Molong Advancement Group (MAG) is proud to be of assistance to Central West Disc Golf by applying for an Australia Post grant to establish a permanent Disc Course on the grounds at Molong Golf Club. According to MAG Secretary Marj Bollinger For MAG Marj Bollinger said, “Once completed, this project has the potential to ‘Advance’ Molong in so many ways."

The project has the potential to assist the local Golf Club sustain their viability by attracting Disc Golf players and visitors as well as contributing towards the upkeep of their grounds.

"I’m told Disc Golf is the fastest growing sport in Australia. Establishing Molong as one of the first playing areas in NSW means that we will be well placed to capitalise on the advantages that the extra tourism will bring with it once the course is completed. " The social and economic benefits of this low cost project are mind boggling as it is accessible to all ages - and the equipment needed is a simple disc, no big bag of sticks to carry around or special uniforms.

It would be possible for our more senior citizens who once played golf in Molong and now own a mobility scooter to once again go out to the Golf Club to play or simply watch and enjoy some fun.

Students at Molong Central School are already playing the sport at a temporary venue and are eager to move on to more permanent facility.

"It would appear that age has no boundaries for this sport" said Marj. Even if you don’t want to throw a disc Marj suspects it would be an entertaining fun way to get your exercise by walking around and watching those who do play improve their skills whilst enjoying themselves.

You can prove Marj's point by coming along to the Golf Club to watch the first Major Disc Golf event in Molong when Central West Disc Golf host the NSW Open Championships on the October long weekend 5th and 6th prior to Molong Markets on Monday 7th.

As MAG have registered with the McGrath Foundation - both of these events will be encouraging those present to participate and turn up PINK!

POPULATION FORECASTS from Bathurst Regional Council consultants, id.community, earmark Eglinton as the region's fastgrowing suburb between now and 2036.

WORK ON the new $12.8 million Camp Street Bridge is set to start on August 26.

Plans for the new Camp Street Bridge in Forbes are powering ahead, with construction of the $12.8 million project to commence ahead of schedule.

Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Paul Toole visited Forbes to announce the construction schedule on Friday, and said it was ready to go ahead of schedule.

“The Camp Street Bridge built in 1927 - has served the community and visitors to the area for nearly 100 years, but it is time for an upgrade,” Mr Toole said.

“Following a competitive tender process, Abergeldie Contractors Ptd Ltd was selected to build the bridge and is expected to start work by the end of August,” the Minister said.

Future drought fund becomes reality Farmers in the Calare electorate stand to benefit from projects funded by the Coalition’s Future Drought Fund, which passed the Senate on last week.

Federal Member for Calare and Assistant Minister to the Deputy Prime Minister, Andrew Gee said the Future Drought Fund will deliver $100 million in investment into drought preparedness and resilience projects every year, starting July 2020.

“Farmers and businesses in the Central West know how hard this drought has been. I myself have visited a number of farmers and seen how difficult this drought is. We promised to do this to support our farmers for future droughts, as well as this one, and we’ve delivered,” Mr Gee said.

“The funds could be used for climate adaptation, extension work, or region-wide projects such as pest and weed control.

“The $5 billion Future Drought Fund means $100 million every year will be invested in drought resilience and preparedness. This is on top of the $1.9 billion we’ve already invested in Farm Household Allowance, Rural Financial Counselling, mental health funding, low interest loans and more.”

Mr Gee said a consultative committee would soon be formed to decide how the $100 million was invested, as per the legislation.

“Australian drought policy now has a centrepiece and a guaranteed investment of $100 million a year that no Minister can take away,” Mr Gee added.

The NSW Government, through ‘The Creative Kids Program’ is providing one voucher per year for kids aged between 4.5 years to 18 years old. Parents can access the rebate online or in person at Service NSW (external link). The vouchers will help parents meet the cost of creative and cultural activities such as music lessons, languages, coding, drama and theatre, photography and graphic design.

Arts OutWest is encouraging parents of school aged kids across the region to make use of their Creative Kids vouchers.

“Vouchers can be used towards registration, participation and tuition costs for performing arts, visual arts, coding, languages, literature, music and other creative and cultural activities within an approved list of activity providers” said Tracey Callinan of Arts OutWest.

Across the NSW Central West 70 creative arts providers have now registered to accept the vouchers.

“The program allows kids to try new creative activities or continue participation in activities they love. It’s also supporting local artists and arts business in a field where it can often be tough to make a full-time living.”

“We encourage parents to jump onto the Creative Kids website, claim their vouchers and find a local arts activity.”

Musician Simone Gough of Harmonie Group Facilitation is one of the signed up Creative Kids providers in the Central West. Simone runs weekly ukulele classes for both adults and children including in Cowra, Woodstock and Grenfell as well as hand drumming classes. Simone is also a registered NDIS provider. $100 gets kids ten of her weekly lessons. She’s seen a significant boost to participation through the scheme saying the vouchers have “given more kids in the community opportunities to have a go and helped out parents who wouldn’t have been able to afford arts activities.”

The scheme is still open for new providers to register. “It’s helped me to sustain myself as a full time community musician,” Simone Gough said.

Parents apply for the vouchers using their MyServiceNSW account and need to provide their child’s Medicare card details. The vouchers can be used any time during the calendar year.

Age of Fishes Museum scales new heights – $600,000 facility funded by State Government and Shire THANKS TO an allocation of funds by the State Government and Cabonne Council, Canowindra's world-famous fossils, buried for 360 million years, are being moved to a new home, beginning Monday last. The operation is expected to take a week.

The bulk of Canowindra’s unique fish fossils, preserved in their slabs of rock, are being relocated from their temporary storage area to a new, purpose-built $600,000 storage and research facility in the town.

Located adjacent to the Age of Fishes Museum, thge new centre was built with the assistance of a $300,000 NSW Government grant and $300,000 from Cabonne Council.

The best of the fish fossil slabs have been on display at the museum for a number of years, but the rest have been stored in less than ideal conditions beneath the grandstand at Canowindra Showground.

The famous and scientifically important fossils were discovered by chance at Canowindra in 1955, when a council road worker turned over a large rock slab with strange impressions on it.

He pushed the slab aside, where it was later spotted by a local beekeeper who recognised its importance and notified the Australian Museum in Sydney. Expert examination of the slab later confirmed it to be one of the most remarkable discoveries of its kind anywhere in the world.

In 1993, an exploratory dig led by

Australian Museum palaeontologist, Dr Alex Ritchie, resulted in the recovery of 70–80 tonnes of rock slabs containing some 4,000 fish specimens.

With some of the slabs weighing up to two tonnes, this week’s relocation to their new home will be a logistical challenge, as well as marking a milestone in the history of the Age of Fishes Museum.

As part of the move, the fossils, which were recently donated to the Australian Museum by Cabonne Council, will be digitally scanned by scientists from Macquarie University. This will enable high resolution 3D rendering and 3D printing of the fossils, as well as digitisation and registration to meet the latest international scientific standards.

Speaking on the occasion of David Attenborough's visit in 2013, Dr Ritchie lamented the fact that 90 per cent of the fossils found in the locality were unable to be displayed in the Museum but had to be stored in "fairly dreadful conditions" under the grandstand in the Canowindra World-renowned naturalist, Sir showground.

So why the fuss about the Canowindra fossils?

DURING THE DEVONIAN ERA there great rivers ran in what we now call the Central West of New South Wales.

Those rivers teemed with armorplated fish, fish with lungs instead of gills, and fierce predatory fish with powerful jaws and sharp teeth.

These are the creatures whose remains we now see as the Canowindra fossils, formed when thousands crammed together, perishing as the waterhole in which they were trapped dried out.

The Canowindra fish fossils are important for two main reasons, one being their condition. They are very abundan, in their thousands, extremely well articulated – that is to say the bodies were largely undisturbed and so are intact and retain their shape – and very well preserved.

Two species of armoured fishes have been found and these are by far the most prolific of the fossils found at the Canowindra site.

Fifty specimens of an athrodiran placoderm, Groenlandaspi,s have been found and four genera of sarcopterygians (lobe-finned Work has begun on relocating the Canowindra fishes), and all are known only fossils from the showground grandstand to from this site. Among the mass of fossils in that first slab found by the road worker back in 1955, is a single fossil of the species now known as Canowindra grossi, a lobe-finned, air-breathing fish.

Instead of the fins which we see on modern fishes, Canowindra grossi had lobes that look like rather like miniature limbs comprising arrangements of bones that look somewhat similar to the bones in human legs.

There are long bones (similar to our femur, tibia and fibula) followed by some small bones similar to those in our ankle, followed again by several small bones similar to our phalanges or toes.

For this reason, scientists regard Canowindra grossi's lobes as rudimentary limbs.

This remarkable and fascinating fish also breathed air from above the surface into its lungs, rather than taking in oxygen from water via gills as most modern fish do.

These two special features of Canowindra grossi – its rudimentary limbs and its ability to breathe air – suggest that it is an intermediary species in the long procession of creatures as they evolved from earlier animals such as fish to the amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals, humans and the great apes among them.

The fossil fishes of Cabonne Country are or world importance and let's hope the Age of Fishes museum continues to flourish.

The last Blacksmith in the Village

As a kid, I used to holiday every summer at a small coastal town named Blacksmiths. While swimming and fishing and malted milk and rollerblading all give Blacksmiths a special place in my heart, the rest of the world know blacksmiths as ancient steel-crafters. I recently met the man my beach paradise was named after: a real life forger of metal things.

Dave Walker is a Cowra resident who learned to heat and hammer metal in his younger days as a segue from electrical work with copper pipes. His career has taken him across much of the state thanks in part to his work building and restoring horse-drawn carriages. Can you get any more traditional?

Dave can turn a railway bolt into a “camper’s friend” and an old bucket into a knife strong enough to slice a Queensland blue pumpkin. His workshop is adorned with the treasures of his craft and tools he has invented along the way. Two round balls atop a steel block? The perfect shape to create a leaf in motion. There are fine black roses and bulls with expression on wine holders built for a romantic eve. Horseshoes seem obligatory and while they add to the historic aura,

Dave is clear that he did not train as a farrier, these were for his horses only.

The young students who want to learn from Dave give him hope that art of handmade will not be forgotten.

In a shed full of beaten metal and weathered tools, a small anvil painted hot pink stands alone. Dave’s youngest apprentice is his three year old granddaughter who uses a step and small hammer to bend cold copper tubing while Grandad works. She’ll be a pro by five.

While I pat myself on the back for building a campervan from scratch with zero trade skills, Dave holds back on the praise, “that’s not how I would do it, I’d take a couple of horses and a wagon.” This guy is the real deal, and though young at seventy, considers himself born in the wrong era. I’m not so sure. True the 19th century would have been great for business, but when you think a blacksmith is a town by sea, I think we need him more than ever.

I first met Dave at the Molong markets and you can too as he frequents all of the local market days.

Last Saturday night Kim and Dave, Chef Grant and their team at the popular Molong Freemasons (bottom pub) served up one of the best nights featuring a range of Thai food dishes.

With Chef Grant sending out a number of food platters, Kim and Elli serving up rice and Thai salad - Dave and Amy suggesting the right wines - the evening was packed out ... and we diners - also packed out! Delicious, filling ... we could hardly stop tasting the food (and the wine).

Kim and Dave promise “there will be more” degustation and theme dinners coming Molong’s way soon. We can hardly wait. Well done to Kim and Elli who were on their feet all night helping Grant and serving the delicious foods to what was a ‘full crowd’ (pardon the pun!).

It’s great to have chef Grant Smith back in town. He was the popular chef at Jayes Cafe, then went selling phones and computers for awhile to have a break from kitchens. “I’m really glad to be back creating and serving good food again, and in Molong,” said Grant. “We are also very pleased you are back, Grant.”

NAIDOC Week Celebrated at the MCS

The Wiradjuri people - past, present and future of Molong and district can be proud of the respect, commitment and belief of Molong Central School Principal, Michelle Barrett and her team who are positively supporting the cultural, language and educations needs of 35 students of the school who represent indigenous families.

Working through the Aboriginal Education Consultative Group - led by President,

Carmen O’Neil and Molong based cultural consultants, Fleur and Lachie (Milan Dhiiyaan) - the students are learning traditional dance, songs, stories, art and language.

With their culture positively supported and recognised by fellow students - the young dancers confidently performed with pride for the school’s NAIDOC Week event.

“Carpet of flowers” given meaning

A fifth generation

Every two years, the Grand-Place in the Belgian city of Brussels is covered with a carpet of begonia flowers.

Measuring 77 x 24 metres, the stunning carpet is constructed by about 120 volunteers using the blossoms of nearly 1 million begonias. The stunning display is completed in some four hours.

The featured theme in 2018 was “Mexico”.

If you’d like to see the display in real time – and who wouldn’t, the 2020 festival will be held in Brussels from 13th–16th August.

A brief example. When I was growing up (there, I got it in!), kids in rural areas were carted along to all the dances and other functions at The Hall (Ladies, a plate please, gentlemen a tie), often only a galvanized-iron shed next to an antbed tennis court somewhere east of the black stump. When they could no longer stay awake, the kids collapsed on old cushions and blankets stuffed under the wall-benches. At supper time if the hall was big enough, the kids would have a separate buffet, if not they waited till the adults had got their fill of tea, sandwiches and cake and then were allowed in to clean up the rest.

It was beneficial to both parties.

Raspberry vinegar and grubby hands were kept away from best dresses and suits and the adults didn’t have to shout to make themselves heard above the feeding frenzy as ravenous kids devoured the queen pudding, cream sponge and fairy bread.

For our part we weren’t bombarded with “wipe your mouth, use a serviette, chew your food before you swallow it, don’t rub mock cream in Jennifer’s hair”. It was far more sensible and civilised. Such supperhall etiquette had all but disappeared by the late 70s. In its turn, the nodiscipline theory was replaced by the doctrine of ‘We should be friends with our children who are, after all, adults in miniature and must have their independence’. The experts were tightening their grip.

When I was a nipper, as I think I’ve said before, kids and grown-ups lived on the same planet, but that’s about all you could say of them. Friends be buggered. Both generations lived under a sort of permanent flag of truce, as long as the rules were observed by both sides.

Oh you loved you parents and siblings all right, along with your extended family, but that was in that other, private hemisphere reserved for badly cut legs and big disappointments and broken carts that needed fixing and wanting to know how fast crocodiles could run; reserved for when the dog died, or a relative was in a coffin in the best room of their house and you were afraid that the ghost might come and tap you on the shoulder or, worse still, you just might be called on to be the sin-eater (thank my childhood investigation into the folklore of my Welsh great-grandfather for that one).

But on the surface at least it was a fragile peace, easily broken by the injustices of adults or rule infringements by kids. Outside school hours, you were expected to stay out of the house and the adults’ hair. Once you’d done your chores they didn’t want to see you until it was time to sit down to a meal.

I’ve heard it said that even young kids are entitled to the privacy of their own room. Yeah? In the 40s and 50s kids didn’t have private lives, even if you didn’t have to share a room with a sibling. You were left pretty much to your own devices but all the time knowing you were under the scrutiny of Big Brother in the person of any adult within earshot.

A grown-up didn’t have to know you to chastise you, that was part of the rules. They could threaten the boot in the backside, even to skin you alive or, worst of all, to “…tell your mother, Sonny Jim and don’t think I don’t know her”. Such threats had to be warranted, the rules allowed for juvenile retribution if they weren’t.

It was a given that kids on public transport gave their seat up to an adult – even little kids. It was also a given that the beneficiary would offer to sit you on their lap, Mum or aunty’s lap being occupied with babies or parcels, for the duration of the journey.

Again, it wasn’t all it’s often cracked up to be. Teachers were allowed to cane you – I still maintain that too many ‘six of the bests’ contributed to finger-joint problems that are today beginning to affect my guitar playing – and for the most part the law turned a blind eye to domestic violence and maltreated kids.

But as a kid you accepted your lot.

Okay, so you’d broken some stupid school rule and you were up for the cane. So you copped it sweet. That was the rules. You were a kid and you knew your place and you could always hope to get bitten by a norn* and die and then that’d learn ‘em.

Even as a teenager in full-time paid work, as long as you lived at home you paid ‘board’ to your mother and continued to do chores, the younger kids taking over the ones befitting their place in the pecking order. By then you might also have begun to realise that a Grampa had nightmares because he spent the last of his teenage years in the mindscarring muck of the Western Front and that your mate’s Dad was only 21 when he copped it in the Middle East, leaving him fatherless and his mum a widow, so you’d grudgingly admit they had some sort of right to control you.

But by then the pursuit of dreams had taken over from simpler pleasures, families were strewn across the country and generational gaps appeared into which fell or were thrown the accumulated folkwisdom and child-raising skills of numberless generations.

Parents were now firmly in the grip of the Experts who maintained that children are really adults but without an adult’s responsibilities.

We believed them, and both kids and adults were to suffer the consequences.

along with only odd pens of heavy weights. The lambs are starting to show the effects of the cooler weather, with a larger percentage of plainer types. Not all the regular buyers were present, with the absence of a major supermarket operator.

Light weight lambs to the processors were $8 cheaper. Trade lambs were $6 to $10 cheaper. Heavy weight lambs were $15/ head cheaper, with quality a factor. A few trade weight Merino lambs made from $130 to $187 and crossbred lambs to the restockers sold from $170 and $188/ head. Hoggets reached $200/head.

It was a mixed yarding of mutton where most grades were $10/head cheaper. 2 score ewes sold from $79 to $115, while the better 3 and 4 scores made from $100 to $209 for crossbreds and $180/head for Merinos. Merino wethers sold to $188/ head. Carcase prices for the better sheep varied from 550c to 630c/kg cwt.

CTLX cattle market report 30/7/19

AGENTS YARDED 2010 It was a good quality yarding with a good selection of young cattle to suit the trade buyers and the feeders. There were also some good pens of well finished grown steers and heifers, which sold to strong competition. Once again cows were well supplied. A full field of buyers competed strongly with most sections recording gains.

Young cattle to the trade were up to 20c dearer, the feeder steers were firm to 4c dearer, the lighter Feeder heifers sold from 5c to 8c/kg cheaper.

Young cattle to the restockers were dearer, with the young steers selling from 180c to 319c, while the young restocker heifers sold from 140c to 256c/kg.

The Rhinettes however had a great 20 nil win over the Trundle ladies.

Second chance on Saturday Molong will host the preliminary final next weekend after going down 20-17 in Wellington on Saturday.

It was a hard fought game in which the Magpies had their chances, with the Redbacks just edging them as the better team on the day.

Molong started well, and were first on the board when halfback Mitch Brown kicked a penalty at the 10th minute.

The home team hit back almost immediately when Molong were unable to clear from the kickoff, despite winning a lineout on Wellington’s throw and also a scrum against the feed. Wellington eventually scored following another five metre scrum and some strong hitups left the defence short out wide. They converted to open a four point lead.

The Redbacks went two tries up after a Molong clearing kick made it into the safe hands of an opposition winger, who weaved his way through the disjointed defenders to eventually score a spectacular 60m try.

Molong had the better of the rest of the half and opted three times for taps and kicks for line rather than a penalty. The Wellington defence was always well set however so they were unable to add any more points and went into the break with a 14-3 deficit.

The Redbacks extended the lead seven minutes into the second half with a penalty goal. Molong finally got back into the game with a converted try ten minutes later.

They had received a penalty midfield

and kicked for the lineout close to the tryline. They lost the set piece on their own throw but second rower Angus Sharpe scored after the clearing kick was charged down. Mitch Brown added the extras to close the gap to seven.

Unfortunately Molong knocked on from the kick off and then gave away a penalty, which Wellington duly kicked.

The Magpies kicked into gear and a change of tactic from the ruck paid dividends. They had struggled to make any serious inroads hitting the ball up one out from the ruck, but some quick pick and drives had Wellington peddling backwards and Knox Bunting was able to outstretch his arm and score Molong’s second try.

Brown converted again to get Molong to within three points.

That was where the score was to remain as Molong made some mistakes at crucial points which lost them momentum each time. The scrum was generally excellent, as was the lineout, though they lost some of their own throw at crucial moments.

The Wellington defence, particularly in the first half was very strong, but if Molong can get the ball moving quickly from the ruck as they did in the second half, they will have more than a good chance to get a second crack against the Redbacks.

The Magpies will take on Geurie, who defeated Coolah 35-17 on what will be a big weekend at the Rec this Saturday with the Cabonne Roos scheduled to be at the ground earlier.

Molong Hockey Day! Saturday August 3 The day will begin with under 9’s starting at 9am then from 10:30 the men’s 2nd grade and women’s 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades will all play.

There will be food and drinks available throughout the day and then we will move to the Molong Bowling Club for a sausage sizzle and game presentations.

All MHC players are expected to attend and we would love to see community members come along to support the club.
