wales regional city.

The launch of the office follows the branch’s relocation from Canberra under the Australian Government’s decentralisation agenda, supporting regional jobs and local economies.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack, who officially opened the new office on Byng Street, said the relocation supported the city by shifting public service functions from Canberra to Orange, generating local jobs.

“Today’s opening builds on the strong focus the Nationals in Government have always placed on decentralisation, boosting the Central West’s economy and delivering local jobs,” the Deputy Prime Minister said.

“Bringing public servants to Orange from Canberra makes them more connected to the regions and the communities they serve.

“It also increases accessibility for locals, connecting them to significant functions of government.

“Investment in regional centres always pays off for local communities and I look forward to Orange attracting high-calibre staff, who will bring with them a strong understanding of regional issues.

“Our decentralisation agenda is supporting regional jobs and communities at a time when it’s needed most.”

Minister for Decentralisation and Regional Education, and Federal Member for Calare, Andrew Gee, welcomed the Australian Government’s commitment of $4.7 billion from 2013-14 to 2025-26 to regional development programs.

“The new Regional Programs office in Orange is a fantastic example of the Government’s decentralisation agenda in action, and will complement the work of the Regional Investment Corporation’s head office which was established in Orange 2018,” Minister Gee said.

“The Central West, like many country communities, has benefited immensely from the Australian Government’s regional development programs.

“The relocation of the Regional Programs Branch to Orange will create more local jobs and offers a great opportunity for public servants from across Australia to make the ‘tree change’.

No pension rise for the first time since 1931

“Many pensioners, especially singles with the pension as their sole source of income, will be very disappointed that at the forthcoming September pension indexation their pension will not be increased to keep pace with the cost of living”, said CPSA Policy Manager Paul Versteege.

“Pensions are indexed on the basis of inflation and wages and the rule is it can’t go down.

However, the last time the pension did not increase was in 1931, when it was reduced from $104 to $78 a year.

“The current rates are $944.30 for singles and $1,423.60 for couples combined per fortnight.

“The rates applicable from 20 September 2020 have not yet been formally announced but a simple calculation shows that they will not change.

“The basis for indexation on 20 September will be the Pensioner Beneficiary Cost of Living Index (PBLCI), which is a special inflation rate for pensioners used when it increases by more than the CPI. “The PBLCI numbers for the June 2020 quarter and the December 2019 quarter are the same: 115.7.

This was because several other richer countries had already organised advanced purchase agreements, and led Indonesia to temporarily withhold sharing virus samples with the WHO in retaliation. And in 2009, rich nations bought up almost all the stock of H1N1 influenza vaccines, crowding out less-developed nations.

Just to get you started we reprint portion of our March article with extracts from the Issues Paper “It is time to plan for the next phase of the development of the Molong Town Centre.’

So begins one of the most ambitious planning documents the town has seen since the Local Environment Plan was issued in 2012.

Bank Street and environs is a streetscape of considerable historic and architectural significance.

Council has committed funding to develop the Molong Town Centre Plan. This plan aims to develop new ideas and urban renewal projects to make the centre more attractive to a range of stakeholders.

Following the public exhibition of the Molong Town Centre Issues Paper and consideration of issues raised,

Council intends to engage an urban designer to work with interested members of the community to design meaningful / beneficial improvements as part of the development of the Molong Town Centre Plan.

Without these investments Molong’s Town Centre will continue to be challenged by other nearby centres for shopping and services, which could lead to deterioration of town centre assets and appeal.

Town planning is placing more emphasis on centres that serve both local and visitor markets. This is particularly important in regional NSW where resident populations are relatively stable and attracting new markets is a challenge.

To grow the economy in Molong Town Centre requires consideration of the needs of existing and emerging markets as well as an emphasis on features that clearly identifies the centre and maximises its appeal.

Molong Town Centre Street Layout • Benefits from a traditional urban grid pattern which aids traffic circulation and produces focal areas and distinct character areas between street blocks.

• Bank Street is the Main-street in Molong Town Centre, and runs in an east-west direction.

• When asked where the centre of town is, most people have indicated east of the Post Office in Bank Street. This area comprises the mainstay of retail activity in town.

Approaches to Molong Town Centre Molong’s Town Centre Bank Street is mainly approached from the Mitchell Highway, north-west and south-east.

The town centre can also be approached from Edward Street.

The intersection of Bank Street and the Mitchell Highway is the gateway to Molong Town Centre.

There is no clear Way-finding

material advising motorists of opportunities to stop and visit the centre at this intersection.

Driving past the intersection, motorists are presented with a brief glimpse of Bank Street, with a number of historic two-storied and single storey buildings and established street trees being visible. Urban infrastructure, such as light poles, overhead power lines and street furniture are incongruous from this view. Car and long vehicle parking appears limited from this view of Bank Street. There is limited parking for cars and long vehicles in Watson Street, but these spaces are separated / disassociated from the commercial precinct.

Traffic and Parking; Pedestrian Movement and Pavements To achieve safe road conditions and an inclusive centre, provision must be made for less abled and more vulnerable pedestrians (generally older residents, children or a person with a disability).

Preliminary investigation reveals limited crossing points for pedestrians to connect to both sides of the Main-street.

Tactile ground surface indicators are generally absent from intersections. The design and condition of kerb ramps can also be an issue limiting pedestrian movement throughout the centre. The alignment, grade, levels and surface condition of kerb ramps all need careful review to ensure they are suitable for all users.

Further investigation of crossing points, suitable for all users, is suggested in the Inquiryby-Design workshops.

Street furniture A range of styles and forms of seats, litter bins, planter boxes, bollards, and signs are found throughout the Centre. There is little consistency of appearance in street furniture and the style of most furniture is dated in appearance.

There is additional colourful table and chair sets on the street seating supplied by local cafes.

Public Art There is a general absence of public artwork in the Molong Town Centre. There are a number of activity / character areas in the centre where the surrounding built form lacks interest or is showing signs of deterioration.

Stimulating Property Investment

The property investment sector underpins the Molong Town Centre and is potentially one of the main drivers of change for a more active and attractive centre.

Shop proprietors can make significant improvements to their signage and internal spaces, but the property owner has control over much of the appearance of the external façade of the building.

A significant proportion of real estate in the Molong Town Centre is owned by private investors and not large corporations. Major refurbishments of existing premises are big decisions for these property owners and are largely governed by their confidence on a return on investment.

Bridging the Gap

At present, decisions to upgrade premises in the Molong Town Centre appear to be largely driven by maintenance issues and tenancy requests. There are few existing premises currently undergoing major refurbishments.

The Telegraph Hotel is planning a major refurbishment, which should not only benefit hotel customers but the Main-street as a whole due to the positive visual façade improvements facing Bank Street. These types of initiatives should be supported by the wider community, as they provide leadership for other property owners to upgrade their properties. In time they should also demonstrate the benefits of extra expenditure in lifting rents and property values.

Molong’s Town Centre can be difficult to cross when traffic is busy, particularly for the more vulnerable pedestrians.

Molong Township is already challenged by nearby regional centres offering more variety and competitive goods and services. It is critical that Molong’s Main-street becomes more cohesive, and businesses both sides of Bank Street become more physically connected.

Actions that connect both sides of the Molong Town Centre for pedestrians (especially more vulnerable pedestrians) are important to the viability of the centre. ‘Walkability’ defines the commercial heart of the Town Centre, so it follows that pedestrian facilities should facilitate movement across both sides of the Main-street.

Edward ‘Teddy’ Sheean was born on 28 December 1923 at Lower Barrington, Tasmania, fourteenth child of James Sheean, labourer, and his wife Mary Jane, née Broomhall. Soon afterwards the family moved to Latrobe. Teddy was educated at the local Catholic school. Five foot 8½ inches (174cm) tall and well built, he took casual work on farms between Latrobe and Merseylea. In Hobart on 21 April 1941 he enlisted in the Royal Australian Naval Reserve as an Ordinary Seaman, following in the steps of five of his brothers who had joined the armed forces (four of them were in the Army and one in the Navy). On completing his initial training, he was sent to Flinders Naval Depot, Westernport, Victoria, in February 1942 for further instruction.

In May Sheean was posted to Sydney where he was billeted at Garden Island in the requisitioned ferry Kuttabul, prior to joining his first ship as an Oerlikon anti-aircraft gun loader. Granted home leave, he was not on board Kuttabul when Japanese midget submarines raided the harbour and sank her on 31 May. Eleven days later he returned to Sydney to help commission the new corvette HMAS Armidale (I), which carried out escort duties along the eastern Australian coast and in New Guinea waters. Ordered to sail for Darwin in October, Armidale arrived there early next month.

On 29 November Armidale sailed for Japaneseoccupied Timor, in company with the corvette HMAS Castlemaine, to withdraw the exhausted Australian 2/2 Independent Company, evacuate about 150 Portuguese civilians and 190 Dutch troops, and land soldiers to reinforce Dutch guerrillas on the island. Arriving off Betano before dawn on 1 December, the ships rendezvoused with the naval tender HMAS Kuru, which had already taken the civilians on board. When these people were transferred to Castlemaine, she sailed for Darwin, leaving the other two vessels to carry out the rest of the operation. From 12:28 Armidale and Kuru came under repeated attack from Japanese aircraft. Despite requests, no air cover was received.

The Loss of HMAS Armidale Shortly before 14:00 on 1 December 1942, Armidale, by then separated from Kuru, was attacked by no less than thirteen aircraft. The corvette manoeuvred frantically. At 15:15 a torpedo struck her port side and another hit the engineering spaces; finally a bomb struck aft.

As the vessel listed heavily to port, the order was given to abandon ship. The survivors leapt into the sea and were machine-gunned by the Japanese aircraft. Once he had helped to free a life-raft, Sheean scrambled back to his gun on the sinking ship. Although wounded in the chest and back, the 18-year-old sailor shot down one bomber and kept other aircraft away from his comrades in the water. He was seen still firing his gun as Armidale slipped below the waves.

Only 49 of the 149 men who had been on board survived the sinking and the ensuing days in life rafts.

Recognition Sheean was mentioned in dispatches for his bravery and in 1999 HMAS Sheean, a Collins Class submarine, was named after him - the only ship in the RAN to bear the name of a sailor.

In 2020, following a sustained public campaign to have Ordinary Seaman Sheean’s selfless actions appropriately recognised, an expert panel recommended to the Australian Government that he be considered for the the award of a Victoria Cross.

On 12 August 2020 the Australian Governor General, His Excellency General the Honourable David Hurley, AC, DSC, (Retd) announced that HM Queen Elizabeth II had approved a posthumous award of the Victoria Cross to Ordinary Seaman Sheean.

In doing so, Ordinary Seaman ‘Teddy’ Sheean, became the first member of the Royal Australian Navy to be awarded Australia’s highest honour for valour.

The Express Virtual Book Club I often pick up ‘off the beaten track’ second-hand books written by early Australian writers. These ‘gems’ often hold local versions of historical events as told over the campfire or the paddock fence about what really happened.

Here’s an example.

The Escort Rocks Robbery near Eugowra on 15 June 1862 included legendary bushrangers, Frank Gardiner, Ben Hall and Johnny Gilbert - and has been well written in the history books. Including an account by the late Mr Burgess of Molong who as a lad, happened to be working in the nearby bushland and witnessed the robbery. (See this story in the Molong Historical Museum collection).

What happened to the 2,719 ounces of gold (worth $$millions today) and the 3,700 pounds ($7,000plus

today) in cash the horse led coach was carrying from the Forbes district goldfields to Orange? Why did the bushrangers not stick to their final plan?

In seeking a local version of the robbery - something told over the bush telegraph or a story told over a campfire - I picked up a ‘gem’ for sale at the Molong Library titled ‘The River People’. A 1980’s coffee table book written by James Cowan with fabulous photos by Colin Beard, (printed by Reed). This is a great book of interviews with the people who lived along the Darling River environs - from its source near Gunning to when the waters join the Murray. One of the stories is told by Meander old-timer, Morris Styles.

Meet Morris Styles ‘Frank Gardiner was their undoing you know, he (Morris Styles) explained, rolling a cigarette with trembling, arthritic fingers. His wheezy voice betrayed a lifetime of hard work battling against drought and depression. ‘He wanted to run away with Kitty Walsh that first night. She wouldn’t go with him unless he produced a riding trap for the journey. That’s why the gang hung around Wheoga for so long: waitin’ for someone to come along with a ridin’ trap.’

‘What about the rest of the gold,’ I asked, ‘was it ever located?’

Morris Styles gulped on his cigarette.

‘I reckon some of it was buried here below the Wheoga’ he went on. ‘A couple of Americans appeared at the Pinnacle homestead one day asking if they could borrow a shovel and a mattock. They then climbed up into the foothills and dug out about an acre of ground to a depth of two feet.’

‘Who were these Americans?’

‘Frank Gardiner’s sons, I believe.

They had come out here to dig up their father’s share of the robbery. Or the gold from his earlier robberies in the region.

He must have given them directions where to dig.’

‘Did they find the gold?’ I asked.

Morris Styles shrugged ‘I’m sure of it. Because they had cleared out before anyone knew they’d come. I reckon they

drove back to Sydney as fast as they could and took a ship to America.’

Yet Morris Styles’ own life is a saga of another kind. In his youth he had worked as a drover along the Lachlan.

He had also worked as a journalist for one of the local papers in Forbes until the Depression drove him back onto the land.

‘You had to go back if you wanted to survive,’ he said. ‘I sat on 200 acres and tried to weather it out. But it was too small, so I moved onto a 700 acre lot.

My gawd, that was flamin’ drudgery.

You had to work seven days a week just to keep your head above water. With wheat at one and eleven pence a bushel and wool at ninepence a pound, it was sheer hell. But we ate alright which is more than I could say for some people.’

Before World War I the region around the Weddins was littered with small mining communities. According to Morris, these places were populated with the flotsam and jetsamof the world.

Though he did admit to admiring the Scandinavians who had jumped ship in Sydney in search of work inland.

‘Those fellas never used to work in the mines,’ Morris explained. They were too sensible. Instead the they would build themselves a slab hut on the outskirts of town and then offer themselves for work doing odd jobs. They were hardworking people, them Scandinavians. You

never knew their names, though. Like everyone in these mining towns you only knew people by their nicknames.

Like ‘Jimmy the Hawk’ or ‘Charley Lookup’. People livd for the present in them days. What a man had done in his past was his own business.’

He could also recall the extreme poverty that existed in these mining villages. Boiled wheat mixed with molasses and stinging nettle soup was a staple diet for many. And, if a family was fortunate enough to run down a hare, then they might enjoy eating meat for a change.

Morris has vivid recollections of the first great rabbit plague to hit the Lachlan. ‘I was just a kid when they came.

They landed on us at sundown. It was like a flood comin’ in. They piled up so deep against the palisade fence around the house that they eventually climbed over one another into the garden. We used to go outside with slush lamps and a piece of iron as a weapon. Spent half the night butcherin’ them, we did. It was them or us. In the morning we’d find them layin’ thick on the ground. Me and my brother, Lawson, would spend most of the day cartin’ the bodies away.

Ruby Princess inquiry blames NSW health officials for debacle

The inquiry commissioned by the Berejiklian government into the Ruby Princess COVID-19 disaster has laid blame on NSW health officials, who made “inexcusable” and “inexplicable” mistakes. It also exonerated the Australian Border Force.

In the report, the federal government was sharply criticised for refusing to allow an official to appear before the inquiry, with commissioner Bret Walker SC saying this belied Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s promise of full cooperation.

Some 2,700 passengers from the Carnival Australia cruise ship were allowed to disembark on March 19 before the test results for COVID-19 had come back. The passengers, some of whom had displayed respiratory symptoms, scattered widely, spreading the virus. This led to hundreds of cases, with some 28 deaths linked to the cluster.

Walker found serious mistakes and misjudgements on the part of health officials. He said that in light of all the information the NSW health expert panel had, “the decision to assess the risk of the Ruby Princess as ‘low risk’ – meaning, in effect, ‘do nothing’ – is as inexplicable as it is unjustifiable. It was a serious mistake”.

It should have been assumed there were possible infected passengers “who could transmit the virus and perhaps spark an outbreak of infection, if no steps

were taken to prevent or limit that outcome”.

Passengers should not have been allowed to spread through the community until test results were known.

“The delay in obtaining test results for the swabs taken from the Ruby Princess on the morning of 19 March is inexcusable. Those swabs should have been tested immediately,” Walker said.

“The failure to await test results on 19 March is a large factor in this commission’s findings as to the mistakes and misjudgements that caused the scattering of infected passengers.”

Walker criticised the cruise line for not having enough swabs aboard but said, given this, there should have been dockside swabbing.

There has been speculation about whether the Australian Border Force had any responsibility for the disaster, but Walker stressed “neither the ABF nor any ABF officers played any part in the mishap”.

“The relevant legislative provisions make it crystal clear that the Australian Border Force (ABF), despite its portentous title, has no relevant responsibility for the processes by which, by reference to health risks to the Australian community, passengers were permitted to disembark,” he said.

But Walker was blunt about the federal government’s attitude to the inquiry. “The one fly in the ointment so far as assistance to this commission goes, is the stance

With the good falls of rain and snow over the weekend numbers were back by 1135 head. It was a good quality yarding, with good numbers of young cattle in prime condition along with odd pens of well finished grown steers and heifers. There were very few feeders yarded with the bulk of the young cattle going to the restockers to go on crop or the processors.

There were also some good runs of well finished cows yarded.

"A summons to a Commonwealth officer to attend and give evidence about the grant of pratique for the Ruby Princess was met with steps towards proceedings in the High Court of Australia.

"Quite how this met the prime minister’s early assurance of full cooperation with the commission escapes me.

"This waste of time and resources, when time, in particular, was always pressing, was most regrettable.”

Walker said it seemed a “practical approach was swamped by a determination never to concede, apparently on constitutional grounds, the power of a state parliament to compel evidence to be provided to a state executive inquiry (such as a royal commission or a special commission of inquiry) by the Commonwealth or any of its officers, agencies or authorities.”

Labor’s shadow minister for home affairs, Kristina Keneally, said that on March 15, Morrison had said he was putting in place “bespoke arrangements” for arriving cruise ships.

“He promised cruise ships would be ‘directly under the command of the Australian Border Force’.

"What ‘bespoke arrangements’ did Scott Morrison put in place for arriving cruise ships? This report shows there were none,” Keneally said.

Applications are open for the first round of Cabonne Council’s 2020-21 Community Assistance Program (CAP) grants, which are designed to provide an ongoing or sustainable benefit to local communities.

Applicants must be a not-for-profit organisation in the Cabonne Local Government Area and be undertaking a project on non-commercial facilities within the Shire.

Grants are provided on a 50:50 basis, but communities can provide their half of the funding through voluntary labour or in-kind contributions.

A cold and wet Saturday welcomed the Molong Magpies back to the Rec to play the Canowindra Pythons.

Two disappointing performances against the Blayney Rams and away at Coonabarabran last week meant a win was sorely needed for the Magpies to keep the season alive, and the conditions meant the task ahead of Molong would not be an easy one.

The opening exchanges proved Molong were up for the challenge though, as the boys initially played to their structures and were rewarded with a try early. It came as Scotty Nichols took the line on, reached long as he was taken down in a tackle and but still managed to get the ball over for a try. After the quick start unfortunately complacency set in for Molong. The dominance in territory and possession by the Magpies did not convert into points on the scoreboard and the game fell into an arm wrestle with Canowindra. It wasn't until Charlie Cooper scored late in the first half that Molong began to find themselves getting on back top of a determined Canowindra outfit. The half time score was 14-0 to Molong.
