Again! Molong to meet undefeated Blayney in Final The Molong Magpies had an emphatic 43-13 win at Geurie in the preliminary final of the Oilsplus competition.

This books them a grand final spot against the undefeated Blayney side this coming Saturday.

Geurie have been strong all season only losing very close games to Blayney and Coolah, whilst Molong have been building slowly throughout the season. This should have led to a very close game, however the Magpies blew Geurie off the park in the first ten minutes and followed through for the remainder of the game.

A bit of history

Molong and Blayney Rugby Clubs go back yonks. With changing territories over the years they didn't always meet up in the same competition.

But when they did, especially in a grand final, it was "Rugby Heaven".

No-one should be foolish enough to predict the automatic demise of John Howard and his government based solely on a series of bad polls. But something tells me we are facing a phenomenon far more fundamental with the decline in appeal of the government in supposedly “good times”.

I believe it was reflected several months ago when Jackie Kelly decided not to run again for her western Sydney seat of Lindsay.

Molong’s pride, NRL St. George Illawarra team member, Cody Ramsey returned home recently during the Dragon’s weekend bye. Arriving well before the Greater Sydney/Wollongong COVID lockdown - Cody spent time with his mum, Kim and Dave Stojanov, and little sister’s Alize, Jamo and grandmother Shirley Lloyd. “I’m enjoying playing with the Dragons” said Cody who worked hard from a young kid to achieve his dream to wear the NRL Dragons guernsey.

Likewse, we all enjoy watching you on the big screen Cody playing with the same committment and loyalty you gave to junior local footy, former team members in Manildra and Molong, and local communities.

Starstruck Dragons Fan: Molong boy Cooper Gobourg caught wind of Cody’s presence at the bottom pub, and raced home in the hopes the footy star would sign his Dragons jersey, footy, and his Cody Ramsey 2020 “Season to Remember” NRL collectors card.

Cody delivered on the above and then some, heading out to his Ute where he returned to give Coop his training boots as a special memento. Needless to say, Coop’s family said “it’s the quietest we’ve ever heard him,” and later saw the little fella asleep with Cody’s boots on the floor beside his bed.

Currently enjoying school holidays at home with his family - Connor loved his special birthday cake made by Tamika Gallagher.

Molong can be proud of quiet achiever - local schoolboy and Cabonne Junior Roos member, Bailey Peschka who has already been spotted by the NRL Dragons’ selectors. “I’m signed with the Dragons - Footy is my passion” said Bailey who is a student at the Molong Central School.

“I’ve wanted to be an NRL player since I was five” said Bailey - who locals have observed from around that age training and playing with the Cabonne Junior Roos.

“Bailey is currently a team member chosen for the 2021 NSW Rugby League Schools Championships Under 15’s” said Tania Bohringer, President of the Roos. “A huge congratulations to Bailey on his selection. He recently went to camp in Wollongong and last Saturday he played with the team at St. Mary’s.

He’s played great all week and had a cracking game scoring two tries. Cabonne Roos are proud of you Bailey” messaged Tania.

Reported by Nick Campton News Corp Australia Sports Newsroom online (ourfootyteam.com) “it took almost 4 hours for Molong Central School backrower Bailey Peschka to get to St Mary’s - but he and his CHS teammates took just 30 minutes to down CIS in a 22-6 victory in the second match of the Under 15s Schoolboy Championships tri-series.

“Peschka scored two tries in an excellent display on the right edge and was busy on both sides of the ball as CHS ran out to a 22-0 lead at halftime against an out of sorts CIS.” Currently contracted to the Dragons, Peschka had a vocal contingent of supporters in tow who travelled down from the central west on the day.

“I’ve got my mum, my nan, my auntie, my other auntie, my dad and my brother all here. Most of them came down this morning,” Peschka said.

“The footy in Molong isn’t quite as hard as this but it’s close sometimes. “I just tried to support our team and (to) let them know I was there and supporting each one.

Well done to Edna Bleakley who made the new Rec. playground a safer place for kids to enjoy. Apparently a drinking party was held one weekend night recently at the new playground with glass left shattered. Edna, being a strong supporter, loyal local and one who cares about Molong saw the problem and with the help of other volunteers picked her way through the playground collecting the sharp shards of glass. Thanks Edna and team for making the playground a safe place for kids and families.

Joyce reshuffle

Andrew Gee joins cabinet

Member for Calare Andrew Gee joins the federal cabinet, replacing Darren Chester as Minister for Veterans’ Affairs and Defence Personnel.

In a statement issued on Sunday Mr Gee said: “It’s a privilege to be appointed Minister for Veterans’ Affairs and Defence Personnel as part of the Morrison-Joyce Government.

I acknowledge the exceptional dedication and hard work that Darren Chester brought to his role as Minister.

I’m really looking forward to working with all veterans and ensuring that their service to this nation is recognised and respected and that their voices are heard.

The welfare and care of those

who’ve given so much to our country is vitally important and I’m determined to advocate as hard as I possibly can for all of them.

I appreciate that being in government is a rare gift that gives us the opportunity to deliver results for the people we represent.

For me that means strong representation for all veterans and also country communities.

Our nation faces major challenges and the decisions we make now will have a huge impact on the Australia we hand down to our children and grandchildren.

As Nationals we’ll work with our Coalition colleagues to pass these tests and continue to get runs on the board for all Australians.

The NSW Electoral Commission says it will need 121 staff for the Cabonne Council election on September 4. Orange will require 193 staff.

A further 110 will be needed on election day for Cabonne.

The Orange and Cabonne council returning offices will be in Orange.

Office assistants are paid $29-$43 an hour while senior assistants are paid $34-$51 an hour.

Poll day pay rates, including a training payment and meal allowance range from $448 to $1016, depending on the role.

The Commission’s Director of Election Support Services Wayne Morgan said the work ranged from

marking names off the electoral roll, managing an entire polling place or being a ballot box guard.

He said election officials perform a range of tasks on election day, including providing information to voters, sorting and counting ballot papers, assisting voters as they cast their vote and working together to implement COVID-safe practices.

“If you’re available to work on Saturday, September 4 and enrolled to vote, you can submit an expression of interest to work as an election official,” he said.

Western NSW Local Health District COVID-19 update

WNSWLHD Chief Executive Scott McLachlan advised that at 28 June there are no cases of COVID-19 in the Western NSW Local Health District.

In NSW there have been 130 locally acquired cases reported since 16 June 2021, when the first case of the Bondi cluster, a driver who transported international flight crew, was reported. Of these, 124 are now linked to the Bondi cluster.

People who have returned from the Greater Sydney area, including the Blue Mountains, Central Coast, Wollongong and Shellharbour areas, since 21 June are subject to stay-at-home orders.

As a result of the increase in cases in the Sydney region and local demand for COVID-19 swabs, we have increased our local capacity for COVID-19 testing.

Testing is available for people who have even mild symptoms that are associated with COVID-19. Symptoms include: fever, cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, runny nose, loss of taste or smell. Other reported symptoms include fatigue, acute blocked nose (congestion), muscle pain, joint pain, headache, diarrhoea, nausea/vomiting, loss of appetite, unexplained chest pain and conjunctivitis. It is important to maintain high testing rates to identify as many cases in the community as quickly as possible.

This is important for everyone, but particularly

The best thing everyone can do at this point is to stay at home unless it is essential, and remember to: • clean your hands thoroughly for at least 20 seconds with soap and water, or an alcoholbased hand rub • cover your nose and mouth when coughing and sneezing with tissue or a flexed elbow • avoid close contact with anyone with cold or flu-like symptoms • stay home if you are sick • keep your distance from others as much as possible through social distancing The current restrictions for people across the WNSWLHD are: • People who have been in the Greater Sydney region (including the Blue Mountains, Central Coast and Wollongong) on or after June 21 should follow the stay-at-home orders for a period of 14 days after they left Greater Sydney.

• Visitors to households will be limited to 5 guests – including children; • Masks will be compulsory in all indoor nonresidential settings, including workplaces, and at organised outdoor events; • Drinking while standing at indoor venues will not be allowed; • Singing by audiences and choirs at indoor venues or by congregants at indoor places of worship will not be allowed; • Dancing will not be allowed at indoor hospitality venues or nightclubs however, dancing is allowed at weddings for the wedding party only (no more than 20 people); • Dance and gym classes limited to 20 per class (masks must be worn); • The one person per four square metre rule will be re-introduced for all indoor and outdoor settings, including weddings and funerals; • Outdoor seated, ticketed events will be limited to 50 per cent seated capacity;

Darren Chester on being ‘screwed over’ by Barnaby Joyce – twice

Darren Chester says he can’t explain why Barnaby Joyce sacked him because the Deputy Prime Minister was “incoherent” when he rang on Sunday to tell him he was being dumped from cabinet to the backbench.

There were no harsh words, Chester said on Monday – just a “matter-of-fact conversation. He was sacking me. I didn’t agree with him, and I got on with the walk I was having with my dog.”

“I wouldn’t normally comment on private conversations, but I’m gonna say the conversation I had with Barnaby was so incoherent yesterday, I couldn’t actually explain what he was even saying to me.

"So people of Australia, brace yourself, there will be more conversations like that.”

For Chester, a moderate and a strong supporter of ousted leader Michael McCormack, who has lost the portfolios of veterans’ affairs and defence personnel, there must have been a strong feeling of déjà vu. He’s been here before with Joyce.

As he put it bluntly on Monday, “I’ve been screwed over by the National Party twice in the last three years”.

Or more precisely, by Joyce.

In December 2017, Chester was sacked in a reshuffle from the post of infrastructure and transport. Joyce, who was deputy prime minister to Malcolm Turnbull, took the portfolio himself.

It was reported one factor was Chester’s support for fellow Victorian Bridget McKenzie for deputy leader of the party. She beat Joyce’s candidate, Matt Canavan. Chester argued the Nationals needed a different sort of face.

That time, Chester was offered a very junior role, which he declined. This time, there was no offer.

And, in a bitter irony, his sacking now opened a place for McKenzie – who was forced to resign last year in the sports rorts affair – to return to cabinet.

Chester noted Joyce on Sunday had said “I was a competent minister – well he can explain why a competent minister is no longer in his job”.

As for the future, “the relationship I’ll have with Barnaby Joyce going forward will be completely and utterly business-like.

"I have no personal relationship with Barnaby, I don’t seek a personal relationship with Barnaby.

It’ll be completely pragmatic.

I will go to him with projects on behalf of Gippslanders, if I don’t get my fair share for

Gippsland you’ll hear about it.”

Another loser in the reshuffle, resources and water minister Keith Pitt, who has been pushed from cabinet to the outer ministry, was restrained. “I just do the job I’m given to the best of my ability,” he said on Monday.

The mining sector has every cause to be surprised at being relegated, given Joyce is very close to it.

But the cabinet spot of Pitt, a McCormack vote, was needed to reward Andrew Gee, who went across to Joyce (and gets Chester’s portfolios). And there was also muttering about an old grudge against Pitt, lingering from Joyce’s first challenge.

Pitt on Monday put out a statement reporting Australia’s resource and energy exports are forecast to be a record $310 billion in 2020-21, rising in 2021-22 to $334 billion.

Commenting on the figures, the CEO of the Minerals Council of Australia Tania Constable pointedly said the industry “looks forward to the return of resources to cabinet”. theconversation.com.au

Small business support grants; Dine & Discover extended

Small businesses in New South Wales will be able to access COVID-19 support payments from July 19, as part of a new support package announced by the state government today.

The NSW government will provide three categories of grants to small businesses that have seen a decrease in revenue during the restrictions, based on the level of revenue decline.

Businesses that have seen their revenue decline by 70% across a minimum two-week period, starting from June 26 and compared to an equivalent period in 2019, will receive $10,000.

For businesses that have seen a revenue decline of 50%, they will receive a $7,000 payment, and those that have seen their revenue decline by 30% will receive $5,000.

The first stream will be available to small businesses and sole traders with annual turnover above $75,000 but below the payroll tax threshold of $1.2 million, as of July 1, 2020.

These businesses must also have fewer than 20 full-time employees, and be able to show they primarily operate in NSW or have an Australian

Business Number registered in NSW. The second stream will be for hospitality and tourism businesses that have annual turnover above $75,000, but below $10 million. These businesses must also be able to show they primarily operate in NSW or have an ABN registered in NSW. The payments will be available to businesses located in all parts of NSW, not only in Sydney, and payments will begin to flow from July 19.

Additional relief and Dine and Discover extended The government will also support businesses by deferring payroll tax liabilities due in July 2021, as well as gaming machine tax liabilities for hotels.

He also urged both commercial and residential landlords to support their tenants if they are experiencing hardship during this time.

“Please work with them,” he said.

The state’s Dine & Discover vouchers, which were due to finish at the end of July, will also be extended to the end of August.

Former resident with advice for Molong

Although sixty plus years since leaving Molong behind I do enjoy reading my weekly Express.

Now retired and hundreds of miles distant, my childhood and family roots are forever deeply planted in the limestone landscape of Molong.

While saddening to witness the closure of the last customer focused bank and other historic icons along Bank Street, I appeciate how fortutate the district is to still have a local newspaper and people that make it happen. Every week there is some gem of discovery like the recent feature on Mr Bert Cole C.B.E who wrote me a reference in 1960 to help obtain my first job. I could have worked in the Ironmongery ‘Bunnings’ Department at Western Stores (now closed), followed my railwaymen grandfather and father at Molong Station (now closed), offered

an apprenticship with the Molong Express as a Linotype Operator and join many staff at its former Bank Street premises (now closed).

Instead and thanks to Mr Cole, I landed a ‘white collar’ job with CBC Bank at Cumnock (now closed at both Cumnock and Molong). My point being what is next? A local newspaper in print or online is the glue that binds any community.

Don’t become a regional ghost town like so many. Support your Molong Express, advertise and shop local, promote tourism, celebrate your history. And a footnote on the tourism front, please urge the Council to build a new heated amenities block in the local caravan park for us grey nomad oldies when we visit. Very cold down by the creek in your frosty winters!

There is a plaque on the gates of the Molong Recreation Oval (the “Rec”), commemorating Beryl Betts as “Queen of the Park” 1950, recognising her efforts raising money for charity. Beryl was the daughter of Les and Beatrice (Trix) Betts, sister to Colin and Pam, niece to Keith Prentice.

Marrying Ray in 1955, becoming Beryl Auld, she was a dearly loved mother to Malcolm, Jenni and Gayle, and devoted grandmother to Sophie, Eliza, Andrew and Alice.

She continued her commitment to charity her whole life.

Malcolm lived in Molong for a couple of years in the early nineties having bought what was his grandparents’ house at 108 Edward St. Although Beryl lived in Sydney most of her life, she visited Molong on many occasions, maintaining lifelong friendships with local

identities such as Norma Sneddon, (nee McKeown, dec), Betty Pillins, Betty and Eric Evans (dec), Narelle McKenzie, Velma Hill, Marg Sparks, as well as sister-in-law Margaret Betts, and niece Shirley Kinnaird.

Beryl will always be a “Molong Girl” and her family will continue to have strong ties to the town.

Features Downtown Fitness “Boxing was the foundation of training for me, because it’s what really got me going.”

“I saw [a bunch of men] boxing in the ring, and I wanted to try it. So, I went in there, I tried it… and I fell in love with it. It made me want to go further, and further, and further.”

Reminiscent of feelings that provided an overwhelming production of endorphins, boxing was a huge sense of release for Ms Gianisis. She recalled leaving the gym and “bouncing off the walls,” feeling flooded with senses of both euphoria, and achievement.

“Don’t get me wrong – the gym was very male-oriented, and it was quite intimidating – but I didn’t care, because I was determined to earn my place in there.”

Over the years, Ms Gianisis said she worked hard to prove her worth in the boxing ring, and gained the respect of those around her by putting in the hard yards.

“At the start, I think they thought I was going to be some kind of princess that just wanted to be around the boys,” she laughed.

“But it was far from that, and it meant more to me than anything like that.

Eventually, they saw I worked hard for it… and I earned my respect.”

During this time, Ms Gianisis had also held down a government job for several years, and joined training classes at the gym Thump Boxing in Leichhardt. These classes eventually certified her as a boxing instructor, kickstarting a fitness career that she would end up chasing with sheer ambition.

“I left [my government job] and did my Diploma of Fitness in Sydney, and went straight into a full-time job as a trainer with Fernwood – a women’s gym in North Rocks – and that was the [official] start of my fitness career.”

Within those years, Ms Gianisis had also teamed up with another trainer to launch an on-the-side bootcamp company for kids, Fitstop Fitness – a company that still operates today, now as a franchise business – which were bootcamp workshops held for children in Parramatta Park each weekend.

“My business partner and I did it properly. We got the website set-up by a great company, and we worked so hard for it.”

Having extended this two-year business

In due course, Ms Gianisis concluded her employment with Fernwood, where she and her husband, Michael Gianisis, declared the need for a “tree change” in 2012, purchasing a property just outside of Molong.

Running her own bootcamps and supporting gym management for some years after, Ms Gianisis finally seized an opportunity in 2017 to launch her own business (and very first gym) – which she coined Downtown Fitness – the local gym which has been operating in Molong’s main Bank Street ever since.

“I remember vacuuming with music playing – and the song Downtown came on – and it just hit me. I thought ‘that’s it, that’s the name!’”

Ms Gianisis held family meetings to table ideas with branding and colours for the gym space, which even involved an inlaw for the logo’s tagline, “Your Health Is Our Business.”

“It was a whole family process – from colours that my kids and my husband were into – and any other thoughts from the people I loved,” Ms Gianisis explained.

“I wanted the logo to communicate strength for both men and women as well.

I wanted it to be strong, bold, grounding…

and I wanted to go big and take up the whole window space, because I don’t do anything little,” she laughed.

With the hustle and bustle of preparing the space for a fast-approaching opening day, teamed with relentless planning and organising for months on end, Ms Gianisis had entered a complete state of hyperfocussed determination. It wasn’t until a pivotal moment – when her signage went up on display – that reality finally hit the entrepreneur for the first time.

“I was standing on the road when they put the sign up… and it was just a rush of emotions and tears.”

“The poor people in the gym who were busting their guts for ages, the structure and preparation I’d put into planning; I was just a mix of focused, exhausted, inthe-zone… but when I saw those signs all go up, I just completely fell apart. For some reason, it was in that moment that it really hit me where I just broke down, and I thought to myself… ‘Wow, I really did it.’”

Four years down the track – with the overcoming of a COVID battle in between – Ms Gianisis recently celebrated the gym’s fourth birthday milestone, with a crazy-about-four competition for current members. The challenge announced were for members to attend the gym four times

a week, over the space of four weeks, to then go in the draw to win a range of various fitness goodies – with one-on-one PT sessions up for grabs as well – valued at a total $400.

With up to 150 members currently on the books, Ms Gianisis hopes gym-goers will rise to the challenge – which will now be extended due to recent health restrictions – with the added hopes she’ll help members to form a healthy new routine.

“It takes so much energy and thought to keep people interested, so it’s a massive sense of achievement turning four - I thought surely I would’ve bored everyone by now,” Ms Gianisis laughed.

“But I make it as easy as I can for people to come in and enjoy themselves – and none of the classes are like an anatomy class with words that a lot of us can barely pronounce – because people are coming here to have a good time, and to get healthy.”

Though the recently announced COVID measures have reintroduced mask-wearing (with a cap of 20 people per class), business will remain open as usual at Downtown Fitness, opening from 6:00am to 7:00pm from Monday to Thursday, and 6:00am to 3:00pm each Friday (with weekend closure during winter at this time).

For those interested in joining Downtown Fitness, membership starts from $15 per week, which includes a rundown on equipment usage (that supports any workout, cardio, weights-training, and supported machine weights), with additional recommendations for further PT support where individuals require.

“We offer a supported fitness program which is personalised, and we’re always open to having a chat. Our approach is realistic – where we try to offer anyone unrealistic or ‘quick-fix’ approaches – because we are genuinely interested in the improvement of your overall health and wellbeing,” Ms Gianisis said.

“The atmosphere [at Downtown Fitness] is chilled, organised, and it’s fun.”

What does it take to organise a home game of footy?

Ask Jenny Barrow, President of the Molong Bulls Rugby League team who will talk about the fantastic volunteers who willingly hop in each season to help. Volunteers who open the gates, show people where to park, line-mark the ground, place chairs .. open the dressing rooms, and look after the players.

Then there’s the women and men (mainly women) who order the food and drinks for the kiosk ... and stand and butter dozens of loaves of sliced bread for the BBQ (that someone has ordered in and collected).

It’s actually a BIG job to run the kiosk at local footy. Decades of volunteers (parents, friends, grandparents, residents) have been involved.

The Express found these volunteers in the early cold morning last Sunday. See P.15.

Into the Grand Final Jock Haynes The Magpies had an emphatic 4313 win in Geurie in the preliminary final of the Oilsplus competition.

This books them a grand final spot against the undefeated Blayney this coming Saturday.

Geurie have been strong all season only losing very close games to Blayney and Coolah, whilst Molong have been building slowly throughout the season. This should have lead to a very close game, however the Magpies blew Geurie off the park in the first ten minutes and followed through for the remainder of the game.

Three tries in this initial period, to Tyler Ginn, Scott Nicholls and a barnstorming Blake Hutchinson meant the home team were going to struggle to regain the initiative.

Running with a decent breeze at their backs, five eight and captain Zac White made clear the Molong game plan, constantly punching the ball deep towards the sideline. The chasing defence was excellent and Geurie were constricted from using any space in the open field.

Molong dominated the set pieces in the first half, with hooker Charlie Cooper able to tame the wind to keep the ball straight in the lineout – something which his opposition counterpart was unable to do. The scrum also shattered the Geurie pack, giving them nothing to work with from the base.

Molong extended their lead to 26-0 with Hutchinson’s second try at the half hour mark. Geurie finally troubled the scorers close to half time with a try to at least give them some hope going into the break 26-5 down.

The second half saw Molong again play smarter rugby than the Goats. With Geurie having the wind behind them, it was much more of an arm wrestle. Molong shunned its first half kicking game and held onto the ball, however Geurie was unable to change tactics to suit the conditions and tried to run it when they should have been playing for territory. Molong’s overall defence was outstanding forcing plenty of errors from the Geurie team, who were never able to get back into the game as a result.

Geurie kicked an early penalty, but further tries to Stuart Hobbs and Zac White, as well as a penalty kicked by flanker Riley White, who had a good day with the boot, boosted Molong’s score to its final 43 points before Geurie added their second try just before the final bell.

It was an impressive performance from a well balanced and prepared Magpie outfit. There were no poor performers, with Zac White, winger Joe Reid, Charlie Cooper and half Luke Wells having particularly strong games – flanker Riley White was voted Player’s Player. Mistakes were also rare and discipline was strong in the face of what I’m told was significant off the ball provocation - if they can keep their composure against Blayney this Saturday they stand a great chance of bringing home Molong’s first premiership since 2014.

The club would greatly appreciate a host of Magpie supporters for the Grand Final this weekend in Blayney, commencing 2.00pm at King George VI Oval.

The Molong Magpies 1954 - 2006 This fascinating article by yhe late Kevin “Bullett” Dean on the history of the Molong Magpies appeared in the Molong Express on 3 August 2006.

MIDDLE: Kevin Philpott, John Merchant, George Lyons, Bill Gunther (Captain), Kevin Malise, Bob Connolly, Bob Brazier, FRONT: Des Staines, Ray Bloomfield, (Michael Bloomfield) and Kevin Dean As we progress to this weekend’s important Magpies game against Blayney, let’s take the time to turn back the clock to the players of 1954, and before, and remember the formation of Rugby Union and the Magpies in Molong.

In the pre-war years, Molong fielded a team of top class union players. Whilst there are far too many names to write down, they were a great and dedicated local team winning many games at a very high standard. During those years, Molong had several players picked in representative games. The ground used back then was “West End” known as Gus Weeks’ Training Track.

Post World War II, Rugby in Molong got underway in 1954 with a rather controversial meeting held at the Freemason’s Hotel. Whilst there was opposition to the meeting and the formation of Rugby Union at the time, the meeting was indeed a great success with many keen players coming along. Whilst players were short in supply at the time, the numbers soon built up with Bill Gunther taking over as Coach.

The meeting, held in February 1954, saw a very solid committee come together to encourage and support the formation of Rugby Union in Molong. With the support of a few local Rugby League players, Molong had a team, a paddock, and good or bad - they turned out to be a great team. Bill Gunther as Coach put together a great team of unknown qualities but turned out champions. Brian Tranter turned up to work in Molong and, indeed, he was “God’s Gift” to the team. Brian was amongst one of the best ever to set foot on the Molong ground, but all in all, this team of 1954 were a great team. We defeated All Stars Teacher’s College from Bathurst from their position - leading the competition 8-Nil. It was a great day and all players played very well. A proud day for Coach Bill Gunther. May I make mention of this game as it was the first we had won in defeating the All Stars. During the Golden Year of 1954, Molong had quite a few players selected in Country Week teams and gave a great performance for their first year in the Country Week team.

Rugby teams continued to grow year after year and we did see over the years some great players from junior players to some leading first grade teams. In the year 1957 we again won the competition defeating Emus 11 to 8. Follow up Molong again won the first grade competition defeating Yeoval 9 to 8. In 1965 Molong 17 defeated Yeoval 6 - again a great year in Molong Rugby. Molong won over Yeoval - Molong 27 to Yeoval 9. Molong had a great flow of victories in 1968 defeating Dubbo 14 to 8, 1969 again Dubbo were beaten by Molong 12 to 6 and in 1970 we defeated Parkes 13-3. There appears to be a few blanks from then on but alone Molong have had many great years. As we turn back to years gone by the Molong Magpies can be proud of those 52 years of Rugby Union. Win, lose or draw, they have accepted defeat in a very proud manner and a hand shake and a few drinks has always been their motto. Over the years we have met and played with some great footballers and been involved with some great teams.

As we talk of the years gone by, may we shed a tear to the years we have been known to so many wonderful Rugby players. There has been sadness that has crept into the loss of quite a few players. Who will ever forget some players who have set foot on the recreation ground at Molong.

We had over the years many members of the committee who have done a great job and should say a sincere thank you to the ‘whistle blower’ who had to, at times, give some of the boys an ‘early mark’. May we make special mention to Mary Mulhall and her helpers over the years.

They have done a great job. As we look back to this year’s rugby we see Yeoval again leading the competition. Molong are second and will play Blayney in the semi finals this coming weekend.

In closing this brief story of the Molong Magpies Rugby Union, may we pay our respects to Bill Gunther who is in hospital in Orange. Bill’s health is not the best. Thank you also to the team of the Molong Express.

She walked to the station to borrow a gas can and buy some gas. The attendant told her that the only gas can he owned had been loaned out, but she could wait until it was returned. Since Sister Mary Ann was on the way to see a patient, she decided not to wait and walked back to her car.

She looked for something in her car that she could fill with gas and spotted the bedpan she was taking to the patient.

Always resourceful, Sister Mary Ann carried the bedpan to the station, filled it with gasoline, and carried the full bedpan back to her car.

As she was pouring the gas into her tank, two Baptists watched from across the street.

One of them turned to the other and said, 'If it starts, I'm turning Catholic.'!!

Well, for example, the other day, Bev my wife and I went into town and visited a shop.

When we came out, there was a cop writing out a parking ticket.We went up to him and I said, ‘Come on, man, how about giving a senior citizen a break……?’

He ignored us and continued writing the ticket. I called him an “Ar*e Hole” .

He glared at me and started writing another ticket for having worn-out tires.

So Bev called him a “Sh1t Head”.

He finished the second ticket and put it on the windshield with the first.

Then he started writing more tickets.

This went on for about 20 minutes.

The more we abused him, the more

tickets he wrote.

Just then our bus arrived, and we got on it and went home.

We try to have a little fun each day now that we’re retired. It’s important at our age.

Better Days to Come for the Bulls Jack Mann Congratulations to the Magpies with a great win over Guerie to go into the Grand Final.

Magpies played a game that Guerie could not match. Driving through the centre plus the edges giving a strong backline room to cut through their defencde line with sharp running and offloads. A strong kicking game with nice tries coming from Chip & Charlie.

Bulls - Canowindra Tigers

Bulls kicked off with the Tigers completing the 1st finishing with a chip going into dead ball area. Line drop-out. Tigers back on attack - good defence saw Tigers turn the ball over a crunching from Bastick. Bulls made good metres with a good clearing kick that put them deep in their half. Tigers with ball in hand went through some soft defence before Piper went for intercept, close but not close enough second time in two weeks. Maybe next week for Piper.

Tigers once again feeding scrum sent ball wide and going over with the winger turning inside ball and going in unscathed 4-0. Tigers from kickoff, Bulls defending well off their line turn-over to Bulls trying to come out from the line. Tigers in their face and hitting hard. Bulls under pressure produced a pressure kick that went into Tiger’s hands.

Three passes went wide in again for 2nd try converted 10-0 Tiers. Kick off deep into Tigers territory a fiery run and unload broke our defence line - went 60 metres to score again - unconverted 14-0 Tigers. Kick-off again saw Tigers coming off their line straight through none existing defence line. Bulls not coming up together or fast enough - also not putting their efforts into putting heart and soul into their tackles. The problem being ‘we know they’re there young men can do it‘... but consistency needed.

As a result Tigers scored unopposed 20-0.

Bulls kick off saw Tigers hitting up the ball and with a clearing kick saw the Bulls back on the attack. Clearing kick from T. Barrow went dead.

Wilson right back on boil. Gavin - Wilson hitting up with purpose before turning inside ball to Maguire going over next to the posts converted 26-12. It was good to see growing in the Bull’s camp. Kick-Off saw Bulls back on attack looking much more vigorous before yet another turnover from trying to push a low percentage offload.

Tigers fed scrum - stiffer defence from Bulls seeing a turnover to Bull’s.

Gavin hitting it up then ball going wide. Wilson went for chip but went straight into Tiger’s arms. Then Tigers dropped ball saw Bull’s in possession. Piper was hit and stripped of the ball. Tiger attach saw them cross the line but dropping the pill. Somehow Tigers got a scrum feed. Vigorous defence saw Tigers coughing it up.

Oates taking it up strong and looking dangerous every time he had ball in hand. Bastick, Gavin, Gersbach, Gallagher, Wilson running well looking a lot better. T. Barrow kicked with Tigers knocking on. Back on attack with Amberge stepping and splitting a gap before being cut in half and having to leave the field. Replaced with Thomo. Whiting started to get his feet and running hard. A good set from Bulls taking play deep into Tiger’s territory. Whiting taking up more good metres - control looking better again.

Oates and Barrow with strong runs resulting with a penalty to Bulls right back with runs from Fogg and Gallagher followed by a chip kick from Wilson going straight into Tigers arms. Again we have to cut this from Wilson’s game? A sloppy period from both sides - a high kick from Tigers but taken well from Thomas under a lot of pressure - this young man who has talent - then returned the ball into strong Tigers defence. T. Brrow running with vigour (I would like to see more from Barrow instead of him being a link man so much. Get cranky Todd!

Bull’s still have players returning - Madden White Scotty, Packo, Miller, K. Barrow, Mann.

This will strengthen the Bulls with better days to come.

Molong Golf Ladies Last Wednesday we played 9 holes and then enjoyed lunch after at the Chinese restaurant where we celebrated Dave Campbell’s birthday. Thank you to Margaret Philipson who made the chocolate birthday cake.

Next Wednesday 7th we will play an 18 hole Stableford, see you all there.

Sunday Golf Sunday saw a golf pennants tournament begin between Molong, Manildra, Yeoval and Wattle Flat golf clubs.

Blayney and Canowindra were also going to participate but chose to withdraw.

The first round saw the four clubs converge on Manildra with six players representing each club but only the four best scores counting towards the result.

Molong was represented by Scott Oates, Paul Glynn, Al Evans, Roger Wood, Stubba and the Ghost Walker. Yeoval won the first round

and Molong came in second place.

Paul Glynn won a prize for the second best individual score on the day. Thanks to Manildra for hosting the day and to “Bushy” for the bbq lunch and to the club for pizzas at the end of play. The second round is to be played at Wattle Flat in four weeks time.

Royal Molong golf course saw a few players play a nine hole event with Matt Earle bringing his children out for a hit of golf. I’m not sure if a winner was declared.

Royal Molong hosted a round of the Central West veterans golf tournament on Monday. You need to be fifty five and over to play “vets”. There were forty one players with the Molong ladies providing the meals for the players.

Molong’s own Scott Oates won the “A” grade. Who would have thought the youthful looking Scott was that old?

Golf again on Sunday, 8.30am for 9am.

Well it was just too cold for croquet last Saturday, so hopefully this coming Saturday will be much nicer and we will be able to play a couple of rounds, followed by our Christmas in July dinner at the RSL.
